Air India crash: Both engines shut down after shift in fuel control switches; one pilot said he ‘didn’t do it’

Air India Boeing 787-8 aircraft’s engine fuel control switches transitioned from ‘RUN’ to ‘CUTOFF’ position within three seconds after lift-off, leading to the plane crashing in just 34 seconds after taking off from Ahmedabad on June 12, according to the initial probe report by the

Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) released early on Saturday.

Both fuel control switches supplying fuel to the engines of Air India flight 171 were turned off in quick succession, shutting

Ravindra Jadeja to seal a stunning 22-run win over India at the Lord’s and take a 2-1 lead in the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series at the Lord's here on Monday.

Resuming from 58/4, England’s fast bowlers were right on the money as India were eight down when lunch break came. But Jadeja refused to buckle in, hitting a gritty and magnificent 61 not out off 181 balls. Despite him and

the lower-order giving it their all, India were so close yet so far to registering a miraculous victory by being bowled out for 170 in 74.5 overs.

For England, skipper Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer took three wickets each off bowling 24 and 16 overs respectively, while Brydon Carse had two scalps. Chris Woakes and Shoaib Bashir, bowling with a left finger

EAM Jaishankar meets Chinese President Xi Jinping, discusses India-China ties

this morning in Beijing along with my fellow SCO Foreign Ministers. Conveyed the greetings of President Droupadi Murmu & Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Apprised President Xi of the recent development of our bilateral ties. Value the guidance of our leaders in that regard."

The EAM is in China, his first visit to the country since the violent confrontation in Galwan Valley in May 2020, to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers' Meeting (CFM) in Tianjin.

On Monday, the EAM held multiple high-level meetings to deepen dialogue and cooperation with Chinese officials.

He met Liu Jianchao, Minister of the International Department of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee (IDCPC), and discussed the need for a constructive India-China relationship.

He also held a bilateral meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a senior member of the CPC Political Bureau.

During the talks with Wang Yi,

Jaishankar emphasised a longterm approach to resolving bilateral issues.

"Incumbent on us to address aspects related to the border, normalising people-to-people exchanges and avoiding restrictive trade measures and roadblocks. Confident that on the foundation of mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity, ties can develop along a positive trajectory," he posted on X after the meeting on Monday.

The EAM also met Chinese Vice President Han Zheng and reiterated that further normalisation of India-China ties can yield mutually beneficial outcomes.

He stressed that open exchange of views and perspectives between the two neighbours and major economies is critical in the current complex global environment.

Highlighting the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and China, Jaishankar welcomed the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which had been suspended since 2020

due to the pandemic and border tensions.

The SCO Council of Foreign Ministers' Meeting, where Jaishankar is representing India, precedes the 25th Heads of State Council meeting of the SCO scheduled to be held later this year in Tianjin. India chaired the SCO in 2023, while Pakistan hosted the Leaders' Summit in 2024.

Founded as a regional security bloc, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation is a permanent intergovernmental organisation comprising India, China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Iran and Belarus. The SCO’s agenda spans counterterrorism, security, economic cooperation, and regional connectivity.

India's participation at various SCO meetings has intensified in recent months, including the visits of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to China in June for discussions on regional defence and security under the SCO framework.

3rd Test: England seal stunning 22-run win over India despite Jadeja’s admirable fightback

injury, had one wicket each, as England found a way via sheer relentlessness and absolute patience to win an incredible Test match on the day they won the ODI World Cup at the Lord’s exactly six years ago. Both teams were level at 387 after the first innings, while England were all out for 192 in their second innings.

Amidst tension amongst every human being in the stadium, the final session started with Jadeja and Siraj scampering for singles, amidst defending solidly to take India closer to victory.

But on the fifth ball of the 75th over, Bashir spun back one which hit Siraj's bat, and rolled back

onto the stumps to dislodge the leg-stump bail, sparking jubilant scenes for England and agony in the Indian camp.

Brief scores: England 387 and 192 beat India 387 and 170 all out in 74.5 overs (Ravindra Jadeja 61 not out, KL Rahul 39; Ben Stokes 3-48, Jofra Archer 3-55) by 22 runs

Air India crash: Both engines shut down after shift in fuel control switches; one pilot said he ‘didn’t do it’

down both the engines. According to the report findings, one of the pilots can be heard on the cockpit voice recorder, asking the other why he cut off the fuel, to which the other pilot responded by saying that “he did not”.

“Fuel switches for engines 1 and 2 were returned to ‘Run’ within seconds. EGTs for both engines rose, indicating relight efforts. Cockpit voice recording indicates confusion: One pilot asked, “Why did you cut off?”

The other responded, “I did not do so,” suggesting possible miscommunication,” the report said.

The pilot flying was co-pilot Clive Kundar, while pilot-in-command

Sumeet Sabharwal was pilot monitoring for this flight.

Sabharwal had nearly 8,600 hours on the Boeing 787, while Kundar had over 1,100 hours. The report said that both pilots had an adequate rest period before the flight.

According to the 15-page report, the flight lasted around 30 seconds between lift-off and crash. The report noted that at this stage, there are no recommended actions to operators of Boeing 787-8 aircraft and GE GEnx-1B engines.

The preliminary report mentioned that the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had in 2018 issued a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) regarding the “potential disengagement of the fuel control switch locking feature”. Air India, however, did not carry out the inspection as the SAIB was merely advisory and not mandatory.

Shukla, along with fellow astronauts Peggy Whitson (US), Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski (Poland), and Tibor Kapu (Hungary), boarded SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft "Grace" at 3:30 a.m. CT (2 PM IST) on Monday. Shukla flew to the ISS on June 26. He also became the second Indian astronaut to travel to space after Rakesh Sharma's 1984 odyssey.

The 18-minute-long de-orbit burn took place over the Pacific Ocean as the spacecraft reentered the Earth's atmosphere. The astronauts also had a blackout period, where the spacecraft lost communication signals for about seven minutes. Final preparations included detaching the capsule's trunk and orienting the heat shield ahead of atmospheric entry, which exposed the spacecraft to temperatures nearing 1,600 degrees Celsius.

Wimbledon: Sinner claims maiden Championship with dominating win over Alcaraz

Continued from Page 1

23-year-old World No. 1 flipped the narrative, ending Alcaraz’s perfect 5-0 record in major finals and halting a five-match losing streak against the Spaniard. Sinner’s victory came after three hours and four minutes of gripping tennis, where he imposed his aggressive baseline game and served with authority. After dropping the first set, the Italian broke Alcaraz early in each of the next three sets, tightening his grip as the match wore on. His relentless hitting, especially into Alcaraz’s forehand, paid dividends as the Spaniard’s level dipped as per ATP.

With the win, Sinner secures his fourth Grand Slam title, now only missing Roland Garros to complete the career Grand Slam. He also leaves London with a commanding 3,430-point lead in the PIF ATP Rankings.

The road to the final wasn’t without challenges. Sinner equalled the Open Era record for fewest games lost through three rounds, but needed an MRI after a fourth-round scare, when opponent Grigor Dimitrov retired with a pectoral injury while leading two sets to love. From there, Sinner stormed past Ben Shelton and Novak Djokovic to reach his fifth major final. In Sunday’s final moments, Sinner didn’t blink. He converted his first match point and raised his arms in triumph as Centre Court roared in approval. Alcaraz, who was aiming to become only the second man to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon in consecutive years, fell short despite entering with a 48-5 season record.

The rivalry between the two young phenoms is now tied with both men splitting the past seven majors

Directives and Alert Service Bulletins were complied on the aircraft as well as engines,” the report said. According to the report, there were no weatherrelated issues with the flight and the aircraft’s take-off weight was well within permissible limits for the given conditions.

“Investigation is continuing and the investigation team will review and examine additional evidence, records and information that is being sought from the stakeholders,” the preliminary report said.

In a statement on X after the report was made public, Air India said: “We continue to mourn the loss and are fully committed to providing support during this difficult time. Air India is working closely with stakeholders, including regulators”.

The air crash killed nearly 270 people — 241 of the 242 people on board and others on the ground.

the court.

Earlier, Radhika’s chats revealed that the player was unhappy about restrictions imposed by her family and wanted to go very far from her home.

Her chats revealed that she and her father had discussed financial matters with the former apparently not in favour of his daughter going abroad on a coaching assignment.

“My father has said no,” Radhika wrote in Hindi in one of the chats, adding that her father questioned the logic of working abroad if it resulted in insignificant savings.

In one chat, Radhika expressed her disinterest in taking up an assignment in China citing issues related to non-availability of Indian food.

On Thursday, Deepak Yadav pumped three bullets into his daughter at their home in Gurugram, following an

argument over her operating a sports academy. He was allegedly upset with his daughter’s tennis coaching assignment at an academy, the police said.

On Friday afternoon, the police produced Yadav in a Gurugram court and sought a two-day remand, but the Judge allowed his questioning for just one day.

A Gurugram Police spokesman had earlier said that Radhika was shot dead in her house in Sushant Lok Phase-2 of Gurugram's Sector-57 by her father using his licenced weapon around 10.30 A.M.

One of the bullets struck the tennis player in the neck while two hit her in the back while she was working in the kitchen of the first floor of the building, whose ground floor is occupied by Deepak Yadav's brother, Kuldeep. Meanwhile, police sources said Radhika's mother, Manju Yadav, has refused to give a statement on the incident.

Two more die, death toll in Telangana pharma unit blast rises to 42

Hyderabad, July 6 (IANS)

The death toll in the fire and explosion at Sigachi Industries Ltd’s manufacturing unit in Pashamylaram near Hyderabad rose to 42 on Sunday.

Two of the injured workers succumbed while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Patancheru on Sunday.

Sigachi Industries, in a statement on Sunday night, said that it is saddened to share the loss of two more team members since July 4, taking the death toll to 42.

Of the 33 injured team members, 14 have now recovered and been discharged from the hospital, while 18 continue to be under medical attention in various hospitals, it said.

Eight team members are still missing. Of the 143 members present on-site during the time of the accident, 61 are safe, the company statement added.

Setup in 1989, Sigachi Industries’ Pashamylaram plant has been incident-free for 36 years. It is an ISO 45001:2018 certified facility and follows stringent safety and compliance measures.

“Since the time of the accident, we have been coordinating the emergency response, family support, and extending cooperation with the investigation and compliance efforts,” the company said.

A major explosion occurred in the manufacturing plant of Sigachi Industries at Pashamylaram, Patancheru Mandal, Sangareddy district on June 30.

The plant manufactures Microcrystalline Cellulose powder, which is used in tablets and capsules as a binding agent.

Rescue teams found 30 pieces of human remains at the site, and they were sent to the Forensic

Science Laboratory (FSL), Hyderabad, for DNA analysis.

According to officials at Patancheru Government Hospital, of the 24 DNA samples collected so far, 22 bodies have been identified and handed over to their families.

The deceased hailed from Bihar, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. Authorities are sending the bodies in ambulances to their native places with police escort. Two police constables are accompanying each body.

Personnel from Fire Services, SDRF, HYDRAA and police continued combing through the debris for human remains. Officials said they will continue the operation till they find all remains.

Sigachi Industries has already announced Rs 1 crore compensation each to the families of the deceased. It also announced that it would bear all the expenditure towards the treatment of the injured and provide them all the support.

Andhra Pradesh set to launch AIdriven mosquito control programme

Amaravati, July 6 (IANS)

Andhra Pradesh's Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department is launching a focused "smart mosquito control" programme using deep technology to check vector-borne diseases.

The Artificial Intelligencepowered Smart Mosquito Surveillance System (SMoSS) will be launched on a pilot basis at 66 locations in six major municipal corporations in the state, the department announced on Sunday.

SMoSS will primarily safeguard

public health by curbing the dreaded mosquito menace, and it will also reduce operational burden on civic staff and cut costs of Urban Local Bodies, it said. The programme will be closely and effectively monitored with the help of Internet-of-Things like drones, sensors, heat maps and traps.

The pilot will soon be launched at 16 locations in the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, four in Kakinada, five in Rajamahendravaram, 28 in Vijayawada, seven in Nellore, and six in Kurnool.

MAUD's Principal Secretary, S. Suresh Kumar, and Director of Municipal Administration, P. Sampath Kumar, recently studied the AI-powered SMoSS, developed by a private agency, to assess its efficacy.

AI-powered smart mosquito

sensors will be installed in key mosquito-prone zones in the selected urban local bodies as part of the pilot project.

These smart sensors will detect the mosquito species, their gender, density, temperature and humidity. SMoSS will trigger automatic alerts when mosquito density crosses a threshold level in any particular area. Data thus generated will be continuously streamed to a central server and visualised on a real-time dashboard.

"This will enable close monitoring and ensure prompt fumigation in the affected areas in a data-driven approach for effective control of mosquitoes instead of the present ‘blind spraying’ process that has little impact. The IoT sensors will monitor mosquito density and guide the targeted activity," an official said.

Train rams into TN school van: Two students die, railway gatekeeper suspended

Chennai, July 8 (IANS) In the wake of a tragic accident involving a school van and a speeding train near Semmanguppam in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore district, railway authorities have suspended the gatekeeper for alleged negligence.

The officials said two girl students died in the accident.

Earlier reports said that three children died; however, the officials confirmed the death of two students.

The incident, which occurred at around 7.45 a.m., claimed the lives of two students and left several others seriously injured.

The accident took place at an unmanned level crossing near Semmanguppam, where a school van carrying children attempted to cross the tracks despite an approaching train.

Eyewitnesses said the van was hit by a passenger train bound for Chidambaram and was dragged

nearly 50 metres before coming to a halt. The impact left the van mangled and sparked panic among locals.

Tragically, two students died on the spot, while the injured, including the driver and several schoolchildren, were rushed to Cuddalore Government Hospital. Some are said to be in critical condition.

Following the incident, the Tiruchi Railway Division moved swiftly to take disciplinary action. Pankaj Sharma, the gatekeeper on duty at the time, was suspended pending an inquiry.

Railway sources said preliminary findings suggested the gate was left open or not properly secured when the van crossed the tracks. A high-level inquiry committee has been constituted to investigate the exact sequence of events that led to the collision. The committee will examine CCTV footage, eyewitness statements, and railway communication logs to establish accountability and suggest safety improvements.

Accused in Gopal Khemka murder case gunned down in encounter in Patna

Patna, July 8 (IANS) An accused linked to the murder of businessman Gopal Khemka was gunned down after an encounter in Bihar capital's Malsalami locality early Tuesday morning, officials said.

dropout from Krishna Nagar, Delhi, Lamba took to crime at a young age and was once listed as a Bad Character from PS Vikas Puri. By 1996, he had changed his identity and relocated to Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, where he formed a deadly alliance with associates Dhirendra and Dilip Negi. His modus operandi was chilling: the gang would hire taxi drivers, murder them, loot their vehicles, and dump the bodies in remote hilly terrains to avoid detection.

The accused, identified as Vikas Kumar alias Raja, allegedly accompanied the shooter, Umesh Yadav, who was directly involved in Khemka’s murder on Friday night.

Bihar’s Special Task Force (STF) and Malsalami police conducted the raid based on information extracted from Umesh during interrogation.

Earlier, police had arrested Umesh, identified as the main shooter in the case. Preliminary investigations have revealed that

Vikas was involved in illegal arms trading in the Malsalami area and had sold the weapon to Umesh that was used in the murder of Khemka.

According to an official, the police team reached Vikas’s house around 2.45 a.m. on Tuesday, where he opened fire on the joint team. The officials of Bihar STF and Malsalami police retaliated. After a brief gunfight, the accused was neutralised.

“So far, we have detained two individuals and arrested the main shooter in the Gopal Khemka case. Our investigation indicates that an individual had taken a contract of Rs 10 lakh to kill Khemka and subcontracted it to Umesh for Rs 1 lakh,” a senior police officer said, adding that further details will be shared as the investigation progresses.

Businessman Gopal Khemka was shot dead in Patna on Friday night, triggering shock and concern among the business community and raising questions about the law and order situation in the state capital.

The high-profile murder case put the Nitish Kumar government in a spot at a time when the ruling coalition of JD(U) and BJP is prepping for the Assembly polls.

The Opposition, the RJD and Congress targeted the state government over Bihar's law and order situation.

Inspired by PM Modi, UP restaurateur’s ‘Pradhanmantri Chaiwala’ grabs spotlight

New Delhi, July 6 (IANS) While several roadside eateries and dhabas along the Kanwar Yatra route are under the spotlight due to the ongoing controversy over shop nameplates, one unique establishment is standing out for all the right reasons: the "Pradhanmantri Chaiwala" restaurant, located on the DelhiDehradun National Highway 58 near Barhedi village.

Amid the state’s strict enforcement of nameplate regulations on Kanwar route

vendors, this highway-side tea and food joint has drawn attention not only for its unusual name but also for its wellmaintained infrastructure and strict adherence to hygiene standards.

Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the restaurant’s owner, Abhishek Panwar, named it 'Pradhanmantri Chaiwala', literally translating to “Prime Minister Tea Seller”, a nod to PM Modi’s own humble beginnings.

“Since childhood, I have been influenced by the ideology of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” said Panwar, originally from Jaipur, Rajasthan.

“One person is seen in the footage leaving the scene on a motorcycle. We are thoroughly scanning all CCTV cameras in the vicinity to trace the movement of the accused and gather more clues,” he said.

He further said, “The reasons behind this murder are being deeply investigated. The police are exploring every angle — whether there was any threat to Khemka or any prior dispute. No recent complaint or threat alert had been registered, which may be why he had no bodyguard at the time.”

The DGP noted that Khemka had voluntarily given up his security, last year.

“I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely “off the rails,” essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks. He even wants to start a Third Political Party, despite the fact that they have never succeeded in the United States - The System seems not designed for them. The one thing Third Parties are good for is the creation of Complete and Total DISRUPTION &

CHAOS, and we have enough of that with the Radical Left Democrats, who have lost their confidence and their minds! Republicans, on the other hand, are a smooth running “machine,” that just passed the biggest Bill of its kind in the History of our Country,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Lauding his "One Big Beautiful Bill" which he recently signed into law, the US leader said that it is a “Great Bill” but, “unfortunately” for Musk, it eliminated the “ridiculous Electric Vehicle (EV) Mandate”, which would have forced everyone to buy an electric car in a short period of time. Trump asserted that he has been strongly opposed to that from the very beginning, adding that people are now allowed to buy whatever they want – “Gasoline Powered, Hybrids (which are doing very well), or New Technologies as they come about - No more EV Mandate.”

“I have campaigned on this for two years and, quite honestly, when Elon gave me his total and unquestioned Endorsement, I asked him whether or not he knew that I was going to terminate the EV Mandate - It was in every speech I made, and in every conversation I had. He said he had no problems with that - I was very surprised!,” the US leader stated.

“Additionally, Elon asked that one of his close friends run NASA and, while I thought his friend was very good, I was surprised to learn that he was a blue blooded Democrat, who had never contributed to a Republican before. Elon probably was, also. I also thought it inappropriate that a very close friend of Elon, who was in the Space Business, run NASA, when NASA is such a big part of Elon’s corporate life. My Number One charge is to protect the American Public!,” Trump added.

South Korea: Record 1 million shop owners close businesses in 2024

Seoul, July 6 (IANS) The number of business owners that closed down their shops surpassed the 1 million mark for the first time in history last year, with the retail and eatery sectors accounting for nearly half, data showed on Sunday.

According to the data compiled by the National Tax Service, 1,008,282 individual and corporate businesses filed for closure in 2024, up 21,795 from the previous year.

It marks the first time business

closures have topped 1 million since record-keeping began in 1995, reports Yonhap news agency.

The tax agency said business closures have been on the rise since 2023, partly attributing the surge to what it called an "accumulated slump" during the COVID-19 pandemic and rising delinquency rates caused by high interest rates.

The business closure rate has also been on the rise since 2023, reaching 9.04 percent last year, slightly up from 9.02 percent the previous year, according to the agency.

The most cited reason for business shutdowns was slumping sales, which accounted for roughly half of the total.

Retail businesses have been

especially hard hit by the recent economic downturns, accounting for 29.7 percent of all business closures, followed by restaurant businesses at 15.2 percent, real estate at 11.1 percent, and wholesale companies and commodity brokerages at 7.1 percent.

The business closure rate for retail businesses stood at 16.78 percent, followed by restaurant businesses at 15.82 percent and personal services at 14.11 percent.

"Continued high interest rates and inflation have reduced real income, leading to declines in retail sales and spending in eateries," said Kim Kwang-seok, head of economic research at the Institute for Korean Economy and Industry.

PM Modi matches Congress PMs’ 70-year record with 17 foreign Parliament speeches

before him. This achievement was marked by his recent addresses in Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, and Namibia during a five-nation tour

in the first week of July 2025.

This level of global engagement highlights PM Modi’s position as one of the most active Indian leaders on the international stage.

For comparison, former Prime Ministers from the Congress party collectively reached the same number over several decades: Manmohan Singh with seven, Indira Gandhi with four, Jawaharlal Nehru with three, Rajiv Gandhi with two, and PV Narasimha Rao with one.

PM Modi has equalled that tally in just over a decade, signalling a shift in India's diplomatic approach. His recent

Death toll from Texas floods rises to 80

Houston, July 7 (IANS) Up to 80 people have died while more than 40 people remain missing, three days after hours of heavy rain led to major flash flooding in the south-central US state of Texas, authorities said.

US President Donald Trump said Sunday he is planning to visit Texas on Friday, hours after signing a major disaster declaration, unlocking key federal resources as search and rescue efforts continue, Xinhua news agency reported.

Kerr County, the hardest hit among 20 affected counties in the region, alone accounts for at least 68 of the fatalities, including 21 children, Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha said Sunday.

Four other counties have reported

a combined total of 12 deaths.

Leitha said 10 girls and one counselor from Camp Mystic were still unaccounted for as of Sunday afternoon, noting search and rescue efforts are still underway.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said at a press conference Sunday afternoon that at least 41 people were still unaccounted for across the state's flood-impacted area. He warned that additional heavy rainfall is expected in the coming days, keeping parts of the state at risk for further flooding.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has opened seven shelters, which are also providing food and water for central Texas communities, said a CNN report.

Also on Sunday, Trump pushed back on criticism that his administration's budget cuts to the nation's weather services had played a role in the deadly floods in Texas.

‘Trusted friends’ Pakistan and Turkey solidify defence partnership

tour underscores not only India's renewed connections with nations in Africa and the Caribbean but also the resonance of its voice among the Global South.

In Ghana, Modi was awarded the Order of the Star of Ghana, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in over 30 years.

In Trinidad & Tobago, he addressed Parliament during celebrations marking 180 years of Indian arrival, referencing India's enduring support for fellow developing nations.

Islamabad, July 10 (IANS) Turkey and Pakistan have further solidified their longstanding, military-to-military relationship - including training programmes, arms and weapons sales as well as joint projects - during the recent Islamabad visit of two top ministers from Ankara.

The presence of Hakan Fidan, Turkey's Foreign Minister and Yasar Guler, Turkey's Defence Minister in Islamabad on Wednesday, was a clear indication of robust ties between the two countries in the security and defence industry sector.

The two Turkish ministers met Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir.

Pakistan's Foreign Minister, Dar publicly admitted Turkey's assistance during the country's

recent standoff against India. The Turkish delegation also called on Pakistan's Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, underscoring the importance of disruptive technologies including UAVs, advanced avionics, pilot exchange programme, joint air exercises and more intensive cooperation. Both Turkish ministers then co-chaired the Joint Commission under the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC) framework.

In the first HLSCC meeting held in February, it was agreed to establish a joint commission to review the progress of 12 Joint Standing Committees (JSC) working under the HLSCC framework. In the coming weeks, a Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) meeting will be held to discuss further cooperation between the two countries.

Turkey and Pakistan also aim to enhance bilateral trade volume to USD $ 5 billion, especially in defence, trade, energy, and infrastructure sectors.

Pakistan looks at Turkey as a "trusted friend" and a "reliable brother", considering its support on the Kashmir issue.

Islamabad will help Turkey in establishing a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) dedicated to entrepreneurs in Karachi while Turkey's Maarif Foundation will also build and operate a school in Muzaffarabad in Pakistanoccupied Kashmir (PoK).

Netanyahu says Israel ready to discuss permanent Gaza ceasefire if Hamas disarms

Jerusalem, July 11 (IANS) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel is prepared to negotiate a permanent ceasefire in Gaza during a proposed 60-day truce, but only if the territory is fully demilitarised.

"At the beginning of the ceasefire, we will enter negotiations for a permanent end to the war, that is, a permanent ceasefire,"

Netanyahu said in a video message from Washington, where he is currently visiting.

"In order to achieve that, it must be done under the basic conditions we've set: Hamas must lay down its arms, Gaza must be demilitarized, and Hamas can no longer possess any governing or military capabilities," he said.

Israeli and Hamas delegations arrived in Doha, Qatar, on Sunday to negotiate a temporary truce, following a deadly Hamas-led attack in October 2023, Xinhua news agency reported.

Israel's subsequent military offensive has devastated the enclave, killing more than 57,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza

health officials.

Netanyahu also struck a defiant tone while acknowledging the costs of the war. “We have very great achievements in the fight against terror,” he said, referring to operations in Gaza and the West Bank, “but there are also painful prices.”

According to Netanyahu, a deal proposal presented by US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff includes a 60-day ceasefire that would also secure the release of 10 living hostages as well as several deceased.

About 50 hostages are still held in Gaza, with around 20 of them believed by Israel to be alive.

Pakistan: Ex-wife Jemima expresses concerns over threats to Imran Khan’s sons

Islamabad, July 10 (IANS)

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)

leader Imran Khan's former wife Jemima Goldsmith on Thursday slammed the Pakistani government over threats to arrest their children, if they attempt to visit their father in prison. "My children are not allowed to speak on the phone to their father Imran Khan. He has been in solitary confinement in prison for nearly two years. Pakistan's government has now said if they go there to try to see him, they too will be arrested and put behind bars. This doesn't happen in a democracy or a functioning state. This isn't politics. It's a personal

vendetta," Jemima said in a post on X.

The remarks came after Rana Sanaullah, the Pakistan Prime Minister's Advisor on Political Affairs, threatened to arrest Imran Khan's sons.

"If Imran Khan's sons come to Pakistan and join the movement, they will be arrested," Sanaullah said during an interview with a private TV channel.

Recently, while speaking outside the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, Imran Khan's sister Aleema revealed that Khan's sons, Kasim and Suleiman, who are based in the United Kingdom, have plans to visit the US to raise awareness before heading to Pakistan to participate in the PTI's upcoming political movement.

Addressing the media outside the Islamabad High Court (IHC), PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja said, "It is the right of the sons of the PTI founder to be a

part of the movement".

In a post on social media, the former Pakistani cricketerturned-politician's son Kasim Khan raised concerns over the treatment meted out to his father in prison.

"My father, former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has now spent over 700 days in prison - held in solitary confinement. He is denied access to his lawyers, not allowed visits from his family, fully cut off from us (his children), and even his personal doctor is refused entry. This is not justice. It is a deliberate attempt to isolate and break a man who stood for rule of law, democracy, and Pakistan," Kasim posted on X.

Imran Khan has been lodged in a jail since August 2023 and faces a series of charges, including corruption and terrorism, following his removal from power through a no-trust motion by the opposition in April 2022.

MoS Margherita in Cambodia visits Angkor Wat, highlights India’s restoration initiatives

Phnom Penh, July 9 (IANS) Union Minister of State (MoS) Pabitra Margherita on Wednesday visited Angkor Wat, the world's largest religious structure, situated in Cambodia and described it as a testament to shared civilisation ties between India and the Southeast Asian nation.

The MoS arrived in Cambodia on Sunday, aiming to enhance cooperation between India and the Southeast Asian nation across key sectors through productive engagements.

On the last day of his visit, while visiting Angkor Wat, he expressed pride in India becoming the first country to extend support for the restoration work of the ancient temple.

The MoS also visited Ta Prohm Temple and appreciated the remarkable efforts of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in its restoration and conservation work of the temple.

"Delighted to visit Angkor Wat, the world's largest ancient temple complex in Cambodia -- a magnificent symbol of IndiaCambodia shared civilisational heritage. Proud to note India was the first country to offer support for restoration. Also visited the Ta Prohm Temple, where the Archaeological Survey of India is doing commendable work of restoration and conservation," Margherita posted on X.

Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol re-arrested

Seoul, July 10 (IANS) Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been re-arrested over last year's failed martial law bid that plunged the country into a political turmoil. Yoon was first arrested in January this year following a lengthy stand-off, with investigators scaling barricades and cutting through barbed wire to take him into custody from his residence here.

Yoon was released two months later after a court overturned his arrest on technical grounds, but still faces trial.

Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached in April over the order, which saw military rule introduced for six-hours in December. A senior

judge at Seoul's Central District Court issued an arrest warrant for Yoon on Wednesday, citing fears he could destroy evidence, the BBC reported.

Yoon, who was the first sitting South Korean president to be arrested, faces trial on charges of leading an insurrection over his attempt to impose martial law.

During Wednesday's seven-hour hearing, a special counsel team argued for the arrest warrant on five key charges, the BBC reported citing South Korean news agency Yonhap.

The charges include Yoon's alleged violation of the rights of cabinet members by not inviting some of them to a meeting before he declared martial law.

Yoon initially attended the hearing alongside his lawyers to deny the charges, before being taken to Seoul Detention Center to await a decision on an arrest warrant.

Latin America no longer ‘very distant’ as PM Modi builds deeper engagement with region

Rio de Janeiro, July 7 (IANS)

India has long been associated with the temple restoration work in Cambodia.

The first restoration work was carried out by the ASI in Cambodia at Angkor Wat temple from 1986 to 1993, which is a world heritage site of UNESCO and an important tourist destination in Cambodia visited by millions of tourists every year.

India was the first country to offer such assistance on an appeal by the Cambodian Government in 1980, and is still appreciated by the Cambodian leadership and public alike.

Additionally, on Cambodia's request, India also agreed to restore the Ta Prohm temple in Angkor Archaeological Park in Siem Reap. ASI has been working on this project since 2003.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's State Visit to Brazil, starting with his arrival in Brasilia early Tuesday morning, India time, will not only be a significant milestone in the India-Brazil strategic partnership but is also expected to add renewed momentum to India's growing engagement with the region over the last 11 years.

PM Modi has earlier visited Brazil on three occasions, the first in July 2014, followed by another visit in 2019 to attend the BRICS summit, and in November last year to attend the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Modi will be arriving in Brasilia after attending the two-day 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro where he also held a number of bilateral meetings with leaders of Latin America countries as India continues to reach out to the world.

Before leaving for the ongoing five-nation visit, PM Modi had expressed confidence

that his visits to the countries will reinforce India's bonds of friendship across the Global South, strengthen partnerships on both sides of the Atlantic, and deepen engagements in the multilateral platforms such as BRICS, the African Union, ECOWAS and the CARICOM.

In Trinidad and Tobago, a country with which India shares a deeprooted historical, cultural and people-to-people connect, Prime Minister Modi had reiterated New Delhi's continued support for CARICOM to enhance the Global South partnership.

Interestingly, this was the second visit of Prime Minister Modi to the Caribbean region in a span of eight months - he had previously visited Guyana in November 2024 - and shows the immense importance that India accords to the Caribbean countries and reflects India's growing partnership with CARICOM.

After Port of Spain, PM had travelled to Buenos Aires - the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Argentina in 57 years - to hold discussions with Argentina's President Javier Milei and sign several mutuallybeneficial agreements between the two countries in various sectors.

Even during the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, PM Modi continued to strengthen India's bond with the Latin American nations by holding key meetings with the Presidents of Uruguay, Bolivia and Cubaholding discussions on issues of concern to the global South, including in the areas of health, pandemics and climate change.

Largest-ever military exercise, consisting of 19 countries and 35,000 troops, kicks off in Australia

Canberra, July 14 (IANS) Talisman Sabre 2025, the largest-ever military exercise, kicked off in Sydney on Monday, bringing together over 35,000 troops from Australia, the US and other partnering nations, according to the Australian Ministry of Defence.

First began in 2005, Talisman Sabre started as a bilateral military exercise between Australia and the US.

This year, over 35,000 troops from across 19 countries came together in Australia's Sydney to participate in the exercise following an opening ceremony on board HMAS Adelaide (an Australian naval ship) at Garden Island.

According to the US Embassy in Australia, over the next three weeks, more than 35,000 military personnel from Australia and partnering nations will deploy across Queensland, Northern Territory, Western Australia, New South Wales and Christmas Island.

"For the first time, activities will also be conducted outside of Australia in Papua New Guinea. Malaysia and Vietnam will also attend as observers," said the US Embassy in Australia

It added that along with the US and Australia, forces from Canada, Fiji, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Tonga, and the United Kingdom will join the military exercise as partners.

The Australian Ministry of Defence said that Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025 (TS25) will be the 11th and largest iteration of the exercise, which will consist of a live fire exercise and field training exercises incorporating force preparation activities, amphibious landings, ground force manoeuvres, and air combat and maritime operations.

According to Australian Chief of Joint Operations, Vice Admiral Justin Jones, Talisman Sabre provides an "unrivalled opportunity to train together" across the sea, land, air, space and cyber domains.

"It remains a powerful demonstration of Australia's enduring commitment to strengthening relationships between trusted allies and partners, in support of a peaceful, stable and sovereign IndoPacific," he said.

Australia: Over five million customers impacted by Qantas cyber attack

Sydney, July 9 (IANS) Australian airline Qantas has confirmed that over five million customers were impacted by a cyberattack in late June.

The Australian airline said in a statement on Wednesday that a forensic analysis found that customer records of 5.7 million people were exposed in the June 30 attack on a third-party system used by an offshore call center.

Of those 5.7 million customers' records, it said that 2.8 million contained names, email addresses

and Qantas frequent flyer numbers and an additional 1.2 million contained only names and email addresses.

The remaining 1.7 million had more data in the compromised system, including addresses, birthdates, phone numbers and meal preferences.

Qantas Group chief executive Vanessa Hudson said that the airline on Wednesday began reaching out to customers to notify them of the specific personal data fields that were held in the compromised system, reported Xinhua news agency.

"Since the incident, we have put in place a number of additional cybersecurity measures to further protect our customers' data, and are continuing to review what happened," said Vanessa Hudson.

The Qantas airline disclosed the attack on July 2 and on Monday said it had been contacted by a hacker claiming responsibility.

Hudson said on Wednesday that Qantas is in constant contact with the National Cyber Security Coordinator, Australian Cyber Security Center and the Australian Federal Police in relation to the incident.

Customers have been advised to remain alert, particularly with emails, phone calls and messages where the sender or caller claims to be from Qantas.

Qantas said that none of the personal data stolen in the attack has been released and that it is continuing to actively monitor with the support of specialist cybersecurity experts.

Global tariff disruption is opportunity to lower trade barriers: Australian economist

Jakarta, July 8 (IANS) The global trade disruption driven by US tariffs is an opportunity for Australia to lower trade barriers, according to a leading economist.

Warwick McKibbin, director of the Center for Applied Macroeconomic Analysis at the Australian National University, said on Monday that Australia is in "probably the best position" of any country to handle the economic fallout of President Donald Trump's widespread tariffs.

He told the Australian Conference of Economists that Australia should be looking at Trump's plan to introduce further tariffs from August 1 as an opportunity to expand trade with other nations, reports Xinhua news agency.

"We should be doing trade negotiations. We should be lowering barriers which make trade harder," McKibbin said.

Following the announcement of Trump's first tariffs in April, Australia's federal government reopened negotiations with the European Union (EU) on a free trade agreement.

Talks previously broke down in 2023 when the two sides could not reach an agreement over access to Australian agricultural

Australian central bank proposes banning card payment surcharges

Sydney, July 15 (IANS) Australia's central bank has proposed banning surcharges on card payments in a move it says will save consumers over a billion Australian dollars every year.

In a consultation paper released on Tuesday, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) said that a review of merchant card payment costs and surcharges found it would be in the public interest to remove surcharging on payments made using eftpos (the domestic debit card network), Mastercard and Visa cards.

It said that Australians currently pay 1.2 billion Australian dollars (768 million US dollars) in card payment surcharges every year and that surcharging is no longer achieving its "intended purpose" of steering customers towards more efficient payment choices as cash usage has declined.

"We think the time has come to address some of these high costs and inefficiencies in the system,"

RBA Governor Michele Bullock said at a press conference.

Under current rules, businesses are prohibited from imposing a surcharge greater than what it costs to accept a specific payment type. According to the RBA, eftpos and debit cards are typically less expensive for merchants to accept than credit cards, reported Xinhua news agency.

However, its review found that businesses are increasingly charging the same surcharge rate across all cards.

"Removing surcharging would make card payments simpler, more transparent and help to increase competition in the card payments system," it said.

Australia's Treasurer Jim Chalmers announced last October that the federal government would ban surcharges for debit card payments. The RBA review concluded it would be simpler to remove surcharges on debit and credit cards to avoid confusion and implementation issues. The central bank also proposed lowering the cap on interchange fees paid by businesses, which it said would benefit 90 per cent of businesses and save another 1.2 billion Australian dollars a year.

Australian scientists trial volcanic rock for sustainable farming

Caberra, July 14 (IANS) Australian researchers are trialling a new approach to farming that could help tackle agriculture costs and cut climate emissions.

products in the EU market.

Australia's Minister for Trade and Tourism, Don Farrell, said in June that he is hopeful that countries that believe in free and fair trade can reach deals to extend free trade agreements to ensure a greater diversity of trading partners, irrespective of what the US "might choose to do."

An annual review of trade published on Tuesday by the Productivity Commission, the federal government's principal economic advisory body, found that removing Australia's remaining trade barriers could save businesses 4 billion Australian dollars (2.5 billion US dollars) in compliance costs every year.

Crushed basalt, an abundant and low-cost volcanic rock byproduct from mining and construction, could save Australian farmers a large sum every year and help fight climate change, researchers from the University of South Australia (UniSA) said on Monday.

A national trial is testing crushed basalt, costing as little as 30 Australian dollars (19.69 US dollars) per ton, as a lowcost way to reduce soil acidity, boost crop yields, and capture carbon, all using standard farm equipment and minimal extra expense, said Binoy Sarkar, senior research fellow at UniSA's Future Industries Institute, who led the trial.

"Australian farmers spend nearly 1.2 billion Australian dollars (787 million US dollars) a year to tackle soil acidification, using expensive liming materials

that in themselves contribute to greenhouse gas emissions," Sarkar said.

Basalt not only reduces soil acidity but also supplies key nutrients such as phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, and silicon, cutting reliance on chemical fertilisers and boosting farm profits, he said.

Australia's farms produce nearly 18 per cent of the nation's greenhouse gases, reports Xinhua news agency.

Replacing lime with basalt could cut these emissions and help achieve net-zero by 2050, according to the collaborative team involving Australia's UniSA, James Cook University, the Tropical North Queensland Drought Hub, and industry partners on two federally and privately funded projects.

The initiative also benefits mining, giving waste basalt new value as a soil amendment, researchers said.

If successful, the technology could drive large-scale adoption, allowing farmers and quarry owners to earn carbon credits and promote sustainable practices, Sarkar said, adding ongoing trials aim to build trust and accelerate uptake nationwide.

Digging deeper

Why India’s mineral talks with Australia signal strategic maturity

India’s growing engagement with Australia to secure a stable supply of rare earth minerals and copper is more than a trade initiative—it’s a clear demonstration of strategic maturity. In a world increasingly shaped by resource competition, climate transition, and technological rivalry, India is finally aligning its economic goals with its geopolitical needs. And it’s doing so not in reaction to crisis, but with proactive foresight.

For too long, India’s mineral strategy has leaned heavily on a single source: China. That dependency, especially in critical minerals like neodymium, dysprosium, and other rare earths, has been a quiet but persistent vulnerability. These minerals are essential to everything from electric vehicles and renewable energy technologies to defense systems and electronics. Yet, while the world has known this for decades, few countries have taken real steps to shift away from their reliance on Beijing. India now seems determined to break that pattern.

Australia is a logical partner in this effort. It’s politically stable, resource-rich, and aligned with India both economically and strategically. What’s refreshing is the way this partnership is unfolding—not as a panicked scramble for alternatives but as a serious conversation about investment, exploration, and long-term supply. India is not just looking to import minerals; it’s looking to co-develop projects, fund early-stage exploration, and embed itself in the Australian mining landscape. That’s the kind of bold, forwardlooking thinking that has often been missing in India's past resource planning.

This also reflects a shift in how India views its place in the global economy. Securing inputs like copper and rare earths is not just about keeping the lights on—it’s about powering the next stage of industrial development. If India wants to lead in clean energy, electric mobility, and advanced manufacturing, it must own a larger share of the supply chain. That starts with raw materials. With China curbing exports and the West scrambling to build its own reserves, there is no time to waste.

Australia, for its part, should recognize this moment as an opportunity—not just to sell minerals, but to build a deeper,

Tariff turmoil, trade triumph Australia must seize the moment

mutually beneficial alliance with a rising power. India isn’t just another buyer—it’s a partner with the capacity to co-invest, co-develop, and commit for the long haul. For both countries, this mineral collaboration could become a blueprint for how democracies can work together to secure essential resources without being held hostage by authoritarian supply chains. What also makes this development important is its subtlety. Unlike headlinegrabbing summits or defence pacts, this is quiet diplomacy rooted in economic logic. There are no dramatic announcements—just a steady movement toward reducing risk and building resilience. That’s exactly what the moment demands. The global economy is entering a phase of intense competition for clean technologies, and those who don’t control their input pipelines will fall behind. However, the real test for India will come after the agreements are signed. It’s one thing to negotiate access; it’s another to make full use of it. The domestic mining and processing sectors need urgent reforms—faster clearances, modern technology, and public-private partnerships that go beyond token collaboration. If India can link external access with internal capability-building, this mineral strategy could become a game-changer.

The environmental angle cannot be ignored either. As India and Australia move forward with mineral partnerships, both must commit to sustainable mining practices and indigenous rights protections. This isn't just about economic growth—it’s about doing it the right way, with respect for people and the planet. The world doesn’t need more resource exploitation. It needs smart, clean, ethical extraction—and India can help lead the way.

Critics may point to the early stage of these talks and argue that results are a long way off. That’s true. But progress begins with intent. And what we’re seeing now is India signaling that it is no longer content to be a passive player in the global mineral race. It wants a seat at the table—not just as a consumer but as a contributor, investor, and partner.

As protectionism rises across major economies, Australia finds itself at a crossroads—and with a rare chance to lead. The latest wave of U.S.-led tariffs has stirred unease in global markets, threatening the foundations of free trade. But where others see a crisis, Australia can find opportunity.

Economist Warwick McKibbin recently noted that Australia is perhaps in the best position of any country to turn the global tariff disruption to its advantage. And he’s right. Australia is not only geographically removed from the epicenter of tariff conflicts, but economically wellpositioned, politically stable, and diplomatically credible. This is a moment that demands bold trade policy—not caution.

The case for acting decisively is strong. According to the Productivity Commission, eliminating Australia’s remaining trade barriers could save businesses nearly AUD 4 billion annually in compliance and regulatory costs. That’s money that could be redirected into growing small and medium enterprises, boosting exports, and making Australian goods and services more globally competitive. In an era of rising living costs and inflation anxiety, anything that helps reduce costs and widen access is worth serious attention.

But the issue here is not just about savings. It’s about strategy. As traditional trade alliances become unpredictable—thanks to the inward turn of giants like the U.S. and China—Australia must step into the vacuum. The world needs reliable partners, and Australia’s open economy, transparent legal system, and world-class products make it a natural fit.

Trade negotiations with the European Union are already being revived after previously stalling in 2023. This is a smart move. If successful, a free trade agreement with the EU would not only open new markets for Australian wine, meat, and services—it would also affirm Australia’s role as a proactive, rules-based trading nation in a time of volatility. The opportunity is not just to export goods, but to export trust.

However, Europe should not be the only focus. Diversifying Australia’s trade relationships beyond its traditional partners is crucial. Southeast Asia, India, Latin America, and Africa offer growing consumer markets and untapped potential for cooperation. These regions are eager to work with dependable partners—and Australia must step forward.

Australia has more than exports to offer. Clean energy expertise, high-quality education, agritech, digital services, and advanced manufacturing—all of these are assets that partner countries are actively seeking. Trade agreements must not only reduce tariffs but also facilitate knowledge-sharing, technology partnerships, and co-investment in sustainable industries.

Meanwhile, at home, it’s time to clean up what remains of the country’s own trade barriers. Though tariff levels are low, even modest obstacles—like outdated red tape or duplicative regulations—hurt Australia’s competitiveness and slow innovation. Removing these barriers sends a clear message: Australia is not just calling for global openness—it is willing to walk the talk.

But this won’t be easy. Protectionist sentiments still exist domestically, and some industries will fear that increased openness means exposure to cheaper imports or more competition. The government must address these concerns not with retreat, but with robust transition plans. Industryspecific support, innovation grants, workforce upskilling, and regional development funds can help struggling sectors adapt and thrive in a liberalised trade environment.

This moment is not just about economics. Trade policy today intersects with foreign policy, climate strategy, and national security. When Australia signs a trade agreement, it strengthens not just its GDP but also its global influence. Trade becomes a diplomatic tool—linking countries through mutual interests and reducing the likelihood of conflict.

For instance, the Indo-Pacific

region is emerging as the focal point of global economic activity. By strengthening trade ties with countries like India, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, Australia can help shape a peaceful, prosperous regional order. Australia’s participation in the Quad and ASEAN dialogues already gives it a platform—now it must follow through with practical trade initiatives that reflect shared values and vision. There is also a cultural dividend. Trade brings people together— not only business leaders and politicians but students, tourists, workers, and creatives. Strong trade ties foster curiosity, mutual respect, and real relationships. Australia’s multiculturalism, including a large and dynamic diaspora population, becomes a strength here. It allows the country to build bridges where others are building barriers. Furthermore, Australia’s leadership in green technologies and sustainable practices could become a major export in itself. As the world confronts climate change, countries are seeking eco-friendly solutions. Australia can and should position itself as a provider of green infrastructure, energy solutions, and sustainable agriculture. A trade policy that prioritises green exports is not just economically sound—it’s morally right.

Of course, none of this is guaranteed. The global economy remains fragile, and populist pressures can derail even the best of intentions. But waiting for perfect conditions is not leadership—it’s passivity. Australia must shape the trade landscape proactively, not just react to the moves of bigger powers.

If Australia hesitates, others will fill the gap. If it lowers its ambition, it will lose not just trade opportunities but credibility. The world is watching closely to see who will lead the next wave of global cooperation. If Australia takes bold steps now—cutting its own barriers, pushing forward with EU and Asian trade deals, and deepening ties with emerging economies—it can not only secure economic benefits, but shape the future of global trade itself.

In this moment of tariff turmoil, Australia has a chance to show what real leadership looks like: clear-eyed, confident, cooperative. This is not just about profit margins and commodity exports—it’s about setting a course for national prosperity, regional stability, and global engagement in an uncertain age. The window is open, but it won’t stay open forever. The world needs countries willing to stand for openness, fairness, and longterm thinking. Australia is ready. Now it must act.

India’s strategy in current geopolitics

New Delhi, July 13 (IANS) The international scene in India’s view today is marked by a tentativeness injected by US President Donald Trump in the United State's approach to India and Pakistan, increased influence of China on India’s neighbours, need for India to continue with Russian supplies in the spheres of defence and energy, challenge for India to keep up its active profile in both BRICS and QUAD, revelation of Chinese military support to Pakistan in the military confrontation between India and Pakistan that followed the Pak -directed terrorist attack at Pahalgam, the ongoing crisis in the Middle East and the prospect of India rising to become one of the top economies of the world. The current geopolitics is barely keeping the world from getting pushed towards a new Cold Warthis is primarily because a certain bonhomie still existed between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. International developments are keeping the world scene somewhat in a flux and India’s national strategy has to have the necessary flexibility to cope up with the same.

The strategic paradigms for India are not difficult to define. Adjusting with President Trump’s

New Delhi, July 13 (IANS) Former Foreign Secretary and India’s Ambassador to the US, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, who has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha, spoke to IANS in an exclusive interview on Sunday. He reflected on his transition from diplomacy to politics, expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the nomination. Shringla shared his views on India’s evolving global stature under the Modi government.

IANS: You’ve been nominated to the Rajya Sabha. What would you like to say about Prime Minister Modi?

somewhat erratic style of governance through Executive Directives, in pursuance of his maxim of ‘Make America Great Again’ (MAGA) and the call of ‘America First’ practised in domestic, foreign policy and trade& tariff spheres, has become important. Prime Minister Modi on his visit to the White House in February this year made it clear that India had an approach of understanding towards MAGA or America First and added that India would also like to call for ‘Make India Great Again’.

India did not react to a group of illegal immigrants of India being sent back to this country in handcuffs in a military plane, in the follow-up on ‘Immigration Emergency’ declared by Trump and took the sensible line that India would cooperate with US in dismantling ‘the ecosystem that had been created to encourage illegal migration to that country’. On balance of trade and tariffs India rightly favoured negotiations -befitting the status of a country that had offered its huge market to the world.

Hints of India resisting any stark arbitrariness of the US in matters of trade, however, need to be clearly sent out.

Another point of strategic challenge for India is the SinoPak alliance basically operative against India whose military dimension became evident when India retaliated against Pahalgam terror attack by taking out nine terrorist bases in POK and Pakistan.

This precipitated a full -fledged military confrontation between India and Pakistan in which Pakistan used military hardware and ‘live inputs’ supplied by China besides the drones that were received from Türkiye.

Harsh Vardhan Shringla: I express my heartfelt gratitude to him for entrusting me with such a huge responsibility. I have had a 40-year-long career in diplomacy, and now I look forward to serving the people of this country through Parliament. I am deeply thankful to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this honour.

IANS: How did you come to know about your nomination?

Harsh Vardhan Shringla: The official gazette notification had come out. But before that, Prime Minister Modi personally called me. He didn’t mention what exactly it would be—just that something significant was going to happen and that I would get an opportunity to serve the nation. I never imagined that he would call me himself. During my time as Foreign Secretary and Ambassador to the US, I had the opportunity to work closely under his leadership. But it felt special

This went on till a ceasefire plea from Pak DGMO was accepted by India. The Dy Chief of Indian army recently confirmed that India was having to combat ‘three enemies’ and wanted India to draw lessons from this. It may be mentioned here that the growing proximity of Bangladesh to China and Pakistan also has strategic implications for India.

A related matter is the threat of Islamic terrorism emanating from the Pak-Afghan belt where Pakistan enjoyed a certain ‘strategic depth’ against India. It is significant that Pakistan arranged a ‘give & take’ adjustment between the Taliban Emirate of Kabul and China by which the latter would extend its Belt&Road Initiative(BRI) to Afghanistan- this was like an economic investment- and Taliban on its part, would not rake up the issue of treatment of Muslim minorities in China, particularly in Uzbekistan next door.

India needed to educate US on how Pakistan continued to foster Islamic terrorists on its soil while trying to gain American sympathy on the issue of attacks by the radicals of Tehrik-eTaliban Pakistan (TTP). TTP had its own reasons for targeting Pak army establishments besides the Shiites.

Radical Islamic forces are antiUS as they carried the historical memory of the anti-West Wahhabi revolt of the 19th century and are hostile to the Pak army for the friendship its Generals enjoyed with Pentagon. Shiites are of course the traditional ‘enemies’ of Sunni extremists. TTP has become more active after Pakistan was found to have ‘tamed’ the Kabul Emirate.

In regard to the tension between

and humbling that he took the time to make that personal call.

IANS: What’s your view on India’s foreign policy under Prime Minister Modi?

Harsh Vardhan Shringla: If you look at how the world perceives India today compared to 10 years ago, the difference is massive. Today, India is seen with great respect. People around the globe recognise India's leadership in technology, innovation, and digital public infrastructure. Our contributions at the global level are now widely acknowledged. During the COVID-19 crisis, Prime Minister Modi initiated Vaccine Maitri, through which India supplied vaccines to many developing nations. There were countries that had their own vaccines but didn’t share them due to domestic needs or financial concerns. India, on the other hand, rose above that and helped when the world needed it the most. Everywhere

US and China, there was no doubt that China was striving to become the second superpower by building not only its military and technological power but also its economic strength which it was consolidating at a fast pace. China-Russia axis remains inviolable and it is China that leads the combine against the US. India’s strategy should be to maintain friendship with Russia without prejudice to its relationship with US and not let any American reservations against import of oil and military equipment from Russia, come in the way of its traditional bonds with the latter. India is a major world power having a say on the global issues of ‘war’ and peace and it has the capacity to handle international developments keeping its national interests on top.

Finally, of all the regions of the world where India had strategic stakes, Middle East is perhaps the most important. India has maintained friendship with all the major players of the regionIsrael, Iran and Saudi Arabiawith their different international alignments but the military confrontation between Iran and Israel has threatened to create a global conflict after US in support of Israel, attacked the nuclear sites of Iran with bunker-buster bombs and China and Russia rallied behind Iran.

A tenuous ceasefire holds at present as the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) backed Iran’s case and called upon the UN Security Council to intervene immediately to negotiate for peace. Iran-Israel military conflict has assumed the form of a ‘civilisational clash’ between Islam and Zionism which can turn into a war of attrition creating

PM Modi goes, he is conferred with international honours. That in itself reflects India’s growing stature. I recently visited countries like Kuwait, Algeria, and Bahrain as part of an allparty delegation after Operation Sindoor, and leaders in all these countries praised Prime Minister Modi and appreciated how strong our relationships with Gulf nations have become under his leadership.

IANS: Rahul Gandhi is the Leader of Opposition, but he frequently travels abroad. He is abroad even now. Your comments?

Harsh Vardhan Shringla: Going abroad is one thing, but going abroad and making negative remarks about your own country is quite another. The people of India do not appreciate such behaviour. Criticising the country on foreign soil is deeply unfortunate. During our recent delegations, even opposition leaders accompanied us and

a disturbing impact on the democratic world in general and India in particular.

India has rightly called for cessation of armed confrontation between Iran and Israel, stoppage of human atrocities in Gaza and a peaceful resolution of UkraineRussia ‘war’. India favours a multi-polar world order that helps India to take a non -aligned approach to global conflicts and support world peace and humanitarian advancement. As a major world power India must become self-sufficient in defence and economic growth and base its international relations on mutually beneficial bilateral friendships. India has done well to oppose terrorism of all kinds from international platforms and in particular, condemn faith-based terror as the biggest threat to the democratic regimes. India and US as the two largest democracies of the world are together in denouncing Islamic terrorism and whatever be the differences of opinion among them on matters of trade and tariff, they have complete convergence against this important geopolitical danger.

Notwithstanding the ‘political’ alignment that is there between China-Russia axis and Iran against the US, faith-based terrorism is not upheld by the Communist block- President Putin would not have forgotten the terror attack by ISIS-K on a concert hall on the outskirts of Moscow on March 22 last year in which 130 persons were killed and hundreds injured. Convergence on opposition to Islamic terrorism would help India to keep up its friendship with both US and Russia while continuing to deal with China as a major adversary.

stood united for the country. But to raise doubts and speak against the nation—especially at such sensitive times—is not acceptable. After Operation Sindoor, multiple delegations went abroad and sent out a strong message: India stands united.

IANS: Rahul Gandhi has been demanding a debate on Operation Sindoor in Parliament and is calling it “Narendra Surrender.” Your reaction?

Harsh Vardhan Shringla: Such statements are completely baseless. The world has seen how India asserted its strength. Within four days, our military conducted a successful operation with pinpoint accuracy—our BrahMos missiles struck nine terror bases with precision. Pakistan suffered heavy losses. In fact, it was Pakistan that reached out for a ceasefire. NSA Ajit Doval recently made a public statement confirming that there was no damage to Indian assets.

BRICS leaders condemn Pahalgam massacre; seek terrorists, their backers brought to justice

Rio de Janeiro, July 7 (IANS) In what is being viewed as a major diplomatic success for India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leaders of the BRICS countries on Sunday strongly condemned the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack while reaffirming their commitment to combatting cross-border movement of terrorists, terror financing and terrorist safe havens and also taking concerted actions against all UN-designated terrorists and terrorist entities. As many as 26 innocent tourists were massacred in the Pakistansponsored terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, a heinous

act condemned throughout the world.

The 'Rio de Janeiro Declaration' adopted after the first day's proceedings at the 17th BRICS Summit being held in the Brazilian city, expressed "strong condemnation of any acts of terrorism as criminal and unjustifiable," regardless of their motivation, whenever, wherever and by whomsoever committed.

"We condemn in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on 22 April 2025, during which at least 26 people were killed and many more injured. We reaffirm our commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including the cross-border movement of terrorists, terrorism financing and safe havens," read Paragraph 34 of the Rio Declaration.

Investigations into the Pahalgam

terror attack brought out the communication nodes of terrorists in and to Pakistan. A group calling itself The Resistance Front (TRF) - a front for the UNproscribed Pakistani terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba - had claimed responsibility for the attack.

While committing the barbaric act in Pahalgam, the Pakistani terrorists killed Indian and Nepalese nationals and injured several others after segregating them on the basis of religion.

"We reiterate that terrorism should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilisation or ethnic group and that all those involved in terrorist activities and their support must be held accountable and brought to justice in accordance with relevant national and international law," the BRICS leaders jointly stated on Sunday.

EAM Jaishankar holds talks on ‘regional developments’ with Iranian Foreign Minister

Rio de Janeiro, July 7 (IANS)

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on Sunday met Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit here, with the talks between both focusing majorly on the "recent regional developments".

"Glad to meet FM @araghchi of Iran this evening. Our conversation focused on recent regional developments," the

External Affairs Minister posted on X and also shared a picture in which he is seen shaking hands with his Iranian counterpart.

The meeting assumes significance as it took place against the backdrop of recent tensions in West Asia, including the IranIsrael conflict, and US strikes on Iran. India stressed de-escalation and "a return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy for an early restoration of regional peace, security, and stability". India has also underlined its concerns about security and stability in the West Asian region.

In the last week of June, EAM Jaishankar spoke to Araghchi and discussed the overall situation that emerged following the hostilities between Iran and Israel.

The EAM also thanked the Iranian FM for Tehran's assistance in the

evacuation of Indians who were stuck in Iran.

India and Iran share a millennialong history of interactions. The contemporary relationship draws upon the strength of these historical and civilisational ties, and continues to grow further, marked by high-level exchanges, commercial and connectivity cooperation, cultural and robust people-to-people ties, an official statement mentions.

Notably, India and Iran signed a friendship treaty on March 15, 1950.

Also, the visit of late former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to Iran and the signing of the Tehran Declaration in April 2001, followed by the visit of President Seyyed Mohammad Khatami and the signing of the New Delhi Declaration in 2003 deepened the India-Iran cooperation.

Hesitancy in condemning all acts of terrorism ‘betrayal of humanity’: PM Modi

de

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has warned that any failure or hesitancy to condemn all terrorism would be a “betrayal of humanity”.

Speaking at the BRICS Summit Session on Peace and Security on Sunday, he denounced the Pahalgam massacre as a blow to “entire humanity” that also seared the soul of India.

The Indian Prime Minister's call for condemning terrorism was answered by the 11 nations of BRICS, who in a joint statement condemned the Pahalgam terrorist massacre and reaffirmed their unequivocal commitment to combating cross-border terrorism and came out against those supporting terrorism.

PM Modi said: “Terrorism is the most serious challenge facing humanity today” and “condemning terrorism must be a matter of principle, and not just of convenience."

“If our response depends on where or against whom the attack occurred, it shall be a betrayal of humanity itself," he declared.

PM Modi urges BRICS to collectively pursue responsible use of AI

Brasilia, July 7 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on BRICS nations to collectively pursue the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), highlighting the importance of balancing innovation with governance. Speaking during the Outreach Session on Strengthening Multilateralism, EconomicFinancial Affairs and Artificial Intelligence at the 17th BRICS Summit, the Prime Minister emphasised the need for an inclusive and ethically guided AI framework within the grouping. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Secretary (Economic Relations) Dammu Ravi, PM Modi stressed that BRICS must ensure that AI governance prioritises both

innovation and safeguards.

"We in India believe in AI as a tool to enhance human values and capabilities," the Prime Minister said, adding that India's approach to AI is shaped by the guiding mantra of 'AI for All' and is actively being applied across numerous sectors.

United Nations SecretaryGeneral Antonio Guterres, also participating in the session, asserted that AI must not become "a club of the few". Guterres stressed, "AI must benefit all, and in particular, developing countries, which must have a real voice in global AI governance." He warned, however, that effective and equitable AI governance cannot be achieved without confronting systemic imbalances in the global order. "We cannot govern AI effectively -- and fairly -- without confronting deeper, structural imbalances in our global system," he said, pointing specifically to institutions like the UN Security Council.

Calling for reforms in global governance mechanisms, Guterres said the world is now multipolar and that multilateral governance frameworks, including the Security Council and international financial institutions, must be restructured to reflect modern-day realities.

PM Modi welcomes Indonesia as full BRICS member

Brasilia, July 7 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally welcomed Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto into the BRICS grouping as a full member during the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

PM Modi further said: "There must be no hesitation in imposing sanctions on terrorists. The victims and supporters of terrorism cannot be treated equally. For the sake of personal or political gain, giving silent consent to terrorism or supporting terrorists or terrorism, should never be acceptable under any circumstances."

He then threw a challenge to BRICS: “There should be no difference between our words and actions when it comes to terrorism. If we cannot do this, then the question naturally arises whether we are serious about fighting terrorism or not?"

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday (Indian time) said this while underscoring India's growing diplomatic stature and its pivotal role in shaping multilateral platforms.

Addressing a special media briefing on the Prime Minister's participation, Secretary (Economic Relations) in the MEA, Dammu Ravi, said, "The Prime Minister thanked President Lula for his warm hospitality and welcomed the Indonesian President for joining BRICS as a full member."

Additionally, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto took to X and posted, "With the theme 'Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,'

I, together with the leaders of member countries, exchanged views on various global challenges currently faced, while formulating joint strategies to enhance the role and solidarity of Southern countries moving forward."

"Indonesia is committed to continuously advocating for fair and inclusive global cooperation, as well as promoting national interests in the fields of economy, finance, education, and technology. This commitment aligns with the main pillars of BRICS discussions, which emphasise strengthening the multilateral system to achieve sustainable global prosperity," he added. Highlighting the significance of the summit, Ravi added that Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva placed immense value on Prime Minister Modi's presence at the event.

"The Prime Minister's visit elevated the entire summit. It reflects the value President Lula placed on India's role and the fact that India will take over the chair next year. PM Modi's participation assumes greater significance and importance, given that background," he said.

US, Japan, Hong Kong drive 89 pc of Q2 foreign inflows in Indian real estate

New Delhi, July 7 (IANS) Indian real estate sector received institutional investments of $1.80 billion in April-June period (Q2 2025), with investors from the US, Japan and Hong Kong contributing around 89 per cent to the foreign investments, according to a report on Monday. Investments more than doubled in Q2, recording a sharp 122 per cent growth over the previous quarter, said the Vestian report. Foreign investments dominated investment activities in Q2. Interestingly, majority of the investments from the US, Japan

and Hong Kong, around 69 per cent, were concentrated in commercial assets. Residential properties received only 11 per cent of the total investments, whereas the rest were diverted towards diversified properties.

The share of co-investments almost doubled to 15 per cent from 8 per cent, registering a marginal hike of 2 per cent in terms of value.

The shift from direct investments to co-investments by foreign investors' underscores their cautious approach, driven by a desire to mitigate risks amidst uncertain demand due to geopolitical conflicts and macroeconomic instability, said the report.

“Institutional investments saw a strong recovery in Q2 2025, primarily fuelled by a sharp resurgence in commercial real estate activity compared to the

previous quarter. While overall inflows remained lower on an annual basis, the substantial quarterly growth reflects renewed investor confidence supported by robust macroeconomic fundamentals and strong inherent demand,” said Shrinivas Rao, FRICS, CEO, Vestian.

This growth momentum is expected to continue as several rating agencies predict economic growth of more than 6 per cent during FY 2026.

Moreover, the recent reduction in the repo rate is expected to bolster positive sentiment by reducing borrowing costs and improving credit access for the sector, Rao mentioned.

Domestic investors accounted for 19 per cent of the total investments in Q2 2025, down from 21 per cent in the same period last year. In value terms, domestic investments stood at $336 million.

HD Hyundai joins hands with India’s biggest shipbuilder Cochin Shipyard

Seoul, July 6 (IANS) HD Hyundai said on Sunday it will join hands with India's biggest shipbuilder to bolster South Korea's presence in the global shipbuilding market. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co., HD Hyundai's shipbuilding affiliate, has signed a memorandum of understanding with India's stateowned Cochin Shipyard Ltd. to promote bilateral partnership in the shipbuilding sector, according to the Korean company.

It marks the first time a Korean shipbuilder has forged a partnership with an Indian

company, reports Yonhap news agency.

With the initial agreement, HD Hyundai plans to help Cochin Shipyard advance its technologies to a global level and improve its productivity, company officials said.

The two companies will also work together to win shipbuilding deals in India and the global markets, they added.

HD Hyundai said it will work to expand its foothold in India, which has the world's biggest population, as the country is working to foster its oceans industry.

The Indian government has reportedly vowed to make India one of the top 10 global leaders in the shipbuilding industry by 2030 and top five by 2047.

"This partnership will serve as a stepping stone for both HD

Hyundai and Cochin Shipyard to take a leap forward while also marking a turning point in accelerating India's national vision for its maritime industry," an official at HD Hyundai said. "Based on HD Hyundai's technological expertise and experience, we will help Cochin Shipyard strengthen its global competitiveness while also seeking mutual growth with Korean equipment suppliers."

Meanwhile, South Korea ranked second in new global shipbuilding orders in June, according to the report.

South Korean shipyards clinched orders totalling 1.05 million compensated gross tonnes (CGTs) for eight ships, accounting for 41 percent of the global total at 2.56 million CGTs last month, according to London-based Clarkson Research Services.

Empowering Migrants Expo 2025: A Celebration of Cultures, Communities, and Contributions

Brisbane is set to host one of the most vibrant multicultural gatherings of the year—the Empowering Migrants Expo 2025, taking place on Sunday, 3 August, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the iconic Brisbane City Hall. Organised by the communitydriven force Bhartiya Samaj, the event returns for its second edition following the resounding success of its 2024 debut.

With a theme of “Unity in Diversity”, the expo is designed to celebrate, support, and spotlight migrants who contribute to the social, cultural, and economic fabric of Queensland and beyond. The free, all-ages event promises a powerful blend of cultural performances, community exhibits, and a prestigious awards ceremony honouring outstanding individuals and organisations within the migrant community.

Building on last year’s turnout of over 3,500 attendees, the 2025 edition will offer:

• Live multicultural performances from diverse communities

• Interactive exhibits and workshops

• Community and business stalls

• Increased participation from Queensland government departments, service providers, and educational institutions

Whether you’re a community leader, a recent migrant, or simply someone who believes in the beauty of diversity— Empowering Migrants Expo 2025 is an event not to be missed.

A look back at 2024 Empowering Migrants Expo: A Milestone in Queensland’s Multicultural Story

The inaugural Empowering Migrants Expo, hosted last year at Brisbane City Hall, marked a defining moment in Queensland’s journey toward a more inclusive and diverse society. Organised by Bhartiya Samaj, the event attracted an impressive crowd of over 3,500 attendees, including community leaders, service providers, and families representing more than 20 nationalities.

The day-long celebration featured a dynamic lineup of cultural

performances, art displays, interactive workshops, and resource booths set up by over 10 government departments and community organisations. The vibrant atmosphere and inclusive programming left attendees calling the event “uplifting,” “empowering,” and “a proud moment for the migrant community.”

One of the most moving segments of the day was the Migrants’ Awards Ceremony, which honoured individuals and groups who have made outstanding contributions to migrant

wellbeing, youth empowerment, and cross-cultural unity.

For many Indian-Australian families, the expo served as both a cultural homecoming and a celebration of Australia’s rich multicultural landscape. It provided a space to share heritage, build connections, and showcase the strength of migrant contributions to society.

With the success of 2024 laying a solid foundation, excitement is already building for the 2025 edition, which promises to be even more inclusive, inspiring, and impactful.

Its work resonates across cultures—connecting communities from Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Pacific.

India’s rise offers new momentum for Australia ties: Envoy

Brisbane, July 10 (Australia India News Newsdesk)

India’s High Commissioner to Australia, Gopal Baglay, has called for a renewed push to realise the full potential of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, positioning it as a vital pillar for peace and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

Delivering a talk at the Australian Institute for International Affairs (AIIA) in Brisbane on July 8, Baglay said, “It’s time to get ambitious and deliver the vision of our leadership for the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”

He highlighted the growing convergence of interests between the two countries, particularly

in ensuring a “peaceful, secure, safe and open Indo-Pacific,” amid a complex global geopolitical landscape.

Emphasising India’s foreign policy, Baglay said it is shaped by a blend of present-day imperatives and civilisational values, which together promote dialogue, inclusivity, and sustainable global partnerships.

The High Commissioner also spoke of India’s ongoing transformation under the ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) initiative, calling it a catalyst for new avenues of collaboration.

The address was attended by scholars, diplomats, students, and Indian community leaders who welcomed the strengthening of bilateral ties.

India and Australia elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2020, expanding cooperation in areas such as defence, education, technology, and climate action. Baglay’s remarks reaffirmed the shared commitment to a stronger, forward-looking partnership in the years ahead.

2nd Test: Shubman Gill showed how complete a batter he is, says Jonathan Trott

Birmingham, July 6 (IANS)

Former England batter Jonathan Trott was left awestruck with India captain Shubman Gill's glittering knock of 161 in the second innings of the second Test against England at Edgbaston.

Lauding Gill's marathon knock, which guided India to a mammoth 427/6d and set a target 608 for England, Trott said it was pure dominance from the 25-year-old to show his batting maturity. Gill also played a career-best knock of 269 along with Ravindra Jadeja's 89 in the first essay to take the side to 587.

“I honestly feel privileged to be here and witness that innings. I can’t recall him giving the English bowlers even a single chance.

The way he shifted gears - hitting sixes at will - without slogging, just pure cricket shots, was

something special. Today, he showed how complete a batter he is. It reminded me of the previous Indian number four - almost a carbon copy of that genius. I don’t think he could’ve dreamed of a better start to his first two Tests on this tour. Sure, he’d have liked to win at Headingley, but now he’s hopefully set up a fantastic victory here tomorrow," Trott said on JioHotstar.

Former India pacer Varun Aaron also talked highly of the visiting captain and said Gill has done a lot of hard work for the England tour.

“Shubman just can’t seem to put a foot wrong, and I hope this form continues for as long as possible. But it hasn’t happened by chance. He’s put in a lot of hard work — even during the IPL — to improve as a red-ball player. He’s tweaked his tactics, changed his technique a bit, and you can see the results. When someone as talented as Shubman Gill puts in the hard yards, he steps into that ‘legend’ territory," he said.

Heading into Day 5, India are in a commanding position, with

England still requiring 536 runs to chase down a mammoth target of 608 in Birmingham amid rain threat.

In the final session of Day 4, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep made early inroads into England’s lineup, dismissing openers Zak Crawley (0) and Ben Duckett (25), before removing the world’s top-ranked Test batter, Joe Root, within the first 11 overs of the innings. The fiery spell firmly placed India in control as they aim to square the series.

On Akash Deep’s spirited performance and celebration, Aaron added, “Akash Deep hasn’t had an easy journey. He’s from Bihar and had to try for different states because the Bihar Cricket Association has had its struggles. He eventually moved to Bengalas an outsider - and had to earn his place among locals. He made a name for himself there. Coming from a small town in Bihar and performing like this for India in England, it obviously means the world to him. His celebration said it all - it was his way of saying, ‘I’m here to stay'.”

2nd Test: Jay Shah, Tendulkar, Kohli and cricket greats hail India’s historic Edgbaston win

New Delhi, July 6 (IANS) Some of the biggest names in Indian cricket took to social media to celebrate India’s majestic triumph over England at Edgbaston, their first at the venue, as the young Shubman Gill-led side drew the Anderson Tendulkar Trophy level by winning the second Test by 336 runs.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah described Gill’s outings with the bat as

‘innings of rare quality’ and said he was locked in to see what plays out in the third Test at Lord’s beginning July 10.

“An outstanding Test match showcasing the depth and resilience of Indian cricket. @ ShubmanGill ’s 269 & 161 were innings of rare quality, while Akashdeep’s 10-wicket haul marked a breakthrough performance. Valuable contributions from @imjadeja and @RishabhPant17 added to a well-earned team win. Looking forward to the next contest at Lord’s,” Jay Shah posted on ‘X’ India’s bowling and fielding had come under scrutiny following the five-wicket defeat in Leeds.

But in Birmingham, despite no Jasprit Bumrah, India’s bowling unit shined, thanks to Akash Deep’s match haul of ten wickets, including taking 6-99 on day five.

Sachin Tendulkar hailed India’s strategy to enforce a result and level the series 1-1 in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

“A lime innings from the of the moment! Congratulations, @ ShubmanGill, on powering India to a brilliant Test victory! @ RishabhPant17, @klrahul, and @imjadeja batted very well, especially in the 2nd innings. India’s approach was to take England out of this game and force them to play differently, making sure that there would only be 1 winner.

Swiatek lifts maiden

Wimbledon

title with 6-0, 6-0 win over Anisimova

who fell heartbreakingly short in the 2021 Wimbledon final. Her partner Mertens, meanwhile, secured her fifth major doubles title and her second at Wimbledon. Ironically, Mertens’ previous Wimbledon crown came in 2021 when she partnered with Hsieh to deny Kudermetova and Elena Vesnina in another dramatic finish. The pairing of Kudermetova and Mertens had been a top duo in 2022, notably winning the WTA Finals. After separating for two seasons, they reunited this spring and quickly regained form, reaching finals in Madrid and Rome before peaking perfectly at Wimbledon.

London, July 23 (IANS) Former World No.1 Iga Swiatek made history at Wimbledon 2025, storming to her maiden Ladies Singles title and sixth career Grand Slam crown overall at the All England Club with a dominant 6-0,6-0 victory over Amanda Anisimova in the final on Saturday.

Poland's Swiatek, the four-time French Open and one-time

US Open winner, added the Wimbledon title to her kitty, which made her a Grand Slam champion on all surfaces -synthetic, clay, and grass.

Swiatek registered a commanding 57-minute victory on Saturday, just the second 6-0, 6-0 Grand Slam singles final in the Open Era after Steffi Graf double-bagelled Natalia Zvereva in the French Open final in 1988.

Swiatek swept to her first title since she lifted a fourth Roland Garros trophy in June, and improved her record to 6-0 in major finals.

In addition to making her the first Wimbledon singles champion from Poland in the Open Era, the victory also marks Swiatek's 100th career Grand Slam match win. She is now 100-20 in Grand Slam main draws since her Grand Slam main-draw debut in 2019.

APrada for copying Kolhapuri chappal design

fter Kareena Kapoor, veteran actress Neena Gupta took to social media to call out luxury brand Prada for allegedly copying the traditional Kolhapuri chappal design.

Taking to Instagram, the ‘Metro In Dino’ actress posted a video where she flaunted a handmade pair of Kolhapuris gifted to her by the late Laxmikant Berde. In the clip, Gupta could be heard saying, “So, these Kolhapur slippers are in great demand these days. So, once I did something with Laxmikant Berde. I don't remember what it was. So, I asked him, can you get me these slippers from Kolhapur? He said, yes. So, he got them for me. This is the most beautiful slippers I have ever had. Most beautiful and handmade. I love them. Thank you Laxmikant. You are not there anymore, but love you.”

She simply captioned the video, “Real is real.” In the clip, Neena Gupta is seen walking while wearing Kolhapuri chappals.

On July 6, Kareena Kapoor took to social media to call out luxury fashion brand Prada. She shared a photo of herself wearing her original Kolhapuri chappals, subtly taking a dig at the brand. Posting the image on her Instagram Stories, Bebo flaunted the footwear and captioned it, “Sorry not Prada…but my OG Kolhapuri.”

Prada recently faced backlash

for showcasing a pair of sandals that looked very similar to India’s traditional Kolhapuri chappals without giving proper credit to their Indian origin. The luxury brand introduced the sandals as ‘Toe Ring Sandals’ during their Men’s Spring/Summer 2026

fashion show in Milan on June 22. Many noticed that the design was almost identical to Kolhapuri chappals, but Prada presented it under its own label without clearly acknowledging the Indian roots of the design.

Kolhapuri Chappals: Prada accepts Indian craftsmanship, open for meaningful exchange with artisans

elements can coexist beautifully.

The actress also explained that for her, fashion is not just about trends; it’s a personal expression where glamour meets comfort and strength meets softness.

On Sunday, the ‘Baahubali’ actress took to her Instagram handle and shared a couple of her stylish photos. She is seen wearing a chic black sequined gown that she teamed with a casual grey t-shirt. In the caption, Tamannaah Bhatia reflected on the power of layering, both in fashion and identity. She shared that while a black sequined gown and a grey t-shirt may seem like they belong to different worlds, to her, they felt like they were meant to meet.

After facing severe backlash, Italian fashion house Prada has officially admitted that the Kolhapuri Chappals, featured in the recent Prada Men's 2026 Fashion Show, is inspired by India’s handcrafted footwear traditions.

In a letter to Lalit Gandhi, president of Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Agriculture, Prada noted that it is “open for meaningful exchange with artisans”.

“We acknowledge that the sandals featured in the recent Prada

Men's 2026 Fashion Show are inspired by traditional Indian handcrafted footwear, with a centuries-old heritage. We deeply recognise the cultural significance of such Indian craftsmanship,” said Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, in a letter to Gandhi.

The luxury fashion house came under fire after showcasing the sandals during its Spring/ Summer 2026 menswear show in Milan, priced at more than Rs 1 lakh as against the Rs 300-Rs 1500 sold in Kolhapur’s markets.

After images of the collection surfaced online, social media users and Indian officials criticised the label for failing to credit the heritage behind the designs. They accused Prada of cultural appropriation and disregard for the traditional artisans who have crafted these leather sandals for generations. Gandhi had in a letter to Prada shared concerns that “the collection includes footwear designs that bear a close resemblance to Kolhapuri Chappals (Footwear) a traditional handcrafted leather sandal that has been awarded Geographical Indication (GI) status by the Government of India in 2019”.

Anoop Jalota calls for respect towards all Indian languages amid Hindi-Marathi debate

Mumbai, July 9 (IANS) Addressing the ongoing Hindi-Marathi language debate, veteran singer Anoop Jalota urged people to embrace linguistic diversity. Speaking exclusively to IANS, Jalota stressed the importance of giving due respect to Hindi as the nation’s mother tongue. He said that every language spoken in India holds significance and deserves appreciation. The singer shared, “See, every language is very important in our country. And we like Marathi very much. I

also sing in Marathi. Hindi is the mother tongue of our country. So, we have to speak it everywhere. But if we know other languages, it is good for everyone. Learn other languages and speak them. And speak your mother tongue Hindi.”

Anoop Jalota’s statement comes at a time when Maharashtra is facing tensions over a growing language dispute between Hindi and Marathi speakers. The controversy began after members of the political party MNS were accused of using forceful tactics against individuals who refused to speak in Marathi, leading to growing tension in the state.

Recently, singer Udit Narayan addressed the ongoing HindiMarathi language controversy and acknowledged the importance of respecting the local language and culture. At the same time,

he emphasized the need to value and respect all languages spoken across India.

He told IANS, “We live in Maharashtra, and it is my 'Karma bhoomi' (workplace). So, the language here is also important. Along with that, all the languages in our country are equally important.”

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray have recently voiced their opposition to the proposal of including Hindi as a third language in Marathi-medium and other government schools. This reaction comes after the Maharashtra government recently suggested making Hindi an optional third language in staterun educational institutions.

Kashi Vishwanath temple gears up for Sawan rush, 1.5 crore devotees expected

With the auspicious month of Sawan set to begin on July 11, preparations at Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple are in full swing. Anticipating an overwhelming turnout, the temple administration estimates that 1.5 crore devotees may visit Kashi this year to seek blessings from Baba Vishwanath.

Last year, the temple witnessed over one crore devotees performing Jalabhishek, a ritual offering of water to Lord Shiva. This year, the number is expected to soar even higher, and to accommodate the spiritual influx, extensive arrangements have been made by both the temple and district administrations. To manage the crowds, zig-zag barricading has been put in place for a smooth and safe darshan experience. Carpets have been laid across the premises to prevent devotees from walking on the heated temple floor. Facilities

like ORS solution, first aid, drinking water, and mobile toilets have been strategically arranged throughout the area.

Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga, one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas in Hinduism, holds immense spiritual significance. Devotees from across India and abroad travel to Varanasi during Sawan to offer water and perform rituals in reverence to Lord Shiva. The city transforms into a sea of devotion, as chants of "Har Har Mahadev" echo through its ghats and lanes.

Speaking to IANS, Vishwa Bhushan Mishra, CEO of the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, said, "Our SOP for crowd control during Sawan has been implemented. End-to-end barricading has been arranged, and German hangers have been installed to shelter devotees from the sun and rain. Health desks have been set up at five different points to offer emergency care."

He added, "We’re distributing biscuits, flour, chocolate toffees, ORS, glucose, jaggery, and water to help devotees stay energised. Our health centre is also operational 24/7. Special arrangements like gold cards have been introduced for children, senior citizens, differentlyabled, and physically challenged individuals to ensure they have a safe and comfortable darshan."

In addition to on-ground arrangements, digital broadcasting of temple rituals has also been initiated.

"Aartis are being streamed live through a dedicated web link shared with the Smart City project. Devotees can watch the live broadcasts from LED screens installed across Varanasi or online from the comfort of their homes," Mishra said.

Adding a spiritual and celebratory touch, flower showers—a tradition at the temple—will continue this year to welcome and bless the devotees.

Issuing a word of caution, the CEO urged restraint and prioritisation of health.

"The number of devotees shouldn’t become a recordmaking contest. We urge those who are physically unfit to avoid the crowd and instead seek blessings through our live YouTube broadcast or visit during less crowded days," he concluded.

India’s rising middle class to drive global leisure travel boom: Report

India’s growing middle class and its younger, travel-loving population are set to play a major role in shaping the future of global leisure travel, a new report said on Wednesday.

As more Indians explore new destinations, the country is emerging as a key contributor to what is projected to be a $15 trillion global leisure travel industry by 2040, according to data compiled by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

The report highlights that annual global consumer spending on leisure travel is expected to triple

from $5 trillion in 2024 to $15 trillion by 2040, making it a larger industry than pharmaceuticals and fashion.

This dramatic growth will be driven by rising incomes in developing economies and a growing preference for experiences over material goods.

India’s domestic leisure travel has already shown a strong recovery after the pandemic, with spending between 2019 and 2024 registering moderate to strong growth.

The Union government looks after the security arrangements in Jammu & Kashmir. So I will request the Union government to consult with Omar Abdullah and take necessary steps in the matter,” she said.

Mamata Banerjee also stressed a larger cooperation between the West Bengal and Jammu & Kashmir governments for the mutual development of the tourism sector in both states.

“There should be a memorandum of understanding between the two states for facilitating the tourism sector in both states and promoting cultural exchange.

2 Indian-origin students selected for internship at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab

New Delhi, July 4 (IANS) Two young Indians, from New Zealand, have made a giant leap to win an internship at US space agency NASA’s prestigious Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.

Shivam Desai -- a mechatronics engineering master's student from the University of Auckland -- and Taran John -- a third-year PhD student at Victoria University -- were among seven university students selected under a government initiative offering tertiary students in New Zealand the opportunity to work with scientists and engineers at NASA.

The international internship programme, sponsored by the New Zealand Space Agency, provides the students with three-

month placements with hands-on experience on cutting-edge NASA missions at the JPL, one of the world's premier space research centres.

"We're proud to support the next generation of science and space innovators," said Andrew Johnson, deputy head of the New Zealand Space Agency. He added that the initiative “aligns with the government's goal of building an aerospace-capable workforce”.

Born in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad, 24-year-old Desai developed a fascination for space in high school.

"I watched a documentary by Neil deGrasse Tyson while I was learning about gravity and orbital dynamics and that's when my interest really took off," he said.

He is currently working at the JPL on the deployment mechanism for antenna systems, particularly those launched on small satellites.

Dasai, based in New Lynn, also acknowledged his parents for

keeping him connected to his roots.

“We travel to India quite often. I have a lot of family there," said the engineering student who moved to New Zealand as an infant.

Bengaluru-born Taran John, originally from Kerala, is interning at JPL to assist with sampling on Martian or lunar surfaces. His research is focussed on improving interactions between astronauts and their equipment.

"JPL has played a role in so many major space achievements. Being here, you're surrounded by some of the best minds in the world. You can feel how close you are to bleeding-edge tech," he said.

He grew up in Lower Hutt but said he was proud of his Indian heritage.

"We've got a strong Malayali community in Wellington, and growing up around them really helped me stay connected to my culture."

Indian space regulator approves Musk’s Starlink services for 5 years

New Delhi, July 9 (IANS) The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (INSPACe) on Wednesday announced that it has approved Elon Musk’s Starlink for a period of five years in the country.

With this, the final regulatory hurdle for the cheaper internet service to start rolling out its commercial satellite broadband operations in India has been cleared.

In a statement, IN-SPACe said it "has granted authorisation to Starlink Satellite Communications Private Limited, New Delhi (SSCPL) for enabling provisioning of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation, namely Starlink Gen1."

"The Starlink Gen1 Constellation is a global constellation with 4408 satellites orbiting Earth at altitudes varying between 540570Km capable of providing about 600 Gbps throughput over India," it added.

The authorisation will enable SSCPL to provide satellite communication services in India.

"IN-SPACe authorisation to SSCPL has a validity period of five (5) years from the date of authorisation or end of operational life of Gen1

constellation – whichever is earlier," the regulator said.

Starlink now needs to acquire spectrum from the government and establish ground infrastructure for its services.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is set to grant trial spectrum to the US-based space firm to complete security compliance demonstrations.

Starlink has signed its first commercial agreements with VSAT providers in India.

VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) service providers offer satellite-based internet and communication solutions, particularly for locations with limited or no terrestrial connectivity.

Earth Intelligence a $20 billion new revenue growth opportunity by 2030: Report

New Delhi, July 9 (IANS) The cumulative Earth intelligence's direct revenue opportunity for technology product and service providers will reach nearly $20 billion from by 2030, a report said on Wednesday.

Earth intelligence will significantly impact every industry as it rapidly moves from government to the private sector, with annual revenue to surpass $4.2 billion in 2030, up from nearly $3.8 billion in 2025, according to Gartner.

“The future of Earth intelligence will be won by the vendors that move quickly to develop technologies that make sense of the oceans of raw data they collect,” said Bill Ray, Distinguished VP Analyst at Gartner.

Gartner defines Earth intelligence as the application of AI to Earth observation data to deliver solutions specific to industries and business functions.

It encompasses gathering and providing Earth observation data,

fit-for-purpose transforming it, and then using it to produce actionable insights with domainspecific AI models, tools and applications.

“The value of Earth intelligence data is only now being realised. For example, vendors are leveraging satellites to pinpoint fallen trees blocking railroad tracks in a storm, monitor the temperature of every metal refinery to assess global production, count vehicles to analyse traffic patterns and consumer trends, and track sea cargo to evaluate shipping activity,” Ray said.

These unprecedented insights are delivering immense value, and new use cases are being discovered daily as the AI vendor race intensifies with the everexpanding volume of available data. He added.

Currently, the raw data that fuels Earth intelligence is primarily collected and analysed by governments. However, there is a shift taking place.

In fact, Gartner predicts that by 2030, enterprises will be spending more on Earth intelligence than governments and military bodies combined, accounting for more than 50 per cent of total Earth intelligence, up from less than 15 per cent in 2024.

Shubhanshu Shukla experiments sprouting green gram, fenugreek seeds in space

New Delhi, July 9 (IANS)

Seoul, July 10 (IANS) Samsung Electronics plans to debut its first tri-folding smartphone later this year, adding a new form factor to its flagship Galaxy lineup.

"We are working hard to release it by the end of this year," Roh Taemoon, president and head of the Devise eXperience (DX) division at

Samsung Electronics, said during a press conference following the Galaxy Unpacked event to launch the company's latest Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 models in New York, reports Yonhap news agency.

The company has recently teased the arrival of a foldable phone featuring three screens.

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in March, Samsung showcased concept devices with tri-folding displays, the Flex G and Flex S, signaling its ongoing development in this area.

The anticipated launch of a trifolding phone comes as Samsung Electronics moves to solidify its lead in the competitive foldable market, especially amid growing pressure from Chinese rivals, like Huawei. Huawei's Mate X3 Ultimate, a tri-fold model, has already reached the market.

Samsung Electronics, known as a trailblazer in the foldable phone market since launching its first foldable model in 2019, has seen increased competition from tech giants, such as Google and Motorola, alongside Chinese manufacturers.

Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, currently onboard the International Space Station as part of the Axiom Space Mission 4, has conducted experiments on sprouting seeds like green gram and fenugreek on the orbital lab, said NASA.

Shukla is the first Indian to be onboard the ISS and the second astronaut from the country, after Rakesh Sharma, to be in space.

While in space, Shukla is undertaking several experiments, developed under a collaboration between the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), and NASA.

The experiment named Sprouting Salad Seeds in Space (SPROUTS), involves sprouting Greengram and Fenugreek seeds

-- commonly consumed on the Indian subcontinent -- in space to analyse “their growth, nutritional quality, hormonal and genetic response, and microbial content”.

Even as sending sufficient food on space missions is costly and unsustainable on long journeys, the SPROUTS study findings could pave the way for a sustainable food production solution in space. It will help astronauts grow plants to provide food and support crew nutrition and well-being.

"Plant-based food production systems can play a crucial role in achieving the long-term goals of human space exploration. The sprouted seeds can offer a highly nutritious alternative, providing more nutritional value per unit mass as compared to fully mature plants," NASA said.

“This investigation also lays the groundwork for future research to develop India-centric salad crops that help ensure an efficient and sustainable food source for long-term missions,” and "marks an important first step toward accommodating the unique dietary needs of Indian crew members,” NASA said.

Covid hospitalisation, family history, lifestyle behaviours behind unexplained sudden death: ICMR study

New Delhi, July 7 (IANS) Hospitalisations due to severe Covid-19 infection, a family history of sudden deaths, as well as lifestyle behaviours are some of the reasons behind the unexplained sudden death, according to a study led by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

The peer-reviewed study published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research explored factors associated with unexplained sudden deaths among adults aged 18-45 years in India.

It showed that Covid vaccination was not responsible for sudden and unexplained deaths seen among young and healthy individuals.

The study was conducted in 2023, following anecdotal reports of sudden, unexplained deaths in India's apparently healthy young adults, which were linked to Covid-19 infection or vaccination.

"Covid-19 vaccination did not increase the risk of unexplained sudden death among young adults in India. Past Covid-19 hospitalisation, family history of sudden death, and certain lifestyle behaviours increased the likelihood of unexplained sudden death,” the researchers said.

Using a multicentric matched case-control model, the researchers included 729 cases and 2,916 controls from 47 tertiary care hospitals across India.

The cases were apparently healthy individuals aged 18-45 years without any known comorbidity, who suddenly (were seen apparently healthy 24 hours before death) died of unexplained causes between October 2021 and

March 2023.

Four controls were included per case matched for age, gender, and neighbourhood.

The team interviewed/perused records to collect data on Covid vaccination or infection and post-Covid conditions, family history of sudden death, smoking, recreational drug use, alcohol frequency and binge drinking, and vigorous-intensity physical activity two days before death/ interviews.

“The results showed that receiving at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccine lowered the odds for unexplained sudden death,” the researchers said. Two doses, further, lowered the odds of unexplained sudden death.

On the other hand, “past Covid-19 hospitalisation, family history of sudden death, binge drinking 48 hours before death, use of recreational drug or substance and performing vigorousintensity physical activity 48 hours before death were positively associated”, the team added.

Women’s health more hit than men’s during Covid pandemic: Study

New Delhi, July 5 (IANS) Women's mental and physical health took a severe toll than men during the deadly Covid-19 pandemic, finds a study.

The study, published in the journal Social Science and Medicine, showed that psychological distress increased for both women and men during the pandemic, with women experiencing a greater rise.

The link between health behaviours and mental health weakened for women during the pandemic, with a healthy lifestyle no longer showing a significant

connection to mental health.

In contrast, these relationships remained consistent for men.

Before the pandemic, health behaviours offered greater protective benefits for women's mental health, but during the pandemic, this protective effect became stronger for men, revealed researchers from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland.

"We found that women reported poorer overall changes in health behaviours than men during the pandemic. Specifically, women reported fewer days of fruit consumption and smaller reductions in alcohol intake. We also found that psychological distress increased for both women and men during the pandemic, with women experiencing a greater rise," said

Professor Paul McNamee, who led the research at the University of Aberdeen.

To understand whether the pandemic had differing effects on the health behaviours of women and men, the team analysed national data from January 2015 to March 2023 to compare results pre- and post-pandemic. They found that women were more negatively affected by the pandemic than their male counterparts. "The adverse changes in women's health behaviours compared to men persist through to May 2023, suggesting longer-term effects were likely worsened by financial pressures during this period. It's important we keep tracking these trends," said Dr. Karen Arulsamy from Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore, who was also part of the study.

US researchers develop AI model improving sudden cardiac

New York, July 5 (IANS) US researchers have developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) model that significantly outperforms current clinical guidelines in identifying patients at high risk of sudden cardiac death.

AI decodes gut bacteria to provide clues about health

Tokyo, July 6 (IANS) For the first time, researchers from the University of Tokyo have used a special kind of artificial intelligence (AI) called a Bayesian neural network to probe a dataset on gut bacteria in order to find relationships that current analytical tools could not reliably identify.

Gut bacteria are known to be a key factor in many health-related concerns. The human body comprises about 30 trillion to 40 trillion cells, but your intestines contain about 100 trillion gut bacteria.

“The problem is that we’re only beginning to understand which bacteria produce which human metabolites and how these relationships change in different diseases,” said Project Researcher Tung Dang from the Tsunoda lab in the Department of Biological

Sciences in a paper published in Briefings in Bioinformatics. By accurately mapping these bacteria-chemical relationships, we could potentially develop personalised treatments, Dang mentioned. “Imagine being able to grow a specific bacterium to produce beneficial human metabolites or designing targeted therapies that modify these metabolites to treat diseases.”

The system, VBayesMM, automatically distinguishes the key players that significantly influence metabolites from the vast background of less relevant microbes, while also acknowledging uncertainty about the predicted relationships, rather than providing overconfident but potentially wrong answers.

“When tested on real data from sleep disorder, obesity and cancer studies, our approach consistently outperformed existing methods and identified specific bacterial families that align with known biological processes, giving confidence that it discovers real biological relationships rather than meaningless statistical patterns,” Dang explained.

New gene therapy shows potential for restoring hearing loss

New Delhi, July 5 (IANS)

In a significant scientific breakthrough, an international team of researchers has developed a novel gene therapy that can improve hearing in children and adults with congenital deafness or severe hearing impairment.

In the study, Swedish and Chinese used gene therapy and improved hearing in 10 patients, and the treatment was well-tolerated.

death prediction

The AI system, known as Multimodal AI for Ventricular Arrhythmia Risk Stratification (MAARS), integrates cardiac MRI images with a wide range of patient health records to detect hidden warning signs, offering a new level of precision in cardiovascular risk prediction, Xinhua News Agency reported. The study, published in the journal Nature Cardiovascular Research, focused on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

-- one of the most common inherited heart conditions and a leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young people.

"Currently we have patients dying in the prime of their life because they aren't protected and others who are putting up with defibrillators for the rest of their lives with no benefit," said senior author Natalia Trayanova, a researcher focused on using AI in cardiology, at Johns Hopkins University.

“This is a huge step forward in the genetic treatment of deafness, one that can be life-changing for children and adults,” said Maoli Duan, consultant and docent at the Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden.

The study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, comprised 10 patients between the ages of 1 and 24 at five hospitals in China, all of whom had a genetic form of deafness or severe hearing impairment caused by mutations in a gene called OTOF. These mutations cause a

deficiency of the protein otoferlin, which plays a critical part in transmitting auditory signals from the ear to the brain.

The gene therapy involved using a synthetic adeno-associated virus (AAV) to deliver a functional version of the OTOF gene to the inner ear via a single injection through a membrane at the base of the cochlea called the round window.

The gene therapy worked rapidly and helped the majority of the patients to recover some hearing in just a month.

A six-month follow-up showed considerable hearing improvement in all participants, with the average volume of perceptible sound improving from 106 decibels to 52.

The younger patients, especially those between the ages of five and eight, responded best to the treatment.

One of the participants, a sevenyear-old girl, quickly recovered almost all her hearing and was able to hold daily conversations with her mother four months afterward. However, the therapy also proved effective in adults.

“Smaller studies in China have previously shown positive results in children, but this is the first time that the method has been tested in teenagers and adults, too,” Duan said.

the importance of maintaining healthy and beautiful nails, especially during the summer months. Don't let the sun and heat take a toll on your nail health; follow these expertrecommended tips to keep your nails looking fabulous.

Use the Right Tools

Using the right tools is crucial for maintaining nail health. Avoid metal cuticle pushers, as they can cause damage and increase infection risks. Instead, opt for wooden or rubber cuticle pushers. Additionally, always use sharp, clean nail clippers and files to prevent nail splitting and peeling.

Chase the sun, not the damage: Smart skin care choices for summer

As the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter, many of us eagerly embrace the warmth of summer. However, the need for diligent skin care comes with the joys of outdoor activities and beach vacations.

Before diving into skin care tips, it's essential to understand the damaging effects of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can lead to many skin concerns, including sunburn and premature ageing.

"One of the most effective ways to shield your skin from sun damage is sunscreen. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) rating to ensure comprehensive protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas of skin, including your face, neck, and ears, and remember to reapply every two hours, especially if you're swimming or sweating," says Mansi Sharma, founder of The Honest Tree by Boddess.

Hydration is key. Summer heat can take a toll on your skin, leading to dehydration and a loss of moisture. Mansi recommends

to combat the heat by staying hydrated from the inside out. She says, "Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated and plump. Additionally, incorporate hydrating skincare products into your routine, such as lightweight moisturizers and serums formulated with hyaluronic acid or glycerin."

While sunscreen provides crucial protection, it's not the only line of defence against the sun's rays. "Consider covering up with lightweight, breathable clothing, hats, and sunglasses to provide additional protection for your skin and eyes. Opt for tightly woven fabrics and dark colours for optimal sun protection," adds Mansi. "When possible, seek shade during the sun's peak hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is when UV radiation is at its strongest, increasing the risk of sunburn and skin damage. Take breaks from direct sunlight by relaxing under a beach umbrella or finding shelter in a shaded area."

The founder of The Honest Tree by Boddess also suggests that while selecting skincare products for summer, opt for formulations that cater to the specific needs of sun-exposed skin. Mansi says, "Look for products enriched with antioxidants like vitamins C and E, which help neutralize free radicals generated by UV exposure. Incorporating a gentle exfoliant into your routine can also help slough off dead skin cells, revealing a fresh, radiant complexion."

Bhumi Pednekar marks Guruji Nirmal Singh Maharaj’s birthday with devotion

Actress Bhumi Pednekar marked the birthday of Guruji Nirmal Singh Maharaj with deep devotion.

She joined the celebrations to pay tribute to her spiritual guide, expressing gratitude for his teachings and blessings.

On Monday, Pednekar posted a couple of images from puja at her home and simply captioned it, “With his blessings.” In the image, the actress is seen sitting beside Guruji’s photo, with the floor beautifully decorated with flowers. In the following shots, her family members and friends

can be seen offering prayers. Going by the photos, it appears that Bhumi celebrated Guruji’s birthday with her loved ones.

Guruji Chattarpur Wale, also known as Dugri Wale Guruji or Shukrana Guruji, is believed by many to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Born on July 7, 1952, in the village of Dugri in Punjab, his real name is Nirmal Singhji Maharaj. Over the years, he gained a devoted following, including several Bollywood celebrities such as Jacqueline Fernandez, Hema Malini, and the Kapoor family. Several well-known

personalities, including the late actor Rishi Kapoor and political figure Amrik Singh, have hosted Guruji’s satsangs at their homes. Fernandez has also paid a visit to the Shiv Temple founded by Guruji in Delhi.

Meanwhile, speaking of Bhumi Pednekar’s work front, the actress most recently appeared in the Netflix series “The Royals,” where she played Sophia, the CEO of a start-up. The show also featured actors like Ishaan Khatter and Zeenat Aman. She was also seen in the crime thriller “Bhakshak,” inspired by the Muzaffarpur shelter home case.

Looking ahead, Bhumi will be seen in the series “Daldal,” where she takes on the role of a police officer, and in the much-anticipated historical epic “Takht.”

Reflecting on her choice of roles, the 'Dum Laga Ke Haisha' actress had earlier mentioned that she is naturally inclined towards stories that push her thinking and offer opportunities for personal growth.

Bhumi told IANS, “I just want to be a part of stories that are meaningful, that give me an opportunity to do diverse kinds of roles, that give me an opportunity to challenge whatever my thinking is, because as humans, it's very limited. Stories and cinema most times have helped me expand my world and my universe.”

Saanand Verma reveals how Hema Malini’s iconic ‘Basanti’ inspired his role in ‘Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan’

Uorfi Javed calls ‘The Traitors’

a smarter and more strategic show than ‘Bigg Boss’

Internet sensation Uorfi Javed has opened up about her experience on the reality show

“The Traitors,” calling it a smarter and more strategic format compared to “Bigg Boss.”

He revealed that he drew cues from Malini’s iconic portrayal of Basanti. Speaking about his character and preparation for the role Saanand shared, “My character is named Shauki Lal— the name itself is quite quirky and fun. He’s a cheerful, light-hearted driver who just can’t stop talking. He reminds you of Hema Malini’s iconic Basanti from Sholay— drives around and talks nonstop. His mouth is literally never shut.” “He brings humour, rhythm, and energy to the story and is one of the high points of the film. I initially thought of him as someone who constantly chews gutkha. So, I prepared with that idea in mind. But once I was on set, director Santosh Singh suggested I should try delivering lines without it. That clicked better, and we dropped the gutkha angle. Since this is a very natural character, I didn’t need heavy preparation. I’ve observed a lot of real-life drivers—especially those who talk a lot—and used that as a base.”

Saanand Verma added, “I’ve been playing fast-talking characters like Saxena Ji (Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai) for over 11 years, so quick delivery comes naturally. Plus, I’m always observing people.

Reflecting on her stint in the show, the model-actress said that while Salman Khan's hosted reality show is high on drama, “The Traitors” required contestants to use their minds and stay focused on the game, making it a completely different

experience.

Speaking to IANS, Uorfi shared, “I didn’t really see myself in Bigg Boss, since I left within a week. Bigg Boss is very different. The Traitors is a completely different game. In The Traitors, you have to use your brain. Fights do happen—naturally—when there are four different people with different personalities. But I controlled myself. The goal on that show is to win, not to fight. The Traitors is pure class on Prime.”
