At Inspira, we aim to empower healthier communities by creating the highest quality and most desirable patient experience in our region. We are proud to honor and congratulate Inspira Medical Center Vineland’s Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Progressive Care Unit (PCU), who have both been awarded a gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence by The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).
This year marks the fourth gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence for Vineland’s Cardiac ICU, and the first gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence for Vineland’s PCU. The Beacon Award for Excellence recognizes unit caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes and align practices with AACN’s six Healthy Work Environment Standards. This national
recognition is a testament to our team’s commitment to exceptional patient care, and a healthy work environment. As a leading health care organization in South Jersey, it’s an honor to receive this accolade from such a notable industry organization.
The Cardiac ICU and PCU at Inspira Vineland exemplify a high standard of patient care, and each member of these two teams should be proud of this tremendous accomplishment and their critical role in delivering positive patient outcomes for our community. Please join us in congratulating these individuals on earning the gold-level Beacon Award of Excellence.
"There can be no greater asset to the R.N. than the P.C.T. who is at their side and in sync with all that is needed for the patients assigned to their area. Today, I watched Hailey and my nurse work like a well-oiled machine. Hailey was there to accomplish any of the tasks that Jeremy needed help with and yet at times well ahead of any help asked for. In my room alone Hailey has everything done for me before I could even ask. But more importantly, Hailey would arrive, and we would have a conversation, about things other than medicine. I don’t think she knows how refreshing that is when your whole life has suddenly turned into the diagnosis of cancer and the multitude of tests and medicines thrown at you. To just forget reality if only for a few minutes and feel normal again is priceless. Thank you, Hailey, for all that you do!" - Patient
Inspira is committed to delivering the best possible patient outcomes to create healthier communities in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. That commitment to quality, safety and compassion shows in every aspect of what we do, which is why we are proud to honor and congratulate the Inspira Medical Center Elmer Labor and Delivery team for being re-designated as a Baby-Friendly birthing center by Baby Friendly USA.
As one of the only Baby-Friendly designated centers in South Jersey, it’s an honor to receive this redesignation from this prestigious group. The redesignation demonstrates the adherence to a high level of quality care standards for breastfeeding mothers and their babies — standards set by the World Health Organization and UNICEF.
The Maternity services team at Inspira Elmer have truly set an exemplary level of care for moms and newborns, and each member of the team should be proud of their achievements. Please join us in congratulating this team on earning the BabyFriendly re-designation.
Have you been working hard at trying to improve your health and wellness? Or have you not quite been able to get started? Either way, a Health Risk Appraisal (HRA) is a perfect place to start!
Whether you are on your Wellness Journey or you are just starting to think about it, the Healthy Life HRA will show you how your lifestyle choices affect your health and give you resources to help you learn what you can do to be healthier and live a longer life!
Beginning on March 1, 2023, all Inspira Employees will have the option to complete an HRA. The HRA is an optional and confidential personal wellness tool, which is used to estimate and describe an individual’s state of health. Click here to complete your HRA.
• Inspira has selected Global Health Metrics (Healthy Life HRA) to administer the health risk appraisal for employees. Inspira will not have access to any personal health information. This is a confidential tool to help you navigate your way to a healthier lifestyle.
• The HRA is a web-based application, which may be accessed using any smart phone, or computer.
• The HRA takes less than 15 minutes to complete and includes questions regarding health indicators such as nutrition, stress, smoking, seat belt use, and exercise. In addition, physiological data such as weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol are used.
• After completing the HRA, you will immediately receive a confidential personal report and a Physician/ Provider report.
• Resource links, health guidelines, an action plan and educational information are also available on your personal report.
• Employees are encouraged to complete the HRA three times during 2023.
The HRA tool will help you assess your physical and mental health:
Physical Health:
• Cardiorespiratory Risk
• Body Weight Risk
• Stress Risk
• Sleep Risk
• Nutrition Risk
Mental Health:
• Depression Risk
• Burnout Assessment
• Anxiety Risk
• If you complete the HRA before March 31, 2023, you will be entered in a drawing to win a $75 gift card to ShopRite (3 winners will be selected).
• All employees who complete the HRA will receive loyalty points through Living the Promise.
• 2023 Personal Wellness Tool Objective: To complete the HRA, create awareness of health risks, make behavior changes and retake the HRA to see improvements. Employees are encouraged to complete the HRA three times during 2023 so that they can track improvements over time.
At Inspira, we recognize that the recent burden on healthcare workers may have taken a toll on their personal health. To support employees on their own wellness journey, our Employee Health and Wellness team will be offering Wellness Days for all Inspira employees. These Wellness Days are designed to help employees create an awareness of key personal health indicators through free health screenings, interactive wellness activities and wellness education.
In February, Inspira hosted Wellness Days for our EMS teams. These events included health screenings (blood pressure, cholesterol, pulmonary function, BMI, functional movement assessments), strength training/flexibility/injury prevention demos, pet therapy, education/support resources, massage therapy, interactive wellness services and a personal health risk assessment tool. Staffing resources were provided by our nurses, registered dietitians, exercise physiologists, and physical therapists.
Keeping our employees at the center of all we do, Inspira has a Total Rewards philosophy that includes five cornerstones of offerings: Benefits; Rewards & Recognition; Career Development; Work-Life; and Compensation. Our Employee Health & Wellness program is one such component of our Total Rewards Program.
A recent item that landed in the Solved (green) section of the Learning Board for our Inspira Medical Group (IMG) Women Services offices was a stickie note that was titled “Depo- Provera Injections Adverse Reaction”. In mid-October, our IMG Cumberland Salem OB/GYN office reported two patients experiencing an adverse drug reaction moments after receiving their DepoProvera injections. Following investigation of the two events, it was identified the medications had the same lot number and expiration date. Both adverse drug reactions were reported via FDA MedWatch, filling pharmacies were notified, an immediate Safety Message was communicated in an SBAR format via email, it was added to the office Learning Board and was reinforced on the Daily Safety Briefing and during office morning huddles across all IMG OB/GYN offices.
Two weeks later, a patient presented to one of our Gentle Beginnings offices for her Depo-Provera injection. Applying a Questioning Attitude, Sandy Flynn, LPN, took a STAR moment to Validate and Verify the medication lot number and expiration date, remembering the recent Safety Message shared at morning huddle. Both the lot number and expiration date matched the previously shared information. Sandy, leading with safety first in decision-making, informed the patient of the previous adverse drug reactions. The patient was thankful for Sandy’s attention to detail and prevention of a potential adverse drug reaction. The patient returned the medication to her pharmacy and was provided a
new Depo injection. Had Sandy not led with safety first in decision-making or taken a STAR moment to Validate and Verify the lot number and expiration date, the patient could have potentially experienced an adverse drug reaction resulting in preventable harm.
Beth Anne Rambo, director of Ambulatory Quality and Patient Safety shared,
“Our practices work together and are empowered to speak up for safety. That shows through this event. It truly highlights the importance of shared learnings, the application of our High Reliability Behavior of Applying a Questioning Attitude, use of our High Reliability Tool Validate and Verify, and the impact cascading of Safety Messages can have for our patients. I’m so proud of our teams!”
A recent item that landed in the Solved (green) section of the Learning Board for Patient Experience across the system was a stickie note that was titled “Press Ganey Patient Experience Text Message Surveys”.
Jim Cooper, AVP of Patient Experience shared,
“Prior to go-live for text message surveys, our team noticed an issue during the final review of the proposed messaging, which patients would receive via text. Our very own Desire’ Alicia noticed inconsistencies with the translations from English to Spanish when it came to the “Opt Out” and “REPLY” options to the survey."
Once the issues were identified, the Patient Experience team used ARCC (ASK a question, Request a Change, Communicate a CONCERN, Chain of Command) to reach a resolution.
Dawn Davis, director of Patient Experience, working alongside Zach Nardelli, Advanced Analytics programmer, were able to work with the rest of the Patient Experience team to:
• ASK A QUESTION to the vendor: “Why are the translations inconsistent?”
• REQUEST A CHANGE to the vendor: “Can you please update the translations for accuracy?”
• COMMUNICATE A CONCERN to the vendor when a resolution was not immediate: “We have concerns with this going live in its current state as it can lead to confusion for our Spanish speaking patients.”
• CHAIN OF COMMAND: When it was learned that there were underlying technological issues that prevented a timely response, both the Patient Experience team at Inspira and the Account team at Press Ganey went through their respective chains of command to ask for assistance in reaching a resolution.
“The Patient Experience (PX) team has grown so much in 2022, expanding across all locations. As we move into 2023, the Learning Board is vital for connecting our entire PX team to our initiatives, eliminating siloed work efforts, staying accountable to progress, and sparking outside the box thinking to accomplish goals as a team," said Davis.
Constance Reeves, R.N., Maternity, Inspira Medical Center Elmer
Constance (Ricci) Reeves, R.N., Maternity, Elmer, was the admitting nurse of a patient that arrived after their water broke. Due to the patient receiving no prenatal care prior to arrival, Constance Paid Attention to Detail to ensure she was communicating clearly and asked the patient many Clarifying Questions. Constance took a STAR Moment when the patient stated that her placenta was “stuck” with her last C-Section. This was a concern to Constance, as this could potentially be a placenta accreta (a serious pregnancy condition that occurs when the placenta grows too deeply into the uterine wall).
Constance immediately notified Karen Krieg, D.O., Obstetrician, who contacted Benjamin DiJoseph, D.O., Obstetrician, and requested assistance prior to taking the patient to the OR.
Once in the OR, the care team identified the patient had an extensive placenta increta (condition where the placenta attaches more firmly to the uterus and becomes embedded in the organ's muscle wall), requiring a C-section followed by the surgical removal of the uterus (hysterectomy), and the massive transfusion protocol was implemented.
It was Constance’s high level of attention to detail during admission, the great communication between nursing and the providers, and excellent teamwork, that led to enhanced preparedness and saved this patient and the baby’s life.
Physical Therapist Jamie Miller, PT, DPT, CLT-LANA, Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill, has received her Manual Lymph Drainage/Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) Certification through the Lymphology Association of North America. CDT is highly researched based and is considered the gold standard treatment for chronic extremity lymphedema. Post mastectomy and other related conditions respond extremely well to this gentle, noninvasive, and highly effective therapy which incorporates manual lymphatic drainage, compression therapy, exercise, and skin care. Congratulations to Jamie on this high achievement in lymphedema management.
We are excited to announce that Take Your Child to Work Day is coming to Inspira this year! Take Your Child to Work Day is a national day that is designed to be more than just a career day. The program gives children a glimpse into the working life of their parents and to understand how the parents support the life of their child through their work. It is an educational program and is often found to serve as an inspiration to children in deciding their future career pathway. Take Your Child to Work Day demonstrates to children the value of their education; helps them discover the power and possibilities of work and family life; provides children a chance to share how they envision the future; and allows them to begin steps toward their goals in a hands-on and interactive environment.
Inspira’s Take Your Child to Work Day event will be held at designated areas at our Elmer, Mullica, and Vineland Medical Centers on Thursday, April 27, 2023 from 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. The event is open to all Inspira Health employee’s children ages 9-14.
We are looking for staff volunteers to lead fun team activities, and provide tours, as well as hands-on and interactive educational experiences that highlight the breadth of Inspira Health.
