Speak Up for Safety Great Catch of the Month Amy Beringer, R.N., Maternity, Mullica Hill “Amy Beringer identified that a physician had entered the C-Section room to assist with a delivery while wearing a splint on his hand. Amy was concerned because she knew that this physician was unable to wash his hands.

Amy used ARCC to escalate her concern to her assistant nurse manager, Peggy Stecklair, and stop the line. Had Amy not escalated this concern to stop the line, this physician could have helped deliver a baby with dirty hands.

Had Peggy not spoken up for safety to stop the line, this physician may have taken care of multiple patients that shift with dirty hands. Stopping the line prevents further unsafe actions from affecting our patients, colleagues, and community. That is why we must all use our HRO tools to stop the line when we see something unsafe.

Amy is a rock star! She identified two great catches in the same day (she also prevented hair clipping in the c-section OR), and she collects hand hygiene observations for us!”

Professional Achievement Cathy Vasquez, B.S.N., R.N., clinical trial manager and member of Inspira’s Clinical Research Office team, is the lead research nurse for the FUSE study (sponsored by Providence Medical Technology) and recently gave a presentation on best practices for recruiting and consenting study subjects during the National Investigator’s meeting held in Nashville, TN. The FUSE study is designed for patients that need to have 3 cervical-levels fused in their neck and evaluates the effectiveness of a Posterior Cervical Stabilization System (PCSS) and whether it improves patients’ fusion rates when used as part of Circumferential Cervical Fusion.

Working hand in hand with Rahul Shah, M.D., spine surgeon at Premier Orthopeadic Associates and the principal investigator on the study, Cathy plays a vital role in enrolling new patients and providing enrolled patients with high-quality service and follow up including post-operative management and scheduling for study-required imaging.

Providence asked Cathy to lead a monthly coordinator’s workshop as well as shared her contact information with struggling sites so they can reach out to her for mentorship.

“Recently Cathy helped a patient who had lost their insurance and was just going to quit the study and stop follow-up, but Cathy got it taken care of,” shared Sami Abate Ph.D., director of Clinical Research. “Cathy follows her patients closely and keeps them updated and educated. They are so comfortable with her care and skill, they often reach out for other medical needs.”

Clare Sapienza-Eck Honored

Named to NJBIZ 2021 Best 50 Women in Business List Join us in celebrating another Inspira employee whose contributions in health care have been noticed in the community.

NJBIZ honored Clare Sapienza-Eck, our chief strategy officer, in their 2021 Best 50 Women in Business list. The program recognizes women who are shattering stereotypes, and the glass ceiling, with the significant impacts they’re making on New Jersey business and the community at large.

As many of you may know, Clare is a passionate and dedicated health care industry veteran. With more than three decades of experience, she has served more than 25 years at Inspira Health through numerous strategic planning and business development positions. Most recently, in November 2020, Clare was appointed to the newly created role of chief strategy officer to advance Inspira’s strategic

initiatives and drive long-term growth, including the development of our new strategic plan. She was instrumental in the research, development and now early stages of rollout for our new plan, alongside other Inspira leaders, and we are fortunate to have her leadership as we embark on our organization’s next chapter.

Through her innovative thinking, deep understanding of health care and passion for growth, Clare has been at the forefront of Inspira’s extraordinary evolution and change. Her recognition is a true testament to the culture and patient-centric approach we are building at Inspira.

Inspira Medical Group Pulmonology Woodbury Shelia Johnson, manager of IMG Pulmonology in Woodbury, holds her department huddles daily via Teams so staff can attend from other sites.

During her department huddle, Shelia completes a look back and look forward on high-risk patients, staffing issues, days since last, network updates and a high-level overview from items reported on the Ambulatory Daily Safety Briefing. Staff are encouraged to bring safety concerns to the huddle, where they are reviewed and added to the Learning Board.

A recent item that moved from the new (red) section of the learning board to the solved (green) section of the learning board was Employee Recognition. “Wow Boards” have been an item on the Learning Board as of several months ago when the department was going through some significant staffing changes.

The team morale needed a positive boost, and the interim manager, Jaclyn Colvin, took the initiative to post the Living the Promise Shout Outs in the office where they could be seen by patients, providers and

staff. On Friday mornings, the Shout Outs are read during the team’s Huddle and a Living the Promise gift card is awarded to the person with the most Shout Outs or “Wows.” Team members have appreciated the acknowledgements and have been surprised at the things people notice that often go unsaid.

Toni Hall, surgical scheduler stated, “It’s encouraging, and it lets you know your coworkers appreciate you.” Another employee, Jenna Gaventa, receptionist, stated, “It’s nice to be recognized for stuff you do that normally goes unrecognized.”

“We have filled two boards thus far in Woodbury and have also filled a board in our Vineland office. The morale in the office has improved significantly with the addition of the Wow Boards. Employees are eager to share their appreciation for one another and look forward to hearing the praises of their colleagues each week.”

SICU Vineland During the 2021 Building and Sustaining a Just Culture for Leaders session, Susan Speero, nurse manager of the Vineland and Elmer ICU shared a recent item that landed on the solved (green section) of the team’s learning board.

Leading with a safety-first focus, Susan immediately implemented a weekly email sent every Friday to serve as one voice. The email completes a look back on the week compiling all information reviewed at huddles and

A second item that landed in the solved section of the learning board was a Bladder Scanner. Staff ARCCed up the concern that it was difficult to find a bladder scanner on the unit as there was only one available, and as a surgical floor, it is used quite often. The staff stated that they would spend so much time searching for the bladder scanner when they needed it, which could potentially lead to a delay in treatment. By ARCCing up the concern, the team was able to have a new bladder scanner approved and added to the unit.

Katherine Cosaboom, R.N., SICU staff nurse shared, “The learning board has been beneficial for staff to express concerns to leadership and for leadership to be able to track the progress of these concerns. This has improved the overall communication in coordination with our Employee Engagement Survey results.”

Inspira Physicians Honored with SJ Top Docs Award We never take for granted the immense talent and expertise within our network, working diligently to provide high-quality care and a seamless patient experience for South Jersey. So, it is with a tremendous amount of pleasure we acknowledge some of the exceptional Inspira-employed and affiliated physicians who have recently been recognized in our community for their outstanding work in medicine and the care they provided our patients throughout the pandemic.

Evelyn Balogun, M.D., medical director of Employee Health, Occupational Medicine and Urgent Care, and member of our COVID-19 Vaccine Steering Committee, received recognition from the Philadelphia Business Journal as part of its 2021 Leaders in Healthcare awards program. She is one of 17 health care providers in the region to be honored this year for their efforts throughout the pandemic.

Dr. Balogun was, and continues to be, instrumental in developing policies to address the safety of our employees, as well as for employees of local businesses who are covered by our occupational health services.

She provides key information about the virus to various audiences, ranging from Inspira employees and South Jersey area residents to school administrators and local clergy. Whether offering insight about coronavirus vaccines during an online video chat or hosting a virtual town hall for large groups, she has been viewed as a steady, calming force during such an unpredictable time. We at Inspira, and those in our community, are fortunate to have such a compassionate, approachable and experienced leader helping us navigate through the pandemic.

Lung Cancer Awareness Month

Innovative, Minimally Invasive Technology at Inspira Offers Earlier, More Accurate Lung Cancer Diagnoses When lung cancer is suspected, patients and their families want as much information as possible, delivered quickly and accurately, so a care plan can be put into motion immediately. With the new Monarch™ robotic bronchoscopy platform, Inspira can deliver that.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related deaths worldwide. “Lung cancer is often discovered later than is optimal, because it can have few, or often no, symptoms in its early stages. Better screening and technology advancements like navigational bronchoscopy can help identify the disease earlier, while it is more treatable. This gives our patients a higher likelihood of successful treatment,” said Charles Shieh, M.D., thoracic surgeon and medical director of lung cancer.

Navigational bronchoscopy uses a long, flexible, robot-assisted tube (endoscope) to help physicians view the inside of the lungs and more accurately retrieve a sample of any suspected cancer tissue. It is a minimally invasive approach that combines traditional views of the lungs with advanced software and 3D modeling of each patient’s unique anatomy.

Besides being highly accurate and reducing the need for more invasive or repetitive diagnostic procedures, navigational bronchoscopy has shown to reduce complications. These can include infection, bleeding, pain, and false diagnoses (whether negative or positive) which can arise from traditional, more invasive approaches.

“Navigational bronchoscopy allows us to make confirmed diagnoses without putting the patient through an open surgery, a needle biopsy or repeated procedures,” said Shieh. “It is easier for our patients and more accurate for clinicians. The ability to identify even small or hard-to-reach nodules means we can gather the specific information and the tissue sample we need in one simple outpatient procedure.”

“Inspira is among the first one hundred hospitals nationwide to adopt this technology so far,” said Shieh. “We are committed to excellence in patient care, and we continue to leverage cutting-edge technology to improve patient outcomes and patient satisfaction.”

Inspira’s patients can now receive the highest level of care available in the nation, without having to travel far, all while being seen by clinicians and care teams who live and practice in the region.

“Allowing patients to stay closer to home, seeing doctors they know, in the system they’re familiar with, can help ease their mind considerably.
