As our Tournament Season came to a close on Saturday, October 8th as we administered the final round of the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s State 4A Boys State Championship at Elmcrest CC, I took a moment to take a breath and think what a nice year we had.

Then I remembered the year isn’t over for some of our professionals as we have six of our Senior (50+) playing in the Se nior PGA Professional Championship at Twin Warriors & Santa Ana Golf Clubs in Santa Ana, NM on October 13-16, 2022. The low 35 Professionals get to qualify and play in the 2023 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship on May 24-28, 2023, at our new PGA of America Headquarters in Frisco, TX. We have had Judd Gibb, Jeff Schmid and Chad Proehl play in the KitchenAid in the past few years. I am hopefully we get a few into that event again as we have some pretty good golfers in the state of Iowa, both Amateurs and Professionals.

We have two of our young Associate/Assistant Professionals playing in the Assistants National Championship in Port St Lucie, FL on November 17-20, 2022. Good luck to Zach Steffen and Matt Jennings.

All of our Associations are moving towards our Annual Awards season. The Iowa Golf Association will name its winners and celebrate them on December 16th at Terrace Hills in Altoona, IA. From their Players of the Year to their awarding of the Golf Courses of the Year, Superintendent and Golf Professional of the Years will be honored along with some other very deserving award winners. The Iowa Chapter of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America will host their awards for 2022 in 2023 on February 16 at their annual meeting. The Iowa PGA will award their Section Awards along with their Player’s of the Year for the Professionals and our Junior Tour (just completed its 25th year) at Riverside Casino and Golf Resort on November 15, 2022.

As the final tournaments are played and the awards handed out for 2022, the Iowa PGA has already begun planning for 2023 and another great slate of educational opportunities, tournament opportunities for our Professionals and our Junior Tour Players and whatever we think of as we do some wonderful planning. Our Iowa PGA Board, Iowa PGA Foun dation Board and our Past Presidents will be doing another Strategic Plan for our next 3-5 years to help guide us towards bigger and better things.

Thanks to all of you that have volunteered, were a spectator or participated in any of our educational or playing opportu nities.

As an old friend, Dr. Hooshang Soltenzadeh, used to say, “I am sad that this year is over, but really happy that we get to meet/play again next year”.

For those interested in marketing with us, we will have spots available for you to place an ad. Just look for our special marketing page within the pages of our magazine. This digital magazine goes to over 15,000 people on our email list along with being sent over our social media channels. Hello Iowa Golfing Community,

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share some thoughts about golf and what has been happening at the PGA of America over this past golf season. Golf continues to grow in many areas of the country as we continue to draft off the 2020 pandemic season. The weather did not start off the greatest this past Spring but since early June rounds are outpacing even the 2020 season. Rounds are up 61 million since 2019 – +20% at private clubs and +12% at public facilities.

I’m proud to be a PGA Professional during this growing time of golf and we are hard at work running first class cham pionship events and player development programs. The PGA Championship was held at Southern Hills CC in Tulsa, OK this past May and the event was full of spectators during the entire week. Justin Thomas was a popular winner and is the son of a PGA Professional so to see them hoist the trophy on the 18th green was special. We were also proud to see our 20 PGA Professionals from around the country compete that week and drive awareness of our PGA led programs through the media.

We continue to be a leader at the epicenter of driving the future and growth of the game through our PGA Reach Foundation programming. Two programs that continue to grow and change lives are the PGA Junior League and PGA Hope player development initiatives. Junior League is a golf team format for kids 17 and under that gives them a chance to compete in a fun team format through the Summer. We are on track to have almost 70,000 kids from across the country be part of the leagues with the National championship being held down in Arizona. The other program that is really changing lives through golf is our PGA Hope program with stands for Helping Our Patriots Everywhere. Many PGA professionals from around the country are giving clinics for our veterans and getting them out on the golf course. We will have almost 7,000 veterans participate in the clinics in 215 different locations.

This past month we opened the doors to our new National headquarters down in Frisco, TX. This will be the new home of golf for our 28,000 PGA Professionals and is truly a transformational property located in the middle of the country. PGA Frisco is a public/private partnership between the PGA of America, Omni Hotels and Resort and the city of Frisco. The 660-acre campus is a unique destination that includes: Fields Ranch at PGA Frisco, with two world-class 18-hole championship golf courses, a lighted 10-hole short course, a lighted 2-acre putting course and a clubhouse. The Omni PGA Frisco Resort which will consist of 500 guest rooms and the PGA District which will feature an expansive retail and entertainment district, including an outdoor area for concerts and events. The entire property is slated to home early Spring of 2023, and we will be hosting our first championship in May which will be the Senior PGA Championship. We hope you will plan to take a trip down to this new golf destination in 2023!

Thank you for playing the game and supporting your local PGA Professional. We are here to help you enjoy the game and make it a lifetime sport. If you are considering entering the golf business or making it a second career, please reach out to us to find out more information and how to get started. I hope can get some rounds in this Fall and continue to enjoy this great game.

Sincerely,

Iowa Golf House

August 23, 2022

Iowa is the home of global golf champions and captains. Titles brought home by Iowans include the Masters, (British) Open Cham pionship, U.S. Open, U.S. Mid-Amateur, U.S. Senior Amateur and many other significant global events. Iowa can simultaneously claim the most 9-hole courses in the U.S. as well as being home to the captains of next year’s Ryder Cup team and Walker Cup teams.

What we lack is our own centralized place to organize, support, and celebrate the excellence that is Iowa Golf. The Iowa Golf Associa tion Foundation - led by lead donor Michael Coppola - has been working quietly over the past 9 months to rectify that.

“I must do everything I can, financially and otherwise, to make this happen,” said Coppola, a Des Moines real estate developer and owner of Echo Valley Country Club in Norwalk.

Fundraising is under way for Golf House Iowa, a building that will be home to the Iowa Golf Association and all its programs, as well as the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame. The building will be owned by the Iowa Golf Association Foundation, the IGA’s 501(c)(3).

Coppola has donated $1 million to the project. Golf House Iowa will be built on land that Coppola has also donated, overlooking the 9th green of Echo Valley’s Creek Course.

Coppola’s generous gift is a major piece of the fundraising goal, which was recently raised to $5 million due to increased construction costs. Well over half of that total has been raised so far.

“We want to inspire others to get involved,” said Coppola, who is helping lead the fundraising initiative. “We’re attempting to build a platform that I believe is going to take Iowa golf, and more importantly, the programs to the next level.”

Chad Pitts, executive director of the Iowa Golf Association, said that Golf House Iowa is important for many reasons.

“It’s operationally and philosophically strategic for the IGA and our Foundation to have a permanent home,” Pitts said. “But we’re really doing this for our community of Iowa golfers. Golf in Iowa and around the world has been experiencing positive growth and we need to create a space that supports both current and future participation. Golf positively impacts quality of life, education, and economic development and that’s good for everyone in the state.”

Golf House Iowa would be much more than just offices. It will also include a golf simulator, indoor and outdoor putting greens and multipurpose meeting rooms that would be used by grow the game initiatives like First Tee and Youth on Course.

The Iowa Golf Course Superintendents Association will also have offices in the building. So will the IGA Foundation, which promotes golf and preserves history through many programs including the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame, the Herman Sani and Ann Griffel Scholar ships and the Youth on Course program. The Sani and Griffel scholarships award $42,000 annually.

The new facility would house the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame and Museum, which will celebrate the game’s past and serve as motiva tion for the future. In addition to Coppola’s gift, the early contributions of some Hall of Fame members have really jump started this project.

“The family of the late Joe Brown, Mike McCoy, Gene Elliott , Jim Carney, and many others made significant gifts early on,” Pitts said. “Without their financial support and participation, we would not be where we are today. It’s a testament to their appreciation for the game of golf that they would step up and contribute in the fashion that they did.”

Iowa Golf House 12 Iowa PGA Golf Magazine - October Issue

Pitts said that the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame would give its members a place where their collective legacies would be honored in permanent fashion.

Golf is the game of a lifetime. And those donating to Golf House Iowa would be helping set the table for future generations to appreciate Iowa’s rich golf history and enjoy the game for years to come.

Why is Golf House Iowa so important?

“With every mission, and every business, you need a platform,” Cop pola said. “And for the IGA, Golf House Iowa will be the platform for everything it does.”

This is not the first time the future of the game has prospered from Coppola’s generosity. The Sani Scholarship fund, which is financed by donations and a percentage of entry fees from selected statewide tournaments, was struggling to find enough money to endow those scholarships.

Coppola was approached around 2013 about making a donation to keep the scholarships - $2,000 a year for four years - up and run ning. Coppola attended a Sani Scholarship dinner, and was deeply impressed with the award winners. He did some research on Sani, who purchased Hyperion Field Club in 1936 for back taxes and gave it back to the membership. Sani was also the first executive director of the IGA and served in that role on a volunteer basis for more than 30 years.

“I thought, “Man, this is a great story,’ ” Coppola recalled. “I talked to my brothers (Arthur and Edward) and we decided to do it. The kids were inspirational. And the Sani story just took me over the edge. I said, “It’s perfect, we’ll do it.’ ”

The Coppola brothers donated $250,000 to help endow the Sani Scholarship in 2015.

“Sometimes you know it’s something you’ve got to do, and sometimes you’re not sure,” Michael said. “Well, I knew it was something we need ed to do.”

Witnessing the Sani Scholarship winners in person, and hearing their stories, was the driving force behind Coppola’s decision to lend a help ing hand.

“What inspired me to get involved wasn’t just the IGA,” Coppola said. “It was more about seeing the great work that was being done through the scholarship fund the IGA administers and being in the room when those kids received their awards. It was easy to see that somebody was doing something right. And when I gave the money to the scholarship I had zero concern whether or not my money would be spent wise ly. Because I could see the results right in front of my eyes. That’s where I wanted my money to go.”

Golf House Iowa has been talked about for years, and often greeted by detours like the recession in 2008 and COVID-19 in 2020.

“We went down many paths the last several years, and the deal didn’t get the inertia it needed,” Coppola said. “The lights were on, but no one was moving the needle.” Initially, Coppola offered land for the project. Then he added a $500,000 dona tion.“I said, “Now let’s raise some cash. I’ll help.’ ”

Coppola has since doubled his contribution to $1 million, and volunteered his time to help raise the remaining money.

Golf House Iowa’s doors will be open to everyone, with a mis sion of growing the game of golf.

“The union of Golf House Iowa and Echo Valley made perfect sense to me,” Coppola said. “This must happen.”

The Sani and Griffel scholarship winners also motivate Coppola to help make Golf House Iowa a reality.

“The level of excellence they have is inspirational,” Coppola said. “That’s why I’m here. And they’re inspirational for those who aspire to be just like them. This platform (Golf House Iowa) is going to celebrate those past, present and future participants in this game. It isn’t just a game. It’s more about your life. It’s a way to enrich your life.”

Coppola looks into the future and sees a day when McCoy, one of Iowa’s greatest amateur players, sits in a meeting room at Golf House Iowa and talks to a group of youngsters about what the game of golf has done for him.

“It’s about enriching lives through golf,” Coppola said. “How do we change a life through the game? And it might not even be on a golf course. Twenty-five years later, a kid is going to say, “Mr. McCoy talked to me about what the game did for him. And one thing he said really got to me.’ ”

As a golfer Coppola isn’t motivated by how many rounds he

13www.iowapga.com Iowa Golf House

plays in a year. It’s more about the canvas that golf provides.

“When you walk among golfers you can see what it does for them,” he said.

“It’s about how many times I touch certain moments out there. Different things happen that allow me to learn, to create, to do all the things that are fun to me. It’s about seeing something in a richer perspective than what it currently is. How would a kid learn some thing they wouldn’t potentially learn? That’s what you can do for a kid. That inspires me.” Coppola sees Golf House Iowa as a way for the Iowa Golf Association to grow and expand its programs.

‘“If you watch them up close and personal, you can see they do some really good work here and they don’t blow their horn,” Coppola said. “I want them to blow their horn. I want more kids to know there is a path through this game. And Golf House Iowa is going to be the sanctuary.”

The bottom line for Coppola is this: Golf House Iowa is a perfect way to grow the game for the future, a legacy that will continue to give for generations. Youth will be served. “You can see that they make me feel good about writing a check,” Coppola said. “ Not the bricks and mortar.”

Message From the Iowa Turfgrass Institute

Golf Courses: Used for More Than Golfing

I am going into my 6th year as the cross country coach for Greene County High School. It’s a long sto ry how I got into running and then coaching. I soon realized that many of the meets on our schedule were run on golf courses. In fact, eight of the ten regular season meets on our schedule this year will be run at golf courses. Most likely the state qualifying meet for our class and region will be at a golf course. The state cross country meet for both boys and girls has been held at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge since 1993.

So why do golf courses allow hundreds of athletes to run on their finely groomed courses? I’m not sure I know the an swer to this. This question might be better answered by one of our golf course superintendents. I can only speculate.

• Many courses have agreements with school districts, allowing the school’s golf team to play the course, thus introducing the sport, and the course, to the next generation of players - a bene fit to the course I would imagine. Scheduling a cross country meet could be added to this agreement.

• The long fairways and open spaces of the golf course would accom modate the length needed (3.1 miles) for a varsity cross country meet.

• The course would also have the amenities needed to host a meet: parking, restrooms, etc.

• In Iowa, cross country is run in the Fall as the golf season starts to wind down. I’m sure the cross coun try meets interfere with some golfer’s regular games but typically the courses are not as busy.

• And finally, cross country meets introduce the golf course to those who may not typical ly visit the course otherwise. It’s an opportunity to showcase the beauty of the course.

September 13th was designated “Thank a Super Day”. A day designated to recognize the hard work and dedica tion of our many golf course superintendents. Many hours are spent preparing the golf courses for the many rounds played on them and sometimes activities, such as cross country meets, that add to the wear and tear of the course.

Whatever the reason for allowing hundreds of high school and middle school runners to stampede the many golf courses of Iowa, as a coach, and on behalf of the running community, we appreci ate the golf course superintendents and their willingness to share their courses with the running community!

INTERNSHIPS

An extremely important part of the educational experience involves our internship program. Every student will spend 16 months on paid internships gaining valuable hands-on experi ence in the golf industry. Our internship coordinator works with each student to tailor a set of experiences that complement the classroom education we provide. We have students interning from coast to coast, as well as internationally. your unique goals.

Content within the PGA specific curriculum is divided into four distinct levels, with each building on the previous. The Quali fying Level provides some base knowledge in three key areas specific to the golf industry: Interpersonal Skills, Business Skills and Golf Instruction Skills. In Level 2, students will apply knowl edge gained in Level 1 in a “hands-on” environment. Level 3 ties the three key areas together into one cohesive package.

STUDY ABROAD

Students have the opportunity to participate in short-term study abroad programs to Scotland and China, golf’s oldest and newest countries. Students earn credit and have access to generous study abroad scholarships!

Students can also participate in domestic study tours to see various aspects of the golf industry. This last season PGA stu dents paired with turf students on a trip to Kansas City to see how vital the relationship is between the PGA Professional and GCSAA Superintendent at high performing facilities.

FACILITIES

On and off campus our students are provided with the best in golf to learn and improve their golf game. Our state-of-the-art laborato ry facilities are a complete, diverse collection of technology to study and improve golf swing and ball flight, including three simulator spaces with over 300 courses in total. We have the only swing lab featuring a High-Speed Phantom Camera system and are the only program to feature all three of the major launch monitor systems on the market: TrackMan, Flight Scope, and the Foresight GC Quad.

Off campus students have access to nine partner golf courses including our home course Wilderness Ridge Country Club which hosts such events as the NAIA National Championship, Stage 1 of Korn Ferry Tour Q-School and other national events. SWINGS WITH KIDS

The Swings with Kids program is a golf instruction program within school districts which reside within the state or Iowa and/or Iowa PGA Section boundaries. The Swings with Kids program will introduce the game of golf with the direction of Iowa PGA Professionals inside physical education classes. Students will learn about golf and also benefit from the numerous life skills that the game of golf offers

The vision for the Iowa PGA Foundation Swings with Kids program is “Helping kids excel by introducing them to the life skills that the game of golf provides.” These life skills include character, honesty, integrity, respect, perseverance and cooperation. Our golf is simply for children to “try golf”

One of the primary reasons the Iowa PGA Foundation chose the Tri Golf and Golf Xtreme equipment is that it is high quality equipment and curriculum at an affordable price. Since PE classes share equipment, each school generally only needs 1 bag. Many school districts do not have enough of a PE budget to purchase the equipment for their schools Iowa PGA Professionals are working within their communities to raise funds for the Swings with Kids program The school districts that do not have a local PGA Professional, however, need your help The Iowa PGA Foundation does not want a lack of funding to be the reason why golf cannot be a part of your PE curriculum. What you can do?:

Sponsor a school $700 for an Elementary (Tri Golf) and $1,250 for a Junior High (Golf Xtreme)

Donate to your District Funds will be earmarked for the area that you choose

Give to the General Fund Funds will be designated for the Swings with Kids program, helping to support unsponsored schools

Iowa PGA Foundation

Swings with Kids Program

How Does the Swings with Kids Program Work?

Our goal is to have PGA Professionals partner with school districts to raise funds for the equipment. The equipment is specially designed for safe, indoor and outdoor use and comes with complete curriculum and activities, allowing PE teachers to easily implement the pro gram in their classes. Exposing more children to golf in a fun environment will hopefully encourage their continued play throughout life. This is a great way to strengthen golf in your school district!

Charlie Burkart Scholarship

The Iowa PGA Foundation annually awards a college scholarship in memory of Charlie Burkart, PGA member for 49 years and head professional at Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids for 42 years. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist students with their education. The scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who will continue contributing to the game of golf.
