Greg Mason, PGA | Iowa PGA | Executive Director
We have one of those Indian Summers going. What a great Fall Season – the best time to golf. We are heading to the end of our 2025 season but still have lots to go – election for the new Iowa PGA Secretary and four open board seats, Iowa Golf HOF induction for the Class of 2025, District 8 meetings, PGA Annual Meeting in Frisco where we get to induct one of Iowa Golf’s Legends – JD Turner and we start to plan for the 2026 season.
This is the time of the year that our Iowa PGA Staff and our Allied Associations begin planning for 2025. We each want to thank any golf facility for helping us out by hosting events throughout Iowa and Western Illinois. Without your assistance with this, each Association would not be as successful as we all have been. It is that commitment to your fellow golfers and “giving back to the game” that keeps Iowa at the forefront of leading golf throughout the nation. Even with a small population. You give our Professionals and Amateurs great venues to test their skills on the local level and then compete at a high level at the National events they compete at. Thanks to all of you that have volunteered, were a spectator or participated in any of our educational or playing opportunities in 2025
Chad Pitts and I get to talk with our players all the time – they appreciate so much that ability to hone their games locally in order to perform so well once they get to a “bigger venue”.
It is also that time of the year we get to celebrate achievements within our Iowa Golf Circle. The Iowa PGA announced its Section Award winners for 2025. Luke Donah, PGA Head Professional at Cedar Rapids Country Club was named our Iowa PGA Golf Professional of the Year. He leads this year’s class by being one of the most humble and gracious winners – click here for the list. The Iowa PGA will award their Section Awards along with their Players of the Year for the Professionals and our Junior Tour (just completed its 28th year) at Riverside Casino and Golf Resort on October 21, 2025.
The Iowa Golf Association will announce its winners later this Fall and celebrate sometime in December. The Golf Course Superintendents will do the same and give their awards out at the February Turf Conference in Des Moines.
Chad Pitts talks about the historic win that Mike McCoy had in another USGA event. We welcomed two new Executive Directors to our Iowa Golf Council to assist Chad and I with all things on the IGC – Rheanne Kinney, GM at the Wakonda Club and Matt Beatty with the ITI/Golf Course Superintendents and two other boards he serves. We are exploring doing another Economic Impact Study to be released in 2026. We have done two of these in the past. Until you see the numbers, you don’t realize how much golf impacts the state of Iowa and Western Illinois. Click here for the one in 2015. That year we were an $817.5 Million Dollar industry. Our guess is we will be approaching $1 Billion dollars of impact in the state of Iowa.
We can’t wait to celebrate JD Turner being inducted into the PGA of America Hall of Fame in November in Frisco, Texas –home of the PGA of America. He will join another Iowa legend, Jock Olson in that hall. JD will go in with some wonderful people in his class – Past PGA of America President Jim Richerson, PGA; Ronny Glanton, PGA from North Texas; LPGA Tour Star Nancy Lopez; Trick shot Artist Dennis Walters and renowned teacher Jim McClean, PGA.
We are having some wonderful and continued success with all things GOLF in 2025. We can’t wait to see what 2026 will bring.
For those interested in marketing with us, we will have spots available for you to place an ad. Just look for our special marketing page on the pages of our magazine. Erin Strieck, PGA | Iowa PGA President | Pinnacle Country Club
Dear Iowa PGA Section Members,

As the final days of my term as President of the Iowa PGA Section approach, I find myself reflecting with gratitude, humility, and pride on the experiences we have shared and the progress we have achieved together. Serving as your President has truly been one of the greatest honors of my professional career—a journey marked not only by the accomplishments we have celebrated, but also by the relationships forged, the challenges overcome, and the spirit of camaraderie that defines our section.
Our continued success in the Iowa Section is not possible without the unwavering commitment of our members. Your support, whether as participants, volunteers, mentors, or advocates, has been the driving force behind every success story. I am continually inspired by those who dedicate themselves to the betterment of our section and the game we love.
One of our proudest achievements has been the continued expansion of our junior programs. We have witnessed firsthand the power of golf to inspire, unite, and transform lives. Our junior tour continues to grow, providing young golfers with opportunities to compete, learn, and develop skills that extend far beyond the game itself.
I urge all members to remain engaged with these efforts—whether by volunteering at junior events, offering advice to aspiring players, or simply sharing the joy of golf with a young person in your life. It is in these moments that our legacy takes root and flourishes.
As I prepare to hand over the responsibilities of President to JR Millar, I am filled with optimism for the future. I know that JR and his leadership will bring fresh perspective, new energy, and a steadfast commitment to our shared goals. I stand ready to support him in every way possible and encourage all members to do the same.
This journey has been deeply meaningful to me—not just for the professional growth it has afforded, but for the friendships and connections I have made along the way. I have learned from each of you, drawing inspiration from your stories, your dedication, and your passion for golf.
With sincere appreciation, Erin A. Strieck

Connecting with Iowa GCSA Members on the Course

Matt Beatty, Executive Director Iowa Turfgrass GCSAA Iowa Chapter
Over the past eight months, I’ve had the opportunity to travel across Iowa and visit many of our golf course superintendents and their facilities. Each visit has been a chance to listen, learn, and see firsthand the incredible work they are doing to maintain and elevate the game of golf in our state.
These visits are about more than catching up—they’re an important way to stay connected to the real challenges and successes faced every day. From labor shortages and water restrictions to unpredictable weather and the pride of hosting a tournament or completing a major renovation, these experiences shape how the Iowa GCSA responds to member needs.
No two courses are alike, and it’s been inspiring to see the creativity and professionalism that goes into every operation. I’ve walked renovated holes, looked over new irrigation systems, and seen how they are managing limited resources while still delivering outstanding playing conditions for golfers.
I’ve also heard how much members value these visits—especially those who may not attend conferences or field days regularly. For many, it’s the first chance to have a direct conversation with someone from our team, and it opens the door to ongoing support, new ideas, and stronger connections across the association. These conversations help us better advocate for the profession and guide programming that reflects the realities on the ground. We want every member to feel seen, heard, and supported.
My goal is to continue visiting members throughout the year, learning more about course operations, and sharing the stories of the great work happening across Iowa golf.
Thank you to all the superintendents who have opened their doors and shared their time so far. It’s been a rewarding experience, and I look forward to highlighting more of their efforts in the months ahead.

Mike McCoy Makes History with USGA Senior Amateur Victory

If you were anything like us here at the IGA, you were glued to your phones or monitors following multiple Iowans at the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship that was held in late August. When the dust had settled, Mike McCoy of Des Moines, Iowa added another chapter to his legendary amateur golf career.
With his victory in the 2025 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship, McCoy became the first player in history to win both the U.S. Mid-Amateur and the U.S. Senior Amateur, solidifying his place among the all-time greats of amateur golf. For most of us, it further cemented McCoy as the most decorated amateur golfer the state has ever produced.
McCoy, a member of the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame, has long been synonymous with excellence in Iowa golf. His résumé is staggering: an 11-time Iowa Golf Association Player of the Year, the 2013 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, a member of the 2015 U.S. Walker Cup team, and the captain of the victorious 2023 U.S. Walker Cup squad. With this most recent triumph at the Senior Amateur, McCoy has further proven his career will live in our history books.
For Iowa golfers, McCoy has long been a beacon of inspiration. He represents the rare blend of regional pride and national achievement, proving that players from the heartland can rise to the very top of the amateur ranks. McCoy’s career serves as a roadmap for what is possible through hard work, perseverance, and a deep respect for golf’s traditions. Much of McCoy’s development can be traced back to the opportunities provided by the Iowa Golf Association (IGA).
The state’s rich schedule of point events—such as the Iowa Masters in Ames, the Fort Dodge Amateur, and the Northwest Amateur in Spencer—gave McCoy the chance to test himself against the best players in Iowa year after year. Those tournaments provided both the proving ground and the motivation for McCoy to sharpen his skills.
McCoy has often credited the “strong amateur golf scene in Iowa” for his national success. By cutting his teeth in those events, he developed not only the game that would eventually capture titles, but also a deep respect for the community and camaraderie that amateur golf fosters.
His impact, however, goes well beyond his own accomplishments. By competing at the highest levels McCoy has exemplified the values of sportsmanship and loyalty to the game. That connection has inspired countless younger players to dream big while appreciating the opportunities they have at the local and state level.
The significance of McCoy’s achievements cannot be overstated. To win the U.S. Mid-Amateur in 2013 was itself a crowning moment, earning him a spot in the 2014 Masters Tournament at Augusta National and opening the door to international competition in the Walker Cup. Now, more than a decade later, to win the U.S. Senior Amateur showcases

not only his enduring skill but also his remarkable competitive longevity. Few golfers, at any level, have achieved success across such a wide span of their careers.
When McCoy captained the U.S. Walker Cup team in 2023 he showed his ability to inspire others to rise to the moment. For Iowa golfers, his leadership on the world stage is another point of pride—proof that one of our own could guide the very best American amateurs in the game’s most prestigious team competition.
Now, with the Senior Amateur title, McCoy’s story has come full circle. From his early days competing in Iowa’s summer events, to conquering the national stage in the Mid-Amateur, to leading the Walker Cup team, and now his triumph at the U.S. Senior Am, his career has been one of consistency, achievement, and inspiration.
With this victory, Mike McCoy has etched his name in golf history yet again. For Iowa, he will forever stand as the state’s greatest amateur golfer—a champion, a leader, and an inspiration whose legacy will continue to shape the game for years to come.

PGA Golf Management Program University of Nebraska Competing in Tournaments
A large and important part of the PGA Golf Management Program at the University of Nebraska is competing in tournaments. Students will soon become golf professionals because, first of all, they love this game. While Nebraska teaches them the business, communications, and coaching side of golf on their path toward PGA Membership, it is important to maintain your golf game.
Nebraska PGA Golf Management hosts 15 tournaments per semester where students compete for prize money they can use to buy equipment, to win championships, and qualify for the travel team that competes against other PGA Golf Management Universities around the country. This past year many Iowans have competed and won including Abbie Lindeman (Grundy Center), Anders Palmquist (NIACC), Jackson Koebernick (NIACC), Ethan Konz (Council Bluffs), Evan Schofield (Cedar Falls), and Easton Korell (Adel). Additionally, Konz, Korell, and Schofield qualified for a travel roster in the last school year with all three bringing home the CONE CUP in Oklahoma and Evan Schofield making the 6 man roster for the Kelbel Cup at TPC Las Vegas.
