“For this reason, adolescents often seem to act impulsively, rather than thoughtfully. The prefrontal cortex is, in general, slower than the development of the emotional parts of the brain. Furthermore, the hormonal changes that are associated with puberty, which primarily influence emotional responses, may also create strong emotions and lead to impulsive behavior.

“Self-esteem begins to improve as youth begin to understand the difference between performance outcomes resulting from inherent, natural talent and ability; versus, performance outcomes resulting from hard work and perseverance.

Jaehee Personality is the type of person you are, shown by the way you behave, feel, and think. t is mainly divided into 5 parts that are openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism which is called the Big Five Models or the Five-Factor Model. Everybody has these personalities but each person has a different amount of it. People who have a lot of openness tend to be creative, more curious, think out of the box, and try to do new things, but they also tend to lose their focus easily and are gulliblePeople who have a lot of conscientiousness are likely to be more mindful and have better memory, but they usually have high expectations, if you have too much you could fall into depression, may not see the big picture, and put undue stress on others.People with more extroversion like meeting new people, don’t mind being the center of attention, start conversations, have a lot of energy, and are active. On the other hand, they may struggle with keeping their emotions in check, they can come across as aggressive, can be too intense or lively, may appear to be too confident or cocky, and they may attempt to do more than can be realistically completed in a set time. People with a lot of agreeableness are more likely to generally be considerate, kind, trusting they value getting along with others, and have an optimistic view of human nature. However, they might be too trusting. Lastly, the people who have a lot of neuroticism tend to feel stressed, angry, or anxious more than other people, they can have better continence for danger, they are interlinked with a low-stress tolerance, and more likely to interpret in a wrong way.

Personality is the type of person you are, shown by the way you behave, feel, and think. t is mainly divided into 5 parts that are openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism which is called the Big Five Models or the FiveFactor Model. Everybody has these personalities but each person has a different amount of it.

For me, as you can see from the graph above have a lot of openness, conscientiousness, and agreeableness and have less neuroticism and extroversion. From this data, can see that like to try new techniques in drawings or sports, have a good memory of when was young, like to be creative for example, like to make or draw different things, value getting along with my friends and can get distracted easily like when am taking a test sometimes get distracted by the squirrels outside by the window. don’t like to be in the center of attention and don’t like discussing with many people like in a student-led conversation in class because am more introverted than extroverted. t also tells me that don’t get stressed, anxious, or angry a lot and am happy most of the time. The Big 5 Traits help us understand others and ourselves because it can show us who we are, for example, what personality traits you have more or less in you. This is important because from your personality you can see how you act like, know and understand who you are better, and because it is a part of who you are (part of your identity).

Jaehee

Adolescence is the period following the onset of puberty during which a young person develops from a child into an adult. During adolescence, the brain prunes unused connections so the brain becomes more efficient and during this time their synapses make faster connections, so you can learn at higher rates. Pruning means to drop or lose, in order to strengthen others. The pruning process begins at the back of the brain and finishes at the front part of the brain and the prefrontal cortex(decision-making part of the brain). During adolescence, friendships are an important part of the adolescent experience, because it allows young adults to try out different identities. However, the more important it is for a teen to belong, the more likely he or she is to be influenced by their peers. They try to change themselves just to fit into a group or become friends. t is good if you change yourself from mean and aggressive to kind and generous but sometimes, it is the other way around. For example, if you look in the adolescence i-book it states that “Part of this may involve engaging in risky behaviors they think are expected of them, including risky behaviors like smoking, drinking, or sexual activity.”Excerpt From: “Book Title.” Apple Books also if you look at teenagers these days people change their personality, how they act, and look just to fit in with people even if they don’t like what they are doing.

When the prefrontal cortex is developing teenagers sometimes rely on emotions, impulses, aggression, and instinctive behavior that are all related to the amygdala when making important decisions. Because teenagers sometimes rely on the amygdala adolescents often seem to show behavior in which you do things suddenly without planning anything or consider the consequences(impulsively). Teenagers could tend to act before they think and end up with bad consequences. Like, drugs, suicide, alcohol, and bullying, etc.Adolescence is important in identity formation because during this period you can create, change, and explore themselves. One advice think would give to the teenager’s parents as they experience adolescence is that they should give special support and value the teenagers as who they are.

(FutureLearn)

Also during this period their self-esteem also starts to vary, children may see themselves as very capable in some areas but not in others. Self-esteem begins to improve as you begin to understand the difference between performance outcomes resulting from inherent, natural talent and ability; versus, performance outcomes resulting from hard work and perseverance. For example, if you look at page 3 in the i-book it says that Carol Dweck, a researcher at Stanford University describes the differences of the two mindsets that are a fixed mindset and a growth mindset as “ n a fixed mindset students believe their basic abilities, their intelligence, their talents, are just fixed traits. They have a certain amount and that's that, and then their goal becomes to look smart all the time and never look dumb. n a growth mindset, students understand that their talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching, and persistence. They don't necessarily think everyone's the same or anyone can be Einstein, but they believe everyone can get smarter if they work at it.”Excerpt From: “Book Title.” Apple Books.

Adolescence B Lilah In childhood, one identifies with parents to whom one is attached. Children want to be similar to the primar people the love. With adolescence and the age of detachment from parents, there is more identif ing with peers and e perimenting with changing identities to discover what fits the older person one is becoming. ADOLESCENSE

OCTOBER 2020

The reason adolescence ears matters is because e er adult has to face this part of life. It shapes ho ou are in the future. I relate to this because the adolescence ears start at around m age. Usuall hat happens in the adolescence ears is our brain is pruned, hich means that our brain gets remodeled so that ou drop or lose unused thinking. The pruning process happens to get rid of useless information in order to learn other information faster. The prefrontal corte is the decision making part of our brain. Adolescents might make more impulsi e decisions because hile the prefrontal corte is de eloping, our decisions usuall rel on the am gdala hich is associated ith emotions, aggression, impulses and instincti e beha ior. This could relate ith risk taking, thinking more negati el and getting in dangerous situations. For e ample doing a dangerous trick. Sometimes adolescents learn little things because the don t ant to look dumb and the ant to look smart all the time, because the ant to be accepted and act like the meet the norms. This means that the adolescent ears ha e both negati e and positi e consequences. Being accepted b others can generate more positi e emotion in teen s brain compared to an adult's brain. This means that if ou aren t accepted or can t relate to the people around ou, ou might ha e more negati e thoughts and think that being different is not a good thing. This relates to me because the people around me and I are going through this right no hich sometimes I make impulsi e decisions and sometimes I get emotional. An e ample of impulsi e decisions could be to agree on doing something quickl ithout thinking or thinking clearl before, something specific is not going to school. Adolescence shapes our identit because it happens in a confusing part of our life here ou ould think and e perience a lot of ne things. This can make ou learn a lot, an e ample is that ou dri e a car and crash. You ould learn ho to minimi e the chances of a car crash and learn to not dri e in certain situations. I think a tip I could gi e to parents or teenagers is that parents, ou should gi e teenagers some time alone and enough pri ac . Teenagers should ha e time alone and enough pri ac , if the need time alone don t force them to go do something else.

DI ING IN MI NDE

STEREOT PES AND HO

THE CAN BE HARMF L

ANDING

Gender, sex and sexuality are all very different things, over the years these concepts have been very misunderstood and stereotyped, some which can be very harmful or just in general irritating. Gender is not only just ‘male and female’ but it's the gender identity and how you, YOURSELF, identify your gender. Which to some, they identify with the pronouns she/her, he/him while others who identify as non-binary would identify with the pronouns they/them. As well as some people who may still feel questioning or just be comfortable with identifying with either pronouns, like she/they or he/they. That is gender, it has nothing to do with your body or organs. Sex, is the sexual organs or sex that you were born with, so, male and female. But what is most commonly misunderstood is that there are only two sex’s, male and female, but there are those who are intersex. There is actually a lot more of the population that is intersex than you’d think. ntersex is pretty much where you may not have completely developed into a ‘male’ or ‘female’ in the whom, but you are still completely valid and completely normal. A lot of young kids would get to choose their pronouns, or stick with they/them. So sex is what you are born with, but does not have to determine your gender expression. Sexuality, is the sexual attraction or preference you have, so those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, asexual etc, there are multiple different sexualities on the spectrum. The LGBTQ A+ spectrum is a very broad and open spectrum, there are a lot of different sexualities people fit into. think some misunderstandings people tend to have is the difference between bisexuals and pansexuals, a lot of people tend to have the misconception that bisexuality is the attraction to ONLY 2 genders, which for some people that may be the case for them, but to others, bisexuality is the attraction to two OR MORE genders, while pansexuality is the attraction to anyone regardless of gender & identity. Another mix-up people may get is between asexuals and aromantics, asexuals, who are misunderstood a lot, is not that they DON'T want any relationship, it's that they have no interest in having any sexual relationship with their partners, whereas those who are aromantic may not want either. Something 've found interesting is that in Swedish, my native language is, there is actually a specific pronoun that does not gender anyone, it's not necessarily ‘they/them’ but is a similar type, and it's very widely known there. The pronouns are gender-neutral and think more people have begun using it before assuming one's pronouns. The Swedish she/her pronouns would be ‘hon/hennes.’ He/him being honom/hans’ but then for the gender-neutral pronouns would be ‘hen.’

(all images from google) This generation has fortunately already begun its journey to fighting against all sorts of stereotypes, by educating and correcting those who are stuck in these beliefs. t's important that when you see people being discriminated against, or in general just being treated differently or talked about in foul ways just because of a stereotype, to stand up for them and enforce the fact that these stereotypes do NOT fit everyone that looks or acts a certain way, and it does not determine how a person is or identifies. Representation is something so important to kids and teens these days, growing up never having someone in the media to represent you can lead to feeling ‘different’ and as if you’re the only one. This is dangerous for kids to feel alone, because they're not. For so many years, the movies and shows kids have been raised with have just been backing up all these dangerous stereotypes, and being raised with that mindset won't help fight against them. Think about all sorts of Disney movies that kids have been raised with, how often have the princesses been submissive, weak women who need a man to save them? How often have you seen princesses that are of another race? How often have you seen the women be independent and not need any male to be successful? How often have you seen those in the LGBTQ A+ community represented? Or those of other cultures? Not very often, huh? From such young ages, it's been taught to children that all relationships are heterosexual relationships where the woman is submissive and weak, and the man is strong and ‘their saviour.’ This is something that has been taught to kids at such young ages, and many people have said that diversity should be ‘taught’ when they're older so they can ‘handle’ it. Which think is absolutely wrong and stupid, this isnt anything ‘sensitive,’ it's just representation and letting children grow up with their own views, and grow to be themselves, without feeling the need to fit the cisgender, heterosexual ‘male or female’ stereotypes. There is this one show on Netflix called ‘ Am Not Okay With This’ that think has very good representation. t not only has actual teenage actors, helping kids self-esteem seeing kids like them rather than older-model type actors. The show is very good for showing what teens in this day and age actually go through, as well as some supernatural events, but most importantly it has great representation for what teens go through and how they deal with it. The show also has very good LGBTQ+ and POC representation. n so many shows, those of colour or those in the LGBTQ+ community have rarely had good character storylines and importance, mostly just been extra added characters for ‘Diversity.’ As for this show, the main characters are LGBTQ+ or POC, and they have great development and characteristics, not only just for extra use. The show had a very well done plan of going about how to represent teens struggling with sexuality or anxiety etc, thought it was so nice to have this show and teens can relate to, rather than seeing some hyper-sexualized teen show about only murders or crazy ‘games.’ Representation makes you feel included, something to hold onto if you ever feel alone, knowing there's some character or person out there that everyone knows and loves gives you that feeling of acceptance and inclusion, gives you hope, and reminds you that you are not alone.

Adolescence

"E e he a he e cha ge fe a d d ffe e ce ge gh, a , ' e a e."

Adolescence is a time period in our life hen a lot of changes are bound to happen, these are the ears that our mind and actions begin to catch up ith our bod , it's the ears leading up to our adult life. Throughout these ears, one of the major changes going on is the pruning of our prefrontal corte , the pruning is the changes that are happening, such as gro ing in some areas, as ell as cleaning a a information ou on t need in our future. Things that ma ha e helped hen ounger, but as ou re gro ing older, this information could be useless as our life is so different no . Ha ing a gro th mindset rather than a closed mindset could benefit our gro th as ell, ith a gro th mindset ou're probabl a more open, creati e person, hich could help too. A common effect of going through adolescence is the making of impulsi e decisions, it's kno n that as the am gdala is going through changes, ou're more likel to decide on emotion rather than logic, hich could lead to some trickier situations. Teens are also kno n to be taking bigger risks ithin this stage of life, that a also possibl leading to trick situations as ell, but he , sometimes taking risks is e actl hat ou need, to e perience ne things, find ne talents or interests, and finding things that make ou happ . This connects to identit as ou gro and e perience all these things, adolescence is ob iousl going to affect people in er different a s but it's just ho ou gro into our adult life.

OCTOBER 2020 The stage of adolescence is a er important time in life as it's the time that our brain and bod gro and de elop to suit and adapt to adulthood. Kno ing about adolescence and the pruning and changes help me kno more about m self and the changes going on in me, and to those I m surrounded b . It gi es me a realit check if things get difficult to remember that these changes are something e er one e periences/has e perienced and that I'm not going through it all alone. As learning more about the brain and changes throughout, I e reali ed more about m self and ho I ould consider m self, hich I think possibl a gro th mindset could fit me. I like to e plore, tr ne things and e perience the orld. I ould sa I m a er open-minded and accepting person, I don't see the point in an sort of discrimination or prejudice against another for an specific differences. I like to ha e different hobbies and interests that co er different areas, like artistic, more acti e and more educational. Whene er it comes to school ork or tests, just o erall ho i'm doing in school, I like to make sure to e pand m kno ledge and gro hen there are areas of impro ement. I don t gi e up and I keep tr ing to practice or understand that task to tr to e cel, or e en just be proud ith m impro ement and understanding. I like to take this time to al a s keep m self educated and kno more about the orld and things going on. I like to be a are of the orld and be open-minded, therefor I could see m self to fit more in the gro th minded area.

Sometimes when things get tough and your body is making all these changes, it's helpful for teens to just be able to have a reality check or something that’ll calm any stress or worries, which, thankfully, true friends are something proven to be very healthy for a teen as going through these changes, having someone they know are there for them to support or care for them. Someone who understands and can relate with you. As well as having some sort of hobby you may use as your reality check or something such as a stress reliever. Having these outlets are very important as you’re going through adolescence. Just having support and an outlet is something that in my personal life has helped me through so much, and is something would suggest everyone experience and use. ADOLE CEN IDEN I During Adolescence, grey matter in the brain is pruned away, leaving space for new synapses, or roads in the brain that make mastering a skill possible. While the prefrontal cortex is still developing, the amygdala, which handles emotions and impulses, is often used for critical decision-making, leading teens to behave impulsively. People are more likely to make decisions that they regret during adolescence. During this time, friendships are essential because a strong social network can be helpful in times when you need a friend. This is also a very important time for relationships because social acceptance during adolescence triggers a stronger response than in adulthood. Teen’s motivation for acceptance and belongings can often lead them to being more heavily influenced by peer pressure than adults.

Self-esteem improves when you understand the difference between doing good because you already could, and doing good because you worked your hardest at not doing badly. An example of this is when you are good at a sport, but when you work at it and practice it and you get better, your self-esteem is better than when you were just good at it with no effort. In a fixed mindset though, people believe that talents are set and fixed; rather than in a growth mindset, where we believe that talent and abilities can be worked at and improved, and adolescence is the best time for the brain to work and improve because adolescents learn at much higher rates than adults.

For example, learning a language when you are a little kid or adolescent is a lot easier than learning a language as an adult. Teen’s incredible “Learning Superpower” allows them to think abstractly, adapt, envision the future, acquire skills, and think creatively. Teens also are big risk-takers, and teen’s fearlessness can worry adults, but this is "exactly what makes adolescents thrive in the space of creativity and enacting social change." says Adriana Galván, of the University of California. Teens are often at the front of social movements, Protests, and Activism, ‘injecting new energy into public life’. An example of this is when Gen Z booked out an entire stadium for a Trump speech, so when he came, no one was there.

To improve your self-esteem, put effort into everything you do, but don’t judge yourself if you think it’s not good enough. Have a strong social network, but be cautious of people who might be taking advantage of you. Don’t blame yourself for poor decisions, because your brain hasn’t developed that way yet. Instead, try to fix the problem, and it’s OK to ask friends, parents, and other people in your social network for help. Fight for what you believe is right, don’t let other people run your life, and remember, “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.’ - James Baldwin

The five key personality traits are Openness, Conscientiousness, Extroversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism, or OCEAN. Everyone has a mix of all five traits, but everyone is different in how they express them. For example, a conscientious person has less extroversion than an extrovert, but it’s still there.

Open people generally appreciate expression, art, experience, imagination, and curiosity. They are usually creative and are open-minded and aware of their feelings. On the other hand, high levels of openness can be perceived as risky and unpredictable. I scored 42 openness, which helps me keep an open mind, and try to understand people before forming an opinion on them, and acknowledging when people have changed. Conscientious people are generally disciplined, dutiful, and have high goals for themselves. They generally like to be prepared, pay attention to details, and achieve a lot. On the other hand, high levels of conscientiousness can be perceived as stubbornness or excessive focus. I scored a 31 in conscientiousness, but I’d like to have more. I find it difficult to get to work, and hard to focus. Extroverted people enjoy socializing with friends and interacting with the people around them. They tend to be enthusiastic and have a lot of energy. On the other hand, because extroverts like to be around people, staying away from people can be very difficult. I scored 58 extroversion, and this helps me make friends, and socialize. It also helps me know when someone is sad, or happy, and how to act accordingly.

Agreeable people are considerate, kind, and generous. They value getting along with others and are generally very selfless, trusting, and helpful people. On the other hand, Agreeable individuals can often be used and manipulated easily, because they tend to be optimistic about human nature. For example, when snow white let the witch into the house, and only thought about helping her, rather than the consequences for herself. I got 46 agreeableness, which helps me to compromise with people and I’m also very generous. People who are high in Neuroticism tend to get anxious or stressed easily. This isn’t always a bad thing, and neuroticism can help people get out of bad situations. On the other hand, Neuroticism can make it more difficult for people to recover from bad experiences and view ordinary things as threatening or dangerous. They also are considered as Pessimists. I scored 48 in Neuroticism, and this helps me get out of uncomfortable or dangerous situations, but it can also lead to stress, and anxiety.

Knowing these traits can help us understand how other people are feeling and to react accordingly. It can also allow us to keep out of trouble. Knowing ourselves can help us understand ourselves better, and not think that we are wrong, or strange or the exception, but the norm. Knowing yourself and others can help you reach out to other people and know how to help them. Understanding ourselves can help us identify our strengths and play them to our advantages, and also to identify, and improve from our weaknesses.
