The weather has continued to be nice this fall after a very early start in the Spring (February for many) for our Iowa PGA Facilities. We also celebrated “Thank a Superintendent” in September. When you get a chance, please thank everyone at your facility for all they do for you – from the golf course, pro shop and clubhouse staff. They go unnoticed a lot of times on the work they do for each of you to make your experience great.

This is the time of the year that our Iowa PGA Staff and our Allied Associations begin planning for 2025. We each want to thank you facilities for helping us out by hosting events throughout Iowa and Western Illinois. Without your assistance with this, each Association would not be as successful as we all have been. It is that commitment to your fellow golfers and “giving back to the game” that keeps Iowa at the forefront of leading golf throughout the nation. Even with a small population. You give our Professionals and Amateurs great venues to test their skills on the local level and then compete at a high level at the National events they compete at.

Chad Pitts and I get to talk with our players all the time – they appreciate so much that ability to hone their games locally in order to perform so well once they get to a “bigger venue”.

It is also that time of the year we get to celebrate achievements within our Iowa Golf Circle. The Iowa PGA announced its Section Award winners for 2024. Matt Erger, Owner/PGA Head Professional was named our Iowa PGA Golf Professional of the Year. He leads this year’s class by being one of the most humble and gracious winners – click here for the list. The Iowa PGA will award their Section Awards along with their Players of the Year for the Professionals and our Junior Tour (just completed its 27th year) at Riverside Casino and Golf Resort on October 22, 2024.

The Iowa Golf Association will announce its winners later this Fall and celebrate sometime in December. The Golf Course Superintendents will do the same and give their awards out at the February Turf Conference in Des Moines.

By the time you will have read this, we will have celebrated the latest Iowa Golf Hall of Fame Class for 2024 – Clark Burroughs, Michael Coppola, Bill Dickens, Greg Ladeoff and Bob Smith. All these winners represent different elements of golf in Iowa and throughout the Nation.

Michael Coppola represents the philanthropic side of golf with his generous donation and support to the Golf House Iowa project along with hosting many championships at Echo Valley. Bill Dickens represents the administrative side of golf, having led the Iowa Golf Association for a number of years, including starting the Golf House Iowa project and reviving the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame. Burroughs and Ladeoff represent the playing side of the game by playing on the PGA Tour, winning NCAA Championships and playing on Walker Cup teams. Bob Smith comes from a long line of Golf Course Superintendents and helped lead that new Association back in the 1950s. I have said many times, golf is one of the most diverse industries in the world – play at high level, administer at a high level, take care of golf facilities at a high level and be philanthropic at a high level. Now is a great time to consider the golf business as a profession.

Thanks to all of you that have volunteered, were a spectator or participated in any of our educational or playing opportunities in 2024.

For those interested in marketing with us, we will have spots available for you to place an ad. Just look for our special marketing page on the pages of our magazine. This digital magazine goes to over 15,000 people on our email list along with being sent over our social media channels. If you wish to be a part of something new in the Iowa Golf scene, please feel free to email me at gmason@pgahq.com. You can always call the office at 319-648-0026 as well.

Have fun, Play Well “Mase”

Erin Strieck, PGA | Iowa PGA President | Pinnacle Country Club

Happy Fall!

The Impact of Weather: Finding Strength in Challenging Times

I got my wife an electronic rain gauge this summer. We had a standard rain gauge, but it got broken last fall when someone stepped on it while toilet papering our yard. (That’s a story for another day). Each time it rained after we lost our gauge, my wife would ask about the amount of rain we got. She would check online or on a weather app on her phone, but she was never satisfied with the accuracy of the reports. So, I finally decided to buy a rain gauge to get a more accurate measurement of the rainfall in our backyard.

This made me think about how often our conversations revolve around the weather. Every day, we ask questions like “What’s the weather going to be like?” and “What’s the temperature, humidity, chance of rain, wind...?”. Our daily routines are so dependent on the weather and knowing what it’s going to do. This made me think about professionals in the turf industry, whose work is heavily reliant on the weather and knowing what it has done and what it will do.

I’m not quite sure where I’m going with this, but it’s been a crazy year for the weather. While some have experienced nice conditions and timely rains, others, like our friends in the Northwest corner have dealt with tremendous flooding, tornadoes in Greenfield, and strong winds in central Iowa. It has been a challenging time for some, to say the least.

The positive taken from this is the support shown for each other during these times. I’ve seen many instances of professionals dropping what they’re doing to help those in need. One thing I’ve learned in my time with Iowa GCSA is that the golf community is a family and very willing to help a fellow superintendent. It’s during these trying times that we grow stronger and see the good in humanity. As someone once said, “Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations.”

The Iowa Cup Matches: A Legacy of Camaraderie and Competition

We just finished the 57th playing of the Iowa Cup Matches. The matches are a testament to the enduring spirit of golf in Iowa, celebrating not just competition, but also the relationships between amateur and professional players. While the matches are undeniably competitive, the camaraderie that emerges from this tradition is equally significant, creating a unique atmosphere where players share their love for the game and their state. It is one of the best events on our calendars.

The Iowa Cup Matches began as a way to promote the game of golf and strengthen ties within the golfing community. Over the decades, the event has seen fluctuations in competitiveness, with the overall results nearly tied (of the 50 result matches we have been able to find as I write this, the pros lead the ams 26-24). This parity highlights the depth of talent in Iowa, showcasing the state’s ability to nurture both amateur and professional golf.

The “Ryder Cup Style” matches not only allow for strategic play but also foster collaboration among teammates. As players discuss tactics and share experiences, they not only get to know their fellow amateur or professional players better but gather greater respect for their opponents, illustrating the event’s dual focus on performance and camaraderie.

What sets the Iowa Cup Matches apart from other golf tournaments is the emphasis on the experience as much as the competition. Players arrive not just as competitors but as ambassadors of their respective teams, often forming lasting friendships through shared experiences on and off the course. The social events surrounding the matches, including dinners and gatherings, further enhance this sense of community. Players reminisce about past matches and tournaments, share personal stories, and celebrate their passion for golf. This is reflected in the behavior on the course, where respect and sportsmanship have always carried the day.

The Iowa Cup Matches have had a significant impact on the state’s golfing landscape. By helping to bridge the gap between amateur and professional players, the event has elevated the profile of golf in Iowa. I have no doubt that young golfers set personal goals of making a Cup Team in their lives, no matter which side they may end up playing for. Many have played for both, which is always special. Moreover, the Iowa Cup has also played a crucial role in promoting the Iowa Golf Association and the Iowa Section PGA. It very well could be my favorite event of the season.

We are going to continue to enhance these matches as we move forward. As players continue to participate in this cherished tradition, they honor the legacy of the event and contribute to the ongoing narrative of golf in Iowa. The matches serve as a reminder that while competition is essential, the true victory lies in the connections made and the community built through the love of the game.

Sincerely,

Book on Iowa Golf History Golden Harvest

Golf came to Iowa in the late 1800s, planting the seeds for a rich harvest of golf history. Much of that history, long forgotten, comes to life in “Golden Harvest. Iowa’s Rich Golf History.”

Written by 11-time Iowa Sportswriter of the Year Rick Brown and commissioned by the Iowa Golf Association, this book is a must-read for those who love the game.

“It’s amazing how much work Rick did in researching and writing this chronicle of Iowa’s golf history,” said Chad Pitts, IGA Executive Director. “This book gives the reader a much deeper dive into stories they already knew as well as introducing them to some amazing things that we didn’t know anything about until now.”

PGA Golf Management Students Participating in the Engler Program

Another school year has begun and we have a whole new group of freshmen playing golf, competing in tournaments, working toward their BIG TEN degree, and achieving their dream of working in the golf industry. One of the unique things about the PGA Golf Management Program at the University of Nebraska is your ability to combine your golf degree with other areas of study at UNL. We have PGA students in engineering because they want to design golf equipment, pre-med for golf physical therapy, journalism for golf media, and more.

One of the most unique programs to do at Nebraska along with your PGA Golf Management Degree is the Engler Entrepreneurship Program. Engler provides experiential, community-based learning to help students build their own enterprise from the ground up. Students engage in entrepreneurship the old-fashioned way: they just start doing it. Below we highlight two PGA Golf Management Students participating in the Engler Program along with the businesses they have started while in college.

Nate Lockman, Junior

As a junior in the Professional Golf Management program at Nebraska-Lincoln, Nathan Lockman has always had a deep connection to the game of golf. This connection, in addition with his entrepreneurial spirit, led to the creation of “The Birdie Shot”—a business that transforms golf balls into unique shot glasses.

What started as a creative idea has quickly evolved into a thriving venture. Nathan has successfully partnered with numerous golf courses across Nebraska, offering these shot glasses as a unique addition to pro shops and as a memorable tee gift for various golf tournaments. The blend of functionality and novelty has made these shot glasses a hit among golf enthusiasts.

Expanding The Birdie Shot online, selling in 48 states so far, has allowed Nathan to reach golf enthusiasts beyond Nebraska, showcasing his ability to innovate and grow his business. His entrepreneurial journey has sharpened his business skills and deepened his understanding of the golf industry, setting the stage for a promising future in golf management.

Mason Garner (Iowa Native), Junior

When Mason Garner was a freshman in the PGA Golf Management program at the University of Nebraska, he sought to broaden his options around the love he has for the game of golf and the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Discovering the Engler Entrepreneurship Program, he was immediately captivated by its offerings. Adding a minor in entrepreneurship, he eagerly embraced courses that encouraged his creative pursuits.

Having completed his sophomore year at the University of Nebraska, Mason is currently interning at Red Sky Golf Club in the Vail Valley of Colorado. He plans to return to campus in the spring to delve deeper into his entrepreneurial aspirations. With a passion for clothing and accessories, Mason aims to fuse his love for golf with those interests.

All players will play their own individual ball from tee to green on each hole. There will be awards presented to the top 3 finishers from each division for the individual competition.

There will also be a team component: players will be in teams of 2 (maybe from the same or different divisions). Western Iowa Pee Wee Open July

Quad Cities Junior and Pee Wee at Glynns Creek July 23, 2024 | Glynns Creek Golf Course

Long Grove, Iowa – The Quad Cities Junior and Pee Wee at Glynns Creek was an Eagle point event on the 2024 Iowa PGA Junior and Pee Wee Tour held at Glynns Creek Golf Course.

Due to the event yesterday at Glynns Creek being cut down to weather we are having to modify how we score and award. Any divisions that finished all of their holes, this won’t affect you. What we are going to do is determine the winner by counting the holes that the final group in each age division finished through. For example, if the last group in an age division was only able to play 15 holes, the competition will be scored through 15 holes. Player of the Year Points will we be awarded out accordingly. The Tournament Info Page results will reflect this as well.

Special thanks to PGA Head Professional Josh Bowlin and the entire Glynns Creek Golf Course staff for hosting this event.

Iowa PGA Foundation Swings with Kids Program

How Does the Swings with Kids Program Work?

Our goal is to have PGA Professionals partner with school districts to raise funds for the equipment. The equipment is specially designed for safe, indoor and outdoor use and comes with complete curriculum and activities, allowing PE teachers to easily implement the program in their classes. Exposing more children to golf in a fun environment will hopefully encourage their continued play throughout life. This is a great way to strengthen golf in your school district!
