2022

Every Day INSPIRATION

This past year was one of growth and innovation for Inspira Health. We still continued to face challenges related to COVID, but we also began to emerge from the pandemic with a renewed sense of optimism.

Last year, our state-of-the-art hospitals celebrated the addition of a number of advanced procedures and technologies in cardiology, neurology, spinal surgery, oncology, physical therapy and more. We continued to deliver high-quality care to the residents of South Jersey. With patient safety always at the forefront of our minds, our work in 2022 demonstrated the principles of high reliability that we reach toward, day in and day out.

While our main goal is to continue providing high-quality care and support to our community, Inspira remains committed to our staff’s well-being, safety and personal growth. We welcomed a number of new staff members in 2022, including Dr. Tony Reed, our SVP, chief quality and safety officer, who is focused on achieving and expanding Inspira’s commitment to patient safety, quality and excellence. We also saw tremendous growth in our residency program with the implementation of six new residency tracks.

In order to serve even more members of our South Jersey community, we continued to expand services and staffing resources in our existing facilities, and also acquired a number of new locations. The acquisition of Salem Medical Center, an affiliate of Inspira Health, was perhaps the most significant addition to our growing network. This partnership allows us to serve the residents of Salem County with necessary health care resources and services that are both outstanding and close to home.

Salem Medical Center, an affiliate of Inspira Health, wasn’t the only addition to our locations in 2022. We also introduced a number of EMS locations, an endoscopy center at Vineland, a sleep center at Woolwich, a primary care location in Upper Deerfield and a LIFE center in Williamstown. And we’re continuing to broaden our reach as we work toward opening a new health center in Deptford and redeveloping our existing health center in Woodbury.

It’s important to note that none of this is meaningful if it doesn’t meet the needs of those we serve. To that end, our community impact initiatives helped deliver care to those who need it most through Community Health Workers, mobile van screenings and the Food Farmacy+. In 2022, we also conducted a Community Health Needs Assessment, which helped identify critical health care barriers in our region and gave us direction for our community focus points for 2023 and beyond.

There were many more milestones to recognize from the past year, and much to look forward to in 2023, when we will be celebrating 10 years of service in South Jersey as Inspira Health. I want to thank our entire Inspira family for their professionalism, compassion, expertise and dedication this year. I also want to thank our patients for entrusting Inspira with your, and your families’, care.

THE PATIENT EXPERIENCE

Bringing Convenient Care to the Residents of South Jersey

In 2022, Inspira Health made significant progress toward our vision of a re imagined patient experience. I am excited to share highlights of the enhancements that are already benefiting the patients we serve.

We delivered the following in 2022:

Collaboration: The first step on our journey was to listen and partner. The Inspira team gained energy and ideas by engaging with our patients and families to better understand their needs.

Better communication in the emergency department (ED): In the first full year of our Communication Liaison Program in our EDs, we have seen tremendous success. A team of two nurses round on patients to ensure effective communication between patients, families and the care team. Between 2020 and 2022, the patient experience score jumped from 34th percentile to 77th percentile network-wide

A more seamless discharge: Our new discharge lounges at Mullica Hill and Vineland mark more patient-centric improvements. They provide comfortable and relaxing settings for patients to receive their discharge and medication instructions and review their care plan, ensuring a smooth transition to home. The lounges have proved to be a huge satisfier.

Bereavement resources: Our Patient and Family Advisory Councils let us know there were inadequate bereavement resources for our patients’ loved ones, so with input from our councils, we organized and enhanced bereavement resource packets.

Continuous feedback: The councils also supported our move to text message patient satisfaction surveys and helped develop the messaging that asks and encourages patients to complete the survey.

Going digital while maintaining the human touch: Inspira has reaffirmed our commitment to being a patient-centered organization by creating a digital-first environment. Now, we’re able to use technology to meet people where they are, with resources like telemedicine appointments for primary care, urgent care and mental health needs, as well as the MyInspira app.

None of this would be possible without the extraordinary Inspira workforce, who come to work each and every day to provide a safe and compassionate patient experience that improves the health and well-being of the communities we serve. It is a privilege for me to work beside them.

INNOVATION Inspiring

At Inspira, we’re striving to bring the best, most innovative care to our patients in South Jersey every day. We introduced a number of new technologies and treatment methods in 2022.

MINIMALLY INVASIVE SPINE SURGERY

Inspira introduced this cutting-edge robotic surgery platform that uses advanced intra-operative navigation and imaging technology to improve efficiency and accuracy in orthopedic and neuro-spinal procedures. This allows surgeons to visualize, plan and navigate spinal surgery in real time, without requiring multiple X-rays during a procedure. Learn more.

ELECTIVE PERCUTANEOUS CORONARY INTERVENTION (PCI)

In early 2021, the New Jersey Department of Health made it possible for community hospitals to perform elective PCI procedures—scheduled procedures intended to open blocked coronary arteries with stents in patients with coronary artery disease. In 2022, Inspira Medical Centers Mullica Hill and Vineland began offering elective PCIs to provide patients with safe, high-quality care in their community without the need to schedule a follow-up procedure or be transferred to a tertiary care facility.

RADIOEMBOLIZATION (Y90) FOR LIVER CANCER

This year, Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill introduced a highly effective treatment option for patients with liver cancer: radioembolization, also known as Y90. This treatment method uses high doses of targeted radiation to destroy the cancer cells in the affected area of the liver without damaging the healthy cells around them. Learn more.

BLOOD FLOW RESTRICTION THERAPY (BFRT)

Inspira’s Rehab Care program introduced a technique to help patients make greater strength gains while lifting lighter loads during physical and occupational therapy. BFRT is conducted using a tourniquet on the patient’s arm or leg to cause brief, intermittent occlusion of arterial and venous blood flow. This method can be used on a wide variety of patients recovering from surgery. Learn more.

NEW GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS

This year, Inspira celebrated having one of South Jersey’s fastest-growing residency programs. We recognized our residents with our Born to Care campaign and even heard from some residents directly.

NEW PARTNERSHIPS

This year, Inspira announced a premier partnership with Rowan College of South Jersey (RCSJ) to expand their Nursing and Health Professions programs and improve the health of the communities we serve. This collaboration provides priority clinical experience to support nursing, behavioral and allied health students at the RCSJ’s Cumberland and Gloucester campuses, propelling local talent into health care careers.

Inspira will invest $2 million over 10 years in this partnership to support student scholarships for those pursuing health care occupations and fund future program development. This partnership will also provide new opportunities for Inspira employees to further their education and training—they will receive a 50 percent discount on tuition at RCSJ.

New graduate medical education programs added in 2022 include:

• Psychiatry Residency

• Emergency Medicine Residency at Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill

• Internal Medicine Residency at Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill

• Transitional Year Residency at Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill

PATIENTS

Our work is always focused on the health and safety of our patients. In 2022, some Inspira patients shared their stories of care at Inspira.

KELLI SILVERS

Kelli Silvers faced two consecutive traumatic injuries that threatened to derail her daily life, her career and a hobby she loved. But she faced recovery with the help of Inspira’s orthopedic surgeons and physical therapy team. “Inspira got me back to work, got me back to my activities. They got me back to myself.”

MISSY COSGROVE

In 2021, Missy Cosgrove received news that she had breast cancer. With her family, friends and the team at Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill’s LeadingEdge Cancer Center by her side, Missy faced her diagnosis head-on and is in remission today.

ALYSA

Alysa worked hard to manage recurring episodes of clinical depression for decades. She first came to Inspira for treatment in 2020, when she participated in the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), followed by traditional outpatient therapy. Alysa believes that Inspira gives her everything she needs to thrive, including providers who work in collaboration with each other.

Todd Kinder had quit smoking before, but was never able to stick with it. That is, until he visited the Inspira Quit Center. His last cigarette was March 8, 2022. The program helped Todd quit for the longest period of time since he was 18 years old, with resources like nicotene replacement therapies and counseling and support sessions.

At age 37, Rachael Tiedman’s weight was starting to affect her daily life, mental health and relationships with loved ones. She knew she needed a change, so she contacted Dr. Keith Kreitz, director of bariatric surgery at Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill. Bariatric surgery gave Rachael a new lease on life: “I am so excited about life now. I look, and more important, feel, amazing.”

In the summer of 2016, Jessica Carroll gave birth to her son six weeks early and 150 miles away from her home. He was transferred to the Deborah F. Sager NICU at Inspira Medical Center Vineland. Not only did the NICU team take care of their son, they also taught Jessica and her husband, Brendan, so much about taking care of a newborn and themselves. Their son is now six years old and very healthy. “I am forever grateful for every person at Inspira, and all that the hospital did.”

THE SOUTH JERSEY COMMUNITY

Inspira is dedicated to giving back to the South Jersey community in a myriad of ways through our Community Impact programs, from helping residents get screened for health conditions to providing meals to those experiencing food insecurity and more.

COMMUNITY HEALTH NEEDS ASSESSMENT

In 2022, Inspira conducted a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) to determine the issues affecting the health of our community. Moving forward, we will implement strategies consistent with the CHNA results to address these needs and improve the health outcomes and overall well-being of those living in our region. Needs determined by this year’s CHNA include:

• COVID-19

• Mental and Behavioral Health

• Accessibility, Availability and Affordability of Care

• Accessibility to Children’s Health Care

• Food and Diet

Food Farmacy+

Since its inception in 2020, the Food Farmacy has expanded to help even more residents of South Jersey who are facing food insecurity. This year, we addressed one of the barriers to access healthy food—lack of transportation—by partnering with DoorDash to provide free delivery to Inspira patients. Our Food Farmacy+ locations also now carry fresh produce, dairy, eggs, frozen meats, personal hygiene items and baby items including diapers and baby shampoo.

NARCAN Distribution

This lifesaving drug can reverse the effects of opioid overdose and is typically carried by first responders. Inspira has worked to distribute NARCAN throughout the South Jersey community to use in emergency situations. We distributed 850 doses in 2022.

Community Health Worker Program

At Inspira, our Community Health Worker (CHW) program helps members of our community address their social determinants of health and reduce their barriers to care. In 2022, the CHW program helped 128 patients overcome barriers to health such as follow-up care, housing expenses, access to healthy food, counseling services and more.

Mobile Unit

This year, Inspira began to leverage our mobile health unit for community outreach and screenings. Sports Medicine conducted 41 preventive cardiac screenings over five events throughout South Jersey in 2022 and plans to expand this program in 2023 are underway.

Deterra Distribution

Deterra is a method for safe at-home medication disposal that can reduce environmental impacts and prevent drug addiction by deactivating unused prescription drugs. Inspira distributed over 4,000 pouches in 2022.

Since its inception in 2012, the Deborah F. Sager Memorial Fund has donated over $700,000 in total to the NICU to make miracles happen. There has been strong support for the memorial fund coming from individuals and local businesses through the years, including Century Bank ($34,500) and Wawa ($120,000). The Deborah F.
