IRD Duhallow is excited to once again host our prestigious Duhallow Business Awards. Hosted by MC Alan Shortt, who is sure to keep everyone entertained throughout the night.
We will be celebrating the 11th year of the business awards, which aims to promote positive business and showcase the variety of top class businesses located in the IRD Duhallow region. This bumper edition of the magazine will highlight the finalists who have made it to this year’s awards.
Welcome to a bumper edition of Discover Duhallow! As Autumn settles in, we’re thrilled to feature the finalists for the Duhallow Business Awards - Celebrating local excellence, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit. We also highlight the open nights at Boherbue and Millstreet Schools. In Rockchapel, they had a stylish fashion show where locals strutted down the catwalk and showcased fashion from local retailers. In a heartfelt tribute, the unveiling of a stunning mural honoring local legend Jack Roche took place in bruach Na Carraige.

Carriganima Fun Run/Walk Presentation Night where together they raised an incredible €4,420. Both Millstreet Hospital and Macroom Hospital will each receive €2,210 thanks to their generosity. Over the past 10 years they have raised a total of €28,375 – an achievement to be proud of.
Rockchapel Parents Association officially kicked off the fashion show season with a vibrant and highly successful event at the Rockchapel Community Centre on Friday, 10th October. Attendees from across Duhallow and surrounding areas gathered for a fun-filled evening of fashion and fundraising.
Over 30 fantastic prizes were up for grabs in the ever-popular monster raffle, adding to the excitement and energy of the night. All donations were greatly appreciated.
Top local boutiques including Lenihan’s Fashions, O’Shea’s Fashions, Lady Lydia, Noirin’s Boutique, Divas and Dudes, East 73rd, and Heavenly Gifts and Interiors showcased their autumn/winter collections.
Stylish menswear from O’Shea’s
Fashions—ranging from smart casual to winter coats and occasion wear—also featured prominently on the catwalk.
The event was expertly hosted by Noreen Du Plooy as MC, with Donal O’Connor setting the atmosphere as DJ. Their dynamic presence ensured plenty of laughs and lively banter throughout the evening.
All profits from the fashion show go directly back to benefit the pupils of the small rural Rockchapel National School. The fundraising helps finance school trips, swimming lessons, and educational resources for the children. Every euro raised goes a long way.
Behind the scenes, committee members Maureen Carmody, Treasurer, Elaine Browne, Secretary and Carmel Deely,
Chairperson were instrumental in preparations. A special thank-you goes to the parents who set up the venue, sold tickets and generously contributed delicious treats for the tea & coffee reception. which was enjoyed by all in attendance.
This event could not be run without our fabulous models, who bring a stylish flair to the occasion, their hard work is much appreciated by the Parents Association.
The Rockchapel Parents Association extends its heartfelt thanks to all who supported the event and looks forward to welcoming everyone back next year for another unforgettable evening.
The wonderful Millstreet Library Knit & Natter group have been busy crafting a whole swarm of adorable, knitted bumblebees – all made with love for BUMBLEance, Ireland’s only dedicated Children’s Ambulance Service.
These handmade bees are included in welcome packs and gifted to children travelling to and from medical appointments, bringing smiles and comfort along the way.
Michelle, Eily, Theresa and Breeda proudly represented the group on their recent trip to Tralee, where they presented the bumblebees and received a warm welcome from the BUMBLEance team. A huge thank you to everyone involved for helping to spread kindness and Joy.

A new campaign, fronted by Senator Nicole Ryan, aiming to heighten awareness of the issue of violence towards women and girls will have its official launch in the James O’Keeffe Institute, Newmarket, on October 29th at 10 am.
The “Zero Tolerance Campaign” highlights that coercive, often violent, control of women is not just a personal issue, it’s a workplace issue, a community issue, a human issue. Every year millions of women are subjected to both personal and public violence and
control.
The campaign seeks to work with businesses and organisations who sign up to the “Zero Tolerance PLEDGE”, a pledge committing to a culture where domestic violence and control are not ignored, excused or tolerated. The pledge will not be just a statement, rather a promise to act, to protect and to support.
PLEDGE stands for the six key principles of the campaign:
Pay Attention, Listen and Believe, Engage Safely, Don’t Stay Silent, Guide to Help, Encourage Change.
At its core, Zero Tolerance is a community let, non-political and voluntary campaign that invites organisations, businesses and individuals to visably commit
to a zero tolerance policy. The initiatives has already seen success in areas like Dublin, supported by Safe Ireland and championed by figures such as Colm Meaney and Michael Darragh Macauley.
IRD Duhallow is proud to host the official launch of this campaign, which will be attend by Senator Nicole Ryan and members of the crosscommunity committee who have come together to guide and shape the project, and is supported by both Skillnet and the Rural Community Health Project here in Duhallow.
The launch event is open to the public and all are welcome to attend. For more information, please call IRD Duhallow on 029 60633.

I extend my sincere congratulations to all who were nominated this year. Every submission reflected remarkable commitment and achievement, and the judging process was both inspiring and challenging in equal measure.
We are privileged to once again have the ever-entertaining Alan Shortt as our Master of Ceremonies for the awards night,
Maura Walsh, CEO of IRD Duhallow

Ambra opened on April 30th, 2025, in Kanturk. It was the lifelong dream of its founder to bring a vision of a modern, luxury salon to life — and to do so in the town where her journey began makes it even more special.
Ambra was founded by Emily O’Callaghan, who has been working in hairdressing for 13 years. Her career has taken her from Kanturk to Cork, Limerick, Killarney, Charleville, and even Milan. Along the way, she became a L’Oréal Colour Trophy Top 5 finalist (Young Colourist, 2016) and a Wella TrendVision finalist (Creative Vision, 2017) — achievements that pushed her to keep raising her standards and growing as a colour specialist. After years in high-pressure salon environments, Emily wanted to create something different, a space where clients aren’t rushed or left waiting, but where every appointment feels calm, personal, and indulgent. For her, hairdressing is more than a job; it’s a way of life. Ambra was born out of the belief that hair can restore confidence, lift self-esteem, and be an act of selfcare.
Ambra’s clients range from students to professionals to retirees, all looking for polished, effortless hair that fits their lifestyle. Many are locals, but clients also travel
from outside Kanturk to visit the salon. Ambra is fully inclusive and welcoming to all, because everyone deserves to feel beautiful and cared for.
Ambra is not just another salon. It is a one-stylist experience, which means every client has Emily’s full attention from start to finish. She specialises in modern colour techniques, corrections, balayage, and luxury extensions, using only top-quality brands like Wella and Revlon. Emily constantly invests in education to stay on the cutting edge, so clients in a small town like Kanturk can access the same highend results you’d expect in a city.
Ambra is also built on values of inclusivity, sustainability, and compassion. No judgment, no rushed service, and no compromise on quality. The salon works exclusively with cruelty-free brands that align with this ethos.
Ambra operates in the hair, beauty, and wellness space, offering cutting, colour, styling, extensions, and luxury treatments. In just a few short months, Ambra has become fully booked weeks in advance, something Emily never imagined happening so quickly. Looking ahead, Ambra aims to grow into more than a salon: a destination
for luxury haircare, innovation, and education for the next generation of stylists.
Being nominated for a Duhallow Business Award is both humbling and motivating, proof that the dream Emily has poured her heart into is already making a difference in her community.

“This award would mean recognition not only for the hard work that goes into building a one-woman business from scratch, but also for the future Ambra is working towards: expanding into hair loss solutions for women, making confidence-building services more accessible, and creating training opportunities for the next generation of stylists.”
Ivy Aesthetics & Laser Clinic opened in July 2023, though the idea had been building for a few years before that. Linda tells us ”I started the business myself after working as a beauty therapist for 25 years. Over the years I have kept training in new treatments and upskilling, so moving into aesthetics and skin treatments was a natural step for me. I’ve always taken my training seriously and invested in extra courses so that I feel fully qualified and confident in what I offer.”
“My clients range across all age groups. I provide piercings, skin treatments, body sculpting, laser hair removal and a wide range of aesthetic treatments. I also work with a doctor who provides Botox treatments in the clinic, so clients have access to medical aesthetics in a safe environment.”
What makes my clinic different is the variety of treatments under one roof and the fact that some of these aren’t available locally anywhere
“I
else. For example, I am the only clinic in the area offering advanced skin rejuvenation treatments, like skin boosters, dermal fillers, body sculpting, and I have a pelvic floor chair that has helped so many ladies in the area.
Most of my clients are local, but more and more people are travelling from across Cork, Kerry, and Limerick for treatments, which shows the reputation the clinic is building.
Where would you like to see the company in 5 years time?
In the next five years I would like Ivy Aesthetics & Laser Clinic to be even more established and wellknown in the wider area, not just locally. My aim is to grow into a busy clinic with a small, skilled team so that we can treat more clients while still giving everyone the personal care and attention that makes us different.
I want to keep learning and adding new treatments, because this industry is always moving forward. I’d like my clients to know that when they come to me, they are getting the very best treatments available,
done safely and professionally.
It’s also important to me that the clinic creates opportunities locally, whether that’s through jobs, training, or simply offering services locally. I would love Ivy Aesthetics to be seen as a trusted place people recommend to family and friends, somewhere that helps boost confidence and makes people feel good about themselves.
feel I deserve this award because of the difference the clinic makes to people. Clients often tell me how much more confident and happy they feel after their treatments, and for me that’s what it’s all about. Winning an award would mean the world to me as I love making people feel good about themselves, be that with the treatment they receive or even the chat we have while they are with me.”

“My name is Mairead Twomey and I am the owner of Pawsative Steps. My journey into dog training began with a lifelong love of animals. I worked with horses and held various office roles, but everything changed when I adopted a rescue dog with behavioral challenges. I sought out a kind, science-based approach of training. I found an APDT-accredited trainer who not only helped my dog but also offered me work experience during my accredited course— sparking a passion for ethical dog training.
I gained practical experience through home boarding for guide dogs, fostering rescues, dog walking, and caring for my own three dogs—all of whom had tough beginnings and taught me invaluable lessons. I completed my FETAC Level 6 course with Creedons College in 2020 and joined respected organisations including the Pet Professionals Guild, APDT, and IAABC, all of which follow the LIMA (Least Invasive, Minimally Aversive) code.
In 2023, I launched Pawsative Steps, offering one-to-one consultations across North Cork, Cork City, and West Limerick. The business has grown to include
Mairead Twomey with Cole and his owner Eavan
Mairead Twomey of Pawsative Steps Dog Studio pictured with Marley and his owners Agnes and Kris at a recent Class at the CYMS Hall in Newmarket
puppy and adolescent classes, online sessions, agility training, and workshops in Kanturk and local halls. I also assess rescue dogs before re-homing. The response has been heart-warming, with referrals from clients, vets, and local businesses.
Dog training in Ireland is unregulated, and many pet owners feel let down by harsh or unqualified trainers. I’m passionate about promoting reward-based methods, collaborating with like-minded trainers, and educating the next generation through school talks. Pawsative Steps offers a supportive, judgment-free space where dogs and owners learn together—with kindness, patience, and plenty of laughter.

“I’m always very proud to highlight and promote local female led business whenever I can. Dog training is often overlooked and not thought of as a business so it would be absolutely fantastic for a dog training business to get highlighted or win the award. It may also help to spread the word on kind, ethical science based training making it not quite so niche as it currently is. The more successful, ethical animal based businesses there is in the Duhallow the better it is for animal welfare and relationship between dogs and their people.”
Best Food Business Finalist:
Our small business began in October 2024, just outside Millstreet in the peaceful Drishane Beg area, about 2km on the road to Mallow. I purchased and converted a horsebox into a coffee trailer, laying the foundation for a space where locals and visitors could gather and enjoy good quality coffee in a warm, welcoming atmosphere. What started as a simple coffee trailer has become a heartfelt journey rooted in love, tradition, and community. Originally from Slovakia, I grew up watching my father bring my mother a cup of coffee in bed every morning—a small but powerful act of love. That memory stayed with me and sparked my own passion for coffee. Years later, I found myself doing the same for my partner, Barbara. She would always say my coffee could transport her to another place—and she truly knows her coffee!
Barbara believed in me from the start. Her encouragement gave me the confidence to follow my dream of creating a space where people could
Jakub Pätoprstý, Owner of FOLk Specialty Coffee
feel welcome, appreciated, and enjoy a truly special cup of coffee. That’s how our little trailer came to life.
Our coffee trailer isn’t just about serving drinks—it’s about creating a space where people feel welcome, heard, and appreciated. Every cup we serve is made with love and care, using traceable, specialty coffee sourced from producers who are as passionate about sustainability and community as we are. With every sip, we hope our customers can taste the journey— from the hills of Costa Rica where the beans are grown, to the quiet countryside of Millstreet where they’re brewed with heart. Looking Ahead
In five years, we dream of opening our own coffee shop—a cosy, inviting space where people can relax, connect, and enjoy not just great coffee, but a warm and welcoming atmosphere. A place where every visitor feels at home.
This is just the beginning of our journey, and we’re so grateful to share it with you— one cup at a time.

“I believe we deserve an award because this journey, which began as a gesture of love, has brought so much joy to people’s lives, brought them together, and their continued support truly gives meaning to the name FOLk, which we discovered through our work here in Ireland.”
My name is Patrycjusz Romaszko and we run La Nostra Pizza, located on Percival Street, Kanturk. The pizza adventure began many years ago. It all started with a passion for making pizza. After a few years of experimenting, I finally managed to create the kind of pizza I had always envisioned. That’s when I made the decision to close down my car valeting and detailing business, which I had operated for 11 years.
My goal was to make great Neapolitan-style pizza using simple and fresh ingredients. Thanks to this approach, I attracted customers who are willing to pay a bit more for a quality product and prefer to eat a healthy pizza one made with high-quality ingredients, rather than something that has nothing to do with health or real flavor.
My pizzeria focuses exclusively on pizza and our own unique kebabs, which we created ourselves. We don’t serve fries or other dishes our focus is on doing one thing right,
rather than wasting time on what everyone else is selling
Where would you like to see the company in 5 years time?
I would like to open more pizzerias in Ireland.
At the moment, we are opening another location in Macroom. If things go well, I may consider turning the business into a franchise due to the high demand for Neapolitan pizza, as well as the relatively low costs of running and opening a new location.
lanostrapizzakanturk@yahoo.com
“I believe the concept is quite innovative. I moved away from the typical model where businesses try to do everything often at the cost of doing anything perfectly. We focus entirely on pizza. The dough and ingredients are carefully refined, and that’s only possible because we don’t waste time trying to do it all. It’s better to specialise in one area and do it exceptionally well than to offer many things with lower quality”

In April 1951 Dan and Maureen Buckley arrived in Macroom, where they took over a hotel then known as Ronan’s, which had just 10 bedrooms It was also the official stop for the bus and a delivery and collection point for boxes of chickens, poultry and many other items.
Over the following decades, the hotel grew into 56 bedrooms, with a Leisure Club, award winning food and many options for hosting events. Now in their third generation, The Buckley Family have been

welcoming visitors to the traditional market town of Macroom for over 70 years. We guarantee an utterly unique experience, genuine Irish hospitality and a hotel bursting with character. Following in our parents and grandparents footsteps, we continue our proud family tradition of extending the warmest of welcomes to our guests.
We serve a wide variety of customers from local regulars to corporate guests and tourists from far and wide. Our leisure centre has over 1000 members and is also a valuable resource for many local schools and special needs units who avail of the facilities to teach their students how to swim.
The Castle Hotel Macroom is deeply committed to operating our business in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. We recognise the importance of preserving the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Macroom and the surrounding region for future generations. Some recent initiatives include the installation of 77 solar panels, the elimination of plastic water bottles from hotel bedrooms by providing refill stations and glass bottles for our guests and we have also long been pioneers of large scale recycling.

Claddagh Design was founded in 2011 by jewellery designer and goldsmith Eileen Moylan. Having trained and worked extensively as a silversmith and goldsmith, Eileen launched her business with a clear vision. She wanted to create timeless, contemporary Irish jewellery inspired by Ireland’s past. Each piece celebrates Irish culture, history, and craftsmanship in a uniquely modern way.
Our customers range from local clients to customers across the world with a connection to Ireland. Many pieces are created to mark life’s important milestones such as engagements, weddings, and anniversaries. We also collaborate closely with individuals seeking bespoke jewellery, designed to capture deeply personal stories and occasions.
Every piece at Claddagh Design is designed and handcrafted in Ireland. We offer high-quality, artisan jewellery as an alternative to mass-produced products. Each piece is made to last, to be enjoyed today and one day passed on to future generations. Our designs are created from 100% recycled precious metals and set with ethically sourced diamonds and gemstones. Each one is independently tested and hallmarked by the official Irish Assay Office.
Inspired by Ogham script, Celtic art, and the iconic Claddagh, our collections are crafted in sterling silver and solid gold. Alongside our contemporary collections, we also provide a bespoke design service, working one-to-one with clients to create custom pieces of lasting meaning.
We serve both local and international customers. Through our online store, we offer a full collection of modern Irish jewellery. We also offer in-person consultations for bespoke commissions including fine jewellery, engagement rings, and wedding bands.
Claddagh Design has been featured in national and international media, from RTE Guide to The
New York Times. Our jewellery has been worn by personalities such as Angela Scanlon, presented to dignitaries in Irish Consulates in the US, and even gifted to a member of the British Royal Family during their visit to Ireland.
Each piece reflects Irish design and our rich heritage in craftsmanship, allowing people to carry a little piece of Ireland with them wherever they are in the world. Over the years, we have built a loyal following who return to us not only for our craftsmanship but also for the personal service that underpins everything we do.
“We believe Claddagh Design deserves an award because we represent the best of Irish design and craftsmanship. In a world where so many products are mass-produced, every piece we create is designed and crafted in Ireland using time-honoured techniques.”

My business, Aoife Bradley Photography, was founded in 2019, born from a passion for visual storytelling and a desire to blend photography with design in a meaningful way.
The business was started by Aoife Bradley, a photographer and fashion designer based in Duhallow North Cork. My creative background and love for aesthetic expression led me to build a brand that celebrates beauty, emotion, and craftsmanship.
I launched my business to capture timeless moments and create elegant, story-driven visuals. Inspired by the birth of my nephew, I developed the Leanbh Collection—a fusion of photography and babywear design that reflects my commitment to artistry and personal connection.
My clients include families and individuals, who value authenticity, warmth, and creative detail.
The Leanbh Collection is a signature offering that merges
visual storytelling with embroidered babywear, setting me apart in both the photography and design markets. My work is deeply personal, ethically grounded, and focused on creating lasting impressions.
I operate primarily in Cork and online. My website also features calendars, greeting cards, and notelets incorporating my images.

My business Mama is a Dreamer is an online jewellery store where I sell my own handmade jewellery (bracelets, earrings, necklaces and rings) using freshwater pearls, gemstones, sterling silver & gold filled beads. I also sell a curated range of jewellery and accessories that I source in.
It really started unbeknownst to myself in early 2022. I was working full time in a corporate role in Cork with two very small children and I had just lost my mother to cancer. I felt a bit lost if I’m honest and I was in a phase of my life where I needed something of my own, just for me. I remember buying a bracelet from a very well known department store and returning it the next day thinking, I couldn’t justify spending the money on it and maybe I could make something like that myself. At the time I had a 1000 or so followers on Instagram, when I made my first bracelet I popped a picture on online and I received messages from people asking me to make jewellery for them. This really surprised me as I had never even considered that I might monetise my new hobby.
I spent some time honing my skills and researching materials to make sure I was creating bracelets that were durable and good quality. I focussed then on creating my own website and logo,my own

marketing and over a few months launched my website. It wasn’t long before I was making orders over the weekends and in the evenings when the kids went to bed too. A year into it I decided to leave my role and to work on Mama is a Dreamer full time ,this was a huge decision for me and my husband as the business was still finding its feet but I felt that with me working at home,. I would have far more flexibility managing my own time around childcare and my two smallies.
My customers mainly come through Instagram. My following has grown steadily and now I have just under 8000 followers. I have had a lot of support locally in my village and across Duhallow which I am extremely grateful for. I offer a local pick up which is very popular. I have previously stocked my jewellery in a studio in Mallow which was great. I also set up a pop up shop at fashion shows, markets, our local hub in Kiskeam and events and this has always been a great success. I host jewellery making workshops at hen parties, community events and corporate settings which I love and are great for meeting new people and networking.
I suppose what sets me apart
know, time absolutely flies and the last few years I’ve kept the head down working away making jewellery, showing up at events and online and I haven’t really stepped back and taken stock of how much I have achieved over the last few years.”
is that I’m not just another faceless online business. Me and my business are one and the same,I’m front and centre of my brand and business which I think connects me to my customers. I offer a bespoke service to my customers. I am extremely personable and love interacting with them. Customers contact me with photographs of outfits for occasions and I make the jewellery to match, earrings, bracelets necklaces the whole lot. I love this side of the business!

I’m Irina, the founder and nail artist behind ‘Nail Studio by Irina.’ Founded in 2024 in Killarney, my nail studio was born from a deep passion for beauty and care. What began as a personal interest has grown into my profession and life’s work.
My vision was to create more than just a place for manicures—I wanted to offer women a space where they could experience highquality nail care in an atmosphere of rest, confidence, and personal attention. Every appointment is designed to be a moment of selfcare, not just a service. My clients are women of all ages who appreciate quality, safety, and a tailored approach. Many see the studio as a trusted retreat, where they can relax and feel valued. What sets my work apart is a strong focus on detail, premium materials, and strict hygiene standards. Each design is crafted to reflect the individuality of the
client, and the studio atmosphere is always warm and welcoming. While I primarily serve Newmarket and surrounding areas, my work has reached further thanks to social media and word of mouth. The loyalty and trust of my returning clients is my greatest achievement so far.
Looking ahead, I plan to expand into a larger studio and introduce additional beauty services. This next step will allow me to continue growing while staying true to the values that built the business: care, quality, and connection. In five years, I see my business growing into a larger, welcoming beauty studio in Newmarket— offering nails, brows, lashes, and skincare in one space. My goal is to create a full self-care experience where every woman feels confident and cared for. I plan to build a passionate team that shares my values, so we can offer even more creativity and warmth. Growth for me means expanding services while keeping the personal connection that makes my studio special.

What sets my business apart is personal attention, strong hygiene standards, and designs tailored to each client. This award would recognise the dedication behind my work and motivate me to grow, expand services, and inspire others in my community.”

The Beauty Zone was established in 2017 by Rebecca Murphy. I had previously worked on cruise liners across the world in 5 star spas and wanted to bring the luxury and comfort into a salon back home. I had a vision of creating a client focused beauty salon in the heart of Kanturk town. Since opening our doors, we have grown into a thriving business with 4 local girls working here. We are known for quality treatments, exceptional customer care and commitment to innovation in the beauty industry. The business was started with the aim of providing high quality, accessible beauty services where clients feel comfortable. What began as a small salon has since grown into much more than that. This year in 2025, we proudly launched The Beauty Zone Academy, a fully accredited beauty training academy offering certified courses in spray tanning, nails, tinting, waxing and much
more. This new venture allows us to share our skills and expertise with aspiring beauty professionals and contribute to the future of the industry. Our customers range from everyday clients seeking beauty treatments to aspiring beauticians looking to start their careers. We serve a broad demographic from teens to older adults and we’re also working with students across Ireland who are interested in gaining qualifications in the beauty sector. What sets us apart from our competitors is our dual focus. We are not just a salon, we are also beauty educators. While many salons focus solely on treatments, we have expanded to professional training, empowering the next generation of beauty therapists. We have also been nominated three years in a row for the Best of Cork Awards.
As we continue to grow, our mission remains the same, to raise the standard of beauty services and education in the beauty sector.
“I believe The Beauty Zone & Academy deserves an award because we’re more than just a salon- we’re building a platform for growth and confidence in upcoming beauticians. What started as a small business has grown into something much bigger. With the launch of our academy, we’re now offering structured training to help local girls learn valuable skills and build careers in the beauty industry.”
We are proud to be a female led business that supports local employment, and gives confidence to everyone who walks through our doors whether they’re here for a treatment or training for their future careers.

Daly’s Garage was established in 1980 by its Main Founders Billy & Julian Daly. Daly’s Garage is a leading farm machinery sales, service, tractor parts and agricultural spare parts business which boasts a nationwide customer base. The Garage has an excellent reputation for sourcing New Holland, Massey Ferguson, Case and John Deere tractors from the UK with one owner and genuine hours. Second hand tractors represent great value for money compared to new tractors and this is the area that Billy and Julian have focused on in the last number of years along with their family. As well as used tractors, Daly’s Garage supplies a wide range of new and used agricultural equipment and parts. The family run business is a main dealer for Major vaccum tankers, Quicke front loaders, Rossmore front loaders, Nugent trailer, transport boxes,
and Vector fence post drivers. We stock tractor parts for John Deere, Massey Ferguson, New Holland, Valtra and much more. We also have an extensive farm machinery parts section which includes parts for Krone, John Deere, ring rollers, hedge- cutters, mowers, balers, spreaders, sprayers, bale wrappers and much more. Daly’s Garage also leads the way when it comes to service and repairs. Both Billy and his sons; Liam and Patrick are qualified tractor mechanics. Between them, they provide a complete range of proactive and reactive solutions to ensure that downtime is kept to an absolute minimum and farm machinery owners can get back to work as quickly and safely as possible. Liam and Patrick are Case and New Holland mechanics who are now well versed with the latest tractors and technology. As new tractor prices continue to sky rocket, more and more farmers and contractors are turning to the second hand market in their search for a value for money alternative. The Main owner Billy has a lot of English contacts made over the last 45 years and the younger generation would hope to continue to keep these contacts and establish more in the UK. We would also hope to establish the parts side of the business a little more. Our main

Sage Cleaning Services, formerly Shaige Cleaning Services, was founded in 2020 by a mother-anddaughter team; Shan and Paige Hill, aiming to bring a fresh, inclusive approach to Cork’s cleaning industry. After researching the market, we saw a gap: many communities and businesses weren’t being properly served by larger providers. We launched Sage to offer reliable, highquality cleaning with a personal touch.
Starting with residential services, we’ve grown into a dynamic company serving a wide range of clients. Today, our work spans commercial and residential sectors—including offices, medical and veterinary clinics, and busy family homes. We also provide end-of-tenancy cleans for estate agents, post-construction cleaning, biohazard and trauma cleaning (in partnership with Mercy Hospital social workers), hoarder deep cleans, and sensitive home environments where compassion is key. Our specialist services include oven, carpet, and window cleaning, making us a one-
stop shop for homes and businesses. What sets us apart? We’re proud to be a fully female-owned and run business in a male-dominated industry. This perspective shapes how we treat our clients and staff—with trust, adaptability, and a people-first approach. Our services are backed by trained staff, full insurance, confidentiality, and a quality guarantee. Many clients say it’s our personal touch that keeps them coming back.
We’re also known for our versatility. While some companies focus on one niche, we work across residential, commercial, industrial, and specialist cleaning. Our clients range from families needing a one-off deep clean to recurring office and warehouse contracts. Regardless of the job size, we bring the same professionalism and attention to detail.
Sustainability is central to our work. We use eco-friendly products wherever possible to protect the environment and the health of our staff and clients. In sensitive services like trauma or hoarder cleaning, we combine technical expertise with compassion and discretion.

October 3rd was a very special night in Bruach na Carraige as the community came together to unveil a stunning portrait of our beloved friend, Jack Roche. This beautiful work of art was commissioned by a local, young artist David MacAodh.
This act of creativity is not only a tribute to the man Jack was, a celebration of Jack’s enduring legacy, but also a living continuation of what he himself valued most: young people carrying forward the flame of tradition. So it is indeed very fitting that a young, local artist has used his talents to produce this masterpiece.
To David MacAodh we say thank you. Thank you for using your gifts to keep Jack’s spirit alive. May your art inspire others just as Jack inspired so many. We are simply in awe of your amazing work .
By MARIE O’LEARY
Hugh was born on 28th February 1898 in his grandmother’s house in Lisrobin, Kiskeam. His mother was Margaret Murphy and his father was James O’Flaherty from Headford in Co. Galway. His father was an RIC officer. His parents lived in Tralee but, as was the custom in those days, Margaret came home to her parent’s house in Kiskeam for the birth of her first child.
In 1909, James O’Flaherty retired from the RIC and became the steward of Deerpark Golf Club in Killarney. It was here that Hugh developed his love of golf, practically living on the golf course. By his late teens, he had a scratch handicap.
He began studying for the priesthood in Limerick in 1918. He went to Rome in 1922 to complete his studies and was ordained in Rome on 15th December, 1925. He was to be posted to Cape Town, but instead he was kept in Rome and worked as a Vatican diplomat in Egypt, Haiti and Czechoslovakia.
He was still an avid golfer and at one point was known as Italy’s amateur golfing champion. Because of his talent, he began to play regularly with some very influential members of Italian high society, such as Count Ciano, the son- in-law of Mussolini, and Alfonso XIII, the exiled King of Spain. These social connections would prove invaluable to him later. He was not just a golfer however, he was also a skilled boxer, played a good game of handball and was a decent hurler!
In the early years of the war, he started visiting the POW camps. He would take messages from the prisoners and get them broadcast on Vatican radio so that their families would know they were alive. From 1942 on he was helping
prominent Jews and well-known anti-fascists, people he had known since before the war. He hid them in his friends’ houses, in monasteries and convents.
When Mussolini was overthrown in July 1943, thousands of Allied POWs were released or escaped. In September, the Germans occupied Rome and POWs were in mortal danger. Many of them, remembering O’Flaherty’s visits to the prison camps, headed to the neutral Vatican City looking for his help.
And so began the Rome Escape Line. O’Flaherty developed a network of safe houses and apartments in Rome. Aided by others, such as the British Ambassador Sir D’Arcy Osbourne, who supplied funding, and his butler, John May, who managed to find food, shoes and clothing for the escapees; O’Flaherty was able to hide huge numbers of prisoners safely. His background as a wellknown golfer provided him with legitimate access to Italian high society and safe passage around Rome and he used this as a cover for his covert activities. Within the
escape network his codename was “Golf”.
Herbert Kappler, head of the SS and the Gestapo in Rome, learned of O’Flaherty’s actions and determined to stop him. He painted a white line at the entrance to St. Peter’s Square which was the border between Italy and the Vatican. He stated that O’Flaherty would be arrested or killed if he crossed it.
Despite this threat, O’Flaherty continued his work, continually outwitting Kappler. He travelled around Rome to visit refugees in various disguises, including a beggar, a postman, a nun and even a Nazi!
By war’s end, it is estimated that Monsignor O’Flaherty and his allies had saved the lives of approximately 6,500 people.
After the war, O’Flaherty remained active as a priest in Rome. He visited Kappler, the former Gestapo leader, in prison regularly. He retired to Kerry in 1960 and died in Caherciveen in 1963, aged 65.

Alice O’Brien Counselling, Newmarket
On a recent trip to the Island Wood, we discovered the new river path. My four- legged companion was delighted with the new adventure, as was I. A beautiful new way to enjoy the woods and the river that is accessible to all. I highly recommend it.
New paths can be compared to new habits. When we decide to take up a new habit, maybe a new nutrition plan, or a new habit to replace an old unhelpful one, it can be like walking a new path. New habits are not as easy to navigate as new paths however.
In terms of our brain and
neuroplasticity, old habits die hard. Think about it like this- you go to the wood for a walk, it is obvious that you will walk on the path that is already formed there. That path is trodden from use, is easy to see and is familiar- it’s what we’ve always done. We don’t need to think very much about it and we know it is safe, we’ve walked it hundreds of times. We might not even think about where the path takes us, we just follow it.
Now, imagine you decide to walk a new path, you’d like to try another way, see what lies ahead for you. So, you begin a new path through the woods, but it is not trodden from use, it is overgrown and unfamiliar, there is more work in navigating this new path, it takes effort and energy. It would be very tempting to return to the old, familiar path. But, with
persistence and patience, your new path will become worn and easier to use, more familiar even.
So, keep this in mind if trying to form new habits, new food plans, new exercise regimes, dropping unhelpful behaviours, whatever your new habit is. It will be hard initially, it will be unfamiliar, and it will be very tempting to return to old paths. But, stick with it and eventually it will become a new path for you.
By MAIREAD O’KEEFFE New Leaf Health Store
Over the years in New Leaf, I’ve had countless conversations about coffee—our morning lifeline, our afternoon booster. But more and more people are looking for an alternative: something that lifts energy without leaving you jittery or restless. That’s where matcha comes in.
Matcha is a powdered green tea from Japan, and it offers a unique balance of steady energy and calm focus. While coffee can sometimes bring on a sharp spike and crash, matcha’s combination of caffeine and L-theanine supports a gentler alertness. It’s not just about energy either—matcha is rich in antioxidants and chlorophyll,
which help to nourish and protect the body. Many customers tell me that after switching, they feel both calmer and more focused, a welcome shift in busy lives.
Making matcha is simple but does benefit from a little care. Always use water that’s hot but not boiling—around 80°C—to preserve its delicate compounds. Whisk a teaspoon of powder into the water until frothy. If you prefer something creamier, try it as a latte with oat or almond milk. You can even blend it into smoothies for an extra boost.
Of course, not all matcha is equal. Lower-priced powders are often made from older leaves or contain fillers, which can taste bitter and lack nutrients. Koyu Matcha, which we stock at New Leaf, is shade-grown, hand-picked, and stone-ground in the traditional way.
This means a vibrant green colour, a smooth, clean taste, and the full benefit of its antioxidants. It costs more, but a little goes a long way— just half a teaspoon per cup—so one tin lasts longer than you’d expect.
Koyu comes in three grades: Green for everyday lattes or smoothies, Yellow for a sweeter, premium boost, and Red, the ceremonial grade, for the purest matcha experience. Whichever you choose, it’s an investment in both flavour and wellbeing.

For our annual Open Night, welcoming students and families from all our local national schools. The evening offered a fantastic opportunity for visitors to experience firsthand what life at MCS is all about.
Guests were guided through the school by our own students, who proudly showcased the wide range of subjects and facilities we offer, including Engineering, Construction Studies, Art, and Home Economics Displays of student work and live demonstrations helped give a real sense of the creativity, innovation, and hands-on learning that take place every day in our classrooms.
We were also proud to highlight our Modern Foreign Languages provision—French and German—now proudly joined by Spanish, our newest subject offering, reflecting our commitment to broadening student opportunities.
The atmosphere in the school was warm, welcoming, and full of pride as our students spoke confidently about their experiences and achievements. Their involvement and enthusiasm were a real credit to the spirit of Millstreet Community School.
A sincere thank you to all visiting families for taking the time to explore our school community, and to our students and staff who helped make the evening such a success. We look forward to welcoming many of these young learners back as first years in the near future.
Dromtarriffe Active Retired 20th Anniversary celebrations took place on Sunday 12th October 2025 at Dromtarriffe Parish Hall.
The occasion commenced with Holy Mass celebrated by Fr John O’Shea for members of the club. We remembered and prayed for past members who are no longer with us and have gone to their eternal home in heaven.
We then enjoyed a beautiful lunch. There was plenty of chat and stories shared as we remembered various trips and events that had taken place over the past 20 years including; visits to many destinations in Ireland and Europe for example Wexford, Belfast, Wicklow, Dáil Éireann, Scotland, Spain, Italy and most recently the European Parliament in Brussels. Blessed Bartolo Longo is one of the most remarkable figures in modern Catholic history, not only for his dramatic personal conversion but also for his tireless promotion of the Rosary. Once a Satanic priest, now his deep love for the Rosary led him to dedicate his life to spreading its practice and message, particularly among the poor and uneducated. Through his efforts, the town of Pompeii was revitalized spiritually and physically and the Rosary regained prominence as a vital tool for spiritual warfare, holiness and peace.
Born in 1841 in Latiano, Italy, Bartolo Longo was raised in a devout Catholic family. However, during his time at the University of Naples, he became involved with anti-Catholic ideologies and was eventually drawn into occult practices. He was ordained a priest of Satan—a shocking departure from his Christian upbringing. This period of his life was marked by depression, anxiety, inner turmoil and attempted suicide. Eventually, through the influence of a close friend and the guidance of Dominican priest, Fr. Alberto Radente, Bartolo underwent a radical conversion back to the Catholic faith. He confessed, renounced his former ways and vowed to dedicate the rest of his life to making reparation for his sins. He credited his salvation to the Blessed Virgin Mary, saying, “Whoever spreads the Rosary is saved!” This belief would become the foundation of his life’s mission. The Power of the Rosary
The Rosary, our Catholic devotion involving the meditative repetition of prayers while contemplating key events in the life of Christ and Mary, was central to Bartolo Longo’s spirituality. He believed the Rosary
had the power to bring peace to hearts, families and even nations. Inspired by the teachings of St. Dominic and the spiritual writings of Pope Pius V, Longo saw the Rosary as a weapon against evil, particularly relevant in an age of increasing secularism and spiritual confusion.
Longo’s devotion wasn’t just personal. He saw the Rosary as a means to lead others to Christ through Mary. After his conversion, he began teaching the Rosary to children, promoting it among the poor and organizing Rosary festivals. He also wrote extensively on the subject, producing pamphlets and meditations to help others understand and engage with the devotion more deeply.
The Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary in Pompeii Perhaps Bartolo Longo’s most enduring legacy is the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary in Pompeii. In the late 1800’s, Longo arrived in Pompeii, which was then a region of great poverty, superstition and moral decline. Seeing the people’s suffering, both material and spiritual, he felt called to bring the Rosary to them as a source of healing and transformation.
He began restoring a dilapidated church and organized the construction of a grand basilica dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. He acquired a damaged image of the Virgin Mary handing the Rosary to St. Dominic and St. Catherine of Sienna, which became the miraculous centerpiece of the shrine. Over time, this painting became associated with many reported miracles, drawing pilgrims from across Italy and beyond. The shrine became not just a place of worship but also a centre for charitable work. Longo founded schools, orphanages and homes for the children of prisoners, ensuring that spiritual care was
accompanied by concrete acts of mercy. He understood that the Rosary wasn’t merely a prayer to be recited, but a call to live out the Gospel in acts of love and service.
Legacy and Beatification
Bartolo Longo’s life was a striking example of how no one is beyond the reach of God’s mercy. His story of conversion, from darkness to light, has inspired countless people to return to the faith or deepen their spiritual lives. In 1980, Pope John Paul II beatified him, calling him the “Man of the Madonna” and “Apostle of the Rosary.”
Today, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary in Pompeii contains his incorrupt body and remains a vibrant place of pilgrimage and the Rosary continues to be a source of strength for millions. Bartolo Longo’s message still resonates: “Pray the Rosary every day. Promote the Rosary. The Rosary is a powerful weapon against the evils of our time.” His legacy is a reminder that even the darkest of pasts can be transformed by grace—and that the Rosary is a lifeline to that grace.
On the 19th October, Bartolo Longo will be canonized a saint by Pope Leo XIV.

Gile na Gile - Brightness of Brightness; The Music and Journeys of Aodhagáin Ó Rathaille
Sean Nós composer, Lorcán Mac Mathúna, joins with Accordionist, Martin Tourish (Altan), and piper Éamonn Galldubh (Jiggy), to uncover the songs and the life of Ireland’s greatest Gaelic Poet, Aodhagáin O Rathaille.
The Gaelic world fell apart during the life of Aodhagáin Ó Rathaille, and he was one of the leading chroniclers of this traumatic turn in Irish history and literature. He was born during the era of the Bardic School but died in poverty during penal times and the times of the subverted Bardic Court. He was one of the chief generators of the new movement in literature which produced the Aisling; the music of hope during a hopeless first.
O Rathaille wrote deep, bold, and fierce poetry; which the Lorcán Mac Mathúna trio have rendered in extraordinarily beautiful music. His poetry was a savage witness to a brutal and tragic time, written with clarity and always an eye for beauty in words. He wrote lyrically, with musical rhythm and alliterative pathos. The most capable poet of a new era of Irish. A poet who has not yet been surpassed. It can be said that O Rathaille is the father of the new Irish language.
We will travel with O Rathaille through his poetry. Poetry that stands as one of the clearest witnesses of the 18th Century in Ireland. Musical, lyrical poetry, which gave the poet's perspective on a world that, was changing traumatically. His unique lyrics give us a perspective divided between despair and optimism.
