Indian researchers earn 3 patents in assistive technologies for differently-abled

New Delhi, Sep 14 (IANS) A team of Indian researchers has reimagined the sewing machine’s foot pedal with assistive technology, enabling the entire

operation through hand control.

The first prototypes were tested by rural women with locomotor disabilities, and the excitement spread quickly, according to Sona College of Technology where the feat was achieved.

The idea came into existence after the researchers noticed that some women with restricted lowerlimb movement were unable to operate industrial sewing machines.

The Optical Sensor Variant, patented in 2024, recognises hand gestures to control the sewing machine. It is hands-free, lighttouch, and enhances both safety and adaptability.

The first in the series was the Load-Cell L-Plate Variant, patented in 2022. It replaced the traditional foot pedal with a hand-press system.

For the first time, differentlyabled women could sew independently and perform all standard industrial operations in

a garment making unit with ease and efficiency. This innovation also opened the door for them to earn a steady income in garmentmaking units close to home, according to the Tamil Nadubased institute.

In the past nine years, over 300 differently-abled women have been trained to use these patented machines. For many, this has meant not just livelihoods in tailoring and garment production, but also a renewed sense of dignity and self-worth.

“These patents are not just about technology,” said Chocko

Valliappa, Vice Chairman, Sona College of Technology, “they are about breaking barriers, creating opportunities, and showing that inclusion can be designed into everyday tools,” he added.

The Tamil Nadu government has sponsored these patented eleven sewing machines for livelihood support for differently-abled women at a Sona Collegerun community centre in Maramangalathupatti, Salem district. Another three hundred women have been trained at the centre.

not have more than four nonMuslim members.

The CJI Gavai-led Bench also refused to stay the mandatory registration of waqf properties, noting that the requirement had existed under earlier enactments as well.

A detailed copy of the order is yet to be uploaded on the website of the apex court.

On May 22, the apex court heard the petitioners’ and the Centre’s views over three hearings before reserving its order on issuing a

stay on the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 -- a law vehemently defended by the Union government as a tool to curb misuse of Waqf properties and ensure greater transparency in their management.

The validity of the contentious Act, which came into effect on April 5 with the Presidential assent, has been challenged by, among others, All India Majlis-eIttehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) MP Asaduddin Owaisi and Congress MP Mohammad Jawed.

The petitioners moved the apex court, contending that

the amendment amounted to discrimination against Muslims.

The new law amended the Waqf Act, 1995, to address the regulation of Waqf properties, that is, religious endowments or properties dedicated exclusively for religious or charitable purposes under Islamic law.

On April 17, a Bench headed by then CJI Sanjiv Khanna decided not to order a stay on the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, after the Centre assured the apex court that certain provisions would not be implemented for the time being.

On September 10, 41-yearold Nagamallaiah was fatally attacked and decapitated at a motel in Dallas, Texas. 37-yearold Martinez was arrested and charged with capital murder. He is accused of beheading Nagamallaiah and leaving the victim’s head in a trash bin.

A disturbing video circulating on social media showed Martinez chasing the victim with a machete and continuing the attack until Nagamallaiah was decapitated. He then kicked the victim’s head into the motel parking lot before picking it up and placing it in a dumpster.

On Friday, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)

has started the process of the attacker’s “removal” from the country.

In a statement, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughli also accused the Biden administration of allowing undocumented immigrants into the country.

“This gruesome, savage slaying of a victim at a motel by Yordanis Cobos-Martinez was completely preventable if this criminal illegal alien was not released into our country by the Biden Administration,” she added.

According to the DHS, Martinez was in ICE Dallas custody at the Bluebonnet Detention Centre until he was released on an Order of Supervision on January 13, 2025, under the Biden administration.

She took charge two days later, beginning her tenure by paying tribute at the Martyrs' Memorial in Lainchaur on Sunday morning before proceeding to Singha Durbar. She commenced her official duties from the Home Ministry's building, as the Prime Minister's Office had been shifted there following the arson attack on Tuesday that damaged the main complex.

One of her first decisions was to extend immediate relief to victims of last week's violent demonstrations.

Chief Secretary Eknarayan Aryal confirmed that those killed during the protests would be recognised as martyrs, with their families receiving financial support of Rs 1 million each.

According to The Kathmandu Post, the government has also ensured free medical treatment

for 134 injured protesters and 57 injured police personnel.

Ministries have been directed to prepare comprehensive reports detailing the damages sustained during the protests, The Himalayan Times reported.

The protests, which escalated into widespread unrest, have claimed 72 lives so far, including 59 demonstrators, 10 inmates, and three police officers, according to local media accounts.

Meanwhile, President Paudel, addressing the nation on Saturday, urged all sides to cooperate in successfully conducting the House of Representatives elections scheduled for March 5 next year. His remarks came amid growing criticism from major political parties following the dissolution of the lower house at midnight on Friday, a move widely seen as meeting one of the Gen Z movement's key demands.

and India always wishes Nepal’s peace and prosperity.

Referring to his wish on behalf of 140 crore Indians to former Chief Justice Sushila Karki on assuming office as the Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal, PM Modi said that a woman becoming the first-ever Prime Minister of the country is a shining example of women's empowerment.

Comparing the Manipuri women’s positive and active role in the society, the Prime Minister said that his government’s one of the priorities is women empowerment.

“After the recent youths’

movement in Nepal, India is hopeful of the neighbouring country’s peace, stability and progress. Democracy would be further strengthened in Nepal,” the Prime Minister said.

He said that Nepal has been a close friend of India and has shared history, faith and cultural ties, and India always stood firmly with the people of the neighbouring country during its transitional phase. The Prime Minister also lauded the resilience of the Nepali people and highly appreciated young men and women for their generous work in cleaning and painting buildings in the past few days, amid political turbulence.

FM Sitharaman said the aim is not just to keep pace with global developments but to take a leadership role in shaping AI adoption responsibly.

The 2025 Assessment of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Risks categorically identifies these groups as national security threats, marking a pivotal shift in Ottawa's counterterrorism strategy," he added. The 2025 assessment warns that while their operations are largely directed at India, the activities have serious implications for Canadian national security and foreign policy. ‘Man-made climate collapse, not natural’: Acharya Prashant on North India’s floods

New Delhi, Sep 7 (IANS) As relentless rains batter North India, philosopher and author Acharya Prashant has called the devastation “a mirror to our misplaced idea of progress”.

Speaking on the eve of the launch of his forthcoming HarperCollins book 'Truth Without Apology' at India International Centre, New Delhi, he warned that calling floods and landslides ‘natural calamities’ is a dangerous denial of their man-made roots.

Himachal Pradesh has lost over 340 lives since June 20, with landslides and flash floods cutting off entire districts. More than 1,300 roads remain blocked. In Jammu & Kashmir, rivers have surged past danger levels, while Punjab reports damage across 1,400 villages. Even Delhi

and NCR are battling waterlogged streets, cancelled trains, and transport shutdowns. “The scale of loss dwarfs every relief effort,”

Acharya Prashant said.

“Himachal’s hills are collapsing because we drilled, blasted, and cemented them year after year,”

he said. “When rivers are forced into concrete and wetlands into real estate, the monsoon is bound to return the debt.”

He pointed to the stark contrast between rural helplessness and urban negligence.

“Villages in the Himalayas collapse because they are too weak to resist. But what excuse do Delhi and Gurgaon have?

These are the richest cities. They drown not from poverty, but from negligence: storm drains buried, floodplains encroached, responsibility ending at the boundary wall.”

Acharya Prashant stressed that climate change is the decisive force behind today’s devastation.

“Asia is heating nearly twice as fast as the global average, which means more violent bursts of rain and more frequent cloudbursts.

NASA confirms floods and

droughts have already doubled worldwide in two decades.”

According to the Council on Energy, Environment and Water, the average number of floodaffected districts in India has jumped from 19 a year (1970-2004) to 55 a year (2005-2019). “This is not seasonal wrath; it is climate collapse unfolding before us. Yet three out of four of India’s floodprone districts still lack proper early-warning systems.”

He added that this crisis is inseparable from global climate feedback loops:

“Permafrost is releasing methane, glaciers are vanishing, and coral reefs are dying. Once these cycles begin, they drive themselves. To dismiss floods as accidents of weather is not realism - it is denial. This is not pessimism, it is physics.”

On the deeper injustice, he noted:

“The world’s richest 10 per cent drive emissions with private jets and excess lifestyles, while farmers and labourers lose lives and crops. Climate change is not only an ecological crisis. It is the violence of the rich upon the poor.”

Health and livelihood together: How PM Jan Aushadhi scheme is changing lives

Nagpur, Sep 7 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) is transforming lives across India by making essential medicines affordable and accessible. In Nagpur, the scheme has not only reduced the burden of expensive healthcare but has also created new opportunities for self-employment and small businesses.

At one of the Jan Aushadhi Kendras in the city, citizens are experiencing a major shift in

both health access and economic relief. People who once struggled to afford branded medicines are now getting quality generics at a fraction of the cost.

Relief for the common man

Aditya Gaddewar, a local beneficiary, shared his experience about how the scheme has helped his family: “Earlier, buying medicines used to cost us a lot, especially for chronic illnesses. But now, thanks to the Jan Aushadhi Kendra, we get the same medicines at much lower prices. It’s a big relief for families like ours.”

Ravi Kallewar, another beneficiary, echoed the sentiment: “Because of the high prices at private pharmacies, many poor people couldn’t afford treatment. But here, even

the underprivileged can get the medication they need. It has truly brought healthcare closer to the poor.”

Empowering entrepreneurs

The scheme is also a beacon of hope for entrepreneurs like Rajeshrao Rajeshwar Samarth, who now runs a Jan Aushadhi Kendra in Nagpur. He recounted his experience: “I came across an advertisement in the newspaper about the Jan Aushadhi scheme. I applied, and within just two days of submitting the application, I got approval. Officials from the scheme inspected the location and gave me the green signal.”

Rajeshrao’s pharmacy now serves hundreds of people and has become a model of affordable healthcare and microentrepreneurship in the city.

‘Hold tiffin meetings with people to understand their problems’: PM Modi says at BJP meeting

New Delhi, Sep 7 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday attended a two-day BJP MPs workshop held at the GMC Balayogi Auditorium in the Parliament complex here on Sunday and suggested leaders to understand the problems and issues concerning the people by continuously engaging with them.

According to sources, PM Modi said in the meeting that leaders should hold a tiffin meeting with people in every Assembly segment in their Parliamentary constituency once a month, so that people's problems can be understood in a detailed and precise manner.

Similarly, the Prime Minister advised the leaders to meet the concerned minister and officials before and after the Parliamentary committee meetings so that they have better information about the subject and he also stressed the ministers to ‘behave properly with the officials.’

While talking about the cleanliness campaign, he presented the example of Singapore and urged the leaders to think out of the box and do something innovative.

This crucial two-day meeting

comes ahead of the high stakes Vice-Presidential elections scheduled for September 9.

According to sources, the two-day workshop includes the mock poll to train MPs on the vote-casting process.

The BJP-led NDA has intensified its preparations and is leaving no stone unturned for the VicePresidential election and this two-day workshop is likely to feature a presentation which would apprise the MPs, both from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha regarding the poll process.

This time, the Vice Presidential election is seen as a 'South vs South' battle, with NDA nominee C.P. Radhakrishnan from Tamil Nadu (who has an old association with RSS) and opposition candidate B. Sudarshan Reddy from Telangana (former Supreme Court judge). The Vice President is elected by an electoral college consisting of members from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

The 2025 electoral college is composed of 788 members, including 233 elected (presently five seats are vacant in the upper house) and 12 nominated members of the Rajya Sabha, and 543 elected members of the Lok Sabha (one seat vacant in the lower house). Currently, there are 782 members in the electoral college due to vacant seats.

The election is conducted via a secret ballot using a system of proportional representation with a single transferable vote.

attendees express pride

the inspiring life journey of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The program, filled with patriotic fervour, left attendees deeply moved, many of whom described the experience as “mesmerizing” and “inspirational.”

Organised as a tribute to PM Modi's transformative journey from his humble beginnings to becoming a global leader, the event featured a cast of over 150 artists under the leadership

of renowned Gujarati poet and performer Sai Ram Dave. The two-hour musical dramatisation depicted key moments from PM Modi's life, showcasing his visionary leadership, policy reforms, and unwavering dedication to the nation.

Gujarat’s Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi, was among the dignitaries in attendance.

Chamoli (Uttarakhand), Sep 7 (IANS) In the remote hilly district of Chamoli, Uttarakhand, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) has turned the dream of owning a home into a reality for thousands of low-income families. Under this central government scheme aimed at providing “Housing for All,” a total of 1,818 people applied from nine urban local bodies of the district, out of which 1,536 houses have already been completed. Families are happy after finding dignified homes equipped with basic amenities like water supply, electricity, kitchens, bathrooms, and toilets. They were earlier living in fragile and temporary huts. The scheme has had a transformational impact on the lives of beneficiaries — offering not just shelter, but stability, self-

respect, and a renewed sense of confidence.

One such story is that of Vinod Lal, a resident of the Basantpur area in Gochar Nagar, who once lived in a kutcha house and struggled to make ends meet. Thanks to PMAY, he now owns a fully constructed pucca home. Overjoyed with this change, Vinod told IANS, “Earlier, we didn’t have a proper place to live. After applying under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, we received assistance to build our own house. Today, we are living respectfully in our new home. We are very happy and thankful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making this dream come true.”

His wife, Kalpeshwari Devi, echoed the sentiment with gratitude: “We are a very poor family. With the help of this government scheme, we received a house. We built a kitchen, a bathroom, and a toilet. This has brought dignity to our lives. We wholeheartedly thank the government for this opportunity.”

Row breaks out over Thiruvananthapuram Mayor Arya Rajendran’s London award

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 15 (IANS) With the local body elections round the corner, a fresh controversy has erupted after Thiruvananthapuram Mayor Arya Rajendran received a 'World Book of Records' award in London the other day.

While the CPI(M) leaders and Rajendran's party cyber supporters celebrated the recognition with congratulatory posts, opponents ridiculed the event as a “purchased honour”. The award, presented by the World Book of Records, an organisation founded by an Indian based in the UK, cited the Corporation’s sustainable

Top

development initiatives.

Sharing the news on Facebook, Mayor Rajendran wrote: “I am receiving the Certificate of Excellence at the World Book of Records function in the UK Parliament for the sustainable development works carried out in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. I dedicate this award to the movement and the people.”

Photographs of the Mayor holding the certificate soon flooded social media, accompanied by messages of praise from CPI(M) leaders and party sympathisers.

However, critics alleged that the event was staged in a rented hall and bore no official connection to the British House of Commons, despite posters prominently displaying the Parliament’s name.

Opposition voices further mocked the award as one “secured by paying money”.

The Local Self-Government Department had earlier granted official permission for the Mayor’s visit, based on an invitation dated August 22 from the World Book of Records.

The order clarified that the recognition related to the Corporation’s large-scale “Seed Ball” campaign, which mobilised over 6,000 children at Putharikandam Maidan.

According to the government directive, the Mayor’s travel expenses were to be met from the Corporation’s own funds, with air travel sanctioned on the basis of a recommendation from the Corporation Secretary.

As congratulatory posts and satirical trolls continue to clash online, the episode has triggered debate over the legitimacy of little-known international awards and the propriety of spending public funds on overseas trips for such recognitions.

Maoist leader with Rs 1 crore bounty among three

killed in Jharkhand encounter

Hazaribagh, Sep 15 (IANS)

In a major blow to the Maoist insurgency, three Maoists, including top leader Sahadev Soren alias Pravesh, who carried a bounty of Rs one crore, were killed during a joint operation by police and security forces in Jharkhand's Hazaribagh district on Monday.

The encounter took place around 6 a.m. in the Panitiri jungle under Girhor police station limits, close to the Bokaro-Giridih border. Security forces recovered the bodies of Soren and two other Maoists following the exchange of fire.

According to officials, a joint team of CoBRA commandos and police

‘My

from Giridih and Hazaribagh confronted the CPI (Maoist) group led by Soren.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) said that troops of 209 CoBRA and local police launched an operation during which "an exchange of fire broke out between troops and Maoists. The troops neutralised three Maoists and recovered three AK-47 rifles."

The CRPF confirmed the identities of those killed in the operation. Sahadev Soren was a Central Committee Member with a bounty of Rs one crore on his head. Raghunath Hembram was a Special Area Committee Member, carrying a bounty of Rs 25 lakh, while Virsen Ganjhu was a Zonal Committee Member with a bounty of Rs 10 lakh. All three individuals were neutralised.

Officials said no casualties were reported among the security personnel during the operation.

A search of the area is still in progress to track down any remaining Maoist operatives. This encounter marks the second major success for Jharkhand Police in as many days as part of its intensified campaign against Maoists.

On Sunday, security forces in Palamu district killed a Maoist carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh in an encounter and recovered an INSAS rifle from the site.

The slain Maoist, identified as Mukhdev alias Mukesh Yadav, was a member of the banned Tritiya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC), a splinter group of the CPI (Maoist).

Police said he was linked with the TSPC's Shashikant gang and had been active across Palamu and adjoining districts for several years, being involved in multiple Maoist and criminal incidents.

brain is worth Rs 200 crore a month, I don’t stoop low’: Gadkari’s sharp retort to E20 fuel detractors

Nagpur, Sep 14 (IANS)

Dismissing criticism against the government’s ethanol-blended petrol programme as politically motivated, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said that his brain "is

worth Rs 200 crore a month" and he is not short of money.

In his address at an event organised by Agricos Welfare Society in Nagpur, he said: "My brain is worth Rs 200 crore a month. I am not at all short of money, and I don’t stoop low."

His comments came amid the criticism of the government’s push for ethanol-blended petrol.

The government has highlighted that petrol blended with 20 per cent ethanol E20 is a cleaner fuel and has enabled farmers to get higher prices for their crops, such

new roadways buses

Jaipur, Sep 6 (IANS) Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma on Saturday flagged off 160 newly purchased roadways (Blue Line Express) buses of Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) from Amar Jawan Jyoti in Jaipur.

On the occasion, he also inaugurated a super luxury bus service from Jaipur to Kathgodam (Kainchidham, Uttarakhand).

The Chief Minister said that the expansion of safe, organised, and modern transport facilities reflects Rajasthan’s steady progress. He emphasised that ensuring access to facilities for the last person in society remains the state government’s top priority.

The addition of new buses, he noted, will help manage growing

traffic pressure and provide citizens with smoother and more reliable transport services.

Highlighting the launch of the Jaipur-Kathgodam bus, Sharma said it would bring relief to devotees visiting Baba Neem Karauli Dham (Kainchidham) and further promote religious tourism.

He added that the government has already been operating special bus services to major pilgrimage destinations such as Ayodhya, Govardhan, Salasar Balaji, Ramdevra, Shrinathji, Shrikarni Mata, and Kaila Devi since last year to ensure convenient religious travel for the public.

Before flagging off, the Chief Minister performed a ceremonial worship of the new buses and inspected their facilities.

The 160 Blue Line Express buses have been distributed among 12 depots across the state, including Vaishali Nagar, Vidyadhar Nagar, Shahpura, Jaipur, Hindaun, Dausa, Ajmer, Ajaymeru, Kotputli, Dholpur, Sawaimadhopur, and Bhilwara.

Senior Finance Ministry official killed, wife injured after BMW hits motorcycle in Delhi

New Delhi, Sep 15 (IANS) A senior official of the Union Ministry of Finance died, and his wife was left seriously injured after their motorcycle was hit by a BMW car near the Delhi Cantt metro station, police said, adding that a case has been registered under the relevant sections.

The victim, Navjot Singh, who was serving as Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs under the Ministry of Finance, was returning home from Bangla Sahib Gurudwara on his bike when the accident occurred on Sunday evening.

as sugarcane and maize.

Critics have alleged that the programme will lead to water shortage and damage vehicles. In an attack on the minister, they have also alleged that two leading ethanol companies are run by Gadkari’s sons.

Gadkari, without directly mentioning the controversy, said: "I give ideas to my sons, but I do not resort to fraud."

"Recently, my son imported 800 containers of apples from Iran and exported 1,000 containers of bananas from India to Iran.

His wife, Sandeep Kaur, who was riding with him, sustained critical injuries.

According to the Delhi Police, the accused, instead of taking the victims to the nearest hospital, drove them nearly 17 to 19 kilometres away to a private hospital in GTB Nagar, said to be linked to an acquaintance of the accused.

Officials confirmed that the hospital where Singh and his wife were admitted, Nulife Hospital, is around 17 kilometres from the accident site, despite several

medical facilities being closer.

The couple's son has raised questions about the decision to shift his parents to such a distant hospital.

"My parents were returning from Bangla Sahib when they met with an accident. And for some reason, they were brought 17 km away to a hospital in GTB Nagar. My father is dead and my mother is seriously injured," he said.

He also alleged that the BMW driver, a woman identified as Gaganpreet, who brought his parents to the hospital, appeared to have been injured herself, but the hospital has provided no clarity about her condition or whereabouts.

He further alleged that the hospital was being evasive and might be assisting in the preparation of a false medicolegal certificate for her.

The Delhi Police said that the car was being driven by Gaganpreet, while her husband Parikshit was seated in the passenger seat. When officials reached the accident site, they found the BMW lying sideways on the road and the motorcycle parked near the divider. An FIR has been registered under sections 105, 125B, 281, and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Officials added that section 238, which pertains to the destruction and concealment of evidence, has also been invoked in the case.

Pakistanis say Munir’s ‘dumper truck’ statement damaged country’s image: Report

Tashkent, Sep 7 (IANS) Pakistan's public has been hurling criticism at their Army chief, Field Marshal Asmi Munir, over his recent remarks comparing the country to a "dumper truck" on the international front.

During his recent engagements with the Saudi Arabia delegation, Munir, while comparing Pakistan to a "dumper truck", called India a "shining Mercedes", which sparked outrage among Pakistani citizens as people accused him of damaging the country's global

image.

"India is like a shining Mercedes, but we are like a dumper truck loaded with stones; imagine what happens when the two collide," Munir had reportedly said during his meeting with the Saudi delegation.

Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi quickly repeated his remarks, leading to memes, satire, and criticism on social media, including AI-generated images of a Mercedes beside an overturned dumper, Uzbekistanbased Zamin reported.

"Social media users across Pakistan described the statement as 'humiliating' and 'tone-deaf'," the report read.

It also quoted some comments -- a user commented, "How can Field Marshal Asim Munir call Pakistan a dump truck full of gravel? Is this what leadership looks like?"

We must implement everything that was agreed in Paris. We also count on the implementation of all the agreements to strengthen our air defense. On Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that 26 nations, mostly European, have committed to deploy troops as part of a future RussianUkrainian ceasefire, though not directly on the front line.

Speaking alongside Zelensky at a press conference after the meeting of the "Coalition of the Willing" on Thursday, Macron stressed the nations would contribute to a "reassurance force" that could deploy soldiers in Ukraine or provide support on land, at sea, or in the air, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Three people killed, Cabinet of Ministers building damaged in Russian strike: Zelensky

Quetta, Sep 7 (IANS) People of Balochistan, for the third time within a month, faced an internet blackout, a trend that has sparked criticism from rights groups, who say the ban is akin to denying "basic human rights".

Rights group Amnesty International has denounced the move, saying that "blanket shutdowns significantly curtail the right to information, freedom of expression, movement and peaceful assembly." An activist from Balochistan has termed access to the internet a "basic human right" and said that the authorities' motive behind the

decision was to stop information from reaching the rest of Pakistan and the world

Pakistani authorities announced the suspension of 3G and 4G mobile internet services in Balochistan from 5 p.m. on September 5 until 9 p.m. on September 6, citing a "law and order situation and existing threat alerts," The Balochistan Post reported. The order said the internet shutdown was needed due to the prevailing law and order situation and religious processions.

Slamming Pakistani authorities over the internet shutdown in Balochistan on September 5, Amnesty International stated, "PAKISTAN: Authorities have announced the shutdown of mobile internet services in Balochistan province for 6 September (tomorrow) again,

citing 'law and order situation and existing threat alerts', after the services were shut down for most of August on similar pretexts. Mobile internet is the only way to access the internet for many people in the province, and blanket shutdowns significantly curtail the right to information, freedom of expression, movement and peaceful assembly. An activist in Balochistan shares her perspective on how frequent internet shutdowns have been used as a tool to suppress protests and speech in the province." Yusra, an activist and political organiser from Balochistan, has shared her experience of doing her work and daily life without the internet, according to the statement shared by Amnesty International. The activist raised questions over authorities citing security reasons for the internet shutdown in Balochistan.

Baloch family holds protest for 34th day over son’s enforced disappearance by Pakistani forces

Quetta, Sep 7 (IANS) A Baloch family protesting the enforced disappearance of their son by Pakistani forces continued their sit-in at Karachi Press Club for the 34th consecutive day, Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) said on Sunday.

BYC stated that Zahid Ali's family, demanding his safe release, continues to hold the protest despite his father Abdul Hameed's

worsening health condition.

According to BYC, Ali, 25, a student of Karachi University, was "forcibly disappeared" on July 17.

"Day 34: Zahid Ali's Protest Camp Continues at Karachi Press Club.

Today marks the 34th consecutive day of the sit-in camp by the family of Zahid Ali, a 25-year-old IR student of Karachi University, who was forcibly disappeared along with his rickshaw on 17 July

2025. Despite his father Abdul Hameed's worsening health condition, the family continues their protest with steadfast determination, demanding Zahid's immediate and safe release. Their struggle is a painful reminder of the ongoing wave of enforced disappearances that continues to tear apart families in Karachi and Balochistan," BYC posted on X.

On Saturday, BYC condemned the extrajudicial killing of Mullah Bahram, a resident of Kech district's Koh Dagar, who was shot dead by "state-backed death squads" on Saturday. The rights body stated that the incident showcased a pattern of consecutive targeted killings in the area.

Trump softens ‘lost India’ comment, affirms rapport with PM Modi

Washington, Sep 6 (IANS) US

President Donald Trump has appeared to backtrack from his previous remark about "losing" India to China.

At a White House press conference on Friday, Trump was asked about his comment on whether he blamed anyone for "losing India to China". He responded, "I don't think we have."

He added that he gets "along very well" with Prime Minister Modi but was "very disappointed" with India over New Delhi's purchase of Russian oil.

"I've been very disappointed that India would be buying so much oil, as you know, from Russia, and let them know that we put a very big tariff on India, 50 per cent tariff, very hot tariff," he noted.

Earlier on Friday, Trump posted a picture of PM Modi along with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying that India and Russia seem to have been "lost" to China.

"Looks like we've lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest, China. May they have a long and prosperous future together!," he wrote on his social media platform 'Truth Social'.

The remarks follow a wave of intensified rhetoric against India from his administration and supporters.

White House Advisor Peter Navarro also repeated his accusations on Friday, alleging in a post on X that India's "highest tariffs cost US jobs".

Trump's aide Laura Loomer claimed on X that the administration is "considering blocking US IT companies from outsourcing their work to Indian companies".

Though she did not offer any evidence to support it.

In an interview with Bloomberg on Friday, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the "US is always willing to talk", but appeared to set preconditions for India.

"India doesn't yet want to open their market. Stop buying Russian oil, right? And stop being a part of BRICS, right? They are the vowel between Russia and China. If that's who you want to be, go, be it. But either, support the Dollar, support the United States of America, support your biggest client, who is the American consumer, or I guess you're going to pay a 50 per cent tariff. And let's see how long this lasts," he added.

South Korea proposes bilateral currency swap with US in trade talks

Seoul, Sep 15 (IANS) South Korea has proposed setting up a bilateral currency swap with the United States in recent trade talks with Washington, according to officials Monday, amid prospects of little breakthrough in Seoul's investment package in the US. Seoul has made the proposal of establishing an "unlimited" currency swap arrangement with Washington to defend its currency

in its follow-up negotiations on a tariff deal stuck between the two countries in late July.

Under the framework deal, South Korea pledged to invest US$350 billion in the US in exchange for Washington lowering its "reciprocal" tariffs on South Korea from 25 per cent to 15 per cent.

According to officials at the presidential office and the government, the US has called for a greater share of the investment to be made in direct cash, raising concerns that a massive dollar outflow could trigger a sharp rise in the won-dollar exchange rate.

As of the end of last month, South Korea's foreign reserves stood at $416.3 billion, Yonhap news agency reported.

South Korea and the US "are still negotiating the terms, and so it is difficult to say anything definitive about each side's position," presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said during a press briefing on Sunday, when asked if Seoul is seeking a swap deal. The finance ministry also said various measures are under discussion to help minimise the impact of the tariff deal on the foreign exchange market but declined to confirm specific details.

The two countries have previously signed swap arrangements only twice, during the 2008 global financial crisis and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.

N.Korea slams joint military drills by US, S.Korea, Japan

Pyongyang, Sep 14 (IANS) Senior officials of North Korea have condemned upcoming military drills by the US, South Korea and Japan, media reported on Sunday. Seoul will launch two simultaneous drills on Monday, including Freedom Edge, a

trilateral outdoor multi-domain exercise with the US and Japan, and Iron Mace, a tabletop drill simulating a nuclear-attack response with the US, the official Korean Central News Agency reported.

Kim Yo Jong, vice department director of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), said the "Guidelines for Nuclear Deterrence and Nuclear Operations on the Korean Peninsula" fabricated by the US and South Korea are a dangerous idea, Xinhua news agency reported. She said the North Korea will regard it as

CM Stalin hails diaspora as ambassadors of TN at London summit

Chennai, Sep 7 (IANS) Calling the Tamil diaspora a vital bridge between the state and the world, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Sunday hailed NonResident Tamils as “unofficial ambassadors of Tamil Nadu” and urged them to contribute actively to its progress.

He was addressing the “NRTIA UK Summit 2025” in London, which drew large participation from Tamils living across the UK.

“Tamils abroad have risen from modest beginnings to occupy important positions in many countries. You are demonstrating that Tamils are industrious and capable. Tamil Nadu lives within each of you. You pass on our language and culture to your children and strengthen the belief that no harm can prevail against Tamil,” Stalin said.

He appealed to the diaspora to stay connected with their homeland by visiting at least once a year, investing in projects wherever possible, and creating opportunities for young people in

Tamil Nadu.

“You must ensure that the next generation excels beyond us. Provide quality education to Tamil children and help them showcase their talent,” he added.

The Chief Minister also underlined government measures for Non-Resident Tamils, including the creation of a welfare board, a toll-free helpline, a revolving fund for diaspora organisations, insurance schemes, and the Vergalai Thedi Thittam to help younger generations trace their ancestral roots.

During his speech, Stalin recalled unveiling the portrait of Periyar at Oxford University earlier in the week, calling it a proud moment for Tamils everywhere.

Stressing the principles of equality, self-respect and social justice, he urged the diaspora to rise above divisions and remain united in preserving Tamil identity.

Thanking the community for the warmth shown throughout his overseas visit, Stalin said, “Come to Tamil Nadu often. I will always be there as your brother.”

With the London summit, the Chief Minister wrapped up his European tour that began in Germany, and is now set to return to Chennai on September 8.

North Korea says its status as nuclear weapons state is ‘permanently’ fixed

an unfiltered demonstration of their anti-North Korean confrontational stand and "succession" of confrontational policy.

The reckless show of strength made by the three countries in real action near North Korea will inevitably bring bad results to themselves, she added.

Pak Jong Chon, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the WPK, said Iron Mace is a "nuclear war rehearsal aimed at using nuclear weapons against North Korea from A to Z," while the Freedom Edge is the most comprehensive and offensive war drill for aggression in its scale, content and nature.

Seoul, Sep 15 (IANS) North Korea said Monday its status as a nuclear weapons state has been "permanently" specified in the North's law as it denounced the United States for repeating its "anachronistic" claim about Pyongyang's denuclearization at an international meeting.

North Korea's permanent mission to the UN office and international organization in Vienna issued a press statement condemning the US taking issue with the North's nuclear weapons program at a recent session of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

"We strongly denounce and reject the US provocative act of revealing once again its invariable hostile intention against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea ... and express serious concern over the negative consequences to be entailed by it," read the statement carried by

the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

North Korea said that while Washington has slammed the North's possession of nuclear weapons as "illegal," it is the US that undermines the international nuclear non-proliferation system through its radical nuclear arms buildup.

"The position of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea as a nuclear weapons state which has been permanently specified in the supreme and basic law of the state has become irreversible," the North said, noting it will "as ever thoroughly oppose and reject any attempt to change its present position."

The statement came as North Korea has been advancing its nuclear and weapons programs while snubbing dialogue offers by the United States and South Korea, Yonhap news agency reported.

Earlier this month, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited a research institute that developed a high-thrust solidfuel engine, where he said the new engine will be used for the next-generation Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile under development.

‘Oli’s ego has turned to ashes’: Nepal residents react after PM’s resignation amid protests

Kathmandu, Sep 9 (IANS) As Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned amid mass protests sweeping across the country, the announcement on Tuesday was met with mixed emotions - from anger to reliefas citizens accused him of leading a "corrupt" and "oppressive" government and some declared that "Oli’s ego has turned into ashes".

IANS spoke to several residents of Nepal, who expressed their reactions to the resignation, calling it inevitable after days of civil unrest and growing youthled demonstrations.

"This was expected. Prime Minister Oli had no option left but to resign. His government was corrupt and completely detached from the public’s needs," a resident said.

"More than 42 cabinet ministers

have stepped down. There is no law and order left. I fear the military may soon take over."

Another protestor said: "Oli’s resignation was bound to happen. Ministers are resigning one after the other. Let’s see what comes next."

Condemning the use of force during the protests, one resident said: "It’s unacceptable that guns were used against protestors. What happened was wrong. But now, Oli has finally stepped down."

Pointing to systemic issues, another citizen said: "Under Oli’s government, corruption thrived. The people of Nepal received nothing in return. The youth, especially students and teenagers, took action—and it’s commendable."

Another added: "The situation left Oli with no other choice. His ego has now turned to ashes."

Yet another protestor said: "We’ve burned the Parliament and homes of corrupt parliamentarians. I

want to burn down every house of those who betrayed the country."

Highlighting the power shift, another resident asserted that "Gen Z is awake 24/7. The next government will be under the control of Gen Z. This is just the beginning".

Earlier in the day, Oli resigned from his post. He submitted his resignation letter to President Ram Chandra Poudel, citing the abnormal situation in the country as protests intensified against his rule throughout the country.

In the resignation letter, Oli said he resigned from the post as per Article 77 (1) of the constitution to pave the way for a constitutional resolution of the current situation.

Oli was elected Prime Minister on July 14, 2024, as per a consensus reached with Nepali Congress, the largest party in the parliament. Some reports indicated that Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah could be appointed as an interim Prime Minister of the country.

Nepal: Infiltration of vested groups destroyed public and private properties, says GenZ leader

Kathmandu, Sep 9 (IANS)

KP Khanal, one of the GenZ leaders who called for protests against corruption and a ban on social media apps, said that the infiltration of vested groups during the movement resulted in violence that left nearly two dozen people dead in two days. Even though the movement succeeded in bringing down the widely unpopular government led

by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Khanal said he and his volunteer friends were fully against the vandalism and torching of government and private buildings.

Enraged by the killing of the 19 people in police firing on Monday, protestors vandalised important state buildings, including Singh Durbar, the main administrative centre of the government, the president’s office, the Supreme Court building, houses of the top political leaders, including that of Prime Minister Oli, who resigned on Tuesday and the headquarters of major political parties. Likewise, offices and business outlets of some of the important

business houses and corporate bodies were also set on fire, igniting fears among the masses. Kathmandu saw smoke coming out from different parts of the city.

“We were organising a peaceful protest and the crowd became bigger and bigger, and some people from the crowd started to attack the parliamentary building, inviting excessive use of force by police, resulting in the deaths of several people,” he said.

“We have not supported the attacks on the public and private properties on Tuesday, but some vested interest groups might be involved in attacks on those properties in the name of GenZ movement."

From protest to power play: Youth leaders at the centre of Nepal’s political turmoil

Kathmandu/New Delhi, Sep 9 (IANS) Nepal is witnessing its most serious political and civil unrest in years, 19 lives lost, widespread protests, and the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.

As the country navigates a period of uncertainty, attention has turned to a group of emerging

youth figures who have become central to the movement on the streets and online.

At the forefront is Sudan Gurung, a 36-year-old activist and president of a youth-led non-governmental organisation. Gurung first came into public life during the 2015 earthquake when he began coordinating relief efforts. The NGO has since grown into a nationwide network involved in humanitarian and civic initiatives.

In the recent unrest, the organisation reportedly used social media platforms to coordinate protests, including distributing digital flyers and

Gen-Z leaders divided as Nepal searches for next Prime Minister

Kathmandu, Sep 10 (IANS) Nepal’s Gen-Z leaders remained divided over the leadership of the next government in the country till Wednesday evening ahead of the crunch meeting with the top leadership of the Nepal Army, which has taken over the responsibility of maintaining law and order in the nation after Tuesday's mayhem in Kathmandu.

The Nepali Army had invited the leaders of the protests for dialogue following Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli's resignation from his post amid intense Gen-Z protests against his rule on Tuesday.

Several Gen-Z activists have been holding internal talks to finalise an apolitical figure to lead the next interim government. However, they have not reached any agreement on the name, according to two Gen-Z leaders.

"Several Gen-Z leaders have proposed former Chief Justice Sushila Karki to lead the next government," said Rabi Kiran Hamal, a Gen-Z leader involved in the discussion who revealed to the IANS that names of the former Managing Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority, Kul Man Ghising and Dharan City Mayor

Harka Sampang have also been floated.

Hamal, who has been claimed to be a cadre of royalist—Rastriya Prajatantra Party, however said that he wants a Gen-Z representative to lead the next government.

Karki, 73, was appointed as Nepal's first woman Chief Justice in April 2016 and retired in June 2017. She was briefly suspended from the role of Chief Justice after the lawmakers from then ruling parties — Nepali Congress and CPN (Maoist Centre) registered an impeachment motion at the House of Representatives in April 2017 against her for an alleged biased verdict. In another case, she was crucial to oust the powerful chief of the anticorruption body over eligibility grounds. Many consider her a very strong-willed woman. Ghising is credited for ending the chronic load shedding in the country as chief of the power utility body and his ouster by outgoing K P Sharma Oli-led government a few months ago had invited strong backlash from the public.

Sampang is a populist leader and was elected Mayor of the city as an independent candidate in 2022 local elections like Kathmandu's Mayor Balen Shah.

Surprisingly, Gen-Z leaders said that Mayor Shah is no longer in the picture to lead the next government after appearing to be the frontrunner to lead the next government until Tuesday.

Nepal’s turmoil rekindles monarchy talk but a return looks unlikely

is being asked is because just before the latest protests, a few months back the Rashtriya Prajatantra Party, along with proroyalists, Hindu nationalists, and anti-federalists held a massive demonstration demanding the return of the monarchy.

guides titled “How to Protest.” Demonstrations were held in major locations like Maitighar Mandala, with thousands turning out, many in school uniforms, carrying books and bags as a symbol of peaceful resistance. Also drawing significant public attention is Balendra Shah, the Mayor of Kathmandu, popularly known as "Balen."

A rapper-turned-politician, Shah has become a prominent voice for Nepal’s urban youth. His appeal spans social media platforms, where he enjoys strong support, particularly among Gen Z.

New Delhi, Sep 10 (IANS) The Prime Minister, President and scores of ministers have reigned in Nepal following the massive Gen Z uprising. Violence broke out leaving over 20 dead, the Parliament and the Supreme Court were set on fire. The question now is what is next in Nepal.

The fall of the K.P. Oli government is clearly a sign that democracy has once again failed in Nepal.

Since becoming a democracy in 2008, every government in power has been an unstable one. The country has seen 14 unstable coalition governments in the past 17 years thus signalling that there is something wrong with the system.

In the last 48 hours, questions have also been asked if the monarchy that once ruled Nepal will make its return.

The reason why this question

The protesters demanded the restoration of the monarchy. They also sought that the former king be reinstated as the head of the state.

The other demands included the revival of Hinduism as Nepal’s state religion. This was one of the major signals that the Oli government did not read.

He dismissed the protests and said that there was no chance of the monarchy returning. What he failed to read into was that the restoration of the monarchy was being sought because there was immense resentment with the government and people desperately wanted a change. They felt that the country was stable and better off when the monarchy was at the helm.

In 2008, the 240 year old rule of the Shah dynasty came to an end.

Major Australian bank hit with record fine for widespread misconduct

Sydney, Sep 15 (IANS) One of Australia's "big four" banks has been hit with a record-breaking fine after admitting to engaging in widespread misconduct.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) on Monday announced that the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) has agreed to pay 240 million Australian dollars ($159.5 million) in penalties in relation to four separate investigations spanning the bank's institutional and retail

divisions, Xinhua news agency reported.

ASIC said that ANZ, Australia's fourth-largest bank by market capitalization, admitted to engaging in unconscionable conduct in dealings with the federal government by incorrectly reporting trading data relating to its management of a 14 billion Australian dollars ($9.3 billion) bond deal.

Additionally, it said the bank engaged in widespread misconduct across products and services impacting nearly 65,000 customers, including failing to refund fees charged to dead customers.

ASIC said the agreed settlement,

which is subject to approval by the Federal Court, is made up of a 125 million Australian dollars ($83.1 million) fine for the institutional and markets matters and a 115 million Australian dollars ($76.4 million) penalty for the retail matters.

"Time and time again, ANZ betrayed the trust of Australians," ASIC Chairman Joe Longo said in a statement. "The total penalties across these matters are the largest announced by ASIC against one entity and reflect the seriousness and number of breaches of law, the vulnerable position that ANZ put its customers in and the repeated failures to rectify crucial issues," he said.

Iran reduces Australia’s diplomatic presence after Canberra expels its ambassador

Tehran, Sep 5 (IANS) Iran has reduced the level of Australia's diplomatic presence in the country following Canberra's expulsion of Iranian Ambassador Ahmad Sadeghi last month, media reported.

Australia's Ambassador to Iran, Ian McConville, has left the country, while the consular section of Iran's embassy in Canberra remains operational and is trying to provide services to Iranian nationals in Australia despite imposed limitations, Iran's Khabar Foori news website

quoted Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei as saying on Thursday.

Baghaei described Canberra's expulsion of Iranian ambassador as "unjustified" said it "affects the two nations' ties".

On August 26, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in a press conference accused Iran of directing anti-semitic attacks in Australia and announced that Sadeghi had been told to leave the country, Xinhua news agency reported.

Three other Iranian officials had also been expelled from Australia.

Albanese said Australia had gathered credible evidence that Iran directed at least two anti-semitic attacks against the Australian Jewish community

in Sydney and Melbourne since October 2023.

He said that the Australian Embassy in Tehran had suspended operations and all its diplomats are safe in a third country, and that Canberra would move to list Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation.

According to Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, it was the first time an ambassador had been expelled from Australia since World War II.

Later that day, Iran condemned Canberra's move, and accused Australia of following Israeli policies to divert attention from Israel's "ongoing atrocities" in Gaza and to increase regional tensions, and warned of possible reciprocal measures.

Australia: Two seriously injured following shooting, car crash in Melbourne

Sydney, Sep 2 (IANS) A man and woman have been hospitalised with serious injuries following a shooting and car crash in Melbourne's northern suburbs in Australia.

A police statement said that emergency services were called to reports of a car and truck colliding in the suburb of Epping, 20 km north of central Melbourne, around 9:30 pm on Monday, Xinhua News Agency reported.

One of the occupants of the car, a 23-year-old male, was found to have serious injuries consistent with gunshot wounds and was taken to hospital.

A second occupant, an 18-year-

old female, was also taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries consistent with the collision.

The driver of the truck was not injured. Police said that investigators do not believe that the truck driver had any involvement in the shooting.

Officers attending the scene found a third vehicle on fire a short distance away from the crash site.

A significant crime scene has been established, police said, and investigators are working to determine if the car fire was linked to the shooting and subsequent collision.

Earlier on Friday, in a separate incident, two police officers have been killed and a third has been injured in a shooting in southeast Australia, local media reported.

Australia faces rising dementia burden with over 1 million cases by 2065

Canberra, Sep 12 (IANS) More than 1 million Australians are projected to have dementia by 2065, a government report said on Friday.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare's updated Dementia in Australia report, the number is expected to more than double from about 425,000 people in 2024 to 1.1 million by 2065.

Women currently outnumber men with dementia, with 266,000 women and 159,000 men affected in 2024, rising to an estimated 662,000 women and 390,000 men by 2065, it said.

Dementia was the leading cause of death in Australia in 2023, accounting for about 17,400 deaths, including 10,900 women and 6,500 men, said the report, which includes Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, unspecified dementia, and other types such as Lewy body

dementia.

Dementia Australia CEO Tanya Buchanan said the report, released in the lead-up to Dementia Action Week on September 15-21, reveals the enormous impact dementia has on Australian families.

The report highlights the vital role of carers, with about 42 per cent of primary carers of people with dementia providing at least 60 hours of care weekly in 2022, Xinhua news agency reported.

Dementia is not a single disease, but an umbrella term for a group of symptoms, such as problems with memory, thinking, reasoning, judgment, and behaviour, that are severe enough to interfere with daily life. It's caused by diseases that damage brain cells, and Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause. While memory loss is a common symptom, other signs include difficulty with language, personality changes, and problems with balance or completing daily tasks. Dementia is not a normal part of ageing, though it is more common in older people.

Australia reports GDP growth of 0.6 pc in second quarter

Canberra, Sep 3 (IANS) Australia's rate of economic growth accelerated to 0.6 per cent in the second quarter of 2025, according to official figures released on Wednesday.

Porepunkah, 210 km northeast of Melbourne in the Alpine region of the state of Victoria, on Tuesday morning to execute a warrant related to historical sexual abuse allegations when they were ambushed and shot by a gunman.

Two police officers, who Victoria Police initially said were unaccounted for following the attack, were killed and the third was airlifted to hospital with serious lower body injuries, according to ABC News.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said during a press conference in Canberra prior to the fatalities being reported that he was "very concerned" for the police officers involved in the incident.

"Our thoughts are with the police for the work they do, each and every day. The men and women who wear our uniform, wear the uniform of the police take risks each and every day," he said.

National accounts figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) revealed that Australia's gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.6 per cent in the second quarter, spanning from the start of April through the end of June, up from 0.3 per cent in the first three months of 2025, Xinhua News Agency reported.

On an annual basis, it said, GDP rose by 1.8 per cent, up from 1.4 percent in the year to March. The ABS initially reported first quarter GDP growth of 0.2 per cent, but on Wednesday revised the figure to 0.3 per cent.

Meanwhile, Australia's annual rate of inflation hit a 12-month high of 2.8 per cent in July, according to official data published on August 27.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said that the consumer price index (CPI) rose by 2.8 per cent in the 12 months to the end of July 2025, up from 1.9 per cent in the year to June.

It marks Australia's highest rate of annual inflation since the 12-month period to July 2024, when the CPI rose by 3.5 per cent.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that economists had expected the CPI to rise by about 2.3 per cent in the year to July.

The annual trimmed mean, a measure of underlying inflation, also rose from 2.1 per cent in June to 2.7 per cent in July.

According to the ABS, the biggest drivers of CPI growth in the year to July were a 3.6 per cent rise in housing costs, a 3.0 per cent rise in food and non-alcoholic beverage prices, and alcohol and tobacco prices, which rose by 6.5 per cent.

Coffee, tea and cocoa prices were 14.4 per cent higher in July than 12 months earlier.

"This comes as supply has been affected by adverse weather conditions impacting major overseas coffee bean-growing areas," Michelle Marquardt, ABS head of prices statistics, said in a statement.

The Reserve Bank of Australia, the country's central bank, said in forecasts released earlier in August that it expected headline inflation to increase over the second half of 2025 before stabilizing at around 3 per cent through most of 2026.

Festivals of the Indian diaspora

Strengthening the tapestry of Australian multiculturalism

The sounds of drums, the colours of sarees, and the aroma of traditional Indian cuisine are progressively blending into the cultural landscape of every part of Australia, from the busy streets of Melbourne to the serene suburbs of Perth and Brisbane. In addition to residing in Australia, the Indian community—one of the fastestgrowing diaspora groups in the nation—is actively enhancing its social and cultural landscape.

Festivals are frequently described as occasions of shared joy, remembrance, and belonging rather than merely being ceremonial events. It is more than just nostalgia for Indians in Australia to celebrate holidays like Diwali, Holi, Onam, Durga Puja, Baisakhi, and Ganesh Chaturthi. It is about giving a gift to the country's multicultural ethos by incorporating their customs into the larger Australian narrative.

To see how lively these events have become, one only needs to attend an Onam festival in Canberra or a Diwali mela in Sydney. Grandparents recite mythological and historical tales, community volunteers prepare elaborate traditional meals to be shared by all, and young children born and raised in Australia perform classical dances at these events. These gatherings are not limited to Indians; Australians from a variety of cultural backgrounds also attend out of curiosity about another culture and frequently depart with a greater appreciation for the hospitality and camaraderie they experience.

In Australia, multiculturalism has always been about acknowledgement and respect, but it only works when people are open to sharing. The generosity of the Indian diaspora is remarkable. Instead of being exclusive events for the community, their celebrations are open invitations for everyone to participate, learn, and celebrate diversity. For example, Diwali is now celebrated with lights throughout Federation Square in Melbourne and even in Parliament House in Canberra, proving that it is no longer limited to community halls. These occasions convey a strong message: Indian customs are part of Australia's cultural calendar and not just the diaspora.

How these celebrations strengthen ties between

generations within the diaspora itself is equally significant. Through the songs, dances, and customs of these festivals, many Indian Australians of the second and third generations who might otherwise feel cut off from their roots rediscover who they are. Being proud Australians with strong ties to their Indian heritage gives them a sense of dual belonging. This identity blending boosts the diaspora's self-esteem and enables them to proudly and clearly contribute to Australia's cultural life.

Additionally, these festivities serve as diplomatic and amicable bridges. Not only do Australian leaders, ranging from federal ministers to local mayors, participate in Indian festivals, but they also recognise the contributions made by the Indian community to the country. They build relationships of trust and respect that go far beyond token acts by lighting lamps, tasting Indian food, standing on stage, and expressing gratitude. At the national level, the India-Australia partnership is strengthened by the interpersonal relationships created by this grassroots cultural diplomacy.

Festivals are not without their difficulties, of course. For community associations, planning sizable events, handling logistics, and guaranteeing inclusivity can be challenging. Nevertheless, volunteers consistently show up with unwavering commitment. Making sure that future generations understand who they are, where they're from, and how they can fully belong in two worlds is the goal of the endeavour, not just organising an event.

The human element is what makes these celebrations truly lovely. These are places where an elderly woman wearing a silk saree can smile at an Australian neighbour who is trying Indian sweets for the first time. These are times when familiar rituals can provide solace to university students who are away from home. Children can learn from these platforms that diversity is something to be joyfully embraced rather than something to be feared.

The colourful festivals celebrated by the Indian community in Australia serve as a reminder of a different story—one of unity in diversity—in a world where intolerance and division frequently make headlines. They tell us that cultural fusion leads to enrichment rather than dilution.

The Indian diaspora is playing a bigger and bigger role as Australia develops as a multicultural country. In addition to conserving

The promise of the India–Australia partnership

India is not just expressing a vision of economic advancement when it talks about Viksit Bharat 2047. It involves envisioning a society in which innovation, opportunity, and inclusivity serve as the cornerstones of a developed country. The idea that India's greatest resource is its youthful, active, and increasingly aspirational population is at the heart of this goal. However, aspirations are insufficient on their own. In order to convert human potential into national strength, they need expertise, education, and international collaborations.

Australia is a logical and reliable partner in this situation. Australia has long been known for its innovative universities, robust vocational education and training programs, and emphasis on industry-aligned skills. With over half of its population under 30, India, on the other hand, has the largest youth population in the world. India's demographic strength and Australia's experience present a clear opportunity for both countries to work together to create a future where skills drive prosperity on both sides of the Indian Ocean. The human face of skilling All too frequently, conversations about skills and development are framed in terms of arbitrary figures, such as the number of millions of people trained, the number of jobs created, or the GDP added. However, the core of Viksit Bharat and Skill India are regular young people: a smalltown mechanic eager to learn advanced manufacturing; a firstgeneration college student hoping to study in Melbourne or Sydney and return to his community with knowledge; a village schoolgirl who aspires to become a computer programmer.

They view skills as a ticket to independence, dignity, and a better life rather than as statistics. Australia is influencing futures rather than just economies when it works with India on mutual recognition of qualifications, teacher exchanges, and vocational training.

Complementary strengths, shared needs India has enormous needs. More than 100 million young Indians are predicted to join the workforce by 2030. This demographic dividend could quickly become a demographic burden if the proper skills aren't in place. Contrarily, Australia is facing an ageing population and ongoing skills shortages in a variety of fields, including renewable energy, IT, healthcare, and construction.

This is where the complementarity lies: Australia has the demand and the expertise, while India has the people. Joint vocational curricula, skill mobility programs, and

organised migration pathways can guarantee that Indian youth acquire globally recognised skills while Australia acquires the workforce it sorely needs. It is a partnership that strikes a balance between opportunities and aspirations rather than being a one-way street of supply and demand.

From policy to practice

A new level of seriousness in this partnership has been indicated by recent meetings between Australia's Minister for Skills and Training, Andrew Giles, and India's Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Jayant Chaudhary. A bilateral framework for skill recognition, cooperative training initiatives, and internships is currently being discussed by both nations.

Consider a nursing student from India who received training in both Bengaluru and Brisbane and who graduates with credentials that are accepted in both nations.

Imagine an Australian renewable energy specialist mentoring Indian trainees while imparting knowledge in Gujarat's solar parks. Imagine collaborative research on skill futures, where Indian and Australian universities map out the jobs of the future, whether they are in green hydrogen, AI, or elder care. These are not idealistic concepts; rather, they are the concrete results of political will and interpersonal relationships.

The role of the diaspora

Without mentioning the Indian diaspora, no discussion about India-Australia relations is complete. With a population of over a million, Indian Australians are among the fastest-growing immigrant groups and are already exemplifying how skills build bridges. The diaspora represents the best of both worlds, from students in Adelaide to doctors in Perth, from IT specialists in Melbourne, to small business owners in Sydney.

They are ideal representatives for the Skill India–Australia collaboration because of their firsthand experience juggling education, employment, and cultural identity in Australia. They are the role models, mentors, and intermediaries who can encourage the next generation of Indian workers and students to view Australia as a partner as well as a place to visit.

Shared benefits beyond economics

It is simple to frame this partnership solely in terms of economics—jobs, investments, and industries supported. However, the advantages are more profound. Exchange of skills fosters understanding and empathy. In addition to bringing back technical expertise, an Indian student who trains in

Australia also brings with them firsthand knowledge of Australian culture and its values of justice and creativity. In a similar vein, Australian professionals and trainers employed in India are exposed to its inventiveness, dynamism, and resilience.

The two countries' trust is strengthened by this cultural exchange. The fact that India and Australia can work together on something as human and futureoriented as skills at a time when global geopolitics is characterised by uncertainty sends a strong message: partnerships don't have to be transactional; they can be transformative.

Challenges on the path ahead Of course, there are difficulties in every partnership. It's still difficult to recognise qualifications, and bringing two very different educational systems into alignment is no easy feat. Just as there are worries in Australia about an excessive reliance on foreign labour, there are also worries about brain drain in India if too many skilled workers depart. However, difficulties are calls to innovate rather than obstacles. These issues can be resolved with the help of clear frameworks, open channels, and a focus on circular mobility, which involves reinvesting skills acquired overseas. Instead of zero-sum results, the focus should be on developing win-win models. Why it matters now It is impossible to overestimate the importance of this partnership. The world is experiencing a revolution in skills. Industries are changing rapidly due to automation, climate change, and digital transformation. The jobs of 2030 will be different from those of today. Australia and India must both get ready; they cannot do it separately.

India will require international collaborations that expose its youth to best practices and international standards in addition to domestic reforms if its vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 is to be realised. How well Australia handles its skills shortages and welcomes diversity in its workforce will determine how competitive it can stay in the global economy.

Prime Minister Modi’s China visit

New Delhi, Sep 7 (IANS) In the current geopolitics, the questions attracting world attention revolve around US President Donald Trump’s response to the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation(SCO) summit held at Tianjin, China, on August 31-September 1, 2025, India’s equation with the US and Russia, and China’s emergence as the other superpower besides the US.

It needs to be pointed out that Prime Minister Modi visited China for the SCO summit, and his one-on-one meetings with President Xi Jinping of China and President Vladimir Putin of Russia were a logical part of the same. India’s participation in the SCO conference at the highest level was a confirmation of the policy of the Modi regime to develop bilateral friendships with all for the country’s security and economic benefits, and an expression of India’s sovereign power to remain non-aligned towards world players. Russia had been acting as a ‘balancing’ power between the US and China, with its known antagonism coming off as a notable feature of the Tianjin meet. Also, India was able to give a message to the US that Trump’s ‘tariff pressure’ would not shake this country’s resolve to pursue its economic interests by ‘diversifying’ trade relations across the world. On the whole what happened at SCO summit has added to India’s standing in the international community.

Prime Minister Modi visited Japan

on his way to China-Japan is a leading member of the US-led Quad with its declared aim of countering China’s expansionist designs in the Indo-Pacific region, and this reaffirmed India’s commitment to the ‘nation first’ policy.

The event that stole the show from the SCO summit was the grand military parade held at Tiananmen Square, Beijing on September 3 to mark the 80th anniversary of Japan’s World WarII surrender.

The trio of President Xi Jinping, President Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un walking to the rostrum together, made for a compelling message of unity amongst them.

Putin addressing Kim as ‘Dear Chairman of State Affairs’ and thanked him for sending North Korean troops to Russia to put up a ‘courageous and heroic’ fight against Ukrainian forces. The chief of Russia’s Rosatom state nuclear corporation, Alexei Likhachev gave out that President Putin had promised to help China overtake the US as the world’s biggest producer of nuclear power.

The Beijing parade tended to confirm that China under Xi Jinping, with its military, technological and trade power now leads the anti-US block. President Trump reacted to the Beijing parade by accusing Xi Jinping of ‘conspiring against the US’ and, in an interview, reminded the Chinese President that the US had the ‘strongest military in the world’. In a lighthearted comment, Russian President Putin said that President Trump displayed ‘a sense of humour’ by talking of such a conspiracy. Putin went on to claim that ‘all countries with which Russia held talks in China

supported the Russia-US summit in Alaska and expressed hopes that it would help to end the war in Ukraine’.

President Putin seemed committed to peace talks to resolve Russia-Ukraine conflict as he acknowledged ‘the sincerity of efforts by US to find a settlement for Europe’s biggest land war since WW-II’ and added that he saw ‘a certain light at the end of the tunnel’.

The Russian President used the Beijing visit to convey a message to Kyiv that there was a chance to end the war in Ukraine through negotiations ‘ if common sense prevails’ and stated that he would prefer that option but would not hesitate ‘to end it by force if that was the only way’. He said he was ready to hold talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy even though the latter had avoided facing reelection by imposing Martial Law and ‘presided over an illegitimate regime’. President Putin as already mentioned seems to be playing a’balancing role’ between US and China and also between India and China. He reprimanded his US counterpart Donald Trump for attempting to exert ‘colonial era pressure tactics’ on India and China by talking of ‘punitive’ tariffs and pointed out that these were ‘powerful economies’ in their own right which deserved to be treated as ‘partners’.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to China after seven years has apparently yielded modest gains in the ongoing process of rebuilding bilateral relations that had dipped because of Galwan. Indian Prime Minister made a reassuring remark that ‘bilateral ties should not be seen through a third country lens’ while China also claimed that India had joined China in opposing ‘unilateral bullying’-a clear reference to

Trump’s arbitrary tariffs. In his meeting with Xi Jinping on the sideline of SCO summit, Prime Minister Modi ‘underlined the importance of peace and tranquility in the border areas for continued development of bilateral relations’-the Chinese President taking the line that the two countries ‘must not let the border issue come in the way’ of improvement of their relationship. While maintaining vigilance against China as a potential adversary, India can explore the power of flexibility to try out a dual- track approach towards that country.

In an uncertain global landscape, India’s belief in a multipolar world order, strategic autonomy and position of this country as a major voice on issues of ‘war and peace’ as also on humanitarian development, has stood the test of time and needs to be pursued without undue expectations from any quarters. It is seen that trade negotiations between India and the US have been stalled with the sixth round scheduled for August 25 getting postponed following the tariff escalation.

However, Indian Commerce Minister, Piyush Goyal, leading the Indian side maintained that both sides hoped to conclude a trade deal soon enough.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump said on September 3 that there was no lowering the punitive tariff imposed on India but added in the same breadth that ‘ we get along with India very well’. India has called the tariffs ‘unjustified and unreasonable’ but maintained that it will take all necessary measures to safeguard ‘its national interests and economic security’.

India is adhering to strategic patience in handling the ‘transactional’ style of functioning of President Trump. Sticking to the principle of national sovereignty in deciding about its purchase of oil from Russia, it is

using the grid of understanding that exists between India and Russia to handle the issue. On trade it is exploring the prospect of diversifying its deals with countries of Europe, the South and Eurasia. A guarded approach to India-China trade relations is fine. There is a new era of smart diplomacy setting in and India was well-positioned to make use of it.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Tianjin in China for the SCO summit was not expected to materially alter the fact of IndiaChina relations being under a shadow of distrust and hostility that had built up around border disputes, military support of China to Pakistan in the armed confrontation between India and Pakistan following the Pak-directed terrorist attack at Pahalgam and the expansion of Chinese influence in India’s neighbourhood. In spite of the provocation of ‘punitive’ tariff imposed on India by President Trump for the import of oil from Russia, the nature of relationship of India with US-Israel axis remained substantially strong.

President Putin reportedly shared with Prime Minister Modi his impression of a favourable outcome of the Alaska summit between him and President Trump. The triangular equation of goodwill between US, Russia and India is largely undisturbed. The adverse comments of Donald Trump on SCO can be interpreted basically as an expression of Trump’s disapproval of China trying to emerge as the second superpower. President Trump makes a clear distinction between Putin and Xi Jinping. All of this enables India to play its diplomatic cards for preserving its best interests and also for enhancing its standing as a major power in today’s world.

their culture, they are enhancing Australia's identity with their festivals. The colours of Holi, the sounds of Carnatic music, the Diwali diya lamps, and the flavours of Kerala's Onam sadhya are all now as much a part of Australia as they are of India. Indian Australians are making a subtle but significant statement by openly and proudly celebrating their festivals: multiculturalism is a lived reality, not a policy. And the richness of a genuinely shared future is revealed in these festivities, no matter how small.

the nation. Does the national emblem have a religion? Perhaps this question, never seriously contemplated in all the decades since India became a Republic, has now surfaced as a disturbing reality in the 79th year of Independence.

The emblem, adopted on January 26, 1950, features four lions standing back-to-back on a circular abacus, with a Dharma Chakra at its centre. Sculptures of an elephant, horse, bull, and lion, separated by Dharma Chakras, adorn the abacus. Below it, the motto 'Satyameva Jayate (Truth Alone Triumphs)' is inscribed. Where is religion in all this? Do not all faiths proclaim that truth alone triumphs?

What happened in Kashmir on September 5 is not merely a religious controversy -- it is the manifestation of a festering wound that resurfaces from time to time, aided by sinister forces

backed by Pakistan and abetted by certain local elements in Kashmir. Some operate under the garb of religious, social, or political activism, and some are even leaders.

The national emblem was engraved on a plaque outside the main prayer hall of the shrine, which had been under renovation for several months. It was reopened to the public after a ceremonial inauguration by Dr. Syed Darakhshan Andrabi, Chairperson of the Jammu & Kashmir Waqf Board. Crowds thronged the renovated shrine, marvelling at its refurbished look.

Alongside traditional artistry, the shrine now boasts a modern digital electrical network, central air-conditioning, and advanced sound and surveillance systems. This was the first major interior transformation since 1968, blending modernity with Kashmir's cultural heritage.

All seemed well, with congratulatory messages pouring in -- until Friday, when a group vandalised the emblem while raising religious slogans, many filming the act.

Soon after, NC Chief Spokesperson and MLA Tanvir Sadiq posted on social media: "I'm not a religious scholar, but in Islam, idol worship is strictly forbidden -- the gravest of sins. The foundation of our faith is Tawheed. Placing a sculpted figure at the revered Hazratbal Dargah goes against this belief. Sacred spaces must reflect only the purity of Tawheed, nothing else."

Such an immediate statement, one that touched religious sensitivities, inevitably stoked emotions. The Waqf Board chief condemned the act and blamed the NC MLA, calling for an FIR against Sadiq and stating that those responsible should be

treated as militants.

The ruling NC also issued a statement reinforcing Sadiq's claims of religious violations: "… It is a matter of grave concern that practices contrary to the fundamental principles of Islam, such as the use of pictorial or symbolic depictions of living beings, are being introduced inside the sacred Hazratbal shrine -- the spiritual heart of our people where thousands gather daily for prayers. In Islam, the principle of Tawheed clearly prohibits such representations. For devotees, this is not a small matter but a direct affront to their deeply held religious sentiments."

The NC also attacked the Waqf chief: "The Waqf is not the personal estate of any individual… We now witness an unelected individual, with no mandate from the people of Jammu and Kashmir, crowning herself inside holy shrines..."

US Open: Alcaraz beats Sinner to clinch men’s singles title and world No. 1 crown

New York, Sep 8 (IANS) Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner, the game’s premier hard-court player, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, to claim his sixth major title and second at the US Open.

The 22-year-old Alcaraz hit all the high notes and kept his rival at bay across the pair’s 15th career meeting and third consecutive Grand Slam final, locking up his triumph in two hours, 42 minutes. Alcaraz and Sinner have dominated the majors since the start of 2024, winning each of the last eight, but it is the Spaniard who has taken hold of his iconic rivalry with Sinner, snagging

seven of the pair’s last eight meetings, five of their last six finals, and two of the three major finals they contested in 2025.

US Open triumph makes Alcaraz the second youngest male player in history to claim six major titles, and enables a triumphant return to the top of the ATP rankings.

Alcaraz will begin his 37th week at No. 1 on Monday, returning to the top spot for the first time since September 2023.

Moreover, Alcaraz has become the fourth player in history to have won multiple major titles on all three surfaces (two on hard, two on clay and two on grass). He

joins Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Mats Wilander on the list. Sinner, who was on a 27-match winning streak at hard-court majors before Sunday, was bidding to become just the seventh man in the Open Era to win three Grand Slam singles titles in the same season.

By reaching the final in New York, the Australian Open and Wimbledon champion had already become the youngest man in the Open Era to play the final at all four majors in a season: Sinner also reached the final at Roland Garros, where he held three championship points before falling to Alcaraz in an all-time classic.

Alcaraz was crisp from the get-go, and as a result, Sinner’s troubles started early, the Italian facing his first break point just four minutes into the final.

Four more minutes—and a few jaw-dropping slingshot forehands later—and Alcaraz had already drawn first blood, taking the 1-0 advantage just nine minutes in.

Firing on all cylinders, Alcaraz engineered another break for

Hockey: India lift fourth Men’s Asia Cup title with 4-1 win over Korea, qualify for 2026 World Cup

Rajgir, Sep 7 (IANS) India lifted their fourth Hockey Men's Asia Cup crown with a commanding 4-1 victory over South Korea in the final in Rajgir, Bihar, on Sunday. The triumph marks India’s first continental title in eight years and secures their qualification for next year’s World Cup in Belgium and Netherlands. Sukhjeet Singh, Dilpreet Singh

and Amit Rohidas found the back of the net for the hosts, with Dilpreet bagging a brace. Korea’s Son Dain managed a consolation strike in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough to derail India’s dominance. Jugraj Singh nearly added to the tally but saw his penalty stroke saved.

The victory capped off a memorable campaign for India, who entered the final brimming with confidence after dismantling China 7-0 in the Super 4s. That win was a showcase of their attacking depth: Abhishek scored twice, while Shilanand Lakra, Dilpreet Singh, Mandeep Singh, Raj Kumar Pal, and Sukhjeet Singh also got on the scoresheet.

India maintained their unbeaten record in the tournament, including five wins and a draw. Under the leadership of Harmanpreet Singh, India dominated the pool stage with three consecutive wins. In the Super 4s, they continued their strong run with emphatic victories over Malaysia (4-1) and China (7-0), while settling for a 2-2 draw against South Korea.

This marks India’s fourth Asia Cup triumph, adding to their previous titles in 2003, 2007, and 2017. South Korea remain the most successful team in the competition’s history with five titles - claimed in 1994, 1999, 2009, 2013 and 2022.

Lamboria bagged gold medals, while Nupur clinched silver and Pooja Rani took the bronze in the 2025 edition of the World Boxing Championship here on Sunday.

Asia Cup: Kuldeep, Axar, Suryakumar star in India’s thumping victory over Pakistan

Dubai, Sep 14 (IANS) Suryakumar Yadav celebrated his 35th birthday in style by hitting an unbeaten 47 off 37 balls to guide India to a clinical seven-wicket win over Pakistan in a marquee Group A clash of the 2025 Men's T20 Asia Cup at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium here on Sunday.

Earlier, India’s spin-heavy strategy proved decisive for the second game running. Left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav led the charge with figures of 3-18, while Axar Patel chipped in with 2-18. Varun Chakaravarthy had figures of 1-24, as the trio operated with remarkable control on a sluggish Dubai pitch to restrict Pakistan to 127/9.

The sluggish Dubai surface further aided India’s tweakers, whose control and variations left Pakistan struggling for momentum throughout their innings. While Sahibzada Farham top-scored with 40, a late flourish from Shaheen Shah Afridi, who hit an unbeaten 16-ball 33, gave some respectability to Pakistan’s low score.

Chasing 128 was always going to be an easy ask, and India cruised to victory with 25 balls to spare.

It was a game where the reigning T20 World Cup champions showed how much superior they were to Pakistan in all aspects of the game.

After the chase was over, Suryakumar and Shivam Dube (10 not out) walked off briskly, with no handshakes exchanged between players once again or the support staff. It came in the backdrop of the game being played for the first time after heightened diplomatic tensions between the two teams earlier this year.

India’s easy chase was also helped by brisk contributions from Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma - both left-handed batters scoring 31 each, as India registered their second consecutive win in the tournament, which also boosts their net run rate.

Abhishek got India off to a blistering start by lofting Shaheen Shah Afridi straight over the umpire’s head for four and followed it up with a clean strike over long-off for six. Shubman Gill hit two sublime fours off Saim Ayub before the batter was stumped for 10. Abhishek continued his blistering assault by slashing Shaheen behind point for four with an open bat face, before whipping him over mid-wicket for six. Ayub came for a thrashing from Abhishek when he lofted and drove through extra cover for consecutive boundaries.

Italian GP: Verstappen wins as McLaren secure double podium

and surge clear.

From there, Verstappen appeared to have everything under control, managing the gap back to both McLarens across their opening stints, pitting earlier than Norris and Piastri to strengthen that advantage and then cruising to the chequered flag.

Despite playing in their first-ever world championships final, both Minakshi and Jaismine showed no jitters against their more illustrious opponents and were in complete control throughout the final.

Boxing Federation of India president Ajay Singh was understandably elated at the performance of the Indian boxers in Liverpool and said he was happy that the federation’s athlete-first policy was bringing the desired results.

Monza, Sep 7 (IANS) Red Bull driver Max Verstappen converted pole position into victory during Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix, leading home McLaren pair Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri after a dramatic start and end to proceedings at Monza.

Verstappen and Norris went wheel-to-wheel almost immediately when the lights went out, getting close to each other down the straight before the Red Bull driver skipped the first chicane to keep the lead over the McLaren driver.

While Verstappen gave up the position to Norris at the start of the second lap to avoid a potential penalty, the reigning four-time World Champion was soon back on his rival’s tail and took only a couple more tours to reclaim P1

While Verstappen’s run to the finish was relatively serene, amid repeated messages from the Red Bull pit wall to avoid any unnecessary risks, drama developed at McLaren when a slow pit stop for Norris allowed teammate Piastri through for second.

Given the unusual circumstances, McLaren asked Piastri to move aside for Norris, after which they would be free to race. It was an instruction the championship leader initially questioned, but ultimately obeyed, thanks to a well-orchestrated swap.

Piastri settled for third, meaning his points margin over Norris came down from 34 to 31, with Charles Leclerc a few seconds further back in the lead Ferrari – the Tifosi’s dreams of a home win, or even a podium, not materialising this year.

‘Inspiring moments in our history’, PM Modi shares Swami Vivekananda’s iconic Chicago speech

New Delhi, Sep 11 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday shared Swami Vivekananda’s Chicago speech, saying it is among the most celebrated and inspiring moments in our history.

On this day in 1893, Swami Vivekananda delivered a speech at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago, regarded as one of the most iconic and remarkable speeches, which described and presented India to the world.

Student Akshat Bundela called the portal “a very big global achievement".

He highlighted the use of AI in digitising manuscripts and said the initiative is a strong foundation towards building a developed India by 2047.

“This portal also empowers youth leadership, and the government’s effort to bring back manuscripts sent abroad is commendable,” he added.

Sharing the speech, PM Modi wrote on X, "This speech by Swami Vivekananda, delivered in Chicago on this day in 1893, is widely regarded as a watershed moment."

"Emphasising harmony and universal brotherhood, he passionately spoke about the ideals of Indian culture on the world stage. It is truly among the most celebrated and inspiring moments in our history," the post further reads.

Swami Vivekanand preached about religious tolerance and called for an end to fanaticism in his speech, which he started with the words hardly used in formal addresses in those times -"Sisters and Brothers of America".

This was reportedly met with a standing ovation that lasted more than two minutes and introduced

India and the Hindu faith to America.

During the speech, he made a passionate plea for religious tolerance and syncretism, which remain relevant even today. His opening para reads, "It fills my heart with joy unspeakable to rise in response to the warm and cordial welcome which you have given us. I thank you in the name of the most ancient order of monks in the world; I thank you in the name of the mother of religions; and I thank you in the name of the millions and millions of Hindu people of all classes and sects."

Swamiji introduced Hindu philosophy to the world, and he created an awe in the assembly. "I am proud to belong to a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true. I am proud to belong to a nation which has sheltered the persecuted and the refugees of all religions and all nations of the earth.”

In his speech, he described how Hindus were tolerant and gave shelter to the persecuted. “I am proud to tell you that we have gathered in our bosom the purest remnant of the Israelites, who came to southern India and took refuge with us in the very year in which their holy temple was shattered to pieces by Roman tyranny. I am proud to belong to the religion which has sheltered and is still fostering the remnant of the grand Zoroastrian nation.”

The speech also reflected the deep thoughts about tolerance in Hinduism.

Elon Musk’s Starlink experiences service outage again

According to outage-tracking website Downdetector, there were nearly 50,000 outage reports by 10:01 a.m.

"Starlink is currently experiencing a service outage. Our team is investigating," the company said on its website. However, it did not provide any reasons for the outage.

Downdetector reported that 59 per cent of users experienced internet issues, while 40 per cent faced a total blackout, with 1 per cent facing poor reception. The issue affected customers majorly across the US, including

Virginia, Louisiana, Indiana, and Washington state. Some users in Colombia also reported losing connectivity.

Some said the service was down for several minutes, and others noted outages lasting more than 20 minutes.

While Musk is yet to share a comment, users took to his social media platform X to complain of the outage.

“Starlink is down again. These outages are getting more frequent,” wrote a user.

“Another Starlink outage AGAIN…. Thought it was mine. Now I see everybody getting problems too,” added another user.

Meta hiring US-based contractors to build Hindi AI chatbots: Report

New Delhi, Sep 7 (IANS) Meta is reportedly hiring contractors in the United States at rates of up to $55 (around Rs 4,850) per hour to develop Hindi-language AI chatbots designed for Indian users.

These roles are part of Meta’s larger plan to expand its AI presence in fast-growing markets such as India, Indonesia, and Mexico, according to a Business Insider report.

Job listings reviewed by the publication suggest that contractors are being recruited

through staffing firms like Crystal Equation and Aquent Talent.

The work mainly focuses on creating characters for chatbots that will operate across Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp.

Applicants are required to be fluent in Hindi, Indonesian, Spanish, or Portuguese, and must have at least six years of experience in storytelling, character development, and familiarity with AI content workflows.

However, there is no official confirmation from Meta on the hiring move. Although, the report found that Crystal Equation has advertised Hindi and Indonesian language positions on behalf of Meta, while Aquent Talent listed Spanish-language roles for what

it described as a “top social media company.”

The decision to hire contractors for building localised chatbot characters highlights Meta’s effort to create digital companions that feel culturally relevant for Indian users.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg has earlier said that chatbots could “complement real-world friendships” and help people connect more easily with digital companions.

At the same time, Meta’s growing focus on AI chatbots has drawn criticism. Earlier reports suggest that some of Meta’s bots engaged in inappropriate romantic or sexual conversations with minors, gave misleading medical advice, and even produced racist responses.

AI, technology & innovation to drive India’s growth story: Piyush Goyal

New Delhi, Sep 10 (IANS)

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Wednesday that Artificial Intelligence, technology, and innovation will be the driving forces of India’s growth story.

Addressing the 58th convocation ceremony of the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) here, the minister congratulated the graduating class of 2025 and called upon them to harness their skills, agility, and vision to lead the country towards Viksit Bharat 2047.

Goyal underlined the role of technology and artificial intelligence in driving India’s growth story, pointing out the transformative potential of AI, robotics, machine learning, quantum computing, and innovation across key sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, and education. Coupled with India’s large pool of 2.3 million STEM graduates every year, he said, these advancements can reduce dependence on foreign technology and empower industries and services while uplifting those at

the bottom of the pyramid. Recounting his experience of running a skill development centre in Mumbai with the CII, the NSDC, Kyndryl, and IBM, the minister shared how students from modest backgrounds quickly adapted to new-age technologies such as cybersecurity, reflecting India’s innate ability to embrace knowledge and innovation. He emphasised that India’s youthful population — with an average age of 28.4 years — is its greatest strength in the journey from a $4 trillion economy to one worth $30–35 trillion.

Goyal cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of self-reliance in technology — from operating systems to cybersecurity and deep tech to artificial intelligence. He said India must secure primacy in technology globally and make the nation proud.

Highlighting the economic vision of the government under Prime Minister Modi, the Minister said it is rooted in building a developed nation — a Viksit Bharat — ensuring prosperity for every child born in the country. The focus, he said, is on resilience, sustainability, inclusiveness, and innovation-driven growth, with an aim to improve quality of life, bridge the rural-urban divide, reduce poverty, and promote ease of doing business and ease of living.

MP shocker: Rodents bite two newborn babies in ICU, one dies

Indore, Sept 2 (IANS) In a shocking incident, rodents bit two newborn babies inside the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ward of M. Y. Hospital in Madhya Pradesh, in which one newborn (baby girl) died, exposing the gross negligence at the governmentrun health system in the state. The deceased victim’s condition had already deteriorated, and she died on Tuesday, a senior doctor in M. Y. Hospital told IANS. However, hospital staff maintained that the baby's fragile health condition led to her death. The babies, born last week, were admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Maharaja Yashwantrao

Chikitsalaya (MYH), one of the biggest government hospitals in the state.

The incident came to light when the nursing team of the hospital saw the injured newborns and informed the hospital management. The administration then scanned CCTV cameras installed in the unit and found rats jumping in a swing near the newborns.

Following the shocking incident, a committee comprising six doctors has been set up to investigate the matter and submit its report within the next week, according to a statement issued by the Health and Family Department of the state government.

Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla, who also heads the state's Health Department, told IANS that an inquiry has been ordered into the matter.

Meanwhile, two nursesAkanksha Benzamin and Shweta Chouhan have been suspended with immediate effect.

Ironically, the Health Department

in its statement claimed that pest control at M. Y. Hospital is being conducted on a regular basis, once in 15 days.

It also denied allegations that pest control was last carried out in the hospital five years ago. However, contrary to the Health Department's claim, Dean of MGM (Mahatma Gandhi Memorial) Hospital, which is part of M. Y. hospital, Arvind Ghanghoria told media persons on Tuesday that a fine of Rs 1 lakh has been imposed on the pest control agency.

The incident has also sparked a political row as the opposition Congress has blamed the BJP government for neglecting healthcare in the state and has demanded a high-level inquiry into the matter.

"Even newborns are not safe in MP's biggest hospital. This incident shows the collapse of public health infrastructure under this government," said Congress MLA Umang Singhar, who is also the LoP in the state Assembly.

New Delhi, Sep 8 (IANS) While physiotherapy ensures better quality of life for individuals of all ages, Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Monday urged the need to promote the physical therapy regimen as an integral part of healthy ageing initiatives.

World Physiotherapy Day is observed every year on September 8 to recognise the significant and vital role physiotherapists play in healthcare.

Nadda emphasised the

It "highlights its importance in preventing falls and managing frailty among the elderly, supporting their journey towards active and dignified ageing," Nadda said.

Known mainly for the treatment of back pain, physiotherapy also plays a crucial role in the recovery of patients with stroke, sports injuries, post-surgical surgeries, chronic pain management, and the elderly with falls.

Meanwhile, the Minister also mentioned the initiatives launched by the government to enhance the health of elderly people in India.

"Government under the dynamic leadership of PM Narendra Modi ji has many schemes for the benefit of the elderly and ageing population available at Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and government hospitals," said Nadda, while urging senior citizens to avail the healthcare services.

Before diving into skin care tips, it's essential to understand the damaging effects of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can lead to many skin concerns, including sunburn and premature ageing. "One of the most effective ways to shield your skin from sun damage is sunscreen. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) rating to ensure comprehensive protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas of skin, including your face, neck, and ears, and remember to reapply every two hours, especially if you're swimming or sweating," says Mansi Sharma, founder of The Honest Tree by Boddess.

She says, "Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated and plump. Additionally, incorporate hydrating skincare products into your routine, such as lightweight moisturizers and serums formulated with hyaluronic acid or glycerin."

While sunscreen provides crucial protection, it's not the only line of defence against the sun's rays. "Consider covering up with lightweight, breathable clothing, hats, and sunglasses to provide additional protection for your skin and eyes. Opt for tightly woven fabrics and dark colours for optimal sun protection," adds Mansi. "When possible, seek shade during the sun's peak hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is when UV radiation is at its strongest, increasing the risk of sunburn and skin damage. Take breaks from direct sunlight by relaxing under a beach umbrella or finding shelter in a shaded area."

The founder of The Honest Tree by Boddess also suggests that while selecting skincare products for summer, opt for formulations that cater to the specific needs of sun-exposed skin. Mansi says, "Look for products enriched with antioxidants like vitamins C and E, which help neutralize free radicals generated by UV exposure. Incorporating a gentle exfoliant into your routine can

Bollywood actor Neil Nitin Mukesh, who is gearing up for his upcoming film ‘Ek Chatur Naar’, has shared if the pressure has kicked in for him with regards to the film’s title.

‘Ek Chatur Naar’ represents a very strong legacy as it resembles one of the iconic songs of Hindi cinema. The eponymous song belongs to the film ‘Padosan’, and has had a deep impact on the pop-culture of India.

throwback video was from the show, ‘Khullam Khulla – Live with Rishi Kapoor’, where Rishi Ji shared anecdotes from his professional life, along with industry stories.

The clip featured brother Randhir, son Ranbir, daughter Riddhima, sister Reema, filmmaker Ramesh Sippy, and veteran actor Jeetendra as the guests.

Neil spoke with IANS during the promotional campaign of the film in Mumbai, and he said he is not at all under any sort of pressure as the younger generation is not privy to the song.

When asked about the pressure, he told IANS, “Not at all. I think he (director Umesh Shukla) and I were having this discussion right now that a lot of the youngsters

He also spoke about the kind of humour he likes, as he said, “Situational, for sure.
