Every year on June 16th, South Africa takes a moment to remember the bravery, selflessness, and tenacity of the young people who opposed injustice during the Soweto Uprising in 1976. For many of us, Youth Day is a deeply personal reminder of the ability of young people to influence a country's course, not just a day off or a history lesson.

Personally, Youth Day has always been a time for introspection. Growing up, I heard stories about students marching for the right to be taught in their native language, the right to dignity, and, ultimately, the right to a brighter future. It had a lasting impression on me. It reminded me that change frequently begins with young people who are brave enough to want something better, not only for themselves, but for future generations.

Today, we witness the same vitality and inventiveness in South Africa's youth, particularly in the real estate market. Young professionals are transforming the landscape with their innovative ideas, technological expertise, and entrepreneurial spirit. From using digital platforms to promote homes more efficiently to advocating for sustainable building methods, young people are more than simply players in the real estate industry; they are its future leaders. Their capacity to react to market trends and embrace prop-tech developments positions them as significant contributors to the industry's growth.

But, while we look ahead, Youth Day also reminds us of our past. We remember the 1976 Soweto Uprising because it was a significant point in our battle for independence. The harsh official response killed hundreds of people, including Hector Pieterson, whose image became a symbol of resistance. This day reminds us that the rights and opportunities we have today were hard-won through the bravery of those young people.

As we commemorate Youth Day this year, let us remember the past by investing in the present. Let us support, mentor, and uplift the youth, not only to honor those who came before them, but also to empower them to create the future we all deserve. Whether in real estate or any other sector, young people are not only tomorrow's leaders; they are already leading today.

Father Figures & Foundations

Father’s Day hits different when you realise it’s not just about ties, socks, and Sunday braais (although, yes, we’re firing one up). It’s about the men-biological, chosen, or spiritualwho shape, support, and show up. It’s a day to honour the guys who shape, support, and show up.

Whether it’s the dad teaching you how to change a plug, the uncle showing you how interest rates work, or the grandfather passing down the deed to the family home, fatherhood shows up in ways that build more than memories. It builds a legacy.

Let’s be honest, most of us have a dad moment burned into our brains. The time he insisted the leaking tap just needed “a washer and some patience.” The lectures are about budgeting for bond repayments. The pride on his face when the “For Sale” sign came down and the keys got handed over.

In many homes, dads are the unofficial building inspectors, financial advisers, and motivational speakers. They are the ones encouraging you to think long-term, invest smartly, and buy land because “They’re not making any more of it!”

And that wisdom

“Dads don’t just fix things. They frame the foundation for who we become.”

Here’s the thing, fatherhood and real estate go hand in hand more than people realise. We’re talking about:

• Creating intergenerational wealth through property.

• Providing stability and shelter, no matter the square meterage.

• Handing down knowledge about ownership, security, and responsibility.

And it’s not just about the dads doing the buying. It’s about the agents, developers, and property professionals who are dads themselves - grinding to provide, teach, and uplift their own families and communities.

Did You Know?

Property passed down through generations accounts for 35% of intergenerational wealth in South Africa.

It’s easy to confuse a “house” with a “home.” But real dads know the difference. A home is where the walls echo with laughter, where life lessons are passed down during DIY disasters, where dinner tables become lecture halls, and love doesn’t always need words - it’s in the effort, the presence, and the unshakeable belief that you can always do better.

So, what do you give the man who’s given his all?

• If you’re in the market: Name your first property after him, he’ll never stop telling people about it.

• Already an owner? Frame the title deed and gift it with a handwritten note: “Thanks for teaching me the value of roots.”

• Still renting? No stress. Tell him what your goals are. That’s enough to make any dad proud.

At the end of the day, fatherhood is about foundations - emotional, moral, and sometimes even literal ones with floorplans. This Father’s Day, we raise a glass (and a drill) to every man helping build a better future, one small act - and one big property dream, at a time.

HILLCREST: WHERE DURBAN COMES HOME

There’s something about Hillcrest. Maybe it’s the crisp morning air drifting down from the Valley of a Thousand Hills, or the way the roads curve gently past coffee spots, stables, and schools with laughter echoing from open fields. Maybe it’s the quiet confidence of a place that doesn’t need to shout. Whatever it is, Hillcrest isn’t just a suburb — it’s a feeling. And if you’re from Durban, you already know exactly what that means.

Hillcrest doesn’t try to be anything it’s not. It wears its charm with ease. It feels like Durban, but with a little more breathing room. The same warmth, the same energy — just slowed down to a pace that lets you actually enjoy it. That easy rhythm is what draws people in, and what keeps them here. You can still do the school run, grab your groceries, hit the gym, and make it back home before the afternoon clouds roll in.

And when they do, there’s usually a fire going and a neighbor waving across the fence.

For families, Hillcrest is the sweet spot, Big yards, Good schools. A real sense of safety. There’s space for kids to be kids — to ride bikes, climb trees, and come home when the streetlights flicker on. But it’s not just for families. Young professionals, retirees, creatives — Hillcrest is a mix, and it works because the community works. People look out for each other here. The WhatsApp groups are active, the farmer’s markets are full, and the cafés know your coffee order by week two.

There’s still that unmistakable Durban DNA — the coast is close enough, the braais still start on a Friday, and the lifestyle is outdoorsy at heart. But in Hillcrest, you trade the city hum for birdcalls in the morning and stars you can actually see at night. It’s not about escaping Durban; it’s about upgrading your version of it.

Whether you’re dreaming about a bigger garden, a safer street, or just a little more sky, Hillcrest makes it feel possible. Not flashy, not fussy — just solid, steady living with the space to exhale. And for many in Durban, that’s not just the dream. That’s the plan.

Young. Real, Ready.

Every June 16, South Africa stands still for a moment and then shouts forward. Youth Day is more than a public holiday; it's a powerful reminder of courage, change, and the electric force of young voices. It commemorates the 1976 Soweto Uprising, when thousands of schoolchildren stood against an oppressive education system. That bravery reshaped a nation.

Now, decades later, we ask: how do we honour that fire, not just in memory, but in action?

At Ingwe, we believe one way is by opening doors, literally. Real estate might not seem like the frontlines of youth empowerment, but it plays a far bigger role than it gets credit for.

Access to land and property is more than financial, it’s psychological. It’s about security. Dignity. A seat at the table. And when young people start to believe that property isn’t just for the “established” or the “older crowd,” we shift the narrative. We hand over the keys to the future, and not just metaphorically.

Think about it: many young South Africans still believe homeownership is a fantasy. But that’s old-school thinking. Today, with smarter savings tools, entry-level developments, and community-based property education (yes, we’re looking at ourselves here), the game is changing. Slowly, but surely.

Youth Day isn’t just about remembrance. It’s a call to design better environments. Safe housing. Green spaces. Recreational areas. Access to schools, Wi-Fi, and transport. These aren’t luxuriesthey’re foundations. And property developers, municipalities, and real estate agents have a major role in advocating for these.

Did You Know?

In 1976, over 20,000 students marched in Soweto. Today, more than 60% of South Africa's population is under the age of 35.

Real estate isn’t just bricks and deeds. It’s about designing lives. We’re proud to back youth-focused developments, partner with housing initiatives, and spread financial literacy because information, like property, should be accessible.

The modern-day young South African isn’t waiting around for a miracle. They’re flipping side hustles, checking property apps, and DM-ing their way into investment groups. They want to know what a bond is. They want to build a legacy, not just rent one.

That’s why we’re out here with facts, humour, and zero gatekeeping. Because of a smart first-time buyer today? That’s a property mogul in the making.

Youth Day is about power. Voice. Vision. Let’s honour it by doing more than just posting a quote - we’re here to pass the mic, share the knowledge, and make sure the next generation knows that home is where their legacy begins.

“When young people have the keys, they don’t just open doors—they break down barriers.”

First-Time Home Viewing

Your no-nonsense guide to walking into that first showing with eyes wide open.

Buying your first home? Big deal. Big move. And big questions. Before you even think about making an offer, you’ve got to master the first real step: the viewing. It’s where the dream gets real—or starts to unravel.

Here’s what to know before you step through the door of that “perfect” place.

1. Start With Your Non-Negotiables

Forget marble countertops and Instagrammable lighting for a sec. What do you actually need in a home? Think number of bedrooms, work-from-home space, pet-friendly

layout, proximity to work, schools, or transport. Get clear on the essentials, then keep them top of mind when you walk in. Charm can’t fix poor location or cramped space.

2. Get Real About Your Budget

Your pre-approval amount isn’t your shopping limit—it’s your ceiling. Costs like levies, rates, maintenance, and future upgrades eat into your freedom fast. Know your full financial picture before your heart says yes.

3. Don’t Be Distracted by Staging

Cushions, candles, and curated art are there to seduce you. Look past them. Focus on structure, flow, storage, and natural light. Open every cupboard. Check for water damage. Feel the temperature. Imagine it empty. Would it still work for your life?

4. Scope Out the Surroundings

Don’t just fall for the four walls. What’s the street like? How’s the noise level? Is parking a pain? Take a walk. Try visiting at different times of day. That peaceful suburb might turn into a nightclub on Fridays.

5. Ask the Awkward Questions

Why is the place really on the market? Any recent repairs or issues? What’s the fibre situation like? Be curious and unafraid. You’re not being rude—you’re being responsible.

At Ingwe, we believe well-being includes the roof over your head—and how solid it is. So go in smart, confident, and clued-up. No blinkers. No pressure. Just you, taking the lead.

Deep Blue Value

Every June 8, we turn our gaze to the horizon. World Oceans Day is a global moment to recognise the vast, blue heart of our planet—the oceans that regulate our climate, feed billions, and remind us that no matter where we live, we’re all coastal creatures at heart.

But beyond the beautiful beaches and Instagram sunsets, this day is also about sustainability, stewardship, and systems that work in harmony with nature. Sounds a lot like the way we should be thinking about real estate, right?

Let’s break it down. Oceans cover over 70% of the Earth. They absorb carbon, regulate the weather, support economies, and bring joy. Now think of your property: its location, its structure, its value. Every one of those factors is affected by

climate, environment, and the long-term health of the planet.

World Oceans Day isn’t just for surfers and scuba divers. It’s for developers, buyers, architects, and estate agents. Because guess what? Climate risk is a market risk. Flooding, erosion, rising sea levels; these aren’t sci-fi plots. They’re real issues that already impact home insurance, zoning laws, and long-term investment strategy.

At Ingwe, we believe futureproofing starts now. Whether it's choosing eco-conscious building materials, pushing for green certifications, or supporting developments that balance beauty and biodiversity, we’re in.

We’re also all for education and empowerment, so clients know the impact of where and how they buy. Smart homes? Great. Smart buyers? Even better.

Did You Know?

Over 40% of the world’s population lives within 100km of the coast, making ocean health a direct property issue.

“The ocean doesn’t need a deed to prove its value. But your property sure does.”

Sustainability used to be a “nice to have.” Now, it’s a need to have. Energy-efficient homes, water-wise gardens, solar integration, smart irrigation - these aren’t just trendy. They add value, reduce costs, and protect the environment, which ultimately protects us.

And don’t forget coastal properties. In South Africa, they’re more than investments, they’re part of the national identity. But they’re also at risk. We’ve got to keep these treasures from becoming tragedies.

SO, WHAT CAN WE DO?

• Support eco-friendly developments: Whether in Joburg, Durban, or Cape Town, look for developments that walk the talk.

• Ask better questions: When viewing property, ask about flood risk, environmental impact, and sustainability features.

• Use your voice: Push for policies that protect both land and sea. Sustainable real estate is a team sport.

It’d be unmatched. Prime coastal views, endless depth, waterfront access everywhere, and amenities like coral reefs, whales, and cruise ships. But even the best portfolio crumbles without management.

Let’s be the agents Earth needs: protecting her assets, investing in her future, and never underestimating the power of a blue-chip property and a blue ocean.

World Oceans Day is a reminder: we don’t live on the Earth; we live with it. And that includes the ocean. If we can learn from its rhythms, its resilience, and its balance, then maybe, just maybe, we’ll create real estate that isn’t just profitable.

It’ll be sustainable. And unforgettable.
