Senior PGA Professional Championship
What a nice weather year 2023 was. Not a lot of rain which means golf courses were busy, busy, busy. We had the same thing on our Iowa PGA events for the Professionals and the Junior Golfers – only a couple of minor rain delays. We had record rounds and memberships being played on the Junior Tour.
We still have some of our Iowa PGA Professionals still competing in National events. We have highlighted the Senior Professionals in this edition of the magazine as they compete in October for a chance to play in the 2024 KitchenAid PGA Senior Professional Championship. In 2023 we had Jeff Schmid and Chad Proehl compete and make the cut. Good luck as we hope to have all of our contestants qualify.
The CUPS in 2023…we got half of the Cups back. We had two wonderful native Iowans as the Captains of their respective teams. Mike McCoy led the US Walker Cup team from a 3-point deficit on the last day to take the Cup by the score of 14.5 to 11.5 at the historic Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland. This was the US’s fourth consecutive victory in the Walker Cup. Congrats Captain Mike for a job well done leading the team!
The Ryder Cup…the US Team fought hard led by Captain Zach Johnson but fell short in Sunday singles after watching the European Team play well over the first two days of Foursome and Four-Ball play. The players showed the same grit that Zach has always shown as they fought to the end before surrendering the victory in Italy. This just means the US team must find a way in four years to overcome not winning on foreign soil since 1993.
All of our Associations are moving towards our Annual Awards season. The Iowa Golf Hall of Fame will have its induction ceremony at Des Moines Golf on October 19, 2023. The Iowa Golf Association will name its winners and celebrate them on December 16th at Terrace Hills in Altoona, IA. From their Players of the Year to their awarding of the Golf Courses of the Year, Superintendent and Golf Professional of the Years will be honored along with some other very deserving award winners. The Iowa Chapter of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America will host their awards for 2023 in 2024 in February at their annual meeting. The Iowa PGA will award their Section Awards along with their Players of the Year for the Professionals and our Junior Tour (just completed its 26th year) at Riverside Casino and Golf Resort on October 24, 2023.
Thanks to all of you that have volunteered, were a spectator or participated in any of our educational or playing opportunities in 2023.
For those interested in marketing with us, we will have spots available for you to place an ad. Just look for our special marketing page on the pages of our magazine. This digital magazine goes to over 15,000 people on our email list along with being sent over our social media channels. If you wish to be a part of something new in the Iowa Golf scene, please feel free to email me at gmason@pgahq.com. You can always call the office at 319-648-0026 as well.
Have fun, Play Well “Mase”Erin
Happy Fall!
I just wanted to take some time to thank all of the golf facilities in Iowa and Western Illinois that hosted an event for the Iowa PGA and or Allied Associations in 2023. Our PGA Professionals do such a wonderful job of supporting our programming and that includes hosting our events.
They host these events in our Section:
• Professional’s that play most Mondays from April through October
• Junior Tour and Pee Wee Tour from April through September
• Drive, Chip & Putt - Locals, sub-Regionals and Regionals
• PGA JR League – Locals and Section Championship
• State Championships for High School Boys and Girls in the Spring and Fall
• Participate in our Iowa PGA Golf Pass that benefits Junior Golf and the American Cancer Society
The Iowa PGA has 120 recognized “facilities” where PGA Members/Associates are employed. These include 86 green grass, 16 indoor/stores/standalone range and 18 Association/Colleges/Sales Reps. As a testament to the above and how they support our programs and events. We hosted sixty-five (65) Junior Tour Events in 2023 at fifty-seven (57) different facilities. That means that 66.2% of our PGA run facilities participated in hosting an event. That is an incredible buy-in from those PGA Professionals.
As we move into our 2023 Strategic Plan, our Section leadership continues to follow our past leaders by placing a huge emphasis on growing the game through our youth or junior golfer. We continue to embrace our past as we continue to strive for the future of growing the great game of golf. Shown by the length of our successful programming as each of these have just completed the following:
• 43rd year of the Junior Academy (started in 1980),
• 26th year of the Junior Tour (1997)
• 20th year of the Pee Wee Tour (2003)
• 16th year of GIVE (2007) – PGA HOPE is modeled after this Iowa PGA Successful Program
• 12th year of Swings with Kids (2011)
These facilities also host events for our Allied Associations events:
• Iowa Golf Association Championships and Play Days
• Iowa Chapter – Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (CGSAA) – multiple Field Days, Regional Education and ITI Fundraiser
• Tall Corn Chapter – Club Managers Association of America (CMAA) – fundraisers and education
As we plan for 2024, we will continue to thank all these facilities that assist in growing the great game of golf.
Thank You,
Erin Strieck, PGA President of the Iowa PGA and Iowa PGA FoundationThe Iowa PGA Junior Tour consists of single and multi-day events. Juniors will either play 9 or 18 holes on a tournament day. Some events will be played over two days. Players should be able to walk and carry their clubs for eighteen holes. Players should also be able to keep score and keep pace with the rest of the players. Events will be categorized into 4 different point levels: Major, Ace, Eagle or Birdie. The point level of the event will determine the amount of Player of the Year points awarded.
The Iowa PGA Pee Wee Tour will be celebrating 21 years in 2024! This developmental tour is exclusively designed for juniors, both boys and girls, that want to start experiencing tournament play. Your Pee Wee junior golfer will have fun interacting with his or her peers as well as enjoying time spent with parents! Parents are encouraged to caddie, help keep score, give advice and help with rules & etiquette. The courses may be modified in length and number of holes to cater to the beginner level Pee Wees.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share some thoughts about golf and what has been happening at the PGA of America over this past year. Golf continues to grow and new players are entering the game at every type of golf facility. Whether it is on green grass or off course….it’s a great time to start learning the game. This past year was the first time more players participated in off course golf activities compared to on course so it is going to be the job of the PGA Professional to retain them and get them out for 9 holes on the course.
We had another great championship season and very proud of how our tournament department runs the championships. The PGA Championship was held at Oak Hill in Rochester, NY and was won by Brooks Koepka. The highlight of the tournament was the finish of one of our PGA Professionals that was in the field. Michael Block had a dream week with a hole in one in the final round to finish 15th and qualify for the championship in 2024. The Senior PGA Championship was the following week and was held at PGA Frisco in Frisco, Texas. This was the first event ever held at the new property which we also call the home of the PGA of America. The tournament was held on the newly designed Gil Hanse East course and was won by Steve Sticker. Next up was the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship which was held at famous Baltusrol Golf Club and this event was won by Ruoning Yin as she rolled in a 15-footer for one last circle on her scorecard to claim the championship by one shot. The last big event of the season is the Ryder Cup which will be held in Rome, Italy at the end of September. As I write this article we are about two weeks out from the event and I am looking forward to attending and cheering on the American team. Marco Simone Golf and Country Club is a stadium golf course situated just half an hour’s driver from the heart of Rome. The United States leads the series 27 wins to 14 wins for Europe and we are looking forward to retaining the cup on European soil. I hope you have a chance to tune into this world wide watched event and support your Iowa native captain Zach Johnson!
This will be my last article since my term as a National Board Member is coming to a close this November. It has been the highlight of my career to be able to represent all the PGA Professionals from Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska and look forward to handing over the responsibility to Joel Burger, PGA from the Minnesota section. The past 4 years have gone very fast and wanted to share some final thoughts with you that have defined my tenure on the National Board. My first year was 2020 so the immediate challenge was trying to navigate a pandemic and keep golf open across our country.
I was so proud to see all the governing bodies of golf come together and have the PGA Professional be the leader in keeping the courses open and letting everyone enjoy spending time with their family and friends. We all know that this led to a boom in golf so we needed to make sure our PGA Professionals had quality staff to help them take care of their customers. We moved into recruitment mode and developed new ways of how to share our story and how it is a great time to be in the golf business. We currently have almost 5,000 men and women from diverse backgrounds who are working their way towards PGA membership which is the highest number in the past 10 years. There was a lot of time spent in the middle of my term watching the new home of the PGA down in Frisco, Texas come out of the ground and open to the world. Many decisions had to be made so that this property could be the new Silicon Valley of golf for many years into the future. The partnership with Omni Resorts and the city of Frisco was key to seeing this property get to the finish line. Our new home building opened in August of 2022 on the property and it has been well received by the community. A great place to learn more about what the PGA Professional does and also educate our future members. Please look into planning a golf trip with your friends to visit this world class property in the near future! This past year there has been a division in the professional game with the start up of the new LIV tour and how that affected the PGA Tour. We hope the two sides can come to an agreement for what is best for the players and the game. There has been confusion in the
public that our association is part of the PGA Tour which is not the case. We are in the process of creating a campaign to tell our story and how the 29,000 men and women of the PGA of America are the backbone of our sport. We are the world’s best players and most highly skilled coaches. We are the experts in golf operations, and we run some of the best facilities and golf businesses on the planet. We are, and have always been, the most relevant organization for the golfer in all of us. Our real value focuses on our role in influencing the future of our game and shaping the experience to ensure people everywhere can love the game…their way for a lifetime. In short, the PGA of America is golf….We love this game!
Thank you for playing the game and supporting your local PGA Professional. We are here to help you enjoy the game and be a friend in this great sport. If you are considering entering the golf business or making it a second career, please reach to us to find out more information on how to get started. Fall is a great time to keep playing golf so enjoy all that the Midwest courses have to offer and go USA!

Recently I was introduced to the game of cricket. Sure, I had heard of cricket and had an idea of how it was played…you hit a ball with a bat similar to baseball but I had never watched a game or understood how to play. Now that I think of it, I basically knew very little about cricket. But after watching a game and having the game explained to me by my British friend (he says he’s English), I really enjoyed it. It’s a bit slow and take a long time to complete but enjoyable nonetheless. So now I have watched several matches or “tests” as they are sometimes referred to. I even began rooting for England to win the Ashes, a biannual match between England and Australia. It was enjoyable to discover a new sport and actually understand it.
So why am I writing about cricket? Well, as I was watching the match, I soon noticed the grass being played on, the beautifully striped field and the worn areas between the wickets. I thought about the men and women that tend to the field that spend countless hours creating a safe, playable surface for this game.
At about this same time The Open was taking place in Liverpool, England and the Women’s World Cup was being played in New Zealand and Australia. Again, all beautifully manicured green spaces, all due to the men and women who spend countless hours providing safe and enjoyable playing surfaces.
On September 12 of this year, GCSAA celebrated “Thank a Superintendent Day”. A day to recognize those who are essential to golf’s success. While appropriate every year, even more so this year with the challenges faced by Iowa superintendents; high temps, drought conditions, increase demand and number of rounds. Nonetheless, the golf course superintendents in Iowa and across the world continue to work hard providing exceptional golf courses and in turn an improved quality of life for so many. So, here’s to the golf course superintendents! Thanks! And know that you make a difference!
On behalf of the entire Iowa Golf Association and IGA Foundation, I want to express our sincerest gratitude and appreciation for the astonishing gift made by the Iowa Section PGA to the Golf House Iowa project.
We are absolutely thrilled to have the Iowa Section believe in and support this project in such an amazing way. That not only goes for the Section as an organization but also the dozens of individual PGA members who have made significant contributions of their own. It’s very true to say we would not have been able to get this done without your assistance. Thank you so very much.
I’ve been with the IGA for over two decades now, so I was present during the years when the relationship between our two organizations was not the best (to put it mildly). So, to receive support from the Iowa Section PGA in the way that we did for this project goes beyond just the monetary aspect. It shows how far the two organizations have come since those times. We are working together more than we ever have since I’ve been around – from the Iowa Golf Council work, to helping each other with events, to general conversations that happen more than ever between our two staffs. We collaborate more and more and that makes me very proud.
We are extremely lucky to have so many individuals and organizations who believe in the impact Golf House Iowa will have. We look forward to highlighting all of the wonderful individuals who have earned a place in the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame, including many PGA professionals, as well as bringing the game to new players through the First Tee and Youth on Course programming.
Construction is well underway - if you get a chance, swing by and check it out. We are currently on schedule. The building is nearly enclosed (and should be by the time you are reading this) and the parking lot and landscaping work should be completed by the time the snow flies. Then, work will commence on the interior finishings. If all goes according to plan, we will be open for all to come and view sometime next spring.
We are hopeful that the PGA Section will host meetings and special events at Golf House. We want you to take us up on that offer multiple times over. We want this building to serve the entire golf community here in Iowa!
As we all move into the less busy, fall golf season, I want to wish you all the best as you finish your year and we move toward the holidays. We here at the IGA and IGA Foundation have a lot to be thankful for, including your astounding gift. We promise we will make the absolute most of it. We look forward to making all of our donors proud of the finished facility. I will continue to keep everyone informed of our progress as we move forward.
Sincerely,

My name is Ian Brandt and I am from Okoboji Iowa. I graduated from Spirit Lake High School in 2019 and have been at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln ever since. I am currently a senior in the Professional Golf Management program and have loved my experience here! Along with traditional class time we also are required to complete 16 months of internships at places of our choosing. I have completed 22 months of internship at the following locations: Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, GA, Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, OH, Round Hill Club in Greenwich, CT, Meadow Club in Fairfax, CA, and Huntingdon Valley Country Club in Philadelphia, PA. These internships have been the highlight and most eye opening experience here at the University of Nebraska, being able to see the country as I have at such a young age and learning first hand from the best in the industry has launched me ahead of other candidates and provided me with needed experience as I enter the workforce. I am weighing my choices for positions following my graduation in May of 2024 and can’t wait to get to work!
My name is Jackson Hamlin and I am from Clear Lake, IA. I graduated from Clear Lake High School in 2018, and after that, I decided to continue my competitive golfing career and went to North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, IA. After competing for two years at the collegiate level, I went on to enroll in the PGA Golf Management Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. As a student in the PGM program, we get the opportunity to travel around the world to complete 16 months of internship. During my time here, I have completed internships at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, NY, Plainfield Country Club in Edison, NJ, and Jim McLean Golf Schools in Coral Gables, FL. My time on internship has been unforgettable, but the highlight of the program has been the people I have been able to meet. The relationships I have created through the program at Nebraska are relationships I will never take for granted and will cherish for life. This program has given me best friends for life, and lifelong mentors I will always look up to. As for my future in the industry, I hope to continue teaching the game of golf with hopes of becoming a collegiate golf coach in the future.
My name is Seth Sheriff and I am from Corydon, Iowa. I am currently a senior transfer student in the Professional Golf Management Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Following high school graduation in 2019, I completed my Associate of Arts and Sciences degree from Indian Hills Community College where a large part of my time was spent focusing on sports turf classes, assisting with daily maintenance of the sports facilities at the college, while also being a part of the golf team there. Although my game did not match what was needed to start, my passion for the game grew exponentially and I discovered that I wanted to pursue a career in the golf industry which is what ultimately led me to Nebraska in the fall of 2020. While enrolled in the program, I have completed 12.5 of the 16 total months of internship required to graduate. These months have been spent at the following locations: Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, IN, Union League Liberty Hill in Philadelphia, PA, and Des Moines Golf & Country Club in West Des Moines, IA and I am currently wrapping up my final months of internship at Wilderness Ridge Country Club in Lincoln, NE. These experiences
at such different facilities across the country have provided me with the opportunity to gain mentorship from some of the most well-respected Professionals in the industry, which I feel has been the most beneficial part of my time being enrolled in the program. Upon completion of Level 3 of the PGA Golf Management University Program, I have the privilege of joining the staff at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, KY which will be hosting the 2024 PGA Championship, and I am excited to begin my new journey!

The Swings with Kids program is a golf instruction program within school districts which reside within the state or Iowa and/or Iowa PGA Section boundaries. The Swings with Kids program will introduce the game of golf with the direction of Iowa PGA Professionals inside physical education classes. Students will learn about golf and also benefit from the numerous life skills that the game of golf offers
The vision for the Iowa PGA Foundation Swings with Kids program is “Helping kids excel by introducing them to the life skills that the game of golf provides.” These life skills include character, honesty, integrity, respect, perseverance and cooperation. Our golf is simply for children to “try golf”
One of the primary reasons the Iowa PGA Foundation chose the Tri-Golf and Golf Xtreme equipment is that it is high-quality equipment and curriculum at an affordable price. Since PE classes share equipment, each school generally only needs 1 bag. Many school districts do not have enough of a PE budget to purchase the equipment for their schools Iowa PGA Professionals are working within their communities to raise funds for the Swings with Kids program The school districts that do not have a local PGA Professional, however, need your help The Iowa PGA Foundation does not want a lack of funding to be the reason why golf cannot be a part of your PE curriculum. What you can do?:
Sponsor a school – $700 for an Elementary (TriGolf) and $1,250 for a Junior High (Golf Xtreme)
Donate to your District – Funds will be earmarked for the area that you choose
Give to the General Fund – Funds will be designated for the Swings with Kids program, helping to support unsponsored schools

Exposing more children to golf in a fun environment will hopefully encourage their continued play throughout life.
This is a great way to strengthen golf in your school district!
