In 2023 we had a drought. So far in 2024 some parts of the state – mostly in the North, are battling daily rains and now flooding. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those that are battling those devasting floods whether at their home(s) or their golf facilities. I built a golf course with my late partner, PGA Professional Mark Lemon, called Airport National in Cedar Rapids in 1993. We battled some record rains in 1993 but still found a way to get the golf course open in 1994. Along with others we battled rains/ flooding in 1998, 2003 and then again in 2008. In 2008, the course I built, Legend Trail was also struck by an EF-5 Tornado, followed two weeks later to record flooding at the two other courses we owned/managed – All Golf Center in Waterloo and Waverly Municipal Golf Course where we had four holes under water for a couple of weeks. So, I truly feel your pain.

I bring this to your attention as Toad Valley Owner Allison George, Past Iowa PGA President, John Valliere, Iowa Turfgrass Institute(ITI)/Ames Golf & CC Superintendent Brian Abels and I attended the National Golf Day in Washington DC on May 8-10, 2024. We met with out two Senators staff

and with three of the four House of Representatives on behalf of the golf industry.

Our three key asks in 2024 were:

1. Turfgrass Research – part of the farm bill – received $3 million in 2023 but are asking for $5 million. Some of this money actually comes back to Iowa State/ITI – so our legislators have a vested interest. Lots of informing them of the importance.

2. PHIT Act – this one is a tough one as it is too encompassing but would be a positive for the golf industry so people could write off their greens fees as part of the health benefits

3. Modernizing the Tax Code – this one must be changed, and we are trying to get it as a separate tax bill. Somehow in 1976, golf courses were put on the “sin list” – to go along with massage parlors, hot tub facilities and the like. Back in 1976 country clubs were looked down upon as a rich persons place where nowadays the public golf is more accessible than ever before. But in DC’s copy and paste world – we keep getting pasted into any new disaster relief efforts in order to get the bill passed to get money to the people that need it. As someone that received a low-interest (3%) 30-year loan in 1993 to continue building Airport National versus no disaster relief in 2008 from a tornado followed 2-weeks later by historic flooding, this one hit home and why I will continue to fight hard on this. The experience in 1993 – even though it was a loan and not a gift/grant was way more positive than the one in 2008 when we were denied it.

The key one being the third ask. We MUST get this changed as some day this may affect one of our over 300 9-hole courses in Iowa. If you ever get a chance to talk with your legislatures in Iowa or DC – help us get this changed as times have changed. Most 9-hole golf courses in Iowa, thought called Country Club’s are not what most people think of in the US. These are centers of entertainment, quality of life benefits of a small town and in general a great place for kids to grow up at. If you ever want to talk to me about this, feel free to call or email me so we can get this accomplished and save a golf course in the future.

I was honored to attend the Grand Opening of Golf House Iowa in Norwalk on May 30th, right by Echo Valley Country Club. Iowa finally has a home for a museum and for the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame. The Iowa Golf Association Foundation has raised $4.5 million of their $5 million dollar goal. Thank you to Michael Coppola for his generous donation of land and money to house this wonderful celebration of golf in Iowa. It could not have happened without his lead donation of $1 million and land. When you get a chance to tour this place, please do as our history in golf in Iowa is surprisingly wonderful and awesome. Congratulations to all that have and will continue to be a part of this project.

For those interested in marketing with us, we will have spots available for you to place an ad. Just look for our special marketing page on the pages of our magazine. This digital magazine goes to over 15,000 people on our email list along with being sent over our social media channels. If you wish to be a part of something new in the Iowa Golf scene, please feel free to email me at gmason@pgahq.com. You can always call the office at 319-648-0026 as well.

Have fun, Play Well “Mase”

A FUN Way to Make an Impact

Dale Carnegie is quoted as saying, “People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing.” The Iowa Golf Course Superintendent’s Association held the 2nd Annual Wee One Fundraiser at Finkbine Golf Course, Iowa City on May 20. And I would definitely categorize it as a success and I think I can speak for those that participated, we had fun! Thirty-two foursomes enjoyed 18 holes of golf on an absolutely beautiful day on a beautiful course. A little rain in the early morning gave us a bit of apprehension but by the time the golfers teed off at 10:00am the clouds had cleared they day turned picture perfect.

A fun day for sure all while raising money for a great cause. The Wee One Foundation was developed as a tribute to Wayne to assist golf course management professionals (or their dependents) who incur overwhelming expenses due to medical hardship without comprehensive insurance or adequate financial resources. Through the Foundation’s work, Wayne’s legacy will never be forgotten. Since its inception in 2004, membership within the Wee One Foundation has grown to over 350 in 27 states. More importantly, the Wee One Foundation has gifted over $2,000,000 to families in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and WisconsinAs the Wee One grows more people are helped and more funds are needed to distribute. Please consider contributing today. The Cause: to help golf course management professionals and their dependents that are having trouble paying medical bills due to the lack of comprehensive insurance or adequate financial resources.

I am happy to announce that this year we were able to raise over $16,000 to be added to the Wee One Foundation! Of course, this doesn’t happen without the support and effort of many individuals. Tim Gravert, Iowa GCSA Board Member and former Finkbine superintendent put a tremendous amount of time and work into planning the event. Drew Boekholder, current Finkbine Superintendent, and his crew had the course in tremendous condition. And of course, events such as this do not happen with the support of our corporate sponsors and those that attended the event.

If you are interested in making a donation to the Wee One Foundation you can do so at the Wee One Foundation webpage

And then on June 5, the ITI held its annual ISU Extension Fundraising golf tournament. This year it was held at Veenker Golf Course, Ames. Another gorgeous day for golf, and another phenomenal golf course. Twenty-Two teams helped raise over $7,000 which will go toward travel expenses for the Iowa State University turf professors as they travel about the state providing guidance to turf professionals. What a great benefit to our members! Thanks to Tom Meier, Veenker superintendent, for hosting. And thanks to those that participated and our corporate sponsors.

These are fun events with many lasting memories made but more importantly the dollars generated will make a lasting impact to those serving in the turfgrass profession. Check out the Iowa Turfgrass or the Iowa GCSA websites to view and register for the events.

Thanks to our 2024 Season Long Sponsors

STRAKA, SPIETH, CANTLAY, DAY HIGHLIGHT JOHN DEERE CLASSIC FIELD

Concerts by Lainey Wilson & Counting Crows After Play

SILVIS, Illinois (June 29, 2024) – Sepp Straka will defend his title against the likes of Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay, Jason Day and 152 other contestants at the $8 million John Deere Classic, July 3-7, at TPC Deere Run.

Great golf is only the beginning of the holiday fun, because Concerts on the Course is back again this year on the weekend. On Saturday night legendary live rockers Counting Crows will entertain the crowd and on Sunday the honor falls to Grammy Award winning country singer Lainey Wilson.

“We are very excited to welcome back Sepp Straka to defend his championship here at TPC Deere Run,” said John Deere Classic tournament director Andrew Lehman. “Sepp’s exciting come-from-behind victory last year provided many the kind of dramatics fans of our tournament have experienced for many years.

“We also are excited to welcome back our 2013 and 2015 champion, Jordan Spieth, who won his first tournament here in 2013 and doubled it up in 2015.

“And we are thrilled to welcome Counting Crows and Lainey Wilson to Concerts on Course,” Lehman said. “Last year was the first year of Concerts on the Course and it was a huge success and we are very happy to be able to bring it back this year.”

Straka, who claimed victory last year on the strength of his final round 9-under par 62, has eight top 25s in 17 starts in 2024, including four top 10s. Cantlay is ranked No. 8 in the world and recently finished T-3 at the U.S. Open. Spieth, a three-time major champion, is returning to the Quad Cities for the first time since his 2015 victory, his second here. Day, who began his career at the John Deere, has made 13 of 16 possible cuts this year and has four top 10s.

The past champions cohort is led by Cedar Rapids native Zach Johnson (2012), J.T. Poston (2022), Lucas Glover (2021), Dylan Frittelli (2019), Michael Kim (2018) and Ryan Moore (2016).

Other contestants ranked among the top 100 in the world are Korea’s Sunjae Im, Denny McCarthy, Eric Cole, last year’s runner up Brendan Todd, Keith Mitchell and Maverick McNealy.

Following the policy that John Deere Classic has had for years, the tournament leaders continue to do their part to give young players the opportunity to test their skills against PGA Tour players. This year, sponsor exemptions have gone to decorated current and former college players Neal Shipley, Cole Sherwood, Luke Clanton and Jackson Buchanan.

Other young players in the field are Nick Dunlap, who won on Tour and turned pro out of Alabama, and Michael Thorbjornsen, the Stanford product who played in the John Deere last year and finished No. 1 in PGA Tour University standings.

Players out of the University of Illinois are Buchanan, who will be a senior there; Nick Hardy of Northbrook and Adrien Dumont de Chassart. Two other players from the Chicago area are Kevin Streelman and Doug Ghim.

The 53rd edition of the Quad Cities-based PGA Tour event will be conducted July 3-7 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, where Sepp Straka will defend his title. The tournament will offer an $8 million purse.

The John Deere Classic, which includes Birdies for Charity, is a 501(C)3 non-profit organization located in the John Deere Classic tournament offices at 15623 Coaltown Road, East Moline, Illinois. Since its founding in 1971, the tournament has helped raise more than $174 million for charity.

Evan Schofield - Cedar Falls, Iowa

Cedar Falls High School

Beaver Hills Country Club

Iowa PGA Junior Tour Alum

Growing up playing golf in Iowa is phenomenal. There are so many high-quality courses in this state that I have been very fortunate to play because of the Iowa Junior PGA and the IGA. When I was little, I remember playing in junior golf tournaments at Beaver Hills and doing the station work at the range and at the putting green. It’s been crazy to look back and remember those times and now being able to teach the kids who were in my position at Beaver Hills.

I cannot wait to get on campus in Lincoln. I’m super excited to be a part of the PGM team. One of the things that I am looking forward to with the PGM program is grinding in the simulators and meeting new friends. I am also looking forward to participating in the competitive aspect of the PGM program. I can’t wait to call Nebraska home for the next four years. Go Big Red!

What I have loved about growing up in Iowa is how many amazing golf courses are within a short distance of where I have lived. I’ve been able to golf at some really prestigious courses very close to home.

I’m looking forward to the networking opportunities that UNL PGA Management will provide. My roommates are all PGA Management majors as well, so being able to be around others who love golf, as much as I do, has me excited for this next chapter in my life!

Jack Patrick Hansen - Jefferson, Iowa

I loved growing up playing golf in Iowa because it prepared me to play in all types of weather.

I am excited for the internships available through the Nebraska PGA Golf Management Program.

The thing I loved about growing up in golf in Iowa has been the range of competition. There are so many tournaments you can play in all over the state and the level of competition is a very wide range with golfers at all levels.

The thing I’m most looking forward to at Nebraska PGM is just all of the golfing, checking out all the courses Lincoln has, and golfing with everyone in the program.

Vincent Koelling - Kingsley, Iowa

Growing up in Iowa I learned to appreciate the summer golf season. We don’t get to golf year round so I took advantage when I could.

I am looking forward to playing golf on more challenging courses in college.

How Does the Swings with Kids Program Work?

Our goal is to have PGA Professionals partner with school districts to raise funds for the equipment. The equipment is specially designed for safe, indoor and outdoor use and comes with complete curriculum and activities, allowing PE teachers to easily implement the program in their classes. Exposing more children to golf in a fun environment will hopefully encourage their continued play throughout life.

This is a great way to strengthen golf in your school district!
