Golf is still going great in Iowa and Western Illinois in 2025. Spring seemed to be more normal as we didn’t have excess rain or super-hot conditions. Hopefully your facilities are still growing. If you ever need assistance with what your facility can do better – from operations to board structure, please give us a call as we can connect you with a subject matter expert fairly quickly.
The Iowa Golf Council, a c(3) non-profit corporation – made up of the four main golf associations in the state –Iowa Golf Association, CMAA (Club Managers) – Tall Corn Chapter, Iowa Chapter of the GCSAA and the Iowa PGA – are working on planning the next golf summit in 2026. Save the date of May 11, 2026, at Wakonda Club in Des Moines. This is meant for anyone involved or interested in golf. We include some wonderful speakers and a networking component as well. We will also be scheduling the Women’s Golf Summit in May or June.
Please don’t forget to thank your club manager, golf course superintendent and PGA Professional for all the work they do on your behalf to make your experience at your facility better and better.
For those interested in marketing with us, we will have spots available for you to place an ad. Just look for our special marketing page on the pages of our magazine. This digital magazine sends to over 15,000 people on our email list along with being sent over our social media channels. If you wish to be a part of something new in the Iowa Golf scene, please feel free to email me at gmason@pgahq.com. You can always call the office at 319-648-0026 as well.
Have fun, Play Well “Mase”

Washington, DC – During the first week of May, I had the privilege of representing the Iowa Turfgrass Institute and our allied associations at National Golf Day in Washington, D.C. This annual event, organized by the American Golf Industry Coalition, brings together professionals from across the country to advocate for the game of golf—its economic impact, environmental benefits, and community value. But for turfgrass industry it’s also a critical opportunity to ensure our legislators understand the essential role that healthy, well-managed turfgrass plays beyond the game of golf.
While golf may be the backdrop for this event, the conversations go much deeper—into the science, stewardship, and sustainability that turfgrass professionals bring to communities across Iowa and the country. Turfgrass is not just about recreation; it’s about providing green infrastructure that improves water quality, reduces erosion, cools urban areas, and provides safe, functional spaces for play, events, and everyday activities.
Throughout the day, our delegation made up of members from ITI, Iowa GCSA, Iowa PGA, and Iowa CMAA had the chance to meet with Iowa’s congressional delegation and their staff. These meetings offered a chance to tell our story from the turf up— the importance of water quality research, nutrient management programs, and funding for turfgrass science at the university level. These are not golf-specific concerns. They impact sports fields, parks, municipal green spaces, and residential landscapes—spaces that directly influence the quality of life in our communities.
National Golf Day also underscored the importance of building relationships with lawmakers. Advocacy is not a one-time conversation; it’s a long-term investment in educating decision-makers on the complexity and value of our work. Seeing firsthand how accessible our elected officials can be was a powerful reminder that if we don’t tell our story, someone else will.
Beyond the meetings, National Golf Day includes a community service project. Dozens of us spent Friday morning working to beautify the Old Soldiers’ Home Golf Course. Managed by six veterans who are residents of Old Soldiers, it was a great opportunity to for us to lend a hand to their efforts and to give back to those who served.
As we continue our work here in Iowa, it’s essential that we remain connected to national conversations and advocate for the needs of the turfgrass industry at all levels. Whether it’s supporting science-based regulation, ensuring funding for turfgrass research at our universities, or addressing workforce challenges that impact every sector from lawn care to sports turf management—our collective voice matters.
I’m proud to have had the opportunity to share that message on behalf of our members in Washington, D.C., and I encourage everyone in our turfgrass community to stay informed, stay engaged, and take pride in the vital work we do. If you ever have the chance to attend National Golf Day, I highly recommend it.
The Iowa PGA is pleased to have the following corporate partners involved with the 2025 Section, Junior Tour and Foundation events and activities. For more information on becoming involved as a corporate partner, please contact Exective Director Greg Mason, PGA at gmason@pgahq.com or call the office 319648-0026.
The Iowa PGA is excited for the 2025 season and to be partnering with all its sponsors.
We would like to thank all our sponsors for their support and we are looking forward to the golf season ahead!

SILVIS, Illinois (June 18, 2025) – Iowa PGA Section champion Jay Giannetto qualified for the John Deere Classic last July almost as an afterthought when he won the Iowa PGA Professional event at Wakonda Club in Des Moines.
“I was focused on qualifying for the PGA Professional Championship (the PGA of America’s premier event for club pros),” said Giannetto in advance of his second appearance at the Deere, July 3-6, at TPC Deere Run in Silvis. When he won a sudden death playoff on the first hole, he knew he would be spending the July 4th weekend in the Quad Cities. “It’s exciting to be going back.”
Giannetto, 43, is in his 11th year as head golf professional at Elmwood Country Club in Marshalltown, where he grew up. He previously spent nine years as head pro at Ames Country Club and before that was an assistant at Newton Country Club.
When he last played the Deere in 2023, he shot 77-73 and missed the cut. This year, he hopes things will be different.
“Last time, you’re stepping into the unknown and there are a lot of unique feelings and emotions,” he recalled. “It’s something you’ve dreamed about your whole life. This time,
hopefully I’ll be ready for it. I’ve played that course (TPC Deere Run) so many times – and played well. It’d be awesome [to make the cut] and get a couple of extra days of golf.”
This year’s tournament will be a family affair for Giannetto. He will be renting a house in the area with his wife, six children and a couple of their spouses.
Giannetto hopes he won’t be the last section champion to play in the event, as the PGA Tour plans to cut the field to 140 players from 156, which it has been for decades. “To lose it would be a bummer,” said Giannetto, who serves as Iowa PGA tournament chairman. “I hope there’s a way we can keep it. It means a lot to guys.”
Davis Thompson’s victory at last year’s John Deere Classic was one for the record books. He shot 28-under par for the tournament, one stroke better than previous record-holder Michael Kim in 2018.
Thompson, 26, will be back to defend his title at Deere Run, where the pros will fight it out for their share of the tournament’s $8.4 million purse (the winner receives $1,512,000 conveniently conveyed to his bank account via direct deposit). Will there be another record? No one knows. But the Deere is well-known as a “go-low” tournament, so it’s definitely a possibility.
This year’s field is a combination of big names, young dudes who aspire to be big names and veterans looking to get into the FedExCup Playoffs or, failing that, hang onto their PGA Tour status for next year. Big names
veterans
Rickie Fowler and Max Homa – both multiple U.S. Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup team members – and plenty of young up-and-comers, such as newly-minted pro Luke Clanton and Tour sophomore Michael Thorbjornsen, who were runners up to Thompson last year, are in the field. So is former Vanderbilt star and Deere sponsor exemption Gordon Sargent, who recently turned pro, and David Ford, who starred at North Carolina before recently turning pro.
And, like Clanton and Thorbjornsen before them, this year’s highly decorated amateur sponsor invitees Jackson Koivun, Michael La Sasso and Ben James are sure to give local fans and TV viewers across the globe a glimpse of golf’s future, if not contending for the title.
Meanwhile, Ben Griffin, who has won twice and notched eight other top 10 finishes, has committed to play. He’s No. 15 in the Official World Golf Rankings and is ranked fifth in the FedExCup Playoffs standings.
“We’re thrilled with the way our field is shaping up this year,” said tournament director Andrew Lehman. “We have a good mix of players. Veterans who have had a lot of success on Tour as well as a lot of hungry young guys looking to make a name for themselves and take the next step in their careers.”
Zach Johnson, the Cedar Rapids, Iowa native who has a Masters and a British Open to his name, also owns a John Deere Classic title (2012). Now 49 years old, he’ll be back at the Deere just as he has been every year since receiving a sponsor exemption in 2002.
A big motivator for everyone is eligibility for the FedExCup Playoffs, now in its 19th year. This year, for the first time, only those ranked among the top 70 are eligible. Used to be the top 100 qualified.
The aforementioned Kim, Sungjae Im and Daniel Berger sit among the top 30 for playoff eligibility and have committed to the Deere in the hope of improving their status. Past champions Lucas Glover (2021), J.T. Poston (2023), former World No. 1 and PGA Championship winner Jason Day and Denny McCarthy are in the top 50 in the playoff rankings while Jake Knapp, former Stanford standouts Patrick Rodgers and Karl Vilips, Alex Smalley and Eric Cole hover among the top 70.
The tournament will have a “local” flavor, depending on one’s definition of local. Two University of Illinois alumni – Nick Hardy, a native of the Chicago suburb of Northbrook and co-champion of the 2023 Zurich Classic, a two-man team event, and Brian Campbell, winner of this year’s Mexico Open – will rep the orange and blue. Doug Ghim, native of the Chicago suburb of Des Plaines who played junior golf with Hardy but who went to the University of Texas, is in the field. In 15 events this year, Ghim has made 10 cuts and has three top 25 finishes.
Perhaps the most significant recent news is that John Deere extended its tournament sponsorship through 2030. Deere thereby maintains its position as the second longest sponsorship on the PGA Tour and provides the event with the kind of financial stability it needs to continue to grow and improve.
“John Deere is the best title sponsor on the Tour,” said Lehman, who has been a member of the tournament staff for 19 years. “Their sponsorship enables the event to improve every year and provides Deere with a way to give back to the Quad Cities community through the Birdies for Charity program.” The John Deere Classic figures to hit the $200 million mark in charitable giving since its inception in 1971. Ninety-nine percent of the money has been raised since 1998 when John Deere’s sponsorship began.
Thompson’s victory last year changed his life, obviously for the better. He was invited to his first Masters and was eligible to play in Signature Events with their $20 million purses and their no-cut 70-man fields. And he said he does feel a difference.
“Just going based off numbers, the top 20 players in the world are always in those Signature Events, so I guess the field is a little tougher than a regular PGA TOUR event,” he said. “It’s definitely kind of opened my eyes to see that I’ve got a lot of stuff to work on and a lot of stuff to get better at.”
Part of the challenge would appear to be mental. A member of his high school championship basketball team, the 6-foot 4-inch 195-pound Thompson can be seen on YouTube videos knocking down 3-pointers. “There’s definitely some things [in basketball] you can apply to golf,” he said. “You’re not thinking too much…you’re just kind of reacting and shooting shots. [With golf] there’s a lot of time between shots. A lot of thoughts can run through your head. Sometimes you just have to react and just be an athlete and just hit the shot required.”
Once more, the John Deere Classic will be about more than just golf. For the third straight tournament the Concerts on the Course series will bring post-round entertainment to the 18th hole at TPC Deere Run. This year, country music star Dierks Bentley will perform on Saturday while Zac Brown Band entertains on Sunday. The 90-minute shows are scheduled to start 45 minutes after the last putt drops. Purchase of a tournament grounds ticket gets a ticketholder admission to the tournament and the concert.
“The ‘Concerts on the Course’ initiative has helped us make the John Deere Classic even more a community event than it has always been,” Lehman said. “People who might not know anything about golf now will come out to Deere Run and see the beauty of this golf course. They might be inspired to pick up a golf club. At a minimum they have a greater appreciation for our community’s most important fundraiser.”
NOTA BENE: Some of the other notables in this year’s field are 2026 U.S. Presidents Cup captain Brandt Snedeker; 2016 Masters champion Danny Willett, the beneficiary of Jordan Spieth’s epic meltdown; former Presidents Cup team member Kevin Kisner, who works as NBC’s primary analyst when he’s not playing the Tour, and two-time Presidents Cup team member Adam Hadwin of Canada.
A robust internship program sits at the heart of the PGA Golf Management Program at the University of Nebraska. 16 months of full-time internship work in the golf industry are required before graduation. That makes the PGA Golf Management Program one of the most “hands-on” programs at the University! Internships provide students the experience they need to land that first job and help them test drive all the areas of the golf industry. We have students working all over the world this summer including quite a few in the Iowa PGA Section. Here are the students you may see this summer around your area:
Makenna Carlson, Sophomore Story City, Iowa

Easton Korell, Sophomore Adel, Iowa
Internship Site: The Harvester
“I’ve been able to make so many connections here. Not only with The Harvester’s professional staff but also the pros from all over the Iowa PGA Section who come and play.”
Ben Greteman, Sophomore Algona, Iowa

Our goal is to have PGA Professionals partner with school districts to raise funds for the equipment. The equipment is specially designed for safe, indoor and outdoor use and comes with complete curriculum and activities, allowing PE teachers to easily implement the program in their classes. Exposing more children to golf in a fun environment will hopefully encourage their continued play throughout life. This is a great way to strengthen golf in your school district!
