REVIVING ISLAM

The month of Sha'baan is only second to the month of Ramadaan in terms of virtue, greatness, and blessings. Being the eighth month of the Islaamic Calender it is a glimpse into the wonders of the holy month Ramadaan Rasūlullah ﷺ emphasized the greatness of this month both verbally and practically. It was a month where he ﷺ would fast abundantly, and when questioned about his ﷺ doing so, he replied: It is a month in which deeds are raised towards the Lord of the worlds Therefore, I like my deeds to be raised whilst I am fasting ” (An-Nasa’ī) In this month lies a very special night. A night where Allah Ta'aala allows His servants to reap from His infinite mercy This night is known as Laylatul Barā'ah and it occurs on the 15th of Sha'baan There are many Ahādith which proves the great merit of this night. Some says that the night of Laylatul Barā'ah is not auspicious because there lies a difference of opinion regarding

the auspiciousness of this night among the authorities and that the Ahādith which proves its virtue are weak. However, inspite of the existence of such difference of opinion, it is erroneous to claim that the 15th Night of Sha'baan has no origin and no substantiation in Islaam Unlike the bid'ah practices which are unanimously condemned and prohibited by all authorities of Islam, the auspiciousness of the 15th Night of Sha'baan is upheld by numerous illustrious personalities of Islam

Those who reject the validity of the holiness of this Night do so on the basis that the narrations concerning the 15th Night of Sha'baan are 'Weak', hence should be discounted. It should, however, be remembered that the designation 'Dhaeef' (Weak) in the terminology of the Muhadditheen is a word of technical import It does not mean that a 'Dhaeef' narration is fabricated and should be

SHA’BAAN 1444 VOL 1 | ISSUE 7

On this auspicious Allah Ta’aala turn attention towards those who repent mother Aa’isha ﺎﻬﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر reported that Rasūlullah ﷺ said, “This is the middle Night of Sha’baan Allah emancipates in it a large number of the people from the Fire, more than the number of the hair growing on the sheep of the tribe, Kalb But He does not cast a glance at a person who associates partners with Him, or at a person who harbours malice in his heart (against someone), or at a person who severs family ties, or at a man who leaves his clothes extending below his ankles, or at a person who disobeys his parents, or at a person who has a habit of drinking wine ”

Targeeb wat Tarheeb, vol 2, pg 118 authority of Imam Bayhaqi

We are desperately in need of Allah Ta'aala to glance at us with mercy and forgiveness How unfortunate it would be if we spend this night performing Ibaadah, yet harbour malice in our hearts, or we disobey our parents, only to not receive a glance of mercy from our Rabb! A grudge is not worth our own salvation. May Allah Ta'aala save us.

What types of ‘Ibaadah are stipulated?

No specific acts of worship are stipulated for the 15th of Sha'baan and a person is free to perform any acts of Ibaadah (recitation of the Qur’aan, prayers etc) he or she wishes However, it must be done individually (and not collectively in the Masjid) Cooking special meals, illuminating houses and Masaajid, and the bursting of fireworks are all baseless innovations

On this night, the events for the coming year are recorded Remain awake as much as possible and try to wake up for Tahajjud Salaah. It is Sunnah for the men to visit the Qabrastaan as was done so by Rasūlullah ﷺ

It has been previously stated that it was the noble practise of our dear and beloved Sayyidina Rasūlullah ﷺ to fast frequently during this month of Sha’baan. However, one should avoid fasting after the 15th of Sha’ban to keep his strength for Ramadan (Sunan Nasai, hadith: 2923).

QaariMuhammadTayyib

Moulânâ Muhammad Ahmad Qâsimî ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر was the son of Moulânâ Qâsim Nânotwî ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر He served as the principal of Darul Uloom Deoband for forty years He initially had two sons and a daughter, both of whom died infancy After then, he was childless for a considerable amount of time. The elders of the Dârul Ulûm were worried because they wanted the descendants of Moulânâ Qâsim Nânotwî

to live on. One day Sheikhul Hind

ﻪﻤﺣر called Moulana Abdus-Samî'

to ask the saint to make supplication for Moulânâ Muhammad Ahmad ﻪﻤﺣر

and instructed him to see a saint in Fatehpûr whose du'âs were accepted regarding children He was instructed by Sheikhul Hind

. Moulânâ Abdus-Samî ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر complied with instructions. The saint invited him to visit the following day and informed Moulânâ Abdus-Samî' ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر that he had supplicated and that his du'â had been accepted He said that he had received the joyful news that Moulânâ Muhammad Ahmad ﷲﻪﻤﺣر would be granted a son who would grow up to be a hâfiz, qârî, âlim, and a hâjî. The du'â manifested in the form of Qârî Muhammad Tayyib ﷲﻪﻤﺣر, who was born in Deoband in Jumâdath-Thâniyah 1315 A H (1897) His lineage links up to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر and his grandfather was none other than Hujjatul Islaam Moulânâ Muhammad Qâsim Nânotwî ﷲﻪﻤﺣر, a revered scholar and saint in the Islaamic world who laid the cornerstone for Dârul 'Ulûm Deoband. Qârî Tayyib ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر was accepted into Dârul 'Ulûm at the age of seven. At his admittance ceremony, where Bismillah was recited to begin his schooling, many of the great elders were there He was given the assignment of learning how to recite the Holy Qur'ân from Qârî 'Abdul Wahîd Khân Ilâhabâdî ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر. At the tender age of eleven, in the year 1326 A.H., he had memorized the entire Qur'aan. He had a powerful, melodious voice, and his teachers would listen to his recitation with great interest Moulânâ Rashîd Ahmad Gangohî ﷲﻪﻤﺣر used to call him to recite the Qur'ân His recitation would made Hadrat Gangohî ﷲﻪﻤﺣر very happy, and Hadhrat would to give him a lot of du'â. He took bay'ah (pledge of allegiance from Sheikhul Hind ﷲ

passed away Thereafter, Qârî Tayyib

When Qârî Tayyib ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر first went to Bombay, the Ahle Bid’ah (innovators) spread allegations against him and labeled him the worst kâfir since he was related to all the elders of Deoband due to being their student or being related to them. Coincidentally, when he delivered a talk, more than 30 000 people attended it He spoke for approximately three hours and completely awed the audience After giving this address, he was called to give presentations in all sections of Bombay, especially in those where opponents of the 'Ulamâ of Deoband were quite vocal. The duration of these discussions was 29 days. His lectures drew sizable crowds, and Moulânâ Ibrâhîm Balyâwî ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر awarded Qârî Tayyib the title of "Fâtih Bombay" (the conqueror of Bombay) Prior to this, the inhabitants of Bombay were in such a state that if any Deobandi Aalim visited a Masjid, the Masjid would be washed and cleaned after his departure. After Qârî Tayyib's ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر programmes, the same people who pointed a pistol at Moulânâ 'Abdush-Shakûr ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر threateningly, now took bay'ah at the hands of Qârî Tayyib ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر and repented from all their terrible activities. He was appointed the vice chancellor of Dârul Ulûm Deoband in 1341 A.H. during his teaching days. Then in 1348 A.H. he was appointed the chancellor. During his tenure as the chancellor, Dârul ‘Ulûm Deoband progressed tremendously Besides his service to Dîn in the form of teaching, he was an outstanding orator His talks became popular from his student days. He could easily speak on any Islamic subject no matter how intricate for two to three hours without any hesitation. His speciality was in unveiling the secrets of Sharîah

Qârî Tayyib ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر passed away in the month of Shawwaal 1403 A.H. During his last hours Muftî Sa’îd Ahmad and Moulânâ Sâlim were present. Qârî Tayyib ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر was completely at ease There was no sign of any tension on him nor was there any groaning Moulânâ Muhammad Ishâq ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر, the proprietor of Kutub Khânah Rahîmîyah came during the final moments when Hakîm Mahmûd was asking Qârî Tayyib ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر about his condition and the latter was replying. This indicates that he was at some ease. Hakîm Mahmûd placed his hand on Qârî Tayyib’s stomach to make a diagnosis. The latter breathed for about one and a half minutes and then passed away The people that were present did not even realize that he had left this world May Allāh Ta’aala grant him

Umm Salamah

In the era of supermodel influencers and bloggers, o find that young Muslimahs details and history of the Ummahaatul Mu'mineen. Rather, they are mesmerised and have memorised everything there is to know about their western “role models”. It might be that one or two famous stories of the Umahaatul Mu’mineen are known to them, yet, there is no interest to learn more about these dazzling damsels.

Her lineage and early life

Imagine a woman of outstanding beauty, intelligence, and eloquence. A woman who belonged to a noble clan of the Quraysh, one could call her the princess of her tribe. She was endeared to her people and loved immensely by her husband She was none other than Hind Bint Abi Umayyah more famously known as Umme Salamah

. Umme Salamah ﺎﻬﻨﻋ

was the daughter of a noble chief Abu Umayyah, who belonged to the Banu Makhzoom Tribe of the Quraysh. He was very well respected

was given the title of 'The Her mother's name was Aatikah Bint Aamir ibn Rabi'ah From her tribe, many chieftains of Quraysh hailed, such as Abu Jahal who was her father’s cousin and Khaalid bin Waleed ﻪﻨﻋﷲﻲﺿر, her first cousin Umme Salamah ﺎﻬﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر accepted Islam in its early days. Her first marriage was to Abdullah bin Asad who was known as Abu Salamah ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر. He was one of the early Muslims in Makkah, and accepted Islam before the days of Darul Arqam, making him either the 10th or 11th person to embrace Islam. Abu Salamah's ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر mother was Barrah Bint Abi Mutallib, the aunt of Rasulullah ﷺ, thus he was the first cousin of Rasulullah as well as his milk brother. Abu Salamah was extremely beloved to Rasulullah ﷺ Abu Salamah and Umme Salamah ﷲ

incidents that transpired in the court of Najashi were narrated by Umme Salamah ﺎﻬﻨﻋ ﷲ

ﻲﺿر. Umme Salamah ﺎﻬﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر forsook her luxurious home and sacrificed her comforts to travel to an unknown distant land for the sake of Allah Ta’aala She lived in a foreign land for many years, away from her birth place and family to preserve her Deen.

A great test

One of the greatest tests that Umme Salamah ﺎﻬﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر faced was at the time of Hijra to Madinah Munawarrah When Abu Salamah ﻪﻨﻋﷲﻲﺿر resolved to depart for Madinah, he made preparations and set out without any delay. Before they could leave Makkah they were spotted by men from the Banu Makhzoom tribe. These men came forward violently saying to Abu Salamah ﻦﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر, referring to Umme Salamah ﺎﻬﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر, "She is our daughter, why should we allow you to take her?" They forced Umme Salamah ﺎﻬﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر and her son away from her husband When Abu Salamah's

tribe, Banu Abdil Asad saw her clan seizing her, they flared up in pride and snatched her little son Salamah away, saying that Salamah belonged to them and they would not allow him to leave. In a few moments, Umme Salamah ﺎﻬﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر was separated from her husband and child Abu Salamah ﻪﻨﻋﷲﻲﺿر found himself in this helpless situation, set out for Madinah alone seeking to preserve his Deen. Umme Salamah ﻪﻨﻋﷲﻲﺿر would go out every morning to the valley and sit down in the very spot where her tragedy had ensued. She would recall her incident and weep unceasingly until nightfall This continued for almost a year until one day her first cousin passed by her and took pity on her condition. He rebuked his people and kept pleading on her behalf until they permitted her to join her husband. Their hearts softened towards her, and soon her son was also returned to her by Banu Abdil asad

Asad Without lingering in Makkah any longer, she set out to Madinah on a camel with her son. In the outskirts of Makkah, in Tan'eem she was seen by Uthmaan bin Talha ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر. Uthmaan ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر was a very noble man of Quraysh, but he was not yet a Muslim. Seeing this vulnerable mother and her young baby travelling alone, Uthmaan ﻪﻨﻋﷲﻲﺿر decided to help them on this journey. Umme Salamah ﺎﻬﻨﻋﷲﻲﺿر narrates, "By Allah, I have never met a more noble or honourable Arab. Whenever he reached a place, he would make the camel kneel down then he would walk away while I dismounted Then he would draw the camel and go to rest under a tree in the distance" When it was time to mount again, he would bring the camel near her, then move away some distance so that she could climb back on. On this journey, he never looked at her, nor spoke to her, he kept his gaze fixed ahead while Umme Salamah ﺎﻬﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر sat on the camel. Uthmaan bin Talha ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر maintained this modest and honourable way until they reached Madinah. He was so selfless that he carried out this strenuous journey on foot, without expecting any monetary recompense to help a woman who was not his relative for a cause that he did not believe However, he accepted Islam before the Conquest of Makkah along with Khaalid bin Waleed and Amr bin Aas ﻢﻬﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر. May Allah be pleased with them. Finally Umme Salamah and Abu Salamah ﷲ ﻲﺿر ﺎﻤﻬﻨﻋ were reunited. They lived together in madinah and had 3 more children.

Marriage to Rasūlullah ﷺ

During the battle of Badr and and Uhud, Abu Salamah ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر fought devotedly and bravely alongside Rasulullah ﷺ . In the battle of Uhud he was terribly wounded, for which he was receiving treatment. Outwardly it seemed to have healed but it deteriorated and soon it became inflamed and swollen One day Abu Salamah ﻲﺿر ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ came home with an extreme sense of joy, he said to Umme Salamah, "I heard Rasulullah ﷺ say, when someone is afflicted with any misfortune and recites, 'Indeed we belong to Allah and to Allah shall we return. Oh Allah, I seek the reward for this affliction with You. Oh Allah, grant me something better in return' Then

ﻪﻨﻋﷲﻲﺿر

Allah will certainly grant him that." During his convalescence, Abu Salamah ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر was bedridden and eventually he succumbed to his wound Rasulullah ﷺ was very moved on the death of Abu Salamah ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر, he made dua for his widow and his orphan children. When he passed away, Umme Salamah ﺎﻬﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر remembered what her husband told her and recited this dua, but thought to herself, 'who could be better than Abu Salamah?' Nevertheless she still acted upon it as it was from the teaching of Rasulullah ﷺ The Muslims were overwhelmed with the grief of Umme Salamah

, they named her Widow of the Arabs They understood their duty towards this weak mother and little children.

First Hadhrat Abu Bakr ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر proposed to her, but she declined him, and then Hadhrat Umar ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر proposed to her but she declined as well. Finally, Rasulullah ﷺ proposed to her. Nervously she replied, "I posses three faults I am a jealous women, I am advanced in age and I have children."

Rasulullah ﷺ replied, "Regarding the jealousy, I will make dua to Allah to remove it from your heart As for your age, I am in the same position, and your children will be my children." She then accepted his proposal and from then on she was not only Umme Salamah ﺎﻬﻨﻋ

, she became Ummul Mu'mineen

Her merits and virtues

Umme Salamah ﺎﻬﻨﻋﷲﻲﺿر had unparalleled elegance and beauty Aaisha ﺎﻬﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر mentioned that when Rasulullah married Umme Salamah ﺎﻬﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر, she became jealous over the extreme beauty of Umme Salamah

She had a special insight in matters and her eloquence made her outstanding. She had a sense of reason that made her persuasive in the her speech

During the treaty of Hudaibiyyah, the Sahabah were heavily disappointed over the treaty that outwardly went in favour of the disbelievers They were heartbroken that they were not permitted to perform Umrah at that time. Rasulullah ﷺ gave the order command jjjj

for them to slaughter the sacrificial animals and shave their hair in order to exit Ihraam Rasulullah ﷺ entered the tent of Umme Salamah and expressed his distress She advised him, "Oh Rasulullah ﷺ this treaty is dreadfully challenging to the Muslims This is why they are so dejected that they are unable to execute your instructions. Do not say anything to anyone You personally go outside, slaughter your animal, and shave off your hair. Inevitably the people are bound to follow suit" This is exactly what happened. When the Sahabah ﻢﻬﻨﻋﷲﻲﺿر saw Rasulullah ﷺ do this, they raced one another to carry out the command. May Allah reward Umme Salamah

for her suggestion

Verse thirty-five of Surah Ahzab was revealed as a result of a question that Umme Salamah posed to Rasulullah She asked Rasulullah ﻞﺻ ﻢﻠﺳ ﻪﻴﻠﻋ ﷲ why only the male gender was addressed in the Quran, and not the females. Her question was not a challenge, rather it manifested her zeal and intelligence. Consequently, Allah Ta'ala revealed the verse

Her Demise

Umme Salamah ﺎﻬﻨﻋﷲﻲﺿر was the last wife of Rasulullah ﷺ to pass away in the year 62 A.H. She was 84 years old at the time of her death and she is buried in Jannatul Baqee She was lowered into her grave by her two sons and Her janazah salaah was performed by Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah

May Allah Ta’aala be pleased with her, and may He unite us with her and all the Azwaaj Mutaharrat. Ámin.

DEAR Muslimah . .

Dear Muslimah,

The other day a beloved advised me regarding something, and I found a stain of ungratefulness nestled deep in a nook of my heart It was something I would never have picked up if I was not advised. It led me to think about how easy it is for us to nurture undesired qualities unknowingly, only to uncover them when something unseemly happens. It is for this reason that Muhaasabah -- taking account of oneself -- is so important A good habit to introduce into life is taking stock of your day before you fall into a slumber. Think about what you said, what you did, and how could you have done better If anything unbecoming of a Muslimah occurred during your day, make Taubah and retire to bed with a clean heart. Rasūlullah saw has said that

The one who repents from sin is like the one who has no sin.

My Dearest Muslimah, it is also very important to accept a well-wisher's advice. Sometimes, when somebody advises us, the Nafs cannot palate another person telling us what is right and what is wrong. Nafs and Shaytaan cultivate arrogance in the heart of a Mu'min and by accepting the advice of others, the plant of pride is being uprooted

Therefore, it is only incumbent upon us to leash the Nafs and accept the advice of those who are sincere Many times we are blinded to our own defects and only come to realize them once it is pointed out to us. We should tame the Nafs to such an extent that even if somebody has malicious intents by means of advising, we should still search within ourselves for that quality. Nothing happens overnight. An animal that needs taming is not subdued in one day. It is a lot of hand on work until it is tamed. Similarly, our Nafs has to be worked on daily to see a difference

May Allah Ta'aala bless you with a heart full of gratitude and love, and may He guide you to a path of contentment and happiness.

With love and best wishes,

Your sister in Islam
