Iowa PGA Golf

In my former life I was a golf course owner and managed golf facilities. In years like we are having in 2023 people would ask if I minded the drought. I always told people that I loved “drought years”. They would ask, “Why?” I would say, “that is because we never have to worry about rainouts/ rainchecks and people play a lot of golf.” They would then ask, “What about when the course dries out?” I would tell them, “That is why we have a talented golf course superintendent (and team), an irrigation system and plus your golf ball will now roll a lot farther and the rough is not as thick”!
Today’s Golf Course Superintendents are so talented and have many resources at their disposal to help us through these drier conditions than in
years past. Please thank them for their hard work over the Spring and Summer. They work in a sport that is controlled by Mother Nature and they do a great job managing those obstacles. I won’t say that they don’t worry a bit, especially if their irrigation system is a bit older, but they are talented and reach out to their fellow turf professionals for assistance. So go thank YOUR Superintendent – remember the “Thank a Superintendent Day” is set as September 13, 2023 – but don’t wait for that day – just thank them when you see them.
We continue to have many of our PGA Professionals play well in 2022 and that qualified them for 2023 events. Jeff Schmid (63rd–73-74-74-75=296) and Chad Proehl (77th–74-73-77-77=301) played in the 2023 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship in Frisco, Texas in May. Both of them made the cut and represented Iowa and the Iowa PGA well in the inaugural event held at the new Home of the PGA of America.
Judd Gibb did a tough thing by Monday qualifying for the 2023 Principal Charity Classic at Wakonda Club in May, He finished in 53rd place (70-71-72=213).
Jay Giannetto of Elmwood Country Club in Marshalltown, Iowa won our 2022 Section Championship which gave him an automatic berth into the 2023 John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, IL. This was Jay’s first PGA Tour event. If you follow Jay on social media, he will tell you that the support from his hometown and the Members of Elmwood was overwhelming. He was very thankful for their support. Though Jay missed the cut, he showed his talents by shooting 77-73 against the best players in the world. I am sure Jay will use what he learned that week to play better and better golf in his future. Congrats Jay on representing Elmwood CC and the Iowa PGA so well.
As the summer goes on, you will see some great play out of the Amateur players as well. Mike McCoy is over in the UK to defend his2022 R & A Senior British Amateur Championship along with another past champion from 2021 in Gene Elliott. That is back-to-back years for not only US Competitors to win that championship but two Iowa Golf HOFers to win that Championship. Keep a watch on the Iowa Golf Association social media pages.
In September, Iowa gets to have two of its great golf ambassadors serve as Captains at the highest level. McCoy will be Captain of the Walker Cup to be held September 2-3, 2023. Then Cedar Rapidian Zach Johnson will Captain the US Ryder Cup team in Italy on September 29-October 1, 2023. Both of these gentleman’s demeanor as great competitors will lead them to be great Captains AND BRING BACK BOTH CUPS TO THE USA. So start the CHANT from Iowa – USA – USA –USA!

I wanted to touch base on the differences between the PGA Tour and the PGA of America. We were one Association up until 1968 when what is now the PGA Tour was formed outside of the PGA of America. PGA Tour members still hold a classification within our organization but are different that us in a few very important ways.
My fellow PGA Professionals and I (over 28,000) are the ones that work every day growing golf at our individual facilities. Here are some highlights to help explain our differences.
PGA Professionals are the leaders in the business of golf and can be found working at numerous facilities and companies across the world in a variety of career paths including Golf Operations, Executive Management and Teaching & Coaching. The PGA of America also helps its members by providing additional educational opportunities through our lifelong learning programs.
We are the national governing body that drives support to 41 local PGA Section Offices who help golf professionals and golf consumers in your local market. Programs that the PGA of America helps to oversee for consumers include PGA Jr. League, PGA Family Golf, PGA Team Golf and more.
In addition, we own and operate the Ryder Cup, PGA Championship, KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship as well as numerous member and junior championships.
PGA REACH is the 501(c)(3) charitable foundation of the PGA of America. The mission of PGA REACH is to positively impact the lives of youth, military, and diverse populations by enabling access to PGA Professionals, PGA Sections and the game of golf.
The Iowa PGA started GIVE (Golf for Injured Veterans Everywhere) in 2007. The PGA of America now uses our program as a guide for their PGA HOPE program that has a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), which enables direct referrals to the GIVE and PGA HOPE program as a form of therapy.
The PGA of America also works with the games governing bodies for the betterment of the sport.
In Iowa we work as one entity as a 501(c)(3) called the Iowa Golf Council made up of the Iowa Golf Association, Iowa Chapter of the Golf Course Superintendents Association, the Tall Corn Chapter of the Club Managers Association of America and the Iowa PGA.
To learn more about what we do as one of the 41 Sections, please go to our iowapga.com website or call our office and ask for Greg – 319-648-0026.
Thank you

Bob Moreland was predestined to become a golfer. But the retired, long-time Ottumwa Country Club professional admits fishing was his first love.
Growing up in Peoria, IL., Moreland would much rather hit the fishing hole than the golf course. It wasn’t until the age of 13 that his deep golf roots prevailed, when he replaced casting a reel with rifling a 5-iron.
“I actually didn’t start playing until the seventh grade and then really made up for lost time. Day after day, Mom would drop me off at the course at 8:00 a.m. and come pick me up an hour after dark,” recalled Moreland, the well-decorated Iowa Section PGA golf professional and Iowa Golf Hall of Fame member, during a recent interview at his home in Ottumwa. “She would give me a dollar for the day for a hot dog and a Coke. We’d play 36 holes and then putt for dimes underneath the streetlight. On a good day, I’d return home with more than a buck.”
Moreland’s golf pedigree is extraordinary. His father, Gus Moreland was a world-class player in the 1930s. Competing as an amateur, Gus Moreland beat the likes of Ben Hogan
in the Southwestern Amateur, Byron Nelson in the Glen Garden Invitational, Johnny Goodman in the Houston Invitational, Lawson Little in the Trans-Mississippi, and Francis Ouimet in an early round of the British Amateur. He played in the inaugural Masters Tournament in 1934 and was a two-time selection for The Walker Cup, where he never lost a match in singles or doubles competition.
“Dad and Ben Hogan were friends and competitors, he’s mentioned in the book Hogan, written by Curt Sampson,” said Moreland. I remember going to Shady Oaks Country Club in Dallas to watch Hogan hit 120-yard wedge shots on the range. He’d take aim at his caddie, who was armed with just a towel, and the caddie only had to move slightly in either direction to shag those balls.”
Gus Moreland eventually turned professional at the age of 53, taking a club job in Pampa, TX, and later in Peoria, IL., where Bob Moreland grew up and would eventually lead Richwoods High School to the Illinois state championship. That performance was a springboard to a successful golf career in its own right. Moreland moved to Texas right after high school in 1962 to seek his golf fortune, going to work at Cedar Crest Golf Course in Dallas, site of Walter Hagen’s fifth and final PGA Championship.
“One day in 1963, the head pro said there’s this Mexican guy who can play a little bit, and you should meet him. He paired us together, and I found out rather quickly how well he could play. That guy was Lee Trevino,” Moreland said.
Moreland and Trevino were frequent golf companions for the next few years until Trevino burst onto the PGA Tour scene in 1967 by finishing fifth in the U.S. Open at Baltusrol. He came back to Cedar Crest and told Moreland, “I can beat these guys.” A year later, Trevino won the first of his six major titles, the 1968 U.S. Open at Oak Hill in Rochester, NY. They remain good friends.
In 1968, Moreland played the PGA Tour. In those days, fewer players had exempt status, resulting in large Monday qualifiers where, in some weeks, 150 players teed it up for 30 openings in the field. “It wasn’t a very glamorous lifestyle for the also-rans,” Moreland remembers. “We traveled by car, stayed in cheap motels, and scraped by.” He stepped away from the tour and held club professional positions in Texas and at Sunset Hills Golf Course in Pekin, IL, until his life changed in 1976.
That’s when the Ottumwa Country Club came calling, and Moreland would spend the next 34 years serving the club with distinction, not only in club operations and starting one of the state’s most successful junior golf programs but also maintaining a high level of playing ability, competing in Iowa PGA Section and national events. For a remarkable 17 times, Moreland was named the Iowa Section PGA Player of the Year in three categories: five in the regular category, ten times as Senior Player of the Year, and twice as Super Senior. He won the 1981 Iowa Open and was a two-time Iowa Section PGA champion.
Strong performances in the annual PGA Club Pro Championship earned Moreland a spot in three PGA Championships: the 1977 event at Pebble Beach, the 1981 tournament at Atlanta Athletic Club, and the 1982 event at Southern Hills. He also qualified for and participated in the US Senior Open and several Senior PGA Championships. His extensive list of other golf achievements included playing several times in the former Quad Cities Open and making the cut in the 1973 Western Open in Chicago. In his prime, Moreland would play 18-20 section events annually. “In those days, club pros would play every Monday from the first of May until the end of September,” he recalled.
His playing accomplishments aside, Moreland is equally proud of the robust junior golf program he and his wife, Lynda, operated each year at Ottumwa Country Club. Between 85 and 120 boys and girls participated in a six-week program annually that featured instruction, rules and etiquette sessions, practice, and culminated with a tournament and awards banquet. Both the Ottumwa boys and girls high school golf teams would later capture multiple state championships populated with players from his program, and several would go on to become club professionals. His advice to young players today – “Get some good instruction, work on your short game, and leave the golf carts in the stall. Walking builds the endurance you need to become a good golfer. I see too many youngsters on carts.”
Among his other awards, Moreland was named the Iowa PGA Section’s Professional of the Year, Junior Golf Leader Award, and Merchandiser of the Year. The job of a club professional is demanding, juggling the daily tee sheet, running tournaments and leagues, conducting lessons, the pro shop, administration, and a multitude of other responsibilities. “I can honestly say that a day didn’t go by when I didn’t look forward to going to work,” Moreland said. “There were many long days during the golf season, which goes with the territory. It’s like joining the Mafia, you know exactly what you are getting into.”
Now 79 years old, Moreland looks back on his golf career with pride. “I’ve been so fortunate to work in a profession where you get to meet so many good people,” he said. “You can’t give up in the game of life or the game of golf. It’s a game you can play until they bury you.”

Here we are with July in the review mirror and it seems as though we had just wrapped up the ITI convention in February. Where did the last few months go?
Well time seems to fly when you’re busy and that would definitely be the case at ITI. When the annual conference is completed, the ITI staff and board of directors immediately begin working on next year’s conference. In fact, some of the details are already decided on over a year in advance. Committees have met and are working on confirming program speakers for 2024, ironing out details with the host site management, and decisions are being made on conference format. The amount of time that goes into planning the conference and events is incredible and many thanks goes to the ITI and association board of directors.
And of course, as all this is happening this year’s events and administrative tasks are taking place. The final details are being set and events are being held. Besides the ITI conference we have held two events so far this year; IGCSA Wee One Foundation Golf Tournament and the ISU Extension Fundraiser.
The Wee One tournament is new to the schedule of events in 2023. While the Wee One Foundation has been around nationally for several years, 2023 is the first year the fundraiser for superintendents in need was held in Iowa. Current IGCSA Vice-president and Elmcrest Country Club (Cedar Rapids) superintendent, Nick Kray stepped up as host for the inaugural event. On May 15, thirty foursomes contributed to the fundraiser along with our many corporate sponsors. With a near perfect weather day, Elmcrest CC provided a picturesque course with fantastic golf conditions. The Elmcrest CC staff were extremely helpful in organizing and implementing the fundraiser. So through the efforts of all those contributing IGCSA was able to hand over a check to the Wee One Foundation for nearly $15,000!
Another fundraiser was held at Brooks Golf Club, Okoboji on June 7. The ISU Extension golf tourney annually raises funds to assist ISU Turfgrass professor, Adam Thoms, with work-related travel expenses across the state. Through the assistance of Brett Hetland, CGCS, and the Brooks Golf Club staff, ITI was able to raise over $7,000 this year.
While these events are designed to be fun and provide networking opportunities for our association members and our commercial partners, they serve an important fundraising role for ITI as well. We are excited for the upcoming events and are proud to promote golf in Iowa.
The Iowa PGA is pleased to have the following corporate partners involved with the 2023 Section, Junior Tour and Foundation events and activities. For more information on becoming involved as a corporate partner, please contact Exective Director Greg Mason, PGA at gmason@pgahq.com or call the office 319648-0026.
The Iowa PGA is excited for the 2023 season and to be partnering with all its sponsors.
We would like to thank all our sponsors for their support and we are looking forward to the golf season ahead!

When the Iowa PGA Section started discussions on a new three-, five- and 10-year strategic plan for the organization last December, Golf House Iowa came up. “It became apparent that we needed to do something,” Executive Director Greg Mason said. Those discussions included the Iowa PGA Section’s Board of Directors, the Iowa PGA Foundation’s Board of Directors and the organization’s past presidents. Mason figured a $50,000 donation might be in the works, and maybe $100,000.
“But during those talks, a quarter of a million dollars came up,” said Mason, who has been the head of the state’s professional golfing body since 2017. On Monday, Mason informed his members that the Iowa PGA Section would be donating $250,000 to Golf House Iowa. The donation includes naming rights to the building’s Hall of Fame meeting room.
“This is the right thing to do,” Mason said.
Golf House Iowa, currently under construction overlooking the 9th green of the Echo Valley Country Club’s Creek course in Norwalk, will be the home of the Iowa Golf Association, its programs, a museum and the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame.
“This is recognition, from an organization like the Iowa PGA Section, of what Golf House is intending to do,” said Chad Pitts, CEO and Executive Director of the Iowa Golf Association. “They understand it in a way that they made a very significant donation. The size of their donation
gave us a big jump in reaching our goals.” The Iowa Golf Foundation is in the home stretch of a fundraising campaign for the new facility, scheduled to open next spring. Nearly 90 percent of the $5 million goal has been raised. “The Iowa PGA Section and the Iowa Golf Association have some unified goals, and one of them is to make golf a better game,” Pitts said. “Better for our players, the PGA pros, golf course superintendents, everyone who works with the game. Together, it makes golf’s whole ecosystem better.”
Erin Strieck, President of the Iowa PGA Section and the Iowa PGA Foundation, said her organization is proud to be a part of the rich history of Iowa golf. “This gift is a gesture of thanks to all who have come before us and those who will follow,” said Strieck, the head golf professional at the Pinnacle Country Club in Milan, Ill. “Golf House Iowa will highlight that history through the museum, the Golf Hall of Fame and all the programs that will help enrich the game over time. We are proud to be giving this gift on behalf of our Iowa PGA members and associates and those who serve this game in partnership with the Iowa Golf Association.”
Steve Jermier, president of the Iowa Golf Association and the Iowa Golf Association Foundation, said the Iowa PGA Section’s donation came at a perfect time from a fundraising standpoint. “For the Iowa PGA to make a contribution of this size and magnitude at this point in the campaign is just huge,” Jermier said.
He added that while the game is bigger than any one organization, the Iowa PGA Section’s donation shows that all forces are unified in one common goal. “I’ve talked to multiple club pros from across the state who are very excited about this project, and they recognize what it’s going to do for the game, how it’s going to help grow the game and preserve the game in our state,” Jermier said. “It’s testimony to how these organizations work together. And that’s a big deal. This vote of confidence from the section just means the world to us.”
The Iowa PGA Section has been part of the PGA of America since it was founded in 1916. In the original charter, Iowa joined other Midwestern states in the Plains Section. Iowa broke off into the newly formed Nebraska PGA in 1925 and then became the Iowa PGA Section in 1936. The Iowa PGA Section includes part of Western Illinois.
“Both organizations (Iowa PGA Section and Iowa Golf Association) want to grow the game in Iowa and Western Illinois,” Mason said. “We just feel when we’re together, it’s going to go better.” Mason said the Iowa PGA Section’s gift installments
through 2026.
The Iowa PGA Section operates with a three-pronged mission statement – Mission, Vision and Values. Mission represents promoting and growing the game of golf. Vision is aimed at inspiring leadership, collaboration and innovation. Values covers philanthropic endeavors to give back to the community through the game of golf.
Mason remembers one strategic meeting when those values were being discussed. He said that Ken Schall, a four-time Iowa PGA Section champion and past president (200507), spoke up and linked those philanthropic efforts to discussions about donating to the Golf House Iowa project. “He said, “What can be more philanthropic than this?’” Mason recalled.
Mason said the donation to Golf House Iowa is part of the organization’s big-picture scorecard. “We have bigger plans,” Mason said. “We want to increase scholarships, things like that. But this is definitely a way to lay the groundwork.”
The donation will also help honor many great professionals, past and present. This October, the four-member Iowa Golf Hall of Fame induction class will include Kevin Beard, the head PGA professional at Otter Creek in Ankeny from 1990-2017. Beard will become the 34th current or former Iowa PGA Section member to be inducted. Beard and this year’s other three inductees – Joe Palmer, Jim Curell and Doug Dunakey – will increase the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame to 96 members.
“We’re looking to the future but we’re also honoring our past,” Mason said.

A month after Deere & Company renewed its title sponsorship with the PGA Tour through 2025, the John Deere Classic hosted its best field in years, generating an unprecedented buzz in the Quad Cities and beyond. The tournament attracted 58 of the top 100 players in the FedExCup race, a big deal. Why? Only those ranked in the top 70 would qualify for this year’s FedExCup Playoffs instead of the top 125 in years past. Guys had to play.
In the final round, the winner, native Austrian and former Georgia Bulldog Sepp Straka, had a five-shot lead and was on a 59-watch as he reached the 18th fairway needing to make birdie to join Al “Mr. 59” Geiberger’s ever-growing 59 fraternity. Though Sepp pulled his approach into the water and made double bogey, he still shot 62, won by two and awaited the feeling that hits you when $1.332 million is direct-deposited into your bank account. (Anyone know that feeling?)
No one would have bet on Straka after he shot a first round 2-over 73. But his putting coach, Tim Yelverton, noticed that the toe of his putter was sticking up a bit and texted him. “So, I got my hand a little higher and flattened that thing out. Yeah, started online and got hot,” Straka said. He followed up with rounds of 63-65 and the final round 62 to finish at 21-under.
“Yes, it’s pretty awesome. I didn’t think I would be sitting here on Thursday after the round,” he said.
Straka said he enjoys the Quad Cities and the tournament. “It’s amazing,” he said. “It’s been here for so long. They’ve got it down. They run such a good event. The golf course is in great shape. The volunteers are all extremely helpful. One of the more smoothly run events on tour. Yeah, look forward to coming back.”
Straka was born in Vienna, Austria but moved to Georgia when he was 14 then attended the state university in Athens, which is prolific not only in football but also golf. Two weeks after the John Deere, Straka’s T-2 finish at the British Open at Royal Liverpool no doubt put him in the conversation for the European Ryder Cup team.
And speaking of Royal Liverpool, let’s not forget to mention that Brian Harman, winner of the 2014 John Deere Classic, won the British Open by six shots over his fellow Bulldog and three others, including Jon Rahm and Jason Day, both of whom were JDC sponsor exemptions, in 2016 and 2006, respectively.
Before the John Deere Classic even got going, college female athlete of the year Caitlin Clark – a West Des Moines native and Iowa Hawkeyes basketball superstar – played in the pro-am with Cedar Rapids native and Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson, winner of the 2012 JDC. The duo attracted the heaviest Wednesday crowds since comedian Bill Murray clowned his way through the 2015 pro-am. Caitlin signed autographs, took selfies and greeted dozens of young girls sporting her No. 22 on the back of their Hawkeye basketball jerseys.
For the first time ever: Concerts on the Course. Darius Rucker and Blake Shelton packed them in on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, attracting casual golf fans and, frankly, some who seemed never to have thought about golf. That was the point, according to first-year tournament director Andrew Lehman. “We wanted to expose people to golf who might be casual fans or who might not have experienced the fun of coming out to a tournament,” Lehman said. Mission accomplished. Both performers were off the charts.
The tournament had its first-ever ceremonial opening tee shot. It was struck by 1973 champion Sam Adams on the 50th anniversary of his victory at the Quad Cities Open at Crow Valley Country Club in Bettendorf, Iowa. Now in his 80s, Adams recalled how fellow competitor and friend Tom Watson left a note in his locker before their final round that said, “To win takes guts. You’ve got them. -Tom.” Adams shot 68 and won $20,000 for finishing first.
Continuing a tradition started in the year 2000, the JDC gave sponsor exemptions to several of the game’s top players. William Mouw, who just turned pro out of Pepperdine, finished T-13 at 15-under; Stanford’s Michael Thorbjornsen was T-17 at 14-under; Vanderbilt’s Gordon Sargent was T-57 at 7-under, and missing the cut were Ross Steelman and Marcus Byrd. Meanwhile, the Tour’s hottest young player, Ludvig Aberg of Sweden, shot 63 on Sunday, finished T-4. He would have received an exemption but did not need one, as he finished No. 1 in PGA Tour University rankings. Along with Straka, European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald likely is looking at Aberg as a potential captain’s pick.
After a one-year hiatus, Deere revived its charter to Scotland, as 26 players and their various supporters hopped the direct flight to Edinburgh for the Scottish Open.
And Moline native, Tony Navarro, 63, was inducted into the Caddie Hall of Fame in recognition of his remarkable – and continuing – 45-year career in which he caddied for Greg Norman and other major champions. Navarro now caddies for Nick Watney and still lives in town.

PGA Jr. League is a fun, social and inclusive opportunity for boys and girls, ages 13 and under, to learn and enjoy the game of golf from PGA and LPGA Professionals. Like many other recreational youth sports, participants wear numbered jerseys and play on teams with friends.
This program helps kids excel by introducing them to life skills that the game of golf provides. Teaching life skills including character, honesty, integrity, respect, perseverance, and cooperation.
Our goal is to have PGA Professionals partner with school districts to raise funds for the equipment. The equipment is specially designed for safe, indoor and outdoor use and comes with complete curriculum and activities, allowing PE teachers to easily implement the program in their classes. Exposing more children to golf in a fun environment will hopefully encourage their continued play throughout life.
This is a great way to strengthen golf in your school district!
