Además el pasado año el Arca Llegat Jueu colaboró con el Ajuntament de Palma en la instalación de unas pequeñas baldosas conmemorativas en calles de Ciutat que antes formaban parte del Call: Jaime II, Sant Bartomeu, Pelleteria y Posada de Montserrat. En 2007, el Arca Llegat Jueu fue galardonado con el premio Jaume II por el Consell de Mallorca en honor a su trabajo en la promoción de la historia de Mallorca. “TODAVÍA EXISTE MUCHA IGNORANCIA SOBRE LA HISTORIA JUDÍA DE MALLORCA” Albert Bonnín Fiol, pese a venir de una familia 'católica de toda la vida', es descendiente de judíos conversos. En su papel como Presidente de Memoria del Carrer ha podido ayudar a muchísima gente que iba en busca de más detalles sobre su pasado judío. Memòria del Carrer está formado por un grupo de personas que comparten interés en el estudio sobre los descendientes de judíos conversos y por extensión todo lo relacionado con la presencia de judíos en Mallorca. A través de un trabajo dedicado, está asociación realiza investigaciones que la han llevado a reconstruir un árbol genealógico con casi 9.000 descendientes de judíos conversos o chuecas, desde el año 1500 hasta hoy. El resultado es un árbol genealógico guardado en ordenador que, si se quisiera imprimir, mediría 30 metros de largo y 2 metros de alto. Todo empezó porque varias personas habían empezado a investigar su historia familiar y comentándolo vieron que sería de gran interés poder compartir sus hallazgos e investigar conjuntamente. A través de memoria oral, registros civiles y libros eclesiásticos Memòria del Carrer poco a poco ha ido reconstruyendo a las familias descendientes de judíos de Mallorca. Albert recibe llamadas de por todo el mundo ya que muchos judíos se marcharon de la isla. Memòria del Carrer pretende ante todo “trabajar por la recuperación y mantenimiento de fuentes documentales y orales” para un mejor conocimiento, y siempre intenta “garantizar la objetividad y la calidad” de la información. Poca gente sabe, por ejemplo, que los denominados chuetas, personas descendientes de judíos conversos y con uno de los famosos quince apellidos sólo son algunos de los descendientes de judíos que hay en Mallorca. Fue en 1987 cuando un grupo de cinco descendientes de judíos conversos fundaron el Instituto de Relaciones Culturales Baleares-Israel (IRCBI), creyendo necesario que tras el establecimiento de relaciones diplomáticas entre España e Israel, se difundiera la cultura judía para mayor comprensión y entendimiento entre ambos pueblos. En 2008 la IRCBI cumplió veinte años de trabajo. Su presidenta, Jacqueline Tobiass, de origen francés y judío, ha dedicado dos décadas de su vida al instituto. Junto con un panel de personas chuetas o gente con especial interés en el tema, ha podido organizar una gran variedad de proyectos, actividades y colaboraciones con la intención de promover la cultura judía, el intercambio de cultura y conocimientos entre Israel y las Islas. “THERE IS STILL A GREAT DEAL OF IGNORANCE ABOUT MALLORCA’S JEWISH HISTORY” In spite of coming from a ‘traditional’ Catholic family, Albert Bonnín Fiol is a descendent of converted Jews. In his capacity as President of Memoria del Carrer he has been able to help many people who were looking for information on their Jewish past. Memòria del Carrer is formed by a group of people who share an interest in the study of the descendents of converted Jews and by extension everything related to the presence of Jews on Mallorca. Through its dedicated work, this association has carried out research enabling it to reconstruct a genealogical chart of nearly 9 thousand descendents of converted Jews or ‘chuetas’ from the year 1500 to the present. The result is a genealogical tree stored on computer which, if printed, would measure 30 metres in length and 2 metres in height. It all started because several people had started investigating their family history and commenting on this, they realised that it would be extremely interesting to share their finds and carry out joint research. Little by little Memòria del Carrer has reconstructed the descendants of Jewish families of Mallorca by means of oral memory, civil registries and ecclesiastical books. “WE HAVE TO BRING IT OUT OF THE DARKNESS. WE STRIVE TO RETURN TO MALLORCANS THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND PRIDE CONCERNING WHAT IS AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT PART OF THEIR ROOTS – THE JEWISH PART”. It was in 1987 when a group of five descendents of converted Jews established the Instituto de Relaciones Culturales Baleares-Israel (IRCBI, Institute for BalearicIsraeli Cultural Relations). They felt that after diplomatic relations had been established between Spain and Israel, Jewish culture should be diffused in order to promote a greater understanding between the two peoples. In 2008 the IRCBI celebrated twenty years of work. Its president, Jacqueline Tobiass, is French and Jewish, and has devoted two decades of her life to the institute. Along with a panel of ‘chuetas’ or people with a particular interest in the subject, she has managed to organize a wide variety of projects, activities and collaborations with the aim of promoting Jewish culture, the exchange of culture and knowledge between Israel and the Balearic Islands and the Jewish legacy of Mallorca. The institute’s collaboration with the Universidad Española a Distancia (UNED – Spanish DistanceLearning University) is seen as particularly important, as conferences of great academic interest are imparted through it.
