A Message From the Iowa PGA

The Iowa PGA has started its 2024 Monday Professional events on of all day’s April 1st. Yep, we aren’t fooling as we had thirty-two of our golf loving PGA Professionals and Associates tee it up at Oakwood Country Club in not ideal weather. This is fitting with the PGA of America’s new tag line – “We Love This Game” …because we truly do. Monday showed it. If our professionals weren’t playing in the event, they were probably back at their facility checking in the hearty golfers of Iowa so that THEY could play some golf.

The PGA of America created a new logo and new tag line in 2024. They debuted the new logo and tagline at the Ryder Cup last Fall. This also means that the Iowa PGA will be changing its logo as well – “New Logo. Same Section. Same Mission.”

Here is the good news, at our core, we aren’t changing what we do – administer professional golf events, administer junior golf experiences (via our Junior Tour, Pee Wee Tour, Junior Academy, DCP, PGA Jr League), Scholarships, Veteran Programming (GIVE), Swings with Kids (Golf In Schools) and a myriad of other related items to our Mission, Vision and Values of the Iowa PGA.

That is the same thing that one of the smaller Sections has done since we were formed in 1936. Our past leaders have always tried to grow the game of golf and enhance the PGA Members lives. They did much of this because, like Mid-westerners do, it was for the right reasons.

In 1980, the Officers and Board decided to start a Junior Golf Academy at Pheasant Ridge in Cedar Falls. I am happy to say that in 2024, that academy is still going strong and will host over 40 junior golfers at a 5-day/4-night golf camp with Iowa PGA Professionals providing instruction and led by PGA Professional John Bermel. Much of this same leadership felt in the mid to late 1990’s to start a Junior Tour in Iowa and Western Illinois and to start a program in 1999 that we called “Drive, Chip & Putt (DCP)”. We are pleased to say that the Junior Tour is stronger than ever and DCP was adopted by Augusta, the USGA and the PGA of America and is now run nationwide. You will see other programming throughout this magazine, but we wanted to THANK ALL OF YOU for supporting golf in Iowa and Western Illinois. Because of that support – the Iowa PGA has won the 2024 PGA of America’s Herb Graffis Award. That is why we still say - “New Logo. Same Section. Same Mission.” and the PGA says “We Love This Game”.

We want to also congratulate our fellow Associations on the opening of Golf House Iowa. This will showcase a bunch of wonderful things about golf in Iowa. The Museum and all of our great. rich golf history. The Iowa Golf Hall of Fame shows how many great and talented players and ambassadors of the game of golf have passed through Iowa. I would encourage you to take a trip to Golf House Iowa to view this new “HOUSE”.

For those interested in marketing with us, we will have spots available for you to place an ad. Just look for our special marketing page within the pages of our magazine. This digital magazine goes to over 15,000 people on our email list along with being sent over our social media channels. If you wish to be a part of something new in the Iowa Golf scene, please feel free to email me at gmason@pgahq.com. You can always call the office at 319-648-0026 as well.

Have fun, Play Well “Mase”

The official golf season is finally here. I don’t know about you, but I feel like we have been playing golf for months! Yeah, to the longest golf season ever!

By now, I hope you have heard about the amazing award the Iowa Section won, the Herb Graffis award. The Herb Graffis award is given annually to one of the 41 PGA of America Sections that has shown tireless dedication to growing the game of golf and furthering player-development programming in the community. Why did we win this prestigious award, you ask?

The Section has implemented many programs with a focus on youth, including Swing with Kids Golf in Schools, in which a PGA of America Golf Professional adopts a local School District and supports the Physical Education Teachers in elementary and middle schools to teach golf and life skills. The program has more than doubled in size over the past five years and now serves over 25,000 students. Iowa’s PGA Jr. League program is the number-one program by growth percentage across all PGA of America Sections in number of players as well as teams.

The Iowa PGA Section is also supporting local military Veterans with their GIVE (Golf for Injured Veterans Everywhere) program, where PGA of America Professionals teach the game of golf to Veterans as part of their rehabilitation. The program has supported more than 2,300 Veterans since its inception.

Iowa PGA Junior Tour events were hosted by 67 percent of the facilities within the Section in 2023. Additionally, the Iowa PGA has remained number one across all Sections on the percentage of membership for PGA of America Golf professionals certified through ADM and PGA.coach, completing training and certification in 2023.

WE ARE AMAZING! This award is for past, present and future Iowa PGA Section members. We are not who we are today without those who have paved our way.

We are going to celebrate all year! Each Tuesday through September we will have a video on the Iowa PGA website and social media channels from one of our Iowa PGA Professionals talking about the Iowa PGA, what programs we do, and what the award means to them. We will also get to receive this award at the PGA of America Annual Meeting in Grand Rapids Michigan on November 6th in front of the delegation.

I hope everyone has a great spring and don’t forget to play golf!

Thank you

2024 Iowa Golf Hall of Fame Class

of his college career by winning the NCAA Division I Individual title in 1985 and was named 1st team All-American.

Waterloo’s Clark Burroughs has a playing resume that ranks at the top with all from Iowa.

Growing up and developing his game in golf-rich Waterloo, Burroughs (pictured right) was successful in various local competitions in an era where there wasn’t first-rate junior competitions available like there are today. Clark’s success included a victory at the 1980 Iowa Junior Amateur.

Those ‘early’ victories were just the start for Burroughs, a fixture at the Byrnes Park (now Irv Warren) golf course who was a star at Waterloo West High School under Iowa Golf Hall of Fame member Don Narveson.

“He literally lived here while he was a kid,” Narveson once said. “He’s a winner.”

Burroughs attended Ohio State University on a golf scholarship and put together an incredible college career. He was a First-team All-Big Ten selection all four years, from 1982 through 1985. He was also Big Ten Player of the Year in 1985, and won seven individual titles. Clark was named team captain for the Buckeyes in 1984 and 1985 and was inducted into the Ohio State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997.

Burroughs had considerable success in big time amateur golf outside of college as well. He was medalist in the 1983 U.S. Amateur and made it to the semifinals, earning him a trip to the 1984 Masters Tournament and a spot on the 1985 Walker Cup Team.

“He’s our kid,” Narveson after watching Burroughs make the cut at the 1984 Masters.

Burroughs turned professional after college and returned home to win the Waterloo Open in 1987. He competed on the PGA Tour for a span of 11 years. During that time, he played in 130 tournaments and made 60 cuts.

“Winning the NCAA and playing on the tour are totally different,” Burroughs said in 1989. “These guys don’t care what you did in college.”

Clark finished in the Top 21 four times during his PGA Tour career. His highest was a runner-up finish to Steve Jones at the 1989 Canadian Open.

“One of the qualities I admired most about Clark was his self-confidence and belief in himself,” Iowa Golf Hall of Fame member Doug Dunakey said. “I have to admit, Clark pushed me to be a better player. His play and accomplishments were standards I measured myself against.”

Burroughs was named an All-American all four years at Ohio State. He capped Iowa PGA Golf Magazine - Spring Issue

Michael Coppola’s passion for the game of golf in the state of Iowa is unmatched.

Coppola, pictured with Golf House Iowa donor, Doug Reichardt (on right with hat), the owner of Echo Valley Country Club in Norwalk, was a major player in the construction of Golf House Iowa, which is nearing completion. As Coppola’s friend, Charlie Taylor, describes it, Coppola didn’t move the needle for the project. He was the needle.

Coppola’s lead gift, including the land the building rests on just east of the ninth green of Echo Valley’s Creek Course, was crucial. Just as important is his behind-the-scenes role and volunteering his time to help the project move forward. His experience and insight during the fundraising, planning and construction of the project were invaluable.

Coppola’s generous gifts were a major piece of the fundraising goal, which climbed to $5 million due to increased construction costs. The new facility, which will also be home to the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame and Museum, will celebrate the game’s past and serve as motivation for the future. Michael has also been generous with his time and his philanthropic endeavors to help the IGA many times in the past.

“It is nearly impossible to completely and accurately summarize Mike’s

18
- Bios written by Iowa Golf Association Michael Coppola Clark Burroughs

contributions to the Iowa Golf Association,” Taylor said. “He has, in my opinion, single-handedly changed the course of the IGA like no one before him. Mike shares a vision with the IGA that Golf House Iowa will provide an important platform to promote the game of golf through its impact on junior golfers.”

This is not the first time the future of the game has prospered from Coppola’s generosity. The Sani Scholarship Fund, which is financed by donations and a percentage of entry fees from selected statewide tournaments, was struggling to find enough money to endow those scholarships.

Coppola was approached around 2013 about making a donation to keep the scholarships – $2,000 a year for four years – up and running. Coppola attended a Sani Scholarship dinner and was deeply impressed with the award winners. He did some research on Sani, who purchased Hyperion Field Club in 1936 for back taxes and gave it back to the membership. Sani was also the first executive director of the IGA and served in that role on a volunteer basis for more than 30 years.

The Coppola brothers – Michael, Arthur and Edward – donated $250,000 to help endow the Sani Scholarship in 2015. Witnessing the Sani Scholarship winners in person, and hearing their stories, was the driving force behind Coppola’s decision to lend a helping hand.

“Mike’s involvement and philanthropic contributions to the IGA already have, and will continue to shape, the game for players in our great state for years to come,” said former IGA president Steve Jermier, himself a former Sani Scholarship recipient.

Echo Valley Country Club, along with Hyperion Field Club in Johnston, host the Herman Sani Tournament every other year on the IGA Championship schedule, thanks again to the generosity of the Coppola family.

Coppola has also made significant investments to improve playing conditions and overall experience for the members at Echo Valley Country Club. The club grew to 27 holes in 2004

when the nine-hole Ridge course was built. The greens were rebuilt on the Vale course in 2021, returning them to their original size. The Creek nine underwent greenside renovations, movement of some fairway bunkers, the addition of new tees and a new irrigation system in 2022 and 2023. And all bunkers on the three nines have been rebuilt over the last two years with capillary concrete to improve drainage and playing conditions.

Coppola has commented that he looks into the future and sees a day when Mike McCoy, one of Iowa’s greatest amateur players and a member of the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame, sits in a meeting room at Golf House Iowa and talks to a group of youngsters about what the game of golf has done for him.

“It’s about enriching lives through golf,” Coppola said. “How do we change a life through the game? And it might not even be on a golf course. Twenty-five years later a kid is going to say, “Mr. McCoy talked to be about what the game did for him. And one thing he said really got to me.”

As a golfer, Coppola isn’t motivated by how many rounds he plays in a year. It’s more about the canvas that golf provides.

Bill Dickens

He was the right guy at the right time for the Iowa Golf Association. Those words have been mentioned numerous times when describing Bill Dickens.

“He (Bill) faced a hurdle when he first started at the IGA,” IGA Executive Director & CEO Chad Pitts said. “He found he needed to get back to the basics of golf administration, and he had to teach those basics to staff and board members alike. Things as simple as referring to every person on the GHIN roster as a member of the IGA, having full teams to perform course ratings, how to conduct board meetings, how to properly mark a golf course and prepare a rules sheet, or even getting a new thing called a website up and running. Sounds simple now but that was what the IGA wasn’t doing before Bill got there. I think it is fair to say he revamped the way the staff and board thought about the IGA and what it was capable of and there is no doubt that has carried on to today.”

Due to Bill’s tireless efforts, it is accurate to say that many associations around the country look to Iowa as a blueprint for how golf should be administered at the highest level.

“Bill was the driving force behind so many efforts around the IGA and IGAF, it’s difficult to just pick a few to highlight,” Steve Jermier said. “The IGA is known nationally among its peers as a standard bearer for producing an incredible product with limited resources compared to larger state and regional associations. That reputation simply wouldn’t exist without the contributions, leadership, and vision from Bill Dickens.”

In addition to his service to game of golf in Iowa, Bill was awarded the prestigious Ike Grainger Award from the USGA in 2016 recognizing 25 years of service as a USGA Committee Member.

Greg Ladehoff

Greg Ladehoff of Clinton steadily improved as he climbed golf’s ladder, a less-than-guaranteed journey that took him all the way to the PGA Tour.

Following a successful junior career at Clinton High School and as the 1979 Iowa Junior champion, Ladehoff (pictured right) accepted a scholarship to Ohio State University. There, he was one of the few golfers ever to earn All Big-Ten honors four years in a row (1981-84). Ladehoff then decided to try a career playing professionally. He made it through Q-School for the first time in 1985, and also in 1987, 1988 and 1990. Greg played the PGA Tour regularly for eight years (1985-92), making 154 starts. His best career finish was a tie for third with Nick Faldo in the 1986 USF&G Classic as a rookie.

“My attitude is that I want to play good enough get in position where I have a chance to screw up,” Ladehoff said in 1988. “If you never get in that position, you never have a chance.”

After leaving the tour, Ladehoff still played at a high level. He won the Iowa PGA Section Championship in 1994 at Finkbine in Iowa City. But Greg would retire from competitive golf after numerous injuries, and he joined his father in a well-known and respected duck decoy business in the Clinton area.

19 www.iowapga.com

“Ladehoff attacked golf courses over his career, the way he approaches everyday business life of which he is equally successful,” Gary Dolphin said of Ladehoff. “He did it with purpose and a great sense of humor. Whether shooting a course record 68 in the Ohio Amateur at Inverness in Toledo, a 66 that chased down Tommy Armour III in Tallahassee or his present day worldwide success building a duck decoy business, Ladehoff marches and lives with the times.”

Those who knew Ladehoff know there was more to the man than just golf.

“I hope that 100 years from now, when a visitor to the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame is pondering the great Greg Ladehoff, they can see him as I do,” Mark L. Burden said. “A terrific player and competitor, of course, but to see Greg solely through the prism of golf would obscure his towering commitment to family, to friends, to his passion for business and to his love for the Hawkeye State. Golf afforded Greg tremendous opportunities and to his credit, he pursued the game to the pinnacle.”

Bob Smith

Bob Smith dedicated his career to being the best golf course superintendent. He studied and strived to be just that for more than 30 years at seven different Iowa golf courses and communities. He was recognized over the years by the Iowa Golf Course Superintendent Association with many awards and accolades.

Bob (pictured right) served the association at its highest levels, being elected to the Board of Directors in 1953, and served as President in 1956 and 1957. He believed service to the IGCSA was most important and received 25- and 50- year membership pins. In 1990 he had the honor of receiving the Distinguished Service Award from IGCSA.

In addition to his achievements as a golf course superintendent, Bob’s career included being a pioneer on the sales side of turf products. He would go to golf courses, both large and small, offering valuable advice on many aspects of turf maintenance. He helped

with disease and weed identification by offering his expertise on treatment, insect management, grass seed, and irrigation.

“As one of the first golf course superintendents to work in sales, he combined his knowledge and experience,” Iowa Golf Hall of Fame member Doug Snook said. “He was like a doctor making house calls. With education opportunities limited in turf, managers relied on Bob to solve their turf problems. Bob would take the time to walk with the turf managers inspecting their facilities, troubleshooting turf and equipment issues while helping them with their management problems.”

He might even show how to cut a cup properly or help pick flags or markers when needed. At many small golf courses, the turf maintenance employees were seasonal and even part-time visits were much anticipated.

“Bob Smith’s lifework was the betterment of golf through creating well-maintained facilities,” John Hollen said. “He helped players both as a caddy when growing up and by providing golf lessons while working as superintendent, educating turf managers by sharing his knowledge, helping strengthen his association through lifetime involvement, and setting an example so impactful that many of his family followed suit.”

Bob was always experimenting with new golf course management techniques and was a great golfer in his own right, giving golf members golf lessons that did not have a golf professional at their club.

“If a young person could model their career after an old timer, Bob Smith would be someone who I would recommend,” Iowa Golf Hall of Fame member Rick Tegtmeier, CGCS, MG, said. “He worked at many golf courses around the state, he mentored young people and Iowa golf was in his blood.”

The Iowa Golf Hall of Fame is administered by the Iowa Golf Association on behalf of all golf organizations in and around the state, such as the Iowa Section PGA and the Iowa Golf Course Superintendents Association.

The nomination and induction process consists of two committees, the Nominating Committee and the Voting Committee. The Nominating Committee determines the eligibility of nominees submitted by the general public as well as identifies individuals to nominate. They finalize the ballot. The Voting Committee has the task of researching and studying those on the ballot and casting votes for induction. The Voting Committee consists entirely of individuals who are current members of the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame.

2023 looked at the record-breaking year the IGA had in 2022 and said “Hold my Drink”.

The “business” of the IGA has never been stronger. Our membership numbers hit record highs, our championship entries were up once again, and we are about to move into a state-of-the-art facility that will be a platform for some terrific things to come.

We finished the year with just over 27,500 individual members of the IGA. That’s the most we have had since at least 2001. And while we don’t have records of it prior to that, I would venture to say that it was the high-water mark in the history of the 124 year old organization.

For me, 2023 will always be remembered as the year Zach and Mike were captains. Having Mike McCoy lead the U.S. squad to a thrilling comeback victory at the Walker Cup - at the home of golf no less - was extremely gratifying. He put a wealth of time, effort, and resources into captaining that squad so it was neat to see it capped off with a victory at St. Andrews. Then, just a few weeks later, Zach Johnson was leading the U.S. Ryder Cup team at Marco Simone G&CC just outside of Rome, Italy. It’s proving to be extremely difficult to win a Ryder Cup on foreign soil and, unfortunately for our U.S. team, 2023 was no different. But the pride it gave Iowans to have Zach as the captain was evident. It was such a remarkable thing to have two Iowans lead those two teams in the same year. I know I won’t see that ever again.

Both of those individuals are in the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame and we are excited to showcase them and many others at Golf House Iowa.. In fact, as you are reading this we have most likely moved our offices to 8050 Golf House Drive! The facility will be completed in its entirety in early May as the installation of the Hall of Fame and Museum displays as well as the outdoor putting green complex will happen this spring. You can see much more about the building elsewhere in this yearbook, but please make plans to come see it for yourself this summer or fall. This new building sets the IGA up for decades to come in a way that was only ever dreamt of before. We are extremely proud of it and very thankful for all of our donors who stepped up in meaningful ways to make this happen. We did this all together.

Championships continues to be one of the most visible things we do and 2023 saw wonderful competition. We crowned many different champions our events. We brought back qualifying for the Iowa Amateur and it proved to be a wise move as we had nearly 250 players sign up before the field was whittled down to 132 to play at Glen Oaks CC. We had an increase nearly across the board for all men’s and women’s events. Golf is extremely popular right now and the one negative of that is finding host sites. But we have been very lucky to still have many of our member clubs step up to host and we hope to keep the momentum going into 2024.

Our staff continues to amaze me with their dedication to the IGA and our Foundation. They all truly care about every one of our members and are constantly coming up with ideas on how to make everything we do just a little bit better. Our interns were awesome once again. The USGA program (P.J. Boatwright Internships) that funds those internships has been extremely valuable. We are very lucky to have all of these folks working for the game here in Iowa.

As we close the book on 2023 and look forward to 2024 there is a lot of excitement. Certainly the opening of Golf House Iowa is first and foremost, but tied to that is the increased cooperation we will have with First Tee - Central Iowa. They will also be housed at Golf House and we can’t wait to see the junior golfers that come in and out of Golf House for the various programs. That will provide a lot of fulfillment for all of us.

It’s going to be a lot of work but we are ready for it - let’s go!

-Chad Pitts

ITI Sprinting into 2024

In some ways it is hard to believe that we are three months into 2024. But at the same time, I look back in amazement with all that has been accomplished in just three short months. As you might imagine, January was a whirlwind as we were in the final stages of preparation for the Annual Iowa Turfgrass Conference: final conference details were dialed in; registrations were flowing in; and anxiety was setting in. Plus, I managed to slip away to attend the GCSAA National Conference in Phoenix for a couple days. January proved to be one of the busiest months in the Turf Office! In the midst of it all, we started packing and preparing for the move to the new office. A lot going on in a short period of time. But with the help of many, it’s safe to report all missions were accomplished successfully. The Annual conference saw over 400 in attendance and 70 vendors on display at the trade show. Of the attendees responding to our survey 93% rated the conference good to excellent. 90% reported they gained knowledge from the education sessions with 20% acknowledging “Major” knowledge gain. Of the trade show exhibitors responding to the survey, 82% said they would definitely return next year!

A huge thank you goes to the ITI board of directors which includes the conference planning committee. They provide a tremendous amount of support to staff before, during, and after the conference. Thanks also to the Iowa Golf Association staff for their support and help with conference registration and the silent auction. And of course, thank you to all the attendees, trade show exhibitors, sponsors, and education session presenters. Many, many individuals contribute to the success of the conference.

And as mentioned, the Iowa Turfgrass Institute has moved its operational offices along to the brand-new Iowa Golf House, 8050 Golf House Drive, Des Moines 50211. We are excited to begin the new chapter in the new location. And very grateful that the Iowa Golf Association allowed us to “hang our hats” at the Golf House Iowa. Iowa Turfgrass Association and the allied associations have shared office space for many years now and the plan is to continue to do so for a long time. But the truth of the matter is the relationship is more than shared space. We share resources, ideas, and a mutual respect. Henry Ford once said, “If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.” Here’s to many more years of moving forward together!

A Lasting Legacy is Rewarded

Iowa PGA Section has conducted player development programs for years, some are now national initiatives

Committed to growing the game for more than 40 years, the Iowa PGA Section has been a pioneer in developing several successful player development programs that are now flourishing nationally. Some of the programs that are now flourishing nationally. Some of the programs have new names, but they took root years ago in the Hawkeye State.

Over the years, as new leaders have emerged, the Iowa PGA Section has continued its legacy of growing the game by continuing its proven player development programs while also introducing new ones as the popularity of golf swells. For its exemplary contributions and achievements in player development, the Iowa PGA Section is the 2024 recipient of the Herb Graffis Award for growing the game.

Former Iowa Section President Tom McCann and fellow officers Larry Gladson and Ross deBuhr introduced a Drive, Chip and Putt competition for youths in 1999. Patterned after football’s highly popular Punt, Pass and Kick, the golf version focused on the fundamentals of driving, chipping and putting with an emphasis on fun and attracting more youths to the game. In its heyday before national Drive, Chip and Putt competition took root, the Iowa PGA had more than 1,500 participants.

The competitors who qualified through regional events advanced to the finals at TPC Deere Run on Wednesday of John Deere Classic week. The champions in each age group were often greeted by Zach Johnson at the awards ceremony. Today, the competition has been rebranded as the Iowa PGA Skills Challenge.

“The Iowa PGA Section has had Drive, Chip and Putt for several years; we just weren’t smart enough to trademark the name,” chuckles Section Executive Director Greg Mason, PGA. “It was a way to get junior golfers in the Section involved in golf. It’s great to see it achieve such popularity nationally.”

The pioneering Iowa PGA Section, in conjunction with the Iowa Veterans Administration and Riverside Casino & Golf Resort, introduced its GIVE – Golf for injured Veterans Everywhere – Foundation and programming in 2007 to assist Veterans through the therapeutic powers in golf. Starting

with the first class of 20 in 2007, more than 2,300 Veterans have now been introduced to golf through GIVE programs, while more than 40 PGA Professionals (many who served in the military) from the Iowa PGA Section have donated their time to teach and lead clinics.

The Iowa PGA’s GIVE program was used as the model for the PGA of America’s HOPE program under PGA REACH and now involved more than 100,000 Veterans nationwide.

“Our past officers and board members in the Iowa PGA Section have always had great vision and have maintained a commitment to growing the game over the years through many diverse programs,” notes Erin Strieck Iowa PGA Section President and Head Professional and Director of Golf at Pinnacle Country Club in Milan, Illinois.

“Our current leadership follows many of the same principals that led our former leadership to endorse ongoing growth of the game programs and create new ones.”

The Iowa PGA Section is one of the smallest Sections in the country, with nearly 200 PGA Golf Professionals actively working and 58 Life Members. Yet, Iowa consistently has one of the highest per-capita participation rates in national and regional PGA Members or Associates are employed.

The Iowa PGA Section’s rich history of hosting player development program includes its 43-year-old-Junior-Academy, 26 years of the Iowa PGA Junior Tour, 20 years of the Pee Wee Tour, 16 years of the GIVE program for Veterans (2007), 12 years of Swing with Kids, and the Drive, Chip and Putt program that has been rebranded in Iowa as the Iowa PGA Skills Challenge that dates to 1999.

PGA Jr. League also has taken off in the Iowa PGA Section since 2017, with 40 of Iowa’s 86 green grass facilities hosting programs. In 2023, there were more than 750 players with 71 teams at the 40 host Iowa facilities.

The Iowa PGA Section continues to support the national Drive, Chip and Putt competition with the PGA of America, Augusta National and USGA, conducting 23 local

34 Iowa PGA Golf Magazine - Spring Issue Herb Graffis Iowa PGA Section

qualifiers each year.

How has the Iowa PGA Section been so successful in continuing to develop programs that grow the game for all ages and skill levels?

“The Iowa PGA does a nice job of R&D – researching and duplicating other great ideas and then adapting it to our golf customers,” explains Mason. “We’ve taken the successful aspects of other programs and adapted them to Iowa.”

Overcoming So Many Obstacles

Egly’s Advice for Dealing with Challenges

• Take advantage of every possible moment with family, friends and those important to your life.

• Never give up. Quoting Yogi Berra, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.”

• A thought Arnold Palmer shared with me in 1979 when he helped me settle in Orlando: “We’re not here for ourselves, but the better we do the more we can do for others. Just remember that, Mark.”

Mark Egly has battled countless maladies to devote his time to the game and cancer prevention.

PGA of America Golf Professional Mark Egly has spent the past 37 years of his life overcoming obstacles. Now 68, the former tour professional who owns and operates the Des Moines (Iowa) Driving Range is not only a walking, talking, teaching medical miracle, but a living tribute to never growing up.

Egly is the very definition of a survivor. He is the recipient of the 2024 Deacon Palmer Award, which bestows special recognition on a PGA of America Golf Professional who personally displays outstanding integrity, character and leadership in the effort to overcome a major obstacle. Overcoming a major obstacle? How about five or six!

On May 5, 1990, Egly was on his way to a U.S. Open Section Qualifying event when he was involved in a serious auto accident on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River Bridge on I-80. Egly sustained significant injuries to his right arm and shoulder. He was involved in two more auto accidents when other drivers ran red lights – one in 2007 and another five years later – that led to injuries to his back, neck and right knee.

Following a series of surgeries, Egly qualified for PGA TOUR events in 1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1989 and 1995. Post-surgery in 1995, he made a comeback and qualified for the PGA TOUR’s 1995 John Deere Classic at age 40.

Then came a series of life-threatening obstacles. In February of 2018, Egly was diagnosed with COPD and Emphysema, even though he was a life-long non-smoker. Two days before Christmas that same year, Egly was told by doctors to get his affairs in order after tumor was found in his pancreas.

“I was told I had 30 percent chance to live six months, and maybe a 10 percent chance to live more than a year,” he recalls.

The resolute Egly underwent surgery for skin cancer in June of 2020 and suffered a stroke and the ability to speak while giving golf lesson three month later.

After taking numerous medical courses while in college at Michigan State University, Egly was deeply inquisitive over the years about the succession of maladies that had befallen him. So, he initiated research to find some answers.

“With more than four decades of research regarding my family’s ongoing health issues, I came up with a hypothesis,” recalls Egly, who entered the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame in 2022. “I requested a blood test for a circulating protein called Alpha1 Antitrypsin, which confirmed my hypothesis. Turns out I suffered from a disease called Alpha1 Antitrypsin Deficiency.”

Just as Egly has always assisted golfers of all skill levels, his research regarding Alpha1 Antitrypsin has helped

36 Iowa PGA Golf Magazine - Spring Issue Overcoming So Many Obstacles

thousands, even saving hundreds of lives. He has spent his own money to fund a foundation to educate doctors and individuals about this relatively unknown medical calamity, while assisting in the production of additional Alpha1 Antitrypsin to make it available to the masses.

“My discovery has the potential to help millions of individuals in the U.S. to a path of better health and a longer, healthier life,” says Egly. “I was treated like a hypochondriac way too often because my blood test always came back perfect, when I was actually really sick. Alpha1 Antitrypsin is our body’s natural pain killer that fights off inflammation.” Egly, who was born and raised in Jackson, Michigan, attributes his never-lose-hope, resolute attitude to former PGA TOUR standouts Mike and Dave Hill, his boyhood idols, and Arnold Palmer.

“Arnold has been an inspiration and a mentor to me since the day I met him,” assures Egly. “In 1979 Arnold had a strong hand in helping me land my first job at Des Moines Golf and Country Club with one of his Wake Forest golf alumni.”

The irony of him receiving the Deacon Palmer Award, named after Arnolds’s father, is not lost on Egly. “Does knowing Arnold make this award doubly gratifying?” he asks. “No, it makes it more than 100 times more gratifying!” These days, Egly continues to teach and hit balls occasionally. On his birthday last September, he played in an Iowa PGA Section event, captaining his team to a fourth-place finish.

Swings with Kids Program

How Does the Swings with Kids Program Work?

Our goal is to have PGA Professionals partner with school districts to raise funds for the equipment. The equipment is specially designed for safe, indoor and outdoor use and comes with complete curriculum and activities, allowing PE teachers to easily implement the program in their classes. Exposing more children to golf in a fun environment will hopefully encourage their continued play throughout life.

This is a great way to strengthen golf in your school district!

Charlie Burkart Scholarship

The Iowa PGA Foundation annually awards a college scholarship in memory of Charlie Burkart, PGA member for 49 years and head professional at Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids for 42 years. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist students with their education. The scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who will continue contributing to the game of golf.
