REVIVING ISLAM

Schools are closed, the sun is out and it's time to relax! to be their god Even though Christmas is widely accepted to be a Christian holiday, the roots of Christmas stem back to pagan traditions. In ancient Rome a feast called Saturnalia was celebrated during the winter solstice, signifying the days becoming longer. This celebration took place on the twenty-fifth Part of Saturnalia's merry-making was to give gifts, light candles, sing and decorate homes. The famous evergreen Christmas tree was a symbol for the return of life and light as the days started becoming longer. Apples were hung celebrating life which now have become red balls Mistletoe originated from the Druids, who believed it was a very powerful healing item If people met in the forest they would meet under the mistletoe as a symbol of peace. This was such a strong symbol of paganism that English churches banned the use of it The Puritan Christians, who rose in the sixteenth century knew that the idea of Christmas was deeply rooted in paganism and had banned it for twenty years before it became
December and the approach of the new year all around the world signifies a holiday, be it a holiday from school, a few days off of work, or the Christmas festivities celebrated by many The month of December has become synonymous with Christmas. As the end of November approaches, businesses and homes begin to hang up decorations signifying the coming of Christmas. Everyone around is in a holiday spirit However, the celebratory mood of Christmas is not welcome in a Muslim's home Many a times, people are unsure as to why it is not permissible for a Muslim to celebrate Christmas. They are under the notion that it is harmless merrymaking. However, the day of Christmas for the Christians commemorate the birth of Easa مﻼﺴﻟا ﻪﻴﻠﻋ, whom they believe celebrated during the winter solstice, signifying
had banned it for twenty years before it became too popular to do anything about it. The festivities of the New Year also emanates from the pagans of ancient Rome For the Romans the day of New Year was a very important day However, their new year didn't begin in January, rather it started in March as they had dedicated that month to their god of war. It was Julius Caesar in 46 BC, with his Julian Calendar, who permanently established the holiday on January 1st The beginning of the year was dedicated to a very strange god of theirs: Janus According to their mythology, Janus was two-faced god of doors (in fact his name Janus comes from ianua, "door" in Latin), beginnings and passages: that is why the first month of the year, January, was named after him On New Year’s Day the Romans would go on a procession to the top of the Capitoline Hill, where the priests would sacrifice a white bull to ask protection from the gods for the new year Moreover, the high priest, the Pontifex Maximus, would offer to Janus a pie made of flour, cereals, cheese, eggs and olive oil, to invoke their "god’s benevolence". The people would then celebrate by feasting together and wearing something red, which was supposed to bring good luck, health and fertility Nowadays, New Year has taken a different form of festivities. Fireworks, alcohol, nudity, dancing and music has become the benchmark for celebrating New Year's Eve. People from around the world stay up till midnight counting down the approach of the new year Singing in unison, dancing and acting without a shred of modesty Many Muslims celebrate New Year's without understanding the severity of it and this is a very grave thing indeed. Being joyful and participating in religious celebrations of the disbelievers is in fact a celebration and an honouring of disbelief, which has a devastating impact upon the creed and faith of a Muslim
Rasulullah ﷺ said: Some people among my Ummah will consume alcohol whilst giving it another name Their gatherings will consist of music and dancing girls Allah will let the earth swallow them and some of them will be transformed into apes and swine [Ibn Majah]. He ﷺ also said: Whosoever adds to the numbers of a people, will be counted from among them (i.e. in the sight of Allah Ta'ala) and the one who is pleased with the wrong of a people will be a partner in their actions" Therefore, participating in such celebrations - whether actively or passively - is extremely detrimental to one ' s Imaan As believers, we should be loyal to Allah Ta'ala and safeguard our Imaan by entirely shunning all things that are associated with the kuffaar, their celebrations and customs. Hence, we should not even be spectators to their celebrations and fireworks, as this is also a form of passive participation The following are some of the ways in which people imitate the kuffaar in supporting the New Year kuffaar celebration:
Advertising a "New Year's" sale Giving "New Year's" gifts or cards to customers, staff, etc. Remaining awake till midnight on 31 December "to see in the new year. " Burning fireworks at midnight
As believers, we believe that true respect, honour and dignity can only be attained by following the pristine, pure teachings of Islam and the Mubaarak Sunnah of Rasulullah ﷺ If we seek honour and respect elsewhere, we will bring nothing but disgrace and humiliation to ourselves Hadhrat ‘Umar ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر emphasized: “We were the most disgraced of people. Allah Ta'ala then gave us honour through Islam. If we ever seek honour in something besides that through which Allah Ta'ala has honoured us (Islam), Allah Ta'ala will disgrace us ” May Allah Ta’aala guide us all, Ámín
A short account of the Sahaabah ﻢﻬﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر and pious personalities
Hadhrat Moulana Maseehullah Khan Sherwáni ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر, more fondly known as Hazratjee, was one of the greatest authorities of our time. His honourable lineage is linked directly to Nabi ﷺ He was famously known for his deep-rooted love for the Sunnah of Rasūlullah ﷺ, and he was an embodiment of his knowledge, piety and astonishing qualities. Hazratjee ﻪﻤﺣر ﷲ was the founder and the first principal of Madrasah Miftaahul Uloom in Jalalabad, India, where he produced many of our senior ‘Ulamaa today. From an early age, Hazratjee ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر was blessed with the qualities of hayaa, excellence of character, simplicity, dignity and tenderness He had an indescribable love for carrying out nafl acts of ‘ibaadah and making Adhkaar. His ultimate goal was the reformation of the Ummah. Hazratjee ﷲﻪﻤﺣر was such that any person who encountered him always felt comforted and at ease by his presence, they would be touched by his influence and guidance and always feel welcomed Hazratjee ﻪﻤﺣر ﷲ was blessed with perfection in all fields of ‘Ilm He was such an ‘Aalim that he practiced on whatever he had learnt, an ‘Aalim baa ‘Amal. He had a unique gift of explaining difficult concepts and topics with such ease and simplicity that even a layman would understand indepth principles of Tasawwuf with ease His words were such that whenever they left his lips it seemed as if pearls were scattering due to the delicate and gentle words he used Hazratjee ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر was naturally an extremely tolerant person, hardly ever angry and would not lose control over his emotions. Every pore in his body flowed with softness and leniency. Whoever was around him and in his company always felt comforted and reassured He always made people feel comforted and at home Another one of Hazratjee’s ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر praiseworthy qualities, which we should all strive to achieve is his level of extreme modesty. Hazratjee ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر never sat crossed legged, in fact even when he was alone, he would never stretch his legs out completely, always keeping them slightly bent Most of the time, he sat in tashahhud position When he was asked regarding this, he replied: “How can I ever stretch my legs out in front of Allah Ta’aala who is our Maalik and Khaaliq? I feel ashamed to stretch my legs out in front of Allah Ta’aala.”
Hazratjee ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر was extremely humble, such that humility flowed through every vein of his body. He always regarded himself to be lower than everyone and acted as if he was just a mere servant, always ready to assist those around him and be in their service whether young or old He always regarded people, even his students to be better than him Visitors were greeted with warmth and a smiling face; never did he express any greatness or authority Hazratjee always regarded himself to be in the presence of Allah Ta’aala due to his constant consciousness. If he saw any piece of paper on the floor, he would immediately pick it up and
place it in some respectful place. Often, he would say “We must respect paper because it is a means of us attaining knowledge.” Hazratjee’s ﷲﻪﻤﺣر adab would reach out to as far as the pens, papers, inkpots and desks in his possession as these were the means of attaining ‘Ilm A student once mentioned that Hazratjee ﷲﻪﻤﺣر would not even fling or throw dirt into the bin, he would place it inside the bin with utmost care saying: “This was a favour from Allah Ta’aala which we enjoyed for some time. Now that there is no use for it, do not just throw it away, place it in the bin with respect rather than just throwing it away ”
One of the sterling qualities of Hazratjee ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر was always having good opinions about others. Hazratjee ﷲﻪﻤﺣر would always make sure he never harboured ill feelings for others. He would always cover up for people’s bad actions, he would say “A story after all is a story For every story there are a thousand versions Even if one sees something with one’s own eyes, then as far as possible, interpret the action in a good manner because many times, our sight could be in error. As in the case of a train, it appears to be moving but in reality, it is stationary. The reality is, that it is the other train that is moving.” It became so well known to other people that Hazratjee ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر never entertained evil opinions about others From this we can take lesson and try to implement this quality of always entertaining good opnions about others.
The Auliyaa of Allah are such people whose lives we can look into and find guidance. They are those who should be imitated. They kept the Ummah from falling apart by crying to Allah Ta’aala day and night for protection and goodness. It is through their effort that Deen is still being spread today. May Allah Ta’aala reward Hazratjee Moulana Maseehullah Khan, fill his qabr with light and grant him Jannatul Firdous. May Allah Ta’aala allow us to acquire these praiseworthy qualities and accept us to be part of His Auliyaa Ameen
On one occasion, Abdur-Rahman Ibn Al Qasmi Al Utaqi Al Misri who was a student of Imam Malik ﻞﻟاﻪﻤﺣر narrated a story from his lifetime, he explains: “I would visit Imam Maalik ﷲﻪﻤﺣر every day just before Fajr as it was the most appropriate time to ask him questions regarding Fiqh. I would sit at the doorstep of Imaam Maalik ﷲﻪﻤﺣر for the entire night and sometimes sleep would overpower me to such an extent that he would leave his home and proceed to the Masjid as I remained asleep and unaware that he had passed by me. A slave girl would awaken me and say; “Your master has left, he is not negligent like yourself, while you remain asleep Imam Maalik performs Fajr salaah with the same wudhu he had made at the time of Ishaa.”
Ibn Al Qasim ﷲﻪﻤﺣر continues in his story “I spent seventeen years at the door of Imaam Maalik ﷲﻪﻤﺣر, and during this time I had not engaged in any business transactions. One day while I was in the company of Imam Maalik ﷲﻪﻤﺣر, the Hujjaaj of Egypt arrived and with them was a young boy. This young boy approached Imam Maalik ﷲﻪﻤﺣر and asked: “Is there anyone from your students by the name of Ibn Al Qasmi?” When Imam Maalik pointed to me the young boy came towards me and kissed me on my forehead, I questioned him about his doing and to my surprise, this young boy was my son.”
When Ibn Al Qasmi ﷲﻪﻤﺣر had left for his pursuit in knowledge, his wife was pregnant with the young boy.
The prominent Ulamâ of Islaam have endured such great sacrifices while pursuing knowledge, separation from one’s family is a great challenge. However, in the quest of attaining Deeni ‘Ilm, such a great challenge seemed insignificant to such great scholars due to their thirst and determination for seeking ilm.
In the era of supermodels and actresses, influencers and bloggers, one will come to find that young Muslimahs do not know the details and history of the Ummahaatul Mu'mineen. Rather, they are mesmerised and have memorised everything there is to know about their western “role models”. It might be that one or two famous stories of the Umahaatul Mu’mineen are known to them, yet, there is no interest to learn more about these dazzling damsels.
She emigrated with her husband to Madinah She became a widow when her husband Khunays ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر was afflicted with a wound in the battle of Uhud and thereafter passed away When Hafsah ﻲﺿر ﺎﻬﻨﻋ ﷲ was widowed, ‘Umar ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر went to ‘Uthmaan ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر and said: “If you wish, I will get Hafsah married to you.” ‘Uthmaan ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر replied: “I will think about the matter and inform you” When I met him later on, ‘Uthmaan ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر excused himself and said that he does not intend marrying her. ‘Umar ﻪﻨﻋﷲﻲﺿر says: “I then went to Abu Bakr ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر and said to him: ‘If you wish, I will get Hafsah married to you.’” Abu Bakr ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر remained silent and did not give any reply I was quite grieved by his response. A few days later, Rasūlullah ﷺ proposed to her I got Hafsah married to Rasūlullah ﷺ. Abu Bakr ﻪﻨﻋﷲﻲﺿر met me after that and said: ‘O ‘Umar! You are probably angry with me. The reason why I did not give you any reply was that I knew that Rasūlullah ﷺ was intending to propose to her. I therefore
intending to propose to her I therefore remained silent and did not feel it appropriate to reveal Rasūlullah’s ﷺ secret. Had Rasūlullah ﷺ not proposed to her, I would have certainly accepted your offer”
During the Khilaafah of Hadhrat Abu Bakr ﻲﺿر ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ the Quraan was compiled into one Mus-half The Mus-haf remained with him until he passed away. Thereafter, it was in the care of Hadhrat ‘Umar ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر during his Khilaafah After he passed away, it was entrusted to Hadhrat Hafsah ﺎﻬﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر. During the Khilaafah of Hadhrat ‘Uthmaan ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر he borrowed the the original compilation of the Quraan from Hafsah ﷲﻲﺿر ﺎﻬﻨﻋ and made copies of it along with arranging the Surahs in sequence. The transcribed copies were sent to each province, and the original copy was returned to Hafsah ﺎﻬﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر and remained with her until she passed away.
Her virtues and status
Hafsah ﺎﻬﻨﻋﷲﻲﺿر was a very pious person She was known for her fasting and abundant salaah. She has narrated sixty Ahaadith from Rasūlullah ﷺ
Haakim ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر narrates from Hadhrat Anas bin Maalik ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر: Rasūlullah gave Hafsah a single divorce Thereafter, Jibra’eel مﻼﺴﻟا ﻪﻴﻠﻋ came to him and said: Oh Muhammad ﷺ, you have divorced Hafsah whereas she is one who fasts often and performs salaah abundantly, and she will be your wife in Jannah Rasūlullah ﷺ then took her back. [AlAlbaani]
Hadhrat Hafsah ﺎﻬﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر away in Madinah in Sha'baan 45 A.H at the age of sixty. during the Khilaafah of Mu'aawiyah ﻪﻨﻋﷲﻲﺿر May Allah Ta'aala make us pious and studious like our mother Hafsah ﺎﻬﻨﻋﷲﻲﺿر and reunite us with all the Ummahaatul Mu'mineen in Jannah, Aameen.
Uthmaan I or Osman Ghazi grew up in Soğut during his fathers rulership of the area The area was inhabited by people of many religions and cultures. Many people stopped by for trade, and many settled there aswell due to the rich civilization and good conditions brought by the leadership of Ertuğrul Ghazi Despite there being many cultures within Soğut, it had been predominantly occupied by Turkish Muslims and Byzantine Christians. The justice of Ertuğrul in these lands had invited even the oppressed of nearbyvillagesandtownstomovetoSoğut Many lands were conquered during the life of Ertuğrul He was such an individual, that even the inhabitants of the lands he planned to conquer, wished that he became the ruler. During this time Osman had learned much from his father, along withthishehadstudiedIslamicliteratureindepth. He also underwent intensive training to become an Alp (a warrior). As the years progressed, his father further established the Beylik of Soğut, while still defending against Monğol threats He established ties with just neighboring rulers. A famous incidentinwhichheruledinfavourofanon-muslim is mentioned In this incident, a non-muslim and a muslim had a dispute, and Osman saw that the non-muslim was correct. He passed judgement in favour of the non-muslim. With both parties shocked at the judgement, they both proceeded to speak to him and ask why he chose a non-muslim despite he himself being a muslim. He responded saying "Allah commands us with justice, thus it is mydutytobejustbeforeIstandinfrontofAllahfor myjudgement”
One day, Sultan Mahmood called together the officials of his government with the aim of testing their intelligence. He took out a pearl from his treasury and firstly handed it to the Chief Minister and questioned him: “What is the value of this pearl? How much can it be sold for?” The Minister replied, “Sir, this pearl is of great value. It is more valuable than two hundred donkeys laden with gold.” The King then ordered: “I command you to crush this pearl.” The Minister replied: “I will not destroy this valuable pearl. I have the welfare of your treasury at heart and to crush this valuable gem would amount to disrespect on my part.” The King applauded this reply and rewarded him with a special robe of honour The King then took the pearl from the Minister and handed it to another of his court officials and asked him to determine what the value of the pearl was. He replied: “Sir, this precious pearl is more valuable than half of your kingdom May God protect this pearl” The King commanded him similarly; to crush the pearl. He replied: “Sir, my hands cannot move to destroy this valuable pearl. To destroy this pearl would amount to enmity towards your treasury.” The King praised him profusely for his reply and rewarded him as well. In this manner, one by one the King called sixty-five officials from his government and each one of them followed the example set by the Chief Minister The King praised each one
Chief Minister The king praised each one of them and rewarded them with a royal robe of honour. After testing all the other officials, the King now turned to Ayaaz, handed him the pearl and said: “Oh Ayaaz, every one of my officials have seen this pearl You also have a look at its radiant light and then tell me, what is its value?” Ayaaz replied, “Sir, whatever value I am going to mention, this pearl will be worth much more than that.” The King quickly ordered, “Quickly, crush this valuable gem into pieces”. Ayaaz knew the King’s temperament and immediately realized that the King was testing him He broke the pearl into small pieces and did not pay any attention towards receiving any royal robe as a reward As soon as he broke the broke the pearl into pieces, all the officials created a great commotion. The Minister of the Sultan said: “By Allah! This man is a disbeliever, an ungrateful one, showing no regard for a valuable gem belonging to you” Ayaaz replied, “Respected brothers! Which is more valuable, the command of the King or this pearl? Oh people, in your sight the pearl is more valuable than the command of the King. I could not dismiss it like a Mushrik and turn towards the pearl. To remove my sight from the King and turn towards the pearl is equivalent to shirk in the love and obedience towards the King.” Ayaaz said: “Respected Sirs, is the command of the King more valuable or the
the pearl? I shall not move my sight from the King and I will not turn my sight to the pearl like a Mushrik. Oh, you unworthy ones! The actual pearl was the King’s command. All of you broke the pearl of the King’s command” When Ayaaz explained this secret to all the Ministers who were jealous of Ayaaz’s nearness to the King, the became humiliated and disgraced by his understanding.
Jamaadul Ulaa, also known as Jamaadul Awwal is the fifth month in the Islamic calendar. The origin of the name Jamaadul Ulaa is derived from the word دﺎﻤﺟ meaning Arid, dry or cold; denoting the dry and parched land, hence the dry months as the pre Islamic Arabs would usually name months according to the weather conditions.
While there are no specific acts of 'Ibaadah to perform in this month, one should try to do the much encouraged Nawaafil acts of 'Ibaadah such as fasting on the Ayyaamul Ba'eedh (white/bright days) as well as Mondays and Thursdays. Also reading the Nawaafil Salahs which hold great reward, such as Salatudh Dhuhaa, Tahajjud and Ishraaq.
Dear Muslimah,
How easy it is to lose sight of who you should be? I have been pondering this struggle.
I fear how easy it is to become negligent To cling to Islam in its authenticity and refraining from succumbing to a watered down form is no easy task, not when the age has dawned in which doing so is akin to holding burning embers, and certainly not when we surround ourselves with those who make this path to Allah far more difficult than it should be, through their influence, judgement, prejudice or their coercion to give in. I worry about you. I worry about us.
Therefore, I write this to you and to myself, you whose fingers are loosening their hold tighten your grasp. I wish for you to stand up again. Remember who you are striving to be. Don't allow yourself to forget the essence of Islaam and the morals and values a muslimah should be endowed with Don't let go of them You must continue forth But not without ensuring your path is the correct one leading to your Lord. How easeful it becomes if you loosen your hold on those hindering your progress It matters not if they are ashamed of your hayaa, or if your effort to abide by the Sunnah bothers them The only judgement that matters, is that of your Lord, The Most High.
So mend your relationship with your Quraan, clutch it to your chest, for it is your greatest guide It is your shade from the dark clouds of this dunyaa, and for you who holds onto it with love and honour, it will surely be a companion within your lonely grave — and take note of the words of The Beloved of Allah! allow it to be your consolement and encouragement Think of your Nabi, smiling at you with happiness in the Aakhirah, pleased with you, for you were a believer in garb and in heart and this is true success.
Alhamdulillāh, it might be that you've come very far along your joruney. If that is so, I am happy for you. But never allow shaitaan to deceive you into the belief that you are have done enough; do not remain stagnant Soldier on, my sister, for your journey has not yet reached its end There is more for you to do, to learn or unlearn, to become. Don't settle for the bare minimum, when when you are able to tread a path to Allahs love instead.
Remember, there is no time like now. Though it is difficult, remember your goal. remember who your role models are, what your religion is, remind yourself of who your Rabb is, and take heed. Think not that you will begin again tomorrow, or only when you feel that spark of motivation, for you shall not traverse far with motivation, but with will power and reliance upon your Lord. So with purposefulness; equip yourself well, trust in Allah, allow the examples of the pious to give you courage, and through firmness and grace, persist
May Allah Ta'aala guide me and you. With love,
Was Aazar the father of Ibráhím مﻼﺴﻟا ﻪﻴﻠﻋ ?
Please explain in brief as to how does one calculate his Zakaat.
Calculate the amount of Zakaatable assets you own i.e. cash, gold, silver and stock in trade. Thereafter, deduct your liabilities from your Zakaatable assets and work out 2 5 percent of the remainder (i.e. if the remainder reaches the amount of nisaab or more). This will be the amount that you will have to give out in Zakaat If after deducting your debts you possess less than the nisaab or you do not possess any wealth, then Zakaat is not compulsory upon you Find out from your local Ulama what is the current Nisaab amount.
Upon who is Zakaat compulsory?
Zakaat is Fardh (compulsory) upon every sane adult Muslim (male and female) who possesses Zakatable assets (i.e. Zakatable assets over and above one ’ s basic needs, minus liabilities) to the value of Nisaab (minimum threshold) for one ’ s Zakatable (lunar) year.
Can I offer salaah while wearing glasses?
Yes, it is permissible provided your head and your nose are both placed firmly on the ground
Oil a few large sheet pans. Whisk together all ingredients well until there are no lumps. Add the mixture into a saucepan or broad frying pan. Switch the stove on low and stir. Lumps will form, continue to stir and they will disappear. The batter should not be allowed to stick to the bottom of the pan.
Cook until thick and glossy (it will look like a thick white sauce)
Place on prepared pans and smoothen out thinly. Let cool and cut into strips Sprinkle over fresh coconut and dhania. Roll. Make a wagaar with oil, mustard seeds, and slit green chillies and pour over rolled kamri. Garnish with dhania and enjoy!
Kamri is a Gujarati, Indian snack made from chickpea flour and yoghurt. It's slightly sour and spicy, making it the perfect afternoon snack.
