diop adisa hip-hop artist
Inspired by the intersectional artistic and community work of Nipsey Hussle, Diop traveled to Los Angeles to connect with other creatives in historically Black communities who are using their artistry in innovative, community-focused ways. There, he met with artist collectives to discuss ideas for building economic, cultural, and artistic infrastructure for Black creatives in Indianapolis. The reason I find this so renewing is because one of the main obstacles I've seen Black artists face is control of space and access to venues in their own communities. Connecting with people that are working to address this issue falls right in line with where I find my artistic journey as well. Diop has used this awareness to inform not only his creative content, but also where he performs, in an effort to challenge his and his creative circle’s thinking around the current social and economic structure for artists of color. I am much more conscious of the socioeconomic implications tied to performing or presenting my art in places that do not directly benefit the community that me or my art comes from.
