OSKAR NIGHT APPROACHES

Combining the glitz and glamour of Hollywood with the heart and soul of community spirit

The Newmarket OsKaRs, organized by members of Newmarket GAA and sponsored by Newmarket Motors and SEROSEP, is sure to be a night of entertainment, performances, and awards.

This fundraiser involves Newmarket Club members and participants from throughout the greater Duhallow region, creating and acting a short film based on classic movies and TV shows.

Over the course of two months, teams produced 10 minute short films with local talent and iconic scenes from popular television and film, and the phenomenal list of choices were revealed at a launch event.

The lead up has been busy; from rehearsals

to promotional events, undergoing filming and organising many different fundraising activities in aid of their films. But it has proven the heart and soul of community spirit. It’s not just one night of awards and performances; it’s a journey that brings together individuals, businesses, and local talents for a common cause.

The films will be showcased on Friday the 26th of April at the Charleville Park Hotel where the community comes together in celebration of their collective efforts and judges will decide on the award winners in a festive, Oscar-themed setting.

Millstreet Vintage Club Drives Generosity Forward

Millstreet Vintage Club made a presentation on Friday 5th April to St Johns Holy Well Committee at Aubane Community Centre and demonstrated its commitment to community causes with a generous donation.

The donation was the result of a successful Johnny Hickey Memorial Car Run, an event that not only celebrated vintage car culture, but also supported the maintenance and preservation of St. John’s Well, a cherished local landmark. An impressive final total amount of €1,425.70 was raised. This amount was raised through the collective efforts of participants and supporters

Fr. Ferris’s History Book Launches Limited Print-Run

Teach Íosagáin in Rathmore was lán go doras on Friday 5th April for the launch by Seán Kelly MEP of Fr Ferris’s History of the Parishes of Rathmore, Gneeveguilla, and Knocknagree, edited and published recently by Brendan McCarthy, funded by LEADER.

Among the attendees were Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne, Professor Bernard O’Donoghue of Oxford University and Cullen, journalist and author Dónal Hickey, Aogán Ó h’Iarlaithe, editor of The Duhallow Journal and, in a nice

link between past and present, the evening was rounded off by noted Kerry uilleann piper Stephen Scales playing Domhnall A Phúmpa’s Reel composed by the old Gneeveguilla piper Domhnall Ó Fúmpa.

Beekeeping Beginners Buzz with Success

The final night of beekeeping lectures held by Duhallow Beekeepers Association at IRD Duhallow was a great success.

Father James McSweeney presented a talk on ‘Swarming and working with bees and not against them’. This concluded a series of six weekly presentations by various speakers.

Congratulations to last years beginners who were presented with certificates by Duhallow Beekeepers President Andy Bourke.

Duhallow Beekeepers will be hosting practical handson demonstrations at the IRD Apiary for this year’s beginner beekeepers.

Kilcorney Tractor Run Still Has Plenty Horsepower

On April 7th, 2024, the 5th annual Ned Tarrant Memorial Tractor Run took place in Kilcorney.

Despite the unpredictable weather, there was a fantastic turnout with young and old coming together for the big event. Funds were raised for the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. Kilcorney Community

and Banteer Macra welcomed charity representatives, Chris Bennett and Tom Looney who was accompanied by his trustworthy canine companion, Jira. Before the big boys and girls set off on their machines, the kiddies led the way in the children’s run from the village down to the social

centre. Finally the big machines set off and arrived for a BBQ and music at Healy’s Bar Kilcorney. Music was by The Kelt. As of writing, the amount raised hasn’t been confirmed but well done to everyone involved!

Let’s Learn A Bit of Japanese

Let us leave the lush pastures of Duhallow this week and head to Japan, to learn a practice called ikigai (I pronounce it Icky-guy- but my Japanese is rusty). In Japanese, iki means alive and gai means worth, put together, ikigui refers to the worth or meaning in your life. It is the practice of finding what gives you meaning and purpose- and we all need that!

in life and what you should focus. Imagine a life where you found something you could be paid to do, that you love, that people need and that you are good at. There would be less Monday morning blues and stress in your life for one thing.

There are seven rules of ikigui ;

• Stay active. Work as long as you can. Keep busy.

• Take it slow. Do things with pleasure and enjoyment. It may feel normal to rush so resist the urge to hurry.

In the practice of ikigui there is a convergence of four areas of your life- what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs and what you can be paid for. The centre of all four of these aspects of life is your ikigui. Your purpose

• Don’t fill your stomach too much. Eat 80% of what is on your plate.

• Surround yourself with good friends. Strong relationships in your life leads to longevity and happiness.

• Exercise everyday- you don’t

have to climb mountains, but you can walk in the park.

• Smile often. Even if there is little to smile about, smile anyway.

• Connect with nature. Head to the Island wood, listen to the trees, the river and the birds.

• Give thanks- show gratitude to the simple things in your life.

• Live in the moment, we are not guaranteed any tomorrow- so enjoy the now. This breath is all we have so embrace it.

• Follow your ikigui- discover your passion and let it drive you.

We might not use our Japanese in Banteer, Meelin, Knocknagree or Newmarket- but we can observe the rules of ikigui wherever we are.

The Powerful Gift Of The Holy Spirit

We continue to journey through the Easter season which ends on Pentecost Sunday. On this day, the Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles and Mother Mary as they were gathered in the Upper Room in Jerusalem. They were waiting and praying for the coming of the Holy Spirit, and when The Holy Spirit came upon them in tongues of fire, they were changed forever. They were no longer afraid, and they went out and preached the gospel and were prepared to be martyred for their faith.

We read in the Acts of the Apostles the great deeds they performed in the name of Jesus just as He promised them they would. We read of the many miracles they performed in His name and how they lived and shared everything and their numbers grew daily.

We ourselves received the Holy Spirit at our baptism and these gifts are confirmed at our confirmation. This is the same Holy Spirit that the Apostles received.

Our baptism is the most important day of our lives. We become children of God, brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ. We become citizens of Heaven and there is an indelible mark put on our souls which says Destination: Heaven. All the spiritual blessings of Heaven are poured in to our souls. We are anointed Priests, Prophets and Kings. We receive the full measure of the Holy Spirit. All the gifts which are supernatural gifts are given to us to help us on our faith journey and help us to carry out the plan God has ordained for us.

Confirmation confirms the gifts we have received in Baptism as we become adult members of

the Church. It is important and essential for us to use the gifts we have been given and nurture our faith on a daily basis. We do this by reading Scripture, praying regularly, attending Holy Mass, doing good works and putting God in the first place in our lives.

The seven Gifts Of the Holy Spirit

Wisdom

Is the grace of being able to see everything through God’s eyes. It teaches us to see with God’s eyes, to feel with God’s Heart and to speak with God’s words.

Counsel

Helps us discern between right and wrong. It helps us to choose the right path to God.

Piety

Helps us to love God and pray with true devotion. This moves us to enter into a loving relationship with Jesus.

Fear of the Lord

With the gift of wonder and awe in God’s presence, we recognise the grandeur of God and how He is above all things. We depend on Him for everything.

Understanding

We come to understand our faith in a deeper way. It helps us understand the word of God and know the presence of Christ in the sacraments.

Knowledge

The gift of knowledge enables us to discover God’s will in all things and see the beauty of God reflected in Creation.

Fortitude

Gives us the strength and the

courage to do the right thing even in the face of persecution. This is a very important gift in today’s world.

As we grow in the power of the Holy Spirit, we receive the fruits which grow in us. They are Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Gentleness, Faithfulness and Self-Control.

There are also Charisms of the Holy Spirit which are given to us for the building up of the Church such as the gifts of Healing, Prophesy, Teaching, Discernment of Spirits, Miracles, Discernment, Tongues, Service, Administration and so many more. We need to experience an awakening or an infilling of the Holy Spirit by attending a Life in the Spirit seminar or similar encounter for these Charisms to be awakened in us. This is much needed in our Church today and our Church is all those who have been baptised.

As we look forward to Pentecost, let us be aware of the power of the Holy Spirit living in us and working through us.

It was the Holy Spirit that hovered over the deep and brought everything into being at the beginning of Creation. It was the Holy Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead. It is the Holy Spirit that transforms the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ at Holy Mass. The Holy Spirit lifts the lid on human limitations and lifts us up to the divine realm.

The Holy Spirit is our helper and guide and is there with us to help us pray and understand God’s word. “Behold I am with you always even to the end of time.”

Make sure you continuously invoke the Holy Spirit and you will see changes in your lives.

Cork College of FET, Morrison’s Island Campus, Macroom Centre are thrilled to announce details of their exciting new Tertiary Nursing Degree course. This is a fantastic opportunity for Macroom as this course is a guaranteed route to a Level 8 Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in both Mental Health and in General Nursing at MTU Tralee.

IRD Duhallow was the venue for a Make Up tutorial recently hosted by ex make up artist, now content creator, Ber Stokes. With Brenda Stokes as Ber’s face model, she went through some fundamentals of applying makeup.

A Paw In The Right Direction

I am Louise and I am a registered veterinary nurse and owner of Louise’s Country Kennels, a new dog boarding and doggy daycare facility in Banteer.

I am originally from Bantry in west Cork, but moved to Banteer with my partner Ger and our dog Fenton in 2020. Our family has since grown and we now have two boys, another dog called Toffee, and our cat called Hiccup.

I was lucky enough to grow up with a family of pure animal lovers. We have always had dogs, cats, hens, ducks, donkeys, and goats. My friends always joked that we were the local pet farm. I knew from a very young age that I wanted to end up working with animals.

I qualified as a Veterinary Nurse in 2011 and have been lucky enough to work in some of Ireland’s top veterinary hospitals in both Galway and Cork.

I worked in Galway for over 6 years as a general Veterinary nurse. There, I learned so much and grew my interest in surgical and dental veterinary nursing.

During my time there, I also fostered and re-homed 26 dogs for charities. It was just a passion of mine and I really enjoyed caring for these dogs who needed extra love, care, and training before we found them their forever home. It was by doing this that it planted the seed that one day, I would love to open a dog kennels.

I moved back down to Cork in 2018, where I began working as a surgical veterinary nurse in a referral hospital in Cork. Surgical nursing was an amazing opportunity, it was challenging but very rewarding. The main part of surgical nursing is having the responsibility for every patient going under anaesthetic. Every day, there was something new and exciting to learn. However, after starting our family, our priorities changed, and I decided it was the right time to take the leap and open Louise’s Country Kennels.

The Kennels consists of eleven large kennels, an indoor area for the dogs where they can play & relax, and a large dog run that I will be able to divide into 3 different sections.

My goal is to provide a safe, cosy, and fun environment for all my doggie boarders while their owners are away.

My main services include shortand long-term boarding, and a doggy daycare service where dogs will be cared for in a supervised secure environment where they can play and socialise with other dogs.

As a registered Veterinary Nurse, I also offer boarding for dogs who suffer from long term illnesses such as diabetes. I know how stressful it can be to leave a dog that needs some extra care, but I hope to offer people peace of mind knowing they are in safe hands with a veterinary nurse.

Another service I offer is post operative rehabilitation. This is where I can take care of your dog after they have undergone an elective/non-elective surgical procedure; this could be anything from being neutered or having a much more major procedure such as a Tibial Plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO). After such procedures, dogs need to be confined and medicated, and of course get some extra TLC. This can be a stressful time for owners trying to juggle work, family life, or keeping their dog in a confined area during recovery. I am here to take that extra pressure off and offer nursing care in my home for these patients.
