Bharatiya Mandir gearing up for Garba Mahotsav-2018 from 10th October to 19th October for the Garba Mahotsav. Mohan Bhai has performed at Bharatiya Mandir for three years previously as well, and this time also a group of four people is going to entertain the devotees at the Mandir for ten days.

The word “Navratri” is a conjunction of two words “nava” (meaning “nine”) and “ratri” (meaning “nights”). Spread over 9 nights and 10 days, it is the most sacred festivals in Hinduism where we worship Goddess Durga or Shakti, which represents the energy of the Universe, in her nine beautiful forms with great reverence.

The oldest temple of New Zealand, Bharatiya Mandir in Balmoral, Sandringham is preparing for its biggest annual, nine days event of Navaratri nights, starting from 10th October. The Mandir management has invited one of the most famous Garba group from Gujrat in India.

The Sur Gangaa Group from Bardoli, Gujrat, India headed by Mohan Bhai Patel is coming to perform at the Mandir

Navartri.

Prior to that, on Sunday, 23rd September the Ganesh visarjan (immersion) was also done by the Mandir. Two other temples Shirdi Sai Mandir and Shri Ram Mandir from Henderson also joined hands with Bharatiya Mandir for the Ganesh Visarjan. All up put together, around 160 people were part of the group which took Ganesh statues to immerse in the sea. A ferry was hired to

perform this ceremony and people bid good bye to their beloved Lord Ganesha praying him to come back again next year to give boon to all his devotees.

Bharatiya Mandir, as always, has been providing food (prasadam) on any such occasions and this time was also no exception. All devotees coming to temple devoured a sumptuous lunch served by the Mandir. The upcoming Garba Mahotsav is a free public event.

There are various reasons why Navratri is celebrated, and each has its own significance in different part of India.

Drone testing plans in Central Otago worries local flyers A tech start-up wants to use airspace in Central Otago to test large drones that could be used for long-range humanitarian and commercial work but local pilots are worried about safety.

Skybase in Christchurch has applied to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to use restricted airspace in the skies over Alexandra in Central Otago. But some pilots of light aircraft are worried it will shut them out, or even endanger them.

The firm's founder and chief executive Michael Read said for safety reasons, testing had to be done in a controlled environment.

Mr Read, a former Australian Air Force pilot, said upwards of $1 million had been invested in Skybase. Its focus is on using existing technology to advance the use of drones for commercial and humanitarian work.

Skybase wanted to use the airspace over a 565 square kilometre area above Alexandra to test whether, for example, unmanned

drones could be used for mapping natural disaster zones.

Mr Pearce said Skybase wanted to use airspace that, in some wind conditions, was the only place safe enough for light aircraft.

The application to the CAA said the proposed test area was designed so it would not impose on other pilots.

Mr Read said Alexandra was their first pick for its weather, small population and not too much air traffic. Mr Pearce said they were not against the idea - but how it was being handled. Comments about air traffic have riled some local aviators, and to a lesser extent, the Central Otago mayor.

Tim Cadogan said the council owned the Alexandra Aerodrome, and Skybase seemed a bit misguided in its perception the skies were not busy.

Mr Read said any restriction would be temporary, but they needed community support to continue. -RNZ

Local Stories Oxfam report on the tax affairs of multinational drug companies labelled misleading by Inland Revenue The Oxfam report claiming pharmaceutical companies in New Zealand are underpaying tax by some $21 million completely misrepresents the situation here, says Inland Revenue international strategy manager, John Nash.

“Obviously we can’t comment on specific taxpayers but taking a global profitability figure and applying it across the board, as this report does, cannot illustrate what’s really happening in this country,” he said.

“The report tries to apply a globally derived profit margin figure of 1516% to New Zealand drug company revenue of $519m and concludes that they have underpaid tax by $21 million.

This is clearly incorrect given the type of operations that multinational pharmaceutical companies actually undertake in New Zealand,” said Mr Nash.

He said the Oxfam methodology applied a global average profit margin to the New Zealand operations of pharmaceutical companies while at the same time acknowledging that profit margins were not uniform all over the world.

“The main driver of profitability in

this industry is the creation and development of intellectual property but such activities are not generally carried out in New Zealand.

“It’s important to examine what multinationals actually do in a specific country such as New Zealand and how value is added, before arriving at a conclusion that insufficient taxation has been paid. The New Zealand operations of pharmaceutical companies are almost entirely lower margin activities like distribution.

“We also have a very active regulator in Pharmac, which impacts the profitability of pharmaceutical companies here.”

Mr Nash said Inland Revenue is working closely with multinationals of all kinds operating in New Zealand to ensure compliance as well as working with the OECD in the collective effort to improve compliance by multinationals worldwide.

Auckland hospitals write off $53m in treatment costs for overseas patients Counties Manukau wrote off $31m, having recouped only a third of treatment costs from patients themselves and their insurers.

A spokesperson said it appeared more people were visiting its area with existing health conditions and without medical insurance.

As of last month, 10 patients were receiving dialysis at the Counties Manukau DHB, with a total patient debt of more than $1.7m.

A spokesperson said patients requiring treatment for an acute injury or illness were treated, regardless of their eligibility for funded services, and unrecovered costs were passed to a debt collection agency.

At Auckland DHB, more than 100 ineligible patients are seen each year at its Greenlane eye clinic alone.

Local Stories FAST work improves stroke outcomes Mount Ruapehu death of Indian man prompts review of safety measures

The Health Minister Dr David Clark has praised the FAST stroke awareness campaign, describing it as a key tool to help more stroke patients get the rapid treatment they need, while also enhancing health equity.

His comments came during a visit to Wellington Regional Hospital focussing on the FAST campaign, a joint development between the Ministry of Health, the Health Promotion Agency and the Stroke Foundation.

“This year’s campaign helps improve equity as it focusses on increasing stroke symptom awareness amongst Maori and Pacific peoples, while continuing to raise general awareness,” says David Clark.

“Since the launch in July, I’ve noticed the ‘FAST’ messaging throughout New Zealand, in both English and Te Reo Maori. It reinforces that people should call 111 if they experience or see someone else showing any signs of stroke.

“Taking action and calling 111 straight away gives people the best chance of recovering.”

A second death at Mount Ruapehu's crater lake in 12 months has prompted calls for people to take extra care at the top of the mountain.

A man's body was pulled from the lake by members of the group he was with yesterday afternoon. The death is being referred to the coroner.

Another man also died at the lake one year ago. narrated in Te Reo Maori as well as English, while the campaign has been supported on social media by a number of well-known Maori and Pacific peoples.

After meeting the Clinical Leader Stroke, Associate Professor Anna Ranta, during the visit, David Clark praised the teamwork involved in driving the FAST campaign.

“Wellington Regional Hospital exemplifies how all parts of the health system can work together to give patients the best chances of recovery from stroke. I was also privileged to meet patients who have recently had a stroke and was particularly impressed to see their resolve, and the dedication of health professionals helping them recover.”

Ruapehu District Mayor Don Cameron said the snow was becoming soft around this time of year, and people needed to be extra vigilant at high altitudes.

"I understand it's a skiier that's fallen in, but also apparently someone climbing also slipped on the ice and lost their ice axe," he said.

Mr Cameron said people venturing near the crater lake should take extra advice before heading up or stick to wellknown trails.

The Department of Conservation said it will be reviewing the safety measures in place.

Tongariro District's operations manager Bhrent Guy said they were working to provide more safety information about the area online.

"There's not much more we can do, we can't place signs up there due to the

physical limitations, plus it's within a very sacred area where we don't have signage and so our main tool is to go through media and have good information out there," Mr Guy said.

Local iwi has put a rahui in place around the lake which prohibits the public from accessing the area above the boundaries of the ski areas at Whakapapa, Turoa and Tukino until sunrise on Wednesday morning.

An American tourist also died while skiing on Mount Aspiring yesterday.

Police said the 35-year-old man was skiing downhill toward the Bonar Glacier when he fell and died.

Another person they were skiing with attempted first aid, but the man died at the scene. An investigation into his death is now underway. -RNZ

Politics Teachers are the Nation Builders Anil Sharma

NZ Peoples Party Primary and intermediate school teachers in New Zealand staged a oneday strike over salary rise and a bid for smaller class sizes on August 15. It was the first day of action called by the members of the union of Educational Institute after 24 years, and affected thousands of pupils by 27,745 teachers not being at work.

The fact is that teachers do not earn enough to be able to buy even the cheapest properties in Auckland. The cost of living in areas such as Auckland (and probably many other places) is pretty high. No wonder teachers are moving to cheaper areas, or out of the profession completely.

Although the pay is one of the reasons, there are also other reasons for leaving teaching that is contributing to these numbers. Wages are also low in New Zealand compared to teacher’s wages in most other developed nations.

The profession demands incredibly long working hours, most of them starting for work at 7.45 am and finishing at 5 pm. Teachers are not just dedicated but extremely hardworking and committed to the children despite the stress they face handling all kinds and temperaments of different children.

They are at an average, working until 8 or 9pm doing marking & preparation for the following day, working the majority of Sunday to stay on top of the workload. The average teacher can work up to and beyond 50 hours a week.

People argue saying if you want a lot of money, choose a profession that pays a lot of money. However, teaching is a very rewarding profession and most dedicated teachers would never trade their profession for any thing else because they are passionate about educating kids. Until teachers are paid in line with the private sector, I imagine this will be a general discontentment trend for a long time.

The Deputy PM Winston Peters said on a recent TV show that the decision to strike for the first time in 24 years was “hugely disappointing”. He also said that the strike action ''does nothing for the good of teachers and it is not going to get them anywhere."

On the other hand, Chris Hipkins, Minister of Education says, “I want to let you know that this is a Government that is listening to you”.

Is the strike justified? What could it achieve?

their concerns seemed to have fallen on deaf ears. As with many other sectors, the need for strike action in order to improve working conditions and pay has been massively increasing. I just hope we can bring more focus to the current levels of work conditions and crush what is now the biggest threat to our jobs and livelihood - privatisation.

For someone who thinks, 'If the teachers aren't happy with their lot then why did they choose teaching as a profession'? and the reply is, “Be very glad they did; your ability to read and write weren't self-taught. Neither was the physician or dentist you go to for treatment, or the nurse who really saves your life in a hospital, or the fireman who gets you out of the burning building or the police who come to your aid. Teachers are the one who help create all these professionals that society is dependent on.

The health and wealth of any society is to a great extent dependent on its teachers. Since teachers generally have high social awareness, they know there is a shortage in the Education industry and feel that they have a responsibility to stay, despite the low pay. If all teachers left the profession and the city in search of better prospects, the society is sure to collapse. Parents will have to give up work and home tutor their children or pay even more money to childminders, and a whole generation would miss out on an education.

If you speak up, there are chances you will be heard. The New Zealand teachers have shown the way. Striking doesn't automatically guarantee a victory, of course. But failing to fight back only guarantees a further retreat.

To be effective, strikes need to shut down operations and be clear and decisive about their support. They can either go on rolling regional strikes or press for a two-day national strike.

The constant mass rallies will not just reinforce a sense of solidarity among teachers but will also galvanise the community support. Parents should also come out in support of the teachers and join to show their solidarity.

No dates are set for further strike, but NZPP says it will continue to support the teachers in case the next round of talks with the Ministry of Education fail to make any progress. Anil Sharma signs off saying, “The message to the government is pretty clear. We want them to support the teachers by paving the way and leading New Zealand in creating a world class education system and in turn creating world class professionals”.

Kiwi families are being forced to dig further into their pockets as the Government makes ill-thought through decisions against expert advice. The Government’s own officials confirmed this week that gas and electricity prices will rise because of the Government’s harmful ban on new offshore oil and gas exploration. Officials warned the Government that this decision will cost New Zealanders billions of dollars.

And that’s before you consider the loss of jobs and the economic impact on Taranaki communities. Petrol prices have once again hit record highs, topping $2.40 a litre in many centres, but the Government is pushing ahead with its planned petrol price hikes, with another 4 cents per litre tax being added this Sunday.

It is irresponsible to increase fuel taxes when crude oil prices are at a four-year high, but this is just the latest act in a pattern of poor decision making by a Government which thinks it knows best. But not only are New Zealanders going to be paying even more at the pump, new data shows the median weekly rent in New Zealand reached a record high in August, further adding to the burden placed on New Zealand households. In what has become a trend for this Government, it ignored expert advice and forged ahead with its decision to reform the legislation that governs renters and landlords. Officials advised the Government that this move would drive landlords out of the market and hike rents up further – despite Housing Minister Phil Twyford insisting this wouldn’t happen.

These decisions all result in increases to the cost of living that will hurt all New Zealanders. And they will hit our poorest the hardest because they are most likely to rent, drive older, less fuelefficient cars, and have less flexibility

around household cooking and heating costs.

The Government refuses to rule out new and higher taxes following its review of the tax system. Its history of wasteful spending suggests New Zealanders will be paying even more.

India News Passenger offloaded from Kolkata- DAC approves procurement of bound flight for security violation Rs 2300cr-worth engines for T-72 tanks The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) accorded approval for the procurement of 1000 engines for fitment in T-72 tanks of the Army under 'Buy and Make' category at an approximate cost of Rs 2300 crore.

A passenger was offloaded from a Mumbai-Kolkata IndiGo flight after he tried to enter the flight's cockpit to charge his phone.

Following the incident, the passenger was disembarked from the flight and taken to the Mumbai Airport Police Station by the airline's security staff for further legal action.

As per reports, the passenger was let off after questioning.

Responding to a query posed by ANI, the airline said "While an IndiGo aircraft was on the ground, an unruly passenger tried to enter the cockpit stating that his mobile needs to be charged. Following standard

operating procedures, the captain operating 6E-395 flight from Mumbai to Kolkata (September 24, 2018) had initiated the offloading of the passenger on grounds of a security violation. As per the prescribed rules, entry into the cockpit is prohibited."

In a similar incident, a passenger on board a GoAir flight from Delhi to Patna on Monday attempted to open the rear door of the aircraft mid-air. A co-passenger raised an alarm, after which the passenger was intercepted by the crew.

Post-arrival, the passenger was handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) for further investigation.

Post the transfer of technology, most of these engines will be manufactured by the Ordnance Factories Board (OFB).

The engines will enhance mobility, agility, and acceleration of T-72 tanks making them more versatile and effective in the battlefield.

In an effort to reduce timelines in defence procurements and streamline DefenceProcurement Procedures, the DAC, in a meeting on Tuesday, also discussed and approved several amendments to the Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP) -16, the manual governing the defence procurements.

The changes include limiting the time period for executing Repeat Order to five years after the date of completion of warranty of final delivery in the previous contract. Repeat Order provisions have also been extended to procurements by other services like the Central Armed

Police Force (CAPF) and Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

The amendments also include permissions to commence with benchmarking of cost for equipment immediately on receipt of the trial report in the Service headquarter, legislating provisions for Exchange Rate Variations when pursuing procurement with an 'Option Clause', providing clarity on guidelines for easing the provisions for imposition of LD Clause in upgradation or alteration cases, automatic incorporation of applicability of the latest legislation or changes or amendment of any act or law, rules or regulations.

Ahead of polls, J-K DGP briefs Governor on security arrangements Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbagh Singh, along with Kashmir Inspector General of Police (IGP) Swayam Prakash Pani, met Governor Satya Pal Malik at Raj Bhavan earlier on Tuesday.

International News Ready to provide India everything Pakistan - the main deterrent on Shastri: Uzbek diplomat for peace in Afghanistan A London-based think tank recently concluded that the primary hindrance for peace in Afghanistan is Pakistan.

Special envoy of Uzbekistan President, Ilhom Nematov, on Tuesday said that Tashkent is always ready to assist and provide everything to New Delhi with regard to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Speaking at a seminar organised by The Democracy Forum (TDF), titled 'Afghanistan-the Challenges Ahead' on September 13, Lord Bruce, the President of the TDF said that Afghanistan's unique set of challenges reflects and reinforces the circumstances of its historical geography.

"India is always helpful. It is an important partner for us.

Uzbekistan is ready to provide everything for India," Nematov told in response to a question on whether Uzbekistanwill provide information to India with regard to the death of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Shastri died in Tashkent, which was then part of erstwhile Soviet Union, in the early hours of January 11, 1966, after signing the Tashkent Accord with Pakistan President Mohammad Ayub Khan on January 10, 1966. He reportedly died of heart attack, but there have been various theories on how the former Prime Minister passed away. Some even suspect he died of poisoning.

With the mystery surrounding Shastri's death, there have been demands for declassifying documents related to his demise.

She was also very critical about the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), and said it was fomenting corruption.

Questions were raised on the role of India and Pakistan in Afghanistan, to which Winter Botham opined that Pakistan would not be happy with a peace process that would not allow it to have a strategic depth in Afghanistan.

Similarly, Fair stated that she had only contempt for those who respected the role of the Pakistan Army in geopolitical affairs, as professional armies did not wage coups or run countries behind the scenes. A heated discussion also ensued when a member of the audience accused Pakistan of being responsible for thousands of murders in the country through its support to the Haqqani and other terrorist groups.

Business Tax Working Group publishes Interim Report The Tax Working Group is updating the public on its progress and thinking with the publication of its Interim Report today.

Chair Sir Michael Cullen says that the Group has conducted a wide-ranging review in order to assess the structure, fairness, and balance of the tax system.

The Group has also brought a broad conception of wellbeing and living standards to its work – including a consideration of Te Ao Maori concepts and perspectives on the tax system.

Thousands of New Zealanders – including iwi, businesses, and unions – have engaged with the Group over the past months. “The thousands of public submissions have given us a clear indication of the key challenges and opportunities for the tax system,” says Sir Michael.

“We see clear opportunities to improve the balance of the system by introducing environmental taxes, while measures to increase tax compliance would increase the fairness of the system. We have also identified important issues regarding the treatment of capital income in the tax system.”

The highlights of the interim report include: • The taxation of capital income. The Group’s work on capital income is not yet complete. The Interim Report sets out two potential options for extending

capital income taxation: extending the tax net to include gains on assets that are not already taxed; and taxing deemed returns from certain assets (known as the risk-free rate of return method of taxation). Feedback on these options will inform the recommendations in the Group’s Final Report in February 2019. The Group is not recommending the introduction of wealth taxes or land taxes.

Environmental and ecological outcomes.

The Group sees significant scope for the tax system to sustain and enhance New Zealand’s natural capital. Shortterm opportunities include expanding the Waste Disposal Levy, strengthening the Emissions Trading Scheme, and advancing the use of congestion charging.

• Housing affordability. The Group has found that the tax system is not the primary cause of unaffordable housing in New Zealand but is likely to have exacerbated the house price cycle. The Group’s forthcoming work will include consideration of the housing market impacts of the options for extending capital income taxation.

• GST. The Group is not recommending a reduction in GST, or the introduction of new GST exceptions. Instead, the Group believes that other measures (such as transfers) will be more effective in supporting those on low incomes.

• Business taxation. The Group is

not recommending a reduction in the company rate or the introduction of a progressive company tax. The Group is still forming its views on the best ways to reduce compliance costs and enhance productivity.

• The administration of the tax system.

The Group has identified several opportunities to improve tax collection such as increasing penalties for noncompliance as well as recommending a single Crown debt collection agency to ensure all debtors are treated equally.

A taxpayer advocate service is also recommended to assist small businesses in disputes with Inland Revenue.

Sir Michael says that extending the taxation of capital income will have a range of advantages and disadvantages.

The Group is still weighing up these issues and will come back with firm recommendations in its Final Report in February 2019.

“Extending the taxation of capital income will have many benefits,” says Sir Michael.

“It will improve the fairness and integrity of the tax system; it will improve the sustainability of the revenue base; and it will level the playing field between different types of investments. Yet the options for extending capital income taxation can be complex, resulting in higher compliance and administration costs.

“We have made some good progress in

setting out the main choices and options – but there is still a great deal of work to do before we provide our Final Report in February.”

The Group’s Final Report will provide full recommendations on all the issues examined by the Group, including the rates and thresholds for income tax.

“The Group will be mindful of the distributional impacts of any changes it recommends in its final report. It also recognises that some people may need time to transition to the new arrangements. “It’s also worth pointing out that any extension of capital income taxation would apply from a future date and would not have a retrospective element.

“Everyone on the Group believes we have a unique opportunity to improve the tax system. We are all determined to deliver recommendations in February that will make a positive difference for New Zealanders,” says Sir Michael.

Market Warms up as Prices Increase and KiwiBuild Grows The market is beginning to loosen its winter blues as we head into spring with some good news coming from REINZ that indicate the local market may be shaking off its trend of decreasing prices, as well as another twenty-five houses being added to the KiwiBuild projects to help get first-home buyers back into the market.

Property Market Warms Up for Spring Auckland housing market is showing signs of shaking off its winter chill as the median house price for Auckland saw its first year-on-year increase in six months according to the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand, rising 1.4% to $852,000 in August.

The increases have been following the trend of homeowners looking to the outer suburbs for cheaper properties, with solid increases including Manukau (10.1%) and Waitakere Cities (5.1%). In contrast, the North Shore saw a fall of -14.6% year-on-year, with a median of $915,000 – the lowest has been since January 2016.

Some of the eligibility criteria for KiwiBuild includes being a first-time buyer, being a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident, having an income of no more than $120,000 for a single purchaser, or no more than $180,000 for more than one purchaser, and must live in and own home for three years minimum.

KiwiBuild Continues to grow Twenty-five apartments in Onehunga have been added to the KiwiBuild initiative as the Government enlists a private developers' plans to bolster its KiwiBuild total. The @340 Onehunga properties will be available to eligible KiwiBuild buyers in August 2019 and includes six studio apartments priced from $380,000, 12 one-bedroom apartments priced from $490,000, and seven two-bedroom apartments priced at $600,000.

Trade Groups Sign Cooperation Agreement

The ‘Colombo Forum’ was signed on 20 September between the New Zealand India Trade Alliance (NZITA) and the New Zealand Sri Lanka Business Council (NZSLBC). The agreement is aimed at increasing trade between the two countries and New Zealand.

Chairman of the NZITA, Mr Giri Gupta says both member organisations are comprised of private sector innovators, entrepreneurs, professionals, and managers: “It makes sense that we work together to expand trade opportunities with the region”.

“There are huge growth opportunities in the region, but it is extremely hard to build the right relationships without assistance and market knowledge”.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Chair of New Zealand Sri Lanka Business Council Dr

While the markets of Sri Lanka and India are distinct, there are commonalities that mean this collaboration makes perfect sense. Geography is most obvious in this regard. Recipe / Food Tangy Fried Okra

A simply heavenly vegetarian dish cooked with fried onion, fragrant crushed coriander seeds and spicy chilli , then finished with a dusting of zingy mango.

Serves 4 • • • • • • • • • •

500g okra 3 tbsp mustard oil 1 onion, finely sliced 2 tsp coriander seeds 1 dried red chilli/1tsp chilli flakes 1 tsp salt 1 tsp turmeric 1 tsp garam masala 2 tsp amchoor powder (dried mango powder)

Wash and thoroughly dry the okra (kitchen roll is great for this).

Remove the tops and slice the okra in half lengthways. Place the coriander seeds and red chilli into the pestle and mortar and pound until you have a coarse powder, then leave to one side.

Heat the oil in a wok or non-stick pan on a medium heat, then stir in the sliced onions and cook until they just begin to brown.

Add the okra and fry for about ten minutes, stirring now and then.

Add the salt, turmeric along with the coriander and chilli mixture. Reduce the heat and leave the okra to cook for five more minutes (do not cover the pan).

Once cooked, remove from the heat, sprinkle with garam masala and dust with the armchoor powder to serve.

Served with: If you like to okra fairly crisp but if you prefer them slightly more soft continue to cook them for a little longer. These make a great accompaniment to any saucy dish and add a lovey contrast.

Legacy – what it means? ‘Legacy’

Gandhi @ 150 As, the whole world specially India, is preparing to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi which falls this year on 2nd October 2018, the biggest question today is that is Gandhi still relevant in today’s world?

As recently, President of India, Mr Ram Nath Kovind said about Gandhi ji that Mahatma Gandhi does not belong to India alone. He is India’s greatest gift to human kind and his name finds resonance across the continents. Mahatma Gandhi was the most influential Indian of the 20th century. He was the inspiration for our largely non-violent, inclusive and democratic freedom struggle. He remains the ethical benchmark against which we test men and women, political ideas and government policies, and the hopes and wishes of our country and its people. He is an icon, it is because of him that today world recognises India as a non-violent and peaceful country.

When we work for India with a pure will and free of caste and religious prejudice, we invoke Gandhi. When we strive for Swachh Bharat and a cleaner and more hygienic India, we invoke Gandhi. When we speak of rights of women and children, and of civil liberties of small and disadvantaged group of people, we invoke Gandhi. It clearly indicates that Gandhi ji and his principals are more relevant in today’s volatile and politically uncertain world.

The Government of India has formed a National Committee to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s 150 birth anniversary which has representation of all major political parties of India. The importance and seriousness of this event can be gauged as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the chair of this committee and his efforts are to make this occasion a global event. As Mr Modi strongly believes that this occasion should be celebrated in a manner that ensures Mahatma Gandhi continues to inspire future generations.

We all know that Gandhi ji had a very strong view about the common man, at the bottom of social strata to whom he called Harijan (God’s child) and the famers of the remote villages, these were the two most vulnerable communities hence he always insisted and promoted the sustainable village based industries ( Kutir Udyog ) which not only a tool to empower them in their village only but also stop their exodus to big cities in search of employment.

Gandhi ji believed that big industries could be good in some areas but largely they only help in creating and widening the gap between rich and poor. He would often say that the earth has enough for everyone’s need but not for everyone’s greed.

Mahatma Gandhi and his teachings are timeless and can become a mechanism for people around the world to understand India. The solution to a lot of contemporary problems can be found by following the path shown by Gandhi ji.

The misfortune of our country has been that after Mahatma Gandhi’s death, his last name became synonymous with a political family in India and they exploited this name to the hilt.

Mahatma Gandhi himself knew that the greed of power is so strong that it may derail his dream of Ram Rajya after getting the Independence, so he proposed to abandon the very party under the banner of which he fought the freedom movement, but it didn’t happen and outcome of that is before us.

We can only hope and pray while remembering Gandhi on his anniversary that better sense prevails in the minds of the people in politics in India, and they start following the visions and path shown by Gandhi and not just using his name for their vested interests. Jai Hind.

A person keeps money, jewellery, landed property, royalty, patent rights, etc. It is a similar concept as inheritance and heritage. It is something we inherit from our parents and pass on to our children. For his legal heirs, thus, a common man keeps legacy in the form of material objects. Usually heritage refers to material and economical inheritance, while legacy refers to immaterial and cultural inheritance. Some families pass objects and ideas down from generation to generation. These objects and ideas can also be called legacies. It may have to do with a person or many people.

Legacy at Various Levels: Historical Level: In historical terms, a legacy is something that is handed down from one period of time to another period of time. A historical legacy can be a positive thing or a negative thing.

For example, the invention of the wheel (for carts, as a pottery wheel, as a grinding wheel to help turn grain into flour, and as an early water wheel) in Mesopotamia can be seen as something positive. The development of slavery is a negative legacy.

Country Level: Sometimes countries or civilizations can leave a legacy.

Legacies are what we remember about a person or a country. What an individual or a country does today might, in the future, be regarded as being important enough to be thought of as a legacy from the 21st Century. In Athens, in Ancient Greece, people voted on their leaders. They created an early form of democracy. Greece & Ancient Rome voted for their leaders for many generations.

Body Level: It is temporal. It diminishes and finally gets extinct with the lapse of time.

Mind Level: A slightly evolved person like a poet, author, and artist keeps legacy of poetical ideas, philosophy, artistic contribution which a section of people enjoys for a considerable time. This legacy gives emotional and mental satisfaction which is supposed to be of a higher level than that at the material level.

Intellect Level: A talented scientist engaging himself in scientific research works and brings out new ideas and concepts which lead to production of new inventions. They make life more comfortable. Some of them narrow down the geographical boundaries and make the world claimed by the entire world. It lasts for a considerable length of period. Individuals can leave a historical legacy. For example, more than 2000 years ago the Greek Mathematician, Euclid of Alexandria, collected and wrote down ideas about geometry and measurement in a text called Elements.

Students still use these ideas when they learn about mathematics.

PM Jacinda has brief talk on tariffs with Trump at UN

(Continued from pg. 1) Ms Ardern remained expressionless during Donald Trump's half hour speech this morning in which he lashed out at Iran. He told world leaders that the regime in Iran was corrupt and its leaders sowed chaos, death and destruction.

"They do not respect their neighbours or borders, or the sovereign rights of nations, instead Iran's leaders plunder the nation's resources to enrich themselves, and to spread mayhem across the Middle East and far beyond."

Donald Trump said the US planned to impose further sanctions on Iran and called on all nations that import Iranian crude oil to cut their purchases substantially.

Mr Trump's speech continued his direction of taking making the United States more inward looking and promoting patriotism over globalism.

He also said the US would provide no support or recognition to the International Criminal Court.

"As far as America is concerned the ICC has no jurisdiction, no legitimacy and no authority."

Mr Trump also said his country would reconsider all its foreign aid.

"The United States is the greatest giver in the world, by far, of foreign aid, but few if anything give anything to us, that is why we are taking a hard look at US foreign assistance.

"Moving forward we are only going to give foreign aid to those who respect us and frankly are our friends."

Trump remarks no surprise Ms Ardern said later Mr Trump had made similar remarks before and she was not surprised by his comments to the UN. "He obviously takes a very particular view around issues of sovereignty, multilateralism and of course Iran, I don't think that would have surprised anyone today.

"From New Zealand's perspective, we were at the table the moment that the UN was formed alongside roughly 50 other countries. Multilateralism has always been one of our values and we'll maintain that."

Environment NZTA contractors caught dumping rubble in Whangarei stream

The agency has been forced to clean up its act after a local MP raised the matter with Northland Regional Council.

National MP for Whangarei Shane Reti was contacted by a constituent worried about a number of problems to do with roading near his house, which backs onto State Highway 1, about 15 minutes from the city.

The resident showed the MP the Oakleigh River Bridge, which had two metre wide expansion strips cut out across it.

About 30 pieces of road had been cut off the highway and pushed straight into the stream underneath, Dr Reti said.

"They still had fluorescent markings on them. They were on both sides of the dropline so they'd clearly been pushed off the bridge directly into the stream below," he said.

Dr Reti and the local who raised the problem were angry with the situation.

"At best it's lazy, at worst it's environmental vandalism.

"It wasn't hard to put a drop sheet or a gatherer on either side of the bridge, but no, it seemed the most convenient thing is just to brush it off and brush it into

Roading was a pollutant in the stream that feeds directly into the harbour, he said.

Dr Reti immediately contacted Northland Regional Council which got on to the transport agency.

The council told him the rubble was promptly removed, and the agency made it clear to its staff and contractors that the situation was unacceptable.

Ngatiwai Trust Board chairperson Haydn Edmonds said the dumping by New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) contractors was not good enough.

"It shouldn't have happened, a subcontractor should have been monitored by at least a sign-off from NZTA," Mr Edmonds said.

Staff at the transport agency refused to be interviewed, but said in a statement the contractors did not follow process.

The situation had since been rectified and it would work with its contractors to ensure it did not happen again, the agency said.

Dr Reti said monitoring needed to be done across the country to make sure care was taken with the environment after roading projects.

Wet winter could result in veggie shortages - grower skins, Mr Wilcox said.

A wet winter could lead to a vegetable shortage over winter, warns one of New Zealand's major growers.

The wet ground was very hard to work with - a few tractors had got stuck and some work had to be delayed, he said.

AS Wilcox grows up to 30,000 tonnes of potatoes a year, similar volumes of onions and 5000 tonnes of carrots on farms in Northland, South Auckland, Waikato, Ohakune and Canterbury.

"Usually when you have late planting the crops don't mature and yield as productive as they could do because their season has been short-tailed some level, so we'd expect crop yields to be relatively low as a consequence."

General manager for supply Brent Wilcox said continuous rain stopped the ground from drying out and that had impacted vegetable quality.

"Crops become very waterlogged, so they start to deteriorate in terms of their skin finish and cosmetic appeal, but also it starts to take it's toll in terms of rots.

So the recovering levels are a lot lower than what we would have hoped for," he said.

"If you look right at the front-end of the winter we were probably looking at

The 45-year-old took to social media to share the poster in which he can be seen wearing the police uniform, but his face is not visible.

The name on his badge reads 'Sanjay Kumar'. The image is superimposed with various clippings like 'Controversial Cop', 'Convict Dilshad Ahmed Gets Life Term', among others.

The film is based on the real-life incident of 'Batla House encounter', officially known as Operation Batla House. The incident took place on September 19,

2008, against Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorists in Batla House locality in Jamia Nagar, Delhi.

The movie will be helmed by Nikkhil Advani of 'Airlift' fame and written by Ritesh Shah of 'Pink' fame. Nikkhil had previously directed John in 'Salaam-EIshq'.
