A new jo in t ven tu re com pany

UDO FM Limited claims to be the first specialist facilities m anagem ent company, to be set up in London and Glasgow, specifically to address one of the least addressed, yet critical areas of business support services - all aspects of document management. This new joint venture company is a strategic move by UDO Holdings with Pentangle Consulting Group. UDO was established in London seventy-five years ago and now controls sixty reprographics and office supplies centres throughout the UK, with additional European operations. Pentangle Consulting Group (PCG) is less th an two years old but has already become one of the UK’s leading specialist consultancies in Facilities M anagem ent (FM).

It offers companies the facility to outsource their docum ent m anagem ent and reprographic operations, allowing them to concentrate on their core business while UDO FM uses its expertise to manage their centralised print rooms, providing and m anaging all photocopying requirem ents, mono and colour, stationery and office supplies. It covers all aspects of the m anagement of records and documents held in paper, electronic or optical form, together with their creation, storage, retrieval and distribution, both internally and externally - through to the most effective way of using information technology to store, m anipulate, retrieve and distribute data on a corporate nationwide basis. To this end, UDO Holdings pic has invested £2 million in technology over the last three years.

Statistics reveal th a t a significant percentage of business operating costs is used in the m anagem ent of its paper based information. Studies show th at these costs increase, by up to a factor of five, when documents are misfiled, photocopied badly, printed wrongly or even lost. For example, information from the International Records M anagem ent Council shows th at documents on average are copied nineteen times, th a t it costs £14 for each document filed and £84 for each document misfiled. The large sums of corporate money spent on IT are only effective on a small percentage of total information assets, as less th an 10% of a typical organisation’s information is held on computer in electronic format. As technology develops, the convergence of paper based and electronically held information is enabling an allembracing document m anagem ent service to be possible.

UDO FM’s fundam ental aim is to bring tangible benefits to each and every client from simpler administration, budgeting, invoicing and flexible FM contracts, designed to meet changing business needs, to the accurate m easurem ent of quality and value for money expected of such a critical service. In short,UDO FM will offer the key elements of a professional FM service which evidence shows is sadly missing from too many of today’s FM contracts.

GKL is now officially 'up and running'.

GKL is a company recently formed in collaboration with Plasmec Systems Ltd. to m arket G ratek products. Plasmec will continue to m anufacture G ratek equipment and GKL will m arket them and provide after sales support. The new arrangem ent, they say, enables them to cope with the increased demand for G ratek products and offer an improved service to their customers.

Since Gratek and Plasmec Systems joined forces in May of last year, the sales of G ratek microfilm cam eras have shown a m arked increase. Recent major multi-cam era installations include the US Government, the UK Public Record Office and the National Archives in Algeria, with other camera sales as far afield as Thailand, Singapore, France and Turkey.

After examining other available cameras the UK Public Record Office have installed a G ratek Congress II. This camera is particularly well suited to the varied documents to be filmed at the PRO. The Congress II will accept large fragile bound books, ancient vellum m anuscripts and 19th and 20th century brittle books. The Public Record Office currently have nine G ratek cameras in use.
