At an early age, Nicole, a realism painter, took an interest in the Old Masters. Over the past two years, she’s developed her skills in painting in a classical style, and she began her Creative Renewal experience by purchasing art supplies, art books, and magazines including "American Art Collector", and a membership to Newfields. A lot of my time was spent working with my mentor Mason Archie in his studio. We talked a lot about art and how that creativity happens. We painted together. Where I had difficulty, he was a guide and resource to help me get back on track.
Nicole had planned to travel to Queens, N.Y., to take an Alla Prima Still Life Painting course through Grand Central Atelier, and while she was disappointed that in-person classes were canceled due to COVID, she was grateful that the school offered the five-week course online. She connected with other students across the country. Alla prima refers to an approach where paint is applied wet on wet, without letting earlier layers dry. I had never painted in this style before. Doing alla prima requires more patience. I learned a lot about myself—and painted about six new paintings with different techniques. I was truly renewed by all the things I learned.
