While four of the boys trapped inside a cave in northern Thailand have been brought out, the mission to rescue the remaining eight boys and their coach continues. The boys and their coach were exploring the cave on 23 June when they were cut off by water, four boys have been brought to safety above ground and are in good health. The rescued boys were escorted out by 13 foreign divers and five members of Thailand's elite navy SEAL unit. Eight boys and their coach are still to be rescued.

Elon Musk’s X-rocket company is testing a’ kid sized submarine” that could be sent to help the boys trapped in the flooded Thailand cave.

Authorities are racing against time to rescue the boys and the coach of the

soccer team, who have been stranded in the cave for more than two weeks now.

A team of 13 international cave diving experts and five Thai Navy SEALs are carrying out rescue operations.

Governor of Chiang Rai province, Narongsak Osottanakorn told that apart from the Thai divers, the rescuers were from other countries such as the United States, Europe, Australia and China.

With heavy rains forecasted for the entire week, Governor dismissed the idea of an immediate rescue, saying that efforts will be initiated only if the risk to the rescuers' lives were minimal.

The rescue operation is a treacherous attempt. To reach the cave, where the party is stranded, the divers must pass

through a series of dark, narrow and flooded tunnels that could take up to six hours to navigate. The entire round trip takes roughly 11 hours.

Thai authorities earlier said that it could take days for the divers to rescue all the boys and the football coach. Meanwhile, the medical teams will continue to monitor the health of the boys even as they remained trapped inside the cave.

Till we went into print around 8 o’clock on Tuesday morning the latest update was that eight boys out of twelve trapped in the cave have been rescued.

Authorities are waiting for rains to slow down as rising water level is too dangerous even for the most experienced Navy seals doing this rescue operation.

Government to spend $2.3b on planes,

to replace aging fleet

The government has announced its new fleet of aircraft to replace its aging Orion planes.The Defence Minister Ron Mark made the announcement of the $2.346 billion Boeing P8 Poseidon fleet at Parliament today. They will begin operations from 2023.

“The purchase ensures the Defence Force can continue to deliver the country’s maritime surveillance, resource protection, humanitarian and disaster response around New Zealand and across the South Pacific,” Mr Mark said.

“One example of the requirement for a fully capable maritime patrol aircraft is simply the number of lives that can be saved.”

Cabinet ministers were considering the decision this morning.

The Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft will be bought from the United States Government and replace the aging six P-3K2 Orion maritime patrol aircraft that have been operated by the Royal New Zealand Air Force since the 1960s.

RNZ last month revealed the Defence Force had spent around $360 million on maintenance and repairs of its Orion and Hercules aircraft over the past decade.

The Orion fleet will reach the end of their expected operational life in 2025.

“In the last seven years of search and rescue operations in our region, Orion maritime patrols have contributed to saving 119 lives,” Mr Mark said.

“Maintaining a maritime patrol capability is essential for New Zealand’s national security, and for our ability to contribute to global security efforts,” Mr Mark.

The squadron which operates the Orion fleet will shift from Whenuapai to Ohakea air force base to operate the new planes.

The government will also consider options for a more maritime surveillance, including smaller manned airplanes, during a defence review at the end of the year.

“This will free up the new P-8A fleet to fly more missions in the South Pacific and further afield,” Mr Mark said.

AM Show’s banning of Winston Peters backfires Having banned Winston Peters from the show for six weeks for allegedly being late to an interview AM Show host Duncan Garner got in huff when the acting prime minister failed to take him up on an offer to lift the ban earlier this week.

After banning the acting Prime Minister for failing to arrive in time for a 6.40am time slot last week, AM Show host Duncan Garner said the team had reflected on the

decision and back-tracked their punishment when it appeared the late arrival was due to a miscommunication.

“We heard from the PM’s office who wore the heat for what happened and we heard some of the audience feedback,” Garner said in a statement.

“So we’ve decided that yes, as Acting PM, we need to hear from Winston Peters and he’s invited back (on Tuesday). We hope he’ll make it.

“He’s talking to Australian voters, instead of coming and talking to New Zealanders this morning,” said O’Brien.

“He’s on Sky News Australia.

It’s about 4 or 5 o’clock in the morning there, so it’ll be a prerecord that they play later in the day. That’s his perogative.

If he needs a bit of time, if you guys need a bit of time apart Duncan, that’s fine, I’m happy to be here. I’m happy to help.”

Community A Cruise Trip down the Sparkling Waters of Auckland Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust organized a memorable Cruise vacation for 3 nights with over 100 senior citizens on “Pacific Jewel Food and Wine Cruise” from 15th to 18th June 2018.

It was an amazing experience with excellent hospitality by cruise staff, luxurious cabins, unlimited variety of delicious food, loads of onboard activities and the amazing performances by artists.

On special request the Captain of the ship permitted the group to start their morning with “Bollyworks” session by Fitness Trainer Ms. Ella Kumar and “Bollywood Dance” by the young and

very talented Instructor Ms. Simran Chadha. The peppy Bollywood songs not only made our group dance but also attracted the other guests to join the group and loosen up their muscles and feel fresh. We are also thankful to Sandeep Singh Ji from Indian Weekender for sparing his valuable time to live stream the event on Facebook.

The evening group dinner turned out to be enriching wherein the melodious numbers made everyone sway to the rhythm and brought them together on the dance floor. There was no limit to the fun element and all senior citizens had a memorable time enjoying, singing

and dancing. Post this fun and frolic, all members sat together for dinner at Waterfront Restaurant.

The clock kept ticking and time just cruised by with everyone wishing this would never end but all good things come to an end just like this wonderful trip. A special thanks to Saadia Juvale for organising the wonderful 3-night getaway on “Pacific Jewel Food and Wine Cruise” in the pristine waters of Auckland. Bhartiya Samaj achieved yet another milestone in its efforts to keep the community socially connected. This was appreciated by all members and they acknowledged Jeetji’s efforts in leading the pathway.

Over the last few weeks Police across Auckland have again been revisiting our dairy owners following the stabbing of a mother and son at their Grey Lynn Dairy in early June.

This incident has again heightened increased fear by dairy and liquor store owners throughout Auckland.

In response, Police have aimed to visit all dairies and liquor shops throughout Auckland to reassure them that we are dedicated to working alongside those most at risk and to ensure that everyone is getting the best advice and implementing appropriate security measures within their stores.

Ideally, we want to help dairy and liquor shop owners “target harden” their businesses, making them less enticing for criminals looking for easy opportunities.

Store layout and the location within an area can play a major role in how offenders choose to target these businesses, and it is therefore important that everyone does their best to address potential risks and take

appropriate measures to implement change.

Community New bus network for Central suburbs launches this weekend The biggest change to Auckland’s public transport network in history launched on Sunday 8 July with the Central new bus network, and Auckland Transport are urging customers to be ready.

“By simply taking 5 minutes now to re-plan your journey, you could avoid missing your bus after the eighth,” says Anthony Cross, Network Development Manager.

This can be done online with AT’s journey planner or the AT Mobile App.

“The New Network is simpler, more frequent, and designed to connect,” says Mr. Cross.

“Even though for some people the changes could be as minor as a new bus route number, for others it could mean a whole different way of reaching their destination – such as using a different bus stop, a different route, or transferring as part of their journey.”

“However, with buses coming more often 7 days a week, and with overall

significant improvements to the network, we hope the inconvenience of transferring will be off-set by increased access to more destinations than before, and in many cases, being able to just turn up and go.”

These significant changes to the central bus network will bring a variety of benefits, but it is expected to take a few days for the new services to settle in.

Customers are encouraged to allow ten minutes extra travel time during the first week and to take an earlier bus than usual, to allow for any unforeseen disruptions.

“We’ll be monitoring operations closely,” says Mr. Cross, “and addressing issues as soon as they arise. Please be kind to your driver as well as your fellow passengers, as changes of this scale can be stressful.”

Only three months after launching new bus networks for the other areas of Auckland, there was an increase in patronage: South Auckland had a 4%* increase, West 7%* and East 9%*.

Local Stories The New Zealand International Film Festival starts 19th July NZIFF - The New Zealand International Film Festival is a national event extending the cinematic options of audiences and filmmakers throughout New Zealand. The full programme for the 50th New Zealand

International Film Festival in Auckland is on sale now. There will be 155 feature length films from across 40 countries which will be screened from Thursday 19th July to Sunday 5th August.

The programme is presented in Auckland and Wellington. NZIFF opens in Auckland one weekend and gets underway in Wellington the next, overlapping for ten of their respective 17-day seasons. A smaller programme

then travels to twelve further centres.

The consolidation of several separately evolved Festivals into a single event known as The New Zealand International Film Festival occurred for the first time in 2009.

Auckland Film Festival Founded in 1969 as a component of the Auckland Festival, the Auckland International Film Festival in time became a fund-raising event subsidising live arts. Rescued from this role by the intervention of the New Zealand Federation of Film Societies in 1984, the Festival achieved an audience

Sriom Incorported celebrates Talent Nite, 2018 Sriom Incorported “Talent Nite 2018” just finished in a grand scale.

It’s very special as our Guru Sriom Adisakthiyendra Swamiji (whom we lovingly call Devima) was present for this event. This is an annual fund raising event which we have been doing for more than 10 years. This year event marks the 12 anniversary of the event.

Many prestigious schools and dance groups take part in this event. The best part of this show is its non judgmental.

We believe everyone has the ability and have talents in one form or other.

This event gives them a chance to showcase that talent. This year we had the youngest talent participated of age 3 and also one of our oldest participant is 75 years. The performance of Medha (one of Auckland’s budding youth talent) was stunning; encapsulating audience also the cherry on cake

We also had special needs kids performing on stage. For years we have always given chance to Autistic and special needs children to perform on stage which does heaps of good and confidence in them. We had some great performances from Mount Richmond School showcasing traditional NZ Haka and music followed by a special song from the music teacher Carlos Celis in Mexican language. This year we also had special dance garba from the Bharatiya Samaj Senior Citizen Group and Krishna Gopika dance from Gujarati Samaj which was mesmerizing. It was a satisfying day and not forgetting everyone enjoyed the delicious food!

Politics Increasing unrest and uncertainty Businesses are right to be worried about Labour’s plans to wind back the clock on industrial relations, strengthening the unions and pitting employers against employees.

These planned reforms will mean fewer jobs for New Zealanders and less competitive businesses – it’s no wonder businesses took out a full-page ad in the newspaper to voice their concerns and encourage others to do the same.

Escalating strike action will make it tougher to do business and harder for Kiwis to access the critical public services they need. Our economy will slow and that’s going to have an impact on New Zealanders’ quality of life.

All this will only worsen when Labour passes its changes to employment law.

Ending the starting out wage, removing 90-day trials for businesses with more than 20 staff, consecutive unsustainable leaps in the minimum wage, reducing flexibility, and 1970s-style standardised wages bargaining will all mean increased risks and costs for small and medium-sized businesses.

UK Brexit secretary David Davis resigns

Bhutan Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay met President Ram Nath Kovind here on Friday.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tobgay held delegation-level talks at the Hyderabad House.

Tobgay, who arrived on a three-day visit to India on Thursday, met External Affairs Minister (EAM) Sushma Swaraj.

The United Kingdom’s Brexit Secretary David Davis resigned from his post on Sunday.

In recognition of her relentless efforts to make her village open defecationfree, a 87-year-old woman who built her own toilet was honoured on Sunday.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar was seen indulging in a heated argument with a journalist earlier in the day.

Speaking to media here, a scoffed Khattar told a journalist to learn etiquettes, and added that the role of media was to ask questions, and not level allegations.

The remark came after the journalist questioned Khattar on the delays in the redressal of grievances received on the ‘CM window’, the public grievance portal for citizens of Haryana to register grievances.

“Journalists are just a medium.

Your job is to ask questions, not levy allegations. Learn etiquettes first. I am answerable to the citizens, not to you,” Khattar said.

Rakkhi, a resident of Badali village of Udhampur, who is an inspiration to many, was awarded a cheque of Rs 12000 by the Deputy Commissioner Udhampur for her endeavour towards ‘Swachh Bharat’.

She was doing the masonry work herself as she did not have money to hire labours.

While speaking to ANI, Rakkhi disclosed that she had been defecating in the open for decades without knowing its ill effects.

“I want everyone to use the toilet as defecating in open gives birth to many kinds of diseases. I am poor and

don’t have money to build a toilet. Hence, I decided to build the toilet with my own hands without any construction tool or help.

My son made the mud for my toilet after which I levelled the bricks and did the masonry work myself.

Within seven days my toilet will be completed,” she added.

Army Chief visits Golden Temple

Army chief General Bipin Rawat visited Golden Temple in Amritsar on Sunday to seek blessings and talk about the security of the temple.

During his visit, General Rawat spoke to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief about literature and other invaluable articles which were taken away by the Army during

Talking about Rawat’s visit, the SGPC president, GS Longowal said, “We discussed some literature from our library with him. He has also assured us to see if the books are still with the Army and if they will be returned to us.”

Triple Talaq petitioner Shayara Bano may soon join BJP The Triple Talaq crusader Shayara Bano on Sunday announced that she is willing to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) if given an opportunity in future.

Speaking to reporters, Bano applauded the BJP for making efforts in order to bring reforms in the existing Muslim Personal Laws.

“Our government is concerned about the Uniform Civil Code and the effects of polygamy. Looking at the efforts of the BJP government towards the Muslims, I have decided that if I get an opportunity to join the BJP I will definitely do so,” she said.

Bano was one of the petitioners who had filed a plea in the apex court to put

a ban on triple talaq, citing the practice as unfair and discriminatory for Muslim women residing in India.

The Supreme Court has set aside instant triple talaq or talaq-e-biddat as a “manifestly arbitrary” practice.

Earlier, Bano emphasised that other practices such as polygamy and nikah halala should also be abolished in the country. “The way in which women are tortured in the name of these illpractices should be stopped,” she added.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017, which makes triple talaq a punishable offence, follows the apex court judgment on August 22 last year in Shayara Bano vs.

Fulfilling potential relationships and leveraging opportunities between New Zealand and Indian markets was the key theme of the recent “Reimagining

India New Zealand Relationship” nationwide series of

talks.In Wellington on Wednesday, 26 June, Hon David Parker MP - AttorneyGeneral, Minister for Economic Development, and Minister for Trade and Export Growth, addressed an audience of business people, exporters, senior economic advisors, academia, and senior representatives from MFAT, NZTE and MPI. The event, titled “Building Strong Economic Relations”, was hosted by the New Zealand India Trade Alliance in partnership with Grant Thornton, and supported by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise.

Min. Parker said last year’s meeting between Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the East Asia Summit, further enhanced the already existing warm relations between the two countries.

The Minister highlighted the rise of India as a consumer market, and its willingness to reach out to the world;

“Strong relationships with India matter for New Zealand’s security and prosperity. India is the World’s largest democracy.

It will be the 5th largest economy by 2020 and the most populous country by 2025.”

The Minister acknowledged that the potential to develop an even stronger trade relationship between the two countries is huge; “We want to

strengthen our economic and trade architecture with India, including through the conclusion of a Free Trade Agreement.

“At present the best prospect for securing trade liberalization into India remains the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, the RCEP negotiations. Negotiations for a bi-lateral FTA are a potential parallel track, but progress depends upon what India is prepared to bring to the table, particularly on goods.”

He said that liberal trade rules are critical for both countries, and while there is some growth in trade between the two countries there was;

“Unfulfilled potential in the economic relationship, particularly in the bilateral goods trade. New Zealand wants India to open up its protected goods market, to remove barriers which impede NZ service exporters, and to improve conditions for NZ businesses to invest in India.”

Min. Parker stressed that the lack of a Free Trade Agreement need not be a barrier for New Zealand companies, with over 100 NZ companies now working in India. He said New Zealand must leverage every opportunity that is present, and commended agencies like NZTE, MFAT and NZITA on the role they play in enhancing the relationship.

The meeting was also addressed by Rachel Lynch, Head of Government Relations, Zespri, who spoke about the Zespri’s growth journey in India. She described the growing demand from Indian consumers to eat healthy food,

Business Japan, world’s third largest economy, ratifies CPTPP

Minister for Trade and Export Growth David Parker has welcomed Japan’s early ratification of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

“The CPTPP will create a new FTA relationship for New Zealand with Japan, which is our fifth-largest trading partner and an important source of overseas investment.”

Japan has notified New Zealand, as Depositary for the CPTPP, that it had completed its domestic procedures to ratify the Agreement.

Two-way goods and services trade with Japan totalled $8.2 billion last year.

“It’s pleasing to see the world’s third-largest economy demonstrating leadership and support for open markets and global trade rules by its formal endorsement,” David Parker said.

“Tariffs would be eliminated over time on most exports to Japan, and there will be significant cuts to tariffs on beef and access would be improved for a number of dairy products.

“Our exporters can look forward to no longer being disadvantaged in this high-value market compared with competitors such as Australia

and Chile, which already have trade agreements in force with Japan, and the European Union, which will have one shortly.”

• ¼ cup canola oil • 1 onion pureed to a fine consistency • 2 tbsp crushed fresh garlic • 2 tbsp crushed fresh ginger • 500g lean lamb leg, cut into 3cm x 3cm cubes • 1 tsp turmeric • 1 ½ tsp garam masala

• 1 tsp salt • 1 tsp paprika • 3 medium tomatoes, diced • ½ cup tomato puree • ½ cup chopped fresh coriander • 1 cup cold water Salt and red chili powder to taste Chopped fresh coriander to garnish

SEND YOUR ANSWER TO: Heat oil in a large pan on a low heat. Add pureed onions, stirring continuously so it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan. Cook until almost brown.

Add garlic and ginger and cook until softened and browned.

Add cubed lamb and cook until just browned. Add the turmeric, garam masala, salt and paprika and continue cooking until you start to smell the spice aromas.

Stir though tomato and keep cooking until you start to see the oil separating form the onion and spice mixture. Be sure to take your time with this and keep stirring so that it does not stick to the bottom of the pan.

Government tries building

momentum through Kiwi Build Minister of Housing and Urban Development Phil Twyford, announced the much-anticipated eligibility criteria for Kiwi Build houses on 4th July, citing some important points, the most important being the income threshold of $120,000 for the sole purchaser and $180,000 for a couple. Apart from being a first home buyer or even a second chancer the person/persons have to be a permanent resident or citizen, he or she must be intending to live in that house for at least three years. It seems like a perfect start for the Labour-led government in their pursuit to achieve their target of 100,000 affordable homes.

Mr. Twyford also announced that his announcement starts the Kiwi Build home programme officially. The government aims to make 1000 home under Kiwi Build in the first year and to reach 5000 homes by the year 2020 to reach their target of 100,000 Kiwi Build homes. The Minister also admitted that people below these incomes are still struggling to buy a house in high demand areas like Auckland and Queenstown. Contrary to governments price tag of $500,000 to $650,000 for one to four-bed room houses, this house in Special Housing Area in Queenstown has been sold for $890,000 last week only, so we have to wait and watch as how good will be the control of the Minister or his department to check this inflation.

When Queenstown Mayor was asked about this house sale, he showed his ignorance about this price tag and shrugged off by saying the government can only provide or build homes in these areas, but the purchasers can still sell it in open market to a higher bidder.

The Opposition is still very critical and quite sceptical about government’s ambitious target of 100,000 houses in 10 years’ time, citing the amount of time it may take in getting consents from the respective councils and then creating the infrastructure in the new SHAs. Off the 100,000 targeted houses 50,000 are to be built in Auckland alone. Government plans to transform the building and housing sector, and drive innovation to develop new ways to build quality, affordable homes.

As, we have seen in the last decade the demand for housing in New Zealand has out stripped supply. Prices were increasing, and homeownership rates were falling. There is a huge unmet need for affordable homes for the first-time home buyers which the market has not been delivering. There is also a need to encourage innovation and productivity in the sector. The good news for the government is that over 15,000 people have had already registered themselves for the Kiwi Build homes and the work is in full swing in the most demand areas in Auckland already. Government initiatives are bringing together industry leaders from across the building, planning, property, manufacturing, and development sector to discuss Kiwi Build.

The main areas which are seeing the action in Auckland are Mt Albert-Unitech Campus where 29.6-hectare land has been acquired to build thousands of houses and another 400 getting built in Northcote suburb with which the Minister announced to kick off the Kiwi Build homes programme.

The question remains about the special housing area process and its outcomes for everyday New Zealanders, but the Government is not willing to provide them.

Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s undercurrent of all His teachings is the principle of Love. He consistently called upon all humanity to “Love All, Serve All” and repeatedly asserted that the essence of all scriptures is “Help Ever, Hurt Never”.

His adoration is best done by means of love. Cultivate that attitude of oneness between men of all creeds and all countries. That is the message of love I bring. That is the message I wish you to take to heart.”

He further added, “Love is God, God is Love. Where there is love, God is certainly evident there. Love more and more people; love them more and more intensely; transform the love into service; transform the service into worship… that is the highest sadhana (spiritual practice)” Man’s intrinsic nature is Divine Love; the purpose of his life is to realise this inherent Divinity. This can happen by leading a moral life, by rendering selfless service to needy, by engaging in devotional practices, by developing love, respect and compassion for all life. As one strives to transform his worldly life of self-centred desires and attachments into a higher spiritual life of selflessness and devotion, the foundation is built for receiving God’s Grace. It is this Grace which will reveal our true nature to each of us.

Sri Sathya Sai Baba emphasised, “All religions are the expressions of these same universal principles. The world

is your school. The Five Human Values (Truth, Right Conduct, Peace, Love, and Nonviolence) are your curriculum, and the realization of the unity of Godliness in the diversity of Creation is your ultimate lesson”.

He defined his mission, “I have come, not to disturb or destroy any faith, but to confirm each one in his own faith.

So that, a Christian becomes a better Christian, a Muslim a better Muslim and a Hindu a better Hindu”. He unified all of humanity by propagating the Unity Faiths. He had united the faiths through the replacement of Religion by Spirituality, Rituals by Service and Scriptures by Education in Human Values/Educare His numerous service projects stand testimony to His Selfless Love and compassion for the needy & less privileged, be it free hospitals, free education institutions, free drinking water supply projects or free housing projects. True to His declaration, “My Life Is My Message”, He inspired millions of devotees worldwide by His example to live the ideal that “Service to Man Is Service to God.” He strongly emphasized selfless service to needy as the highest means for enhancing one’s own spiritual growth. He further added that it is not enough to simply do good works, but of equal importance is one’s attitude during the service activity. The service worker must have an attitude of humility and appreciation for the opportunity to do any service. One should not dwell on the good that he is doing, otherwise it would strengthen one’s ego rather than help to reduce it.

Spirituality THE YOGIC DOOMSDAY There are always debates about how the world will end; will it be a flood or fire or a bomb or just Indian politics?

In the yogic lore, they say the human body has already reached the last point of evolution. Shiva, the Adiyogi, very casually said,

“The evolutionary process of the human body is over, unless some significant changes happen in the solar system.”

It is uncanny that today’s neuroscientists are saying there is no way a human being can get any more brainy than the way he is right now.

He can only get to use his brain better, but he cannot grow it further. If you increase the number of neurons, the communication between them will not be coherent. If you increase the size of the neurons, it will not be sustainable because the brain is a very high energyconsuming part of the body. The amount of wiring that would go into it would consume too much energy.

The only way a human being can get more intelligent is by creating more coherence. If that is achieved, one will seem to be more intelligent, but actually it is only better utilization; no enhancement of brain has really happened. About three years ago, IIT Delhi made a survey of people who have been practicing Shambhavi Mahamudra for over three months and they said,

“The coherence between the right and the left brain is phenomenally improved in three months of practice.”

We calculate that in approximately 28,000 years, the impact of the moon on the human system will be considerably reduced, where slowly, the human woman will lose the physiological cycles and the ability to reproduce. The human race will quietly peter out. This doomsday is for humans only. Don’t you think you are the end of the world.

This body is just a product that has been crafted out of the solar potter’s wheel, and your body has to be in sync with the solar system to function at its optimum. Every practice that is taught in yoga always takes into consideration the cycles of the sun and moon and variations that occur because it is in collaboration with the sun, the moon and the planet, that this body is created.

The Man with the

Midas Touch To even get in the same space as a brand like Sameer Handa, requires exhaustive preparation.

Born in India, having completed Mechanical Engineering, Sameer Handa left India at the age of 24 to work in the Middle East. But soon the monotony of his life as an engineer forced him to rethink and charter a new plan.

Sameer had somewhere started harbouring a hope to launch a “nice little business” and hitting the University life in Australia to complete his MBA degree gave him the wings to a whole new direction.

It was in Australia that he met the love of his life, his Mexican wife who was studying law at the same campus. Soon they were married, he had a great new job and had the longest honeymoon in Fiji where he worked as an expat for three years after which he decided to move to New Zealand.

Sameer had worked for some large, multi-national refrigeration companies before - but starting at Patton refrigeration in 1995 in New Zealand, he got four promotions in four years starting from an Engineering Sales Manager in the first year to the CEO of the company in the fourth year. Whatever he touched turned to gold.

Sameer says, “Last year before I finished, we were doing a 150 million turnover and 7 to 10 million profits”. A phenomenal success story indeed.

What he did build along was a reputation, not only for himself but also for the small Kiwi company that was soon to become an international giant under the expert guidance of this industry stalwart. He was quickly drumming up clients for his fledgling refrigeration company.

The company was into designing, engineering, and servicing industrial refrigeration equipment for large and medium-sized businesses, and gradually became one of the largest industrial providers in its sector in New Zealand. They were dealing in air conditioning too, which helped future-proof the company and ensured they remain one step ahead of the competition.

Profits were pouring in, and the stakes were growing bigger by leaps and bounds.

Soon an international Swedish company, listed on the Stockholm exchange, bought the company. It gave the international company an entry into Asia straight away with all four important markets – Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and India.

Very quickly he was assigned

the task of acquiring their competitor also. In his last role Sameer was the MD for Beijer Ref Australasia.

In that role, Sameer’s responsibilities included managing six businesses in four countries; Patton & Realcold businesses in NZ, Patton Refrigeration in India, Patton Aero in Thailand and merger of Patton Australia and Realcold Australia into Beijer Ref Australia. This included 40 trade outlets, 6 factories and 300 staff in 4 countries.

“I was starting to get tired of traveling in my 22 years with the refrigeration business.

I was thinking of retiring and playing some golf and continue to enjoy what this country offers best – a complete work-life balance. I plan to spend more and more time with my wife and my children and travel with them on family-oriented holiday destinations”.

When asked about his success mantra, he says, he quoted the following 3P’s:

“I have now started to invest in a few new businesses, which is why I recently bought this well-established lighting business. This time I have a full team to run the business as it is a 20 years old company. But my role is to mostly delegate work and macro manage the business. I maintain the key relationships and work with the team regarding strategy and handle the growth aspect of the business”.

He says, “In the New Zealand market - where the country’s biggest players lurk – a startup is just a matter of showing up with a plan and a smile. It is relatively easy to do business in NZ. That is because of the ease of starting new businesses.

There are no forms for filling, no bureaucrats, and it is a small market, thereby making it easy to grow. But there

are not too many venture capitalists or private investors once you grow big. That is the time you have to start by thinking of going overseas”.

Being at the top, the humility developed in the early days is quite easily visible. Maybe it is this charm, and down to earth persona, which is the reason why the staff from his old company have followed him, and the new ones won’t leave.

“There’s a difference, I’ve noticed, operating out of New Zealand. Trusting and hiring new people in their first stint and perhaps a handshake means a lot. There was a time when someone trusted me and gave me my big break. I keep saying this country has been kind and generous to my family and me. I have been doing the

same on my journey always giving newcomers a chance, not saying no to talent just because they are newcomers”.

“We try to keep giving back as much as we can. I feel we can contribute more to helping others through my role in the business community. People gave me opportunities and trusted me when I was new in this country, the same loyalty, honesty, and integrity in running a business ought to be there even in the next generation.

Asked about his plans, Sameer divulges his wish to buy a few more businesses. He also

intends to be involved with more businesses as a guide, be on the board of directors and continue to provide mentorship to new and talented individuals.

Sameer is an executive member of INZBC - India New Zealand Business Council, which promotes trade between India and New Zealand and companies like Fonterra, Air New Zealand, etc. are its members.

Jon Favreau’s adaptation of the Disney Animated Film ‘The Lion King’ will feature Donald Glover and Beyonce in the lead roles for the voice cast.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Earl Jones, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Billy Eichner, Seth Rogen, Alfre Woodard and John Oliver are the part of the cast ensemble.

The movie was announced in September, 2016. Disney took to Twitter to reveal the cast of the movie. The caption read, “#TheLionKing. 2019”

Speaking on the proposal, a source said, “Justin made arrangements for the ring when they were in NYC and knew that he wanted to propose to her. It was a sudden decision, but Justin always knew Hailey and him had a special bond that was incomparable.”

Hollywood filmmaker Shyamalan released the first teaser poster of his upcoming film ‘Glass’, which is a sequel to his previous movies ‘Unbreakable’ and ‘Split’.

According to Entertainment Weekly, those attending ComicCon will get to witness the first trailer of Shyamalan’s ‘Glass’.

He tweeted that he is excited that people attending ComicCon will get to see the trailer and also the actors working in the film.

British singer Ed Sheeran is being sued for $100 million for allegedly ripping off a Marvin Gaye song.

According to TMZ, the lawsuit claimed that the Ed Sheeran’s song, ‘Thinking Out Loud’ is a plagiarised version of Marvin Gaye’s ‘Let’s Get it on’.

The lawsuit was filed by a company named Structured Asset Sales.

The lawsuit further said that Sheeran’s song has the same melody, rhythms and every musical technicality used in Gaye’s song.

In 2016, Sheeran’s song was a hit. It was also nominated for Grammy for Best Record, Best Performance and Song of the Year.

Gaye’s song, which was written by a guy named Edward Townsend in 1973, died in 2003, after which Structured Asset Sales bought part of the copyright, which is worth $100 million.

Along with Structured Asset Sales, Townsend’s heirs have filed a lawsuit against Ed Sheeran.

The actor duo earlier starred together in Prakash Jha’s political drama ‘Raajneeti’ in 2010.

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the film is based on the life of actor Sanjay Dutt and also stars Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Vicky Kaushal and Paresh Rawal.

The trailer of the film showcased a good-hearted mid-life crisis drama.

On the other hand, Ajay Devgn, who was last seen in ‘Raid’, has currently produced wife Kajol’s movie, ‘Helicopter Eela’. The actor will also be seen in ‘Total Dhamaal’ along with Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Riteish Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi, Jaaved Jaaferi, Sanjay Mishra and Pitobash.

The plot of the movie is based on the life of a woman, portrayed by Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald), a Christian woman living an ordinary and simple life with her husband and children.

However, the story takes a turn post her birthday when she encounters a rather unusual present.

American singer Justin Bieber got a special delivery of a Lamborghini Aventador.

It is a custom-made Lamborghini Aventador with a jaw-dropping price tag of over $500,000.

According to TMZ, Bieber’s red Aventador was dropped at Montage resort in Laguna Beach in California, where he is currently putting up at.

Bieber who is known to splurge money on everything luxury, owns another blue Lamborghini Aventador which made it to the headlines a few weeks back; since he got stuck while driving it out of a tight parking spot.

The car according to TMZ arrived on Friday on a flatbed truck.

England continued their rich vein of form in this year’s FIFA World Cup by brushing aside Sweden 2-0 to progress to their first semi-finals after 28 years at the Samara Arena here on Saturday.
