Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern:

Labour would vote against 'Kiwi values' bill Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says she doesn't support the concept of NZ First's Respecting NZ Values Bill, which would impose cultural conditions on migrants and refugees entering the country.

Ms Ardern, who arrived back from New York where she addressed the UN last week, said the bill was not something the Labour Party would promote or likely vote for in Parliament.

"We consider each bill case by case," she said.

"It is not a government bill, it is not government policy. It's a New Zealand First bill and it's up to them to pursue it and debate it and it's not something that Labour is likely to support at all."

The New Zealand First conference at the weekend voted for a member's bill requiring new arrivals to sign up to designated values.

The bill includes core values that demand respect for gender equality, legal sexual preferences, freedom of religion and a commitment not to campaign against alcohol consumption.

Ms Ardern said there was already provision in law to deport immigrants who broke the law and that there were

other ways to integrate immigrants into New Zealand society, which included giving them support.

She said the government's refugee resettlement programme offered the best vehicle for doing so.

"I think the best way that we can make sure we are sharing, upholding, spreading what we consider to be values that are important to us, is the way we do it now," she said.

"Our refugee resettlement programme, for instance, is one of the best in the world because we support people when they come here.

"We give them a period where they're at the resettlement centre, where we really expose them to things that are a part of New Zealand life."

Such disagreements between NZ First and Labour were part of being involved in a coalition government and reflected the nature of MMP politics. She did not think the bill was xenophobic.

"This is not new to us, we have to walk these lines frequently and we all know the difference between being the leader of our respective parties and also government policy," she said.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says there are better ways to integrate immigrants.

Earlier, New Zealand First MP Clayton Mitchell, who helped draft the bill, said the vast majority of the public he has spoken to were in favour of the proposal.

"The feeling that I am getting already, in less than 24 hours, is very, very positive so I think it is something New Zealanders want as a whole."

The bill has yet to be discussed by the party's caucus.

But Ms Ardern said if it was drawn from the ballot, her party would vote against it.

Meanwhile, advocates of the bill say similar "values" obligations were already part of immigration policy in Australia and Canada and that an expectation of adherence to tolerance and pluralism among those allowed into the country was not unreasonable. - RNZ

Shanti Niwas seniors celebrate Diwali at Bharatiya Mandir

A large number of Shanti Niwas seniors took part in Diwali celebration held at Bharatiya Mandir organised jointly by both the organisations. Bharatiya Mandir and Shanti Niwas Charitable Trust Inc., are already jointly running the Drop-In centre at the 258, Balmoral Road building, one house away from the temple since last few months very successfully. Diwali celebration on Wednesday 14th November was part in the series of their joint efforts in working for the wider community.

ceremonial lamp and recital of sacred hymns by the Mandir Priest Acharya Upendra Bhai Joshi. The lamp lighting was done by one of the old volunteers of Shanti Niwas, Mrs Usha, whose house unfortunately, got completely burnt due to fire on Diwali night. It was a very emotional moment for the victim and for others sitting in the Mandir main hall. A large number of community and political leaders were also present on this occasion which included National MPs Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi and Paramjit Parmar and

Labour MP Priyanca Radhakrishnan, representatives from Local Board and Auckland Council were also present at the function.

Shanti Niwas General Manager Nilima Venkat did the opening address by thanking all the attendees for joining the celebration and wishing all a Happy Diwali followed by the address from all the three MPs, who all seemed to be quite elated to be present there. Later, Bharatiya Mandir’s President Hemant Parashar in his vote of thanks, gave a brief outline about the Mandir’s history,

If you are going to open up your home, then you need to ensure that you can oversee the security of the property.

This year I have noticed that we are getting a number of properties broken into when occupants are actually home.

Don’t keep your cars keys where they can be easily found, and if you do have a key holder, make sure it is not located near a door or access point and in plain sight.

There are a number of other great home security measures that you can take to reduce the chance of being victimized, however if you live with the opinion that “this will never happen to me” and you are always leaving doors and windows open, then it is just a matter of time before your good fortune runs out.

Immediately after the brief speeches, several seniors presented a number of dances and songs which made everyone sing and dance with them and it went on for more then an hour. More than 250 seniors were part of the Diwali celebration and all were very happy for it being organised in the temple.

The programme ended with a sumptuous lunch provided at the Mandir dining hall which all the seniors and other present enjoyed.

Shakthi Seniors Charitable Trust working for community

Shakthi Seniors Charitable Trust formed in 2005 delivers inter-cultural Positive Ageing Programs for the seniors of South Asian origin. The program is held on Wednesdays fortnightly from 10am to 1pm at the Anchorage Park Community Park, Pakuranga, Auckland.

The programme starts with a hymn recital, followed by a welcome and community notices by the president. A guided yoga and physical exercises are conducted by the trained members. A small break followed by informative talks on various topics including health, fitness, wellbeing, etc are delivered by guest speakers from various organisation. A socialising component is also allocated to play games and interact with each other to share thoughts. Once a year an outdoor activity is planned for all members to allow increased interaction among members.

Bharatiya Mandir and Radhakrishan Mandir celebrate ‘Tulsi Vivah’ with pomp and gaiety

New Zealand’s oldest temple, Bharatiya Mandir in Balmoral and Radhakrishan Mandir of Eden Terrace, Mahatma Gandhi centre, celebrated ‘Tulsi Vivah’ in a grand ceremony at Bharatiya Mandir on Tuesday 20th November which was attended by over 500 devotees from both sides.

This alliance of ‘Tulsi Vivah’ between the two Mandirs started in year 2000 and ever since eighteen years later, their bond is getting even stronger by

each passing year. As per the agreement between the two temples one year one temple plays the groom side and the other temple plays the bride’s side. So as per their arrangement the groom side takes the ‘Baraat’ or the marriage procession to the bride’s house i.e. Mandir and a full marriage ceremony like the real one, takes place where one family play host to the groom and other family to the bride.

This arrangement is swapped over the next year, so the temple hosting bride one year would host the groom next year.

Tulsi (the plant) is venerated as Goddess in Hinduism and is considered wife of Lord Vishnu. As per the legend Tulsi or Brinda’s husband, who was a demon king was killed by

Lord Shiva as Lord Vishnu disguised himself as Tulsi’s husband and broke her chastity to end the demon king.

Tulsi later cursed Vishnu, to turn black in colour and to be separated from his wife which later was fulfilled when Vishnu came in his avatar of Lord Ram. Lord Vishnu later transferred Vrinda’s soul to a plant and was called ‘Tulsi’ and promised her to marry in her next birth, and to commemorate this event the ceremony of Tulsi Vivah is performed.

The mandir ceremony lasted, a couple of hours where several regular temple visiting devotees also joined the festivities. Over 150 devotees were part of ‘baraat’ coming with the groom from Radhakrishan Mandir to the bride side at Bharatiya Mandir. The marriage ceremony concluded with a grand feast organised by the host temple Bharatiya Mandir. Everyone coming to temple was ecstatic to be part a part of GOD ‘s own wedding ceremony.

Motorcycle incidents: 'This crash rate is going to drop' when older riders stop Riding motorcycles is losing its appeal which will help bring down the climbing road toll, a safety campaigner says.

Four motorcyclists were killed in three separate crashes at the weekend and some are calling for greater regulation to make sure only those who are capable of handling a powerful bike are allowed to get on one.

The country's road toll clocked over 330 at the weekend and is tracking towards a similar result to last year, which was the highest road toll since 2009.

Police Minister Stuart Nash is blaming the spike in motorcycle fatalities on men in a mid-life crisis getting on powerful bikes they cannot handle.

Motorcycle Safety Consultants chief executive Allan Kirk said the hobby was becoming dominated by older men by virtue of young people spending more time indoors and on technology.

He said in the last year Harley-Davidson had shut down two production lines because motorcycles were no longer as

popular as they once were.

"Younger people are being more inclined to stay with their tablets or whatever.

"They're not getting out as much, they're not riding motorcycles. The older guys are riding bikes and they're getting older and sooner or later they're going to be off them and this crash rate is going to drop right away."

The idea of a test for riders of more powerful bikes has been floated but Mr Kirk said it was pointless because it could not recreate a car coming at a motorcyclist on a corner or a rider losing control on a slippery surface.

But AA Driving School general manager Roger Venn said there was merit in some type of re-testing of motorists.

Middle-aged motorcyclist Mr Venn recently got back on a bike after a 20year break.

"I think it's incredible that you can pass your driver test at 16, 17 years of age and simply never be tested at all ever

again. And the first time you have to do anything again is at 75 when you have to get a doctor's certificate."

AA Driving School and ACC have teamed up to provide Ride Forever - a course of varying levels designed for motorcyclists to improve their skills.

Mr Venn said younger drivers were crashing far less than they used to; it was the older demographic who were responsible for the bulk of ACC claims.

As for upskilling courses, Road Safety Campaigner Clive Matthew-Wilson said they were a waste of time because most people who did them were already safety conscious.

He said if the government wanted to tackle the road toll it needed to

implement a far tougher test for motorcyclists - one that measured their physical ability to stay safe.

"The reality is there needs to be a much, much stricter motorbike test that electronically tests people's reaction times, eye-hand-coordination and so on and so forth. And if they can't pass a relatively strict test then they should lose their license immediately.''

He said while regulation was incredibly unpopular, particularly with motorcyclists, it would be the only way to save middle-aged men from becoming a statistic. - RNZ

New Zealand National Conferences announced at Hindu Volunteers Meet Three New Zealand National Conferences will be held in May 2019 and 2020, respectively. The announcements were made during the Hindu Volunteers meet held on Saturday.

Representatives from many Hindu organizations attended New Zealand Hindu Volunteers Meet which was organized by the Hindu Council of New Zealand (HCNZ). The theme of the Hindu Volunteers Meet was Coming Together, Working Together, Growing Together.

Five sessions were held during the day.

The sessions included: 1. SWOT Analysis; 2. Qualities of a Karyakarta (selfless Volunteer); 3. What we want to achieve in NZ as a co

mmunity and an organisation; 4. Goals: How we are going to achieve: Process and System; and 5. Overall Group Discussion (Mukth Chintan).

“We need to get the Visibility, Acceptability and Respectability for the Hindu Community, for each of the Hindu Organisation, as well as for the individual as a volunteer”, said Swami Vigyananand.

Hindu Council of New Zealand over many years has helped position Hindu Community in New Zealand in a better way by working closely with local and national governments, by bringing together various Hindu and Dharma based organisations, and by organising national conferences and community activities/festivals with the help from New Zealand’s upcoming Hindu youth, women and community leaders. The hard work of volunteers has resulted in Hindu Council of New Zealand being accorded a Special Consultative Status with United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in 2012.

Hastings dairy and restaurant owners sentenced for tax evasion A Hastings couple, who operated dairies, restaurants and other businesses, have been sentenced to prison and home detention on tax evasion charges totalling nearly a million dollars.

Rakesh and Nalini Kumar operated Red Chilli Restaurants and Take Away in Taradale and Indian Palace Restaurant in Napier together with dairies in Hastings and Mount Maunganui and other businesses.

Rakesh Kumar will spend two-and-a-half years in prison after pleading guilty to providing false returns and evading tax totalling $833,294.99. His wife, Nalini Kumar, has been sentenced to five months home detention and 100 hours community work after a guilty plea to evading $127,029.60 in tax.

Inland Revenue spokesperson Karen Whitiskie says the couple underreported cash sales and paid employees under the table over several years.

“Between 2010 and 2016, Mr Kumar’s companies reported substantial losses for income tax and GST purposes. There were also an abnormally low number of cash sales recorded at a time when his

bank records revealed substantial cash deposits.

“Mr Kumar also paid his employees in cash and didn’t list them on the Employer Monthly Schedules provided to Inland Revenue.”

Inland Revenue began looking in to Red Chilli restaurant after it showed abnormally low cash sales between 2009 and 2015. Indian Palace also had similar abnormally low cash sales between 2010 to 2015.

“In one year, the companies’ tax returns stated less than 1% of its sales were cash sales, compared to the industry average of 30%. Both restaurants PAYE returns also understated staff numbers, with Indian Palace claiming only one employee over the busy Christmas holiday season in 2010-2011,” Karen Whitiskie says.

We need to get hard on

This Labour led coalition seems to have it priorities wrong.

This is visible in its approach in a number of areas.

Its soft approach on crime has now filtered its way to the New Zealand Police.

Recently, I came across information that our Police visited 84 addresses as part of a crackdown again illicit drugs.

There was significant intelligence to say that people residing at these addresses were involved in illicit drug import yet not one person was charged.

As a former Parliamentary Private Secretary for Law and Order, I find it unbelievable that Police would not charge people who import drugs like MDMA and LSD. These drugs have the potential to cause a huge amount of harm to our

communities.

The focus of the New Zealand Police is now on education and harm reduction.

While it is important that education should form an important part of our fight against drugs, taking appropriate action against people who knowingly import drugs must also form a part of New Zealand Police policy.

Information available suggests that Auckland teenagers were importing drugs to sell to their peers. These are incredibly dangerous substances which are so potent even a small amount can kill or be diluted to supply up to 50 people.

And regretfully this follows Immigration Minister Iain Lees-Galloway inexplicably granting residency to a violent, gang associated, fraudster who also imported illicit drugs when there are a number of qualified people from

many ethnicities who can contribute positively to New Zealand who have had their residency applications denied.

Illicit drugs ruin lives and cause a great deal of harm in our communities.

While we need a health approach for people with addiction, we can’t stand by and watch while the people who peddle these into our communities are coddled.

National is the party of law and order and won’t stand by this Labour led coalitions soft on crime approach which allows criminals to get away with pushing dangerous drugs into our communities.

Giving teachers more time with every child Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern recently announced the Government will employ around 600 new Learning Support Coordinators, who will work alongside teachers to make sure kids with additional learning needs get the support they deserve.

This isn’t just a game changer for children with additional learning needs; it’s a game changer for all children in our schools. The new Learning Support Coordinators will take on the job of putting together the extra support some students need. That frees up teachers to do what they do best – teach. With the extra support, teachers can spend more time with every child in the classroom.

The Learning Support Coordinators will also support teachers by providing professional advice and guidance about how to teach kids with additional needs. This ensures those children with additional needs will receive a high-quality education. Teachers will do more teaching and have less administrative duties, which means every child in school, whether they have additional needs or not, is better off.

It also gives the parents of children with additional needs a single point of contact with someone who understands the needs of their child and will look out for them as they move through their time in school.

One-in-five children in our schools have a disability or other learning or behavioural need. These new roles help them receive much-needed dedicated support.

commit to roles like these. By providing schools across the country with access to Learning Support Coordinators, we are showing our commitment to ease teacher workloads and provide them with well-qualified support.

Approving these new roles is just one part of our plan to strengthen New Zealand’s schools. We’ve already provided funding for 1,500 more teachers, hundreds of new classrooms across the country, and the biggest increase in learning support in over a decade.

We’re rebuilding public education, including fixing run down and leaky schools. Children deserve safe, modern spaces to learn in. Right here in Auckland we’re already getting on with the job, and have approved funding for 56 new classrooms, a new primary school in Hobsonville, an additional

240 places at Waterview Primary and 350 places at Paerata Primary. In the Maungakiekie Electorate, where I am based, we’ve committed $28 million to the redevelopment of Onehunga High School to ensure that these children also have access to new, warm and dry classrooms and state of the art learning facilities that will encourage growth and achievement.

The PM's goal is to make New Zealand the best country in the world to be a child. These new Learning Support Coordinators are important to achieving that goal. We have to ensure

that every single kid, no matter where they live, no matter their background or ethnicity, their ability or disability, has the best education possible.

One of the best parts of this programme was the level of cooperation between the three governing parties. New Zealand First MP and Associate Education Minister, Hon.Tracey Martin played a critical role. This is another example of the Coalition Government working together and getting on with the job to create a fairer, kinder New Zealand we can all be proud of.

Frank Bainimarama sworn in as Fiji PM Fiji's re-elected prime minister Frank Bainimarama has been sworn in to office at a ceremony in Suva.

Mr Bainimarama's FijiFirst party will have another four years in power after last week's election.

"I, Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama swear that I will be faithful and bare true allegiance for the Republic of Fiji, according to law," Mr Bainimarama said before a gathering of party members, diplomats, senior members of the military and judiciary at the presidential residence, State House.

"And I will obey, observe, uphold and maintain the constitution of the Republic of Fiji, so help me God."Mr Bainimarama's party won 50.02 percent of the vote and 27 seats in the 51-seat parliament.

Local MP Simon O’Connor selects local young person to represent Tamaki Local MP (National MP for Tamaki) Simon O’Connor has selected Aksheen Dhillon, 17, of Diocesan School for Girls as his representative at Youth Parliament 2019.

“I was very impressed by the high quality of applications I received and was overwhelmed by how passionate young people are to represent their community,” says Mr O’Connor. “It was a very difficult choice, but Aksheen’s essay on the importance of freedom of expression and tolerance for different viewpoints was exceptional. 120 Youth MPs, from across the country, will come to Parliament on 16 and 17 July 2019, where they will learn about the government decision-making process and share the views of New Zealand youth with the country’s decision-makers. As well as representing Tamaki at Youth Parliament in July, Ms Dhillon will hold the title of Youth MP for Tamaki from March 2019 through to August.

India, Singapore reaffirm ties at Defence Ministers’ Dialogue Indian Minister of Defence Nirmala Sitharaman and her Singaporean counterpart Dr. Ng Eng Hen co-chaired the 3rd Defence Ministers’ Dialogue (DMD) between India and Singapore on Tuesday.

The DMD commenced after both countries signed the revised Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) in 2015 to further strengthen the long-standing defence relationship between the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and the Indian Armed Forces.

Earlier in the day, Dr. Ng attended the final sea phase of the 25th edition of the Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise - SIMBEX on board INS Shakti.

The multidimensional exercise witnessed participation of ships, submarines a well as aircraft from both sides and live firings at sea.

Both Ministers complimented all personnel participating in the milestone event and for making it a success which is a testament of the long-standing ties between the armed forces of the two countries.

They also commended the conclusion of the Navy Implementing Arrangement Concerning Mutual Coordination, Logistics and Services Support in June 2018, which, together with the Navy Bilateral Agreement, concluded in November 2017, have expanded and deepened bilateral naval cooperation.

Dr Ng expressed appreciation for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s keynote address at the 2018 Shangri-La Dialogue, wherein PM Modi articulated India’s vision for the Indo-Pacific region.

In this regard, Singapore strongly supports India’s deep engagement with ASEAN member states participating in patrols along the Straits of Malacca with Singapore and looks forward to a inaugural conduct of the trilateral maritime exercise with Thailand in the Andaman Sea. Not retiring from politics, clarifies Swaraj External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday took to Twitter to clarify that she is not retiring from politics but will not contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls due to her health constraints.

Her clarification came after people assumed that Swaraj is retiring from politics as she had announced earlier in the day to not contest the next Lok Sabha elections.

Opposition leader Shashi Tharoor also posted the best wishes for Swaraj on her Twitter handle.

International News US may give troops authority to protect border personnel

United State President Donald Trump might grant new authority to US troops deployed on the Southwest border with Mexico to protect Customs and Border Protection personnel from migrants if they engage in violence, two defence officials and another US official directly familiar with the plans.

An additional administration official informed that the authority will also grant protection of federal property.

Around 5,800 to 5,900 troops have

been assigned for the border mission.

However, at the moment the troops do not have the authority to intervene if CBP personnel came under attack. The officials informed that the move could be declared as soon as Monday evening.

This comes after the Department of Homeland Security officials started to get information about groups of individuals planning to enter into legal ports of entry in California by attempting to pass through vehicle lanes.

Pak issues over 3800 visas to Sikh pilgrims for Nanak's birth anniversary The Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi has issued over 3800 visas to Sikh pilgrims from India to participate in the 550th birthday anniversary celebrations of Baba Guru Nanak Dev Ji in Pakistan from November 21-30.

“Under the framework of the Pakistan-India Protocol on Visits to Religious Shrines of 1974, a large number of Sikh ‘yatrees’ from India visit Pakistan to observe various religious festivals/occasions every year. The over 3800 visas issued by the Pakistan High Commission are in addition to the visas issued to Sikh pilgrims participating in the event from other countries. This is by far the largest number of visas issued in recent years to Sikh ‘yatrees’ for Baba Guru Nanak’s birth anniversary celebrations, well beyond the maximum number of

3000, mutually agreed between the two countries for this event,” Pakistan High Commission said.

Pakistan’s High Commissioner Sohail Mahmood said this was a “special gesture” by the Pakistan Government in view of the 550th anniversary celebrations of Baba Guru Nanak commencing in earnest from this year.

New Zealand's Largest Ever Cocaine Bust Found in the Container of Bananas NZ Customs have seized 190 kg of cocaine found in a container of bananas - New Zealand's largest bust of the drug.

An Australian investigation into an organised crime group in the country identified the potential shipment of illicit drugs that left Balboa, Panama on 4 August.

Just over two weeks later, on 20 August, a shipment of bananas arrived in Auckland on a vessel from Balboa.

However, it wasn't only bananas on board. New Zealand Customs and Police inspected the container and found five duffel bags on top of the boxes of bananas, containing 190

blocks of cocaine. The cocaine had an estimated harm value of more than $235 million dollars and would have had a street value of $28-36 million.

The blocks were wrapped in packaging tape and each weighed around one kilogram. A 24-hour joint investigation led to the arrest of a 41-year-old man in Sydney.

Previously the largest cocaine seizure was recorded in Tauranga last year. Four men were arrested after $20 million in cocaine was seized. The arrests came after a five-month-long inquiry by Customs and police uncovered 46kg of the drug.

Recipe

Pakora Kadhi Serves 4

• Ingredients:

• 1/2 cup Besan (gram flour) • 1/2 cup finely chopped (or 1 medium) Onion • 1 Green Chilli, seeded and finely chopped • A small pinch of Baking Soda • 1/3 cup + 1 tablespoon Water • Salt to taste • Oil for deep frying

Directions for Making Besan Pakora:

Mix 1/2 cup gram flour, chopped onion, chopped green chilli, baking soda and salt in a bowl.

Beat curd and 1/4 cup gram flour in a bowl with hand beater or blender.

• For Besan Pakora

Add water (approx. 1/3 cup + 1 tablespoon) in small quantities and make very thick batter (like idli batter).

Heat oil in a small frying pan on medium flame. Take spoonful of batter in between your fingers or in a spoon and carefully drop it in oil. Drop 5-6 pakoras in single batch.

Deep fry them until medium brown and crispy. Drain and transfer on plate having kitchen paper napkin on it and keep aside.

Follow the same process for remaining batter.

For Kadhi 1 cup sour Curd (yogurt) 1/4 cup Besan (gram flour) 1½ cups Water 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric Powder Salt to taste For Tempering 2 tablespoons Oil 1/4 teaspoon Fenugreek Seeds 1/4 teaspoon Mustard Seeds 1/4 teaspoon Cumin Seeds

• 1/2 teaspoon grated Ginger • 2 Dry Red Kashmiri Chillies • 1/2 teaspoon Red Chilli Powder • 1 tablespoon Coriander Leaves, finely chopped

Add 1½ cups water, turmeric powder and salt. Blend all ingredients using hand blender until smooth batter. Ensure that there are no lumps.

Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a medium size deep pan over medium flame. Add mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds. When they begin to crackle add cumin seeds and grated ginger; sauté for 20-30 seconds.

Add prepared curd-flour batter and mix well.

Cook on medium flame until raw smell of gram flour goes away or for approx.

8-10 minutes. Stir occasionally in between to prevent sticking. If mixture becomes very thick, add 1/2 cup more water and cook more for 3-4 minutes. It should have pouring consistency.

Meanwhile, heat 1 tablespoon oil in a small tempering pan on low flame. When oil is medium hot enough, remove tempering pan from flame and add dry red chilli and red chilli powder. Immediately pour it over prepared kadhi.

Add deep fried pakoras, mix well and cook for 3-4 minutes. Turn off the flame and garnish it with coriander leaves.

Taste: Sour and mild spicy.

Serving Ideas:

Punjabi kadhi pakora and chawal (steamed rice) is a delicious wholesome meal when served with vegetable salad, papad and glass of sweet lassi. It can be also served with tandoori roti, choice of vegetable curry and lassi for stomach filling dinner.

It’s not that Congress Party does not have good leaders but the someone needs to have guts to create that situation to look outside the family culture. It is also not a sign of a healthy democracy to confine power to a family which from one generation to other has only been giving the nation a plethora of never resolving issues. Even the issues like the basic infrastructure, basic sanitation, electricity, water, food security, unemployment were never dealt with due diligence. On top of everything, corruption became so rampant in every sphere of public life from top to bottom that it became a norm in society.

Narendra Modi keeps getting stronger with each passing day and the opposition combined considers it a threat to their existence hence they are trying hard to malign him by dragging his name in some fictitious scandal or other. Thanks to the power of a very strong social media now, the facts or the reality cannot be hide or twisted for very long and people use their own judgement over the lies and rhetoric’s. Narendra Modi government’s many historic and bold steps like GST implementation or demonetisation may not yield instant results today as opposition is pulling him down for but will surely pay back to economy in coming years in a very strong and sustainable manner. World institutions like IMF, World Bank and United Nation have applauded and approved of Modi government’s new reformative bold steps as historic and projected India to becoming a world powerhouse in coming years as a result of these steps taken.

In India, we normally take the liberty to say anything about politicians in general but I think Narendra Modi has shown and proved with his tireless/ selfless work and firm determination in 4-1/2 years that he means business and that he would do anything possible which is good for the country.

Adrian Hoffmann and Jochen Musch, lead researchers of the study, used an indirect questioning technique to gather information on people's true feelings about women leaders. The technique showed that people are not always honest when directly asked their opinion on socially sensitive questions because they prefer to give answers that they think will be accepted by others.

Gender stereotypes and gender-oriented prejudice pose a serious threat to women's careers and facilitate gender bias in the workplace. According to theorists, prejudice against women leaders emerges from an incongruity between their gender role and the more masculine social role of a leader. The findings were published in the journal Sex Roles.

Self-reports are often used to study people's prejudice against women leaders, and these have helped to gather important information about the form of intolerance and stereotyping against women in power takes. Such methods may, however, be biased because of the unwillingness of some people to disclose information that could be viewed by others as violating social norms, and therefore reflect unfavourably on the respondent.

To counter this effect, Hoffmann and Musch collected responses from 1529 German students with either a conventional direct question or an indirect question in the format of the so-called Crosswise Model. The randomization of individual answers which lies at the core of this advanced questioning technique grants full

show that people are significantly more prejudiced against women (37 per cent) than results from direct questions indicate (23 per cent). This could be because more participants were willing to admit to being prejudiced against women leaders if they were granted full confidentiality in their answers.

When granted full confidentiality, 28 per cent of women and 45 per cent of men in the sample indicated that they considered women to be less qualified for leadership positions than men.

Across the two study methods, men showed more prejudice than women.

However, the increase in the estimated prevalence of prejudice from a conventional direct question to the Crosswise Model was higher in women ( from 10 per cent to 28 per cent) than in men ( from 36 per cent to 45 per cent), indicating that women responded more strongly to being granted full confidentiality of their answers.

"This pattern suggests that women are much more reluctant than men to express their prejudice against women leaders. Perhaps because women feel obligated to solidarize with members of their in-group," explains Hoffmann.

"Given that even many women have reservations against women leaders, the societal and political promotion of gender equity has obviously not been successful at changing the attitudes of every potential future leader. It, therefore, does not seem unreasonable to expect the further persistence of workplace bias", adds Musch.

Perception of love, not as an emotion, but as the substratum of existence, becomes evident. The formless spirit shines through every form in creation and the mystery of life deepens, shattering atheism.

Then the journey begins, and it has four stages.

The first stage is Saarupya — to see the formless in the form, seeing God in all the forms. Often, one feels more comfortable seeing God as formless rather than with a form, because with a form, one feels a distance, a duality, a fear of rejection and other limitations.

In life all of our interactions are with a form, other than in deep sleep and in samadhi. And, if you do not see God in the form, then the waking part of life remains devoid of the Divine. All those who accept God to be formless use symbols, and perhaps love the symbols more than God himself. If God comes and tells a Christian to leave the cross or a Muslim to drop the crescent, perhaps he may not do it. To begin with, loving

to a sense of intimacy with the whole creation. In this stage, one overcomes the fear of rejection and other fears. But this is bound by time and space.

The third stage is Saanidhya — feeling the presence of the Divine by which you transcend the limitations of time and space.

Then the final stage is Saayujya — When you are firmly entrenched in the Divine. It is then you realize you are one with the Divine. There is a total merging with the Beloved and all duality disappears. This is that and that is this.

Whether an atheist or believer, he goes through these four stages.

The most pleasing aspect about it has been that these successes have been story, not star driven. Previously a big star was a major reason for films doing well. These films were guaranteed a good start, and just the star power was enough to ensure the movie made money. A closer look at hits of Bollywood in 2018 will show films with the maximum return on investment, are starring names not generally associated with blockbusters.

Ayushmann Khurrana has been the breakout actor for this year. The 34 year old has dabbled successfully in television and radio before his debut on the big screen in 2012, with Vicky Donor. His two releases Andhadhun and Badhaai Ho have received tremendous critical and commercial appreciation. Add to his two successes last year in Bareilly Ki Barfi and Shubh Mangal SaavdhanKhurrana is fast making his way into the top bracket of actors in Bollywood.

The running theme across all these hits has been their quirky but entertaining scripts. All of them have had Khurrana playing relatable characters in everyday situations. Audiences have connected with the happenings on screen. These films have been made on controlled budgets and have had attractive promotional campaigns. Andhadhun is a prime example of what good word of mouth can do for a film. The thriller started on a slow note but gathered steam in the coming days, running successfully in theatres for a month (a long period in today’s time when the first weekend is considered the most important for any film). It was for the first time that director Sriram Raghavan collaborated with the talented acting duo of Khurana and Tabu. Raghavan is one of the best directors, when it comes to making thrillers. He has helmed

brilliant films like Johnny Gadar and Badlapur. His style is reminiscent of the Vijay Anand School of cinema; a taut script with never ending twists and turns. Characters in his films are never black or white –they sport grey.

Another actor taking big strides in commercial Hindi cinema this year has been Rajkumar Rao. The 34 year old (seems the best age to be in) having already made his mark as a dependable actor, is now fast becoming a star. His horror comedy Stree has been one of the biggest hits of the year. The small budget film has made big profits and has immense potential for a sequel.

Another actor that got noticed in the film was Aparshakti Khurana. He is the brother of Ayushmann – the cinematic Gods seem to be smiling on the family.

Rajkumar first got noticed in the big

screen adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s novel- The 3 Mistakes of My Life- Kai Po Che. His last year’s release Newton was India’s entry to the Oscar’s.

The success of these actors bears testament to the changing nature of Hindi cinema. They do not belong to film families, have conventional good looks and did not have big launch films designed to showcase their abilities. Bollywood is producing fresh and engaging content. A good story is what will bring in audiences to the theaters. Today’s audiences are exposed to excellent content from around the world. They can spot mediocrity easily.

Bhangra Fit Auckland dance classes are more of dance workouts. Most people do not need any dancing skills to be a part of the group. Bhangra is an easy dance form and these classes are quite easy to follow. They are designed in a way that the feet move easily, and fitness is disguised in a form of great music and moves.

Hailing from Punjab region of northern India, Bhangra is an age-old folk dance that has made the transition from clubs to dance studios and gyms in the form of a high-intensity workout. Enthusiastic participants dip with sweat as they squat, jump and raise their arms.

How it works1. Body weight exercises in Bhangra involves movement of all muscles and bones and is a great toner for your leg, pelvic and buttock muscles.

2. Rapid arm movement tones the shoulder and back muscles.

3. It can be intense depending upon how hard you stomp and raise your knee as close to the hip level as possible.

4. As you move your body smoothly from one step to another, you'll notice your posture and abs getting stronger in the long run.

Bhangra Fit is an initiative by Bhumika Dhingra (who works as a QA Analyst with an IT company). She loves dancing and says that is her secret to her own fitness.

Ashia shares recipes for Puri (which she says are great to make with kids), Roast lamb with a chilli rub, Chilli-basted roast chicken and Pavlova with rose cream, cardamom & salted caramel shards.

Auckland writer and cook Ashia Ismail-Singer is putting an eastern twist on Kiwi favourites such as roast lamb and pavlova and her recipes have caught the eye of a book publisher: My Indian Kitchen is the result.

Ashia's unique background includes time spent in Africa, the UK and finally New Zealand.

Her parents moved from Gujarat in India to the African republic of Malawi when India and Pakistan separated in 1947.

They were Memon people – Muslims of Indian origin who settled in Gujarat in the 8th century and brought with them their culinary culture – and ingredients like rosewater, saffron, cardamom and pomegranates.

Chilli roast chicken “She mixed eastern and western things together. We’d come home from school and have spicy shepherd’s pie. If we were having a roast dinner it would be a chillibasted chicken.

“Those influences stayed with me and it’s been lovely sharing those in the book.”

“I’m married to a Kiwi so what I’ve done with my cooking is there’s an eastern influence to some of the western dishes."

This flair for fusion is something Ashia inherited from her mother, she says, who, when lacking many basic ingredients in Malawi, made pedestrian English food come to spicy life.

Among those Malawi-inspired favourites are masala baked beans.

An Indian summer in Australia - APURV SHUKLA

Indian Cricket team begins its highly anticipated tour of Australia with the first of three T-20 games on the 21st of November in Brisbane. The two month long tour encompasses three One day internationals and four Test matches alongside the T-20 games. India and Australia first played against each other in 1947. Indian cricket teams were historically poor travellers. The tide began to turn in the early 2000's, under Sourav Ganguly’s captaincy.

He captained a largely young side, unscathed from defeats overseas and instilled in them a belief to win in adverse conditions. This trend has carried on and strengthened first under first M.S Dhoni and now Virat Kohli.

India now is no pushover when it comes to overseas conditions. They are an excellent limited over’s side. With the World Cup in England next year, a series against Australia will be a good gauge of the progress the team has made. The search for a solid middle order batsman seems to have ended with Hyderabad’s Ambati Rayudu coming good in the series against West Indies. Also Kedar

Jadhav has become a certainty in the squad with his off spin complementing his efficient lower order batting. The new ball combination of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah is one of the best in the world.

India has never won a Test series in Australia. However, they have managed to draw a series there under Ganguly (2003–04). The past two overseas tours have led India to lose Test series against South Africa and England. Both series produced close contests and excellent cricket, but a series win eluded the Indian team. The results left the fans with the feeling of being so near yet so far when it comes to Test Cricket. The recurring theme of both these tours was the inability of Indian openers to produce good starts and of the bowlers not being able to get rid of the lower order batsman cheaply. Australian batting looks depleted in the absence of David Warner and one of the best batsman in the world- Steven Smith. They have experimented by having two vice captains in a team. One of them – Mitchell Marsh, after a disappointing recent series against Pakistan is under pressure to hold his place in the team.

The strength of Australia though is their bowling attack. Mitchell Starc leads an excellent and varied bowling line up with Nathan Lyon providing the spin option.

India is a cricketing powerhouse.

They have the richest Cricket board in the world and the game is followed passionately by millions of Indians worldwide. India have selected a strong squad for the tour which has plenty of experience when it comes to playing in Australian conditions. Australian Cricket on the other hand is going through unsettled times. If ever the stars had to align for an Indian summer in Australia – 2018 might be it.

National government should apologise for failures at Pike River – Andrew Little (Continued news from pg. 1)

The Minister responsible for Pike River re-entry, Andrew Little, says the previous government should make a public apology for its failures at the mine.

The government's independent adviser on the mine recovery operation, Rob Fyfe, has called for such an apology to the families of the 29 men who died in the mine explosions in 2010.

Mr Little said there were a number of failures in the aftermath of the disaster, including by the Department of Labour which was responsible for overall health and safety.

"It totally let down the families, the Pike River families, then in the aftermath of the tragedy, the failure to prosecute and the kind of dodgy buy-out that

happened that the Supreme Court has now ruled that is unlawful.

"The promise made to the families to do everything possible but then not fulfilling that promise."

Last year, the Supreme Court ruled that it was unlawful for WorkSafe to withdraw its prosecution of Pike River mine boss Peter Whittall in exchange for payments to the victims' families.

WorkSafe New Zealand initially laid 12 health and safety charges against Mr Whittall, but they were dropped after more than $3 million was paid to the victims' families.

On Wednesday, the government it will proceed with the re-entry of the Pike River Mine in February next year. - RNZ
