Declutterin

Usually, when one intends to deep clean she begins by getting rid of things that are of no use to her. Things that do not serve any purpose in her daily life nor in the long run The old dishes that were last used ten years ago gets taken out, the clothes that are much too small, and the biscuits at the back of the pantry which expired five years ago and is no longer in production all gets tossed out Now, finally there is space for new things to be added. In a similar manner, we have to declutter our hearts and minds from all things which are taking up valuable space. Perhaps it is the jealousy we have for a fellow muslimah, or the hatred that is embedded deep in our hearts which we like to ignore, or perhaps, the boiling anger burbling inside of us. All of these are like heavy weights hampering

REVIVING ISLAM

It's spring again! The breeze is crisp, and the sun is warm. Flowers are blossoming, and everywhere you look, it seems as if the world is being coloured in vibrant paints. The chill of winter has left the air What once was dead has now come back to life. Can there ever be a doubt about resurrection when one is witness to all of these wonders? The trees whose branches were so bare are now dotted with emerald leaves, and peeking through the murky brown grass is lime coloured blades. Everything is being brought back to life. Now that the chill of winter has left the air, it's time to draw back your curtains, roll up your sleeves, and start to spring clean.

Hadhrat Maulana Shah Hakeem Muhammad Akhtar writes, Qutub Alim Hadhrat Maulana Rashid Ahmed Gangohi was once asked by someone if first Istighfar or Durood Shareef should be recited. He answered;

Once we are done decluttering, it is time to wash away the residue of those recently occupied spaces To do that we need a special cleaning solution made up of Istighfaar, seeking forgiveness for our sins, and Taubah, making a resolution to not go back A sincere taubah will wipe away all the stains of darkness.

“Do you first wash your dirty clothes or first apply 'Atr (perfume)?”

After all is done it is only right that one perfumes what she has cleaned. One must light the scent of Salawaat and let it fragrance all the chambers of the heart Let the perfume of Salawaat bring tranquility to the mind, for how sweet it is to send a gift of salutations to the most beloved of Allah, Muhammad the Rasul of Allah ﷺ.

Perfuming the abode

A little tidying up

SAFAR 1444 VOL. 1 | ISSUE 2

An important factor we must not forget is that although we might be done spring cleaning, it will become cluttered once again if we do not tidy it up every day. The heart is a constant project that must be tended to like a young plant that needs watering every day

Therefore first should the soul be purified from the dirt of sins through seeking forgiveness (Istighfar) and then the perfume of Durood Shareef should be applied."

Removing the stains

The people of Madinah used to called him Al Kāmil, The Perfect One Usaid ibn Hudhairr was a warm and pleasant person He had a straight, strong and clear character He was intelligent and wise and he was someone who was blessed with giving right suggestion

Usaidd embraced the opportunity and embraced Rasulullah ﷺ He told Rasulullah ﷺ that this is what he intended all along (Abu Dawood)

Gleaming lamps

Umm ul Mu`mineen, Sayyidatunaa Aaishaaaa states, ‘Sayyiduna Usaid Bin Hudhair is among those who are superior ’ (Musnad Ahmad) Sayyiduna Aboo Bakr As Siddeeq q used to respect him a lot and used to say that ‘no one has any differences with him’ (Usud ul Ghaabah)

Usaid Ibn Hudhair was the leader of the tribe Banu Aws in Madinah He inherited this position from his father, who was a strong fighter in the time of Jaahiliyyah. When Rasulullah ﷺ sent Mus'ab ibn Umair to Madinah to preach Islaam, the leaders of the tribes of Madinah; Sa'ad ibn Muaadh and Usaid Ibn Hudhair were discussing the stranger that came Sa'add told Usaidd to go and deter Mus'abb When Usaid went out with a spear in his hand, Mus'ab told him to listen to him first before doing anything Usaid was a man of intelligence and understanding, he stuck his spear in the ground and listened to Mus'ab Mus'abb recited the Quraan Shareef and explained the principles of Islaam When Mus’ab finished his words, Usaid Ibn Hudairr was overwhelmed and he shouted, "How good these words are! What do you do if you want to embrace this religion?" Mus’abb said, "Purify your body and clothes, and bear true witness, then pray. " Usaid accepted Islaam quickly.

Usaid ibn Hudhair

Sayyiduna Usaid Ibn Hudhairr passed away in the month of Sha'baan 20 yeas after Hijrah His janaazah salaah was performed by Umarr At the time of his demise, he was indebted of 4,000 dirhams He possessed a piece of land that generated an annual income of 1,000 dirhams The lenders wanted to sell that piece of land Upon this, Sayyiduna Umar r asked them, ‘Could you agree on taking 1,000 dirhams every year?’ They replied, ‘We agree on this ’ So every year, they started taking 1,000 dirhams (Siyar A’laam un Nubala)

Once Usaidd was in a gathering with Nabi ﷺ and Nabi ﷺ playfully poked him Usaidd replied that he was hurt to which he was given a chance to take retribution Usaidd then told Nabi ﷺ that it wouldn’t be equal as he had no upper garment, so Nabi ﷺ removed his upper garment and with this

Once, Usaid Bin Hudhairr and Abbaad Bin Bishr Ansaarii left from the blessed court of Rasulullah ﷺ for their homes quite late at night In the dark night, when they couldn’t find the way, the staff of one of the companions all of a sudden lit up and both personalities kept walking in its light When the ways of both of them separated, then the staff of the second companion also lit up and both of them reached their homes in light (Ibn Hibban)

His recitation of the Holy Quraan was extremely sweet and beautiful. One time, whilst reciting Surah Baqarah he saw a cloud filled with lanterns descending, and out of fear he stopped. He explained the event to Rasulullah ﷺ who informed him: Those were angels coming closer to hear your voice If you continued reading until the morning, the people would’ve all been able to see them!”

How a Sunnah lifestyle can alleviate wastage

Food loss which occurs before it reaches the consumer due to issues in storage, production etc

02.

01.

Eye on the times WASTAGE

In recent years, the amount of edible food that is being discarded has drastically increased. Food is wasted at every stage of the production process, from farmers to transport to merchants to consumers. Food waste is categorized into two components:

Food waste which is fit for consumption but is consciously discarded

enough energy making food that is not consumed to power the city of Johannesburg for almost 16 weeks. Something to be said for a nation that regularly faces load shedding Additionally, the water used in production waste could fill 600,000 Olympic sized swimming pools

In Islaam wasting food is a grave sin It is not permissible to throw out any food. Rather, leftover food that is still good should be given to those in need or food that is gone bad should be given to the animals. Once Rasulullah ﷺ found a date in the road and said “Were it not that I am afraid that it came from the zakaah, I would have eaten it.” [Bukhaari]. Wastage has been ingrained in us If something falls on the floor we immediately throw it in the bin. However, what we have been taught to do is to pick it up, remove the dirt from it and then we should consume it. Rasulullah ﷺ said, “If a morsel of food falls on the floor, then wipe off any filth and eat it. Do not leave it for the Devil.” [Muslim]

SAFAR 1444 VOL. 1 | ISSUE 2

30 million tonnes of food are produced annually in South Africa Imperfections prevent an estimated 103 million tonnes of perfectly edible food every year from reaching people's stomachs Accordingly, a third of all food produced ends up in landfills. Consumers frequently forget that fruits and vegetables are not produced in a factory and are not regular in size and shape because they have been trained to demand uniformity and perfection in fresh produce. Unevenly sized or simply imperfect looking vegetables are placed aside for an informal market or for charity, and often end up being thrown away due to being left out. According to studies, South Africa annually wastes

Rasulullah ﷺ said, “There will be men from my nation who eat a variety of foods, drink a variety of drinks, wear a variety of clothes, and are boastful in their speech. These are the worst of my nation.” [al Mu’jam al Kabīr]

Food waste doesn't just refer to wasting food. It could also indicate making food more than one person can consume, and this significantly applies to us Muslimahs Daily preparation of ostentatious meals is not only foolish, but it is also not cost effective Rasulullah ﷺ informs us that a person only needs to consume a few morsels to maintain his life

Islaam encourages us to exercise moderation in all spheres of life A Sunnah lifestyle is truly a healthy lifestyle. Obesity, as well as diets and other restrictive eating regimens, won't exist if one lives in accordance with the Sunnah.

Rasulullah

ﷺ said “A believer eats in one intestine, and a kafir (disbeliever) or a hypocrite eats in seven intestines.” BUKHAARI ﻦﻴﻄﻴﺸﻟا نﻮﺧإ اﻮﻧﺎﻛ ﻦﻳرﺬﺒﻤﻟا نإ ارﻮﻔﻛ ﻪﺑﺮﻟ ﻦﻄﻴﺸﻟا نﺎﻛو Surely the wasteful are ˹like˺ brothers to the devils. And the Devil is ever ungrateful to his Lord. SURAH BANI ISRAEEL AYAT 27

SAFAR 1444 VOL 1 | ISSUE 2

Wasting food should never be an option. Whether one has or does not Food is a Ni’mat from Allah and we should be mindful of it There are many in the world who go to sleep as the sun sets, hungry, and when the sun rises they are still hungry

With the war between Russia and Ukraine the global food insecurity has been exacerbated Some families are unable to afford a simple meal to put on the table, thus spending many nights in a state of hunger In Islaam the aspect of Sadaqah is greatly stressed upon. Sadaqah makes sure that both parties recieve something The giver receives everlasting reward in the Aakhirah and the receiver has something that he might have needed. Islaam is not only a religion, it is also a way of life teaching mankind how to be human

In the era of supermodels and actresses, influencers and bloggers, one will come to find that young Muslimahs do not know the details and history of the Ummahaatul Mu'mineen. Rather, they are mesmerised and have memorised everything there is to know about their western “role models”. It might be that one or two famous stories of the Umahaatul Mu’mineen are known to them, yet, there is no interest to learn more about these dazzling damsels.

DAZZLING DAMSELS

Khadeejah was a successful and fortunate tradeswoman. One of Sayyidah Khadeejah’s caravans was equal to all of the caravans of the Quraish. However, she did not travel out of Makkah for her business Rather, she used to hire men on her behalf and send them to Syria with her caravan Sayyidah Khadeejah should not meet with the traders herself, in fact, her slaves used to carry out her instructions for trading under the watch

Her lineage and early life

At the age of fifteen, she was married to Abū Hālah ibn Zurārah ibn al Nabbāsh al Tamīmī, with whom she had two children, Hind and Hālah. After he passed away she was married to Atīq ibn ‘Ā’id ibn ‘Umar ibn Makhzūm, with whom she had a daughter Hind bint ‘Atīq

Stories of pious Muslimahs from the past

Sayyidah Khadeejah bint Khuwaylid was born in Makkah to a father named Khuwaylid bin Naufal and a mother Faatimah bint Zaa'idah. The family of Sayyidah Khadeejah was well known and respected They possessed nobility, wealth and authority Sayyidah Khadeejah is related to the Prophet ﷺ through his grandfather Qušayy, making her the closest relative to him from amongst all his wives

Undoubtedly Khadeejah was one of the best women to have walked this earth To enumerate all her virtues would not be possible in this brief treatise. Listed here are some of Khadeejah’s accolades Khadeejah was the first wife of Rasulullah ﷺ When he was married to her, he did not marry another lady. She was the mother of his children Rasulullah ﷺ mentions regards to her:

Her marriage and life with Rasululullah ﷺ

Sayyidah Khadeejah possessed a high level of Hayaa (modesty) Her Laqab (nickname) was At Taahirah, the pure lady. She was well known amongst the women of the Quraish, who would visit her to benefit from her generosity and grace She was known as Sayyidatu Nisaail Quraish; the leader of the women of the Quraish. When she would go to perform Tawaaf around the Ka’bah, they would go with her and speak to her about important matters Once a Jew came and called out to them whilst they were by the Ka’bah saying: “O women of Quraish, a prophet will appear in this era, so whoever wants to become his wife, then let her do so” The women that were surrounding Khadeejah became annoyed on her behalf and threw stones at him

of her slave Maysarah. When the sister in law of Sayyidah Khadeejah ; Safiyyah bint Abdul Muttalib mentioned her nephew Muhammad ﷺ to Khadeejah she hired him because of his trustworthiness and honesty. Sayyidah Khadeejah was a woman of honour and high status She was extremely refined in character.

She was a loving and caring wife She always sought to make Rasulullah ﷺ happy, so much so that she even gifted her slave Zaid bin Haarithah to Rasulullah ﷺ because he took a liking to him Khadeejah loved Rasulullah ﷺ very much, despite being a wealthy woman she did all her household chores herself with happiness. When Nubuwwat came to Rasulullah ﷺ she accepted the message of Islaam wholeheartedly and willingly. There was no need for him to raise his voice, or exert himself Instead, she took away his fatigue, kept him company through his isolation, and alleviated every hardship

After seeing what an honest and trustworthy man Rasululullah ﷺ was, Khadeejah desired to marry him. Hamzah ibn Abdul Muttalib approached her uncle ‘Amr ibn Asad ibn ‘Abd al ‘Uzzā on his behalf, seeking her hand in marriage The dowry was fixed at twenty young camels, and the two were married; this being 15 years before his ﷺ prophethood began. At the time he ﷺ was 25 years old and she was 40

Virtues of Sayyidah Khadeejah

She was not only the first woman to accept Islaam but, she was also the first person to accept Islam Rasulullah ﷺ loved Khadeejah greatly. He would often slaughter a sheep on her behalf and would distribute the meat to her friends Aa’isha says with regards to Khadeejah : Never did I feel jealous of any

SAFAR 1444 VOL. 1 | ISSUE 2

Khadeejah was the only lady to receive Salaam from Allah In a Hadeeth Shareef narrated from Abu Hurairahkkkkit appears: Jibreel came to the Nabi ﷺ, and he said, “Oh Rasulullah ﷺ, here is Khadijah coming to you with a dish of stew, food, and drink When she arrives before you, greet her with peace on behalf of her Lord and myself. Give her glad tidings of a palace in Paradise made of reeds, wherein there will be no turbulence, nor fatigue” When Khadeejah heard this she did not reply:

May peace be upon Allah

woman as I was jealous of Khadeejah. She had died three years before Rasulullah ﷺ married me. I often heard him praise her, and his Lord, the Exalted and Glorious, had commanded him to give her the glad tidings of a palace of jewels in Paradise: and whenever he ﷺ slaughtered a sheep he presented its meat to her female companions As Suhayli said: "She was given the glad tidings of a house in Paradise because she never raised her voice over that of Rasulullah ﷺ, nor did she ever bother him"

Because that is not appropriate. Rather, she replied, “Certainly Allah He is the Giver of Peace, and upon you and upon Jibreel is peace”

The tenth year after Nubuwwat was a very difficult year for the believers. They were boycotted in the valley of Abu Taalib for three years and it had taken its toll on the dear uncle of Rasulullah ﷺ; Abu Taalib, and the beloved wife of Rasulullah ﷺ; Khadeejah

Khadeejah passed away at the age of sixty five The grief of Rasulullah ﷺ was so great due to losing two dear relatives that many historians record this year as ’Aamul Huzn’ The Year of Sorrow. Rasulullah ﷺ was extremely grieved by the passing of Khadeejah that many people thought that this grief might result in his death. [Ibid] Preparations for the burial of Khadeejah took place at a place called Hujun Rasululah ﷺ lowered the Janaazah into the grave himself. This was before the laws of Janaazah were prescribed Thus passed away the Mother of the believers. A Lady of nobility and honour. One who sacrificed her life for Islaam She stood with Rasulullah ﷺ when the people did not. She believed in him when the people belied him. May Allah make us like our beautiful mother Khadeejah

Later, when many of the Companions had passed away, the same Ansāri friend would see me with the people gathered around, asking me questions. He would remark: "That youngster was smarter than I was."

Al Bidāyah Wan Nihāyah, Volume 8, Page 700-701

Being a young boy when Nabi ﷺ passed away, I said to an Ansāri friend: "Let's go to the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ and learn from them, since there are still many alive."

Abdullah Ibn Abbās then says:

I left him and continued alone in pursuit of knowledge. It would sometimes happen that I would arrive at the house of a man who had heard some hadeeth from Nabi ﷺ while he was taking his afternoon nap. I knew that if I were to seek permission to enter, he would definitely have allowed me. However, preferring that he remain comfortable and at ease, I would lay down at his door (in wait), using my cloak as a pillow. The wind would blow dust in my face by the time the person would come out of his house. He would notice me and exclaim: "O cousin of the Messenger of Allah! What brings you here? Why didn't you send for me, I would have come to you? " But I would say: "No, it is more appropriate for me to come to you. I heard that you narrate a certain hadeeth from Nabi ﷺ and I would love to hear it directly from you."

Abdullah Ibn Abbās narrates:

The Ansāri replied: "How surprising of you, Ibn Abbās! Do you think anyone will need you when there's still such great Companions alive?"

A Journey to Jannah

1: The Beginning

SAFAR 1444 VOL 1 | ISSUE 2

Our journey towards Jannah begins right here in this Dunya. By preparing for our next life and making sure that we are doing enough to make our stay in the Aakhirah a comfortable one Our example is like the example of a man who plans on moving abroad. He cannot leave and move instantly He first has to sort out his life at home. He sells his furniture and house, his cars and clothes, and most importantly, he has to make sure that he will be able to afford to live in the new country He will have to find a job, buy a house, and find suitable means of transportation He will have to make sure that his new life is as comfortable as it was in his hometown, if not even more Imagine the stupidity of a person who sells up everything and moves to a new place without making any preparation beforehand. Similarly, imagine how it will be the day we arrive in the Aakhirah only to realize that there is no share for us An orchard with no trees Now, it is too late to make any provisions A wise man is he who cultivates his Jannah with the trees of Tasbeeh and Tahmeed, with palaces of 'Ibaadah and righteousness, so that when he enters his final abode, he is pleased with what he has sent forth Our preparation for the Hereafter comes to an end and we officially embark on our journey to the Aakhirah when our souls are about to leave this Dunya. Two angels descend from the heavens with a silken shroud and perfume from Jannah. Malakul Maut, the Angel of Death, is also with them, and he says to the Mu'min, "Come out, come out, to a luxury from your Lord that you are going to receive, Oh beautiful, pure soul,".

Rasulullah ﷺ says that the soul of a believer flows out of the body just like how a drop of water spills out from a jug Softly, smoothly, and beautifully Then, the two angels will take the soul from Malakul Maut as soon as they can, and they'll enshroud it with a silken cloth and fragrance it with the most pleasant musk Thereafter, they'll take him to the skies, and when they reach the first sky they will request for the gates to be opened The gatekeepers will ask "Who is this beautiful soul?" And they'll reply referring to the Mu'min with the best of names he was called in the Dunya. "This is so and so, the son of so and so," and this will happen at each gate until they reach a very high point. Allah ﷻ will tell them to take the soul to see its property and kingdom in Jannah By the time the Janaazah is ready to be buried, Allah ﷻ orders them to return the soul to its body When the Janaazah is placed in the Qabar, two angels will come to him; Munkar and Nakeer They are unimaginable creatures. Their countenance is black and blue, their eyes are like lighting and their voices are a deafening thunder They will carry with them such a whip that if the whole world were to gather to lift it up, they would not be able to. They will ask the deceased three questions: "Who is your Rabb? What is your Deen? What do you say about this man?" The believers will reply with ease, for it is a promise of Allah the Almighty in the Holy Quraan

The word Safar can linguistically mean ‘empty’ Scholars have therefore said that the month is named Safar because:

It was first named when it fell during the winter season and provisions in Makkah were scarce. So pilgrims and the inhabitants of Makkah left their houses ‘empty’ when they went out to gather food.

After the sacred month of Muharram, the Makkans would go out on expeditions which would leave their enemies’ homes ‘empty’

What Wshould hat should be bdone e done

1) Instead of complaining and criticizing, we should rather think of all those who have nothing to eat and make shukar unto Allah for giving us food to enjoy

2) Always eat with the mindset that Allah , The Creator of everything has given us - weak Insaan - this food to eat. So how can we complain when the King of all kings has given us sustenance?

1) It shows ungratefulness for the blessings of Allah Ta’ala given to us 2) Hurts the feelings of the person who cooked/prepared it 3) Makes Allah Ta’ala unhappy with us. 4) Removes barakah/blessings from sustenance. 5) Goes against the Sunnah of our beloved Nabi ﷺ.

Dear Muslimah, The times in which we are living are indeed very different from the times in which our parents lived. Our world is ever changing and fast paced, constantly in a state of friction. What was once unheard of has now become the norm in our very own homes. The world itself has changed drastically The home that was once a kingdom for a believing woman has become a prison where she cannot wait to escape. Adopting the ways of the west, Muslimahs have taken fancy to fashioning their lives to fit a lifestyle outside of the home, making simple activities such as keeping the home neat and tidy, feeding one's family, and nurturing one's children something foreign and taboo. We, as women, now feel the need to do everything that men do Women now prefer to work outside of the home, attend boarding universities and madaaris, go out with friends for coffee to catch up, and so on. Something that must be understood is that there is nothing wrong with attending a madrassah to learn Deen, or even to earn a living for oneself, as long as the correct due time is given to one's responsibilities, and the limits of the Shariah are upheld In fact, it is only right that a woman learns about Islaam and reads Kutub about various topics and about the pious predecessors so that she may attain good character and understand her religion. However, the problem arises when the scale is unbalanced. When a Muslimah feels that mundane tasks such as looking after the house or cooking are something below her, and that even though she might be a wife, daughter, or mother, she would rather work in an office than at home. Women now feel the need to be equal to their male counterparts, forgetting that the most important role of a Muslim woman is to be a wife and a mother. Wives and mothers are the believers' backbones. They are the ones who nurture nations. The darkness of feminism has injected its poison into our hearts We feel it is beneath us to even keep our living spaces neat and tidy, simply because why must women do all the work? Such nonsensical thinking must be pulled out from the roots. Those women who crave independence have not for one moment lived a lifestyle of independence. It is not easy for a woman to be the sole source of income. It is not easy for a woman to go out of the house and do errands If a Muslimah has a mahram to look after her, why is it so hard to accept?

DEAR Muslimah

. . . SAFAR 1444 VOL. 1 | ISSUE 2

It is disheartening to see young Muslimahs not taking any interest in household activities and leaving their homes in a mess A Mu'min's house should be neat and tidy at all times in a manner where guests are able to arrive at any time. Even the feeding of guests carries tremendous mountain loads of reward, but we are too lazy to cook So much reward can be achieved just by entertaining, but we refuse to embrace our femininity.

May Allah Ta'aala be pleased with us all.

The question might arise, but many men do not uphold the teachings of Islaam as they ought to be upheld. It might be true, but we, as individuals, should focus on rectifying ourselves and Allah will let everything fall into place. We must get rid of the ways of the West. The ideologies of feminism and gender equality are all un Islamic. Women cannot and will never be equal to a man, and likewise, a man cannot and will never be like a woman Each has their own strengths and weaknesses, and each has been given a responsibility. A man must go out of his home and earn a living for his family. His duty is to go out and spread the Deen of Islaam in the open. The duty of a woman is to look after her home, husband, and children, whereby she earns the reward of all his efforts as well Her duty is to learn and propagate deen in the confines of her home, perhaps by teaching her children or her helpers. Nobody is saying that a woman must be illiterate and ignorant regarding Islam A woman can be the Raabiyah Basriyyah of her time if she wants to, but everything has its own time.

Islam is not a narrow religion. The branches of Deen spread far and wide. Everything can be a means of us earning reward. Our intention just needs to be rectified

It is so easy for a woman to tread the path of the Auliyaa without even doing any extra nawaafil, just by being a good Muslimah, mother, wife, and daughter By protecting the Izzat of her husband, nurturing and instilling correct Islamic morals in her children, and by respecting her parents, a woman can transcend the ranks of the Auliyaa with ease. Any cleaning she does becomes an Ibaadah, any meal preparation becomes an Ibaadah, and any mundane activity becomes an Ibaadah simply by the intention of reward

Nabi ﷺ has said: "If a woman does her five (daily prayers), fasts her month (Ramadan), guards her chastity, and obeys her husband, it will be said to her: Enter whichever of the gates of Paradise you want."
