Archer has always considered dedication to the community an integral part of its mission and central to the firm’s enduring success. We have traditionally maintained close ties to South Jersey and take great pride in giving back to the communities where we live and work. Over the years, the Inspira family has been committed to providing high quality care throughout the region and we are pleased to support their mission to improve the lives of all they serve.
A MESSAGE FROM THE
I want to extend my deepest gratitude for your continued support of Inspira Health. Tonight, as we gather to honor Dr. James E. George, we are reminded of the strength and resilience of our community and the incredible impact that compassionate care can have on lives. Dr. George’s journey, from his esteemed service as an emergency medicine physician to his inspiring embrace of art therapy during rehabilitation, exemplifies the dedication to healing that Inspira Health strives to uphold every day.
This past year has been one of tremendous growth and achievement for Inspira Health. We broke ground on the expansion of Mullica Hill Medical Center, expanded access to care with the opening of Inspira Medical Group Primary Care Millville and unveiled the state-of-the-art Inspira Health Center Woodbury Pavilion. These milestones, along with many other accomplishments, are a testament to our unwavering commitment to enhancing care for every individual in South Jersey.
Tonight, our focus is on the future—specifically, behavioral and mental health services. Proceeds from this year’s Grand Gala will directly support these vital services, allowing us to extend our reach and provide hope, healing and dignity to those in need. It is your generosity that makes these initiatives possible, and we couldn’t do it without you.
Thank you for standing with Inspira Health as we continue to advance health care for all. Together, we are creating a healthier, more compassionate future.
With gratitude,
Amy B. Mansue President & CEO
THE POWER OF ART THERAPY:
At Inspira Health, we believe in the profound impact of holistic care on the mind, body and spirit. One such approach is art therapy, an integral part of our behavioral health services. Through creative expression, patients can process emotions, reduce stress and find a path toward healing. For those navigating mental health challenges, art therapy offers a safe space to communicate feelings that may be hard to put into words.
Our inpatient behavioral health programs use art therapy as part of group sessions, where trained therapists guide participants through various artistic mediums. Patients discover new ways to cope with emotional and psychological stress through painting, drawing or other forms of visual expression. Beyond the therapeutic benefits of self-expression, art therapy improves fine motor skills, enhances problem-solving abilities and fosters a sense of accomplishment.
This unique form of therapy was life-changing for Dr. James E. George, the honoree of this year’s Grand Gala. After a traumatic brain and spinal cord injury in 2016, Dr. George turned to art therapy during his rehabilitation. With art, he found a creative outlet and therapy that aided his recovery.
Art therapy not only complements traditional therapies but also helps address the emotional aspects of rehabilitation. It is proven to reduce anxiety, alleviate depression and promote better sleep—key components of overall well-being. Tapping into creativity empowers our patients to move forward in their healing journeys and rediscover a sense of purpose.
Inspira is proud to incorporate art therapy as a vital part of our holistic care approach to behavioral and mental health care. The funds raised through this evening’s Grand Gala will further support programs like this, providing hope and healing for our community.
JAMES E. GEORGE, MD, JD
Inspira Health is proud to honor James E. George, MD, JD at our 2024 Grand Gala.
Dr. George has been involved in emergency medicine for nearly 50 years, but healthcare wasn’t his only interest. After receiving his undergraduate degree from Columbia University, he simultaneously enrolled in the University of Louisville Medical School and Law School. Attending medical school during the day and law school at night, he was able to complete the programs in four years, receiving both degrees with honors in the same year.
One of Dr. George’s proudest career accomplishments is being an early adopter of emergency medicine as a specialty. Dr. George began his emergency medicine career at Inspira Health’s former UnderwoodMemorial Hospital in Woodbury, NJ. He is a founding member of TeamHealth, an association of more than 20,000 clinicians throughout the country.
He served his community for decades as an emergency medicine physician until a devastating accident in 2016. He suffered a brain and spinal cord injury after a fall in his home, resulting in a coma and quadriplegia. He spent six months at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia where he regained partial functional use of his non-dominant left arm and leg, and limited use of his right arm and leg.
When he was introduced to art therapy during his in-patient rehabilitation stay at Magee, the miracle of art’s healing ability took hold in ways he never could have imagined.
Today, Dr. George is living a full life − enjoying his art, painting new pieces, and spending time with family and friends. His artwork can be seen in several Inspira Health facilities, including the entrance to the ER at Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill, the Inspira Health Foundation offices, and the new Inspira Health Center Woodbury.
BEHAVIORAL HEALTH AT INSPIRA:
Our commitment to behavioral health care extends beyond traditional treatment. We believe in creating holistic programs that not only address the clinical aspects of care but also nurture the emotional and personal growth of every patient. By offering a range of services and innovative approaches, we strive to ensure each individual receives the tailored support they need to thrive.
Amelia Holmes: A Story of Empowerment Through Diagnosis
Amelia’s story exemplifies the profound impact of Inspira’s behavioral health services. As a child, Amelia was always full of energy, constantly on the move and bursting with emotion. As she grew older, her parents, Amy and Bill Holmes, began to notice that Amelia’s challenges with focus, social interactions and behavioral issues were more complex than they initially realized. Although Amelia was diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) at 13, her family continued to search for answers, suspecting that there was more to her struggles.
After facing long waitlists at other centers, the Holmes family scheduled a consultation at Inspira Autism Diagnostic Center Woodbury. It was here that Amelia was finally diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, giving her and her family the understanding and validation they had been seeking for years. With this diagnosis, Amelia could access the tools and services necessary to help her flourish.
Amelia’s story exemplifies how Inspira’s behavioral health care is making a difference in the community. Launched to fill a critical gap in diagnostic services, the center provides timely evaluations and support for individuals across the autism spectrum. Previously, families in the region often faced long waits—sometimes over a year—for testing. The center now offers much-needed services, helping families find answers and gain access to crucial therapies and accommodations.
Innovative Programs for a Healing Environment
Inspira’s behavioral and mental health programs engage patients on multiple levels, recognizing that healing often requires more than medical intervention alone. Our programs include initiatives that enhance both patient care and employee wellbeing, reflecting Inspira’s holistic approach to mental health.
• Recreation Deck: Inspira’s updated recreation deck offers patients a safe space to engage in physical activities like basketball and gardening. These activities promote physical well-being and foster therapeutic connections between staff and patients. The outdoor setting provides an outlet for managing emotions and building rapport, helping patients on their path to recovery.
• Teen Lounge: The newly enhanced Teen Lounge at Inspira Health Center Bridgeton’s behavioral health unit provides a welcoming space for adolescent patients. The lounge offers teens a place to relax, interact and decompress in a supportive environment.
• Patient Prize Cart: Keeping patients motivated and engaged is essential to their treatment journey. The behavioral health units maintain a well-stocked patient prize cart with items like puzzles, snacks and personal care products. This initiative encourages participation in therapeutic groups while boosting patient morale throughout their stay.
• Therapy Dogs: Inspira brings in therapy dogs on employee wellness days to help reduce stress and promote mental health. These wellness initiatives are part of Inspira’s broader effort to create a positive, supportive work environment.
• Wellness Retreats: Staff well-being is a priority at Inspira. We sponsor wellness retreats for employees at Inspira Medical Center Mannington, offering a chance for reflection, relaxation and self-care. By nurturing the caregivers themselves, we help our staff remain energized and compassionate in their work with patients.
