Allen now offering AP-6 rew inding system

The Allen Products Company is offering a motorised rewinding system for the film magazine of its AP-6 source document processor.

Now, through use of a foot pedal, an operator can speed the rewinding process considerably, compared to hand rewinding, thus allowing a significant increase in productivity. In addition, the magazine system has an automatic brake to catch the end of the film. Major benefits of this system are achieved where higher volumes of film are processed on a daily basis.

Only 55 inches long, the AP-6 assures the most perm anent quality output possible. It is also the most compact deep tank processor th a t provides for accurate control of processing variables. Such capacity is possible because digital readouts and simplified controls allow for easier and more accurate monitoring of tem perature and speed.

Image Systems Technology, Inc., the creators of CAD Overlay ESP have announced the release of RAStation EDIT. A Windows based engineering drawing editor for draughtsm en, engineers, planners and designers. RAStation EDIT provides a powerful and accurate method to change scanned paper drawings and produce new prints. Unlike other drawing programmes, RAStation EDIT offers the capabilities of CAD without the complexity.

Conventional methods of modifying paper-based engineering drawings involve either m anual drafting , with pencil and eraser, or combining a scanned raster image with a CAD system. The simplicity of RAStation EDIT allows draughtsm en, architects, planners and designers to modify scanned raster images of paper drawings quickly and easily, without the added cost and complex learning curve of a CAD system. RAStation EDIT is available in single-user or network licence versions. It is easily integrated with other Image Systems Rasterware products such as ViewBase for Windows, used to find, view, redline and plot scanned paper images and AutoCAD drawings. M ark-ups made in ViewBase can be imported directly into RAStation EDIT.

RAStation EDIT can be used in combination with CAD Overlay ESP. Scanned paper drawings can be prepared or cleaned-up using RAStation EDIT for later revision inside AutoCAD using CAD Overlay ESP.

A demonstration version of RAStation EDIT can be obtained by contacting Image Systems Technology.

Since 1987, Image Systems has developed leading edge software products for working with paper drawings captured in raster format by a document scanner. These products, called Rasterware, are software building blocks for storing, retrieving, editing and distributing scanned images. W ith over 35,000 users,Image Systems claims th at Rasterware products represent the largest installed base of scanned drawing software in the world. The Image Systems product line is available in seven languages, in over 57 countries, on m ultiple platforms, and is sold exclusively through a worldwide network of authorised resellers.

3M has introduced two new high capacity quarter-inch data cartridges offering 5 and 2.5 gigabytes respectively.

The 3M Magnus 5.0 gb data cartridge is designed to work on a new 5.25-inch form factor tape drive from Wangtek, a major m anufacturer of quarter-inch data cartridge drives. Known as the W angtek 9500ES, the drive conforms to the Quarter-Inch Cartridge standard (QIC-5gbc) for compatibility.

The 3M Magnus 2.5gb d ata cartridge is designed to operate with Tandberg D ata Storage’s new TDC 4200 tape backup drive system which conforms to the QIC-2gbc standard for compatibility. It is a longer length version of the 3M Magnus 2.0gb data cartridge. ! Both new QIC tape cartridges are 900 Oersted class, 1200 foot tapes which are developments of earlier generations of 760 feet and 950 feet. They also include a third tape guide, providing improved tracking ability for the high track densities of gigabyte media.

These new tape cartridges feature a 3M binder polymer process which increases tape strength and durability. It contains 3M’s Black W atch tape with antistatic backcoating which reduces data errors. They also exhibit wide environm ental tolerances and so may be used under a variety of operating conditions.

3M, the inventors of Quarter-Inch D ata Cartridge technology, claim it to be the world’s most popular tape backup technology, boasting an installed base of more than nine million systems, with an expected shipment of an additional three million drives this year alone.

The new drives from W angtek and Tandberg are fully backward read- and write- compatible with certain other QIC standards, while also providing users with a convenient, reliable m igration path to higher capacities planned for the future.

3M has also introduced a new DC6000 Series data cartridge drive cleaning kit.

Cleaning a tape drive is an integral part of a properly managed data security policy, and one which is often overlooked. Contamination of a tape drive by dust or dirt can underm ine an otherwise perfect backup routine, and can therefore cause problems in the event of a necessary restore operation from tape backup.

The new 3M DC6000 Series data cartridge drive cleaning kit is designed for use on a 5.25 inch form factor QIC tape drive. The cartridge is operated by the drive itself, m aking it easy to use, and features a unique system th a t effectively removes contam inants from the read/write head and drive capstan. There is a specially formulated cleaning solution which contains no chemicals known to deplete the ozone layer. A snap-on storage case protects the pad when not in use. Each kit provides up to 21 cleanings, and is compatible with QIC Standard 1/4” data cartridge drives, including drive using 3M “Magnus” data cartridges.

3M already supply a drive cleaning kit suitable for DC2000 Series mini-cartridge drives.

Double sided scanner at breakthrough price.

Bell & Howell have announced the 8000SP double sided DIP scanner for systems integrators, available at a breakthrough price, for double sided scanning, of £5400.

The 8000SP is a compact, tower design, mid volume scanner, offering 100 sheet auto feed of documents, ranging in size from tickets and receipts up to A4.

Resolution is user-configurable from 150 to 400 dpi. The scanner will capture both sides of an A4 document at 22 ppm (44 sides per m inutes) at 200 dpi.

The 8000SP has a video interface and is supported by industry PC imaging interface leaders, Kofax and Xionics.

Peter Gawen, Bell & Howell Imaging Peripherals M arketing Manager, comments: "The trend towards double sided scanning is irreversible. The 8000SP reflects this trend with a breakthrough in both price and performance."

The 8000SP offers the choice of both double sided and single sided scanning in a single machine, although a single-side-only version can be offered if required.

Further flexibility is built into the 8000SP by providing a 3 to 4 dpm LED plain paper printing function as a standard feature.
