Bill proposes 20 years residency to get

NZ SUPER New Zealand could be a step closer to increasing the minimum residency required to get New Zealand Superannuation after a bill proposing an increase from 10 to 20 years was drawn from the parliamentary ballot.

New Zealand and Australia currently have the lowest residency requirements in the OECD at 10 years for eligibility to the state pension while the average across the OECD is 26 years. But a bill put forward by New Zealand First MP Mark Patterson could change that, if it gains support from other political parties. Patterson's bill proposes raising the minimum residency from 10 to 20 years after the age of 20 - meaning a childhood spend in New Zealand would not count towards the qualification. Under the current law people have to be resident for 10 years with five of those being after the age of 50 to be eligible. The previous National-led government

had proposed increasing the minimum residency requirement to 20 years before it was voted out of power. A 2016 review of policy by Retirement Commissioner Diane Maxwell recommended it increase to 25 years. In her report Maxwell said the change would bring New Zealand's policy more into line with other countries and mean New Zealand would not have a

A bill is proposing to increase the residency requirement from 10 to 20 years for New Zealand Superannuation comparatively low criteria to qualify for a full government pension.

"The length of residence needs to be appropriate in the context of increasing international mobility and reform of overseas pensions," she said at the time. Maxwell recommended the change be introduced immediately for new migrants while the 10 year residency criteria would apply for those currently living in New Zealand meaning it would take some time to transition.

Local Stories Exploitation of Indian workers Police and Immigration New Zealand have become increasingly aware of an ongoing problem around the exploitation of Indian workers in New Zealand, and as a result a number of businesses and employers have been convicted for exploiting workers. Abuse of workers ranges from paying them less than the average wage, forcing them to work long hours, refusing to provide them time off or issue employees time slips. Recently a reputable business was found to be encouraging employees on student visas to work more than the allowed 20hours per week, yet failed to pay them for more than the 20 hours. An investigation in to this business found that many of the Indian migrant workers on work visas were only paid 40 hours despite working between 45 – 60 hours regularly each week. On another occasion a worker was forced to work seven days a week without sick leave, holiday pay, overtime or a day off in lieu for public holidays worked. The employer responsible for this abuse made his employee who was living with him at the time, cook and clean for his boss. Police and immigration New Zealand recognise that migrants are a vulnerable sector of the workforce because they are less likely to know their rights and entitlements compared to New Zealand workers.

What we have found is that many employees are reluctant to come forward, particularly when there was a possible breach in their visa conditions. What we must remember, is that Indian and migrant workers have the same rights as all other workers in New Zealand, and Immigration services treats migrants fairly when they come forward to report genuine exploitation. We encourage anyone being forced to work for less than the minimum wage, or work excessive hours, to come forward if they feel that they are being exploited by their employers. In the end, I would also like to take this opportunity to wish all the readers of The Indian News, a very Happy and Prosperous festival of Diwali and a happy New Year. Have lots of fun but be very vigilant and drive safely. Abuse of workers can be reported directly to Immigration New Zealand or Crime Stoppers on 0800 555111.

Diwali festival celebrated with pomp and show Tens of thousands of people turned up to Diwali Mela organised by Auckland Council annually comprising of almost two days of performances and a large selection of street food. This was the seventeenth year of the annual festival which first started in Auckland in 2002 to acknowledge traditional and contemporary Indian culture in New Zealand. The weekend long "festival of lights," as it is commonly known, signifies the triumph of light over darkness and renewal of life. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern officially opened the festival on stage at the Aotea Centre on Saturday the 20th October. Despite of drawing backlash from both Chinese and Indian communities the Opposition leader tried to show his and his Party’s brave face at the Indian event, with both the Indian MPs on his side. For any normal human being these kinds of situations could be quite

embarrassing and humiliating, but Mr Bridges seem to be in a shrug off mode. Even in his two minutes address on the occasion, The Indian High Commissioner Mr Sanjiv Kohli, did not seem to be in a mood to show any mercy either to Simon Bridge by showing him the mirror in context with both India and China’s size and might by telling him that it could possibly a subject of a life time research for him or his Party as who is better then who with both countries having billion plus people each. Both Mr Bridges and Mr Ross made race -based comments that pitted the value of Indian and Chinese MPs against one another, which drew backlash from both communities after the recording was made public. This did not deter Mr Bridges and other National MPs from attending the Indian festival today. Mr Bridges said there was not any negative reception from festival-goers and that

the day had been "fantastic". In a cover up exercise, he publicly acknowledged the party's Indian MPs on stage in Aotea Square. Like every year, this year also programme started with the recitation of holy hymn by the priests of Bharatiya Mandir, Acharya Upendra Bhai Joshi and Pandit Govind Prasad Sharma and later helping the Prime Minister in lighting the ceremonial lamp to announce the beginning of the programme officially.

The Diwali Mela concluded with the beautiful fireworks around nine on the night of Sunday 21st October with more than ten thousand people cheering and applauding the show. Like every year, this year also a lots of talented artists came from India as well to perform in the Diwali Mela apart from hundreds of local young and old very talented people who made this occasion really enjoyable.

One Year On: The coalition government's first 12 months (news continue from pg. 1) A year ago to the day Labour and New Zealand First revealed the details of their coalition agreement and thenNational leader Bill English was fronting up to his caucus for the first time after his party's fate was sealed by Winston Peters. Two days later, in the pomp and ceremony of Government House, a bevy of new ministers was sworn in, many of whom had just served the good part of a decade on the opposition benches. There were a few old hands in the line-up, but most could barely believe their luck, after a general election transformed by Jacinda Ardern taking over as Labour leader. But there was little time before reality hit in the form of the 100-day plan, an ambitious list of top priorities - a list

drawn up in opposition which would quickly become a blueprint for the new government to plot its early course. That was a chaotic time with a messy administrative transition and inexperienced ministers facing the challenge of getting legislation through the House on deadline, including a scramble to introduce a year's fee-free for some tertiary students and reversing National's tax cuts to implement the family’s package. Underneath all of that were ministers and staff trying to figure out how to run the coalition government, and how to keep any disagreements under wraps. Labour, New Zealand First and the Greens have settled into the arrangement, with the linchpin the relationship between Jacinda Ardern and Winston Peters.

She trusted the New Zealand First leader to take over while she took time off for maternity leave, and when she returned the government remained in one piece. The government has acted on fundamental differences it had with National: resuming payments to the New Zealand Super Fund, banning most foreign buyers from the residential market, cancelling tax cuts, starting a government building programme and putting a halt to most new permits for oil and gas. Finance Minister Grant Robertson reported a healthy set of books to end off the financial year, but he still has a major challenge on his hands - to deliver the big ticket coalition manifesto, while saving enough for the "rainy days" when Finance Ministers are most closely judged.

The government has so far not lived up the expectations of many in the public sector and social services; there's currently a great deal of industrial unrest driven by key quarters of traditional Labour support, including education, health and transport unions. Mr Robertson and colleagues are also keeping an uneasy eye on international developments, including trade tensions between China and the US, events far away but with the potential to have a negative impact on New Zealand's open economy. The government's two main vulnerabilities are its economic management and a breakdown in coalition, or confidence and supply, arrangements. The test for Ms Ardern as prime minister is that she has to be the one seen to be holding the reins. -RNZ

Politics Tax, Red Tape and Bureaucracy For a Government that made a lot of noise during the last general election time about creating a more equal New Zealand; all that they have done is to spoil the good work that the previous New Zealand National Party Government did The cost of living for New Zealanders is outpacing our wage increases. And yet this Government continues to pile on more taxes on innocent, hardworking Kiwis. Petrol prices are at record levels, yet all we hear is it is beyond their control to bring prices to affordable levels. Drivers are angry every time they fill up at the pump and it gives them no comfort from the Government’s willingness to double-dip on tax if petrol prices keep rising An excise tax increase of 4 cents a litre especially when petrol prices already at a record high shows a complete lack of empathy on part of this Labour led coalition. And the sad part Mr Speaker is that they will stubbornly insist more taxes are needed even though Kiwis are already reeling from rising living costs. The Associate Finance Minister has now signalled there will be no let-up for motorists if prices keep rising even though the Government may end up raking in as much in additional GST as

it would from increases in excise. For example, if petrol prices go up by 30 cents, the GST on that alone would be 4 cents. Fuel prices drove up consumer prices in the third quarter but the full impact on New Zealand’s economy is only starting to be felt as it shows up in the transport cost of getting raw materials to factories and finished goods and services to consumers. One must ask how all this fair on ordinary New Zealanders is. Apart from petrol more Kiwis are seeing their rents rise With incomes falling, rents rising how can we buy it to the rhetoric of a creating an equitable society. Clearly this is a PR exercise on part of this Labour led coalition. Any measures that can lead to job creation, high skill and high growth as well as a high wage economy are well and truly being quashed by this Labour led coalition. How else may we explain a ban on oil and gas exploration? The New Zealand Treasury have on record stated that this ban will have no effect on our net carbon emissions. Rather it is very likely that when we import oil and gas from far away countries our accounted emissions will be far higher. In addition, we have a

Government that is wasting money on free fees, foreign diplomats and horses. In my own electorate of Manukau East as well as the wider Auckland region each time I have had a chance to have discussions with small and medium sized enterprises they have provided a consistent response that this Government’s policies are hurting them. But none of the businesses feel that this Government is listening. They feel their concerns are being dismissed. In stark contrast to the Labour led coalition’s attitude the National party is listening. We’ve gone directly to the people who make up 97 per cent of New Zealand’s total businesses, employ 600,000 Kiwis and generate some $80 billion of wealth each year. Businesses say they are weighed down by red tape and bureaucracy. They say that this Government’s policies have them worried about taxation and labour laws. Businesses thrive when Governments provide the framework for them to thrive. Not when Governments impose multiple laws to increase costs and compliances. It is little surprise then that small business confidence has fallen to a 10-year low – a net 44 percent of those

surveyed by ANZ are pessimistic. Investment and hiring intentions have turned negative and more firms expect profits to fall. They are struggling to find skilled workers. These are real businesses run by everyday New Zealanders who have taken a risk in starting their own businesses, many may have mortgaged their homes so that they can invest and hire more workers. In comparison we at the New Zealand National Party would restore a policy framework that promote economic growth, which is the only sustainable way to increase job opportunities and wages.

5,133 vacant posts in subordinate judiciary unacceptable: SC Taking note of 5,133 posts lying vacant in the subordinate judiciary across the country, the Supreme Court on Monday said that the existence of these vacancies is "wholly unacceptable". A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul took suo motu cognizance of the filling up of the vacancies in lower courts and sought information from high courts and the state governments. The top court also noted there is a total number of 22,036 posts in the subordinate judiciary and out of these, 5,133 posts were lying vacant. "22,036 constitute the total workforce of the District and Subordinate Judiciary in the country," the bench said. The bench, while pursuing the information collected by the Registry of the Supreme Court, Registries of different High Courts, said that it indicates that recruitment process to fill up 4,180 posts is underway, and the recruitment processes are poised at different stages in different states. "The existence of vacancies to the extent indicated is wholly unacceptable. The Registry of this Court is, therefore, directed to register a suo motu writ petition," the bench said. Amritsar train tragedy

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Monday launched a scathing attack on Congress-led Punjab government and said that they are on mission to cover-up the Amritsar train accident. Badal said, "Congress senior leaders including ministers are involved in this case. With the attitude of the government, it looks like they are on a mission to coverup. There is no remorse, no regret and no seriousness in Punjab Government." He also outlined Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh's visit to Israel and termed it as unfortunate. "Such big unfortunate state had happened in the state and CM has gone abroad to Tel Aviv which shows their seriousness. Senior leaders who organised the event

It also asked if the expected time to complete the ongoing process of recruitment of judges can be shortened and completed before the given time schedule. "Number of vacancies that have occurred both in the Civil Judge cadre and the Higher Judicial Service cadre since the date of issuance of notification advertising the vacancies till the date on which the process is expected to be complete," the order stated. It also sought information whether the infrastructure and manpower available in the different states are adequate if all the posts that are borne in the cadre are to be filled up. The court sought the information by October 31 and posted the matter for hearing on November 1. Chief Justice Gogoi before taking oath said that he will take on the burgeoning pendency figures on a priority during his 13-month long tenure as the next Chief Justice of India.

Badal also criticised Punjab government for not registering a case against any named individual in connection with Amritsar train accident and said, "The whole case looks like a cover-up. As many as 60 people have died but there is no one named in the case. Filing case against unidentified people means they are doing a cover-up. People who are fighting for justice, the people who were protesting, on those cases of 307 have been registered." 59 people were killed after a train crushed Dussehra revellers while they were watching an effigy of Ravana being burnt near Dhobi Ghat ground in Amritsar.

Assault case: Delhi court

allows chief secretary's plea seeking special public prosecutor A Delhi Court on Monday allowed the plea of Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash seeking appointment of a Special Public Prosecutor (SSP) in his alleged assault case. The court directed the Delhi Commissioner of Police to appoint an officer, not below the rank of Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) who has not been involved with the investigation of this case. It also said that advocates Siddharth Agarwal and V Madhurkar will be permitted to conduct the prosecution on behalf of the police officer, as long he is not appointed. Last week, the court reserved its order on the Chief Secretary's plea. Prakash had moved the application in his personal capacity requesting that the prosecutor in

the case be changed and a Special Public Prosecutor be appointed. The assault case dates back to February 20, when Prakash was allegedly attacked at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence by two lawmakers. Prakash also lodged a police complaint saying he was manhandled in presence of Kejriwal after being summoned to discuss Aadhaarrelated problems.

US withdrawal from INF to have multilateral repercussions: China The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Monday warned that the United States decision to unilaterally pull out from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) would have multiple negative effects. On Saturday, US President Donald Trump announced the country's withdrawal from the INF treaty over the alleged violations of the agreement by Russia. "The INF is an important agreement on arms control, reached by the United States and Russia during the Cold War. The treaty has played a significant role in stabilising international relations, supporting the global strategic balance and stability ... The [US] unilateral withdrawal from the agreement will have multilateral negative effects," the ministry's spokeswoman, Hua Chunying, told a briefing. The spokeswoman added that Trump's reference to Beijing when justifying his decision to pull out of the INF Treaty was erroneous. "It must be stressed that the reference to China in this matter is completely erroneous," Hua said. The US president argued on Saturday that it was "unacceptable" for Washington to continue to adhere to the agreement while both Russia and China were allegedly developing weapons prohibited under the treaty. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said on Sunday that Washington had no reasons to accuse Moscow of violating the agreement, adding that the United States had been breaching the treaty for years. He noted that withdrawal from the agreement benefited certain political forces in Washington that wanted

Saudi Arabia's King Salman bin Abdulaziz and crown prince Mohammed bin Salman called deceased journalist Jamal Khashoggi's son to extend their condolences on Monday. Salah Khashoggi, the late scribe's son, "expressed his sincere thanks" to the Saudi royalty for their thought, according to CNN who quoted Saudi state media. The son is a resident of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and has been unable to travel outside the country as his passport has

to continue acting in violation of the INF treaty. Russian lawmaker Konstantin Kosachev said the US plans to withdraw from the INF are aimed at moving the US weapons to the borders of Russia and China. "The destruction of the INF Treaty is aimed at moving the relevant class of US weapons to the territory of potential and, maybe real, enemy. That is primarily Russia and, secondly, China," Kosachev, the Russian upper house's International Affairs Committee head, said on Sunday. From the lawmaker's point of view the United States had been preparing for the withdrawal from the INF treaty since 2014. He noted that the US claims about alleged Russian violations of the treaty were absolutely unfounded. "Taking into account the role of the treaty in the control over arms and disarmament as well as the role it may play in ensuring the regional security, we are going to closely follow the US and Russian moves," Suga said. He pointed out that Tokyo and Washington used to exchange information in the sphere of security and nuclear disarmament. "I think they [the consultations] will be continued," Suga added.

Jared Kushner advises Saudi crown prince to be 'fully transparent' over Khashoggi's death Jared Kushner, the senior advisor and son-in-law of US President Donald Trump has said that he had advised Saudi Arabia's crown prince Mohammed bin Salman to be "fully transparent" in his investigation into Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi's death. Kushner, who has a close relationship with the crown prince, said that he had advised the latter that the "world was watching" and disappearance and death of the journalist was "very serious situation", CNN reported. "The world is watching. This is a very, very serious accusation. A very serious situation. To be sure you're transparent and to take this very seriously," Kushner told CNN at a conference on Monday when asked what he had told the crown prince. When asked if the crown prince has listened to his advice, Kushner said, "We'll

see if he takes that advice." Kushner, who is a White House adviser further noted that the Trump administration was still in the "fact-finding phase" regarding the death of Khashoggi. Khashoggi, who was living in America, went missing on October 2 after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. While Turkish officials claimed that Khashoggi was murdered in the consulate, Saudi Arabia's Attorney General said that the journalist died there after a brawl, adding that it was an accident.

Inernational News Surprise thunderstorm,

rains leave Qatar drenched

A surprise thunderstorm struck Qatar on Saturday, causing widespread flash floods due to torrential rains, bringing parts of the tiny Gulf nation to a standstill. In Abu Hamor suburb of capital Doha, 84 mm of rainfall was recorded in less than six hours, easily surpassing the country's average annual rainfall of 77 mm. With this, the desert country received almost a year's downpour in just a single day, Al Jazeera reported. The unseasonal rains also created a record of being the wettest October day that exceeded this month's average rainfall of just 1.1 mm. Road and air traffic were severely affected

due to the thunderstorm, with some flights being diverted to neighbouring Kuwait and Iran. The Qatari government has ordered schools, colleges, and government buildings to be closed until the situation improves. Residents have been warned not to venture out on flooded roads and stand near trees and other objects owing to gusty winds. Although the flood waters have receded at many places in Qatar, thunderstorms and rains are forecast on Sunday and Monday, before dry and sunny days return to Doha and around. The downpour is expected to be light and not prolonged.

Those expressing solidarity with Ahmadis can go to India or Israel: Pak extremist cleric Controversial Pakistani extremist cleric Khadim Rizvi lashed out at the students of Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) for meeting with the members of the Ahmadiyya community, saying those who wanted to express solidarity with them can leave the country and instead live in India or Israel. Earlier this month, the students had met the Ahmadis in Rabwah, as part of a project to promote peace, tolerance and acceptance of minorities in Pakistan. Reacting to the visit, Rizvi said, "Principal of a Lahore college took students to the centre for 'Qadiyanis', saying they want to promote brotherhood with the minorities. The government is not taking cognisance of this. I don't understand which direction they want to take Pakistan to. You are taking students to those people who are blasphemous to our Prophet. What do you want to tell and show to the world?" He added, "You (the principal) better realise what your condition will be. Behave like humans! We have told you several times that non-believer gets to a non-believer, a Jew to Jews and Christians gravitate towards Christians. Those who feel for these people can go to India or Israel," he added.

Rabwah is one of the few places in Pakistan which has the highest concentration of Ahmadis in the country. The Ahmadiyya or the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at is an Islamic religious movement founded in Punjab, in then British India, near the end of the 19th century. However, Pakistan's Constitution has declared the community as "non-Muslims." Its penal code subjects Ahmadis to severe legal restrictions and officially-sanctioned discrimination, making it criminal for the people of the community to call themselves Muslims, preach, propagate or disseminate materials on their faith, or refer to their houses of worship as mosques. The Pakistan government applies the anti-terrorism law as an unwarranted pretext to arrest members of the Ahmadiyya community.

First-Time Buyers Meet New Market Highs - But is it Enough? Plus, the Commercial Property Boom CoreLogic, a leading property data services provider reveal increase in market share figures for first home buyers, but the Salvation Army are still worried that we aren’t doing enough for those trying to get out of renting. The commercial property market has seen a huge surge over winter. Find out why as we look at the property market. Here’s what you need to know:

First-time Buyers Reach New Highs in Market Share Great figures have emerged from the latest CoreLogic third quarter statistics report on the market, which has revealed that first-time buyers are purchasing as many properties as investors with a mortgage. Owners of multiple properties buying with a mortgage now make up 24 per cent of buyers, up from 22 per cent earlier in the year. That number is interesting to look at as it is considerably less than the 28 per cent before new loan-to-value restrictions came into effect. First-home buyers have matched investors market share, making up 24 per cent of the market. Their percentage has been rising steadily since 2014 -

now reaching the level it was before the financial crisis. Experts have put this rising trend down to first time home buyers having the ability to withdraw from their KiwiSaver as well as their willingness to buy properties from suburbs outside of the city centre.

Calls for Government subsidized Home Ownership In a report published on Wednesday titled ‘Beyond Renting’, the Salvation Army has called for a Government subsidized home ownership scheme, dubbed "KiwiBuy", and stronger tenancy rights as a way to combat the higher cost of renting as well as adding more opportunity for first home buyers to enter the market. The report addressed the current ‘Kiwi Build’ scheme and labelled it as something that is still out of reach for some New Zealanders living on a smaller wage week-to-week and proposes a shared equity scheme where the Government has "maybe 40 per cent ownership" of a house but be a passive stakeholder. "Realistically, we have to look beyond our current ownership options," states Salvation Army senior policy advisor Alan Johnson.

A similar scheme was proposed earlier this year by the Green Party where buyers would purchase a small percentage of the property, the rest owned by the government, would be paid off across time as “rent.”

Fringe Properties Continue to sell well in Auckland Commercial property sales on the Auckland city fringe have boomed over winter which has been incredibly interesting for analysts, as the winter season usually brings a subdued market,

with a lull in new listings and sales due to many clients and customers being away. However, vendors have seen a huge surge in sales across winter in what they have whittled down to buyer demand for top quality commercial properties, particularly in the Auckland CBD and city fringe. The current surge in interest from investors into the commercial property market has come from those wanting to leave the residential property market for something more secure, especially with new laws coming into effect and easier to manage tenants.

Kiwis protected from broadband price shocks Broadcasting, Communications and Digital Media Minister Kris Faafoi says the new reduced-price cap for Chorus’ most commonly purchased wholesale fibre product protects New Zealanders from future price shocks, while providing a fair price for the telecommunications infrastructure company and certainty for retail service providers. Chorus’ 100/20 Megabits per second (Mbps) Ultra-Fast Broadband wholesale product is likely to become the basic fibre wholesale service (the ‘anchor service’) from 2020 under the Telecommunications (New Regulatory Framework) Amendment Bill. An anchor service ensures that a basic broadband service is available to consumers at a reasonable price, to provide an ‘anchor’ on the price and quality of other fibre services. Under the Amendment Bill, Chorus will be required to provide retailers with anchor services, which are the wholesale inputs to retail UFB services. The anchor services are the basic broadband and voice products.

“By constraining the starting price caps for the UFB services (such as the 100/20 Megabit service) to 2019 levels, we can ensure New Zealanders have broad price stability in these services as the transition to the new regulatory framework occurs,” Mr Faafoi said. In March this year, Chorus announced increases to its UFB wholesale fibre prices that departed from its forecast price path released in 2014. “The Government sought a contractual solution with Chorus on the price of its 100/20 Mbps service, and I’m pleased to announce Crown Infrastructure Partners and Chorus have agreed on a better price path. This represents a fairer deal for everyone: a good price for New Zealand broadband consumers, and a reasonable price for Chorus. “The new price cap also provides stability to retail service providers who will acquire the anchor product from Chorus when the new regulatory framework is implemented.”

The previous price cap was $49.65 per month. It will now be reduced to $45 from 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019 and then $46 from 1 July 2019 until 31 December 2019. The $46 price cap in December 2019 will form the starting price cap for the new ‘anchor’ UFB wholesale service price under the new regulatory regime from 1 January 2020.

News Death of Jamal Khashoggi Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters and Minister Trade and Export Growth David Parker say the New Zealand government continues to condemn in the strongest possible terms the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi by Saudi operatives. The death of the prominent journalist in the Turkish Consulate General in Istanbul has now been officially confirmed by the Saudi Arabian government. Saudi authorities have arrested 18 Saudi nationals and have dismissed several senior officials following an initial investigation of the Khashoggi case. “With the confirmation of the death we express our deepest condolences to Mr Khashoggi’s family and friends. Those responsible for his death must be held accountable,” said Mr Peters. “While this is an important admission, the killing by government operatives is deeply disturbing. Many questions remain unanswered.” “We look forward to the results of the investigation being led by Turkey and we urge Saudi Arabia to implement its undertaking to participate openly and transparently in that investigation,” he said. MFAT officials met with the Saudi Embassy in Wellington on Tuesday to

raise New Zealand’s concerns over Mr Khashoggi’s disappearance and have reiterated to the Saudi Embassy the need for the investigation to be full and Transparent. Trade Minister David Parker says as previously noted no New Zealand officials will attend the upcoming Future Investment Initiative ('Davos in the Desert') event in Riyadh. “As for the trading relationship in the region the FTA talks remain stalled pending the Gulf Cooperation Council resolving their dispute with Qatar, which we do not expected to be resolved in the near future,” said Mr Parker. “And the widely criticized Saudi sheep deal was an arrangement made by the previous government with a private sector partner, not with the Saudi Government,” he said. The New Zealand government is awaiting the outcome of the Turkish investigation and is keeping all options for next steps under review.

NZ moves up to second place on

riskiest country rankings New Zealand has moved up the ranks as the second riskiest country in the world, just behind Bangladesh. A review of 43 countries by the global insurer, Lloyd's of London, shows New Zealand has moved up one place since the first report was published in 2012, swapping with Chile for second and third place. "This report shows how risky New Zealand really is," Insurance Council chief executive Tim Grafton said. "Since the last report in 2012, we've seen the cost of the Canterbury earthquakes continue to rise, a second major earthquake striking Kaikoura and Wellington and a major flood in Edgecumbe." The report also found New Zealand had

the fourth highest rate of insurance penetration globally, dropping from third place in 2012. "It's important to note that although we have relatively high insurance penetration rates, that doesn't mean all our assets are adequately insured," Mr Grafton said. "It's possible that people are underestimating the cost to replace their assets, which could leave them vulnerable should another major disaster strike." The council said people should review their current cover to ensure it was fit for purpose in the event of a total loss.

Auckland rugby coach Alosio Taimo found guilty of 95 sex charges Alosio Taimo, the Auckland rugby coach on trial for sexually abusing boys, has been found guilty of most of the 106 charges laid against him. The 55-year-old has been on trial in the High Court at Auckland for nine weeks. This morning, after 17 hours of deliberations the jury returned with their verdicts. Taimo was found guilty of 95 of the charges against him and not guilty of 11 charges, including charges relating to one complainant. He was originally charged with offending against one boy in August 2016. The boy's aunt had overheard him telling his cousins that Taimo was gay and that he knew this because Taimo had touched him. She went to police who investigated and identified more complainants. The number of complainants grew again after Taimo's name suppression was lifted and his identity published in the media. The 106 charges laid by the Crown

spanned nearly 30 years, with the youngest complainant just nine-years-old at the time of the offending. Justice Moore told the jurors it had been a long and harrowing trial that had taken two and a half months of their lives. He said it had been a fraught and emotionally draining exercise and the community owed them a debt of gratitude for their service.

The Crown's case

Alosio Taimo on trial in the Auckland High Court.

Crown prosecutor Jasper Rhodes had argued Taimo sexually abused boys at his job at McDonald's where he worked as a manager, at a school where he later worked as a teacher aide and in his own home and car, amongst others.

The face of the male can't be seen but the Crown told the jury they could infer it was Taimo - based on the fact the photo was on his phone, and that fabric seen in it was similar to distinctive bedding seen in police photographs of his home.

As well as hearing evidence given by complainants, the jury were shown a photograph of a boy sitting topless on Taimo's bed, stored in his cellphone called 'family and forever'.

In cross-examining Taimo, Mr Rhodes put to him that he must be the unluckiest man in the world, if he was to be believed.

The jury were also told about, but not shown, an explicit close-up photo of a young teenager performing a sex act on a man - also found on Mr Taimo's cellphone.

Taimo's defence was plainly put by Justice Moore in his summing up of the case.

The defence's case

"His defence is simple. It is a total denial. He says that each of the complainants

has lied about what happened to them. His defence is is that there is no room for mistake. This is not a question of the complainants being mistaken. "The issue here is whether each of the complainants told the truth in respect of the essential elements which make up each of the charges." Taimo took the stand to defend the allegations in week six. He was walked through his evidence by his lawyer Tua Saseve and his responses to the allegations of abuse were similar. Taimo will be sentenced on 14 December.

Recipe / Food

Jalebi 1. Put flour in a mixing bowl. 2. Add gramflour. 3. Mix well. 4. Add yogurt and water. 5. Mix well, using a spoon, ensuring that no lumps remain. 6. Mix to obtain what is technically called,"ribbon consistency". 7. (Ribbon consistency simply requires you to mix for about 5-7 minutes, really well, so that when the mixture is dropped from the mixing spoon into the mixing bowl, it should fall like a ribbon. Don't let the term scare you, it's pretty easy, you just got to). 8. Add a pinch of baking soda. 9. At this point, this mixture (batter) can be refrigerated if you are planning on making the jalebis later. 10. If you plan to make the jalebis instantly, put the mixture in a jalebi bottle (you get these bottles to make jalebis in the market).

• 1 cup all-purpose flour (known as 'maida' in Hindi) • 2 teaspoons gram flour (known as 'besan' in Hindi) • 1⁄2 cup plain yogurt, beaten (known as 'dahi' in Hindi) • 1⁄2 cup water • 1 pinch baking soda • 500ml ghee or 500 ml oil • 500ml sugar syrup 11. If you dont have a jalebi bottle, you can use an empty well-washed and thoroughly clean, tomato ketchup bottle. 12. If you got an icing bag, use that. 13. I used the icing bag with the"star" nozzle attachment. 14. You may experiment with the other nozzles, if you wish, but please dont, in any circumstances, try using the"writing" nozzle attachment, because if you do so, the jalebis that you'll be making will be the thinnest on the face of the planet, lol. 15. Heat oil on low-medium flame in a frying pan. 16. Meanwhile, spoon the above prepared batter in the icing bag fitted with the star nozzle/jalebi bottle/ tomato ketchup bottle. 17. Drop the batter by squeezing the bottle/icing bag, into the hot oil, in concentric circular motion to make the jalebis.

18. Lightly brown on either side. 19. Repeat until all the batter is used up. 20. On low flame heat the preprepared sugar-water syrup (known in Hindi as"chashni"). 21. Add few threads of saffron to the syrup- these look really pretty on the jalebis later when you dip the latter into them. 22. Now, drain the excess oil from the jalebis. 23. Drop into the sugar-water syrup. 24. Dip well, toss well, to coat the jalebis in the syrup. 25. Drain excess syrup from the jalebis. 26. Serve immediately or serve hot if you plan to serve them later on, make sure to warm them a bit in the oven (2-3 minutes) and then serve. 27. Get ready to put on your apron and go make more of these because they'll vanish before you know!

Spirituality Commentary on the Bhagavad-Gita - by Swami Krishnananda

Discourse 1: The Colophon of the Bhagavadgita Brahmavidyayam yogasastre srikrsnarjunasamvade. These words occur at the end of each chapter of the Bhagavad-Gita. Those who do not know Sanskrit might not have even noticed this. Those who know Sanskrit just take it for granted and bypass it as something that needs to be recited at the end of each chapter, whatever the reason may be. But there is no redundant word in the Bhagavad-Gita. There is nothing that can be bypassed or considered as introductory, just to be glossed over. Even if there is a well-known apostrophe—sribhagavan- uvaca—that also has a meaning by itself. What does the Bhagavad-Gita teach? It teaches three things: brahmavidyayam yogasastre srikrsnarjunasamvade. It is repeatedly dinned into our ears what the Gita teaches. The commentaries on the Gita say that it teaches karma yoga, raja yoga, bhakti yoga, jnana yoga, a synthesis of yoga, the art of living, and whatnot. But the Gita itself tells us what it teaches by a colophon, which is

in three words only: brahmavidyayam yogasastre srikrsnarjunasamvade. These three words mean theory, practice, and realisation. Brahma-vidya is the science of the Absolute—that system of thinking which is enabled to comprehend within itself at any time the total structure of things. To conceive the Absolute is to at once take into consideration, in our processes of thought, all things connected with the object of thought—not only the inner constituents of the object as such, but also the relations that the object bears to other objects. The reality of a thing is not only in itself; it is also in that which determines it, restricts it, influences it, conditions it, defines it, and makes it what it is. Every individual is an entity by itself. But this ‘being an entity by itself ’ is not so simple a matter as it appears on the surface. As human individuals, we appear to be totally isolated persons, and we stand by ourselves, unrelated to things outside. We can be in our own rooms, unnoticed and unconnected to things. But, we are not unconnected to things. The physical atmosphere,

the social atmosphere, the political atmosphere, and the psychological atmosphere determine us. So even if we are alone in our rooms, we do not forget that our individuality is conditioned by the presence of these laws of society, of government, of physical nature, and of the thoughts of people in general. Hence, our individuality is only a chimera, and total individuality by itself is not a possibility. Brahma-vidya is the art and the science of educating oneself in the manner of correctly perceiving the world as such, including one’s own self, in the totality of relations, so that no partial vision of things can be regarded as a passport to the concept of the Absolute. Mostly—or always, I may say—our perceptions are partial. They are limited to certain conditions. It is a condition related to a marketplace, a railway station, a bus stand, an office, a factory or a house. These are the things that limit our thoughts, but we do not rise above the apparent awkwardness of these conditions and go inside to the relationship of these things to other things.

Who can encounter the Absolute? Who can talk with God, unless we are flaming and blazing forth in the purity of our spirit as God Himself is? Unless we have transcended the limitations of flesh and bone and the limitations of the psyche which are conditioned socially, politically, etc., unless we are able to lift our consciousness above these limitations, how will we converse with God? Who can dare approach God, when there is no communicating medium between ourselves and God? The wavelength of our individuality and the wavelength of God are in such

Spirituality contrast that there is no mingling of these two factors. The radio station of God is sending messages. We are unable to receive any message from God because our receiving sets here have a very feeble wavelength and, therefore, no message is received. The Yoga Shastra, or the practice of yoga, is nothing but the tuning of the wavelength of our receiving sets to the wavelength of the message that comes from God’s broadcasting station. This is Yoga Shastra; and the purpose of this is to contact God directly. There is no use of thinking God, praying to God, feeling God, and imagining that one day we will realise God. It is necessary to confront Him every day, if it is true that He is present in every atom, as they say. In every atom He is vibrating, as the sun is vibrating in the solar system. If that is the case, He is to be contacted just now. God is a here and a now, and not an afterwards or a somewhere or a someone. He is without these limitations of the concept of space and time. Contact with God is contact with timelessness, with eternity, with just-ness, now-ness and here-ness. Such is the import of the final teaching of the Bhagavad-Gita, where the soul communes with God in its realisation of the perfection that it must achieve finally through the Yoga Shastra.

This is the practice of the discipline necessary in this world in the light of the knowledge of Brahma-vidya, which is the theoretical education that we receive of how the world is made, finally.

The Bhagavad-Gita is a Brahma-vidya, a Yoga Shastra, it is a theoretical understanding of the structure of the cosmos, the practice of yoga, and the daily contact with God in our practical affairs, which is true divine life.

Swami Krishnananda Saraswati was a disciple of Sivananda Saraswati and served as the General Secretary of the Divine Life Society in Rishikesh, India from 1958 until 2001.

Editorial Diwali

is the time to rejoice and introspect As we are getting ready to celebrate Diwali next week, this will kick start the festivities around Diwali. As Indian, we all are aware of the reasons behind celebrating Diwali and the message included in the celebration it, which is of joy, triumph of good over evil and that of light over darkness, brotherhood and cohesiveness. The good thing happening about this festival now is that as we the Indian diaspora going all over the globe are taking this festival and culture everywhere, hence now Diwali has got a universal recognition and acceptance. In New Zealand also, Diwali is now one of the biggest crowd pulling occasion and has become an opportunity to showcase our culture and heritage to the world. The five-day festival in India, which is celebrated every autumn in northern hemisphere, is the most popular Hindu festival. It is celebrated with different names in different parts of India. This festival falls on the darkest day of Hindu calendar on Kartik Amavasya, which illuminates those earthen lamps or diyas lit on this occasion and fills with sparkles. People clean their house, businesses places and decorate them, wear new cloths and worship Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth and Ganesh, the remover of all obstacles, on the day. The five-day festival has got a day for celebrating the most sacred brother and sister relation as well which is known as Bhai- dooj. For Hindus, the day after Diwali is also start of the new Hindu calendar year and making new start of business ventures and doing all auspicious things. Traditionally, in India people start their new accounts on this day, give bonuses to their employees, distribute sweets to their friends, family members and seek blessings of their elders. These days it is customary to decorate the shops, business places and markets in India and lots of prizes given to shops and markets based on their quality of decorations. The other branches of Hinduism like Jains, Buddhist and Sikhs also celebrate Diwali or Deepavali with different names and with different reason. Jains believe that on this day the Lord Mahavir attained Nirvana or left his physical body, so they celebrate this day as Nirvana Diwas and lit the lights on this day in remembrance of Lord Mahavira. Buddhist do not celebrate Diwali as festival, but they pray on this day to get rid of worldly worries and possessions except for some Buddhist in part of Nepal do celebrate Diwali the same way as we do in India, by praying to Laxmi and Ganesh. Sikhs do celebrate Diwali and call it Bandi Chor Diwas as a mark of celebration as on this day Guru Hargobind ji was released from Gwalior Fort jail by the Mughal Emperor Jehangir. But in Sikhism Diwali is being celebrated even much before Guru Hargobind ji and is celebrated as occasion of joy and happiness. Traditionally, also the occasion of Diwali is the biggest time of the year for all the businesses in India just like the Christmas time in western world. Pretty much everyone according to their capacity would buy cloths, utensils, new furniture, jewellery, sweets and other gifts for themselves and to gift to their families and friends. In todays time just like any other festival, Diwali has been acquiring more of economic consideration than religious or spiritual, but things do change with changing time. Today the festival of Diwali has got a recognition worldwide, beyond its religious boundaries and is recognised and celebrated by UN and today Diwali is celebrated in many Parliaments of the different countries around the world. I, on behalf of The Indian News, wish everyone a very happy and prosperous Diwali. - Yugal Parashar

Here are some must visit spiritual destinations in India Every year hundreds of devotees flock to explore the holy destination seeking inner peace. The peaceful environment and sacred religious sites helps people to discover their spiritual self. Confirmtkt, the train discovery and booking app and Travelyaari, the leading bus ticketing platform shares an insight on the must visit spiritual destinations in India:

Golden temple The exquisite Golden Temple attracts pilgrims from all over the world, it is not only a central religious place of the Sikhs, but also a symbol of human brotherhood and equality. While the temple complex is lined with copper and marble, the shrine within was laid with actual gold foil by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the year 1830. It looks particularly arresting at night when it's beautifully lit up, with its imposing pure gold dome illuminated. The temple feeds a vegetarian meal to over 100,000 people a day regardless of race, religion and class.

Konark Temple The Konark Sun Temple takes the form of a huge chariot for the sun god Surya, with 12 pairs of stone-carved wheels and a team of seven galloping horses. The temple also symbolizes the passage of time, which is under the sun god's control. The temple is known for the exquisite stone carvings that cover the entire structure.

Tirupati Temple The deity here is popularly known as Lord Balaji popularly, and is believed to be the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Tirupati Balaji Temple welcomes its devotees with mesmerizing grandeur and soothing and calm surroundings at the same time. The town seems to be blessed with an incomparable aura of piousness and spirituality. Its majestic appearance and architectural beauty captivate every visitor.

Rishikesh Rishikesh lures those seeking knowledge and peace with its numerous ashrams and yoga institutes. It's particularly popular with spiritual seeking foreigners, while Haridwar holds more significance for Hindu pilgrims. Because of their close proximity, many people come to Rishikesh and Haridwar in the same visit.

Varanasi Ganga Aarti is a spectacular ceremony that takes place every day at the Dashashwamedh Ghat which is to thank and praise the river. The beautifully synchronized aarti here is a choreographed performance that is our spiritual version of Broadway. The fascinating thing about this mystical city is that its rituals are revealed openly along the many riverside ghats.

Ajmer Sharif Dargah It is among the most popular places to see in the country and a preferred pilgrimage destination. It is believed that everyone who visits the Dargah is blessed and their desires get fulfilled. The most overwhelming sight is to see people from diverse religions bowing to the Almighty under one roof.

Beyond the Lights and Colours Diwali is an Indian festival that needs no introduction anywhere in the world. It is celebrated everywhere in the world where Hindus live. Today as a result of immigrants taking their culture to the outside world and building temples and celebrating festivals most countries recognise the ‘Festival of Lights’. These festivals have helped attract the attention of normal society and take interest in the Hindu spiritual ways. There is now a growing population that classify themselves as Hindus in countries outside of India. We also hear names of big Hollywood stars who have become vegetarians and are learning to live simpler lives and incorporating praying and worship in their daily lives.

horse to give his child a ride on his back. Similarly, the lord personally comes to reciprocate with them, to protect them and destroy those that oppose them. 2) He came to establish principles of religion: Lord Ram was called Purushottam for his upholding of values and principles and he showed what we needed to do by his own behaviour. In the Dwapar-yuga people were more intelligent, they learnt by seeing and copying the behaviour of the ideal leader. Hence, the civilisation at that time were more God conscious and happy. The population of Kali-yuga is less intelligent and surrounded by miseries. For them Lord Krishna personally descended to

darkness and Diwali would be more of a commercial event as opposed to one of spiritual reflections. We should serve the devotees of the Lord as pleasing the devotees pleases the Lord himself.

4) He came to give his devotees opportunity to glorify him: As a result of his incarnation we have the story of Ramayana. Just by hearing or speaking of the glories of Ramayana we can gain so much spiritual benefit. Two of the nine processes of Bhakti that can award Mukti or freedom from cycle of birth and death is Shravanam (Listening to glories of Lord) and Kirtanam (speaking Lords glories).

So, let us make this festival of Diwali a little different this time. Instead of acquiring new clothes, let us acquire some new books that will help dress our conscience with new spiritual realisations that will remain ever fresh. Instead of exchanging sweets let us exchange some realisations of the presence of Lord Ram in your life. The realisations, I am sure will be sweeter than sweets and will have a guaranteed

positive impact on your health and wealth. Let us assess our current direction and align ourselves with our spiritual goals. Even small steps on this path will help provide a better cultural identification and spiritual anchoring for you and your family.

Individuals around the world are becoming more aware of their spiritual identity having a human body experience. They are now seeing the truth about the principles of Karma and reincarnation. As Hindus settled abroad, how has our family’s cultural knowledge and spiritual progress been affected? What is Diwali about? And what can we learn from Lord Ram? The short version is that we celebrate Diwali to welcome Lord Ram back to Ayodhya from exile after killing Ravan and rescuing his wife Sita. A story of victory over evil and light over darkness. However, that is not all we can we learn from Ramayana. What was the true purpose of the penning the epic by Valmiki rishi? Lord Ram incarnates on earth not for the purpose of destruction of evil alone. He comes from many reasons that we should know about. The following is a summary of the lesser discussed reasons of Lord Ram’s incarnation that will provide some valuable insights to take home. 1) He came to protect his devotees from forces of evil: To protect the demigods form the demon king Ravan who was terrorising the world, Lord Ram incarnates himself with his entourage. He protects surrendered souls like Sugriva and Vibhishana and at the same time awards them with wealth and fame. From time to time evil forces become powerful and Lord then takes the opportunity to come himself to destroy them. It is not that this cannot be done by his mere glance. The mood is that of extreme love and affection. The Lord personally wants to reciprocate with his devotees to give them joy and strength in their faith. As a mother out of love personally wants make food for her child or a father becomes a

provide detailed instructions and hence the Bhagvad Gita was spoken for people to read and adopt in their life. We must daily read at least one shloka from the Gita to understand our purpose of life. 3) He came to give his devotees the opportunity to serve him: Hanuman the greatest devotee of Lord Ram served his Lord in so many ways. In the Ramayana there is the inspiring story of the boat man (Kevat), who would not pass by the opportunity of personally washing the feet of Lord Ram. Vibhishana the younger brother of Lord Ram was suffered infamy for the sake of opportunity to serve Lord

We must take interest in singing or hearing or watching Lord’s pastimes. It is the easiest way to make spiritual progress. 5) He came to glorify his devotees: If there was no Ramayana we may not have heard of the great devotee Hanuman. The story of Laxman and Bharat are inspirations for aspiring devotees and provide great ideals in family life. The story of Sita and her unflinching faith and chastity has been inspiration to generations of women. Without such beacons to light the devotional path we would be lost in

During Laxmi puja remember Goddess Laxmi is very fickle by nature and does not stay anywhere too long. But if you have her husband in your house and heart, she is unlikely to leave. On this note a Very Happy and Prosperous Diwali to you and your family.

The history behind

Deepavali - Ravinder Grover

Deepavali, “Array of Lights" symbolizes the victory of brightness over darkness; its most significant esoteric meaning is "The Awareness of the Inner Light”. The five days festival commences with ‘Dhan-Teras’ (13th Krishna Paksha, Ashvin maas) and ends on ‘Bhaiduj’ (2nd Shukla Paksha, Kartika maas). The main day of celebration varies regionally which involves fireworks, lights, flowers, sharing sweets, and worship to symbolize hope and restoration. Some use this occasion to strengthen family and social relationships.

Origin of Deepavali - Mythology Despite the regional variations, the essence is the same that marks “the victory of good over evil” to rejoice in the Inner Light (Atma) which is the underlying reality of all things. • Sri Rama's coronation took place after his victorious return to Ayodhya from Lanka vanquishing Ravana and his brood. In the absence of the effulgent Rama, Ayodhya was a city of darkness. The return of Rama was hailed by the people of Ayodhya as the return of divine effulgence and hence they celebrated the event by the lighting of lamps everywhere, hence named Deepavali.

• Thousands of years ago there was a planet called Naraka which appeared to be approaching close to the earth. People were filled with dread of the approaching catastrophe, hence prayed to Lord Krishna for averting the imminent disaster and to save them. Krishna used His Prajna (extraordinary knowledge) to destroy Naraka. This extraordinary knowledge of Krishna was termed Sathya. i.e., Krishna destroyed Naraka in association with Sathya. The residents of the world started celebrating that day with lighting of lamps and adoring the Lord who saved them. That day of the Lord's triumph was celebrated as a festive occasion as Deepavali too.

Moon Day). Krishna freed 16,000 women from prison and asked them to go back to their respective homes. But all the Gopikas fell at Krishna's feet and pleaded that it would not be possible for them to live in dignity in their old homes after having been prisoners of Narakasura, and they would prefer to end their lives at His feet rather than to go back. "You are the Protector of the Universe; can't you protect us?" they pleaded. Krishna agreed to protect them. Because of the pledge He gave to them that He would bear the responsibility for protecting them, He was called their Bharta (Supporter). This has been wrongly interpreted as meaning that He was their husband. It is a libel on Krishna to say that He married 16,000 Gopikas. • Deepavali is the day when Lord in His Vamana incarnation sent the Emperor Bali to the Nether World after He had got the promise of three feet of ground (measured by the Lord's foot) from Bali. Vamana (as the incarnation of Vishnu) used the gift of three feet of land to put down the Ahamkara (egoism) of Bali. Bali is described as Chakravarthi (sovereign lord). • Deepavali was the day on which

Inner Meaning of Deepavali The Vedic Prayer, “Thamasoma Jyotir Gamaya” (Lead me from Darkness to Light) means light is needed where there is darkness. What is this darkness? Sorrow is one form of darkness. Loss of Peace is another. Disappointment is one form of darkness. Misery is yet another. Lack of enthusiasm is another. All these are different forms of darkness. To get rid of the darkness of sorrow, you have to Light the Lamp of happiness. To dispel the darkness of disease, you have to install the light of health. To get over the darkness of losses and failures, you have to usher in the light of prosperity. Deepavali is a festival which is designed to celebrate the suppression of the Ego by the Higher Self. Man is plunged in darkness of ignorance and has lost the power of discrimination between the permanent and the transient. When the darkness of ignorance caused by Ahamkara (ego) is dispelled by the light of Divine knowledge, the effulgence of the Divine is experienced. Lead me from the blindness of ignorance into the vision of the Truth. Cleanse the mind and the Truth will be reflected therein. There is something beyond the physical

• Another version, Narakasura imprisoned thousands of princesses and tortured innumerable women. Unable to bear these indignities, the women appealed to Krishna for help. As Narakasura had inflicted sufferings on women, he had to be punished by a woman. For this reason, Krishna took Sathyabhama with Him and destroyed him in battle. Deepavali celebrates the victory of Krishna over Narakasura. It is also known as Naraka Chaturdashi. The following day is Amavasya (New Emperor Vikramaditya ascended the throne. • As per Skanda Purana, the Goddess Shakti observed 21 days of austerity starting from Ashtami of Shukla Paksha (8th day of the waxing moon) to get half of the body of Lord Shiva. This Vrata (vow) of austerity is known as ‘Kedhara Vrata’. Deepavali is the completion day of this austerity. This is the day Lord Shiva accepted Shakti into the left half of the form and appeared as Ardhanarishvara.

body and mind which is pure, infinite, and eternal, called the Atma. Just as we celebrate the birth of our physical being, Deepavali is the celebration of this Inner Light, the knowing of which outshines all darkness (removes all obstacles and dispels all ignorance), awakening the individual to one's true nature, not as the body, but as the unchanging, infinite, immanent and transcendent reality. With the realization of the Atma, come universal compassion, love, and the awareness of the oneness of all things (higher knowledge) that brings Ananda (Bliss).

How to Light the Inner Lamp?

How to observe Deepavali?

To remove the Outside darkness, one needs to light a lamp that needs four elements; Container, Oil, Wick and a Matchbox. To remove the Inner Darkness, one needs to light Jnana Jyoti (Light of Wisdom) which also needs four elements; Heart as container, Ekaagrata (Mind with one-pointed concentration) as Wick, Bhakti (Love for God) as Oil and Vairagya (Renunciation) as Matchbox. With these four, Atma Jyoti (Divine Flame of the Spirit) shines effulgently. When Atma Jyoti is aflame, the Jnana Jyoti appears and dispels the Inner darkness.

Deepavali has to be observed as a day for getting rid of all the bad qualities in us. When the six foes of man (kama, krodha, lobha, moha, mada and matsarya) which drag him towards a fall, are overpowered, then the flame of wisdom can shine clear and bright. It is in order to demonstrate this on the Deepavali day, lamps are lit and arranged in every house, dispelling darkness which is the home of evil and vice.

of ignorance. The lamp is not merely the symbol of the knowledge to Truth. It is also the symbol of the One, the Atma that shines in and through all this multiplicity. Just as with one lamp, a thousand lamps can be lit and the One is as bright as ever in spite of the

May the supreme Light of Lights enlighten your understanding! May you all attain the inexhaustible spiritual wealth of the Self ! Sparkles of Light that Enlighten us Within Deepavali occurs on a new moon day when it is approaching the longest spell of dark night during the southern solstice in the northern hemisphere. Thus it is an apt time to shed the darkness by lighting lamps inside and outside our homes. It is an ideal time to kindle those principles within us that can bring a significant difference to the way we live. Traditional practices provide us with a subtle wakeup call and pulls ourselves together quickly to face reality without fear. The message that Deepavali (rows of lights) holds is phenomenal - “Kindle the spirit of enthusiasm and strength within your heart even while going through the darkest moments of your life”. Stress, fear and anxiety are becoming part and parcel of our lives and it is disheartening to note that mental health issues have increased. The current competitive environment is compelling individuals to strive for high achievements and financial power as a form of success. As a result we are loaded with more activity in the part of the brain that regulates stress and we are prone to high risk of mental disorders. In the internet age, another serious issue the lack of human interaction and companionship leading to an unrealistic view of the world. Some experts have developed a new term, “Facebook depression”. A recent study on this area states – “it is not clear if internet overuse leads to depression or if depressed people are more likely to use the internet”. Another surprising contributor to stress is the sheer number of choices people are confronted with every day. With the preconception that a small decision can potentially be a catalyst for a large, influential outcome, people hesitate over small decisions in life such as ‘which breakfast cereal should I buy?’ or ‘what t-shirt should I wear?’. This is notably predominant with people who are uncertain about the information they receive or have little direction in life. With so much physical, psychological and intellectual conditioning, how are we going to discover the unconditional inner strength? There is no point of keeping ourselves busy through

activities to distract our mind or to have a sense of success. We cannot afford to overlook and ignore the significance of lights portrayed through the legends. Ravana was an epitome of an insatiable thirst for power, success, greed and lust. His life became full of exploitations crossing all boundaries in extreme measures. In spite of his great knowledge and skill which allowed him to control the external world around him, he failed to discover the beauty and sense of security within. He chose to chase power over the external world and felt the obsessive need to compel everybody to meet his expectations. Lord Rama brought down that destructive power, and conquering that egomania through the strength within became a matter of celebration for everybody. This teaches us to lead a lifestyle in keeping with the purpose of life. We need to realize that the inner feeling of security has nothing to do with having control over external situations, but is irrespective of any external situation or experience. We need to find a way out of our self imposed prison of strong personal likes and dislikes. We need to be flexible enough to be open to new experiences in life, whilst understanding that our experiences need not be in keeping with our expectations. May we have unflinching will power to bring change that is necessary. But over the situations that cannot be altered, may we develop the strength to accept them gracefully without remorse and hurt. The legend of Deepavali is interpreted differently throughout the country. Nevertheless the spirit behind the celebration of Deepavali is the same. 1. According to one interpretation, on Deepavali day Sri Rama’s coronation took place after he victoriously vanquished Ravana from Lanka and returned to Ayodhya. This was marked by lighting lamps throughout the city. 2. This is the day on which the Lord in His Vamana incarnation sent the

Emperor Vali to the Nether-World after He was given domain over anything He could cover in three footsteps.

5. According to the Skanda Purana, the Goddess Sakti observed 21 days of austerity.

3. Naraka chaturdasi describes the episode of Narakasura ruling the city of Pragjyotisapura. This titan of hell made life impossible for those on Earth and in other celestial regions. Finally Lord Krishna vanquished the demon.

Cultural practices:People wake up before sunrise and have an oil bath and wear new clothes. Houses are illuminated with rows of lamps in the evening followed by good food, festivities, and fireworks. On this day people visit friends and families with sweets and presents.

4. Deepavali is celebrated for five days in some parts of India, each having its own significance based on rituals and myths. On the first day Lord Dhanvanthara is worshiped. The 2nd day is celebrated as Naraka chaturdasi. On the 3rd day Lakshmi is worshipped. The 4th day is celebrated as New Year, and the 5th day is observed as a symbol of love between sisters and brothers.

Thus Deepavali highlights the true inner strength within us and the knowledge to enjoy a cheerful mind and celebrate the living with family members, friends, relatives and those around us. I take this opportunity to wish everybody ‘Happy Deepavali’ from Sri Veda Vidya Pitham.

GULAB JAMUN MAKES 20- 24

Davinder Singh Head Chef - Sudima Auckland Airport Davinder Singh has worked at Sudima Auckland Airport since 2011. He shares some of the recipes he has developed with his team for Diwali.

PARIPPU PAYASAM SERVES 4

Ingredients: 100 gram khoya (firmly packed)

2 tbsp milk (mixed with a little water)

1 tbsp refined flour or semolina

4 green cardamoms (slightly crushed)

1/4 tsp baking soda

Ghee (enough to fill a pan & deep fry)

2 cups cugar 2 cups water

1 slice of bread (cubed)

Directions 1.

With the heel of your palm or the base of a flat metal bowl, knead the khoya until smooth & firm.

2.

Add in the flour and baking soda and knead into dough. You can use a food processor if you wish.

3.

4.

8.

Fry the rest in batches and place in a tray to cool.

Ingredients:

9.

200g cherupayar parippu (moong dal)

1 cup of hot water

The dough should be firm and pliable and not dry. If it does feel dry, wet your hands and work the dough a bit more.

In another saucepan, mix the sugar and water and place over low heat until the sugar dissolves. Once the sugar has dissolved, increase the heat to bring the mixture to a steady boil.

400g jaggery

3 tbsp ghee

Roll the dough into round marble-sized balls (jamuns) so that they are smooth and creaseless.

10. Add the milk to the mixture and continue boiling on a high heat until the syrup thickens (skim off any scum that collects on the sides of the pan).

5 ½ cups coconut milk

50g chopped cashew nuts

4 cups light coconut milk

50g coconut pieces

5.

Heat the ghee in a wide saucepan. Place a small piece of dough in the ghee. If the dough quickly rises to the surface, the ghee is ready.

11.

6.

Lower the heat and fry a cube of bread till light golden brown and remove (this helps to lower the temperature of the ghee).

12. Once cooled, strain syrup through a fine nylon sieve or muslin cloth.

7.

Add as many jamuns as you can into the pan without overcrowding. Fry until golden brown. Drain the jamuns out of the ghee.

Once thickened, add cardamom and allow to boil for a few more minutes before taking off heat and allowing to cool for at least 30 minutes.

Fry the parippu (moong dal) in a dry saucepan without oil for 5-6 minutes. Add the boiled water and cook until dal is soft.

13. Add the gulab jamuns and allow them to ‘soak’ in the syrup for at least 30 minutes.

2.

Melt the jaggery in hot water. Add this to the cooked parippu & stir well on a medium-high heat.

14. Serve 2-3 in bowls and garnish with chopped nuts and edible silver (optional).

3.

Add 2 tbsp of ghee and mix.

4.

Add the light coconut milk and allow mixture to come to a boil.

5.

Then add the coconut milk and stir on heat until mixture reduces by half.

Directions

5 strands of saffron 75g rice powder ½ tsp green cardamom powder 25g each of chopped pistachios & almonds

Directions 1.

KESARI PHIRNI SERVES 4

Ingredients: 1 litre milk 1 cup sugar 50g basmati rice (pre-soaked for a few hours in water) 5 drops rose water

1 litre of boiled water

1.

In a saucepan, bring the milk to a boil. Then lower the heat and simmer until it is reduced by half.

6.

2.

Grind the pre-soaked rice to a coarse paste. Add a little milk to make it little thinner.

Stir well for an additional 5 minutes and remove from heat.

7.

3.

Then add sugar to the simmering milk and keep on the heat until dissolved.

In a small fry pan, heat the remaining ghee until hot and fry the cashew nuts and coconut pieces.

4.

Add the rice paste to the milk and stir continuously as it thickens.

8.

Serve the payasam in individual bowls, garnish with fried cashews and coconut pieces.

5.

Then add the cardamom powder and rose water.

6.

Remove from heat and allow to cool before placing in refrigerator for about 3 - 4 hours.

7.

Garnish with chopped nuts, edible silver (optional), saffron and serve.

Dussehra: As diverse as India

In a country as diverse as India, it is a given really that different regions will have their own adaptations for celebrating Dussehra, the festival marking good over evil. Dussehra is majorly celebrated across India, marking the end of the nineday Durga Puja. Although the essence of the occasion remains unchanged throughout, there are different ways different parts celebrate the festival. Some parts of the country celebrate the day to mark the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, which is widely regarded as Dussehra. Prevalent in the north and north western states, Dussehra is celebrated by conducting pujas and plays of the events of the Ramayana over the nineday Navaratri and burning effigies of Ravana, Kumbhkaran and Meghnad along with fireworks on the tenth day to commemorate the destruction of evil. Evil as he was, however, Ravana was also hailed as an accomplished priest, scholar and a devout follower of Hindu god Shiva. Tales in various Hindu scriptures account his immense powers to boons granted to him by Shiva himself. A temple, Dashanan, in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur is dedicated to Ravana. It is the only temple dedicated to Ravana across India. As part of the Dussehra festivities, Dashanan temple remembers and celebrates the demon king's virtues. Speaking to ANI, the temple priest Prabhakar said, "It is believed that today is the birth as well as the death anniversary of Ravana. In the morning we do pujas to mark his birth anniversary and his accomplishments as a scholar. In the evening, we burn an effigy which represents the egoistic Ravana and conduct another puja, following which the temple is shut for the rest of the year." While Dussehra marks Lord Rama's slaying of Ravana, Vijaydashami, prevalent in eastern and southern parts of India, marks the victory of goddess Durga over the invincible buffalo demon, Mahishasura. According to legend, Mahishasura had declared war on the gods, who were defenseless as the demon was granted a boon that he could not be killed by a man or a god. This led to the gods invoking goddess Durga, who, after nine days of battle, killed Mahishasur on Vijaydashami. The festival is the highlight of the

year for the state of West Bengal, or any Bengali in general, reflecting the importance of the occasion for the people. Following pujas and other traditional practices over the fiveday long Durga Puja and prior to the immersion of the idol as part of the 'Ghot Bisharjon', Vijayadashami is marked with women participating in 'Sindoor Khela', which involves women applying vermilion (Sindoor) on each other after applying Sindoor on the Goddess' feet and forehead and feeding her with sweets and betel leaves. Women in Ranchi, Delhi, Kolkata and other parts of the country were seen participating in the 'Sindoor Khela' and the 'dhunuchi' dance, a traditional dance form involving the use of an earthen incense burner.

Although traditionally only married women participated in this event, a number of puja committees have in recent times opened the doors for unmarried women, widows, transgender and sex workers to take part in the 'Sindoor Khela' and bid farewell to Goddess Durga. Similarly, Vijayadashami is celebrated with much fervour in South India as well. Goddess Durga is also referred to as Chamundeshwari in these parts, with the city of Mysuru in Karnataka, which derives its name from the demon Mahishasur, being at the centre of the celebrations. Karnataka Chief Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy got the grand proceedings underway, which began at the Balarama gate of the Mysuru Palace.

A number of cultural troupes, decorated elephants, tableaus, depicting scenes from the legend, and a 750 kg Golden Howdah, which contains an idol of the goddess Chamundeshwari and has been carried by the elephant Arjuna since 2012, are all part of the 'Dasara' extravaganza here in Mysuru. Over 40,000 people had reportedly gathered around the palace to witness the procession. Varied as the celebrations may be, the message from the festival remains one victory of good over evil. From burning of giant effigies, Ramayana plays, 'sindoor khela', and glorious carnivals, Dussehra is just another Indian festival that exhibits the country's incredible diversity.

Tips to Manage Bank Account in India Most NRIs, maintain many types of Accounts in Banks in India before they move overseas. Some convert these accounts in to NRO accounts after settling abroad, but most accounts continue to be operated as Resident accounts. Over a period of time, some of these bank accounts become inoperative, dormant and some with small balances even get closed with application of periodic bank charges.

Also keep in mind that most NRI loans are usually required to be repaid by remittances from abroad. 9. Submit Form 15G/15H, in April each year, if you don’t want the bank to deduct the tax at source on your interest income in case your total income in India doesn’t exceed the exempted limit. However for senior citizens having interest income from bank deposits up to INR 50000.00 there is no need to submit this form. Last but not the least; if you are a NRI having a non resident tax status in India, it is advisable to convert all your resident accounts in to Non Resident Ordinary accounts to comply with the India’s Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999. Although there is no time limit prescribed for this conversion of accounts, but still it is desirable to do so, as soon as possible, after one settles abroad and becomes a non-resident Indian.

Festival Durga Pooja: The idol that is never immersed Durga Pooja is the most anticipated festival in West Bengal, one of the many reasons for the wait is the grandeur that it brings along. The festival which is celebrated over a span of at least five days witnesses the city of Kolkata at its best - adorned with lights and Pandals which often have a message to convey. Over the years, theme-based pandals have been the talking point in Kolkata. The Pandals draw inspiration from many aspects ranging from politics to social issues. However, what is losing its essence is the traditional Durga Pooja. The divide between the traditional Pooja and the modern theme-based Pooja becomes distinct if one takes a round of the pandals in the southern part of the city, and moves to the north, which is known for clutching on to the rituals and the traditions of the Pooja. One such Durga Pooja can be witnessed in the Haldar household in North Kolkata's Baghbazaar area. What makes Haldar pooja stand out is the fact that this is the only place where the idol of Durga is never immersed and is worshipped all-round the year. The history attached to the Haldar Durga Pooja is rich and intriguing. The idol is said to be almost 1000 years old and was found 14 feet under the ground by one of the Haldar forefathers somewhere in Odisha and is known to have survived

the Mughal era.

to worship her daily."

The Idol has been since worshipped by the Haldars for more than 400 years, since the excavation. The idol at Haldarbari is made of "Kasthipathar" (Philosopher's Stone) instead of clay.

Following the divine order, the excavation was carried out and the idol of Devi Durga was recovered in perfect condition, unlike many other idols of that time.

Regarding the excavation of the idol, Dr. Partha Sarathi, the eldest grandson of the Haldar Household said, "One of the forefathers of the Haldar family went for a trip to a palace named Sahebpur located near Balasore of Odisha. During his stay, some of the people who accompanied him dreamt of a Goddess instructing them to excavate her idol buried about 14 feet deep beneath the earth inside the house of a Muslim fisherman. The Goddess also instructed

Similar idols can be seen at British Museum, Chandannagar Museum and Institute as well as the Kolkata Museum, however, those idols are not in an unscathed condition. Debasis Haldar, one of the eldest members of the household recalled some of the legends associated with the Pooja. One of them is regarding the recovery of a Navaratna (Nine Gems) amulet which has been with the household since ages. "There is

a Nabaratna Amulet at the Halder residence which is used during worship of the Goddess. It is sometimes kept under the feet of the Goddess and sometimes in the offering container ( Barandala ) of the Goddess. After the untimely demise of one of the family members, it was decided to sell off the amulet. The amulet was then sold. However, after three days the man who bought the amulet came back to return the amulet saying that he received a divine message from the Goddess in his dream to return the amulet. The gentleman handed it back and even refused to take the money that he paid for it," he said. Scores of people pour in every year to witness the rituals and offer prayers to the Goddess Durga in Hakderbari. The 'Sondhi' Pooja of the Halder household, which takes place on Ashtami, is one of the major attractions for many. On this day, the "Durga Dalan" or the Corridor is elaborately decorated with 108 lotus flowers and an equal number of lamps. The members of the family said that the design for the arrangement of the 108 lamps is conveyed to the eldest member through divine intervention. The celebrations end with Sindur Khela on the day of Maha Dashami, after which the idol is placed facing the West for daily worship.

Hindu, Jewish community to celebrate Diwali, Chanukah together in Chicago The Hindu and the Jewish community are set to organise a joint celebration of Diwali and Chanukah as the "Festival of Lights" in the Chicago city on November 18. Both the festivals have different historical contexts but signify the same essence. The Consul General of both India and Israel will attend the event, which will mark as a symbol of love and tolerance, mutual respect and brotherhood. The celebration will also mark as a tribute to the spirit of Swami Vivekananda's belief in respect for and understanding of other religions. Chanukah commemorates the Jewish uprising against the Greek-Syrian kingdom, which tried to force its culture on Jews and desecrated the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. Despite all odds, Jews rededicated the temple. They found only enough oil to light the temple for one day, but the light miraculously lasted eight days. Since then, the festival is observed for eight nights and days in the month of November or December by lighting the candles of a candelabrum. Similarly, Hindu festival Diwali is celebrated to mark the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. During the celebration, temples, homes, shops and office buildings are brightly illuminated.

Seychelles Geography

This is a place where the warm turquoise and aquamarine waters of the Indian Ocean present a vivid contrast as they gently lap up on the soft white sandy beaches set against a backdrop of totally unspoilt natural beauty. The beaches of the Seychelles have been described as being the most beautiful in the world and few people would disagree. It is hardly surprising therefore that these islands are also sometimes referred to as the Paradise Islands. For many travellers, the beaches alone would put the Seychelles high on any “Places to Visit” list but these islands have much more to offer.

Seychelles Location

The islands have a total land area of 455 sq km and the islands fall into two distinct types. The largest islands are formed from granite which is unusual and the granitic islands of the Seychelles are the oldest midoceanic granite islands in the world. 41 of the islands are of granite including the main island of Mahé which is also the location of the Seychelles capital, Victoria and the Seychelles International Airport (code SEZ). The granitic islands are generally considered to form the cultural and economic hub of the nation and, being the homes of those beaches of legendary beauty, tend to be the main centre of the tourism industry. In this part of the world, conditions are ideal for coral growth and 74 islands are of coral, normally being in the form of lowlying reefs and atolls. The main islands are classified as being “tropical rain forest” and they are heavily forested but in some areas human intervention in the form of spice and coconut plantations has altered the natural ecosystems to some extent.

Seychelles People and Society There are many great things about the Seychelles but perhaps the greatest are the Seychellois people. These islands have no indigenous population meaning that everyone has links to another part of the world. In addition to the British

Travel is moderated by marine influences and the temperature rarely strays from the 24 to 32 degrees Celsius range. Weather is generally calm and, with the exception of the most remote southern islands, the Seychelles lie outside the usual cyclone belt but a major cyclone did hit in 2013 causing extensive damage. This is usually blamed on the changing weather patterns associated with global climate change. May to October tends to be the driest and coolest (relatively) with fresh winds of 19 to 37 km/hr. There is little rainfall at this time often with prolonged dry spells. December to April brings the highest temperatures accompanied by high levels of humidity, making the prospect of a dip in the sea even more attractive.

Diwali bonanza for Cine Lovers Diwali- the biggest festival of India is upon us. The period of Diwali is also considered as an attractive window by the Hindi film industry to release their big ticket projects. Every year highly anticipated films release during this period, when holidays abound and people are in a mood to celebrate. Diwali 2018 promises to be a bonanza for cine lovers, with one of the biggest films ever to be made in Bollywood – Thugs of Hindostan set to release worldwide on the 8th of November. It top lines two megastars in Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan. Incidentally it is for the first time in both their long and illustrious cinema careers, that they share screen space together. Many a film had been planned with them in the past, but never saw the light of the day. Thugs will be a novel experience for cine goers on this front. Katrina Kaif is paired for the second time with Aamir after Dhoom 3 in this fantasy adventure. Thugs also reunites Aamir with his on screen daughter in Dangal, Fatima Shaikh. Produced by the premier Yash Raj Films (YRF), Thugs of Hindostan is one of the rare Hindi films to delve into the fantasy, action –adventure genre. It has been a popular theme for Hollywood where films like Pirates of Caribbean and Hobbit have been big money spinners. Contrast that with Bollywood, and the only two films that immediately spring

to mind are Drona and Ajooba (coincidentally starring Abhishek and Amitabh Bachchan respectively). Director Vijay Krishna Acharya would have seen a gap in the market for such well mounted films which have appeal across age groups. The challenge though for makers when attempting films heavy on visual effects and delving into make believe pre historic worlds, are the inevitable comparisons with their counterparts in the west. Today’s generation has access to content from across the world on their fingertips. A Hindi film has to balance content with technique and style when it attempts a film in this space, or a discerning audience can be unforgiving. Thugs has been shot in Malta and YRF set up an elaborate visual effects department especially for it- good omens for the film. 2018 so far has been an outstanding year for Bollywood. On one hand the period drama Padmavat and the Sanjay Dutt biopic Sanju broke all box office records, on the other small budget films with strong content like Raazi and Stree made big numbers at the ticket window. Thugs of Hindostan has the potential to be a huge success. The film has been an exciting proposition right since its announcement. If only now the content can match the hype – Bollywood has a winner on hand. - APURV SHUKLA

Paula Abdul falls off stage during performance Hollywood star Paula Abdul had a great fall off the stage during her ongoing ‘Straight up’ musical tour.

announce wedding date

Yes they are getting married! Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh have confirmed that they are tying the knot, and have even announced the wedding dates. After repeatedly dodging the rumors of their wedding, the couple, or shall we say the 'to-be bride and groom' shared the news of their wedding with their fans with an Instagram post. "With the blessings of our families, it gives us immense joy in sharing that our wedding is set to take place on the 14th and 15th of November, 2018", reads the post. The announcement further adds, "We thank you for all the love you have showered upon us over the years and seek your blessings as we embark on this incredible journey of love, loyalty, friendship and togetherness." "Lots of love, Deepika and Ranveer," the couple signs off the announcement. Bollywood's 'Bajirao' and 'Mastani' have been inseparable since Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Goliyon Ki Raasleela' that was released in 2013.

The duo, so far, had always maintained silence over their relationship. While they never openly confirmed their romance, there was enough display of affection for people to make out that the two were indeed the love birds.

Following the #MeToo movement, Anu Malik was recently accused of sexual harassment by Shweta Pandit and Sona

The movement gained momentum in India after Bollywood actor Tanushree Dutta accused Nata Patekar of allegedly misbehaving with her during a film shoot in 2008. Since then, scores of women have come out to speak about their ordeals on social media, including actors, musicians, journalists, and politicians. Over the last month, women have leveled allegations of sexual misconduct against Subhash Ghai, Alok Nath, Vikas Bahl, Kailash Kher, Chetan Bhagat, Sajid Khan, and Varun Grover, among others.

Bollywood actor John Abraham, who is all set to don the cop's hat in Nikkhil Advani's 'Batla House', has finally started shooting for the upcoming thriller drama. Technology Elon Musk eyes early 2019 release for Tesla's custom AI chip ‘Hardware 3’ could be with us in six months, according to CEO Elon Musk has announced that Tesla’s new custom AI chip is about six months away from being installed in new production cars. The CEO said that the chip, which was confirmed as being in development last December, will offer “somewhere between [a] 500% & 2000%” increase in its vehicle’s autonomous driving performance. Existing Tesla owners who have already paid for full self-driving will be offered this “hardware 3” update for Autopilot free of charge.

The announcement comes as v9 of Tesla’s onboard software has already reportedly brought big improvements to its neural network with a unified camera network that more seamlessly integrates all eight of the car’s cameras. Musk has suggested that this software update delivered an approximate 400 percent increase in its capabilities. Tesla began developing its own hardware after it split with its previous partner Mobileye two years ago. Earlier that year, a driver was killed when their Autopilot system failed to brake to avoid an obstacle. Musk’s proposed timelines should be taken with a grain of salt, however. Lexar announced its new JumpDrive Fingerprint F35 USB 3.0 flash drive today, which uses fingerprint authentication to protect your data. It works with speeds up to 150 MB/s, and it can recognize fingerprints in less than a second. You can set it up to recognize up to 10 different people, and it’s protected with 256-bit AES encryption to keep your files safe. 9to5Mac reports that the 32GB variant is available to preorder on Amazon

now for $32.99, but it’s not clear when the flash drive will ship. There are also 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB variants, which will cost $50, $90, and $170, respectively, and they will ship in the next few months. Although Lexar says the JumpDrive is compatible with Mac and Windows PCs, Mac owners without a USB 3.0 port won’t be able to use the flash drive without a dongle. Perhaps the company’s next move should be to focus on making its fingerprint sensors available for USB-C flash drives.

The 24-year-old achieved the feat during their third match against Japan at the ongoing 5th edition of Men's Asian Champions Trophy Muscat.

"I am very proud to have been able to represent the nation through the years, and it gives me immense joy and satisfaction to be getting the chance to play in my 100th International Match for India," Kumar said.

General Secretary of Hockey India, Rajinder Singh, while congratulating Kumar, praised him for showing a consistent progress in his game. "On behalf of Hockey India, I would like to congratulate Surender Kumar on completing 100 International Caps for the country. He is a young player who has developed well through the ranks and I am happy to see his progress as he is regularly involved with the senior team now," Singh said. "I have always wanted to represent my country at the highest level, and to be able to do it a hundred times, it swells my heart with gratitude towards everyone who has been involved in my development which includes my teammates, coaches, team management, family, friends and Hockey India," he added. His dynamic performances in the Hockey India League and in the domestic circuit saw him get selected regularly for the senior team in from the year 2016 onwards. Five Indians in

weighlifting Worlds

India had produced a stunning 9-0 victory over Japan in their third roundrobin match on Sunday. The team dominated proceedings from the start and scored goals in all the four quarters through Mandeep Singh (4', 49', 57'), Harmanpreet Singh (17', 21'), Gurjant

Singh (8'), Akashdeep Singh (36'), Sumit (42') and Lalit Upadhyay (45') to register a convincing victory and remain at the top of the pool standings. India are now slated to play their fourth round-robin match against Malaysia on October 23.

Spirited India to take on

Malaysia after Japan's 9-0 rout

As many as five athletes will represent India in the 84th Men's and 27th Women's World Weightlifting Championships (WWC) slated to be held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan from November 1 to 10. The international weightlifting federation released the list on Monday. West Bengal's Achanta Sheuli in men’s (73 kg) and Rakhi Halder in women's (64 kg) category have been shortlisted. Ajay Singh will be vying for glory in 79 kg category. Punjab's Gurdeep Singh will sweat it out in men's 109 kg division. Odisha's Jhili Dhalabeera will fight for the top honours in women's 49 kg division. The competition is significant since it will be considered as qualifying event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Thus, it is to be considered as first important milestone on the road leading to Tokyo. A record total of 693 athletes from 91 countries will compete in Ashgabat. It is the most in any world championships. Paris 2011 had earlier topped the number of participating countries with 87, while Athens 1999 topped the participating

athletes with 626 lifters. The 2018 IWF World Championships will also feature the new bodyweight categories for both Men and Women. The last two Weightlifting World Championships were held in the United States (Houston in 2015 and Anaheim in 2017) and the 2018 Worlds will be the first held in Asia since Antalya, Turkey hosted the 2010 competition. The IWF has said that Turkmenistan's successful job hosting the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games was part of the reason they were selected. The 2018 WWC was originally slated to be held in Lima, Peru.

Looking to extend their unbeaten streak in the ongoing Men's Asian Champions Trophy, the spirited Indian hockey team will take on Malaysia in their fourth round-robin match on Tuesday. The team had earlier produced a flamboyant performance in their third match against Japan, blanking the latter by a massive 9-0 margin at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex on Sunday. In tie against Japan, the world no 5 team showcased some domineering display scoring goals in all the four quarters through Mandeep Singh (4', 49', 57'), Harmanpreet Singh (17', 21'), Gurjant Singh (8'), Akashdeep Singh (36'), Sumit

(42') and Lalit Upadhyay (45') to register a convincing victory and remain at the top of the Pool Standings. The Indians afresh from the 3-1 victory against Pakistan on Saturday, started the match with a good rhythm as forwards Lalit Upadhyay and Akashdeep Singh got chances in the opening minutes. But it was Mandeep Singh who drew the first blood in the 4th minute as he deflected a low cross from Akashdeep Singh from the left flank, through the Japanese goalkeeper's leg and into the back of the net. India continued to put pressure on the Japanese defense and scored eight more goals till the final whistle.

Teary-eyed Australian PM apologises to child

sex abuse victims Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Monday briefly broke down and publicly apologised to the victims of child sexual abuse in institutions. Speaking at the Australian Parliament, Morrison said that the distressing experience suffered by the victims from church orphanages to youth groups and schools had been "hiding in plain sight for too long", CNN reported. "We honour every survivor in this country, we love you, we hear you and we honour you," he said. The Australian leader also rued that victims affected by physical, sexual and mental abuse had to commit suicide due to the trauma they endured for years. He also urged the victims to come forward and make their revelations. Morrison expressed hope that the apology would "give strength to others who were yet to share what happened."

"Today Australia confronts a trauma, an abomination, hiding in plain sight for far too long. Today we confront a question too horrible ask, let alone answer, why weren't the children of our nation loved, nurtured and protected?" he added. Morrison's apology comes after a recent probe on institutional sexual abuse in Australia, spanning five years, shockingly revealed thousands of such cases, the CNN report said. Earlier this year, Australia's Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse had come out with a report of sexual abuse of children at different institutions dating back to decades. Costing 500 million Australian dollars, the government had prepared the report after hearing the horrific ordeals of thousands of victims over five years, while warning that children were still being sexually assaulted.

Sascha Bajin, coach of Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka, has stated that the World number four has impressively maintained her focus level after the controversial US Open final, last month. Giving the examples of players like Sloane Stephens, the coach said that unlike others, Osaka did not struggle much. "I think that after the US Open, we have seen in the past with a lot of players who kind of fall into a little dip after achieving such a big milestone because it is kind of satisfying and it's something you dream of so long," WTA quoted Bajin, as saying. "Kerber, when she won the Australian Open, struggled for a little while. Sloane [Stephens] lost eight first-round matches, I believe, in a row. Ostapenko. Everybody kind of struggled. Just seeing her, how she manages all of it, it's pretty impressive," he added.

I said, for me, it's kind of expected. I have been there with a player, winning the US Opentitle. Obviously, I'm really happy I did it with Naomi, as well," he said. "But it's kind of, all right, let's go. We got Tokyo going, we got Beijing, we got this tournament. Maybe that's why sometimes she says I'm never satisfied. But I am satisfied," he added. Osaka had defeated Williams 6-2, 6-4 in the 2018 US Open final. The match was marred with controversy as the American player had lost her cool after chair umpire Ramos handed over three code violations against her for allegedly receiving on-court coaching.

Reflecting on Osaka's performance in the subsequent tournaments, Bajin stated that he is quite satisfied with her performance. "We try to keep a focus, we try to keep our routine, and treat every day the same. Like

Beauty Slay your eyebrows following these 7. When you shave your eyebrow do not get too close to the mirror 8. Eyebrows are sisters, not twins Please do not fall into the horrible mistake of drawing and designing your eyebrows as a caricature. This takes away all the naturalness that should have the eyebrows, remember that nothing happens if the left eyebrow is a bit uneven to the right (do not go to exaggerate with the difference), just stop worrying because they are "perfect".

Nowadays, eyebrows have become the center of attention. If sometimes you feel like despite the makeup and all the beauty tips you follow there is something your face still lacking, it is probably because you haven’t gotten the right design for your eyebrows.

special brush to comb your brows up, and small scissors with which you can "blunt" the length of your eyebrows (please never exaggerate). The better you take care of the blunting of your eyebrows the faster and better they will grow.

Here there are 15 things you should know about the maintenance and arrangement of your eyebrows:

4. Choose an eyebrow design that is appropriate to the shape of your eyes

1. Locate the arch of your eyebrow to achieve a better design

5. Not all beautiful eyebrows should be thick

The design of your eyebrows completely changes your look, so the first thing you should do is locate the highest point of your eyebrows with a pencil.

The slim and elegant eyebrow also makes the look beautiful, and maybe this tip will save the life to your eyebrows before you decide to paint them in excess.

2. Choose the design that fits the best with the shape of your face

6. Paint the bow with greater strength than the beginning of the eyebrow

3. Always have a special brush for your eyebrows

Never paint the entire eyebrow from beginning to end, the most beautiful will be when you paint only the arch of the eyebrow and below the root, this will give a natural blur to your eyebrows.

This trick is one of the most important, what you need in addition to your eyebrow shadow, it will always be a

9. Wet your eyeshadow a bit with hair spray Just wet it a little bit and your shadow will have more solid consistency when drawing your eyebrows, remember to also wet your brush a little bit and then draw your eyebrow hair by hair (the smallest hairs especially) until your eyebrow is full and abundant.

10. Always choose the most natural and similar colour to your hair 11. Consider the separation

tips

of your eyebrows in relation to the shape of your nose

The closer your brows are, the more refined and thin your nose will look, but if you have a flatter nose, avoid having your eyebrows close, give them a good separation so that you have much more balance in your eyes.

12. Always draw the bottom line of the eyebrow to highlight the complete design When you draw this line first, it is much

easier to blend the full filling of your eyebrows from top to bottom. Use a spoon if you have problems to achieve a well-defined and straight line.

13. In the end always create "lights" in your eyebrows with a lighter corrector than the color of your skin Once you have finished designing, painting and fixing your eyebrow, always create lights with clear corrector. Draw below the arch, the separation between the eyebrows and above also, just a little to give a more clean and natural finish to your makeup.

Say no to

As people are getting busy with their hectic work schedule - with little to no time left for self-care and pampering - hair fall is increasingly becoming a common problem. The problem arises due to extreme levels of stress, insufficient sleeping, and overexposure to dust and air pollution in the city air. Along with the external factors playing a spoilsport in one’s hair health, there are some internal aspects too; especially the lower levels of metabolism that are greatly responsible

for the degeneration of hair.

Take care of the dietary woes: Deficiency of vitamin D3, vitamin B12, protein, and deficiency of essential minerals, excess of vitamin A, malfunctioning of the thyroid gland, fungal infections, and irregular periods or early menopause in women are some of the most common causes of hair fall. Besides, chronic diseases like cancer and tuberculosis (TB) may also destroy the hair and scalp health. So, make sure to

Ensure intake of plenty of fluids:

A gentle massage with hot oil can do wonders in controlling the hair loss problem. Ranging all the way from tea tree essential to lavender and rosemary essential, there is a huge variety of oils available for the hot oil treatment. The treatment will not only moisten the scalp but will also provide it with the essential natural oils thus, strengthening the hair from within. For quick and effective results, make sure to do this oil therapy at least once or twice a week.

Not drinking enough fluids is certainly bad for your hair. We need to understand that drinking eight glasses of water a day is not just another myth, but is a medically proven solution to curb many health ailments, including eliminating the excess greasiness in hair and providing much-needed moisture to the dry scalp. This ultimately reduces the chances of having dandruff which forms the basis of hair fall issue.

Protection from the harm: It is also important to be extra careful about the other influences that might be impacting your hair’s health. Excessive styling with blow dryers, strengtheners, curlers and other hair colouring chemicals can strip the hair out of its

Be regular with oil therapies:

Make yoga and meditation a habit: Along with handling the stress issues, yoga and meditation also promote blood and oxygen circulation to the scalp. The enhanced blood circulation in the head region helps in maintaining strength, hygiene and overall health of the hair. Regular practice of forward-bending asanas and twice-a-day meditation therapies are recommended for positive results.

Health

Obesity is a medical term used to describe being too heavy for your height so that your health is affected. Obese children and adults are at much greater risk of acute and long-term health problems. The World Health Organisation describes the worldwide prevalence of obesity as an epidemic. New Zealand has among the highest obesity rates for both adults and children in the OECD, and our rates are rising. Almost 1 in 3 adult New Zealanders (over 15 years) is obese, and 1 in 10 children.

Why is obesity a concern? undefinedBeing overweight, or obese, can lower your quality of life as well as decreasing your life expectancy. It makes moving around more difficult, and is harder on your heart, muscles and bones. Obesity in adults is associated with a long list of health conditions including: • Type 2 diabetes • ischaemic heart disease (IHD) • stroke • several common cancers • osteoarthritis • sleep apnoea • reproductive abnormalities. Obesity in children increases the likelihood of:

• being obese as an adult • abnormal lipid profiles • impaired glucose tolerance • high blood pressure • musculoskeletal problems • asthma psychological problems including body dissatisfaction, poor self-esteem, depression and other mental health problems.

What causes obesity?

estimate if you are in the healthy weight range for your height and ethnicity. Your BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared (kg/m2).

Tips for losing weight Losing weight normally involves a fair amount of hard work and determination. The key is to make slow, steady lifestyle changes, which over the long-term will help you to lose weight

started: • Make physical activity part of your day, every day. Find exercise you enjoy doing and try to work it into your daily routine. It's important you see it as an enjoyable part of your day not a punishment! • Create a healthy environment for your family by limiting time spent in front of electronic devices. Less time in front of a screen gives you more time to be active. • Eating smaller amounts is the best way to cut down energy (kilojoules/calories).

Excess weight or obesity is the result of an energy imbalance. This means too much energy (kilojoules/calories in the form of food) is put into the body and not enough is used (ie, through exercise). The excess energy is stored by the body as fat. Although some people are more prone to weight gain than others, the increase in the number of people who are obese in recent years has occurred too quickly to be explained by genetic changes. Most experts now believe that this 'obesity epidemic' is caused by our modern lifestyle, which promotes over-eating/ drinking and limits opportunities for physical activity.

How is obesity measured? Body mass index (BMI) is a commonly used measure that can be used to

and keep it off. There is no quick fix – but the ongoing benefits in terms of your health and well-being make it well worth the effort. If you are a parent you have an important role in shaping your child’s dietary habits. You can control what, when and how your child eats, as well as being a role model. Here are some tips to help you get

Don’t try to change too many foods at once. Build small changes into your everyday habits. • Limit the amount of sweet baking, chips, fried foods and fizzy drinks as these are high in energy, fat and sugar. • Quench your thirst with water – it's calorie free and essential for your body to function well. Health There is need to talk about sexuality According to the researchers, this is problematic as sexuality, which includes so much more than just sex, is an essential part of human experience and strongly with linked with emotional and mental health.

A recent study has found that stroke survivors struggle to openly discuss sexuality, while health professionals rarely address the topic during rehabilitation. According to the research, Stroke survivors and their partners are not adequately supported to deal with changes to their relationships, selfidentity, gender roles, and intimacy following a stroke.

A stroke survivor, discussing this issues said, "But that (stroke) doesn't change the essence of who I am or what I want before and after. It only changes what I can do. It doesn't change what I want." The systematic review collated several studies to explore the experiences of almost 650 male and female stroke survivors ranging from 20 to 105 years of age, as well as the experiences of 283 partners.

The finding is supported by data stating that as few as 15 percent of patients receive information on intimate relations post-stroke, despite clinical guideline recommendations. Dr Margaret McGrath, lead author of the study said, "Issues around post-stroke sexuality and where to seek support are rarely discussed with stroke survivors or their loved ones despite numerous interactions with medical, rehabilitation and counselling staff."

Using a broad definition of sexuality, the study explores dimensions such as gender roles and identity, presentation of self to others, sexual expression, intimacy, relationships, and reproduction. For couples in a relationship before the stroke, physical and cognitive impairment, communication difficulties and post-stroke fatigue meant that preexisting, often stereotyped gender-based roles, needed to change.

"Sexuality and disability is viewed as a taboo topic so stroke survivors don't know how to talk about it and health professionals don't ask the questions," McGrath added.

after stroke: Study

"Men often struggled with an inability to be what they viewed as a 'protector' or 'provider' for the family, while female stroke survivors lamented a loss of their role as wife, mother or homemaker - all of which affects the way they interact with each other. This also impacts partners' selfidentity, particularly when they moved from being an intimate partner to a primary caregiver,"n said Dr McGrath. For people not in a relationship or whose relationship ended, stroke decreased their self-confidence and willingness to seek out new relationships. McGrath also stated that stroke also impacted the survivor's relationship with their own body, with many seeing their body as unpredictable or separate from themselves. Being sexually intimate exacerbates these feelings,

leading to heightened levels of anxiety. Many of these fears and misconceptions could be addressed through proper support from health and rehabilitation professionals. Health professionals' reluctance to address sexuality is due to a lack of knowledge and confidence. There is a need to tailor education and training to address this knowledge gap. The full findings appeared in the journalClinical Rehabilitation.
