verberg, Belgium – Italian coating specialist Italchimica has waterproofed 13,000 square meters of concrete at the San Siro stadium in Milan, Italy – using a polyurea spray formulation based on a methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) prepolymer from Huntsman’s polyurethanes division. Italchimica’s brief was to protect a network of concrete corridors that run throughout the stadium (Fig. 1). Each week these passageways are subject to significant wear and tear from football fans and concert-goers. San Siro – also known as Stadio Giuseppe Meazza (Ref. opening picture) – is home to two popular football clubs, Associazione Calcio Milan and Football Club Internazionale Milano. Outside of the soccer season it is a major venue for rock and pop concerts and at full capacity can hold up to 80,000 people. With durability top of mind, and a relatively small window in which to complete the project, Italchimica needed to deploy a coating system that could be applied quickly. It also needed a solution that would look good and be robust enough to withstand thermal and mechanical shocks. Having worked with the polyurethanes team at Huntsman for more than eight years, Italchimica decided to use a polyurea spray

L’incarico di Italchimica era di proteggere una rete di corridoi in cemento che passa attraverso lo stadio (fig. 1). Ogni settimana, questi passaggi vanno incontro a un grande deterioramento provocato dall’affluenza di tifosi di calcio e spettatori di concerti. San Siro – noto anche come Stadio Giuseppe Meazza (rif. foto d’apertura) - ospita due popolari società calcistiche, Associazione Calcio Milan e Football Club Internazionale Milano (Milan e Inter). Fuori dalla stagione calcistica è un importante luogo di ritrovo per concerti rock e pop, e quando è pieno può ospitare fino a 80.000 persone. Avendo come priorità la durata e con un tempo piuttosto ristretto per completare il progetto, Italchimica doveva presentare un sistema di rivestimento che si potesse applicare velocemente. Serviva anche una soluzione che fosse bella esteticamente e abbastanza robusta da resistere agli attacchi termici e meccanici. Avendo lavorato con la squadra poliuretanica di Huntsman per oltre otto anni, Italchimica ha deciso di utilizzare una formula di poliurea
