Information on fiche can be made available within an electronic environment and networked across standard PCs,or faxed direct, without affecting the original fiche, using the Microimage Digital Scanner 300 (DS300).

The DS300 scans images from both fiche and 16mm roll film into a PC where information can be refined onscreen before being transm itted to laser printer, fax machine or electronic network.

“Fiche should no longer be considered ju st an archival medium now th a t fiche-held information can be digitised, updated and networked. It m eans th a t users can now combine on-line availability with the proven benefits of using fiche, such as low-cost, space savings and reliable storage,” explains Colin Kaye, Microgen UK’s COM product manager.

Microgen also claim th at documents such as customer statem ents and invoices can now be personalised and laser printed with spot colour to focus’ readers’ attention. The chosen document may be scanned into a PC and the digitised image transferred to the latest-generation spot colour laser printer and a Computer O utput onto Microfiche (COM) platform with facilities to replicate logos, tradem arks, special fonts and graphics.

The Federation viewer for 35mm roll film has been developed to m eet the need for a cheap, portable viewer, designated the AV35, which can be used for census indexing and other studies. It will be of use to other types of researcher, who will be independent of the shortage of 'screen' type viewers in record offices etc.

The viewer needs no power supply; it depends on light from a desk lamp, or from a bright window. It consists of a press steel 'tray', with a hinged stand. The viewer may be used erect, with light directed onto the upper surface of the stand. The stand may also be folded back, and the viewer used horizontally, laid on a sheet of white paper. Light may be shone on the paper, with the same effect as above. In both of these modes, the viewer may be stood on a pile of books, or a box, to make view35mm microfilm comes in two forms. If the frames are to be read when the film runs vertically, it is called 'cine' mode, if the frames are to be read horizontally, then it is called 'comic' mode. The two ways of using the viewer allows for these.

The film and take-up spools may be fitted at either end of the tray, depending upon which way the film is wound. The lens mount has four small holes in its base, which fit over pins projecting from the tray. The lens may thus be mounted 'upwards', or 'sideways', as convenient. The lens is best fitted sideways, for full frame .viewing.

The lens is of an 8x three element type, and may be focussed using the knurled ring at the top. Best results are obtained by placing the eye close to the lens. Spectacle wearers should use their distance glasses, or the upper part of bifocals.

To fit a film, remove the lens by lifting it from the pins, clip the spools between the two pairs of'dim pled' arms, lead the film from one to the other, ensuring th at it is between the two pairs of pins, and replace the lens.
