The Government Communications Security Bureau's (GCSB) decision to recommend against using Huawei equipment for the 5G rollout because of national security concerns underscores the strategic role commercial telecommunications plays in

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern named

as one of the most powerful women in the world In Forbes' power of the 100 most powerful women, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has ranked just six places behind Queen Elizabeth II. The magazine, which regularly issues lists and rankings of sportspeople, politicians, the powerful and the wealthy, ranked Ms Ardern at number 29 and cited "the new norms" she set as a government leader "when she gave birth, took six weeks maternity leave and shared that her partner will be a stay-athome dad".

The magazine's list went on to cite a host of reasons for placing her so high on the list, just six places behind Queen Elizabeth II and 21 places above singer Beyoncé.

It said she had used her platform to "create a path for other women" to follow in her footsteps and, at age 38, was the youngest female leader in the world and New Zealand's youngest PM in 150 years.

Forbes also singled out the fact she "promises an 'empathetic' government, with ambitious plans to tackle climate change and child poverty".

Hindu Community Leaders Meet held at Balmoral Community centre Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh New Zealand chapter organised a community leader meet at Balmoral community centre in Sandringham on Sunday 2 December.

Many community leaders were present at the meet including the Honorary Counsel of India to New Zealand Bhav Dhillon, Dr Ajit Swarn Singh and Hemant Prasher of Bharatiya Mandir.

Two main speakers of the meet came from overseas, which included Mr Man Mohan Vaidya who is the Joint General Secretary of Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh, New Delhi from India and other being Mr Saumitra Gokhale, who is the Global Co Ordinator, Hindu Swayam Sewak Sangh and now based in USA. Both the speakers come from a very chequered and illustrious background and are learned scholars. Both speakers stressed on the unity of Hindu community

His learning of Hindu belief to think, pray and do good, for all the living being on the

planet has made him what he is today. The attendees listened to his address with rapt attention. More than a hundred people

participated in the meet which concluded with a sumptuous lunch served by the organisers.

Gandhi Nivas celebrates its 4-year anniversary • Erum Ali Gandhi Nivas celebrated its 4-year anniversary on Friday 30th November 2018. Gandhi Nivas under the expert guidance of Ranjna Patel has gone from strength to strength since the day it was founded, four years ago. It is New Zealand's first service offering 24-hour counselling and preventive help to men and the families effected by domestic violence and also accommodation to the men removed from their homes for committing family violence.

Gandhi Nivas has made a huge change by using the formula of ‘Prevention is better than cure’, as founder Ranjna Patel puts it.

While some initially wondered why Gandhi Nivas was focusing on the perpetrators of family violence, Ranjna says it is critical to work with these men to bring about change. "The early intervention is the key. From the moment the woman makes the call, it is important that a counsellor sees them to help them understand their problems and how they can be provided with the right kind of help."

"Police statistics tell us only 12 per

cent of women actually make the call for help," she said. But the thing that can be called the real success is that probably more than 100 men have been saved from reoffending and they have done it themselves," she said.

Gandhi Nivas offers them a place to cool down and get help to change their behaviours, from trained counsellors and social workers, before going back to their families.

"We are giving them tools to understand the trigger points and help to not repeat what has happened in the past," she said.

Yet the service doesn't just work with men - it also works with their families.

One of its strengths is that it offers counselling to wives and children too.

And results of this successful

organisation’s work have been measured by Massey Staff, showing a substantial reduction in the number of men offending after intervention.

Research by Massey University's School of Psychology has found that only seven have committed family violence offences since. "The average number of offences each man committed has also gone down but we cannot stop here. We still

have a long way to go and what we have is 'Hope'," Patel said.

She thanked each and every one present for the commendable amount of energy, manpower and resources that it takes to keep Gandhi Nivas going and to the silent heroes who have relentlessly been working behind the scenes to make the difference.

Drug Smuggler likely to be Inland Revenue walks the allowed to stay in New Zealand talk on payday filing

Karel Sroubek will likely be allowed to stay in New Zealand if a judicial review is allowed to go ahead, says National MP Judith Collins.

Sroubek, a convicted drug smuggler who arrived in New Zealand on a false passport, was initially told by Immigration Minister Iain Lees-Galloway he could stay in New Zealand following his prison sentence.

But Mr Lees-Galloway reversed his decision on Wednesday after weeks of media and political pressure, citing convictions he says he wasn't aware of when he initially granted residency.

The case summary however revealed Mr Lees-Galloway had been told about Sroubek's convictions back in the Czech Republic.

"I think there's a double jeopardy issue here," Sroubek's former lawyer Simon Laurent told RNZ. "Resurrecting something which no doubt was before the minister already does give a ground for review and that would be for a court to decide."

Karel Sroubek begs for 'one more chance' to stay in New Zealand Ms Collins told The AM Show on Friday it's because Mr Lees-Galloway didn't take time to read the entire case file.

"If you don't read the file, you can't say it's not in it."

She says Mr Lees-Galloway is in "deep trouble" if a judicial review is granted.

"Speaking as a lawyer, I would think he'd have a very good case [to stay]."

People offer prayers, Gurdwaras offer langars • Erum Ali Hundreds of devotees thronged gurdwaras across New Zealand in Auckland, Hamilton, Hastings and Tauranga to offer prayers on the occasion of Gurpurab - the birth anniversary of the first Sikh guru, Nanak Dev.

Secretary NZPP, greeted people on the occasion of 'Gurpurab' and urged them to follow the Guru's teachings and maintain peace and harmony.

Sardar Jaswinder Singh from Hastings Gurudwara said this year hundreds of people, from various faiths, reached the Gurdwara in Hastings in the early hours of morning. The gurdwara saw great religious fervour to the fore on Gurpurab, to offer prayers marking the birth anniversary of the founder of Sikhism.

The shrine complexes were decorated with lighting. Hymns were rendered at the holy shrines and hundreds of other gurdwaras across the world to mark the occasion.

Inland Revenue Chief People Officer Mark Daldorf says the developer of the payroll software package the organisation uses has been helpful with resolving obstacles.

More than two months of pay runs with payday filing have been successfully completed at Inland Revenue. This means all the PAYE and deduction information about its employees has been filed at each fortnightly payday instead of monthly.

Receiving this type of information on a timelier basis will allow Inland Revenue to be more accurate when calculating taxes and social entitlements such as Working for Families tax credits. It’s also a key part of the proposed plan to simplify end-ofyear taxes for individuals.

“One of the benefits of Inland Revenue switching early,” says Mr Owen, “is that it has taught us some valuable lessons we can share with other significant employers.

“We’re intimately aware of the planning

“Like any new process, it takes some getting used to, especially how the employment information is displayed in myIR but we’ve been able to quickly adapt to the new look and feel.”

“We’ve shown that it’s possible to shift to payday filing well ahead of the deadline so other large employers should feel confident they can do the same. “The first step is to start talking with your payroll software provider and work out a plan to get you ready well in advance.”

The Indian News organises Panel discussion on Rental Law changes • Yugal Parashar The Indian News has taken an initiative to organise an open panel discussion on the proposed Rental Law changes on Sunday 9th December at Balmoral Community Centre.

Mike Butler, of STOP the War against Tenancies, is the man behind this movement to stop the proposed law changes as he believes the said changes are being brought without any public consultation.

These proposed changes are designed only to harm the property investors and developers. In a fair society a government cannot function this way and there has to a be balanced approach while making such decisions that does not hurt the interest of one party at the cost of other. Also, the new regulations being brought by the government for the owners or the landlords about their rental properties like mandatory insulation of the rental properties by July 2019, failing to that attracts a $4,000 fine, are very harsh and one sided. If

the proposed changes are implemented by the government this will cost any property owner up to $7,000 each property, to meet all the new requirements in the proposed changes.

Where will the money come from, to make all these changes?

Proposed changes to the tenancy law will prevent property investors from ending the tenancies, ban fixed term tenancies, allow tenants to modify your property, will allow them to keep pets in the house against your wishes and will make ways for a government official to enter your property any time without your permission on the pretext of checking if the required changes are been complied.

Government’s reason to ask the property owners to make those necessary change on ‘health grounds’ is quite weird as if this is the case then these changes

should be made mandatory for the owner-occupied house as well which are more than a million in numbers.

The Indian News has decided to support this matter of great social importance, as everyone is going to be affected with these changes irrespective of their race or ethnic background. Any one, who is trying to make their lives better by working hard and putting their hardearned money in some investment property is going to be affected with

these one-sided proposed changes. If the said change is being made purely on the ‘health ground’ then government should be equally concerned for the owneroccupied houses and their owners and should subsidise the insulation and heating installations across the board.

No new taxes

This week Simon Bridges made a pledge to New Zealanders. If National wins the right to govern in 2020 there will be no new taxes in our first term.

Nobody is doubting the Government’s good intentions, but these good intentions have consequences that are actually doing more harm than good.

New Zealanders deserve to have certainty when it comes to managing family budgets, and the way the Government has managed its budget for the past year has had a huge impact on New Zealand families.

The current Government is prioritising good intentions over good outcomes.

Under the Labour-led government rents have gone up two and a half times faster than under National.

They’re up $30 a week, or $1560 a year.

Petrol taxes have been piled on. The typical car now costs $15 more to fill up than this time last year. That all adds up and families are feeling it.

Higher petrol prices mean groceries become more expensive too. Heading into the summer break we want families to be able to fill up the tank, go on a road trip and pack everything they need for a BBQ without worrying about the price tag. But that’s just a bit harder now.

The oil and gas ban may have sounded good, its aim was to reduce emissions.

That’s a good intention. But we now know that not only will it not do that, it will actually increase global emissions.

On top of that it will result in less energy security, higher electricity prices, fewer jobs and lower incomes for New Zealanders. We will have to import coal and gas from overseas instead of producing it ourselves, that is madness. Good intentions but a very bad outcome.

This Government cares a lot about rhetoric. We care about results.

Labour said it wouldn’t add any new taxes in its first term. Then we saw a regional fuel tax in Auckland, three national petrol tax increases, an extension of the bright line test, ring fencing of losses and the Amazon tax.

All the changes the Government is making to the rental market are supposed to make it better for renters.

But, unfortunately, the opposite is happening. Good intentions, bad outcomes.

This Government claims to be kind, but these policies are hurting Kiwi families and heading into Christmas, that’s just not fair.

When we say no new taxes, we actually mean it.

We’ve also committed to repealing a Capital Gains Tax. Michael Cullen’s Tax Working Group has announced it is putting together two options for a Capital Gains Tax. But it admits that this won’t fix the housing market but will lead to higher rents for those who can least afford it.

Jacinda Ardern has announced this week, that the long-standing problems with buildings and infrastructure at Middlemore Hospital and the Manukau SuperClinic will be fixed following an $80 million investment. The government is addressing the issues with this significant investment which will make a real difference to patients and their families and to staff working at the frontline.

The Prime Minister says that improving access to high quality health services provided in world-class facilities is a priority for the Coalition Government.

She strongly believes that the people and staff of Counties Manukau District Health Board deserve quality facilities that are in a good state of repair.

The Coalition government believes that improving the state of our hospitals is a priority. In our first Budget $750 million of new funding was set aside for capital works and with the current $80 million investment we have allocated well over $600 million of that to key projects.

The problems with leaky buildings, including rot and mould in the walls,

and earthquake prone facilities of Middlemore are all symptoms of years of neglect and underinvestment.

Health Minister David Clark states that the current announcement was a welcome step in what would be an ongoing process of renewing Middlemore and other DHB facilities.

This funding means Counties Manukau DHB can plan with certainty and develop business cases for the following four important projects: Re-cladding the Kidz First Building, as part of an ongoing phased approach to re-cladding clinical buildings at CMDHB • Relocating the radiology department from the aging Galbraith building to the Harley Gray building • Establishing a radiology hub at the Manukau SuperClinic site (currently patients have to be transferred to Middlemore for CT and MRI services) • Critical infrastructure work at the Manukau SuperClinic including new plant room/substations, IT, medical gases and parking – all needed to support expansion of clinical services

in the short to medium term. “These projects will significantly improve the standard of key facilities. They will also help Counties Manukau DHB better handle a growing population with some of the most challenging health needs in New Zealand.

• $24m for new endoscopy and cardiac care capacity at Northland DHB’s Whangarei Hospital Our coalition government has different priorities to the last government. We believe that investment in housing, health, and education for all of the people is more important than tax cuts which disproportionately benefit a few.

After nine years of neglect there is much work to be done, but as our investment in Middlemore hospital shows, the work is underway.

Upgrading and repairing hospital facilities is no small task. It requires careful planning to minimise disruption to patients and staff while maintaining services throughout. In the end, though, this is about delivering the quality facilities and services that people need and deserve. This Government is definitely committed to that task.

AgustaWestland deal 'middleman' Christian Michel arrives in New Delhi Christian Michel, the alleged middleman in the Rs 3600 crore AgustaWestland helicopter deal, arrived in New Delhi in the wee hours of Wednesday after being extradited to India from Dubai.

Michel, who is presently at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) headquarters, is likely to be produced before a competent court on Wednesday.

Furthermore, the CBI is likely to ask the court for extended custody of Michel for the purpose of investigation.

On Tuesday, the CBI had issued a statement saying: "Wanted fugitive criminal Christian Michel James who has been avoiding criminal proceedings in India in AgustaWestland Case is being extradited by UAE Authorities to India. Under the guidance of Ajit Doval, National Security Advisor (NSA), the entire operation is being coordinated

by Incharge Director/CBI M. Nageswara Rao. A team lead by A. Sai Manohar, Joint Director/CBI has been to Dubai for the purpose."

The CBI further informed that Christain's sister Sasha Ozeman had been in the news for standing by her brother's side and made public statements pertaining to the involvement of Christian in the VVIP Chopper deal case.

International Gita Mahotsav at Kurukshetra from Dec 7 to 23

Christian's extradition, which took place days after a Dubai court rejected his plea against the move, marks a major success for Prime Minister Narendra Modiled central government and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, who had been pushing for his extradition.

The Rs 3,600 crore AgustaWestland VIP helicopter deal, finalised during the previous government of Manmohan Singh, had got mired in allegations of kickbacks. The 54-year-old Michel is an accused in the case along with some others including former Air Chief SP Tyagi. According to the Enforcement Directorate charge sheet filed in a court here two years back, Michel had received kickbacks to the tune of 30 million Euros from AgustaWestland for the deal involving a purchase of 12 VIP helicopters. The deal, signed in 2007, was scrapped in 2013 following the bribery allegations.

Extradition proceedings were held before UAE Court against Christian on the extradition request of CBI. Vide order dated November 19, 2018, the Court of Dubai upheld the lower court decision for possibility of extraditing Christian to Indian authorities. Accordingly, Christian is being extradited to face the legal proceedings.

Haryana’s prestigious International Gita Mahotsav-2018 will be organised from December 7 to 23 in Kurukshetra.

Artists and artisans of national and international repute will participate in the International Crafts and Saras Mela, which will simultaneously be organised from December 7-23.

An official spokesman of the Haryana government said that this year, Mauritius would be the partner country and Gujarat would be the partner state in the celebrations of the festival. The Mahotsav is an annual event which is organised every year in collaboration

with the Kurukshetra Development Board (KDB) in Kurukshetra.

The spokesperson said that the main events would be organised from December 13 to 18. The major attractions will include international Gita seminar from December 1315, while Sant Sammelan would be organised on December 16 in which renowned saints from the country and abroad would participate. The complete recital of Srimad Bhagwad Gita by devotees is scheduled for December 17, while grand ‘Maha Aarti’ and ‘Deepdan’ would be held on December 18.

India to ‘sort out’ sanction

Memorial service for Bush waiver over S-400 purchase deal held at US Capitol The United States and Indian officials in the coming days will sort out all issues related to the United States possibly waiving sanctions against India for its purchase of Russian S-400 air defense systems, Secretary of Defense James Mattis said at the Pentagon.

"We'll sort out all those issues here today, and in the days ahead… we’ll work all this forward," Mattis told reporters on Monday when asked if he expects New Delhi to get a sanctions waiver over the S-400 purchase.

Mattis also noted that India has spent many years in non-aligned status despite drawing a lot of weapons from Russia.

The defense secretary said he would discuss a number of issues with his Indian counterpart who is now visiting Washington, DC. In early October, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Sputnik that

Russia and India had signed a historic agreement on the supply of S-400s to New Delhi. The United States voiced its concern over the Indian plans to purchase the S-400 systems, noting that sanctions over the deal could not be ruled out.

Russian-manufactured S-400 Triumph is the next-generation mobile missile defense system which can carry three different types of missiles capable of destroying a variety of aerial targets at a short-to-extremely-long range, from reconnaissance aircraft to ballistic missiles.

Commencing former United States President George H. W. Bush's funeral proceedings, the 41st President's body was on Monday brought to the US Capitol in Washington D. C., where he will lie in state until Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, House Majority Leader Mitch McConnell paid tribute by lauding Bush's "steady hand", keeping the US on course for decades.

"There was a kindness about the man that was evident to everyone who ever met him. All his years in public service were characterized by kindness, modesty and patriotism," Pence said.

President Donald Trump, along with First Lady Melania will visit the Capitol building later tonight to pay their respects. They will also visit the Bush family at the Blair House, the President's guest house located across the street from the White House on Tuesday.

Speak up or lose some control of your rental - By Mike Butler A draft of proposed changes to tenancy law and extra standards for rental property will reduce the control that owners have over properties and cost us $7000 per property with little benefit to show. To encourage owners to speak out, a public meeting will take place on Sunday, December 9, at the Balmoral Community Hall at 3.30pm.

Proposed changes to tenancy law would prevent owners from ending tenancies, ban fixed-term tenancies, allow tenants to modify a property, allow tenants to keep pets, and enable Government officials to enter boarding houses at any time.

Additional standards for rental properties could require heat pumps, additional insulation, extractor fans in bathrooms and kitchens, a polythene sheet on the ground under every house, and draughtstop tape around windows and doors, at an estimated cost of $7000 per property.

If these requirements were necessary for public health, why are they limited to the occupants of 588,700 rental properties and not extended to New Zealand’s 1.1-million owner-occupied homes.

I have owned and managed rooms, flats, and houses in Hastings since 1990, which was four years after the Residential Tenancies Act became our rule book. The difference between requirements then and now is extreme.

Rental property owners have faced an

escalating threat over the last 10 years, when everything was presented as a crisis and rental property owners were to blame.

Media coverage of rental property issues has been poorly informed with extreme emotional claims from politicians, academics, and rental advocates swamping facts. It looked like war was being waged on landlords.

My background is in journalism, to counter the anti-owner rhetoric, two months ago, with others in Hastings and Wellington, we set up Stop the War on Tenancies to provide accurate information to media, politicians, and to the general public.

We set up a website at www.tenancieswar. nz as a resource, mainly for owners, and did a fair amount of advertising on Facebook to make sure that owners put in submissions on proposed changes to the Residential Tenancies Act, as well as on the extra standards that were being proposed for rentals.

Once the submissions deadline passed, we sent in a series of requests under the Official Information Act to find out the facts that were not being released.

One response revealed that 4761 submissions were received for the Residential Tenancies Act consultation and 1769 were received for the extra standards for rental property.

Another response revealed that advice to the Minister of Housing and Urban

Development, Phil Twyford, showed that the only benefits from the regulations to be inserted into the Healthy Homes Guarantee Act were only from insulation and draught-proofing, with heating, extractor fans, and moisture-proofing mainly incurring costs without benefits: The papers revealed that insulation $2452 (an insulation top-up costs roughly the same as first-time insulation), a heat pump $3000, two extractor fans $1000, a ground moisture barrier $700, and draught-proofing (costs unclear) led to a total cost of around $7000.

The Minister was advised that anything over insulating to the 1978 standard of R1.9, which achieves 80 percent heat-loss

reduction, was largely wasted investment.

Despite that, the Minister’s consultation sought opinions on extra insulation as if public opinion was more accurate than data obtained by measurement.

It appears from the papers that the total number of uninsulated rental properties in New Zealand is unknown, so that it appears that all that actually needs to be done, if reducing heat loss in winter is a worthy aim, is to find out what properties are uninsulated and take steps to remedy this. An offer from the Government of free insulation subject to a visit by a Government official to confirm that the property is uninsulated could achieve that. There is little evidence that there is much wrong with New Zealand’s private rental housing stock. The most recent horror stories about a mouldy house in Auckland was a State house that the Minister is responsible for and he was conspicuously silent about that.

Rental property is a $6-billion GDP sector of the New Zealand economy. It should not be used as a political football. Central Government should treat it with the same respect that it does with other sectors.

The time has come for private rental property owners to speak up and put pressure on politicians. It won’t be business as usual until we get a government that affirms property rights.

All-Eyes on the Market as LVR Restrictions Eased It’s been an interesting week as the Reserve Bank announced last Wednesday that from January 2019, banks will be allowed to lend 20 per cent of their new loans to owner-occupiers with a deposit of less than 20 per cent. This was the news many economists and property experts were hoping for as the market has changed significantly in the past year and could be the break first-time buyers have been waiting for.

Here’s what you need to know:

Reserve Bank: Home-lending restrictions to ease The big news that has hit the market is the easing of mortgage lending restrictions by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, a decision that was not made lightly as vulnerabilities in the market may be persistent. With risks to the New Zealand’s financial system easing, a decline of credit growth and with the stabilising house prices, the Reserve Bank are confident in their decision to ease loan-to-value ratio (LVR) restrictions on banks' new mortgage loans.

Loan-to-value restrictions were first introduced in 2013 in an attempt to cool down an overheated housing market.

During this time, there was a heightening risk to the housing sector as almost a third of new lending was at a high LVR. Those restrictions were eased earlier this year to 15 per cent of new loans to owner-occupiers can have deposits of less than 20 per cent and 5 per cent of loans to property investors can have deposits of less than 35 per cent.

the lending rules could be great news for those looking to enter the property market for the first time. With the housing market beginning to stabilise, the relaxation of LVRs will be music to the ears of first-time buyers.

Real Estate Institute chief executive Bindi Norwell covered the significance of the

LVR changes on first home buyers, "If you think of a $560,000 median price for the country, that's $112,000 [ for a 20 per cent deposit]. If they reduce it by five per cent it’s down to about $84,000. So that's about a $28,000 difference, a huge impact."

The new restrictions, which will come into effect in January will have Owneroccupier restriction shift to 20%, and banks will be able to lend 5 per cent of their new loans to investors with a deposit of less than 30 per cent. Means other property investors will need to pay 30% deposit against 35% earlier.

With the changes LVR has had on the market over the last six years alongside recent changes to the law in regard to property, such as the adoption of the responsible lending code, foreign buyer restrictions, and the extension of the bright line tax test, it’s no surprise the Reserve Bank have brought forward these changes.

3 tbsp canola oil 2 tsp cumin seeds 1 onion, finely diced 1 tbsp fresh crushed garlic 1 tbsp fresh crushed ginger 1 tsp turmeric 1 ½ tsp garam masala 1 tsp salt 1 tsp ground fenugreek 3 medium tomatoes, diced 2 tbsp tomato paste 2 cups cold water 400g paneer cut into 2cm x 2cm cubes 1 cup frozen peas ¼ cream ½ cup chopped fresh coriander Salt and red chilli powder to taste Chopped fresh coriander to garnish (optional)

Heat oil in a large pan over a low heat.

Add cumin seeds and until you start to smell the aroma of cumin coming through.

Add onion stirring continuously so it doesn’t stick to bottom of pan. Cook until almost brown.

Stir in the garlic and ginger and cook until softened and browned. Add turmeric,

garam masala, salt, fenugreek and continue cooking until you can start to smell the spice aromas.

Stir through tomato and keep cooking until you start to see the oil separating form the onion and spice mixture. Add tomato paste cook through so it all comes together. Be sure that you take your time with this and keep stirring so that it does not stick to the bottom of the pan. The

Editorial Sweeping rental law change Government will have to look for a middle path

T

he Government has announced its proposed changes to the rules around rental properties but will give both landlords and tenants an opportunity to know their views and opinions before making them law.

"Our tenancy laws are antiquated and don't reflect the fact that renting is now a long-term reality for many of our families,” as Housing Minister Phil Twyford said.

Insecure tenure can force families to continually keep moving to a new house.

This is particularly tough on the children whose education suffers when they have to keep changing schools. The main points in the proposals for change are ending no-cause tenancy terminations, while ensuring landlords can still evict "rogue" tenants, increasing the notice, a landlord must give tenants to terminate a tenancy from 42 to 90 days and limiting rent increases to once a year. Most landlord fear these proposed changes will wreak havoc on them and will let the tenants go loose and renting will not remain an attractive investment option.

While the fears of landlords seem quite genuine as all the indicated changes are only going to favour or benefit the tenants. This seems like the government’s desperate attempt to tackle the housing issue at the cost of investors and landlords or at least trying to buy time by bringing some changes in tenancy laws till the housing availability significantly improves. While some proposed changes like keeping a check on bidding of renting property is a real issue which should have some sort of a capping on this practice, other changes like allowing pets in home or changes to fixed term tenancy should surely remain a landlord’s prerogative. In most cases the land lords want tenants who are keen to stay for longer period of time, so there is no need to even touch this point.

The government should remember that today’s tenant is future’s landlord as well as not everyone is going to end all his/her life being a tenant. The changes must be balanced and suitable to both the parties, so the property investment stays an attractive option and enough houses are available in market all the time to renters. The proposals to amend the Residential Tenancies Act 1986 were widely expected, and line up with what Labour promised ahead of last year's election. The Government says when it was introduced in 1986, only 26 percent of children lived in rental homes - it's now 43 percent. Nearly 600,000 households now rent - the highest it's ever been. Fifty-seven percent of Maori and 67 percent of Pacific people live in rental housing.

The letting fees are already on their way out, with the Residential Tenancies (Prohibiting Letting Fees) Amendment Bill at select committee already and landlords are already under lot of pressure due to this, as property management companies are going to pass this cut to them. The landlords will have no options left except for increasing the rents to cover this cut and eventually it will be the poor tenant again at the receiving end. Hence the proposed change of abolishing letting fee does not benefit the renters also in anyway because they will have to bear the burnt end of the day.

The government’s accusation on landlords for scaremongering the property investors and renters does not sound right as we have to look into these changes from the perspective of both parties without any bias so neither of the party should be at loss, which apparently in this case is, and that is landlords or property investors. I think renters also need to behave with lot more maturity and more sensibly and not to look at short term gains only. Only a long-term solution will be more sustainable and a win-win for both the parties.

Parents, here's how your kids can gain FINANCIAL KNOWLEDGE early on According to a recent study, children learn more about finances from their parents than any other source, and hence, it is important for parents to give their children real-world experience with money to prepare them financially for adulthood.

The process through which parents impart this knowledge onto their children is known as "financial socialisation." Much of the existing literature on financial socialisation focuses on two things: the example parents set for their children, and what moms and dads directly teach their kids about money. However, research often overlooks a third important piece: giving kids hands-on practice managing money.

According to a study, which was published in the Journal of Family Issues, parents can give their kids practice with money in a variety of ways. They might give them a regular allowance, pay them for tasks that go above and beyond their normal chores, reward good grades with cash, or encourage them to save for special purchases or charitable donations.

The specifics don't really matter, nor does the amount of money, which may vary based on a family's financial situation.

The important thing is that parents give children hands-on experience with money early when the stakes are still low.

"If the first-time kids use a credit card or have to work or have to save up for something or have a bank account is when they're on their own, that's not a good time to be practicing," said the lead author of the study, Ashley LeBaron.

"It's important for parents to give kids age-appropriate financial experiences when they're monitoring them. Let them make mistakes so you can help them learn from them and help them develop habits before they're on their

own when the consequences are a lot bigger and they're dealing with larger amounts of money," she added.

LeBaron and her collaborators interviewed 115 study participants, including 90 college students ages 18-30, as well as some of those students' parents and grandparents.

They asked the students what and how their parents taught them about money, and in the case of parents and grandparents, also asked what and how they taught their own children about money.

Most participants said they had been given some sort of experience with money in their youth, and they considered that experience to be extremely valuable in preparing them to manage money on their own.

Those who didn't get those kinds of experiences wished that they had.

Based on the interviews, the researchers identified three main themes around what participants learned from the financial experiences they were given as children: how to work hard, how to manage money and how to spend wisely. They also identified three primary reasons why parents said they provided their children with hands-on experience with money: to help them learn financial skills, acquire financial values and become independent.

"I think it's hard for parents, sometimes, to let their kids make mistakes. It's tempting to just shield kids from everything related to money, but it's really important for parents to get money into kids' hands early on so they can practice working for it, managing it and learning how to spend it wisely," LeBaron said.

Ideally, LeBaron said parents will teach their kids about money through modeling, explanation and hands-on experience.

New Zealand blocks HUAWEI: imports over significant security risk

(Continue from pg. 1) Under the Telecommunications Interception, Communications and Security Act 2013 (TICSA) telecommunications firms must request authorisation from the GCSB for upgrades to their networks regardless of provider.

The GCSB vetting process took a delicate turn in light of a US request that its Five Eyes partners refuse to allow Huawei participation in their 5G upgrades, citing the high likelihood that Huawei equipment could be used for Chinese intelligence purposes.

That is particularly true for equipment embedded in the "core" of a 5G network, as opposed to the periphery where Huawei used to operate, because it is now possible under the 5G plan for New Zealand for some previously "core" features to migrate to peripheral parts of the network for the purposes of speeding up data flows.

The telecommunications industry sees Huawei as a good choice as a 5G provider because of its positive impact on systems efficiency and profitability.

The GCSB and its Five Eyes partners see Huawei equipment as a Trojan Horse into the local telecommunication

infrastructure.

Huawei is seen by the Five Eyes partners as an untrustworthy commercial operator that serves as a front for Chinese signals intelligence gathering.

Diplomatically, it would be very difficult for the GCSB to green light Huawei's involvement in the 5G upgrade in the face of the US request to withhold approval, especially if the other Five Eyes partners (Australia, Canada and the UK) agree to the US request (Australia already has and Canada and the UK are said to be leaning towards agreement).

The fallout from such a decision could open a rift within the Five Eyes partnership because New Zealand is already seen as the Achilles Heel of the network given its past record of poor cyber security awareness (say, in the overlap between professional and personal communications).

It is therefore prudent for the GCSB to side with the US on the matter.

Besides reassuring its allies, the GCSB decision also signals to the Chinese government that it is not, in fact, the weak link in the Anglophone intelligence network.

For their part, the Chinese need to be careful with their response to the

adverse decision, as any retaliation will give the lie to their claims that Huawei is independent of the regime and support those who argued against Huawei's 5G involvement in the first place.

The GCSB decision comes in wake of the Minister of Intelligence and Security, Andrew Little, declaring as recently as a few days ago that New Zealand would be independent in making its decision about approval.

It also demonstrates a disconnect between the minister and the career intelligence professional who serve under him, since it is doubtful that the latter would have led Mr Little to believe that the matter of approval was open to negotiation.

To be sure, Mr Little needed to factor the commercial considerations at stake as well as the diplomatic fallout with China

once approval was rejected, but his dissembling was unfortunate.

In the end, security and diplomatic concerns involving New Zealand's Anglophone allies outweighed market considerations and the potentially negative reaction of the Chinese government to the decision.

The decision may be a cost-effective as well, since the blanket ban on Huawei's involvement in the 5G upgrade eliminates the possibility that the GCSB will be spending time and resources in the future trying to plug potential vulnerabilities brought into the system under false pretences (as the UK had to do with a previous generation of Huawei products). - RNZ

Kiwi Cricketing Summer • Apurv Shukla New Zealand Cricket team begins a busy home summer with a two-test series against Sri Lanka. It starts on the 15th of December at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. Black Caps started their international season for 2018-19 against Pakistan in difficult conditions in the Middle East. The team will look for a solid home season, as they continue their build up to the Cricket World Cup in England next year in May. Sri Lanka got initiated into Test Cricket in 1982. Since then the Island nation's cricketing graph has had a steady upward spiral, culminating in their famous World Cup win of 1996 at Lahore. They were the pioneers of introducing attacking batting at the top of the innings. The past few years though have been difficult for Sri Lanka. Two of their best ever batsmen in Mahela Jayawardene and Kumara Sangakkara retired around the same time (duo combined have more than24, 000 test runs between them). Also, the team has been mired in a host of off field issues. When politics enters sport, it leads to adverse outcomes. The Cricket Board and selectors have been playing musical chairs, with none assured of

a stable tenure. There have also been reports of discord between the coaching staff and players. Their recent 3-0 loss test series loss to England at home, was the first time England had whitewashed the Lankans in their backyard. The squad touring New Zealand will also not have the services of Rangana Herath.

The spinner retired after the first test against England, after a stellar career where he picked up 433 test wickets.

India follows Sri Lanka for a five match one day and three game T-20 series, in what promises to be the highlight of the summer. India is the global powerhouse of cricket. This tour will provide the Indian team one of its final opportunities to fine tune its plans for the World Cup. Expect a playing eleven very similar to the team that will take the field when India kicks off its campaign to win the World Cup for the third time, at Southampton against South Africa. A tour by India also means a financial windfall for New Zealand Cricket (NZC). Expect all stadiums across the North Island, where India play their games to be sell outs. Also, NZC now has a lucrative television deal to beam

cricket live in India. This also presents an excellent opportunity to market New Zealand as an attractive tourist destination.

Rounding off the summer will be a first ever three-test series with Bangladesh at home. It is imperative for the health of World Cricket that nations like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka play good cricket. Otherwise the chasm between the top and bottom ranked nations will continue to grow. It then has a flow on detrimental effect on the sporting and commercial abilities of these countries.

This will also make the proposed World Test Championships set to begin next year, an unattractive event.

Sonali Bendre returns to India,

Sonali Bendre, who has been battling cancer for a while now, returned to Mumbai in the wee hours of Monday.

Her husband Goldie Behl said that she is “recovering very well” and does not have to go back to New York for further treatment.

Every detail about Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ fairytale wedding over the weekend has been raising the excitement of the couple’s millions of fans.

“It’s been six months and I would like to inform everybody that Sonali is doing good and she is back for good. She is recovering very well. Thank you all for the love and support. Her treatment is over, for now, Sonali is absolutely fine.

Just like what happens in such diseases – regular checkups, regular scans – that we have to do since this disease can come back,” an elated Behl told media here.

“For now there is nothing as such that she will have to go back for. I am very happy that she is back home. Like any other patient, she will have to go for regular checkups. She is a very strong and determined woman and I am very proud of her,” he added.

Sonali had earlier shared on Instagram that she is on her way to Mumbai.

And now, PeeCee’s cousin and actor Parineeti Chopra has revealed everything that happened at the sangeet function in Jodhpur and going by the Instagram post, it was definitely full of fun and frolic.

“They say 'Distance makes the heart grow fonder'. It sure does. But let's never underestimate what distance teaches you. Being away from home in the city of New York, I realised I was walking amongst so many stories," she wrote.

"And now I'm on my way back to where my heart is. It's a feeling I can't describe in words but I'm going to try - it's the joy to see my family and friends again, the excitement to do what I love and mainly the gratitude for the journey I've had up until this moment," she added.

Deepika and Ranveer tied the knot in Lake Como, Italy in a traditional Konkani ceremony on November 14, while a Sindhi wedding was organised on November 15, both of which were attended by close-knit relatives of the duo.

After their wedding, the much-in-love couple jetted off to Bengaluru where they hosted a wedding reception at Deepika's hometown on November 21.

Following the event, Ranveer's sister, Ritika Bhavnani, hosted a post-wedding bash for the couple at Grand Hyatt in Mumbai.

The two turned for lovely hosts for another wedding reception in Mumbai on November 28.

The ‘Namaste England’ star divulged that the Chopra family had rehearsed for days to depict “Mimi didi and Nick’s love story through songs, scenes and skit – full Bollywood style.”

However, “the ladke wallas” stumped the bride’s family when they stepped on stage.

“They had been rehearsing for a long time. They sang and danced LIVE, including lip syncing hindi songs!” the post added.

The ‘Jabariya Jodi’ actor concluded by writing that the spirit of competitiveness was overpowered with “love, happiness, laughs, whistles, cheering and noise!”

She also revealed that the ‘trophy’ was shared by the bride and the groom’s family.

videos from the ceremony held at the Umaid Bhawan Palace. For the sangeet, the ‘Quantico’ star chose to wear Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla gold and silver sequins saree.

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas tied the knot in two elaborate ceremonies. While they exchanged vows in a Christian wedding on Saturday, a traditional Hindu ceremony took place on Sunday.

The couple is yet to release their wedding pictures.
