Margaret’s original project involved traveling to Provincetown, Mass., to take a course at the Fine Arts Work Center, an international home for artists and writers. She wanted to reconnect with her childhood memories of summers in Cape Cod and do research for an autobiographical book. Because of the pandemic, Margaret’s travel plans were canceled and time to finish her book became scarce. With support from the fellowship, she was able to complete her book, "And Now I Spill the Family Secrets" (HarperOne, 2021). She then found surprising inspiration from a virtual writing workshop with graphic memoirists. The course ended up being more valuable to me, because it gave me the opportunity to develop a piece of illustrated writing, while also getting to know a small community of comic writers. My piece was published in The Believer, and I've stayed in touch with several of the writers from our class.

The magazine also invited Margaret to host an online workshop for over 300 attendees. She’s since spoken at the University of Indianapolis and Southport High School, and has begun working on a new book.
I was able take a deeply informative, inspiring course online and become involved in a community I wouldn't have otherwise met, all the while publishing my first graphic memoir.
