A MESSAGE FROM

Amy Mansue

In 2023, Inspira Health experienced significant growth, owing in part to the extensive network of collaborators with whom we interact daily.

I’m happy to share that we’ve continued to make progress on our mission of providing South Jersey residents with more access to quality health care with new locations, providers, services and community resources. Early in the year, we celebrated the topping off of our Woodbury redevelopment project, which will result in a satellite emergency department and behavioral health unit.

We also completed a number of renovations and updates at Inspira Medical Center Vineland, including expanded pre- and postprocedural areas cath labs and interventional radiology suites, improved flow of patients with renovated holding areas for medical imaging, and improved emergency department facilities.

I couldn’t forget one of our biggest accomplishments of the year: finalizing the integration of Salem Medical Center into our health system. Now known as Inspira Medical Center Mannington, this hospital allows us to reach more community members in Salem County. We connected with the residents of our community with outreach events such as New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy’s Salem Family Festival, where we provided attendees with health screenings and education.

In the spirit of collaborative care, we grew our premier partnership with Rowan College of South Jersey (RCSJ) to continue educating future

health care professionals in our community. In May, we completed and opened the Inspira Health Sciences Center, which is home to the new Allied Health and Respiratory Therapy program. We also broke ground on our Nursing and Health Professions Center expansion project and introduced the Pathway to Nursing, which offers current and aspiring Inspira employees the opportunity to save big while earning their B.S.N.

Inspira remained committed to our staff members in 2023, as evidenced by the Philadelphia Magazine and NJ.com Top Workplace awards we were honored with. We strove to give back to our employees with programs like Schwartz Rounds, continuing education opportunities and improved safety protocols.

I want to thank our board of directors and their unwavering commitment to meeting the needs of our communities and our not-for-profit mission. I also want to thank our community stakeholders, volunteers, clinicians and especially our employees. Their tireless dedication, collaborative efforts, unwavering commitment to our values, and sheer passion for our mission were pivotal in driving our accomplishments. Without each of you, our achievements would not have been possible.

Be well and stay safe,

A MESSAGE FROM Warren Moore

To live our mission of improving the lives of all we serve, we must make continuous improvements in our processes and define our priorities as an organization. Through the hard work and commitment of our leaders and staff, we made tremendous progress and accomplished many goals in 2023—ultimately creating a safer and better experience for our patients, staff and community.

We improved our community’s access to quality care through partnerships like AMI at Inspira and Uber Health. We also improved the patient experience at Inspira by implementing a chatbot to triage scheduling issues, partnering with SENA Health to allow eligible patients to receive clinical care in their homes, and developing a program geared toward providers to help them understand their Patient Experience scores.

To improve provider and staff efficiency and relieve burnout, as well as treat more patients, we streamlined our processes and developed a centralized scheduling model at nine practices across the network.

Other process improvements included implementing a Clinical Documentation Improvement governance program, establishing new monitoring pathways for cardiac patient navigation and implementing a plan validation system that has identified 87 plans supporting our strategic work.

This year, we strengthened our commitment to workplace safety and addressing workplace violence. We launched several initiatives to keep Inspira employees and all who enter our buildings safe from harm. These efforts included education on situational awareness, an updated hospital access plan, increased security staffing with trained talent, the addition of a mobile security response team for ambulatory settings, engagement of two nationally recognized specialists to review our safety processes, enhanced emergency notifications and specialized active assailant training sessions. We also implemented the Strongline staff safety system at all of our hospitals to provide employees with a GPSenabled badge that serves as a discreet way to summon help if they feel threatened.

Looking forward to the next steps in our strategic growth, Inspira has embarked on the development of an enterprise-wide strategic planning effort that will help create a roadmap for the health system. This process will help to establish key objectives and priorities for Inspira in an ever-evolving health care landscape.

I’m proud to lead the Inspira family in providing our patients and community with the highest level of care.

COLLABORATING FOR Our Community

Pathway to Nursing

On October 10, Inspira Health, Rowan College of South Jersey (RCSJ) and Rowan University introduced the Pathway to Nursing program and broke ground on the Nursing and Health Professions Center expansion project. Pathway to Nursing students follow a “3+1” program, completing their first three years of education at RCSJ and their final year at Rowan University. Inspira employees save 50 percent on RCSJ’s tuition and fees for the first three years and will have their fourth-year tuition at Rowan University paid in full by Inspira Health. When combined with Inspira’s Tuition Reimbursement benefit, employees can earn a 4-year bachelor’s degree in nursing with little or no out-of-pocket expenses.

Inspira Creates Pathways Scholarship

In 2023, Inspira announced a new scholarship program as part of its premier partnership with RCSJ. Twenty-five $2,000 scholarships were awarded to students enrolled in nursing and health profession degree programs and healthcare-related certificate programs at RCSJ.

A Generous Donation to the Leading-Edge Cancer Center

Prompted by exceptional care while being treated for breast cancer, Milissa “Missy” Cosgrove and her husband Joe made a generous donation to Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill’s Leading-Edge Cancer Center to directly support the physical and mental wellbeing of patients and families. In honor of the donation, the Infusion Center was dedicated in the Cosgroves’ name. Additionally, they spearheaded a golf outing, which benefitted the cancer patient assistance fund.

Dispensary of Hope

Inspira’s Dispensary of Hope locations offer prescription medications free of charge to patients who do not have prescription coverage or cannot afford out-of-pocket expenses. In 2023, more than 118 South Jersey residents filled more than 306 prescriptions at the two Dispensary of Hope locations.

Maternal Health Pilot with Camden Coalition

Inspira’s Community Impact and Maternal Health teams partnered with the Camden Coalition and CompleteCare Health Network to pilot a program to increase access to prenatal care for underserved residents of South Jersey. The pilot connected more than 130 pregnant women in Cumberland County with prenatal care—many of whom did not have a prenatal care provider before coming to Inspira for emergency care.

Community Health Worker Expansion

We expanded our reach to the community through the Community Health Worker (CHW) program. CHWs are crucial public health workers that serve as a bridge between communities, health care providers and social service systems. The program enables us to meet people where they are and begin to address the social drivers of health that are negatively affecting our communities. CHWs assist individuals by coordinating care and making medical appointments; helping with access to interpretation, transportation, healthy food, childcare, career services and housing; working to create and reach health goals; providing culturally appropriate health education and information and more. A special thank you to Peter and Jane Galetto for their generous contribution, which provided the necessary funding to expand the Community Health Worker program in Millville.

COLLABORATING FOR Patient Experience

Our work is always focused on the health and safety of our patients. In 2023, Inspira patients shared their stories of care.

Gail Hagen

Gail was always someone who took care of her health. And nothing changed after she was diagnosed with cancer that led to surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Following her cancer treatment, she scheduled her first Medicare Annual Wellness Visit with Angel Hall, R.N., a member of Inspira’s Annual Wellness Visit team. This free program provides an opportunity for patients to answer questions about a wide range of topics, including their physical and mental health, living environment, health symptoms, medications or prescriptions, immunizations, food insecurity, transportation challenges and other issues.

“ The whole experience was more relaxing than having to travel,” she said. “For some people, transportation can be an issue. Plus, it felt less intimidating. Angel talked to me in plain language, on my level. It was like having a conversation with a girlfriend in my living room! I felt like I was better able to express myself. It felt safe.” Read More

David Kershaw

David knew it was time to visit the hospital when he experienced moderate chest discomfort that wasn’t resolving on its own. He was admitted to Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill, where Dr. Ashfaque Ali Unwala, a member provider with Cooper and Inspira Cardiac Care, performed a cardiac catheterization. Two of Kershaw’s arteries were nearly completely blocked and he was treated with angioplasty and stent placement.

As part of his recovery, Kershaw participated in cardiac rehabilitation at Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill.

“ The care from the doctors, nurses, techs and support staff has been amazing. Communication to me concerning test results, as well as planned procedures, was continuous and up to date. Every member of the team and staff was courteous, caring and available. My room was clean and well-attended. Support staff were ready to help in every aspect of my care.” Read More

Krista Smith

Krista, a U.S. Navy veteran, knows excellence when she sees it—which is why she was happy to share her appreciation for Blissa Usher, A.P.N., at Inspira Urgent Care Glassboro. Smith has visited the urgent care location a few times and is always impressed with the excellence that Usher strives for in her work.

“A.P.N. Usher is not only an excellent medical professional, but she’s also friendly, personable and really attentive,” Smith said. “When I need to visit the urgent care, she always greets me by saying, ‘I know you!’” Read More

Rebecca Baker

Rebecca found a lump when performing a breast self-exam. After a mass showed up on her mammogram, a biopsy confirmed a breast cancer diagnosis. Baker said the positive attitude and attention to detail she had always experienced at Inspira became more important to her than ever before. Her nearly year-long treatment plan would eventually include chemotherapy, surgery and radiation treatments. She said that through her many appointments, everyone, including doctors, nurses, technologists and support staff, treated her the same way.

“ I like to think of myself as a warrior,” Baker said. “I only cried two times after I found out I had cancer, and that was mostly about wanting to be around for my daughters, Taylor and Toni. Everyone on my care team was compassionate, outgoing and caring.” Read More

Shelly Voros

Shelly was no stranger to life’s challenges. After a tragic accident as a teen, she endured pain and trauma for many years that made everyday tasks difficult. As her physical challenges increased, her pain worsened and she started to gain weight. With guidance from her primary care provider, she decided to meet with Dr. Christopher Bashian to explore bariatric surgery.

Once I made the decision, it was lik e a switch flipped in my brain. I got up off the couch and started walking. I lost 15 pounds on my own before the surgery,” Voros said. “And Dr. Bashian is the only surgeon I’ve ever met who sits down, talks to you and waits to see if you have questions. He answered all of mine. He told me to call if I had more. He’s so cool. Nicest guy I’ve met in my life. Even now, he always seems excited to see me.” Read More

New Technology

First Catheter-directed Thrombectomy

Inspira Medical Center Vineland introduced a new minimally invasive procedure to remove blood clots on an urgent basis: catheter-directed thrombectomy. This procedure has been shown to decrease both short-term and long-term effects of pulmonary embolism compared to standard treatment options.

Intelligent Automation for Critical Care Chart Alerts

Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill implemented digital workers to review patient charts and determine who might be eligible for critical care management. In the first three months, the digital workers reviewed an average of 6,000 charts per month. In turn, our health care professionals were able to refer over 1,000 new patients to the critical care management program. This technology is not aimed at replacing health care professionals but freeing them up to focus on patient care by automating routine tasks.

Virtual Nurse Pilot

Inspira Medical Center Vineland launched a 12-week Virtual Nursing Pilot program in late October. This program involves a combination of virtual and in-person care professionals providing patient care. Virtual nurses working from a command center focus on the admission and discharge process as well as patient education, while in-person nurses focus on bedside shift assignments.

New Residency Programs

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency

This year, we introduced a new Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency program at Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill. This program allows clinicians to develop the skills they need to become successful physiatrists.

Psychiatry Residency

Inspira Medical Center Vineland introduced a Psychiatry residency program that builds on graduate medical education to prepare clinicians to provide advanced patient care and earn academic or other specialized positions along with board certification in psychiatry.

New Partnerships

AMI at Inspira

On June 12, we launched a partnership with Atlantic Medical Imaging (AMI) and Regional Diagnostic Imaging (RDI) at nine existing outpatient imaging locations across South Jersey. This venture allows Inspira to increase access to care, schedule studies more quickly, expand services and enhance the patient experience for all our patients.

Cooper and Inspira Neuroscience

Building on the success of Cooper and Inspira Cardiac Care, we announced another partnership between our health systems in July. Cooper and Inspira Neuroscience aims to improve local access to a comprehensive range of advanced neuroscience care, including surgical and nonsurgical services related to the brain, spinal cord and central nervous system.

Healing at Home with SENA Health

Inspira partnered with SENA Health to launch Healing at Home, an initiative that allows patients with certain diagnoses to receive care at home instead of in the hospital.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging

Inspira continues its journey to foster a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) for patients, employees, and everyone who crosses our threshold. Priorities this year included assessing the DEIB landscape and defining the work moving forward.

We partnered with the Exeter Group in early 2023 to help provide a comprehensive DEIB assessment using evidence-based and integrated data collection methods. Using surveys, interviews and focus groups, we heard from over 1,000 team members about what it is like to work at Inspira. The extensive assessment results will be used to inform the 2024 DEIB work plan.

To give staff a voice in this important work, we launched a DEIB Council to help drive organizational goals and priorities. The council is representative of our entire workforce— comprehensive of department, location and more.

We are looking forward to strengthening our commitment to DEIB in 2024 by continuing to enhance the employee and patient experience and improve the health and well-being of our community.
