Following regional gala presentation dinners held in Bangkok, Dubai, Toronto and London, I am now delighted to announce the winners of the highly coveted World’s Best Awards. The title of ‘World’s Best Property’ was awarded to Vinhomes Riverside by Vinhomes Management JSC. Part of an established ecological urban township at the gateway of Hanoi’s Eastern area in Vietnam, its sustainable design and build delivers a superior green living standard combined with hotel-standard services. The Museum of Ethnography in Budapest, Hungary by Varosliget Europe won the accolade for ‘World’s Best Architecture’. Within Liget Budapest, Europe’s largest urban cultural development, the building respects its surrounding historical green spaces, yet creates a powerful architectural presence to raise international awareness of Budapest and Hungarian culture.    designers behind the Museum of Ethnography in Budapest, Hungary, can think of their work as a gift to the world. It is a part of Liget Budapest – Europe’s largest urban cultural development. And, as one of Europe’s first ethnographic institutions, the museum’s collections comprise more than 200,000 items from the Carpathian Basin and every corner of the globe. Using state-of-the-art technology and a flexible space, the museum needed to house and present the cultural diversity of humanity – no small feat! The architectural design of the museum thus allows access to its collection while also ensuring active social and scientific participation by the institution. The building had to be respectful of the surrounding historical green spaces of the

City Park, while also creating a powerful architectural presence that was capable of boosting international awareness of Budapest and Hungarian culture. The museum has been in operation since 1872 and has been redesigned to become a place which is a national treasure, where all members of society can return to, time and time again. It also contains archived documents, more than 400,000 historical photographs, manuscripts, sound archives and a film library. The museum’s traditional ethnographic collection of national character is internationally prominent, while its pottery, textile and costume collections are the largest of this kind on the continent. The exhibition hall plays an important role in representing the value of the collections,

not just the scale of them. It is designed to give a sense of the range of materials from the museum and how they can be connected to areas of both historic and modern culture (such as usage, lifestyle, decoration, style and everyday celebrations). Visitors at the new museum can become aware of the social origin of the members of the society and also recognise their own social roots. The most important of the institutional requirements made of the new museum building was the establishment of a ‘social museum’, as defined in the museum’s mission statement. And the development of a building capable of fulfilling the role of a museum of international culture. The objective was to create a cultural institution that is much more inclined to use the term ‘culture’ in the

plural, demonstrating the dynamic dialogue between cultures. In this spirit, the Museum of Ethnography had to be a complex concept transformed into bricks and mortar. In the 145 years since the foundation of the Museum of Ethnography, this is the first occasion that it has become possible to provide a worthy and permanent home for this exceptional collection, in a building expressly designed and built for this purpose and equipped with modern facilities. The new Museum of Ethnography will therefore be able to build on and further conceptualise its achievements to date to extend the Hungarian museum network with a new type of institution in which the proactive and sensitive zone of contact for ethnographic museology also operates as an intercultural centre.

The Bachelorette Pad

D

 I  one of the leading design studios operating in the Asia Pacific region today. Helmed by partners Nikki Hunt and Andrea Savage, its work has garnered an international reputation for attention to detail, quality and creativity, winning awards at national, regional and global levels. The Bachelorette Pad in Singapore has won three awards for its kitchen, bathroom and lighting design. The client is a professional, single lady and her apartment is styled to exude a serene glamour with a sense of feminine romance and a nod to her Chinese heritage. She wanted her kitchen to feel fully integrated within the home with a continuous design theme between the different zones. As there was no requirement for entertaining, a kitchen island with a compact dining space was included as well as a fully functioning cooking zone. Design Intervention had been inspired by a television drama set in an Art Deco hotel

featuring curved walls accented by horizontal lines. With this in mind, curved walls were used to soften the kitchen’s hard lines and imbue a warm and feminine ambience. They also echo the rounded forms of the furnishings in the living zone, integrating the two beautifully. Unique bathing experiences were of paramount importance to the client and so a significant portion of floor space has been allocated to create an ultimate retreat. A key requirement was that the master suite flowed seamlessly between the bathing and sleeping areas without any doors. Design Intervention eschewed traditional hard finishes such as tiles and marble and opted for an acrylic solid surface which is warmer and softer to the touch. This was thermally shaped to give continuous, bespoke organic forms and exude the feminine softness required. The lighting design is also a key design feature of this home. Throughout the entire

process, Design Intervention has employed the use of creative lighting to imbue the apartment with an inherent romance and warmth. A particular innovation was to transform furniture pieces into lamps introducing low level lighting without introducing additional items that could clutter the living space. SLB Office Singapore is owned by a fashion design and manufacturing company in the Central Business District. As the business is family run, the design brief was for an environment that would reflect their personality. Rather than exuding a corporate feel, they wanted the workspace to reflect their products. The office enjoys stunning cityscape views and so Design Intervention ensured that the layout allowed each office space and the conference room to have the best of these vistas. The sample measuring area was also situated in front of the large windows to utilise maximum natural daylight.

Early Learning Village

The Early Learning Village is a collaboration between Singapore’s Australian International School and the Stamford American International School. At 50,000m² with five buildings, more than 100 classrooms and a capacity for 2,100 children, it is the world’s largest pre-school space. Design Intervention was tasked with the interior design of the public spaces as well as the libraries. The client brief was to create inspired spaces for young learners, incorporating interactive elements. Both schools subscribe to the world-famous Reggio Emilia philosophy of incorporating the environment as a third teacher. Hence, the overall design softens the architectural colossus to create friendly, intimate spaces that will delight and excite small children and also appeal to their parents. Each school was given its own identity and reflects their individual cultures whilst ensuring a balance in the level of execution.

 H SA is distinguished by its avant-garde architecture. It has a team of over 100 professionals capable of delivering large-scale commercial real estate projects and, following its success on the Polish market, has opened branches in London and Berlin. The company’s award-winning project Chmielna 89 is an office development in the central business area of Warsaw. Created as a new landmark for Chmielna, one of the central streets of the Polish capital, its main design criterion was to provide ample sunlight both for the interior of the building and the neighbouring developments. The building is unique due to its crystallike shape which fulfils the requirement for

maximum natural light. Standing 79.36 metres high, it has 14 floors, each of which provides a panoramic view of the city from its interiors and spectacular terraces. All floors have been designed in an open plan layout for flexible tenant arrangements and include underground parking connected by lifts and staircases. The western elevation is the only one that is entirely vertical as the southern and eastern are slightly tilted at the bottom. Additionally, since the building has an inclined roof or, technically, no roof at all, it was possible to set up three green terraces. The technical equipment is hidden under blinds on top of the northern elevation. Tenants have the benefit of a 600m² two-storey high lobby and space is also provided for a large restaurant and café at the ground floor.

 D  30 years of experience in the design of quality interiors and architecture for the hospitality, residential, corporate and retail markets. The company’s latest award-winning project is for one of Macau’s major casino gaming enterprises. The client’s vision was to develop ‘City of Dreams’, an outstanding entertainment complex including casinos, hotels, retail arcades and speciality restaurants on Cotai Island. As part of this new complex, the client wanted to create an exclusive Chinese restaurant for VIP patrons and their guests. Inarc was thus commissioned to design ‘The Treasure Palace’. As the venue is located on the ground floor and mezzanine floor of the entertainment complex, its design capitalises on both

the daylight factor and picturesque views overlooking the adjacent lake. The resulting restaurant has been designed to accommodate approximately 360 people in both open dining areas and five unique private dining rooms of varying sizes. It was decided that different dining moods should be provided for both lunch and dinner experiences as well as a teamaking ceremony exhibition counter. Custom designed, red and gold ‘swimming fish’ inspired sculptural pendant chandeliers have been created for each seating bay in the large open dining area. Similar but smaller white chandeliers were made for each of the private dining rooms – both versions are backlit by programmable LED lights. Symbolising good luck and fortune, they form stunning centrepieces to this superb dining venue.

  , Aedas is an international architecture and design practice which has won awards for three of its latest projects. Kuntai Wangjing Plot 2 Exhibition Centre in Beijing, China, is unique due to its highly challenging site conditions and design brief which requires it to transform and adapt to two dramatically changing contexts within three years’ time. Aedas’ creative solution was to devise an ‘urban transformation sculpture’ concept which fulfils all the functional requirements in different phases and also creates an attractive appearance. Founder International Financial Center is located in the Wuchang Zhongbei district in Wuhan, China. Two soaring dragons formed the design inspiration for this iconic landmark building. Both stunning towers offer serviced

apartments, office space, and residential units. Additionally, the 240-metre north tower features a fabulous sky lobby and viewing deck, perfect to take in the Wuhan cityscape. Sunshine 100 Wenzhou Centre, Retail Architecture China, is located at the northern end of Qidu Island in Wenzhou. Here, elements of nature and natural resources combine to create an iconic tourist destination. Highlights include Sunrise Mountain with its cinema complex, cultural street and children’s adventure area, while Moon Valley features a series of sunken courtyards. These can be transformed into event spaces, protected by canopies allowing indoor and outdoor events. Galaxy River walkway transcends across the Moon Valley area, where an array of shops completes the retail experience.

H A D (PHA) is earning an international reputation as one of the leading architects of large-scale, mixeduse projects in Asia. Headquartered in London and Hong Kong, the company has branches in Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing. Its awardwinning project Genzon Kexing Technology Park D4 Tower is located in the new CBD of Shenzhen, China. The development is surrounded by six office towers and so PHA’s aim was to design a brand new façade which would put the development firmly in the spotlight, thus making it become a new must-go-to hub for the public. Newly constructed highways and elevated bridges have blocked the area’s pedestrian circulation and made most of the public spaces inaccessible. Therefore, PHA

has designed this central tower to resemble a kaleidoscope. During the day, through the reflection and juxtaposition of the surrounding scene on every folding glass, it becomes a collaged drawing on the building. Each of the six modules is formulated through parametric design with a LED display which forms a pixel screen for night-time use bringing a range of diverse possibilities for public use. A curved canopy was designed for the plaza next to the D4 Tower which enables the area to host various events. A roof garden has also been created as a semi-public open space which can be enjoyed by office workers. By combining and integrating art, office and open space into this central hub, it brings a new and refreshing working environment to all those concerned.

The group owns and operates 97 shopping centres, of which 56 are flagships in the most dynamic cities in Europe and the United States. Wroclavia is the company’s latest award-winning project located at the heart of Wroclaw in Poland. This brand new shopping centre is integrated with a bus station and office spaces and perfectly combines modernity and tradition. The focus of Wroclavia’s designers was to develop a state-of-the-art architectural concept which would become a timeless point of reference. The design refers also to things that are meaningful for Wroclaw residents – such as protecting an ancient oak standing in front of the building and references to the Odra River

which flows through the city in the project’s interior design. The design objective was to develop a multifunctional and multi-storey building, with predominant retail functions, supplemented by dining and leisure areas, offices, a large car park and integrated bus station. Great attention was given to the project’s external walls which were extremely important in the city context. High quality aluminium wall cladding was chosen, extensively illuminated at night and enriched by floral elements. Wroclavia features the big city character of its neighbourhood while creating a modern and comfortable communication hub. It has also established a new shopping and leisure experience, offering a unique atmosphere, new quality of service, flagship stores, the best restaurants and the largest, top class cinema with an IMAX hall.

   by Feza Koca (Architect, MSc), Elips Tasarim has worked on architectural projects amounting to many thousands of square metres. The company’s award-winning project, BJK NO1903, was commissioned by Besiktas Jimnastik Kulubu (BJK) one of the biggest sports clubs in Turkey and located in Akatlar, Istanbul. The brief was to create a facility for the use of BJK’s chairman, board of members, directors, convention members, supporters and the general public. The building has four floors, including two basements, a closed area of 4,600m² and a landscaped area of 2,500m². Working as designer as well as contractor, Elips Tasarim created a fitness club and spa, café and children’s area, lounge for club convention

members, restaurant and bar, a private meeting room for the chairman and club directors and a flexible area for special events. Spacious and well-organised areas have also been designed to meet the service needs of users. The aim was for customers to be able to spend all day in the building, doing different things either alone or with their family. The first basement sports area for example, offers facilities including separate indoor and outdoor swimming pools for adults and children, a studio area with terraces and a full range of wellness amenities. Customers can also attend events in the attractive grounds such as openair cinema viewings, wedding ceremonies and various other celebrations.

  S A in 1982, Boogertman + Partners is a multiaward winning architecture, interior design, urban design and graphic design studio. The company was appointed by one of the world’s leading engineering services firms, WSP, to carry out the space planning, interior design and fit out of its new headquarters of approximately 6,000m² located in the Knightsbridge office park, Bryanston. The brief stipulated that the office interiors must reflect WSP’s culture of collaboration, innovation and excellence throughout its design. Therefore, the resulting interiors illustrate the successful implementation of a tailor-fit workspace strategy and biophilic design principles. This approach not only addresses the aesthetics of the interior but also has a positive impact on the emotional, cognitive and physical wellbeing of users.

1 Discovery Place is the new head office of Discovery, a South African health and life insurance company. Boogertman + Partners were given two distinct goals for the project. The first was to create an architectural statement that captured the essence of the Discovery brand. The second was to improve efficiencies in the day to day working of the company while allowing flexibility for future growth. Key features of the building are the floating ‘nose’ of the west tower which projects over the main intersection and the sun-lit internal atria. A significant challenge was how to move people vertically through the space in a way that allowed them to enjoy the scale of the atriums and concourse without feeling intimidated. The solution was double volume landings looking out from the relative ‘security’ of the smaller space.

Every client receives the benefit not only of Robert’s creativity and personal approach but also of his expert local knowledge to address each specific need. The company’s award-winning project, Z-Spec House, is located in prestigious Grand Harbour within the exclusive Grand Isle Estate Quay, Cayman Islands. This striking, modern house fuses bold design with the clever use of natural light, volume and space. The client’s brief included maximising the wide-open canal frontage to include a double boat slip, a vanishing double-sided water edge pool and a swim up bar.

The greatest influence for this 700m² five-bedroom home was its orientation which incorporates views of the water, the use of photovoltaic solar panels and the natural trade winds that provide cross breezes on hot and humid days. Due to the extreme heat, hurricane winds, potential storm surge and heavy rainfall, all of which are common in the Caribbean, insulated concrete forms with an elastomeric finish were used for heightened strength. Large roof overhangs and window eyebrows were also incorporated into the design style to keep the terraces in shade and the sun’s rays off the glass. Overall, the property has been designed to incorporate the very best for indoor/outdoor entertaining and a true Caribbean lifestyle.

The company’s award-winning project, ‘51 East – Shoes and Bags’, is a 1,000m² boutique within Lagoona Mall in Doha, Qatar. All three entrances are given equal importance and lead to a central ‘hall’ of attraction. The sales area covers 80% of the entire boutique and is split into high and mid-price segments. Its interior design forms a stage without overshadowing the main actors, the goods. With shoes, bags and accessories forming the colourful leading characters, Dobas chose mellow, earth tone colours in contrast. The only exception is a piece of art

that embraces the full scheme of colours and provides a striking focal point. Open and intimate areas invite the customer to meander through the boutique and for VIP customers each category of goods offers a privacy area. The choice of materials was crucial in creating an elegant and welcoming atmosphere. A balance of hard and soft elements was also required to optimise the acoustics within such a large space and with high numbers of visitors expected at the same time. The large shop front window is designed to change the appearance of the boutique according to the seasons. Gates in Arabian style then act as access to the window while also allowing a fascinating peek into the boutique beyond.

 B G is a real estate developer syndicate with over 20 years of proven success focusing on premium developments on a global stage. The company’s project ‘Aperture’ is a new condo and townhouse development in Vancouver which has won a trio of awards. Its name comes from the frames surrounding each floorto-ceiling window. These regulate the amount of light allowed into each unit, much like the aperture of a camera. Located in Oakridge, one of the last areas in Vancouver to be developed, Aperture is an artful enclave of six innovative buildings surrounding a tranquil courtyard garden. Aperture’s architectural design responds to its ‘single-family-transitioning-to-urban’ context with a unique campus-like massing. This steps down in scale from two, six-storey buildings on the busy arterial road down to

stand-alone villas that are sensitive to the single-family neighbourhood to the north of the development. The project’s Asian-inspired landscape is rooted in nature and features wood, bamboo, river rocks and running water. Complementing these surroundings perfectly, Aperture’s exteriors are inspired by iconic images of stacked timber. The design deftly pays homage to the area’s mid-century modernist heritage while adding a West Coast flavour, while spacious interiors feature the simple elegance of hardwood floors, wood veneer cabinetry and quartz countertops. Aperture is now a distinct landmark development in Vancouver. Its ongoing goals are to encourage community interaction through unique open spaces in a traditionally introverted, single-family neighbourhood and to gain LEED Gold certification.

 L  a wellestablished interior designer based in Moscow, Russia. Her award-winning project, Berendeevo Tsarstvo in Siberia, has been built on a 550m² plot of land in traditional Russian style yet with all modern requirements for 21st century living. Named after the fairy tale pagan kingdom of the mysterious King Berendey, who was believed to be a sorcerer, its design concept follows a theme of Russian fairy tales. The ultimate aim was to create a fabulous palace as if straight from a story book. Several non-standard solutions were used to make the newly built wooden house appear as if it has been lived in for many years. The ceilings are all trimmed with a hand-painted pine board featuring a different pattern

in every room and ornaments have been artificially aged. Following the fairy tale theme, lighting was most important and so lights and chandeliers have been specially selected to be in-keeping with the theme of each room. The client requested a fireplace to create a centre piece and talking point in the living room. In order to achieve this, several thousand ceramic tiles were handmade in accordance with samples from 13th century craftsmen with every design being unique. Each side of the central fireplace symbolises a different season and the finished result is so elegant that it resembles a porcelain casket. Featuring beautifully carved staircases, traditional Russian pottery and folk art crafts, this is a fairy tale palace come true.

The boutique firm offers clients a wide range of design services with personalised attention to detail and is dedicated to providing innovative design solutions to suit each client’s economic, marketing and aesthetic goals. The unique designs created by RAD reflect the culture and atmosphere of their locations, as demonstrated admirably by its award-winning project, The Shore Club Turks and Caicos. The resort’s initial design began in 2007, with the client’s directive being to maximise the allowable density of condo-hotel units on to the nine-acre beach front site. This yielded RAD’s first design with five beach front fivestorey condo-hotel buildings and all associated amenities of a typical Caribbean resort. This

design progressed all the way through to the completion of construction documents until the economic recession of 2008 shelved the entire project. The client then recommissioned RAD in 2011 with a new brief to retain two of the low-rise condo-hotel buildings and introduce six luxurious six-bedroom villas, all with their own pools, hot tubs and beach front access. In addition to the condo-hotel product, the brief included a main lobby and reception building, administrative offices, four food and beverage outlets, a spa, fitness centre, multi-function banquet space, four distinct pools, and all back of house operational areas required for a fivestar resort. At the time of design and construction, the allowable building height was seven stories, but the client chose to keep a lower density

property and the design was established for five stories. Being five stories established the 100 feet building setback from the existing beach front vegetation line. Inspiration for the design concept was sought from the tropical British Colonial and Barbadian architecture of Oliver Messel. The climatic context of the development greatly impacted design of the master plan. Being on the windward, beach front side of the island, it was decided that the largest pool be tucked behind the two low-rise guest suite buildings and flanked with cabanas to act as a wind buffer on overly windy days. While the guest suite buildings and villas are of the more traditional vocabulary, the client brief requested that the public area designs lean towards contemporary Caribbean casual. Coral render is utilised to great effect on the interior

and exterior in patterns to simulate coarse cut coral stone. A system of corridors and lockout doors were designed to allow for full rental flexibility for all bedrooms. To keep guest and employee activities interaction to a minimum, a basement level tunnel system connects the entire resort from the main back of house building through all public buildings to under the guest suite buildings and villas. All stairs and lifts extend to the back of house basement for easy employee access for housekeeping, room service, butler, bellman or any maintenance calls. In addition to The Shore Club Turks and Caicos’ stunning and innovative design, its location sets this resort apart from others in Providenciales as it is the first and only hotel situated on Long Bay Beach which gives guests the feel of a private island experience.

   27 years ago, Bareo Co. Ltd has grown to become one of Thailand’s leading interior design companies. Its continued expansion inevitably lead to the need for new offices, creating the perfect opportunity to extend Bareo’s skills into architectural design, taking total control of its destiny. Incorporating fundamental concepts from the ancient Chinese philosophy of Feng Shui, design cues were taken from the ideas of bubbles and sponges to meet the basic element of ‘water’, complementing the dominant ‘earth’ element of Bareo’s founder. This has translated to gentle, curvaceous forms utilising insulation foam and FSC wood that avoid sharp edges and corners, with double skin facades sporting rounded cutouts over large glazed areas.

Careful adherence to the flow of Qi encourage a flow of money and prosperity through the positioning of the main office areas. Seven entrances fulfil specific functions, covering staff, visitors and services. Temperature management is a major factor in Thailand, so the physical building design is intended to minimise heat uptake, supporting air conditioning and reducing energy usage. The building includes a cafeteria and fitness area for staff, ensuring all their wellness needs are met. The office also incorporates a luxurious residential space on the second floor, with a sweeping spiral staircase connecting to the open-plan living area. The end result is a striking and eminently usable building that will take Bareo into the next few decades of existence.
