EDITORIAL

Cieľom ceny Slovenskej komory architektov za architektúru CE ZA AR je prostredníctvom súťažnej prehliadky predstaviť tvorbu svojich členiek a členov navonok voči verejnosti, a teda aj voči potenciálnym investorom. Ukázať, akým spôsobom môže architektka/ architekt vytvoriť optimálny návrh, propagovať dobré riešenia a vzdelávať širokú verejnosť o postavení a poslaní architektov v spoločnosti. Publikácia, ktorú držíte v ruke, mapuje aktuálny, už dvadsiaty ročník. Je správou o architektonickej tvorbe na Slovensku za posledné dva roky. CE ZA AR už však nepochybne má aj potenciál byť komunikačnou platformou pre rôzne výzvy a témy, ktorým architektúra alebo architekti na Slovensku čelia. Každý ročník nám medzinárodná porota vyberie nielen nominácie a laureátov, ale sformuluje tiež témy, ktoré silno rezonujú alebo, naopak, nerezonujú dostatočne. Tento rok sa všetky dajú pokryť hlavným heslom ročníka, ktorým je #zelenaprearchitekturu. Rôzne nominované diela ukazujú, že sa na túto tému dá pozerať aj inak, ako cez izolované technické riešenia bez koncepčného vkladu. Víkendový dom z recyklovaných tehál, skonvertovaná stodola, záchrana hradu v Uhrovci alebo vily v Tatrách – všetky pracujú s transformáciou existujúceho do nového, lepšieho a plne vyhovujúceho požiadavkám klientov alebo návštevníkov. Na záver parafráza slov predsedu SKA Iľju Skočka z tlačovej konferencie k vyhláseniu nominácií CE ZA AR 2021: boli by sme veľmi radi, ak by sa objem prostriedkov investovaných z plánu obnovy a stability pretavil aj do kvality riešení, ktoré štát, mestá a obce svojim obyvateľom prinesú. A teda zelenú dostane boj proti klimatickej zmene, práve prostredníctvom kvalitného urbanizmu a architektúry.

The aim of the CE ZA AR Prize for Architecture of the Slovak Chamber of Architects is to use the competition to showcase the work of the Chamber’s members to the public and thus also to potential investors. To show how an architect is able to create an optimal design, promote good solutions and educate the wide public about the position and mission of architects in society. The publication you have in front of you covers already the twentieth edition of the prize. It brings a message about architectural production in Slovakia over the last two years. Without a doubt, CE ZA AR also has the potential to be a communication platform for various challenges and topics faced by architecture and architects in Slovakia.

Each year, an international jury selects not only the nominations and laureates, but also highlights topics that resonate strongly, or, on the contrary, do not resonate enough. This year, they can all be included under the main motto of this edition – #greenforarchitecture. Various nominated projects show that it is possible to approach this topic differently than through isolated technical solutions without any concept. A weekend house from recycled bricks, a converted barn, and saving the Uhrovec castle or a villa in the Tatras – they all transform the existing into something new and improved, fully satisfying the demands of the clients or visitors. Paraphrasing the words of SKA’s chair, Iľja Skoček, spoken during the press conference announcing CE ZA AR 2021 nominations, this editorial can be concluded by saying: we would be very glad if the volume of funds invested from the recovery and resilience plan could also be reflected in the quality of the solutions that the state, cities, and municipalities offer to their inhabitants. And the fight against climate change will receive a green light thanks to high-quality urbanism and architecture.

TÁŇA BUIJS-VÍTKOVÁ /nl/

Slovenská rodáčka, pôsobiaca od roku 1988 v Amsterdame, kde vedie ateliér Aiscube. Do roku 2011 pracovala v renomovanom ateliéri Uytenhaak, kde autorsky zrealizovala niekoľko ocenených a široko publikovaných projektov, ako napríklad Life Sciences University of Groningen (NL) alebo ERIBA Groningen (NL). Aj v súčasnosti sú ťažiskom jej práce univerzitné projekty, vrátane renovácií a interiéru. Popri práci vo vlastnom ateliéri pôsobí aj ako hosťujúca pedagogička na Fakulte architektúry Technickej Univerzity v Delfte, kde vedie diplomový ateliér bakalárov.

A Slovak national working in Amsterdam since 1988, where she leads the Aiscube studio. Until 2011, she worked in the renowned Uytenhaak studio, where she authored several award-winning and widely published projects such as Life Sciences University of Groningen (NL) or ERIBA Groningen (NL). At present, the focus of her work still lies in university projects including refurbishments and interiors. Besides working in her own studio, she is also active as a visiting lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University in Delft, where she leads the diploma workshops for bachelor students.

JAKUB CIGLER /cz/

Po absolvovaní Fakulty architektúry ČVUT v Prahe pôsobil v Londýne a v roku 1989 založil vlastné štúdio. Ateliér Jakub Cigler Architekti je pokračovaním architektonického štúdia Cigler Marani Architekti, s tradíciou od roku 2001.

V súčasnosti vedie vyše sedemdesiatčlenný tím, ktorého realizácie a projekty získali mnoho ocenení nielen doma. Ateliér sa venuje riešeniu urbanistických celkov, kancelárskych budov, rezidenčných objektov, obchodných a hotelových centier, ako i objektov verejnej vybavenosti, vrátane interiérov. Projektuje novostavby i rekonštrukcie a vždy sa pritom zaoberá urbanistickým riešením a kultiváciou verejného priestoru. Pre jeho tvorbu je charakteristická práca so zelenými plochami. Svoje projekty prezentoval na niekoľkých výstavách. V roku 1992 sa predstavil v Československom pavilóne na benátskom Bienále, v tom istom roku sa v Prahe konala Neofunkcionalistická výstava architektúry.

Nasledovali Výstava architektúry Mánes v Prahe, Future Systems London, výstava I.F.A Paris Library v Paríži a spomeňme tiež stálu expozíciu v rámci Výstavy českej architektúry v Národnej galérii v Prahe.

After graduating from the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University in Prague, he worked in London and in 1989, he founded his own studio. The Jakub Cigler Architekti architectural studio is a continuation of the Cigler Marani Architekti studio, with a tradition going back to 2001. At present, he leads a team of more than seventy people, and their projects have received many awards in the Czech Republic and beyond.

The studio is focused on designing urban areas, office buildings, residential structures, shopping, and hotel centres, as well as public facilities including their interiors. It designs new structures as well as refurbishments, and it always deals with the urban design and cultivation of the public space, too. His work is characterised by the use of green areas. He presented his projects on several exhibitions. In 1992, he introduced his work in the Czechoslovak Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, and in the same year, the Neo-functionalist Exhibition of Architecture in Prague took place. This was followed by the Mánes Exhibition of Architecture in Prague, Future Systems London, and I.F.A Paris Library Exhibition in Paris. The permanent exposition at the Exhibition of the Czech Architecture in the National Gallery in Prague is also worth mentioning.

BOHUNKA KOKLESOVÁ /sk/

Pôsobí na Katedre teórie a dejín umenia Vysokej školy výtvarných umení v Bratislave. Venuje sa výskumnej, publikačnej a kurátorskej činnosti.

Je členkou AICA – medzinárodného združenia historikov a kritikov umenia. Vo svojej výskumnej činnosti sa venuje problematike vzťahu umenia a politiky, štúdiu totalitných režimov, umenia a vizuálnej kultúry 40. a 50. rokov 20. storočia.

V tejto oblasti publikovala dve monografie V tieni Tretej ríše, oficiálne fotografie slovenského štátu (2009) a Súmrak doby, prelamovaná história, pamäť, fotografia (2018). V rámci kurátorskej činnosti sa venuje súčasnému umeniu a fotografii, pripravila celú radu výstav pre domáce aj zahraničné publikum. Je členkou viacerých odborných rád a nadačných inštitúcií podporujúcich rozvoj umenia a kultúry na Slovensku, za svoju prácu získala viacero národných ocenení. Od roku 2019 je rektorkou VŠVU.

She works at the Department of Theory and History of Art of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. She is active as a researcher, author of publications and a curator.

She is a member of AICA – the International Association of Art Critics. In her research, she deals with the relationship between art and politics, and studies the totalitarian regimes, art, and visual culture of the 1940s and 1950s. In this field, she published two monographs V tieni Tretej ríše, oficiálne fotografie slovenského štátu (2009) and Súmrak doby, prelamovaná história, pamäť, fotografia (2018). In her curator‘s activities, she focuses on contemporary art and photographs, and she has prepared a whole range of exhibitions for both Slovak and international audiences.

She is a member of multiple expert councils and foundations supporting the development of art and culture in Slovakia, and she has received several national awards for her work. She has been a rector of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design since 2019.

PETER MORAVČÍK /sk/

Absolvoval Fakultu architektúry SVŠT (1987) a individuálne štúdium na Divadelnej fakulte VŠMU. Profesionálnu dráhu začal v bývalom ŠPTÚ Bratislava, v rokoch 1991 – 2004 pôsobil v kancelárii Architekti Moravčík & Šujan.

V roku 2009 založil architektonický ateliér PMArchitekti, ktorý nadväzuje na projektovanie administratívnych a bytových stavieb, rekonštrukcií a interiérov. Je laureátom ceny CE ZA AR 2002 za Bytový súbor Stromová ul. 34–52 na Kramároch v Bratislave, nominovaným na cenu CE ZA AR 2007 a laureátom Ceny časopisu ARCH za Obytný súbor Rozadol v Ružovej doline v Bratislave. Po roku 2007 rozšíril svoje portfólio o obytný súbor Tri veže, Bajkalská ul.

He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Slovak College of Technology (1987) and also completed an individual study programme at the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts. His professional career started in the former State Research Planning and Research Institute Bratislava, and between 1991 and 2004, he worked in the Architekti Moravčík & Šujan office. In 2009, he founded the PMArchitekti architectural studio, which continues with the design of administrative and residential buildings, as well as reconstructions and interiors. He is a laureate of CE ZA AR 2002 for the Stromová 34 – 52 Residential Complex in Kramáre in Bratislava, a nominee for CE ZA AR 2007 and a laureate of the ARCH Magazine Award for the Rozadol Residential Complex in Ružová dolina in Bratislava. After 2007, he expanded his portfolio by the Three Towers residential complex in Bajkalská street (2009), the Villinki residential complex in Staré Grunty, Karlova Ves (2014), the Belaria residential complex in Tupého street (2014), a set of family houses called Condominium Devín (2014), the Rezidencia Hron residential complex in Zvolen (2015) or the Seberiniho multifunctional complex in Bratislava (2019).

VLADIMÍR (TOM) SITTA /cz/

Po absolvovaní štúdia na Mendelovej univerzite v Brne začal pôsobiť ako krajinársky architekt v Československu. V roku 1979 emigroval najskôr do Nemeckej spolkovej republiky a následne do Austrálie, ktorá mu je dodnes druhým domovom.

V Austrálii založil s prof. Richardom Wellerom (Penn University) dve medzinárodne pôsobiace štúdiá – Terragram a Room 4.1.3. Obe firmy sú známe svojimi inovatívnymi a idiosynkratickými návrhmi, ktoré získali medzinárodné ocenenia – napr. finále v súťažiach na pamätník teroristického útoku na Pentagon v septembri 2001 (1126 návrhov), pamätník pri príležitosti 200 rokov Francúzskej revolúcie (vyše 700 návrhov) a pamätník obetiam tsunami v Thajsku, ďalej Reconcilliation Place v Canbere a realizovaný pamätník pripomínajúci Battle of Vinegar Hill v Austrálii. Je držiteľom ocenenia Lenné Preis (1981) a ceny prezidenta AILA za prispenie ku kultúre krajinárskej architektúry v Austrálii (1985).

Medzi jeho najvýznamnejšie realizované projekty patria National Museum Australia v Canbere, privátny polo klub Garangula, Fusionpolis Sky Gardens v Singapure (arch. Kurokawa), Walla Mulla Park v Sydney (ocenený cenou za udržateľnosť). Oba ateliéry sa dovedna podieľali na projektoch vo viac než 20-tich krajinách. Popri projektoch vo verejnej sfére sú to najmä záhrady, ktoré je možné nájsť vo viac ako 50 zahraničných publikáciách, ako aj príspevky v reláciách televízií Arte a BBC. Od konca 2012 pôsobí Sitta na Fakulte architektúry ČVUT, kde vedie Ústav krajinárskej architektúry. Jeho ateliér kladie dôraz na stieranie hraníc medzi disciplínami ako architektúra, urbanizmus, krajinárska architektúra, design alebo scénografia a na testovanie študentských návrhov na medzinárodnej scéne. Pravidelne sa zúčastňuje súťaží, ktoré považuje za terapiu proti demencii.

After graduating from the Mendel University in Brno, he started working as a landscape architect in Czechoslovakia. In 1979, he first emigrated to the Federal Republic of Germany and then to Australia, which has remained his second home until the present. In Australia, he and Professor Richard Weller (Penn University) founded two internationally active studios – Terragram and Room 4.1.3. Both companies are known for their innovative and idiosyncratic designs, which received international awards – for instance the finals in the competitions for the September 2001 Pentagon Terrorist Attack Memorial (1,126 entries), a memorial commemorating 200 years of the French Revolution (over 700 entries) and the Victims of the Tsunami Memorial in Thailand, then also the Reconciliation Place in Canberra, as well as the executed Battle of Vinegar Hill Memorial in Australia. He is a laureate of the Lenné Preis (1981) and of the AILA President‘s Award for his contribution to the culture of landscape architecture in Australia (1985). His most significant finished projects include the National Museum Australia in Canberra, the Carangula private polo club, Fusionpolis Sky Gardens in Singapore (arch.

Kurokawa), and Walla Mulla Park in Sydney (awarded with the sustainability award). Both studios have taken part in projects in more than 20 countries Besides projects in the public sphere, they mainly include gardens, which can be found in more than 50 international publications as well as contributions on Arte and BBC. Since late 2012, Sitta works at the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University at the position of the head of the Department of Landscape Architecture. His studio puts emphasis on blurring the boundaries between disciplines such as architecture, urbanism, landscape architecture, design, or scenography, and on testing students’ designs on the international scene.

He regularly takes part in competitions and considers them to be a therapy against dementia.

PAVOL ŠILLA /sk/

Žije a pôsobí v Prešove. Štúdium architektúry absolvoval na Fakulte umení TUKE v Košiciach.

Od roku 2005 je členom prešovského ateliéru zerozero, kde sa spoluautorsky podieľa na jeho tvorbe. Ateliér zerozero má na svojom konte viaceré nominácie a ocenenia, je dvojnásobným laureátom ceny CE ZA AR za projekty rekonštrukcie Kasární Kulturpark v Košiciach a námestia Centrum na Sídlisku III. v Prešove, aj laureátom Ceny ARCH a Ceny Dušana Jurkoviča.

Od roku 2009 s kolegami pedagogicky pôsobí na Katedre architektúry Fakulty umení TUKE v Košiciach. Malou odbočkou od tvorby zerozero je jeho sólový projekt „Dom pre brata“, ktorý bol v minulom roku nominovaný na cenu CE ZA AR.

He lives and works in Prešov. He studied architecture at the Faculty of Arts at the Technical University of Košice. Since 2005, he has been a member of the zerozero studio from Prešov, where he participates in its designs as a co-author. The zerozero studio received multiple nominations and awards. It is a two-time laureate of the CE ZA AR prize for the projects of Kulturpark Košice barracks and the Centrum square in the Sídlisko III housing estate in Prešov, and it also received the ARCH Prize and the Dušan Jurkovič Prize. Since 2009, he is active as a lecturer together with his colleagues at the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Technology in Košice. A small detour from the work for the zerozero studio is his solo project “House for a Brother”, which was nominated for CE ZA AR last year.

ŠTĚPÁN VALOUCH /cz/

Spolu s Jiřím Opočenským založil v roku 2007 architektonickú kanceláriu ov-a. V priebehu pätnásťročnej praxe postavili stavby rôznej mierky a funkcie. Tímu sa podarilo uspieť vo vyzvaných i verejných architektonických súťažiach. Ich práca bola publikovaná naprieč médiami, k desiatim rokom kancelárie vydali knihu o svojej tvorbe.

V roku 2020 získali Českú cenu za architektúru za sídlo firmy Lasvit. Štepán Valouch vedie ateliér navrhovania na Fakulte architektúry ČVUT.

Together with Jiří Opočenský, they founded the ov-a architectural office in 2007. Within their fifteen years of history, they have built structures of various sizes and functions. The team has been successful in multiple invited and open architectural competitions. Their work has been published across the media, and they published a book about their projects on the occasion of ten years of their office. In 2020, they were awarded the Czech Prize for Architecture for the headquarters of the Lasvit company. Štepán Valouch teaches the design workshop at the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University.

TÁŇA BUIJS-VÍTKOVÁ (NL) Prešli ste cestu naprieč celým Slovenskom, čo vo Vás zanechalo najsilnejší dojem?

TBV Uvedomila som si, že kvalitná architektúra sa nesústreďuje len do veľkých miest, ale robí sa po celom Slovensku. Takmer vždy je za tým optimálny tender, klient a architekt.

Na Slovensku ma zaujalo intenzívne prepojenie týchto dvoch subjektov, kde sa architekt svojím nasadením stáva priam priateľom klienta a takto cez veľmi osobný kontakt dokáže veľmi citlivo reagovať na jeho potreby. Páčila sa mi rôznorodosť architektov, stále väčšia nezávislosť v tvarosloví a nápaditosť riešení a materiality. Po dvoch rokoch „CE ZA AR-ovania“ vnímam dokonca aj určitú osobitosť „slovenského“ rukopisu. A ten sa mi páči!

Na druhej strane, videli sme aj negatívne tendencie, z ktorých som smutná.

To, čo sa deje v Demänovskej doline je neospravedlniteľné! Ako sa môže jedna z našich najskvostnejších dolín v takej krátkej dobe premeniť na Disneyland megalománie a nevkusu? Viem, že jadro problému nie je ani zďaleka u architektov, ale na Slovensku sú, žiaľ, aj architekti, ktorí tu radi priložia ruku k dielu. A všimla som si, že sa to, žiaľ, nedeje len v Demänovskej doline.

Obrovský rozporuplný dojem na mňa zanechala návšteva Machnáča v Trenčianskych Tepliciach.

Na jednej strane obrovské nasadenie ľudí, ktorí sa snažia o záchranu tohto skvostu funkcionalistickej architektúry, na druhej strane je pre mňa až neuveriteľné, že po toľkých rokoch od čias divokej privatizácie na Slovensku sú možnosti štátu konať také obmedzené. Pred našimi očami sa nám rozpadá kultúrna pamiatka nepochybne európskeho významu. Neospravedlniteľné!

Po tomto hlboko negatívnom zážitku sme sa zrazu ocitli na Hrade Uhrovec. Očarujúce! Ako skupina nadšencov s minimálnymi prostriedkami, ale s neuveriteľným nasadením a profesionalitou, premieňa piesok na zlato. Bolo to ako v rozprávke. Tu až do očí bila úžasná skromnosť a zanietenosť architekta a ľudí okolo neho. Práca architekta tu nebola len vo fantastickej profesionalite, ale povzniesla sa na poslanie, vyššiu métu, do „optima forma“ našej profesie. A aj v tomto prípade je prekvapivé, že štát tak málo podporuje takéto fantastické projekty.

Témou dvadsiateho ročníka CE ZA AR je #zelenaprearchitekturu. Boli pre Vás ako porotkyňu téma udržateľnosti a environmentálne aspekty diela kritériom ich hodnotenia?

ROZHOVORY

You travelled across the whole of Slovakia. What left you with the strongest impression?

TBV I realised that good architecture is not only concentrated in large cities but is made all across Slovakia. It is almost always the result of an optimal tender, client, and architect. What engaged my attention in Slovakia is the intensive connection of these two entities – thanks to their engagement, architects become friends of clients, and thus are able to react to their needs very sensitively through a highly personal contact. I liked the diversity of architects, the increasing independence in morphology and the inventiveness of solutions and materials. After two years in CE ZA AR’s jury, I can even see a certain distinctiveness of the “Slovak” style.

And I like it!

On the other hand, we have seen some negative trends too, which makes me very sad.

The situation in Demänovská dolina is unforgivable! How can one of the most spectacular valleys transform into a Disneyland of megalomania and bad taste so quickly? I know that the root of the problem does not lie with the architects, but unfortunately, in Slovakia, there are also architects who will gladly take part in this.

And unfortunately, I have also noticed that this is not only happening in Demänovská dolina. I was left with a contradictory impression after visiting Machnáč in Trenčianske Teplice. On the one hand, we have seen a tremendous engagement of people trying to save this gem of functionalist architecture, and on the other, it is almost unbelievable for me that so many years after the times of wild privatisation in Slovakia, the state has so little room for action. In front of our very eyes, a cultural heritage site of European importance is falling into ruin. Unforgivable!

After this deeply negative experience, we found ourselves at the Uhrovec castle. Charming!

A group of enthusiasts with minimal funds but with immense determination and professionalism is turning sand into gold. It was like in a fairy tale. In this case, the modesty and enthusiasm of the architect and the people around him was extremely obvious. The architect’s work was not only wonderfully professional, but it also became his mission, a higher base, optima forma of our profession. And it is again surprising that the state supports this kind of wonderful projects so little.

The topic of CE ZA AR’s 20th edition is #greenforarchitecture.

Were the topics of sustainability and environmental aspects part of the criteria you as a juror used to assess the projects?

Q/A

TBV Pre mňa určite. Pôsobím v zahraničí a udržateľnosť, energetická nenáročnosť, udržateľná materialita a posledné roky už aj cirkularita sú neodmysliteľnou súčasťou tvorby.

Aj na univerzite učíme študentov, že udržateľnosť architektúry nie je niečo, čo sa neskôr pridá, ale už samotný koncept musí byť v súlade s udržateľnosťou alebo ňou čiastočne dokonca diktovaný.

Tento prístup je už tak neodmysliteľný, že často vedie k úplne novým archetypom.

Na Slovenku som si, aspoň v rámci CE ZA AR, takéto silné prepojenie zatiaľ nevšimla. Len v menšej miere, ale o to sympatickejšie, napríklad pri prestavbe storočného humna na rodinný dom vo Veličnej. Aj tu vznikol nový archetyp domu v dome. Páčilo sa mi, že v tomto prípade nešlo o prázdne slová o udržateľnosti, ale o skutočne úprimný, vynaliezavý, „no nonsense“ prístup v harmónii s lokálnymi podmienkami a životným štýlom klienta.

Na druhej strane, väčšina objektov už mala udržateľnú technickú infraštruktúru, rekuperácia sa stala novým štandardom. Myslím, že pri vynaliezavosti prístupu slovenských architektov je len otázkou času, kedy udržateľnosť bude čitateľná aj v architektonickom koncepte.

TBV For me definitely. I work abroad, and sustainability, energy efficiency, sustainable materials, and over the last years also circularity, are indispensable for an architect’s work. Even at university, we teach students that sustainability is not something that can be added later; the concept itself has to be in line with sustainability or even be partially determined by it. This approach has become so essential that it often leads to completely new archetypes.

I have not yet noticed such a strong connection in Slovakia, at least not within CE ZA AR. One of the few exceptions was the conversion of a century-old barn into a family house in Veličná – it may have been applied to a lower extent, but it is all the more likeable. This also gave rise to a new archetype of a house within a house. I liked that in this case, there were no empty words about sustainability, but really an honest, inventive, no-nonsense approach in harmony with local conditions and the client’s lifestyle.

On the other hand, most of the objects already had sustainable technical infrastructure and heat recuperation became a new standard. I think that given the inventiveness in the approaches of Slovak architects, it just a matter of time when sustainability becomes transparent already in the architectural concept.

Tento rok bolo pri nominovaných dielach výrazne čitateľné osobné nasadenie architektov. Myslíte si, že osobná angažovanosť architektov je výnimočnou udalosťou tohto ročníka alebo sa jedná o prejav hlbšej transformácie povolania architekt?

TBV Rozmýšľam, či sa jedná o proces transformácie povolania architekta alebo ide možno skôr o návrat k podstate našej profesie.

Keď sa pozrieme do minulosti, prikláňam sa skôr k druhej možnosti. Ak je to naozaj tak, potom ide o hodnotný trend, ktorý aj širšia spoločnosť bude, dúfam, vedieť oceniť.

Tu vidím aj istú výhodu Slovenska oproti zabehnutému Západu. Nie všetko je už inštitucionalizované a nie všetko funguje dobre. Architekt môže možno ľahšie vstúpiť do viacerých lakún, dier v systéme a dať im zmysel.

Výnimočným momentom je, že sa medzi nomináciami objavila aj novostavba školy, ktorá je však výsledkom iniciatívy súkromného investora. Môže z príkladu ZŠ Guliver v Banskej Štiavnici čerpať inšpiráciu pre revitalizáciu školských stavieb na Slovensku aj verejný sektor?

This year, a significant personal engagement of architects was visible in the nominated projects. Do you think that the personal engagement of architects is a unique characteristic of this year’s edition, or is it a representation of a deeper transformation of the occupation?

TBV I am thinking whether this is a process of transforming the occupation of an architect or rather a return to the nature of our profession. If we look to the past, I would choose the latter. If this is really the case then it is a valuable trend, and I hope the wider society will be able to appreciate it.

This is where I see a certain advantage of Slovakia compared to the already routine ways of the West. Not everything has been institutionalised and not everything works well. Thus, the architect can interfere with more gaps in the system and give them a meaning.

It is extraordinary that this year’s nominations also include a new school, which was built at the initiative of a private investor. Can the example of the Guliver Primary School in Banská Štiavnica serve as

TBV Myslím si, že musí. ZŠ Guliver nastavuje nielen architektúrou, ale aj spôsobom tvorby zrkadlo verejnému sektoru. Jedná sa nepochybne o architektonicky výnimočne zvládnutý projekt, ale priznajme si tiež, že reprezentuje aj viac-menej štandard školských stavieb na Západe (vysoko nadštandardné vybavenie vynímajúc). ZŠ Guliver by mohla stáť aj kdekoľvek v Holandsku, Rakúsku, Francúzsku alebo Fínsku.

Nemyslím si, že pri inšpirácii by sme mali hovoriť o štandarde vybavenia školy. Bazén pre základné školy je aj na západe výnimočný, v Holandsku napríklad chýba často i telocvičňa, o vonkajšom športovisku ani nehovoriac. Inšpiráciou by mala byť filozofia prístupu, kde v centre stojí dieťa a jeho potreby, diferencované podľa vekových kategórií. Kde architektúra vytvára optimálny priestor pre slobodný vývoj dieťaťa a zároveň vytvára podmienky pre rovnakú osvietenú pedagogickú víziu. Tento prístup bol v ZŠ Guliver výrazne čitateľný a je určite nasledovaniahodný.

(Aj čo sa týka pedagogickej vízie!) Isté je, že prostriedky, ktoré štát uvoľní na revitalizáciu škôl, budú v porovnaní s rozpočtom ZŠ Guliver obmedzené. O to dôležitejšie je hľadať inšpiráciu v esencii.

Posledné roky, a nebolo tomu inak ani v 20. ročníku ceny, sa v kategórii bytové domy nenachádza veľa nominácií. Je bytová výstavba v kríze?

TBV Toto je veľmi dôležitá téma. Neviem či hovoriť o kríze, ale všimla som si dve menej pozitívne tendencie. Ťažké je však povedať, nakoľko majú individuálni architekti možnosť čeliť negatívam izolovane od širšieho spoločenského kontextu. Čo sa týka výstavby lacnejších nájomných domov, myslím si, že častým problémom je konzervatívnosť investora, ako aj verejnosti. Architektom potom chýba priestor pri takýchto nízkonákladových projektoch prísť s naozaj inovatívnymi, úspornými, „smart” riešeniami už pri tvorbe konceptu. Keďže sa, samozrejme, treba zmestiť do rozpočtu, „lacnosť“ prevedenia sa potom premieta do stiesnených pôdorysov a anonymných fasád s malými oknami a nenápaditou materialitou.

Videli sme však aj perfektne prevedené bytovky, s inovatívnou typológiou a výbornými pôdorysmi, plné svetla a súkromia. Ľudia tu však žijú v zlatej klietke, každý blok za vlastným plotom, bez akéhokoľvek kontextu, kde by sa ľudia mohli aspoň náhodne stretnúť, kde by sa deti mohli samy vonku hrať. Hovoríme hlavne o nových lukratívnych štvrtiach, kde akoby úplne absentovalo územné plánovanie a hlavne dlhodobá vízia udržateľného rastu mesta. Nielenže chýbajú adekvátne prístupové komunikácie, ale hlavne akákoľvek vybavenosť a verejný priestor. Deti musia voziť do školy a zo školy rodičia, nakupovať sa dá len autom, čo zase nepriamo napomáha rastu stále nových nákupných centier a vymieraniu

an inspiration for the revitalisation of school buildings in Slovakia for the public sector and the state?

TBV I think it must. The Guliver primary school holds up a mirror to the public sector not only in its architecture but also the way it was created. This is most certainly an architecturally exquisite project, but we should also acknowledge that it more-or-less represents the standard of school buildings in the West (with the exception of the very high standard of equipment). The Guliver primary school could be built anywhere in the Netherlands, Austria, France, or Finland. I do not think that we should talk about the standard of equipment when finding things for inspiration. A swimming pool in a school is rare also in the West; in the Netherlands, for instance, the school often lacks a gym, not even mentioning an outdoor sports ground. What should provide inspiration is the philosophy of the approach with the children and their needs, differentiated by age groups, in the centre. This is an approach in where architecture provides an optimal environment for the free development of children, and also creates conditions for the same enlightened teaching vision. This approach was extremely visible in the Guliver primary school and is no doubt worth following (also in terms of the teaching vision). It is certain that funds allocated for the revitalisation of schools by the state will be limited compared to the budget of the Guliver primary school. This makes it even more important to look for inspiration in its essence.

Over the last years, including in the 20th edition of the prize, there have not been many nominations in the residential houses category. Is residential construction facing a crisis?

TBV This is an extremely important topic. I do not know whether we can talk about a crisis, but I have noticed two less positive trends. It is hard to say to what extent individual architects can face the negatives in isolation from the wider social context.

As regards the construction of cheaper rented residential housing, a frequent problem is the conservativeness of the investor and the public.

So in the case of these low-cost projects, architects lack the space to come up with really innovative, cost-saving, and smart solutions already when creating the concept. Because they have to fit into the budget of course, the cheapness of the execution is then reflected in confined layouts and anonymous façades with small windows and low-key materials.

We have also seen residential houses executed exquisitely, with an innovative typology and outstanding layouts, full of light and privacy. But people there live in a golden cage, each block behind its own fence, without any context giving people the chance to bump into each other or for children to play outside by themselves.

parteru klasického uličného mesta. Najviac používaný vstup do domu je garáž, často s výťahom priamo do bytu. Spoločný exteriérový priestor takmer neexistuje, auto, väčšinou dve, je nevyhnutnosť. Čo to bude znamenať pre deti a mládež, ktoré tu vyrastajú bez akejkoľvek nezávislosti pohybu od svojich rodičov, ťažko povedať.

Pri hodnotení diel sa ako problémy opakovane spomínali urbanizmus a územné plánovanie. Akú správu o urbanizme podáva tohtoročný CE ZA AR? TBV Tejto témy som sa dotkla už pri predchádzajúcej otázke. Nie som dostatočne v obraze, čo všetko tu je alebo sa pripravuje v oblasti územného plánovania, ale na základe toho, čo sme videli, mám pocit, akoby v územnom plánovaní absentovala dlhodobá vízia udržateľného rastu miest. To však nie je ani tak záležitosťou architektov, ale je to hlavne spoločensko-politická otázka, akým smerom sa chceme uberať. Myslím si, že od revolúcie už ubehlo dosť rokov, aby sme ako spoločnosť, okrem iného aj nástrojmi územného plánovania, vedeli povedať „... a dosť!“ živelnosti developerského rozvoja a aby sme si ako spoločnosť diktovali podmienky a rezervovali prostriedky pre infraštruktúru a občiansku vybavenosť.

Komunikujú dostatočne nominované diela so súčasnými globálnymi témami architektúry?

TBV Čo sa týka nominácií, sú tu projekty, ktoré sa dotýkajú globálnych tém, ale všeobecne na Slovensku toto prepojenie nevidím až také výrazné.

Hlavne témy udržateľnosti a cirkularity ako zdroje inšpirácie pre architektov hrajú v zahraničí prím.

Okrem domu vo Veličnej alebo hradu Uhrovec sme veľa kreativity v tejto oblasti nevideli. Ďalšou významnou témou je kvalitné dostupné bývanie aj pre ekonomicky slabšie vrstvy. Máme tu nomináciu Bytových domov Kamence, projekt, ktorý vyšiel z architektonickej súťaže, s hodnotným riešením parteru, ktorý však tiež zápasí s vyššie spomínanými úskaliami v bytovej výstavbe. A napokon už dlhoročná téma transformácie. Teším sa, že Cvernovku sa podarilo zachrániť, ale dúfam, že sa v parteri nielen priestorovo, ale aj kultúrnou náplňou skutočne otvorí mestu a širokej verejnosti.

Kategória exteriér by mala primárne prezentovať kvalitné krajinárske riešenia vrátane kvalitných parkových úprav. Počet prihlásených diel spadajúcich pod kategóriu exteriér je dlhodobo nízky a aj tento ročník prezentuje v nomináciách skôr objekty v exteriéri. Ako napomôcť

We are talking mainly about new lucrative neighbourhoods, which seem to completely lack urban planning and especially a long-term vision of a sustainable urban growth. Not only are these projects missing adequate access roads, but also any amenities and public spaces. Parents have to drive kids to school and collect them afterwards, and they can only go shopping by car, which in turn helps the development of new shopping centres and the extinction of the parterre of the traditional urban streets. The most frequently used entrance into the house is a garage, often with a lift directly into the flat. A common exterior space is virtually non-existent, and a car, and usually two, is indispensable. What this will mean for children and young people growing up here without any independence from their parents in terms of movement, is hard to say.

The assessments of projects often mentioned problems with urbanism and land planning. What is the message about urbanism that this year’s CE ZA AR conveys?

TBV I have already touched upon this in the previous question. I do not have enough knowledge about what there is and what is being prepared in terms of land-use planning, but based on what we have seen, I feel that it is missing a long-term vision of sustainable urban growth. This, however, is not really the problem of architects; it is more of a social and political topic on where we want to go next. I think that enough years have passed since the revolution for us as the society (using the tools of land-use planning besides other things) to be able to say “enough” to unrestrained developer activities and to dictate the conditions and reserve funds for infrastructure and facilities.

Do the nominated projects communicate enough with the current global topics of architecture?

TBV As regards nominations, there are projects touching upon global topics, but I think that generally in Slovakia, this connection is not so significant.

Especially the topics of sustainability and circularity as the source of inspiration for architects play a key role abroad. We have not seen a lot of creativity in this field, besides the house in Veličná and the Uhrovec castle.

Another important topic is high-quality and affordable housing for economically weaker classes. We have a nomination for the Kamence residential houses, a project which arose as a result of an architectural competition, with a valuable solution of the parterre, but it is also struggling with the above-mentioned pitfalls of residential construction. And finally, the long-standing topic of transformation.

k rozvoju a širšiemu uplatneniu krajinnej architektúry?

TBV Aj tu si myslím, že hlavným problémom je absencia ambície a prostriedkov, ale aj nevedomosť v samosprávach miest a vyšších územných celkov. V posledných rokoch sme videli viacero vynikajúcich realizácií. Osveta, publicita a propagácia, samozrejme, pomôžu, ale treba aj predkladať kvalitné zámery a dobre využívať európske fondy, ktoré v tejto oblasti evidentne sú.

Plán obnovy a stability prináša pre Slovensko veľký objem finančných prostriedkov, ktoré by mohli prispieť k výraznému nárastu kvality života v krajine. Kde vidíte potenciál, výzvy a kde, naopak, riziká, ktoré tieto finančné prostriedky môžu slovenskej architektúre priniesť?

TBV Bolo by úžasné, keby sa tieto prostriedky podarilo investovať systémovo v súlade s progresívnou víziou rozvoja Slovenska. V predvoji je veľká úloha pre samosprávy miest a obcí spolu s architektmi aktualizovať, a kde je to potrebné, aj prehodnotiť a doplniť územné plány. Časť finančných prostriedkov treba rezervovať a veľkoryso a dlhodobo investovať do verejného priestoru, zelene, občianskej vybavenosti a škôl.

Na základe ambicióznych kritérií potom treba vypisovať súťaže architektov a aj investorov.

A vyberať najlepšie riešenia hlavne podľa kritéria kvality predkladaných riešení.

Rada by som bola, keby sa časť prostriedkov rezervovala aj na revitalizáciu socialistických sídlisk. Toto neveselé dedičstvo socializmu je, žiaľ, naprieč Slovenskom všadeprítomné. Je to dôležitá výzva spoločnosti zaujať stanovisko, čo s tým. A tu vidím obrovské možnosti využitia kreatívneho potenciálu architektov, ale i krajinárov.

I am glad that the rescue of Cvernovka has been successful, but I hope that its parterre will really open up to the city and the wide public not only in terms of space, but also its cultural programme.

The exterior category should primarily present high-quality landscaping solutions as well as outstanding park designs. The number of entries in the exterior category has long been low, and as usual, this year’s nominations rather include objects in the exterior. How can we help to develop landscape architecture and apply it more widely?

TBV I think that in this case too, the main problem is the lack of ambition and funds, but also the lack of awareness in the local governments of cities and self-governing regions. Over the last years, we have seen multiple outstanding projects. Of course, awareness raising, publicity and promotion help but it is also necessary to submit high-quality projects and better use EU funds, which are obviously available in this area.

The Recovery and Resilience Facility will bring a generous sum of funds to Slovakia, and they could contribute to a significant improvement of the quality of life in the country. What are the potential benefits, challenges, and risks that these funds can bring for Slovak architecture?

TBV It would be great if these funds could be invested systematically in line with a progressive vision of Slovakia’s development.

Nehovorím o kozmetických úpravách, ale o veľkorysých riešeniach so zhodnocovaním investícií.

Treba vypisovať ideové súťaže, zadávať to ako ateliérové úlohy práve študentom, naštartovať spoločenskú diskusiu na túto tému, zainteresovať developerov a finančne podporiť zmysluplné iniciatívy. Vo svete je mnoho skvelých príkladov a aj u nás aspoň zopár. A nezávisle od tohto musí samospráva investovať do parteru. Potreba dobrých urbanisticko-krajinárskych riešení v kontexte postkomunistických sídlisk je evidentná.

Najväčším rizikom je, že všetko pôjde po starom. Že samosprávy nedokážu finančné prostriedky presmerovať do verejného sektoru a ak sa tak nestane na základe dlhodobej vízie o udržateľnej transformácii a raste miest, patrične rozpracovanej v územnom pláne.

Porota sa rozhodla reagovať aj na dielo, ktoré nebolo súčasťou hodnotenia v rámci CE ZA AR. Ako vnímate tému záchrany chátrajúcej kultúrnej pamiatky Liečebného domu Machnáč v Trenčianskych Tepliciach?

TBV Iniciatíva za záchranu Machnáča presahuje významom rámec Slovenska.

V Európe je len niekoľko takto kvalitných a natoľko zachovalo štýlovo čistých klenotov funkcionalistickej architektúry. To, že sa nám Machnáč doslova pred našimi očami rozpadá a nie je v moci štátu urobiť tomu koniec, je takmer neuveriteľné. Dúfam, že aj v rámci publicity ocenenia CE ZA AR sa bude tejto téme venovať osobitný priestor. Rastúci záujem verejnosti o architektúru veci nepochybne pomôže.

of cities and municipalities is to update and, if necessary, reassess and complete master plans in cooperation with architects. A proportion of the funds should be reserved and generously invested over the long term into public spaces, greenery, public amenities, and schools. Then it will be necessary to organise competitions for architects and investors based on ambitious criteria. And to select the best solutions mainly on the basis of quality criteria of the submitted projects.

I would be glad if a proportion of the funds could also be reserved for the revitalisation of socialist housing estates. This unhappy heritage of socialism is, unfortunately, omnipresent throughout Slovakia. This is an important challenge for the society to take a stand on what to do with it. And this is where I see tremendous opportunities for the use of the creative potential of architects and landscape architects. I am not talking about cosmetic adjustments but about generous solutions raising the value of investments. We need to organise ideas competitions, assign this as seminar tasks to students, start a public discussion about this topic, include developers and financially support sensible initiatives. There are many wonderful examples in the world and there are at least some in Slovakia too. And independently of that, the local government has to invest into the parterre. The need of good urbanistic and landscaping solutions in the context of the post-communist housing estates is evident.

The biggest risk is that everything will remain as it used to be. That local governments will not be able to direct the funds into the public sector, and that this does not happen based on a long-term vision of a sustainable city transformation and growth, duly elaborated on in the master plan.

The Jury also decided to make a statement about a project which was not a part of the evaluations within CE ZA AR. What do you think about the topic of preserving the deteriorating cultural site of the Machnáč curative house in Trenčianske Teplice?

TBV The importance of the initiative to save Machnáč extends beyond Slovakia. There are only a few jewels of functionalist architecture in Europe reaching this quality, state of preservation and stylistic purity. The fact that Machnáč is falling apart literally in front of our very eyes, and it is not in the state’s power to change it, is almost unbelievable.

I hope that some space will be dedicated to this issue within the publicity of the CE ZA AR Award. The rising interest of the public in architecture will certainly help this.

Prešli ste cestu naprieč celým Slovenskom. Čo vo Vás zanechalo najsilnejší dojem?

JC Obávam sa, že mi organizátori pred cestou nasadili ružové okuliare, pretože najsilnejší dojem mám z neuveriteľne krásnej slovenskej krajiny a bujnej prírody. A tiež mám pocit, že vaša krajina v posledných rokoch celkovo zbohatla.

Skrátka, moje dojmy sú veľmi pozitívne.

Témou dvadsiateho ročníka CE ZA AR je #zelenaprearchitekturu. Boli pre Vás ako pre porotcu téma udržateľnosti a environmentálne aspekty diel kritériom ich hodnotenia?

JC Téma udržateľnosti pre nás určite bola hľadiskom, aj keď je pravda, že na rozdiel od západoeurópskych krajín sú tieto kritériá pre architektov a investorov v našich zemepisných šírkach zatiaľ, bohužiaľ, okrajovou témou.

Domnievam sa však, že na vine je predovšetkým „vedenie“ našich krajín, ktoré nás k týmto hľadiskám nedostatočne, vedie. Uvedomme si, že ľudstvo väčšinou nerobí nič z dobrej vôle, ale z donútenia. Tento environmentálny imperatív zatiaľ nerezonuje tak, ako by už dávno mal vzhľadom na neustále sa zhoršujúcu kondíciu našej planéty!

You travelled across the whole of Slovakia. What left you with the strongest impression?

JC I am afraid that the organisers gave me a pair of rose-coloured glasses before the journey, because I was left with the strongest impression by the unbelievably beautiful Slovak landscape and wild nature. And I also get the feeling that your country got richer overall over the last few years. So in short, my impression is positive.

The topic of CE ZA AR’s 20th edition is #greenforarchitecture.

Were the topics of sustainability and environmental aspects part of the criteria you as a juror used to assess the projects?

JC The sustainability topic was no doubt one of the criteria, although I have to say that in contrast to West European countries, these criteria are unfortunately still a marginal topic for architects and investors in these latitudes. I think that the leadership of our countries is mainly to blame, as they do not “lead” us towards these subjects. We have to understand that humanity only rarely does something based on its goodwill, it has to be forced to do so. For now, this environmental imperative does not resonate as loudly as it should have for a long time, taking into account the ever-worsening condition of our planet.

JC Tento moment som si silno uvedomoval najmä pri nominovaných dielach. Bol by som rád, keby sme ako porota veľmi podčiarkli osobnú angažovanosť architektov a autorov, lebo tohtoročné predstavené výsledky boli dosiahnuté hlavne vďaka tomuto fenoménu. Títo autori pochopili, že jedine svojím maximálnym nasadením, a nielen počas projekčnej fázy, ale hlavne v priebehu realizácie diela, dosiahnu požadovaný výsledok. Tento spôsob práce architekta bol pritom v minulosti samozrejmosťou.

JC I strongly felt this especially in the case of the nominated projects. I would be glad if we as jury highlighted the personal engagement of architects, as this year’s results were achieved especially thanks to this phenomenon. The authors understood that the desired result can be obtained only through their maximum engagement, not only in the project phase but also during execution. This way of working used to be natural for architects in the past.

It is extraordinary that this year’s nominations also include a new school, which was built at the initiative of a private investor. Can the example of the Guliver Primary School in Banská Štiavnica serve as an inspiration for the revitalisation of school buildings in Slovakia for the public sector and the state?

JC Ja dúfam, že škola Guliver nastavuje vysokú latku verejnému aj súkromnému školstvu v celom stredoeurópskom priestore.

A to nielen z hľadiska kvality architektonického návrhu, ale aj z hľadiska konceptu výučby. Škola Guliver je v podstate novodobý „gesamtkunstwerk“, ktorého cieľom nie je len komplexnosť samotného diela, ale aj snaha o zvýšenie úrovne výučby a výchovy žiakov, čo je tou najdôležitejšou úlohou.

JC I hope that the Guliver school will set a high-level example for public and private education in the whole Central European area.

And not only as regards the quality of the architectural design, but also in terms of the teaching concept. Guliver school is basically a modern “Gesamtkunstwerk”, and its goal is not only the complexity of the work of art itself, but also the endeavour to improve the education of pupils, which is the most important task.

Posledné roky, a nebolo tomu inak ani v 20. ročníku ceny, sa v kategórii bytové domy nenachádza veľa nominácií. Je bytová výstavba v kríze?

Over the last years, including in the 20th edition of the prize, there have not been many nominations in the residential houses category. Is residential construction facing a crisis?

JC Krízu kvality bytovej výstavby spôsobuje niekoľko paralelných javov. Jedným je dlhodobá nenásytnosť trhu, ako na Slovensku, tak aj v Česku, a zároveň stále pomerne nízke nároky zákazníkov v tomto sektore. To vo svojom dôsledku vedie k tomu, že developeri nie sú v zdravom konkurenčnom tlaku a nevytvárajú architektom adekvátny priestor na kvalitnú tvorbu.

Znie to možno ako ospravedlnenie architektov, ale obávam sa, že tieto faktory, bohužiaľ, stoja v pozadí tejto situácie.

JC The crisis in the quality of residential construction is caused by several parallel phenomena. One of them is the long-standing greed of the market both in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, as well as the still relatively low demands of clients in this sector. As a result, this leads to the fact that developers do not face a healthy competitive pressure, and they do not make adequate room for architects to work on high-quality designs.

This may sound like architects’ excuse, but I am afraid that these factors are behind this situation.

Pri hodnotení diel sa ako problémy opakovane spomínali urbanizmus a územné plánovanie. Akú správu o urbanizme podáva tohtoročný CE ZA AR?

The assessments of projects often mentioned problems with urbanism and land planning. What is the message about urbanism that this year’s CE ZA AR conveys?

Urbanizmus je v postkomunistických krajinách, bohužiaľ, najpomalšie sa vyvíjajúcim odborom, a pritom má zároveň, paradoxne, najfatálnejší vplyv na tvorbu miest. Zlý dom možno zbúrať a nahradiť lepším, ale uličná sieť a dimenzie verejných priestorov urbanista fixuje na celé stáročia dopredu. Na projektoch hodnotených nielen na CE ZA AR-ovi, ale aj na študentskom GP je viditeľná slabina urbanizmu už aj vo vedení študentov na školách.

Komunikujú nominované diela dostatočne so súčasnými globálnymi témami architektúry?

JC Tých globálnych tém je dnes v architektúre toľko, že je ťažké odpovedať na túto otázku. Ale z hľadiska zmieňovanej udržateľnosti, ktorú ja osobne považujem za najdôležitejšiu súčasnú globálnu tému, bol tej komunikácie nominovaných diel stále nedostatok.

JC Unfortunately, in post-communist countries, urbanism as a field has been developing at the slowest rate, while, paradoxically, it has the most significant influence on town formation. A bad house can be demolished and replaced with a better one, but the street network and dimensions of public spaces are fixed by the urbanist for centuries to come. Projects evaluated not only as a part of CE ZA AR, but also within a student GP make it obvious that urbanism is a weakness already in the instruction of students at universities.

Do the nominated projects communicate enough with the current global topics of architecture?

Nowadays, there is such a large number of these global topics in architecture that it is hard to answer this question. But if we talk about the already mentioned sustainability, which I personally consider to be the most important global topic, the communication of the nominated projects in this regard is still insufficient.

JC Tento nedostatok je jednoznačne spôsobený najmä nezáujmom predstaviteľov miest a obcí o skvalitnenie verejných priestorov.

Možno by pomohol verejný apel SKA na starostov a primátorov vzhľadom na organizovanie verejných súťaží. Ide o veľmi pomalý a tŕnistý proces, ale výsledky majú významný vplyv na kultivovanie celej spoločnosti.

JC This weakness is most certainly caused especially by the lack of interest of the representatives of cities and municipalities in improving public spaces. Perhaps a public call of the Chamber directed at mayors concerning the

Majú krajinársko-urbanistické a sadovnícke riešenia potenciál byť nástrojom environmentálne zodpovedného prístupu v architektúre?

JC Potenciál majú len vtedy, ak sú zasadené do komplexného riešenia spolu s architektonickým návrhom. Domy a priestor medzi nimi musia byť riešené vo vzájomnej interakcii.

Plán obnovy a stability prináša pre Slovensko veľký objem finančných prostriedkov, ktoré by mohli prispieť k výraznému nárastu kvality života v krajine. Kde vidíte potenciál, výzvy a, naopak, riziká, ktoré tieto finančné prostriedky môžu pre slovenskú architektúru priniesť? Úspech takýchto plánov a programov závisí od kvality a transparentnosti pravidiel a od vyspelosti tých, ktorí s týmto programom budú nakladať. Samotná architektúra bude profitovať z rôznych typov súťaží, ktoré by mali byť cielené na dôležité aspekty riešenia území a regiónov.

Porota sa rozhodla reagovať aj na dielo, ktoré nebolo súčasťou hodnotenia v rámci CE ZA AR-a.

Ako vnímate tému záchrany chátrajúcej kultúrnej pamiatky Liečebného domu Machnáč v Trenčianskych Tepliciach?

JC Je veľmi smutné, že ako porota sme sa zaoberali hodnotením novostavieb, pričom existujúci a už v minulom storočí realizovaný skvost, akým je Liečebný dom Machnáč od architekta Jaromíra Krejcara, je deň čo deň väčšou ruinou. Keď ľudské spoločenstvo v danom čase a na danom mieste nie je schopné starať sa o kultúrne dedičstvo, je to výrazom nekultúrnosti toho spoločenstva alebo nefunkčnosti systému toho spoločenstva. V tomto prípade zrejme ide o ten druhý prípad, ale nie je to ospravedlnením, len apelom na jeho nápravu. Rovnakú situáciu možno sledovať aj v Českej republike. Prehlásenie objektu za pamiatku totiž nie je riešenie vzhľadom na obmedzené právomoci tohto zákona.

V prípade domu Machnáč sa zrejme prejavuje aj nezdravý stav slovenského súdnictva.

This is a very slow and difficult process, but its results have a significant impact on cultivating the whole society.

Do landscaping, urbanistic and horticultural solutions have the potential to be a tool of the environmentally responsible approach within architecture?

JC They only have potential if they are set in a complex solution together with an architectural design. Buildings and the space between them have to be dealt with in a mutual interaction.

The Recovery and Resilience Facility will bring a large sum of funds to Slovakia, and they could contribute to a significant improvement of the quality of life in the country. What are the potential benefits, challenges, and risks that these funds can bring for Slovak architecture?

JC The success of such plans and programmes depends on the quality and transparency of rules, as well as on the maturity of those using the programme. Architecture itself will benefit from various types of competitions, which should be directed at important aspects of solutions for various areas and regions.

The Jury also decided to make a statement about a project which was not a part of the evaluations within CE ZA AR. What do you think about the topic of preserving the deteriorating cultural site of the Machnáč curative house in Trenčianske Teplice?

JC It is very sad that we as a jury evaluated new buildings, yet an existing masterpiece built already during the last century, which the Machnáč curative house by architect Jaromír Krejcar definitely is, is falling into ruin more and more every day. When a community of people in a given time and given place is not able to care for its cultural heritage, it is an expression of the uncultured character of that community or of a non-functioning system of that community.

In this case, the latter is probably true, but this is not a justification, rather an appeal to remedy the situation. A similar situation can be observed also in the Czech Republic. Declaring an object for a monument is not the solution, given the restricted powers arising from this legislation. In the case of Machnáč, the unhealthy state of the Slovak justice system is probably also a factor.

BOHUNKA KOKLESOVÁ (SK) Prešli ste cestu naprieč celým Slovenskom, čo vo Vás zanechalo najsilnejší dojem?

BK Krásna krajina, na mnohých miestach ešte nedotknutá rukou človeka.

Veľmi opatrne by som organizovala výstavbu v národných prírodných parkoch. To, čo sa deje v Demänovskej doline, ale aj vo Vysokých Tatrách, považujem za devastáciu prostredia, agresívne developerské akcie a mimoriadne nekvalitná architektúra postavená v agresívnej pozícii voči okolitej prírodnej scenérii. Máme nádhernú krajinu, ale jej veľkosť nám nedovoľuje zahltiť ju nekvalitnou architektúrou a technologickými parkmi. Treba nájsť mieru a jasne určiť zodpovednosť a prešľapy.

Témou dvadsiateho ročníka CE ZA AR je #zelenaprearchitekturu. Boli pre Vás ako porotkyňu téma udržateľnosti a environmentálne aspekty diel kritériom ich hodnotenia?

BK Čiastočne áno. Najmä v prípade bytových a rodinných domov sme si uvedomovali prepojenosť stavieb na okolitú prírodu, záhradu alebo parkovú úpravu. Tiež nás zaujali tie stavby, ktoré sa zaoberali dôslednou materiálovou recykláciou, prípadne uhlíkovou stopou.

Tento rok bolo pri nominovaných dielach výrazne čitateľné osobné nasadenie architektov. Myslíte si, že osobná angažovanosť architektov je výnimočnou udalosťou tohto ročníka alebo sa jedná o prejav hlbšej transformácie povolania architekt?

BK Ja by som to nenazvala „osobnou angažovanosťou“ architekta. Skôr sa podľa mňa mení konštelácia jednotlivých vstupov, ktoré sa na výslednej architektúre podieľajú. Mení sa charakter investorov, ktorí začínajú vnímať kvality dobrej architektúry, architekt dostáva väčší priestor pre svoju tvorbu, stáva sa rovnocenným partnerom pre investora, ale podľa mňa sa menia aj stavebné materiály a technológie, ktoré umožňujú veľkorysejšie poňatie architektúry ako takej.

To všetko nám dáva nádej, že sa v architektúre čosi mení v prospech jej kvality, invenčnosti, ale aj v prospech kvality života ľudí.

Výnimočným momentom je, že sa medzi nomináciami objavila aj novostavba školy, ktorá je však výsledkom iniciatívy súkromného investora. Môže z príkladu ZŠ Guliver v Banskej Štiavnici čerpať

You travelled across the whole of Slovakia. What left you with the strongest impression?

BK A beautiful country, in many places still unspoiled by the human hand. I would be extremely cautious with organising construction in national parks. I think that what is happening in Demänovská dolina but also the High Tatras can only be called a devastation of environment, aggressive developer actions and extremely low-quality architecture built in an aggressive position in relation to the surrounding natural scenery. We have a beautiful country, but its size does not allow us to fill it with low-quality architecture and technological parks. We have to find a balance and clearly determine responsibilities and faults.

The topic of CE ZA AR’s 20th edition is #greenforarchitecture.

Were the topics of sustainability and environmental aspects part of the criteria you as a juror used to assess the projects?

BK Partially yes. Especially in the case of residential and family houses, we appreciated the connection of a given building to the surrounding nature, garden, or park. We were also interested in buildings which dealt with a strict recycling of materials or the carbon footprint.

This year, a significant personal engagement of architects was visible in the nominated projects. Do you think that the personal engagement of architects is a unique characteristic of this year’s edition, or is it a representation of a deeper transformation of the occupation?

BK I wouldn’t call it an architect’s “personal engagement”. I think what we see is rather a change in the constellation of individual inputs that contribute to the resulting architecture.

There is a change in the character of investors, who start to perceive the qualities of good architecture; architects get more room for their designs, and they become an equal partner to the investor, but I think that also the construction materials and technologies are changing, allowing for a more generous architecture as such. All of this gives us hope that there is a change under way in architecture for the benefit of its quality, inventiveness but also for the benefit of people’s quality of life.

inšpiráciu pre revitalizáciu školských stavieb na Slovensku aj verejný sektor?

BK Myslím si, že v tomto prípade sa ukázala veľká priepasť medzi existujúcimi školami na Slovensku a ZŠ Guliver v Banskej Štiavnici.

Táto škola nám ukázala, aké dôležité je venovať čas a priestor deťom, vytvoriť im zázemie, ktoré je samotné pre nich inšpiráciou. Je to škola, ktorá zabezpečuje všestranný rozvoj detí, nielen to nevyhnutné pre vzdelanie. A v tom je obrovský rozdiel medzi touto školou a unifikovanými školami so zatvorenými triedami a jednou telocvičňou. Keď si uvedomíte, že na východnom Slovensku sa deti učia v kontajnerových školách, tak Vám je do plaču. Hovoríte si, kto je na Slovensku dôležitejší ako deti? Nikto. V tomto prípade súkromný sektor ukázal štátu, ako sa to má robiť.

Posledné roky, a nebolo tomu inak ani v 20. ročníku ceny, sa v kategórii bytové domy nenachádza veľa nominácií. Je bytová výstavba v kríze?

BK Je v kríze, a vo veľkej. Na Slovensku vzniká veľa bytových domov, ale ich kvalita je rozporuplná a len ojedinele vznikajú dobré riešenia. Podľa mňa to nie je len otázka financií, ale aj kompetencie architektonických kancelárií.

It is extraordinary that this year’s nominations also include a new school, which was built at the initiative of a private investor. Can the example of the Guliver Primary School in Banská Štiavnica serve as an inspiration for the revitalisation of school buildings in Slovakia for the public sector and the state?

BK I think that in this case, we saw a huge gap between the existing schools in Slovakia and the Guliver Primary School in Banská Štiavnica. This school showed us the importance of dedicating time and space to children and creating an environment which in itself is an inspiration for them. This is a school ensuring an all-round development of children, not only what’s necessary for their education. And this is where the huge difference lies between this school and the uniform schools with closed classrooms and a single gym. When you realise that children in Eastern Slovakia learn in container schools, you feel like crying. You ask yourself, is there anyone more important in Slovakia than children? No one. In this case, the private sector showed the state how it should be done.

Over the last years, including in the 20th edition of the prize, there have not been many nominations in the residential houses category. Is residential construction facing a crisis?

mantineloch a to, čo mňa vždy prekvapí, je aj pomerne „divoká“ fasáda, ktorá je buď rozvlnená, alebo inak výrazne uchopená. Podľa mňa je v takomto prípade architektúra viac spektakulárna, než premýšľaná. Tiež mi chýba „materiálová obyčajnosť“, neviem to lepšie pomenovať, ale niekedy mám pocit, že je Slovensko oblečené do sadrokartónu, vadia mi rôzne tehličkové obklady, obklady, ktoré kadečo imitujú, sú to také dekoratívne „pózy“. Je toho veľa, preto mi to vadí. Kdesi som raz čítala rozhovor Jirka Ševčíka s Alenou Šrámkovou, pýtal sa jej na súčasnú architektúru a či podľa nej nesie nejaké odkazy na funkcionalistickú architektúru. Odpovedala celkom rázne, že nie, pretože základom funkcionalistickej architektúry je „obyčajnosť“. Myslím, že mala pravdu a stojí za to si to pripomenúť.

BK It is indeed facing a crisis, and a big one. There are many residential houses being built in Slovakia, but their quality is inconsistent and good solutions arise only rarely. I think that this is not only the question of money, but also the competence of the architectural offices. Many times, uniform buildings are created without any inventiveness in their designs following the proven limits. And what I am always surprised by are relatively garish façades, which are either rippled or distinctive in another way. I think that in this case, architecture is spectacular rather than reflective. I also miss ordinary materials, I cannot formulate it any better, but sometimes I have the feeling that Slovakia is dressed in plasterboard.

I am disturbed by various kinds of brick-like tiling, cladding imitating something – this is a decorative pretence. There is a lot of it and that is why it disturbs me. Once I read an interview of Jirka Ševčík with Alena Šrámková. He was asking her about contemporary architecture and whether she thought that it has references to functionalist architecture. She answered with a relatively strict no because the foundation of functionalist architecture is ordinariness. I think she was right, and it is worth mentioning again.

BK Je to taký paradox. Na jednej strane sa neustále hovorí o ochrane prírody, o parkových úpravách, o klíme v meste počas horúcich letných mesiacov, existujú grantové výzvy na to určené, ale výsledný rozmer krajinnej architektúry je nevýrazný. Myslím si, že to súvisí s hierarchickým usporiadaním jednotlivých architektonických typológií. Možno sa mýlim, ale akoby krajinná architektúra bola na konci radu, pritom ide podľa mňa o jednu z najzaujímavejších polôh architektonickej práce. Je to práca so živým organizmom, premenlivým podľa ročných období, neustále máte čo rozvíjať a vylepšovať a tiež sa mi na tom páči, že ide o prostredie určené nám všetkým. Parky, záhrady, pasienky, priľahlé mestské lesy, rieky, potoky a jazerá – to sú miesta, kde budeme stále viac a viac tráviť náš čas. A to v každom ročnom období.

Nerozumiem, že sa tomu nevenuje viac pozornosti. Verím však, že sa to bude postupne meniť.

Je dôležité držať túto kategóriu a nevzdávať to predčasne.

Majú krajinársko-urbanistické a sadovnícke riešenia potenciál byť nástrojom pre environmentálne zodpovedný prístup v architektúre?

BK Určite áno. A pôjde do tejto oblasti stále viac a viac peňazí. O tom som presvedčená. Ba dokonca si myslím, že v budúcnosti kvalitná architektúra bude musieť zohľadňovať krajinársko-urbanistické riešenia. Stále viac sa bude analyzovať kvalitná architektúra aj na pozadí prostredia, v ktorom sa nachádza. Je to taký „gesamtkunstwerk“ 21.storočia.

BK Potenciál vidím v záchrane existujúcich stavieb modernistickej architektúry, dať im nový priestor pre ich ďalšiu existenciu, ďalej v environmentálnych a urbanistických riešeniach jednotlivých štvrtí alebo miest a obcí, ale potom aj v kvalitnej architektúre. Veľmi by som si priala, aby konečne začali na Slovensku vznikať nové verejné budovy – krásne a výnimočné po architektonickej stránke: koncertné sály, divadlá, galérie, observatóriá, školy, internáty, ale aj súdy, budovy postavené do služieb občanov, štadióny, atď. Architektúra nesie v sebe potenciál zvyšovať kvalitu života v krajine, môže ovplyvňovať medziľudské vzťahy, spôsoby správania sa ľudí v danom priestore, môže inšpirovať a otvárať nové svety. Vypĺňa náš životný priestor. Ak ho však vypĺňa nekvalitná a unifikovaná architektúra, ktorá je v konflikte s okolitým

BK This is a paradox. On the one hand, we keep talking about nature protection, parks, the climate in the city during hot summer months, there are even grants dedicated to this, but the resulting extent of landscape architecture is insignificant. I think that this is connected to the hierarchical organisation of individual architectural typologies. I might be wrong, but it seems that landscape architecture is at the end of the queue. Yet, I think that it is one of the most interesting kinds of architectural work. Work with a living organism, changing with the seasons.

You always have something to develop further and improve. And what I also like about it is that it deals with spaces that are for us all. Parks, gardens, pastures, city forests, rivers, brooks, and lakes – these are the places where we will be spending more and more of our time. And in each season. I fail to understand why more attention is not being paid to this. But I do believe that it will gradually change. It is important to maintain this category and not to give it up too fast.

Do landscaping, urbanistic and horticultural solutions have the potential to be a tool of the environmentally responsible approach within architecture?

BK Definitely yes. And more and more money will flow into this area. I am convinced about it. I even think that in the future, high-quality architecture will have to account for landscaping and urbanistic solutions. High-quality architecture will be increasingly analysed also on the background of its location. A kind of “Gesamtkunstwerk” of the 21st century.

BK I think the potential is in the rescue of existing modernist buildings, giving them space for their further existence, and also in environmental and urbanistic solutions of individual neighbourhoods or towns and municipalities, but then also in high-quality architecture.

Vtedy sa krajina zdevastuje. To, čo sa deje v Demänovskej doline, je toho dôkazom. Som presvedčená o tom, že bez posvätenia istých politických strán by k takej devastácii nikdy nedošlo.

start to be built in Slovakia, beautiful and unique in terms of architecture: concert halls, theatres, galleries, observatories, schools, dormitories, but also courts, buildings for citizen services, stadiums, etc. Architecture has a potential to increase the quality of life in the country, it can influence interpersonal relations, ways how people behave in a given environment and inspire and open new worlds. It fills our living environment. But if it is filled with low-quality uniform architecture conflicting with the surroundings, we have a problem. It will very much depend on how the government approaches the Recovery Plan, whether it will insist on transparent architectural competitions or whether politicians will distribute money to their related entities. That is when the country will fall to devastation. What is happening in Demänovská dolina is a proof of that. I am convinced that without the approval of certain political parties, no such devastation would happen.

PM Rozdelím svoje najsilnejšie dojmy na tie silne pozitívne a silné v negatívnom slova zmysle.

Tie výnimočne pozitívne sú spojené s návštevou viedenskej predajne Nehera s ohromne kultivovaným spôsobom predaja ohromne kultivovaného sortimentu.

S návštevou hradu Uhrovec, kde snaha o prezentáciu kultúrneho dedičstva spojila dlhoročné neochvejné zanietenie, hlboké znalosti historicko-technického vývoja a precíznu, premyslenú a autentickú realizáciu.

S obhliadkou základnej školy a celého jej areálu v Banskej Štiavnici, kde človek pocítil prítomnosť architektonickej kreativity, novátorskej odvahy a hravosti a obrovské nasadenie architekta v realizačnej fáze.

S autentickou atmosférou bytu 1903 v pavlačovom dome v Trnave, kde z pôdorysu s nepochopiteľnou a racionálneho architekta iritujúcou diagonálou vyvstal vtipne neobkukaný, reálne odôvodnený a zmysluplne na bývanie využiteľný interiér.

Možno až zlosť som pocítil v Demänovskej doline, kde inak sympatické dvojičkové ark-sheltre si za miesto svojho osadenia vybrali existujúci smrekový les a jeho asanáciou odhalili priehľady na ostané okolité obludnosti, ktoré túto dolinu

PM I will categorise my strongest impressions into the strongly positive and the strongly negative ones.

The exceptionally positive impressions include the visit to the Nehera shop in Vienna with a tremendously cultivated way of selling tremendously cultivated range of products; the visit to the Uhrovec castle, where the efforts to present our cultural heritage managed to bring together long-standing unshakeable enthusiasm, deep knowledge of the historical and technical development, and a rigorous, well thought-out and authentic execution; the visit to the primary school and its grounds in Banská Štiavnica, where you feel the presence of architectural creativity, pioneering courage and playfulness, and a tremendous engagement of the architect in the execution stage; the authentic atmosphere of the 1903 flat in the house with courtyard galleries in Trnava, where a layout with an incomprehensible diagonal, irritating for a rational architect, was turned into an interior which is wittily original, realistically justified and reasonably useful for living.

In contrast, I felt perhaps even fury in Demänovská dolina, when I saw twin ark-shelters, otherwise likeable, that chose an existing spruce forest for their setting. By clearing the forest, they uncovered views of the other surrounding monstrosities, insanely devastating the valley.

A na záver – neskonalý smútok z premárnenej príležitosti ma prepadol hľadiac na majestátnu panorámu krajiny okolo Spišského hradu so siluetou Spišskej Kapituly a obnovenej záhrady jej Biskupstva. Kde sa mohla skvieť burleskná krása úžitkovej záhrady s hriadkami cesnakov, cibule, šalátu, kapusty, kalerábu leží nudný trávnik s neprirodzeným šalviovým lemom. Kde mal byť hustý slivkový sad v pravidelnom rastri, boli v diétnom počte roztratené malé stromčeky. Kde nemalo byť nič, čo by bránilo výhľadu na storočné múry biskupstva, boli vložené ambiciózne patvary nepotrebných stolárskych intervencií. Nebol som smutný z toho, že to nebolo tak, ako by sa mi páčilo. Bol som smutný z toho, že to je urobené zle.

PM Určite boli kritériom, a nie zanedbateľným. Veľmi nás napríklad potešilo, keď veľká polyfunkčne využiteľná spevnená plocha školského dvora bola realizovaná v bielom betóne a odvodnená do zberných nádrží, využívaných následne na polievanie zelených plôch areálu.

And finally, I felt infinite sadness from the wasted opportunity, looking at the majestic panorama surrounding the Spiš Castle with the silhouette of Spišská Kapitula and the refurbished garden of the Bishop’s residence. What could have been a space for the lavish beauty of a kitchen garden with beds of garlic, onions, lettuces, cabbages or kohlrabi, is occupied by a boring lawn with an unnatural sage border; what should have been a thick plum orchard with a regular grid, there were only a few scattered small trees; where there was supposed to be nothing obstructing the view of century-old walls of the Bishop’s residence, there were the ambitious pseudo-shapes of unnecessary carpenter interventions. I wasn’t sad that it doesn’t look the way I would have liked. I was sad that it was made badly.

The topic of CE ZA AR’s 20th edition is #greenforarchitecture.

Were the topics of sustainability and environmental aspects part of the criteria you as a juror used to assess the projects?

PM This definitely was a criterion, and not insignificant. For instance, we were pleased when we learnt that a large polyfunctional paved surface in the school grounds was executed in white concrete and drained into collecting tanks used for the irrigation of the green surfaces.

In contrast, what prevented the nomination of the otherwise attractive Nordic hotel concept in

Pri podrobnej prezentácii stavebno-technickej podstaty riešenia však práve téma udržateľnosti a environmentálny aspekt rozhodli o jeho vyradení z nominácií.

Tento rok bolo pri nominovaných dielach výrazne čitateľné osobné nasadenie architektov. Myslíte si, že osobná angažovanosť architektov je výnimočnou udalosťou tohto ročníka alebo sa jedná o prejav hlbšej transformácie povolania architekt?

The jury initially really liked a house of Slovak architects built in Mallorca due to the exquisite design contextually based on local traditional craftsmanship in construction.

However, during the detailed presentation of the structural and technical foundation of the building, the topic of sustainability and environmental aspects was the decisive factor for not including the project in the nominations.

This year, a significant personal engagement of architects was visible in the nominated projects. Do you think that the personal engagement of architects is a unique characteristic of this year’s edition, or is it a representation of a deeper transformation of the occupation?

PM Osobná angažovanosť je atribútom dobrej architektúry vo všeobecnosti, takže si myslím, že nejde o výnimku tohto roka. Kým však minulý rok bolo pri viacerých nomináciách čitateľné, že za vznikom vydarených diel bol pozitívny príbeh súladu spolupráce investora, architekta a realizátora, tohto roku cez tento základný predpoklad presiakol spomínaný moment mimoriadneho osobnostného a profesionálneho vkladu architekta. Hoci sú obe z úplne odlišnej typologickej skupiny, práve tohto spoločného

PM Personal engagement is an attribute of good architecture in general, so I do not think that this is an exception that only applies to this year. While last year, several nominations made it clear that the well-made projects were based on a positive story of cooperation between the investor, the architect and the builder, this year,

menovateľa mali dve pôsobivé stavby – rekonštrukcia hradu Uhrovec a súkromná základná škola Guliver v Banskej Štiavnici.

Okrem sledovania samotnej architektúry bolo zážitkom aj sledovanie výkladu autorov k svojim prácam. Bez zbytočne prikrášlených slov, okázalosti alebo manifestov hovorili vecne o peripetiách tvorivého a realizačného procesu a z každej vety človek cítil, že príčinou tohto jednoznačného úspechu je spomínaný prístup k zadaniu – nad rámec štandardných povinností, zmluvne dohodnutých vzťahov či honorárových limitov. Podobný efekt často badať v prácach, keď si architekti sami sebe stavajú domy – a sami sú sebe návrhármi, investormi aj manažérmi realizácie. Tu však šlo o stavby s verejným dosahom.

Nabáda sa úvaha, či by architekti nemali dostávať viac dôvery, samozrejme aj viac zodpovednosti – možno až za rámec svojej profesie, keď práve v takomto režime sa darí vzniku mimoriadnych diel.

To však vo všeobecnosti nejde – v tom je tento jav výnimočný a zaslúži si to iba výnimočný architekt, ktorého overil výnimočný výkon.

Výnimočným momentom je, že sa medzi nomináciami objavila aj novostavba školy, ktorá je však výsledkom iniciatívy súkromného investora. Môže z príkladu ZŠ Guliver v Banskej Štiavnici čerpať inšpiráciu pre revitalizáciu školských stavieb na Slovensku aj verejný sektor?

PM Realizácia základnej školy je pokračovaním pekného príbehu, započatého predošlou realizáciou súkromnej materskej školy Guliver. Je dôkazom, že kde je vôľa, tam je cesta. Výnimočnosť tohto momentu spočíva ozaj v tom, že typologicky spadá takáto stavba skôr pod kuratelu štátu či samosprávy. Je obrovským výkričníkom kompetentným inštitúciám, ktoré potrebu rozvoja takejto infraštruktúry buď nesprávne vyhodnocujú, alebo rovno zanedbávajú. Vstupujeme do čias, kde zaklínacia formulka „na to nie sú peniaze“ vďaka podpore v rámci EU nebude viac účinnou výhovorkou a nastaví jednoznačné zrkadlo pripravenosti a schopnosti zodpovedných. Výstižnou ironickou ilustráciou je fakt, že pred realizáciou miestne orgány odmietli ponuku súkromného investora na rekonštrukciu existujúcej štátnej školy. Ktovie, ako to vyhodnocujú pri pohľade na brilantne navrhnutý a zrealizovaný nový školský areál?

Posledné roky, a nebolo tomu inak ani v 20. ročníku ceny, sa v kategórii bytové domy nenachádza veľa nominácií. Je bytová výstavba v kríze?

PM Skôr než o kríze hovorme pri aktuálnom neutíchajúcom tempe bytovej výstavby u nás o fenoméne architektúry bytovej výstavby. Byty

it was precisely this extraordinary personal and professional contribution of the architect which seeped through. Two impressive structures, although completely different in their typology, shared this common denominator – the reconstruction of the Uhrovec castle, and the Guliver private primary school in Banská Štiavnica.

Besides seeing the architecture itself, the presentations of the authors about their projects were a great experience, too. No pretty words, showiness, or manifestos, they spoke to the point about the mishaps of the creative and execution process. You could feel from every sentence that the reason of this resounding success was the already mentioned approach to the assignment – extending beyond the standard obligations, contractual relations, or the limits of the fee.

A similar effect can be seen in projects where architects build houses for themselves – they are their own designers, investors, and execution managers. These two, however, were projects influencing the public. It is worth reflecting on the question whether architects should get more trust, and of course also more responsibility – perhaps even beyond the framework of their profession, as it is this arrangement that gives rise to outstanding artworks.

However, this is not generally possible – and it makes this phenomenon unique: only an extraordinary architect verified by an extraordinary performance deserves this.

It is extraordinary that this year’s nominations also include a new school, which was built at the initiative of a private investor. Can the example of the Guliver Primary School in Banská Štiavnica serve as an inspiration for the revitalisation of school buildings in Slovakia for the public sector and the state?

PM The primary school is a sequel to a nice story, which began with building the Guliver private nursery school. It is a proof that when there’s a will, there’s a way. The uniqueness of this indeed lies in the fact that in terms of typology, this kind of building should fall into the responsibility of the state or local government. It is an enormous exclamation mark for the competent institutions, which either incorrectly evaluate or even neglect the development of such infrastructure. We are entering into a time, when the magic formula “we don’t have money for this” will cease to be an effective excuse thanks to the EU support, and this will hold up a mirror to the readiness and skill of those responsible.

A fitting ironic illustration is provided by the fact that before building this school, local authorities turned down the offer of a private investor to refurbish the existing state school. Who knows what they think about it now, looking at the brilliantly designed and executed school grounds?

Over the last years, including in the

sa u nás stavajú takmer výlučne v gescii developerskej. Samozrejme, buďme radi, že developeri tento dlhoročný a takmer nevyčerpateľný zdroj zisku objavili a rozvíjajú ho. Pri absencii iných foriem výstavby (družstevnej, štátnej, nájomnej, súkromnej pre vlastnú potrebu) sa však nemôžeme čudovať, že do hry o architektúru opäť vstúpili zatracované THU (technicko-hospodárske ukazovatele). Tie v konečnom dôsledku ovplyvňujú všetky parametre bývania – veľkosť bytu, veľkosti samotných izieb, úspornosť spoločných priestorov i kvalitu povrchov a fasád.

Sledujúc dispozície súčasnej produkcie sa mi niektoré vidia skutočne na hranici absurdity. „Obľubujem“ hlavne princíp rovnako veľkej obývačky, ku ktorej sa aditívne pridáva jedna, dve, tri izby – a tí neboráci zo 4-izbového bytu sa všetci tiesnia pri televízore v rovnakom priestore, aký ponúka byt 2-izbový. K pandémiou odhalenej kríze uzavretého života rodiny určite prispieva aj jej úzky životný priestor. Často obdivujeme obytné domy zo začiatku minulého storočia – pre veľkorysosť ich dispozícií, konštrukčných výšok aj zrkadiel schodiskových priestorov, plných denného svetla. Aktuálne už manažment projektovej prípravy zbavuje architektov ambície vytvárať naozaj kvalitný priestor bytu aj jeho spoločných častí. Pritom miera stavebných nákladov na ich realizáciu je neúmerne nižšia vzhľadom ku každodennému zážitkovému efektu. To, že medzi nominácie prejde s odretými ušami minimum z pomerne veľkého počtu prihlásených bytoviek, je zrejme výsledkom banálnej produkcie masovej bytovej výstavby, ktorá navyše – pri neustálom nedostatku bytov a ich pomerne jednoduchej dostupnosti – ani nevytvára tlak na vyššiu architektonickú kvalitu. Keď sa však byty stavajú ako predmet biznisu, nemôže to azda ani byť inak. Treba zmeniť paradigmu vzniku bytového domu. Alebo vyzdvihnúť staviteľov, ktorí napriek generovaniu zisku nájdu viac pochopenia aj pre generovanie dobrej architektúry.

Pri hodnotení diel sa ako problémy opakovane spomínali urbanizmus a územné plánovanie. Akú správu o urbanizme podáva tohtoročný CE ZA AR? PM Urbanizmus a územné plánovanie ako kategória v súťaži síce nefigurujú, ale tohto roku vstúpili do hry práve ako fenomén ovplyvňujúci samotné nominované domy. Osobitne v kategórii obytných budov, kde v závere medzi sebou súperili sídliskový štandard a metropolitný luxus. Zvíťazil potenciál súťažou navrhnutého urbanistického konceptu s jasnou čitateľnosťou dobre uchopenej hierarchie životného priestoru s príjemnou koexistenciou verejnej, polosúkromnej a súkromnej zložky nad luxusom vysokej kvality dispozícií aj materiálového riešenia, avšak v nešťastnom urbanistickom kontexte plotmi uzavretých kondomínií, bez kvalitných verejných

20th edition of the prize, there have not been many nominations in the residential houses category. Is residential construction facing a crisis?

PM Rather than talking about a crisis, let us discuss the unrelenting rate of residential construction in our country, and the phenomenon of the architecture of residential construction.

Flats are almost exclusively built by developers.

Of course, we should be glad that developers discovered this long-time and almost unlimited source of profits and develop it further. However, given the absence of other forms of construction (cooperative, state, rental or private for individual needs), it is hardly surprising that the condemned technical and economic indicators are entering the game of architecture again. They ultimately influence all parameters of living – flat size, room sizes, the cost effectiveness of shared spaces, as well as the quality of surfaces and façades. Seeing the layouts of the contemporary production, some of them indeed seem to be on the verge of absurdity. What I especially “like”, is the principle of a uniform living room, with the addition of one, two or three bedrooms – and the unfortunate inhabitants of a three-bedroom flat have to squeeze in front of the TV in a space of the same size as offered by a one-bedroom flat.

The pandemic uncovered the crisis of a closed family life, and this is definitely caused also by the small living space. We often look up to residential houses from the beginning of the last century for the generosity of their layouts, ceiling heights and the windows in the stairways full of daylight. At present, it is already the management of project preparation that strips architects of the ambition to create high-quality flats and shared spaces.

Yet the rate of construction costs for their execution is disproportionately lower compared to the effect on everyday experience. The fact that from the large number of entries of residential houses, a minimum number only just squeezed through to the nominations is likely the result of a banal production of mass residential construction, which, given the persisting shortage of flats and their relatively simple availability, does not create pressure for a higher architectural quality. But when flats are built as a business plan, the situation probably cannot be any different. We need to change the paradigm of how a residential house is created. Or to appreciate those who, despite generating profits, have more understanding for generating good architecture, too.

The assessments of projects often mentioned problems with urbanism and land planning. What is the message about urbanism that this year’s CE ZA AR conveys?

PM Urbanism and land planning as a category are not present in the competition,

prechádzkových trás, exteriérových spoločenských priestorov a vybavenosti. Zlý základ pre finálnu realizáciu širších urbanistických vzťahov položil práve územný plán zóny, v ktorom všetky tieto kategórie kvalitného životného priestoru absentujú. Pri legislatívnej nezáväznosti ani toho mála dobrého, čo v ňom bolo, sa aj dobré domy zrazu ocitnú v autistických vzťahoch k sebe navzájom.

Komunikujú dostatočne nominované diela so súčasnými globálnymi témami architektúry?

PM Dalo by sa povedať, že prierezovo všetkými kategóriami nominované diela globálne témy architektúry reflektujú. Azda najvýstižnejšie

but this year, they entered the game as a phenomenon influencing the nominated projects, especially in the residential buildings category, where ultimately, it was a competition between the standard of housing estates and metropolitan luxuriousness. The winner was the potential of an urbanistic concept that was designed as a part of a competition, with a transparent and well-organised hierarchy of the living space and a pleasant co-existence of public, semi-private and private elements, rather than the luxury of high-quality layouts and material solutions, but in an unfortunate urbanistic context of condominiums closed off using fences, without any high-quality public walking routes, exterior community spaces or facilities. A bad foundation for the final organisation of wider urban

Práve na podčiarknutie potreby pozitívnych príkladov narábania s historicko-kultúrnym dedičstvom (hrad Uhrovec, Vila Lavína), potreby rozvoja klasických typológií v kontexte aktuálneho diskurzu o ich podobe a podmienkach vzniku v celosvetovom kontexte (základná škola Guliver) a potrebe premysleného zhodnotenia existujúceho stavebného fondu a možností jeho transformácie pre nové funkcie (humno vo Veličnej).

Kategória exteriér by mala primárne prezentovať kvalitné krajinárske riešenia vrátane kvalitných parkových úprav. Počet prihlásených diel spadajúcich pod kategóriu exteriér je dlhodobo nízky a aj tento ročník prezentuje v nomináciách skôr objekty v exteriéri. Ako napomôcť k rozvoju a širšiemu uplatneniu krajinnej architektúry?

PM Táto kategória často prispieva k vráskam na čele porotcov, lebo nielen počet, ale aj kvalita prihlasovaných diel býva často kritická. To nie je kritika do radov architektov či krajinných architektov. Je to neblahý obraz úzkeho typologického aj investičného diapazónu, ktorý vo všeobecnosti slovenská stavebná realita ponúka. Táto kategória sa nechce orientovať na záhrady nominovaných rodinných domov či verejných stavieb, lebo tie vníma celistvo ako architektonicko-urbanistické diela. Patria sem autonómne krajinárske počiny, ktoré pre ich minimálny počet alebo úplnú absenciu dopĺňame spomínanými objektami vo verejnom exteriéri.

Pokiaľ však tieto intervencie krajinné prostredie či verejný priestor jednoznačne ovplyvňujú, priam nanovo determinujú, zdá sa nám takéto obsadenie plne relevantné.

Za takejto situácie bolo obrovským sklamaním jednoznačne krajinárske zadanie obnovy Biskupskej záhrady v Spišskej Kapitule. V krajine mimoriadneho súzvuku prírodnej a kultúrno-historickej krásy okolia Spišského Podhradia nebolo možné výkon krajinných architektov a nevhodne ambiciózne vstupy architektov-dizajnérov ani pustiť medzi nominácie. Pre mnohých vysnívané zadanie sa stalo premárnenou príležitosťou.

Napomôcť rozvoju a širšiemu uplatneniu krajinnej architektúry možno neúnavnou propagáciou vydarených realizácií, lebo dobrý príklad otvára oči. Svedčí o tom aj veľký boom vyhodnotených, prebiehajúcich a pripravovaných súťaží, ktorých predmetom je práve krajina, verejné parky a námestia. Verím, že budúce ročníky prinesú pre túto kategóriu bohatú úrodu.

Majú krajinársko-urbanistické a sadovnícke riešenia potenciál byť nástrojom pre environmentálne zodpovedný prístup v architektúre?

Do the nominated projects communicate enough with the current global topics of architecture?

PM We could say that the nominated projects in a cross-section of all categories reflect the global topics of architecture. This is presented most fittingly by the Phenomena of Architecture category, where we included two projects form other categories, too. This was to highlight the need for positive examples of dealing with historical and cultural heritage (Uhrovec castle, Villa Lavína), the need to develop traditional typologies in the context of the current discourse about their appearance and conditions of creation in a global context (Guliver primary school), and the need of a well-thought-out assessment of the existing building stock and the possibilities of its transformation for new functions (the barn in Veličná).

The exterior category should first and foremost present high-quality landscaping solutions as well as outstanding park designs. The number of entries in the exterior category has long been low, and as usual, this year’s nominations rather include objects in the exterior. How can we help to develop landscape architecture and apply it more widely?

PM This category usually troubles jurors, because the number as well as the quality of the entries is critical. This is not a criticism of architects or landscape architects. This is an adverse image of the narrow typological and investment range that the Slovak construction reality offers. This category does not want to focus on the gardens of the nominated family houses or public buildings, as they are perceived together as architectural and urbanistic projects.

This category includes autonomous landscaping projects, but due to their low number or complete absence, we complement them with the mentioned objects set in a public exterior. But if these interventions influence the landscape or the public space, perhaps even determine it in a new way, we feel that this inclusion is fully justified.

Given this situation, what came as a huge disappointment was the landscaping project of renovating the Bishop’s Garden in Spišská Kapitula.

PM Krajinársko-urbanistické a sadovnícke riešenia sú priamym nástrojom prezentácie environmentálne zodpovedného prístupu. Je skvelé, že už nikto nevníma tento segment len ako okrášľovaciu aktivitu, ale ako takmer primárny vstup do diskusie o charaktere urbanizovanej krajiny, nielen z pohľadu udržateľnosti, ale aj komplexnej kvality koncepcie životného prostredia. Či už ide o mierku záhrady rodinného domu, mierku mestského verejného priestoru námestia či parku, ale i mierku novokoncipovanej mestskej štvrte alebo adaptácie existujúceho sídla.

Plán obnovy a stability prináša pre Slovensko veľký objem finančných prostriedkov, ktoré by mohli prispieť k výraznému nárastu kvality života v krajine. Kde vidíte potenciál, výzvy a kde, naopak, riziká, ktoré tieto finančné prostriedky môžu slovenskej architektúre priniesť?

PM Mottom nášho plánu obnovy v oblasti investícií do nehnuteľností je zelená transformácia rodinných domov a pamiatkovo chránených historických verejných budov. Jeden dobre myslený zatepľovací plán obnovy panelových sídlisk sme tu už raz mali a pre pozdvihnutie stavebnej kultúry skončil neslávne. Preto mám obavu, či zatepľovanie existujúceho fondu rodinných domov bude pri zlepšení stavebno-technickej podstaty aj víťazstvom pre architektúru.

Osobitne ostražití by sme mali byť v prípade pamiatkovo chránených budov, kde orientácia na zelenú transformáciu môže paradoxne spôsobiť nedozerné kultúrne škody.

of Spišské Podhradie, it wasn’t possible to even include the performance of the landscape architects and the inappropriately ambitious inputs of architects-designers in the nominations.

A dream assignment for many became a wasted opportunity.

It is possible to help the development and a wider application of landscape architecture by tireless promotion of well-made projects, because a good example is eye-opening. This is proven also by a big boom of finished and ongoing competitions, as well as competitions that are being prepared, the subject of which is landscape, public parks, and squares. I know that future editions will bring a rich harvest in this category.

Do landscaping, urbanistic and horticultural solutions have the potential to be a tool of the environmentally responsible approach within architecture?

PM Landscaping, urbanistic, and horticultural solutions provide a direct tool for the presentation of an environmentally responsible approach. It is wonderful that no one considers this segment only as a decorative activity any more, but as almost a primary input into the discussion about the character of an urbanised landscape not only in terms of sustainability but also a complex quality of the concept of environment, whether it be on the scale of a garden next to a family house, an urban public space of a square or a park, or a newly organised city neighbourhood or the adaptation of an existing settlement.

Podľa Stratégie ochrany pamiatkového fondu je rozvoj komerčného trhu s pamiatkami a prísun súkromného kapitálu jediným spôsobom, ako sa dá pamiatkový fond zachrániť vzhľadom na jeho súčasný stav a obmedzenosť verejného rozpočtu. Súkromný kapitál bude stimulovaný tým, že sa postupne odstráni neprimeraná finančná a byrokratická záťaž vlastníkov pamiatok a stanoví sa nová rovnováha medzi tým, čo štát od vlastníkov pamiatok vyžaduje a čo im ponúka ako kompenzáciu.

Pevne verím, že v pláne obnovy nepôjde o hurá systém preinvestovania zverených prostriedkov v nastavených časových limitoch, ale o ich premyslené a kultivované zhodnotenie.

Porota sa rozhodla reagovať aj na dielo, ktoré nebolo súčasťou hodnotenia v rámci CE ZA AR. Ako vnímate tému záchrany chátrajúcej kultúrnej pamiatky Liečebného domu Machnáč v Trenčianskych Tepliciach?

PM Existuje viac príkladov skvelého narábania s objektami so štatútom národnej kultúrnej pamiatky. Aj v tohtoročnej súťaži CE ZA AR sme mali hneď dva príklady. Bohužiaľ, oveľa viac je tých, kde unikátne architektonické diela ostávajú vinou špekulatívneho nákupu v stave ruiny a nevhodným prístupom k ich ochrane alebo jej úplnou absenciou im hrozí fyzický kolaps a zánik hodnôt, pre ktoré sa pamiatkami stali. V lepšom prípade prichádza spoločnosť výlukou takýchto stavieb na dlhé desaťročia o možnosť ich užívania. Liečebný dom Machnáč je v súkromných rukách. Zdalo by sa, že to pre pamiatku môže byť bonus, odpadáva obohratá mantra štátnej ochrany o nedostatku finančných prostriedkov. Nie je však tomu tak.

Aktuálny majiteľ Machnáča nie je starostlivý vlastník a k objektu sa správa macošsky.

Potvrdzuje tak štatistickú hodnotu o najvyššom dlhu voči obnove nehnuteľných pamiatok práve zo strany súkromných majiteľov nehnuteľností.

Vlastníctvo pamiatky preňho zjavne nie je otázkou prestíže, ale iba biznisového kalkulu. Hoci sa pod tlakom reálnej možnosti vyvlastnenia rozhýbal k aktivite, existuje silná prezumpcia, že novými zásahmi ublíži jej krehkej podstate. Preto mi je sympatická snaha Spoločnosti Jaromíra Krejcara prinavrátiť tomuto skvelému architektonickému dielu zašlú krásu, slávu a životaschopnosť. The Recovery and Resilience Facility will bring a large sum of funds to Slovakia, and they could contribute to a significant improvement of the quality of life in the country. What are the potential benefits, challenges, and risks that these funds can bring for Slovak architecture?

PM The motto of our Recovery Plan in the field of investments into real estate is the green transformation of family houses and listed historical public buildings. We already had one well-intended insulation plan of renovations for panel housing estates, and it had an infamous influence on the cultivation of our building culture. For that reason, I am concerned whether the insulation of the existing stock of family houses, although leading to an improvement of the structural and technical nature, will be a win for architecture, too. We should be especially cautious in the case of listed buildings, where the focus on green transformation can paradoxically lead to large cultural damages.

The strategic document on protecting the stock of monuments says that the development of the commercial market of monuments and the influx of private capital are the only ways to preserve the stock of monuments given its present state and the limited nature of the state budget.

Private capital will be stimulated by gradually abolishing the excessive financial and bureaucratic burden of monument owners, and by finding a new balance between the requirements of the state from monument owners and the compensation offered in return.

I do hope that the recovery plan will not be used for a reckless investing of the provided funds within the set deadlines, but rather for their well though-out and cultivated appreciation.

The Jury also decided to make a statement about a project which was not a part of the evaluations within CE ZA AR. What do you think about the topic of preserving the deteriorating cultural site of the Machnáč curative house in Trenčianske Teplice?

PM There are several examples of a wonderful treatment of objects with the national cultural site status. We saw two examples also in this year’s CE ZA AR. Unfortunately, there is a much larger number of cases where unique architectural works of art remain in a state of ruin due to a speculative purchase, and because of an inappropriate approach to or a complete absence of their preservation, they are in danger of a physical collapse and with that a decline of the values that made them

monuments in the first place. In the better case their exclusion leads to the fact that the society loses the opportunity to use them for decades.

The Machnáč curative house is privately owned.

It would seem that this can be a plus for the monument, as the overused mantra of state conservation about the lack of funds is not relevant.

But this is not the case. The current owner of Machnáč is not a caring holder and has an unkind approach to the object. This proves the statistic value about the highest debt towards the renovation of immovable monuments on the part of private owners of real estate. Apparently, for him, the ownership of a monument is not a question of prestige but rather just a business calculation.

Although under the pressure of a real possibility of expropriation, he started to act, there is a strong expectation that the new interventions will damage the fragile nature of the monument.

That is why I like the efforts of Jaromír Krejcar Society to give this exquisite architectural work of art its former beauty, glory and vitality back.

And what is more, under emotional and professional guardianship of people who will, without any doubt, give this devastated building exactly what it needs – an uncompromising return of its original architectural beauty and value to life.

VS Videl som Tatry po viac ako 40 rokoch. Sú stále oveľa vyššie než Krkonoše, a tým aj bližšie k nebu. A potom Demänovská dolina.

Pre šokujúcu úroveň a rozsah stavebnej činnosti by som si želal, aby sa dolina zmenila na hlbokú priepasť...

Témou dvadsiateho ročníka CE ZA AR je #zelenaprearchitekturu. Boli pre Vás ako pre porotcu téma udržateľnosti a environmentálne aspekty diel kritériom ich hodnotenia?

VS Environmentálna ohľaduplnosť by mala byť samozrejmosťou. Keby sme boli rigorózni, stačilo by nám na obhliadku asi pár hodín. Ale vážne. Videli sme aj projekty, hoci v menšine, ktoré dokážu našľapovať. Aby však mala zelenosť a udržateľnosť nejaký význam, musí sa stať základným hygienickým návykom.

You travelled across the whole of Slovakia. What left you with the strongest impression?

VS I have seen the Tatras after more than 40 years. They are still much taller than Krkonoše, and so much closer to the sky. And then Demänovská dolina. The shocking level and extent of construction makes me wish that the valley would transform into a deep abyss...

Were the topics of sustainability and environmental aspects part of the criteria you as a juror used to assess the projects?

VS Being considerate towards the environment should go without saying. If we were strict, a few hours would be enough for all the visits. On a more serious note, we have seen projects, although only a minority, that were able to give this topic a good start. But in order to give any meaning to being green and sustainable, this has to become a basic hygienic habit.

This year, a significant personal engagement of architects was visible in the nominated projects.

VS Dobrá architektúra nemôže vzniknúť bez mimoriadnej osobnej angažovanosti spojenej s talentom. A ani bez osvieteného klienta.

Výnimočným momentom je, že sa medzi nomináciami objavila aj novostavba školy, ktorá je však výsledkom iniciatívy súkromného investora. Môže z príkladu ZŠ Guliver v Banskej Štiavnici čerpať inšpiráciu pre revitalizáciu školských stavieb na Slovensku aj verejný sektor a štát?

VS Môže, ale štátu sa ťažko krúti rukou. Štát sa nevie hanbiť. Štát, to sú stovky bojazlivých, alibistických úradníkov a politikov.

Nedostatok iniciatívy alebo nečinnosť sú pre nich, bohužiaľ, receptom na prežitie. Tento projekt je inšpiráciou aj kritikou zároveň.

Posledné roky, a nebolo tomu inak ani v 20. ročníku ceny, sa v kategórii bytové domy nenachádza veľa nominácií. Je bytová výstavba v kríze?

VS Tam, kde dopyt prevažuje nad ponukou, nevzniká konkurenčné prostredie.

Neuspokojená ponuka znižuje štandard na úroveň akceptovateľnosti. Hodnotový systém spoločnosti nachádza aj tu diagnózu.

Pri hodnotení diel sa ako problémy opakovane spomínali urbanizmus a územné plánovanie. Akú správu o urbanizme podáva tohtoročný CE ZA AR? VS Až na výnimky sa nachádza na dovolenke. Je len jedna architektúra.

Privilegovanie objektu poškodzuje mesto.

Komunikujú nominované diela dostatočne so súčasnými globálnymi témami architektúry?

VS Globálnou témou je nevyhnutne kompaktnosť sídel. Povrch planéty nie je elastický a pri rozmnožovacom apetíte druhu Homo sapiens podľa mňa nie je možné pokračovať v nezmyselnej organizácii priestoru tak, ako sme to videli v niektorých nominovaných projektoch.

Do you think that the personal engagement of architects is a unique characteristic of this year’s edition, or is it a representation of a deeper transformation of the occupation?

VS There is no way for high-quality architecture to be created without extraordinary personal engagement and talent. Or without an enlightened client.

It is extraordinary that this year’s nominations also include a new school, which was built at the initiative of a private investor. Can the example of the Guliver Primary School in Banská Štiavnica serve as an inspiration for the revitalisation of school buildings in Slovakia for the public sector and the state?

VS Yes, but you can hardly twist the state’s arm. The state is not able to be ashamed.

The state is composed of hundreds of fearful and evasive officials and politicians. Unfortunately, the lack of initiative or inactivity is their survival recipe. This project serves both as an inspiration and criticism.

Over the last years, including in the 20th edition of the prize, there have not been many nominations in the residential houses category. Is residential construction facing a crisis?

VS An environment where demand exceeds supply is not competitive. Insufficient supply decreases the standard to the acceptable level. The system of values of the society finds its diagnosis here as well.

The assessments of projects often mentioned problems with urbanism and land planning. What is the message about urbanism that this year’s CE ZA AR conveys?

VS Leaving aside some exceptions, it has taken a vacation. There is only one architecture. Favouring the object harms the city.

Do the nominated projects communicate enough with the current global topics of architecture?

VS An unavoidable global topic is the compactness of settlements. The Earth’s surface is not elastic and given the reproductive appetite of the Homo sapiens species, I do not think we can continue with the unreasonable organisation of space that we have seen in the case of some nominated projects. Solitary occurrences of high-quality architecture cannot make up for the mishmash of settlements.

VS Problém vidím v dlhom časovom spektre, ktoré je nutné na realizáciu. Zároveň je krajina médiom, ktorému rozumie „každý“. Tak ako v Česku, aj tu je prístup ku krajine znamením určitej kultúrnej nevyzretosti.

Majú krajinársko-urbanistické a sadovnícke riešenia potenciál byť nástrojom environmentálne zodpovedného prístupu v architektúre?

VS Zodpovednosť nemožno rozdávať ako karty v mariáši. Iba holistický prístup má potenciál na zmenu.

Plán obnovy a stability prináša pre Slovensko veľký objem finančných prostriedkov, ktoré by mohli prispieť k výraznému nárastu kvality života v krajine. Kde vidíte potenciál, výzvy a, naopak, riziká, ktoré tieto finančné prostriedky môžu pre slovenskú architektúru priniesť?

VS Práce je veľa, kam len oko dovidí.

Tak ako v Česku, aj na Slovensku sa Augiášov chliev upratuje veľmi nesystematicky. Chýba spoločenský audit a hovorca tých nenarodených.

Porota sa rozhodla reagovať aj na dielo, ktoré nebolo súčasťou hodnotenia v rámci CE ZA AR. Ako vnímate tému záchrany chátrajúcej kultúrnej pamiatky Liečebného domu Machnáč v Trenčianskych Tepliciach?

VS Pamäť miesta je často dôležitejšia ako novostavba.

The exterior category should first and foremost present high-quality landscaping solutions as well as outstanding park designs. The number of entries in the exterior category has long been low, and as usual, this year’s nominations rather include objects in the exterior. How can we help to develop landscape architecture and apply it more widely?

VS I think the main problem is the long time that is needed for the execution. At the same time, the landscape is a medium that “everyone” understands. Similarly to the Czech Republic, the approach to landscape is a sign of certain cultural immaturity.

Do landscaping, urbanistic and horticultural solutions have the potential to be a tool of the environmentally responsible approach within architecture?

VS Responsibility cannot be dealt out like cards. Only a holistic approach can potentially bring change.

VS There is a lot of work everywhere you look. In both the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the Augean stables are being cleaned out very unsystematically. We are missing a social audit and a spokesperson of those not yet born.

VS The memory of a place is often more important than new construction.

PŠ Myslím si, že s osobným zápalom sa stretáme naprieč históriu ľudského snaženia a je to práve tá vzácna ingrediencia, ktorá je pre dané dielo pridanou hodnotou a dáva mu jeho jedinečnú príchuť.

PŠ Samozrejme, príklad školy v Banskej Štiavnici je pozoruhodný, no zároveň veľmi špecifický.

Súkromný sektor nemôže suplovať štát a ani to nie je jeho úlohou. Pri pohľade na novú školu s kompletnou infraštruktúrou Vám príde na um, o čo všetko naše deti prichádzajú a v akom prostredí dnes vyrastajú. Myslím si, že okrem šikovných pedagógov a kvalitného výukového procesu, mladého človeka formuje aj prostredie, v ktorom vyrastá a tu vidím veľký potenciál pre architektúru. Je škoda, že revitalizácia našich škôl sa zúžila na farebné riešenia zateplených fasád a typové ihriská, pripravujeme tak naše deti o jedinečnú lekciu, ktorú v šlabikári nenájdu.

Posledné roky, a nebolo tomu inak ani v 20. ročníku ceny, sa v kategórii bytové domy nenachádza veľa nominácií. Je bytová výstavba v kríze?

PŠ V parametroch kvantity sa lokálne dá hovoriť až o konjunktúre, ale áno, kvalitatívne sme dlhodobo v kríze. Stále sa dajú vnímať obrovské regionálne rozdiely, pričom dopyt na trhu dokáže nekriticky stráviť naozaj čokoľvek, to vo výsledku zabíja invenciu aj kvalitu.

Pri hodnotení diel sa ako problémy opakovane spomínali urbanizmus a územné plánovanie. Akú správu o urbanizme podáva tohtoročný CE ZA AR?

PŠ Of course, the example of the school in Banská Štiavnica is remarkable, but also highly specific.

The private sector cannot be a substitute for the state, and neither is it its task. Seeing the new school with a complete infrastructure, you immediately think about what our children are missing and what is the environment they grow up in.

I think that young people are formed not only by skilled teachers and high-quality teaching, but also the environment they grow up in, and this is where I see a huge potential for architecture.

It is a pity that revitalisations of our schools are restricted to the colourful designs of insulated façades and standard playgrounds. In this way, we are taking away a unique lesson from our kids, one that they cannot find in their spelling book.

Over the last years, including in the 20th edition of the prize, there have not been many nominations in the residential houses category. Is residential construction facing a crisis?

PŠ In terms of quantity, we can locally even talk about a boom. But yes, in terms of quality, we have long been in a crisis. We can still see great regional differences, while the demand in the market can uncritically digest anything, which in turn kills inventiveness and quality.

PŠ Mesto aj domy musia stáť na pevných základoch. Ak sa tie hneď v úvode zanedbajú alebo zle nastavia, vo výsledku prehráva jednotlivec aj celá spoločnosť.

PŠ The city as well as houses have to lie on strong foundations. If these are neglected or misplaced already in the beginning, it is for the bad of the individual and the whole society.

With our architectural office, we organise winter crossings of mountains. I did not know the surroundings of Štiavnické Bane, which is very unique. And also the extent of construction in Bratislava – every time I come back, there are large new houses and residential complexes.

Were the topics of sustainability and environmental aspects part of the criteria you as a juror used to assess the projects? ŠV Intelligent energy management is important for buildings, but the world of architecture is much richer and has several layers.

I see sustainability as a deeper topic. As a juror, I tried to understand the structures from multiple aspects – I was interested in the context of the building, its social aspect, relationship to its surroundings, but also a surprising solution, durability, or details.

This year, a significant personal engagement of architects was visible in the nominated projects. Do you think that the personal engagement of architects is a unique characteristic of this year’s edition, or is it a representation of a deeper transformation of the occupation? ŠV I think that the personal engagement of the architect has always been crucial; this is not some change in the architect’s role.

The will of the creators often goes against other interests, and the energy and enthusiasm can significantly help. Naturally, smaller projects with a more direct relationship prove easier to find agreement on. In the case of larger investments, there are many interests, and the architect becomes a member of a wide team.

školu v Psároch neďaleko Prahy na základe architektonickej súťaže a zdá sa, že to ako precedens zafungovalo. Dnes prebiehajú ďalšie dve súťaže na návrh základných škôl, jedna je uzavretá a ďalšie sa chystajú.

Posledné roky, a nebolo tomu inak ani v 20. ročníku ceny, sa v kategórii bytové domy nenachádza veľa nominácií. Je bytová výstavba v kríze? ŠV V kríze určite nie je, stavia sa množstvo bytových domov a byty sú predané. Otázkou je, či investori príliš nezväzujú ruky svojim architektom. Zásadná je úloha zástupcov mesta alebo obce, ktorí môžu a musia tlačiť investorov k vytváraniu hodnotného prostredia pre svojich obyvateľov.

Pri hodnotení diel sa ako problémy opakovane spomínali urbanizmus a územné plánovanie. Akú správu o urbanizme podáva tohtoročný CE ZA AR? ŠV Urbanizmus nie je ľahká téma, pre verejnosť je ťažko uchopiteľná a jeho výsledok sa rozhodne neprejaví za jedno volebné obdobie. Časť stavieb, ktoré sme videli, vytvára prostredie, kde chýba vízia, ako má vyzerať verejný priestor, aký potenciál má ulica a ako funguje prepojené mesto. Ale to sú rozhodnutia staré desiatky rokov, ktoré už architekt nemôže ovplyvniť návrhom domu. Snáď sa situácia mení.

Komunikujú nominované diela dostatočne so súčasnými globálnymi témami architektúry? ŠV To neviem, pre mňa je skôr dôležité, ako sa chovajú ku svojim používateľom, k okoliu a či sú nejakým spôsobom inšpiratívne alebo prekvapivé.

Kategória exteriér by mala primárne prezentovať kvalitné krajinárske riešenia vrátane kvalitných parkových úprav. Počet prihlásených diel spadajúcich pod kategóriu exteriér je dlhodobo nízky a aj tento ročník prezentuje v nomináciách skôr objekty v exteriéri. Ako napomôcť rozvoju a širšiemu uplatneniu krajinnej architektúry? ŠV Presvedčiť správu miest a obcí, aby vnímala spoločné priestory ako zásadnú kvalitu pre život mesta a investovala prostriedky do ich úprav a tvorby. Ale možno sa to čiastočne deje, je to beh na dlhú trať, ktorý z pozície návštevníka nie je príliš vidieť.

ROZHOVORY

ŠV My wish is that the public sector would find inspiration in it... Designing a school is one of the most beautiful but also complex tasks an architect can embark on. In the Czech Republic, SOA architects managed to build a primary school in Psáre near Prague based on an architectural competition, and it seems that worked as a precedent. Currently, two other competitions for the design of primary schools are ongoing, one is closed, and more are being prepared.

Over the last years, including in the 20th edition of the prize, there have not been many nominations in the residential houses category. Is residential construction facing a crisis? ŠV It is definitely not in a crisis. Many residential houses are being constructed, and the flats are sold. The question is rather whether investors do not tie the hands of their architects too much. The role of a representative of the municipality is key – they can and must push investors to create valuable environment for their inhabitants.

The assessments of projects often mentioned problems with urbanism and land planning. What is the message about urbanism that this year’s CE ZA AR conveys? ŠV Urbanism is not a simple topic. It is hard to grasp for the public, and the results most certainly do not show in one parliamentary term.

Some of the buildings we have seen create an environment with a missing vision on what the public space should look like, what the potential of a street is and how a connected city works.

But these decisions are decades old, and the architect cannot influence them with their design of a house. Hopefully, the situation is starting to change.

Do the nominated projects communicate enough with the current global topics of architecture? ŠV I don’t know. What is more important for me is their relationship to their users and surroundings, and whether they are inspiring or surprising in some way.

The exterior category should first and foremost present high-quality landscaping solutions as well as outstanding park designs. The number of entries in the exterior category has long been low, and as usual, this year’s nominations rather include objects in the exterior. How can we help to develop landscape

Majú krajinársko-urbanistické a sadovnícke riešenia potenciál byť nástrojom environmentálne zodpovedného prístup v architektúre? ŠV Áno.

Plán obnovy a stability prináša pre Slovensko veľký objem finančných prostriedkov, ktoré by mohli prispieť k výraznému nárastu kvality života v krajine. Kde vidíte potenciál, výzvy a, naopak, riziká, ktoré tieto finančné prostriedky môžu pre slovenskú architektúru priniesť? ŠV To sa neodvažujem tvrdiť. Hádam len to, že voľná krajina je jednou z najvyšších hodnôt, ktorú od predkov máme. Starostlivosť o postavené a chátrajúce stavby vytvára kultúrne prostredie, ale vždy bude drahšia a zložitejšia, ako stavať na zelenej lúke.

Porota sa rozhodla reagovať aj na dielo, ktoré nebolo súčasťou hodnotenia v rámci CE ZA AR. Ako vnímate tému záchrany chátrajúcej kultúrnej pamiatky Liečebného domu Machnáč v Trenčianskych Tepliciach? ŠV Vidieť Machnáč je smutné, ale zároveň nádejné. Je to výnimočná stavba v európskom kontexte. A mám radosť, že sa zdvihla občianska vlna, ktorá má potenciál vrátiť dom do života mesta i na mapu dejín architektúry. Držím vám palce.

ŠV By persuading municipal management to see shared spaces as a significant quality for the life of the city and to invest funds into their improvement and creation. This may be happening in part, but it is like a long-distance race, which is not too visible for a visitor.

Do landscaping, urbanistic and horticultural solutions have the potential to be a tool of the environmentally responsible approach within architecture? ŠV Yes. The Recovery and Resilience Facility will bring a large sum of funds to Slovakia, and they could contribute to a significant improvement of the quality of life in the country. What are the potential benefits, challenges, and risks that these funds can bring for Slovak architecture? ŠV I do not dare to comment on this.

Maybe just the fact that unoccupied landscape is one of the biggest values we have from our ancestors. Caring for built and deteriorating buildings creates a cultural environment, but it will always be more expensive and complex than building on a greenfield.

The Jury also decided to make a statement about a project which was not a part of the evaluations within CE ZA AR. What do you think about the topic of preserving the deteriorating cultural site of the Machnáč curative house in Trenčianske Teplice? ŠV Seeing Machnáč is sad, but also hopeful. In the European context, this is a unique structure. And I am glad that a wave of civic activists came, and that they have the potential to bring the building back into the town’s life as well as on the map of the history of architecture.

Najviac upúta harmónia interiéru, kvalitného detailu a použitej materiality. Princípy a hodnoty architektúry domu sa prelievajú aj do záhrady, ktorá veľmi prirodzeným spôsobom pracuje s tradičnými drevinami a porastom.

HOUSE V This family house reassesses the principle of the traditional three-part village house. It is turned away from the noise of the street, and its side façade provides a spectacular opening towards the garden. A beautiful work with light lets the purity of the form of the perfectly executed new interpretation of the morphology of traditional roof trusses and a spacious interior shine. The harmony of the interior, the quality of the details and the used materials capture the most attention. The principles and values of the house‘s architecture spill over to the garden too, which works with traditional trees and vege-tation in a very natural way.

The house grows into the surroundings and does not erase the memory of the place – it does not mind that its façade is touching the bark of an old apple tree. There is a precious and intimate dia-logue between the house and the garden; we can even talk about spatial Siamese twins.

The mass of the house is adapting to the wavy terrain and existing greenery in a very natural way, and all shared spaces are located around a dominant willow. This lets its morphological but also material symbiosis with the surroundings shine – the plot, where the softness and tactile character of the mate-rials dominates the interior and thus is connected with nature.

The living hallway forms an original part of the floor plan, separated from the garden by a glass wall. Odvaha mladých majiteľov a tvorivý prístup autorky priniesli prekvapivé spojenie tradičnej stodoly a rodinného domu. Dielo je príkladnou odpoveďou na otázku, ako zhodnotiť kultúrne dedičstvo našich predkov pre zabezpečenie domova rodiny. Dáva tiež návod ako skromne, ale pritom nápadito ponúknuť riešenie v duchu témy Zelená pre architektúru. Je to dom hodný 21. storočia. ❍

Tento projekt sme sa rozhodli zaradiť ako nomináciu až do dvoch kategórií.

Chceme tak vyzdvihnúť rozhodnutie investora – mladej rodiny, využiť existujúcu storočnú hospodársku budovu vo Veličnej a premeniť ju na plnohodnotné bývanie. Je to zároveň rozhodnutie, v ktorom táto rodina preferuje návrat do svojho rodiska, hoci jej profesijný život zostáva v hlavnom meste. Vyjadrili tým aj svoju úctu k rodisku a ukázali cestu, ako efektívne využiť pôvodné objekty, rodinné a historické dedičstvo predkov, namiesto ich demolácie a zániku.

Pôvodné materiály boli s láskou druhotne použité a harmonicky doplnené novými. Architektka vytvorila na malom priestore rafinované riešenie, ktoré ponúka užívateľom spoločné priestory aj intímne zákutia. Pokora a skromnosť k celku dala vzniknúť jedinečnej stavbe.

The adaptation of the century-old barn is an exemplary approach to contemporary family living in the countryside. The courage of the young owners and the creative approach of the author brought a sur-prising connection of a traditional barn and a family house. The project gives an exemplary answer to the question how to appreciate the cultural heritage of our ancestors to secure the comfort of a fami-ly home. It also provides a manual for how to come up with a solution in line with the topic Green for architecture in a modest but inventive way. This is a house worthy of the 21st century.

We decided to nominate this project in two categories. By that we want to highlight the decision of the investor, a young family, to use the existing century-old outhouse in Veličná and transform it into a fully-fledged home. This is also a decision in which the family prefers to return to their birthplace, although their professional life stays in the capital. By that they showed their respect for their birthplace and a way how to effectively use original structures, the family and historical heritage of their ancestors, instead of demolishing them. The original materials were used again with love and com-plemented with new ones to create a harmony. In a small space, the architect created an ingenious solution, offering the users shared areas as well as intimate secluded places. Humbleness and humility allowed the formation of a unique building.

DOM PRE RODINU S DOMÁCIMI ZVIERATKAMI ⟶ str. 80 Výraznou kvalitou domu je spôsob, akým sa prelína so záhradou, situovanou na dvoch rôznych úrovniach s dvomi rôznymi témami: centrálny priestor s kuchyňou má po ľavej strane záhradu, ktorá upúta svojou až dekoratívnou neformálnosťou.

Na opačnej strane sa zas nachádza záhrada, ktorá svojím predsadením rámcuje výhľad do okolia. Odfiltruje tak nežiadúce a zároveň vytvára v oddychovej časti s bazénom súkromnú zónu.

Celý dom pôsobí priestranne, čo podčiarkuje aj vyvýšený centrálny priestor nad kuchyňou. Mieru súkromia je možné moderovať aj v interiéri vnútornými oknami z detských spální.

Kvalita prepojenia domu so zeleňou bude postupom času rásť a symbióza so záhradou bude stále zjavnejšia.

HOUSE FOR A FAMILY WITH PETS A significant quality of the house lies in the way how it blends with the garden situated on two differ-ent levels and with two different topics: on the left of the central space with the kitchen, there is a garden, which attracts by its decorative informality. On the other side, there is a garden, which thanks to the way it is moved forward, frames the views of the surroundings.

It thus filters out the undesira-ble, and also creates a private zone in the relaxing part with the swimming pool.

The whole house gives a spacious impression, which is also emphasised by the heightened central space above the kitchen. The level of privacy can be moderated inside too using the interior windows from the children’s bedrooms. The quality of the connection of the house with the greenery will grow with time, and the symbiosis of the house and the garden will be increasingly evident.

⟶ str. 92 Výber nominantov v kategórii Bytové domy poukázal na dôležitosť urbanistických koncepcií, následne pretavených do záväzných územných plánov a plánov zón. Hoci samotné radové mestské vily predstavujú segment luxusného bývania solventného Bratislavčana, reprezentovaného výbornou dispozíciou bytu, dostatočne dimenzovaným pobytovým priestorom exteriéru a kvalitnou materialitou konštrukcií a povrchov, práve vonkajší kontext sa stal priťažujúcou okolnosťou. Slabou stránkou riešenia je areálová komunikácia, ktorá pri vhodnejšom riešení mohla namiesto dopravnej plochy so zvodidlami ponúknuť kvalitu zelených južných terás. Uzatvorenosť areálu v podobe „gated community“ v mierke celého širšieho urbanizovaného prostredia – navyše v území s absentujúcim verejným priestorom a vybavenosťou – sa v konečnom dôsledku obracia proti obyvateľom a zdravej sociálnej interakcii v rámci mestskej štvrte ako celku.

HRAD UHROVEC – HOSPODÁRSKA BUDOVA ⟶ str. 98 Je exemplárnym príkladom v prístupe pamiatkovej obnovy, spoločného historického dedičstva. Nasadenie architekta, ako aj celého tímu, je vnímané ako životné poslanie. Dôsledné poznanie histórie a patričná úcta k pôvodnej architektonickej substancii definujú toto atavistické ľudské snaženie.

Selecting the nominees in the Residential houses category pointed at the importance of urbanistic concepts translated into binding master plans and zone master plans.

Although the terraced town villas themselves embody the segment of luxurious housing for the well-off inhabitants of Bratislava represented by exquisite flat floor plans, sufficient living area in the exterior and high-quality materials of structures and surfaces, the outside context became an aggravating circumstance.

A weakness of the project is the communication within the site. Had it been solved in a more appropriate way; it could have offered the quality of green southern terraces instead of a transport area with guardrails. On the scale of the wider urbanised environment, and in an area with missing public spaces and amen-ities, the closed-off character of the project in the form of a “gated community” turns against the in-habitants and a healthy social interaction within the neighbourhood as a whole.

UHROVEC CASTLE – OPERATION BUILDING This is an exemplary instance of the approach to the renovation of monuments, our shared historical heritage. The architect’s enthusiasm as well that of the whole team, is considered as their life mission. This atavistic human endeavour is defined by thorough knowledge of history and a proper respect to the original architectural substance.

OBNOVA A ADAPTÁCIA SECESNEJ VILY V TATRÁCH ⟶ str. 104 Obnovená vila Lavína v Novom Smokovci je z pohľadu poroty fenoménom. Dokazuje, že je možné adaptovať historickú vilu na plnohodnotnú funkciu so súčasnými nárokmi.

Podarilo sa tak zvrátiť dezolátny stav domu, ktorý roky chátral aj napriek tomu, že je národnou kultúrnou pamiatkou. Predstavuje zároveň veľmi kvalitnú rekonštrukciu pri zachovaní súladu požiadaviek pamiatkovej ochrany a požiadaviek návštevníkov Tatier. Táto úctivá premena historickej tatranskej vily stojí v ostrom kontraste s tým, k čomu dochádza v posledných rokoch v Demänovskej doline v Nízkych Tatrách. Zatiaľ čo rekonštrukcia vily je bez diskusie pozitívnym činom, isté pochybnosti existujú vo vzťahu k prevedeniu a materiálovej voľbe exteriérových plôch.

Použitie dlažobných kociek a voľne pohodených kameňov bez kompozície je nepresvedčivé. Pre secesnú vilu by bolo vhodnejšie použitie mlátu alebo nepravidelných kamenných dosiek.

Voľba rastlín rovnako nezodpovedá tatranskej flóre a prostrediu ani charakteru secesných záhrad. Exteriérové zábradlie, ktoré pribudlo počas obnovy, remeselne nezapadá do rukopisu secesných majstrov prítomného v interiéri a exteriéri vily.

REFURBISHMENT OF THE ART NOUVEAU VILLA IN HIGH TATRAS The jury considers the revitalised villa Lavína in Nový Smokovec to be a phenomenon. It proves that it is possible to adapt a historical villa to be fully functional in line with contemporary demands. Thus the authors succeeded in reversing the dilapidated condition of a house which had long been falling into disrepair despite the fact that it is a national cultural site. It also represents a very high-quality reconstruction ensuring balance between the demands of monuments conservation and the demands of people visiting the Tatras.

This respectful transformation of this historical villa in the Tatras is in sharp contrast with what has been happening in Demänovská dolina in the Low Tatras over the last few years. While the reconstruction of the villa is no doubt a positive feat, there are a few doubts con-cerning the execution and materials of exterior surfaces. Using cobblestones and freely scattered stones without any composition is not convincing. For an Art Nouveau villa, it would be more adequate to use packed gravel or irregular stone slabs. The selection of plants does not reflect the flora and envi-ronment of the Tatras or the character of Art Nouveau gardens. The exterior railing added during the renovation does not follow the handwriting of Art Nouveau craftsmen that can be found both in the interior

Pridanou hodnotou bytu je železobetónový trámový strop, ktorý poukazuje na konštrukčnú podstatu funkcionalistického mestského paláca. Dôležitým deliacim článkom je knižnica, ktorá oddeľuje denný obývací priestor od nočných priestorov spální. Jedným zo vstupov do hosťovskej spálne sú drevené harmonikové dvere, ktoré poskytujú pri ich otvorení rozšírenie obytného priestoru o intímny „salónik“, čo dodáva priestoru priam scénický charakter.

The flat stands out thanks to the modification of its layout constituting the main living space, while other rooms of the night part only cover the necessary area. The added value of the flat lies in the beam ceiling made of reinforced concrete, which shows the structural nature of the functionalist town palace. An important separating element is the bookshelf, which separates the day living area from the night spaces of the bedrooms. One of the entrances into the guest room is through a folding wooden door, and if it is open, the living space is extended and an intimate lounge is added, which gives the space almost a scenic character.

Toto riešenie nenarušuje vzdušnosť a veľkorysosť vnútorného priestoru. Porota si všimla mimoriadne pozitívny trend – mladé rodiny stále viac spolupracujú s architektmi aj napriek limitom vlastného rozpočtu. Kombinácia invencie, spolupráce a rešpektu pre potreby mladej rodiny dáva základ pre kvalitné architektonické riešenie.

A big value of this flat is based on its courageous, even experimental layout solution. A transparent wall cuts through the flat diagonally, dividing the original large historical interior into smaller rooms tailored to the needs of a young family. This solution does not disrupt the airiness and generosity of the interior space. The jury noticed a very positive trend – despite the limits of their budget, young families increasingly work with architects. The combination of the intervention, cooperation, and re-spect for the needs of a young family creates the foundation for a high-quality architectural solution.

VYHLIADKOVÁ VEŽA DEVÍNSKA KOBYLA ⟶ str. 128 Potreba vidieť, orientovať sa v krajine je jednou z archetypálnych potrieb človeka. Historicky je Devín svedkom rôznych časových metamorfóz. Je pravdepodobné, že súčasný vegetačný povrch je výsledkom dlhodobej „kolonizácie“ armádou Československej republiky so všetkými negatívnymi dôsledkami. Dnes je možné iba špekulovať, akú tvár ponúkal Devín návštevníkom na začiatku 20. storočia. Podľa geologicky hodnotne zložených kopcov je vcelku možné, že rozľahlosť pohľadov do krajiny bola oveľa viac obmedzená než teraz. Nová rozhľadňa je konštrukčne zaujímavým dielom. Zámerná priestorová choreografia umožňuje rozprestretie pohľadov do všetkých svetových strán. Vďaka transparentnosti sa návštevník stáva dynamickou súčasťou celkovej kompozície. Na pohyb odpovedá rozhľadňa miernym chvením a návštevník má doslova pocit akéhosi vznášania. Napriek všetkým pozitívam však otázka nevyhnutnosti podobných počinov zostáva nezodpovedaná.

A LOOKOUT TOWER ON DEVÍNSKA KOBYLA

The need to see and to find one’s bearings in the landscape is one of the archetypal needs of people.

Historically, Devín has witnessed various time metamorphoses. It is likely that the current vegetative surface is a result of a long-term “colonisation” of the army of the Czechoslovak Republic with all its negative impacts. Today we can only speculate, what face did Devín show to the visitors at the begin-ning of the 20th century. Given the geologically valuable composition of the hills it is very much possi-ble that the extent of the views of the landscape was much more limited than today. The new observa-tion tower is a structurally interesting project. The intentional spatial choreography enables views towards all cardinal points. Thanks to the tower’s transparency, the visitor becomes a dynamic part of the overall composition. The tower responds to movement by subtle vibrations, and the visitor literally has the feeling of floating. Despite all positives, the question whether similar feats are necessary re-mains unanswered.

This intervention is not a striking gesture but rather something that needs to be discovered. The small mo(nu) ments on the banks of Chorvátske rameno in the largest housing estate in Slovakia direct the attention to the valuable public and natural space of Petržalka‘s central axis. The state of the com-munist-era estates is still a diagnosis of the system of values of the society. The anonymity of the inter-spaces in the housing estate, a certain matter-of-course neglect and lethargy and shifting responsibil-ity for this state to the city management are what led the authors of

Používajú k tomu nájdené materiály, potetované časom, avšak trvalo odmietané. Neformálne mo(nu)menty sú akýmsi súčasným variantom arte povera. Zároveň upriamujú pozornosť na otázku, akou cestou sa vydá tento priestor v budúcnosti po dostavbe električkovej trate. Mo(nu)menty sú vyhliadkou, ktorá otvára oči tam, kde sú všetci slepí.

the project to take up this search and initiative, trying to provoke and highlight the big potential that these spaces have for the habita-bility of the area. In the form of some kind of spatial architecture, they uncover what is hidden. They use found materials, tattooed by time, but also long refused. Informal mo(nu)ments are some kind of a contemporary variant of arte povera. They also direct attention to the question what path this space will take after the construction of the new tramway. ⟶ str. 140 Porota ocenila urbanisticky dobre umiestnený objekt v tesnej blízkosti historického centra. Elegantné proporcie domu vytvárajú mestský šperk uprostred zástavby. Pozemok investora je voľne priechodný vďaka čomu sa zapája do života mesta, čo podčiarkuje aj galéria umenia v parteri objektu. Veľkorysé až rozšafné priestorové riešenie zvýrazňuje vysoká úroveň materiálového a remeselného prevedenia. V niektorých smeroch však prevážilo estetické cítenie autorov nad funkčnosťou celku.

The jury appreciated that in terms of urbanism, the object was well placed in close proximity to the historical city centre. The elegant proportions of the house create a jewel in the centre of a built-up area. The investor’s plot is freely passable, thanks to which it becomes part of the life of the city, which is also highlighted by the art gallery in the parterre of the building.

The generous, almost ex-travagant spatial solution is reinforced by the high level of materials and craftsmanship. However, in some respects, the aesthetic taste of the authors outweighed the functionality of the whole

The town house is located in a unique neighbourhood, the qualities of which are a clear driving force in forming an authentic architectural expression. The palace in the corner and its honesty brings to-gether the elementary attributes of architecture and thus become a relevant part of the future history of this place and city.

Živelné obývanie umelcami bolo nahradené solídnou obnovou, ktorá ponúka vysoký štandard administratívnych priestorov. Autori sa v návrhu dobre vysporiadali so súčasnými nárokmi na vnútorné prostredie budovy, ukryli technológie a zachovali množstvo remeselných detailov, ktoré utvárajú atmosféru stavby. Veľkorysý verejný priestor a otvorenie budovy v parteri prepája objekt s mestom. Neostáva iné, než si želať, aby investor našiel rovnako kultivovaných nájomníkov, ktorí budú uctievať otvorené halové priestory pôvodných cvernových závodov a industriálneho ducha stavby.

SPINNING MILL 1900 The jury appreciated the effort of the investor and authors for a cultivated adaptation of industrial heritage.

Spontaneous occupation by artists was replaced with a solid renovation, which offers a high standard of office spaces. In their design, the authors managed to deal with the current demands for the internal environment of the building successfully. They hid the technologies and retained most of the details of craftsmanship, which form the building’s atmosphere. The generous public space and opening of the building in the parterre connects the object with the city. We can only hope that the investor will find similarly cultivated tenants, who will worship the open hall spaces of the original thread factory and the industrial spirit of the building.

⟶ str. 158 Likerka sa stala zdarnou premenou v srdci kúpeľného mesta. Nová náplň vdýchla život nielen domu, ale i jeho okoliu. Okrem atraktívnej prevádzky tak Likérka dáva mestu aj cenný verejný priestor a vo svojej komplexnosti sa stáva novým atraktorom.

Konverzia, ktorá môže byť precedensom pre podobné miesta, ktoré vytrvalo čakajú na svoju príležitosť.

Likerka became a successful example of transformation in the heart of the spa town. The new content gave new life not only to the building but also to its surroundings. Besides the attractive bar, Likerka also gives the town a valuable public space, and thanks to its complexity, it becomes a new attractor. This is a conversion that can be a precedent for similar places, patiently waiting for their opportunity.

plaveckého bazénu a exteriérových športovísk. Areál je navyše obohatený o starostlivo založené parkové úpravy. To všetko v najvyššej kvalite z hľadiska funkčných väzieb, architektonického konceptu a technických detailov. Dôležitou súčasťou návrhu je i premyslený design interiérov a voľba mobiliáru s ohľadom na vysoké nároky prevádzky školy. Táto škola je deklaráciou toho, že je nevyhnutné klásť najvyšší dôraz na kvalitu priestorov pre vzdelávanie spolu s priestormi pre zdravotnú starostlivosť. Vnuká tým otázku, prečo podobná verejná deklarácia nie je prezentovaná aj zo strany štátu, miest a samospráv.

V slovenskom kontexte, a trúfam si povedať, že i v českom, je táto škola mimoriadnym počinom. Kvalita externých priestorov je porovnateľná s prestížnymi privátnymi školami ako Eaton v Anglicku alebo Cramebrook v Austrálii. Kvalita prevedenia materiálov je výnimočná. To sa obzvlášť prejavuje v použitej vegetácii, ktorá bola častokrát inštalovaná s predstihom niekoľkých rokov. Veríme, že škola sa stane precedensom, ktorý nastaví latku pre ďalšie projekty, či už v privátnej alebo verejnej sfére.

Priestor je veľkoryso koncipovaný, umožňuje spontánne alebo organizované aktivity na celej škále povrchov.

Vysoký štandard je ďalej podporovaný neobvyklou úrovňou starostlivosti, čo nie je zďaleka samozrejmé. Obzvlášť je nutné vyzdvihnúť celostný prístup k riešeniu celého komplexu. Projekt je exemplárnym príkladom spolupráce architekta a krajinného architekta. ❍

Porota zaradila školu Guliver v Banskej Štiavnici aj do kategórie Fenomény architektúry. Ide o výnimočnú situáciu, v rámci ktorej sa súkromný investor rozhodol postaviť základnú školu. Objekt svojou architektonickou a dizajnérskou kvalitou, ako aj samotným prevedením ďaleko presahuje štandardy v oblasti školských stavieb nielen na Slovensku.

Koncepcia a filozofia objektu stojí na komplexnosti vývoja detí. Ich potreby

a gym, a swimming pool, and an exterior sports ground. The grounds are enriched with carefully planted park greenery. And all of this in the highest quality in terms of functional linkages, architectural concepts, and technical details. An important part of the project is also a well-thoughtout design of the interi-ors and the selection of furnishings following the high demands of the school’s operation. This school is a declaration of the fact that it is necessary to place the highest emphasis on the quality of spaces for education together with spaces for healthcare. This leads to the question why a similar public dec-laration is not presented also from the side of the state, cities, and municipalities.

In the Slovak context, and I dare say in the Czech as well, this school is a unique feat. The quality of the exterior spaces is comparable with prestigious private schools like Eaton in England or Cramebrook in Australia.

The quality of the execution of materials is outstanding. This is especially demonstrated in the used vegetation, which was often installed several years in advance. We believe that the school will serve as a precedent, setting the bar for future projects in both the private and public sphere. The space is organised in a generous way and enables spontaneous or organised activities on a range of surfaces.

The high standard is further reinforced by the high level of care, which definitely cannot be taken for granted.

It is necessary to highlight especially the holistic approach to the design of the whole complex. The project is an exemplary instance of the cooperation of an architect and a land-scape architect.

The jury nominated the Guliver school in Banská Štiavnica also in the Phenomena of Architecture category. This is a unique situation, in which a private investor decided to build a primary school. The quality of the object’s architecture, design and

Porota sa jednomyseľne zhodla, že ojedinelosť takéhoto počinu stojí na tom, že to najlepšie v spôsobe uvažovania o architektúre má smerovať k najmladšej generácii. Vzdelávanie a výchova detí sa má vykonávať v mimoriadne kvalitnom architektonickom prostredí, ktoré ich stimuluje nielen k lepším študijným výsledkom, ale aj k citlivosti k umeniu a medziľudským vzťahom. Porota sa zaoberala aj pomerne naliehavou problematikou, koho úlohou je stavať kvalitné školské zariadenia. Má povinnosti štátu suplovať súkromný investor?

execution significantly exceeds the standard in school buildings not only in Slovakia. The concept and philosophy of the object is based on the complexity of the development of children. Their needs determine the architectural composition and purpose of individual spaces. The jury agreed unanimously that the uniqueness of this feat lies in the fact that the best of the ways of thinking about architecture should be directed towards the youngest generation. The education of children should be performed in an architectural envi-ronment of outstanding quality, as this stimulates not only better study results, but also a sensi-tivity towards art and interpersonal relationships. The jury also discussed a relatively pressing matter: whose task is it to build high-quality school buildings? Should the obligations of the state be taken over by a private investor?

Stavať na vidieku pre ľudí z mesta je stále častejšia téma pre architektov. Výzvou je, ak sa navrhuje do prímestskej „kaše“, rozmanitého kontextu názorov a tvarov. V prípade Domu V to tak nebolo, pretože vstúpil do vzácne zachovalej vidieckej atmosféry bratislavských Vajnor. Preto sa ponúkalo zachovanie pozdĺžnej dispozície a sedlovej strechy. Pôvodný plán bola rekonštrukcia existujúceho domu, no nakoniec padlo rozhodnutie o novostavbe. Tá materiálovo čerpá z recyklácie pôvodného muriva, čo má nielen ekonomický, ale aj environmentálny efekt. Tehla sa navyše stala určujúcim výrazovým prvkom interiéru. Členenie vnútorného priestoru je inšpirované klasickým trojdielnym domom, myslí však na využitie dnešným človekom. Vynechanie stropu medzi obytným priestorom a krovom prináša vzdušnosť a umožňuje tiež vloženie vyzdvihnutého pracovného boxu. Dôležitým prvkom je záhrada, pri jej úprave išlo o zachovanie pôvodnej ležérnosti. V zeleni pribudol bazén a parkovanie je odizolované živým plotom.

Building in the countryside for people from the city is becoming a frequent topic for architects.

It is challenging when the design is supposed to be added to a suburban “mish-mash” of a diverse context of opinions and shapes. This was not the case with House V, because it entered a rare, preserved countryside atmosphere of Vajnory in Bratislava. That is why the preservation of the longitudinal layout, and the saddle roof was suggesting itself. The original plan was to refurbish the existing house, but at the end, new construction was selected. It uses the original brickwork, which has not only an economic but also an environmental effect. Moreover, bricks became the defining element of the interior. The structure of the interior space is inspired by the traditional three-part house, but accounts for the fact that it is used by people of today. Omitting the ceiling between the living space and the roof gives it airiness and also enables the insertion of an elevated working box. The garden is an important element, and the most important aspect of its design is maintaining its original relaxed character. A pool was added among the greenery, and the parking is isolated using a hedge.

Mierne sa zvažujúci pozemok s množstvom zelene a pretekajúcim potôčikom. Už samotné prostredie ovplyvnilo zadanie a realizáciu rodinného domu v Záhorskej Bystrici. Jednopodlažný päťizbový dom vytvára arénu v tvare písmena L okolo átria prírodnej scenérie. Denná pobytová časť domu je orientovaná do intímnej záhrady so stromami. Dominuje jej veľkorysý priestor spojenej kuchyne a obývacej izby. Nočnú časť domu tvoria izby orientované do odvrátenej časti pozemku. Pri takejto dispozícii vznikol pred vstupmi do spální priestor pre obytnú chodbu, ktorá je pocitovo spojená so záhradou, deliacim prvkom je tu len presklená stena. Je to miesto pre relax, čítanie či hru na hudobný nástroj.

Prechádzka po chodbe ústi do exteriérovej lávky nad potokom, potenciálneho miesta pre umelecké dielo. Z vonkajšej strany domu sa korzom stáva krytá terasa. Kompozične i materiálovo stavba komunikuje s prostredím. Dom je zhotovený z CLT dreveného masívu, využíva konštrukcie drevených roštov a vonkajší smrekovcový obklad.

A lightly descending plot with loads of greenery and a little brook. The environment itself influenced the assignment and execution of the family house in Záhorská Bystrica. A single-storey house with five rooms creates an L-shaped arena surrounding an atrium of natural scenery.

The day area of the house is turned towards an intimate garden with trees. It is dominated by the generous space of a kitchen connected with the living room. The night part of the house is composed of rooms turned towards the turned-away part of the plot. This layout enabled the creation of a space for a living hallway in front of the entrances to the bedrooms, which is connected to the garden, with the only divisive element being a glass wall. This is a space to relax, read or play a musical instrument. A walk along the hallway leads us to an exterior bridge over the brook, a potential space for a work of art. The roofed terrace provides a promenade on the outside of the house. The building communicates with the environment both in terms of its composition and materials. The house is built using CLT solid wood, uses the structures of wooden grates and an outside larch cladding.

Ako naložiť s rodinným dedičstvom v dedinskom prostredí v podobe storočného humna? Zbúrať a postaviť niečo nové? Alebo zmeniť pôvodnú hospodársku budovu pre potreby rodiny v 21. storočí? A dá sa to vôbec? Rodinný dom v obci Veličná na to dáva svojskú odpoveď. Cieľom bolo zachovanie pozostalosti v maximálnej možnej miere a zároveň vytvorenie bývania s moderným štandardom. Predpokladom realizácie bola zachovalosť pôvodného objektu, do ktorého vnútra bola vsadená novostavba na vlastných základoch. Z humna sa tak stal obal pre nový dom. Pod storočnou škridlou pribudla strecha, využili sa pôvodné murované stĺpy. Materiálovo dom priznáva dobové prístupy, využili sa tehly z iného objektu. Pôvodná stavba ovplyvnila aj priestorové a funkčné riešenie domu. Vzniklo tak vysoké centrálne pobytové miesto a netypické radenie ďalších priestorov. K presvetleniu prispieva perforácia obkladu, natočenie obkladových dosiek a veľké presklenie. V tejto časti humno ustúpilo a vzniklo tak miesto pre terasu.

How to deal with family heritage in the countryside in the form of a century-old barn? Demolish it and build something new? Or convert the original outhouse following the needs of a family in the 21st century? Can it be even done? The family house in Veličná gives an unusual answer to this question. The aim was to preserve the heritage as much as possible, and at the same time create a place to live with a modern standard. The precondition for the project was the preserved state of the original object, into which a new building with its own foundations was inserted.

The barn thus became an envelope for the new house. Under the century-old roof tiles, a new roof was added, and the original brick columns were used as well. In terms of materials, the house acknowledges the original approaches; the bricks used come from another building. The original structure also influenced the spatial and functional organisation of the house. It thus gave rise to a tall central living area with an atypical organisation of the other spaces. Light is brought in thanks to the perforated cladding, slightly turned cladding boards and large glazing. In this part, the barn stepped aside, thus providing the space for a terrace.

Ako postaviť rodinný dom v relatívne husto zastavanej oblasti a zabezpečiť dostatočné súkromie? Jednou z možností je koncept „domu v dome“, ktorého výsledkom je aj Dom pre rodinu s domácimi zvieratkami v bratislavskej lokalite Pod Slancom. Centrálne situovanú budovu domu obopína vonkajší múr. Svojimi perforáciami v tvare okien či dverí vytvára priehľady a hrá sa s motívom domovej fasády. Zároveň slúži ako funkčný predel rôznych druhov záhrad. „Za plotom“ sa nachádzajú úžitkové a prírodnejšie časti, tu možno stretnúť aj zvieratká, ktoré dali domu meno. Zeleň vo vnútri obvodového múru je intímnejšou relaxačnou zónou. Vnútorná záhrada je zároveň prirodzeným predĺžením interiéru.

Prispieva k tomu fasádne presklenie prízemia domu, ktoré tvorí veľký otvorený pobytový priestor. K atmosfére prízemia prispieva stropný svetlík. Z prízemia, ktoré obsahuje aj rodičovskú spálňu, pracovňu a kúpeľňu, vedú schody na podlažie, kde sa nachádzajú detské izby. Odtiaľto tiež vidieť, čo sa v celom dome deje.

How to build a house in a relatively densely built-up area and ensure sufficient privacy?

One of the solutions is the concept of a “house within a house,” which resulted in the House for a family with pets in a part of Bratislava called Pod Slancom. A centrally placed building of the house itself is surrounded by an outside wall.

Its perforations in the shape of windows create views and play with the theme of a house façade.

At the same time it functions as a divider of various garden types. “Behind the fence,” there are more functional and natural parts, and this is where you can meet the animals that gave this house its name. The greenery inside the outside wall creates a more intimate relaxing zone. The inside garden also forms a natural extension of the interior. This is reinforced by the glazing on the façade of the ground floor of the house, which creates a large open living area. The atmosphere of the ground floor is improved thanks to a skylight on the ceiling. The ground floor, which also includes the parents’ bedroom, an office, and a bathroom, has a staircase leading upstairs to the children‘s rooms. This place also provides a view of what is happening in the house.

Bytová výstavba v prostredí malého slovenského mesta ešte zďaleka nie je štandardom.

A už vôbec nie taká, ktorá by vychádzala z architektonickej súťaže. V prípade Bytových domov Kamence v Kysuckom Novom Meste to tak však bolo a víťazstvo vo vyzvanom tendri si odniesol ateliér SLLA. Ich dielom je masterplan celého pripravovaného územia, na ktorom má postupne vzniknúť až 26 obytných domov, vrátane občianskej vybavenosti. Prvá etapa veľkého projektu je dokončená, rozbehla sa druhá. Nové obytné domy sú na jednej strane v kontakte s mestom, z druhej strany ich rámcuje rieka Kysuca. Nové sídlisko nechce tieto dve zóny oddeľovať, práve naopak, chce byť ich spojnicou. Línie nových budov majú vytvoriť koridory pohybu ľudí do prírody. Obytné domy sa vyznačujú veľkou variabilitou priestorov a kompozícií bývania, reagujú na dopyt a ponúkajú rôzne možnosti. Oživujúcim detailom sú umelecké diela na fasádach domov.

Plusom je tiež autorské detské ihrisko, ktoré nadväzuje na tému blízkeho vodného toku.

Residential construction in the setting of a small Slovak town is still not standard. Even less so if we are talking about a project which arose as a result of an architectural competition. However, this was the case with the Kamence Residential Houses in Kysucké Nové Mesto, and the winner of the invited tender was the SLLA office. Their project includes a master plan of the whole area to be developed. Gradually, as many as twenty-six residential houses should be constructed there, including public amenities. The first stage of this big project is finished, and the second is already under way. On one side, the new residential houses are in contact with the town and are framed by the Kysuca river on the other. The new housing estate does not intend to separate these two zones; on the contrary, it aims to become a connecting element. The lines of the new buildings should create corridors for people to approach nature. The residential houses are characterised by a large variability of spaces and living compositions; they respond to the demand and offer numerous opportunities. An interesting detail can be found in the artworks on the façades. Another advantage is also the original children’s playground, which follows the topic of the nearby water stream.

Bratislavská lokalita Vtáčnik, ktorá sa nachádza v kopci nad mestom, bola v územnom pláne vyčlenená na bytovú výstavbu. Preto tu v posledných rokoch prebieha čulý stavebný ruch, v hustom pláne tu vedľa seba vzniklo viacero rôznych obytných domov či komplexov.

Patria medzi ne aj Domy Roličky, ktoré do tohto mixu prinášajú vlastnú špecifickosť. V deviatich domoch sa nachádza 27 veľkometrážnych bytov vyššieho štandardu. Jednotlivé domy majú charakter rodinných domov, v každom sú tri byty, výťahom priamo prístupné z garáže. Denná časť bytov je orientovaná smerom na mesto, dokonale využíva možnosť unikátneho výhľadu. Bočné fasády vytvárajú átriá, lodžie sú zdrojom svetla i prevetrávania hlbokých priestorov bytov. Každý byt má vlastnú terasu, byty na druhom poschodí disponujú dokonca rozsiahlou strešnou terasou.

V porovnaní s ostatnou výstavbou v tejto lokalite majú Domy Roličky skôr minimalistický vzhľad, ambíciou autorov bolo, aby pri pohľade z diaľky objekty nevytŕčali, ale skôr splývali s kopcom.

The Bratislava neighbourhood of Vtáčnik located on a hill above the city was dedicated for residential construction in the master plan. Thus, over the last years, it has been experiencing lively construction activity and several residential houses or complexes have been created there in a dense plan. This also includes the Roličky houses, which bring their own specificity into the mix. Nine houses offer twenty-seven large-scale flats of a higher standard. The individual houses resemble family houses, and each has three flats directly accessible by a lift from the garage. The day area of the flats is turned towards the city, making best use of the opportunity for unique views. The side façades create atria, and loggias provide a source of light and ventilation of the deep spaces of the flats. Each flat has its own terrace, and the flats on the second floor even have a large roof terrace. Compared to the other construction in the area, the Roličky Houses are rather minimalist, and it was the intention of the authors to prevent them sticking out when looking at them from a distance, blending in with the slope.

Historické ruiny hradov svojím postupným rozpadom strácajú architektonickú stopu. Je ojedinelé, ak sa podarí zachrániť ucelený hradný objekt či jeho časť. Obnova hospodárskej budovy na hrade Uhrovec v Strážovských vrchoch je vo viacerých ohľadoch unikátna. Hrad patrí medzi najzachovalejšie na Slovensku, čo špeciálne pri neskororenesančnej hospodárskej budove na dolnom nádvorí vytvorilo predpoklad pre jej komplexnú obnovu, a to vrátane prinavrátenia strechy.

Všetky rekonštrukčné zásahy mali historické odôvodnenie, sú reverzibilné a boli nastavené tak, aby sa minimalizoval zásah do pamiatky. Pri rekonštrukcii sa pracovalo s dobovými materiálmi i technikami, príkladom sú ručne štiepené šindle.

Autori sa aktívne bránia moderným prvkom, preto v objekte nie je elektrina ani bleskozvod.

Obnovou hospodárskej budovy neožil len pravdepodobný dobový výraz objektu, ale vzniklo tak aj zázemie pre kolektív dlhodobého projektu a pre podujatia rozširujúce záujem o tento druh práce s historickou pamäťou.

As they are gradually falling apart, historical ruins of castles lose their architectural footprint. It is rare if someone manages to rescue a complete castle object or its part. The revitalisation of the outhouse in the Uhrovec castle in the Strážovské vrchy mountain range is unique in several aspects. The castle is one of the most preserved ones in Slovakia, which created conditions for its complex revitalisation including the return of the roof especially in the case of a late Renaissance outhouse in the lower courtyard. All interventions within the reconstruction were historically justified, are reversible and minimise modifications of the monument. Historical materials and techniques were used during the reconstruction; one of the examples are manually split roof tiles. The authors actively avoid modern elements, which is why the building lacks electricity and a lightning conductor. By revitalising the outhouse, the probable historical expression of the object was revived, and it also enabled the creation of facilities for the team of this long-term project, as well as for events raising interest in this kind of work with the historical memory.

Pôvodnej architektúre vo Vysokých Tatrách často hrozí, že sa stane predmetom necitlivej prestavby alebo skončí ako ruina. Aj dnes vynovená secesná Vila Lavína sa ocitla na zozname „tatranských harabúrd“, čiže objektov s nejasnou budúcnosťou. Budova z roku 1902, ktorú si nechal postaviť budapeštiansky továrnik ako letné sídlo a ktorá bola od roku 2000 vo veľmi schátranom stave, bola našťastie zachránená.

Pravdepodobne prvá secesná vila v Tatrách má dnes za sebou citlivú rekonštrukciu, ktorá oživila niekdajší výzorový cveng budovy. Do ulice sa prezentuje ako secesná paráda, smerom k vrchom je to horský hrazdený štýl. Krédom rekonštrukcie bolo prinavrátenie autenticity secesnej podobe a súčasné naplnenie predpokladov ubytovacieho zariadenia. Nová je predná časť budovy so schodiskom, rozšírený a prehĺbený suterén vytvoril priestor pre „raňajkáreň“ či malú kuchyňu. V interiéri sa okrem schodiska takmer nič nezachovalo, zariadenie vzniklo na základe historického prieskumu podobných dobových stavieb.

The original architecture in the High Tatras is often in danger of becoming the subject of an insensitive revitalisation or falling into disrepair.

The now-revitalised Art Nouveau Villa Lavína got on the list of the “junk of the Tatras,” meaning objects with unclear future. A building that was constructed in 1902 as a summerhouse for a factory owner from Budapest and was in a very bad state since 2000, was fortunately saved. Probably the first Art Nouveau villa in the Tatras has gone through a sensitive reconstruction which revived the former glory of the building‘s appearance. Towards the street, it is presented as an Art Nouveau splendour, and towards the peaks it has a mountain-like half-timbered style. The main aim of the reconstruction was to give the Art Nouveau form its authenticity back, and at the same time fulfil the conditions for an accommodation establishment. New elements include the front part of the building with the stairway and a widened and deepened basement, which provided the space for a breakfast room and a small kitchen. Besides the staircase, almost nothing else was preserved.

The furnishings were created based on a historical survey of similar buildings.

Múdry interiér obchodu nekričí, ale necháva vyznieť obsah. V súlade s tým architekt Martin Skoček tvrdí, že v prípade priestoru odevného výrobcu Nehera chceli s kolegami ostať absolútne neviditeľní. A vytvoriť pódium pre módu, ktorá sama pôsobí elegantne a striedmo.

Obnovená klasická značka z 30. rokov minulého storočia vstúpila svojím prvým kamenným obchodom do centra Viedne, vyhla sa však frekventovaným nákupným adresám. Chce, aby si ju zákazníci našli. Obsadzuje parter modernistickej budovy, kde za vstupom s pôvodnými výkladmi čaká veľký stôl, pôsobiaci ako otvorená náruč. Okolo neho je pod mobilným systémom osvetlenia rozmiestnený produktový program, v ustúpenej zadnej časti priestor rámcujú závesy skúšobných kabínok. Minimalizované zázemie uvoľňuje čo najviac miesta pre predajňu. Hoci utilitárny dizajn a monochromatickosť priestoru zdanlivo nemôžu súznieť s meniacimi sa kolekciami výrobcu, je cítiť, že tvorcovia interiéru sa dokonale trafili do nálady a remeselnej precíznosti značky.

A smart interior of a shop is not flashy but allows the contents to shine. In line with this, architect Martin Skoček says that he and his colleagues wanted to remain completely invisible in the space of the clothing producer Nehera. And they created a stage for fashion, which itself is elegant and modest. This renewed classic brand from the 1930s entered the centre of Vienna with its first brick-and-mortar shop, but it avoided busy shopping addresses. It wants the customers to discover it. It takes up the parterre of a modernist building, and behind the entrance with the original shop windows, there is a large table resembling open arms. Under a mobile system of lighting, this table is surrounded by the product programme, and the space is framed by the curtains of the fitting rooms in the recessed back part. The minimised utility rooms free up as much space as possible for the shop itself. Although the utilitarian design and monochromatic character of the space seemingly cannot create a symphony with the changing collections of the producer, it can be felt that the authors of the interior managed to grasp the mood and craftsmanship of the brand perfectly.

Potenciál interiéru v základoch ovplyvňuje aj budova, v ktorej sa nachádza. V prípade bytu N1M je to Živnostenský dom v Bratislave, ktorý v roku 1928 navrhol architekt Klement Šilinger.

Polyfunkčný objekt, v ktorom sídli divadlo Nová scéna, ponúkal kancelárie, obchody i vyše sedemdesiat komfortných bytov. Bol jedným z najväčších vtedajších stavebných projektov v meste. Dnešná úprava interiéru jedného z bytov preto stavia na solídnych základoch. To, čo si prináša rodina obyvateľov a zároveň realizátorov, je predstava o spoločnom živote. Vizáž bytu vznikala počas rekonštrukcie, no od začiatku bolo jasné, že ústredný „open space“ má byť dostatočne veľkým miestom spoločného pobytu.

Z tohto dôvodu ustúpila stena spální, ktorá je jasným rezom bytu a zároveň knižnicou i galériou umenia. Kuchyňu a šatník rieši vložený monolit. Priestor priznáva odkrytý rebierkový strop a počas rekonštrukcie objavené mohutné stĺpy.

Materiálovo sa autori držali tvrdého betónu, dreva podláh a teplých očistených stien.

In the basics, the potential of the interior is influenced also by the building in which it is located. In the case of Flat N1M, this is the Trades House in Bratislava, designed in 1928 by architect Klement Šilinger. A polyfunctional object, home to the Nová scéna theatre, offered offices, shops and over seventy comfortable flats. At that time, it was one of the largest construction projects in the city. The current modification of the interior of one of the flats is therefore based on solid foundations. What the family of the inhabitants as well as the authors bring is an idea of a shared life. The appearance of the flat was formed during the reconstruction, but it was clear from the very beginning that the central “open space” should be a sufficiently large space for spending time together. For this reason, the wall of the bedrooms was pushed back, creating a clear cut in the flat, also functioning as a bookshelf and an art gallery. The kitchen and the closet are designed as an inserted monolith. The space acknowledges the uncovered ribbed ceiling and the massive pillars discovered during the reconstruction. In terms of materials, the authors use solid concrete, wooden floors, and warm clean walls.

Architekti Kilo / Honč tvrdia, že nechcú robiť architektúru pre časopisy. Ich riešenia nemajú výrazovo ohúriť, ale vymedziť priestor. Cieľom tu nie je dizajn, ale atmosféra. Keďže ich realizácie majú napriek tomu potenciál dostať sa do interiérových magazínov, znamená to, že tvorba atmosfér im ide. Ako príklad môže slúžiť byt 1903, ktorý už svojim názvom dáva najavo situáciu, do ktorej sa tu vstupuje. Vyše storočný obytný priestor v Trnave chceli autori čo najviac otvoriť a ideálne v ňom nechať vyniknúť vzniknuté „nič“.

Nesnažili sa vytvárať priestory, ale skôr priehľady, ktoré umožnia precítiť nadobudnutú vzdušnosť.

Keď už niečo oddeliť, tak transparentnou stenou so závesmi. Prípadne premietacím plátnom, za ktorým je decentne skrytá policová špajza. Alebo priečkou, ktorá sa spúšťa od stropu a v presne stanovenej výške vytvára napätie a otázku, čo sa asi môže diať za ňou. Pri vstupe víta byt kuchyňou, v ktorej môžete hneď ostať, alebo sa priehľadmi nechať ďalej nalákať do útrob priestoru.

Architects Kilo / Honč claim that they do not want to create architecture for magazines. Their solutions are not intended to be stunning in their expression but rather to define the space. Their goal is not the design but the atmosphere. Given the fact that their projects still have a potential to get on the pages of interior magazines, it means that they are really able to create atmospheres.

Flat 1903 can serve as an example. Already the name gives an indication of the situation we are entering. The authors wanted to open up this over 100-year-old residential space in Trnava and let the created “nothing” shine. Rather than spaces, they tried to create views that make it possible to feel the new airiness. If it was necessary to separate something, a transparent wall with curtains was used. Or a projection screen, which subtly hides a shelved pantry. Or a partition wall, which descends from the ceiling to a very specific height, creating tension and raising the question of what could be happening behind it. Upon entry, the flat welcomes you with a kitchen where you can stay, or let the views pull you deeper into the space.

Jedna vec je postaviť na kopci vyhliadku, iná umožniť výhľad na mieste, kde to dlho nebolo možné. To je prípad vyhliadkovej veže na Devínskej Kobyle v Bratislave, ktorej parcela bola v minulom storočí (a režime) súčasťou neprístupnej zóny železnej opony. Dnes stavba opäť otvára impozantný pohľad do troch susedných krajín a je teda aj geopolitickým statementom k otvoreným hraniciam. Trojakosť výhľadu sa pritom premieta aj do pôdorysu stavby. Trojuholníkové podesty sa smerom nahor zväčšujú a vytvárajú dynamickú formu. Vyše dvadsaťmetrová veža s točitým schodiskom sa zdá byť stále v pohybe. Architekti Šebo Lichý, v spolupráci s Imrom Vaškom, rozšírili svoju projektovú činnosť z Dúbravky aj do verejného prírodného priestoru. V spolupráci so samosprávou sa snažia oživiť niekdajšiu zakázanú zónu. Nejde im len o územie s bufetovou kultúrou, ale o mestský výletný bod s pridanou hodnotou.

Zaujíma ich ďalšie využitie priestoru i pôvodných objektov. Idey programu má priniesť aj vyhlásená študentská súťaž.

It is one thing to build and observation tower on a hill, but quite another to provide views in a place where it hadn’t been possible for a long time. This is also the case of the observation tower on Devínska Kobyla in Bratislava. In the previous century (and regime), the plot where it stands was a part of the inaccessible zone of the Iron Curtain. Today, the structure opens up magnificent views of three neighbouring countries, and thus is also a geopolitical statement of open borders. The threefold character of the views is also reflected in the floor plan of the structure. Triangular landings increase in size as we come higher, and thus create a dynamic form. The tower of over twenty metres with a spiral staircase seems to constantly move. Šebo Lichý architects in cooperation with Imrich Vaško extended their project activities from Dúbravka also into the natural public space. In cooperation with the local government, they are trying to revive the former forbidden area. They do not want to create an area with a snack bar culture, but rather an urban trip destination with added value. They are interested in the new use of the space and original structures. Ideas of the programme should also arise from the announced student competition.

Nedokončenosť je súčasťou identity bratislavskej Petržalky. Prejavuje sa napríklad v torze centrálnej komunikačnej osi. Nedotiahnutý zámer však neznamená, že miesto neexistuje. Kolektív pedagógov a študentov VŠVU vstupuje do tejto situácie intervenciami v okolí Chorvátskeho ramena a poukazuje na špecifickú DNA tohto priestoru.

Zozbierané panely a betónové elementy na jednej kope demonštrujú notorický stav „work in progress“. Odliatok časti jednej z vychodených skratiek zvečňuje „partizánsky“ pohyb obyvateľov a upozorňuje na to, ako plánovaná električková trať zasiahne do vytvorenej ľudovej geometrie pohybu. Intervencia Terminál naznačuje budúcu prekážku vo forme dopravného mosta, zároveň je aj pobytovým miestom pri vode ramena. Celý projekt je výsledkom medziodborovej spolupráce, ktorý demonštruje prínosnosť stretu rôznych prístupov. Vynáša prácu z ateliéru do terénu a ukazuje tiež, že práve architektúra je dobrým komunikačným nástrojom a vhodnou platformou pre interdisciplinárnu výmenu.

Being unfinished is a part of the identity of Petržalka in Bratislava. This is expressed for instance in the torso of the central communication axis. However, an unfinished intention does not mean that the city does not exist. A group of teachers and students from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design approached this situation with their interventions surrounding the Chorvátske rameno arm and highlighted the specific DNA of this space. The collected panels and concrete elements in one pile demonstrate the infamous “work in progress” status. The casting of a part of one of the beaten short cuts immortalises the “partisan” movement of the inhabitants and draws attention to how the planned tramway will interfere with the movement geometry created by the people. The Terminal intervention indicates the future obstacle in the form of a transport bridge, and also functions as a place for spending time next to the water of the arm. The whole project is a result of an interdisciplinary cooperation demonstrating the contribution of joining several approaches. It brings the work from the atelier out into the field and also shows that architecture is a good communication tool and an adequate platform for an interdisciplinary exchange.

Postaviť budovu v centre mesta na úzkom pozemku, nepôsobiť pritom stiesnene a brať ohľad na okolostojace stavby. Zadanie pre kancelársku novostavbu v Nitre nebolo jednoduché a s tým zrejme súvisí fakt, že miesto bolo doteraz nezastavané. Teraz na ňom stojí štvorposchodový štíhly solitér, ktorý komunikuje so svojimi susedmi – na jednej strane s barokovým Piaristickým kostolom a gymnáziom z 18. storočia a na druhej s administratívnou budovou z 80. rokov minulého storočia. Susedmi sú inšpirované proporcie, farebnosť i výzorové detaily.

Objektu je dopriaty odstup od ulice, čo umožňuje perspektívny pohľad chodca. Jeho oko tak spočinie na celopresklenej fasáde so showroomom.

Vstup z Veternej ulice vedie do prevýšenej haly a odtiaľ cesta prúdi do kancelárií. Odstúpené štvrté podlažie uvoľňuje priestor pre terasu.

Z nej sa ponúka pohľad na strechy mesta a večer na vysvietený susedný kostol. Celá okenná časť objektu je otočená k piaristom, samotné okná chcú podľa tvorcov pôsobiť ako obrazy bez rámov.

Constructing a building in the city centre in a narrow plot without a cramped feeling while respecting the surrounding structures – the assignment for the new office building in Nitra was not easy, and that is also the reason why the plot has been empty until now. Now there is a four-storey slim solitary building, communicating with its neighbours – the baroque Piarist church and grammar school from the 18th century on one side, and an office building from the 1980s on the other. The neighbours inspired the proportions, colours, and details of the design. The structure has been granted a distance from the street, which enables passers-by to view it in perspective. Their eyes will thus focus on the glazed façade with the showroom. The entrance from Veterná street leads into a tall hallway, from where the journey leads to the individual offices. The recessed fourth storey makes room for a terrace, which offers views of the city roofs and in the evening also of the illuminated neighbouring church. The whole part of the object with the windows is turned towards the Piarists, and authors say that the windows intend to resemble frameless paintings.

Navrhovať nový viacposchodový dom v centre mesta znamená okrem hľadania vhodného a zároveň zaujímavého výrazu aj jeho citlivé zasadenie do existujúceho kontextu. Polyfunkčný objekt „The Corner“ v Bratislave od architektov z ateliéru BKPŠ je príkladom zvládnutia tohto dvojakého zadania. Objekt nielenže vypĺňa roky otvorenú prieluku, ale hľadí pritom na bezprostredných susedov – Bellušovu Fakultu architektúry, Karfíkovu Fakultu potravinárskej technológie či eklektickú rohovú budovu Jozefskej ulice a nadväzujúcu nižšiu zástavbu. Cieľom projektu bol mestský dom či moderný palác, ktorý by mal nadväzovať na stavebnú kultúru mesta. Svoju vlastnú identitu komunikuje najmä uličnou fasádou so šikmými plochami – tá je okrem riešenia svetlotechnických či protihlukových parametrov jasným poznávacím znakom novostavby, fyzicky sceľujúcej živú časť centra. Pri pohľadoch z prúdiacej dopravy je dom raz stenou, raz skleným priečelím, zrkadlí sa v protiľahlom objekte a v priebehu roka nadobúda rôzne atmosféry.

Designing a new multi-storey house in the city centre is connected not only with the search for an adequate and interesting expression, but also its sensitive inclusion into the existing context.

The polyfunctional object in Bratislava called “The Corner” by architects from the BKPŠ office is an example of mastering this two-fold assignment. Not only does the object fill in a gap site which was open for years, but it also takes into consideration its immediate neighbours – the Faculty of Architecture by Belluš, the Faculty of Food Technology by Karfík, or the eclectic corner building in Jozefská street and the connected lower structures. The goal of the project was to build a town house or a modern palace following the city’s construction culture. It communicates its own identity especially through the street façade with slanted surfaces – besides daylight and anti-noise parameters, it gives the new building a distinguishing feature, physically uniting the living part of the city. Looking at it from the flowing traffic, first it appears as a wall, then as a glass frontage, it is reflected in the object standing opposite and gets various atmospheres throughout the year.

Rast miest spôsobuje, že niekdajšie industriálne zóny sa stávajú súčasťou širších centier. Otázkou je, ako sa naloží s ich existujúcou zástavbou. Na pozemku bývalej cvernovej továrne v Bratislave vzniká celý nový urbanistický celok a súčasťou projektu je obnova pamiatkovo chránenej pôvodnej pradiarne. Cieľom rekonštrukcie tohto príkladu industriálnej stavebnej kultúry zo začiatku 20. storočia bol návrat k jeho autentickému výrazu. Kľúčové bolo odstránenie dobových nánosov. V budove pradiarne boli obnovené veľkorysé halové priestory, vrátil sa výraz pôvodných okien a na vnútorných stĺpoch aj detail secesnej výzdoby. Budova pradiarne je spojená s objektom bývalej „silocentrály“, ktorá bola pôvodne energetickou jednotkou továrne.

Prepája ich transparentná presklená konštrukcia s novým schodiskom, vedúcim na všetky podlažia. Vynovená industriálna pamiatka ponúka administratívne i obchodné priestory a svojou halou umožňuje pohyb medzi Svätoplukovou ulicou a vzniknutým námestím novej štvrte Zwirn.

The growth of cities means that former industrial zones become part of wider city centres. The question is how to deal with their existing buildings. On the plot of the former thread factory in Bratislava, a whole new urbanistic complex is being created, and the project includes the refurbishment of the original protected monument of the spinning mill. The goal of the reconstruction of this example of industrial construction culture from the beginning of the 20th century was to give it its authentic expression back. It was key to remove deposits from the past. Inside the spinning mill building, generous hall spaces were renovated, the appearance of the original windows was returned, and interior pillars also got the original detail of Art Nouveau decorations.

The spinning mill building is connected with the building of the former engine house, which used to be the power unit of the factory. They are connected by a transparent glass structure with a new staircase leading to all storeys. The renovated industrial monument offers office and retail spaces, and its hall enables movement between Svätoplukova street and the new square of the new neighbourhood called Zwirn.

Zadanie znelo vytvoriť v existujúcom, pôvodne meštianskom dome z 20. rokov minulého storočia priestor pre degustáciu likéru a ginu. Keďže objekt sa nachádza na promenáde kúpeľov v Trenčianskych Tepliciach a samotný kúpeľný produkt má liečivý základ (bylinky), architekti sa chytili tohto ozdravného motívu. Nová prevádzka do ulice prehovára vizážou lekárne, obchodík s bielym vnútorným obkladom a jednoduchým regálom s fľašami skutočne pripomína predajňu liečiv. Kontrastne sa správajú ďalšie dva priestory Likerky. Miestnosť kaviarne dýcha tlmenou, zemitou atmosférou, ktorú tvorí mäkké sedenie, zrkadlá a závesy. Finále vytvára „divadelný“ priestor výroby, ktorá sa neskrýva, ale, naopak, preskleniami otvára pohľad na vyleštené stroje a sudy. Jeden objekt tak ponúka tri odlišné vnútorné svety. Program návštevníka pokračuje na jednoduchej terase, orientovanej do mestského parku. Vonkajšie sedenie hostí sa stáva súčasťou promenády a prispieva tak k žiaducemu spoločenskému charakteru tohto miesta.

The assignment was to create a space for liqueur and gin tasting in an existing town house from the 1920s. Because the object is located on the spa promenade in Trenčianske Teplice, and the spa product itself has a medicinal base (herbs), architects decided to use this curative theme. The new establishment approaches the street with the appearance of a pharmacy, and the little shop with white tiling and simple shelving with bottles really does resemble a shop with medicines.

This contrasts with two other spaces of Likerka.

The room of the café has a dimmed earthy atmosphere formed be soft seating, mirrors, and curtains. The finale is created by the “theatrical” production space, which is not hidden but glazed, opening up views of polished machines and tanks. One object thus offers three separate internal worlds. The programme of the visitor continues on a simple terrace turned towards the town park. The outdoor seating for visitors becomes a part of the promenade and contributes to the desired social character of the place.

Navrhovanie budov škôl na Slovensku, bohužiaľ, stále nepatrí medzi frekventované zadania pre architektov. Nároky a spôsoby vzdelávania sa pritom v posledných desaťročiach radikálne zmenili, no výučba stále prebieha v konzervatívnych priestorových pomeroch. Možným predpokladom pre výnimku je vstup privátneho investora.

To je prípad Súkromnej základnej školy Guliver v Banskej Štiavnici. Architekti si spoluprácu s klientom odskúšali už na oceňovanej budove materskej školy. Riešením rozsiahleho školského komplexu pre 180 žiakov postúpili na vyšší level.

Pozemok v industriálnej zóne mesta sa premenil na vzorový areál, v ktorom architekti mohli realizovať svoje predstavy a koncepty. Nejde len o skutočne veľkorysé vybavenie v podobe plaveckého bazénu, multifunkčnej telocvične, športového ihriska či zeleného i betónového školského dvora pre spoločné aktivity. Vnútro školy je presvetleným miestom bez temných chodieb a šatní, v klastrovom systéme učební je umožnený živý kontakt učiteľov a žiakov.

Unfortunately, designing school buildings is still not a frequent assignment for architects in Slovakia. The demands and methods of education have changed radically over the last decades, but teaching is still happening in conservative spatial conditions. A possible opportunity for an exception is provided by the involvement of a private investor. This is the case of the Guliver private primary school in Banská Štiavnica.

Architects have already tried the cooperation with the client on an award-winning nursery school building. By designing a school complex for 180 pupils, they got to a new level. A plot in the industrial part of the city has been transformed into a model school grounds where architects could realise their ideas and concepts.

This is not only about very generous facilities in the form of a swimming pool, a multifunctional gym, a sports ground or green as well as concrete school grounds for common activities. The interior of the school is a bright place without dark hallways and locker rooms, and the cluster system of classrooms enables a live contact of teachers and pupils.

The Slovak Chamber of Architects is a self-governing professional non-entrepreneurial legal person based in Bratislava with a delegated performance of public administration. It was established by Act of the Slovak National Council No. 138/1992 on authorised architects and authorised construction engineers. Its activities are funded from its own resources without state subsidies. It is a member of the Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE, www.ace-cae.eu) and the European Network of Architects’ Competent Authorities (ENACA, www.enaca.eu). Besides the tasks specified by law, the Slovak Chamber of Architects also verifies competition conditions of design contests in the field of architecture and provides inviting parties with expert assistance when organising public competitions and their evaluation, and organizes the CE ZA AR Prize for Architecture of the Slovak Chamber of Architects.

Slovenská komora architektov je samosprávna stavovská právnická osoba nepodnikateľskej povahy so sídlom v Bratislave s preneseným výkonom štátnej správy. Bola zriadená zákonom Slovenskej národnej rady č. 138/1992 Zb. o autorizovaných architektoch a autorizovaných stavebných inžinieroch. Svoju činnosť financuje z vlastných príjmov bez štátnych dotácií. Je členom Architektonickej rady Európy (ACE www.ace-cae.eu) a súčasťou siete príslušných orgánov v architektúre (ENACA www.enaca.eu). Slovenská komora architektov okrem iných zákonom stanovených úloh overuje súťažné podmienky súťaží návrhov v oblasti architektúry a poskytuje vyhlasovateľom odbornú pomoc pri organizovaní a vyhodnocovaní verejných súťaží, stará sa o stavebnú kultúru a harmonické utváranie územia a sama zabezpečuje súťaž o Cenu Slovenskej komory architektov CE ZA AR.
