REVIVING ISLAM

BACK on on on TRACK TRACK

The holidays are over! Work is resuming, schools are opening, and everyone is slowly falling back into the routine of their lives. With the onset of the New Year, many people resolve to set their affairs straight. "This is the year I accomplish such and such," or "This year is my year, " Strict routines and plans are drawn out only to fall short a week later While New Year's or New Year's resolutions have no basis in Islaam, a lesson to be learned is how quick we are to fall short of our commitments. We are such that at the beginning of a venture, we start with full force, and towards the end, our fuel tank has run empty. The majority of the time, we fall through because we start too strong. Islaam is a moderate religion that encourages moderation in all aspects of life

encourages moderation in all aspects of life. When things are done at a moderate pace, they are easier to follow through and be consistent with. Nabi ﷺ has said:

This time of year, many of our Muslimahs will be returning to routine as well Sending kids off to school or returning to madrasah and school themselves. The 6 A.M. mornings, which were quiet and serene yesterday, are filled with hustle and bustle today. Socks are lost, books are not packed,

and everyone is hysterical This should not be the case Children's school and madrasah bags should be packed the night before Their uniform should be laid out and inspected for any creases. School lunch must be prepared and packed, or if it can not be made in advance, preparations for it should be made the night before. An extra 15 minutes of preparation the night before can help a great deal the next morning. Failure to plan is planning to fail. Tomorrow's work should be completed today, and today's work should have been done yesterday!

A short account of the Sahaabah ﻢﻬﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر and pious personalities

IMAAM AN-NAWAWI

In the holy month of Muharram, 631 years after the Hijrah of Rasūlullah ﷺ, Abu Zakariyyaa Yahyaa ibn Sharaf An-Nawawi ﷲﻪﻤﺣر was born to a modest family in the village of Nawa near Damascus, Syria. While very little is known about his family, it is said that his father was a pious man who, due to his piety, was able to nurture and encourage his son in a righteous direction. The remarkability of Imaam An-Nawawi ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر was apparent at a very young age. While other children would run around and play, Imaam An-Nawawi ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر would only observe. Once, an onlooker narrated an incident where the children would beg him to play with them until he was brought to tears due to their insistence. When asked why he refused to join them in play, he responded by saying, “We have not been created for this.” Another incident took place when he was seven years old. On the 27th night of Ramadhaan, he woke up at the time of Tahajjud and incessantly awoke his entire family. It was extremely dark inside the home when his father asked, “What is it?” Imaam An-Nawawi ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر responded, “Don’t you see the entire house is illuminated?” His father immediately realised that his seven -year-oldchild had seen the light of Laylatul Qadr. He completed his memorisation of the Qur’aan Kareem while in Nawa before he attained puberty. Due to his scholarship and after exhausting all the potential knowledge, he could gain in Nawa, he went to Damascus when he was eighteen, the Islamic centre of learning Deen at that time, to further his studies He studied Ahaadeeth, Fiqh, and other aspects of Deen from many great Islamic Scholars and began teaching at the age of twenty-four His pursuit of knowledge dominated his entire life He spent all his time learning, teaching, and writing various books He would only sleep when sleep would overtake him and even said about himself, “I spent two years without lying on the ground on my side [to sleep] ” He would not waste a moment of the day or night, but he would spend it attaining knowledge to the extent that he would, while walking in the streets, revise his notes or whatever he remembered from his lessons His desire for learning was so great that he never married out of fear that he would not be able to fulfill the rights of a wife Imaam An-Nawawi ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر had three characteristics that he excelled at Firstly, his level of scholarship was such that by the time he passed away,

JAMÂD-UL-UKHRÂ 1444 VOL 1 | ISSUE 6

thousands of pages were written by him The scholars took an approximation of how many pages he would have written in one day if he started writing at the age of eighteen until his death and the average was over forty pages per day Secondly, he was an ascetic He never wasted any time as he was always engaged in some form of Ibaadah when he was not teaching, writing, or studying and fasted most days He was so scrupulous that he would never eat from any public gardens lest he should trample on someone’s rights His father would send food for him from the village and that would be the only food Imaam An-Nawawi ﷲﻪﻤﺣر would consume Thirdly, he never shied away from enjoining good and forbidding evil Imaam An-Nawawi ﷲﻪﻤﺣر lived during a tumultuous time for the Muslim Ummah when the Mongols had invaded the Islamic States. Allah Ta’aala chose a group of slaves, who were appropriately named the Mamlooks, due to them being owned by others, to save the Muslim Ummah from the Mongols. The head of the Mamlooks, who also later became the Khaleefah, was a man named Zaahir Al-Baybaris. Despite humble beginnings and then having his status raised by Allah Ta’aala, his rule, the Mamlook Dynasty, became very oppressive and they taxed the people without necessity. Imaam An-Nawawi ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر was at the forefront of the opposition party and at the forefront in advising Zaahir Al-Baybaris. Imaam An-Nawawi ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر reminded him that Allah Ta’aala made him the leader of the Muslim Ummah after having nothing, and to avoid trampling upon the rights of those under his rule and fear the day that he will stand in front of Allah Ta’aala. Imaam An-Nawawi ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر opposed him to such an extent that others asked Zaahir Al-Baybaris why he never punished, imprisoned, or exiled Imaam An-Nawawi ﷲﻪﻤﺣر for his opposition against the leader. He replied that whenever he thought of Imaam An-Nawawi ﷲﻪﻤﺣر, he would find fear inside himself, such a fear that he was unable to retaliate against Imaam An-Nawawi ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر. Imaam An-Nawawi ﷲ ﻪﻤﺣر is most known for his commentary on Saheeh Muslim, his compilation Riyaadh us-Saaliheen, Bustaan al-Aarifeen, Arba’een an-Nawawi, and Kitaab ul-Athkaar.

He passed away at the very young age of only 45 years old in Nawa. All he owned at the time was a garment, a staff, and a turban. He expressed his dislike for having a marker on his grave, but with the permission of Allah Ta’aala, a tree grew from it. A tree symbolises life and growth, which is equally symbolic of his life and literary works which are still being used in the revival and spreading of Deen today. May Allah Ta’aala accept all the efforts of our illustrious Imaam, may He forgive all his shortcomings, grant him forgiveness, fill his grave with Noor, enter him into Jannatul Firdous without reckoning, grant him companionship with our beloved Nabi ﷺ, the Sahaabah ﻢﻬﻨﻋﷲﻲﺿر and all those who are righteous and grant us the same, Ámin.

Dogged DEVOTION DEVOTION

There was once a Moghul leader who converted to Christianity due to which a group of prominent Christian and Moghul leaders came to visit him. During the visit, one of the group began attacking the honour and speaking ill of Rasulullah ﷺ. He continued reviling Rasulullah ﷺ, until a hunting dog which was tied nearby suddenly leaped on him, and began to scratch and claw at him until several men were eventually able to restrain it and free the man. On seeing this, one of the group said to him, “The dog attacked you because you were speaking ill of Rasulullah ﷺ, ” “Never!” he exclaimed, “The dog is very noble. When I was gesturing with my hand, it thought I wanted to hit it. That is why it attacked me.” Saying this, he foolishly went on speaking ill of Rasulullah ﷺ. As he did so, the dog immediately leaped up and attacked him once again, this time tearing out his throat and killing him instantly. The devotion of this dog to the honour of Rasulullah ﷺ had such an effect on their hearts that on witnessing the scene, approximately forty thousand Moguls accepted Islam!

When Allah Ta‘ala loves a person, He instills the love of that person into the hearts of the entire creation. Similarly, when Allah Ta‘ala dislikes a person, He instills the dislike and hatred of that person into the hearts of the entire creation. Speaking against Rasulullah (S.A.W), or even the pious who follow in his footsteps, is an action that greatly angers Allah Ta‘ala. Thus, even the dog was unable to suppress its rage, and hence attacked the person reviling Rasulullah ﷺ

POOR POOR POOR

Zaynab Bint Khuzaymah

In the era of supermodels and actresses, influencers and bloggers, one will come to find that young Muslimahs do not know the details and history of the Ummahaatul Mu'mineen. Rather, they are mesmerised and have memorised everything there is to know about their western “role models”. It might be that one or two famous stories of the Umahaatul Mu’mineen are known to them, yet, there is no interest to learn more about these dazzling damsels.

Her lineage and early life

Zaynab Bint Khuzaymah was born in Makkah Mukarramah, her father's name was Khuzaymah Ibn Al-Harith Hilali She was the sister of Ummul Fadhl and Hadhrat Maymoonah Bint Al-Harith, from the same mother and different fathers. She embraced Islam early and came from a fine and noble origin. She had pure religion and was very pious, the fragrance of her piety spread with her name and whenever it was mentioned. The pleasant fruits of her piety flew abundantly from her hands to the poor).

poor and needy in the form of generous gifts and sadaqah, this is why she was known as Ummul Masākīn (The mother of the poor)

Her first marriage was to Abdullah Ibn Jahsh ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر who was the cousin of Rasūlullah ﷺ, as his mother was Umamah Bint Abdul Muttalib. He was martyred in the year 3 A.H. in the battle of Uhud. On the expiry of her 'Iddah, Rasūlullah ﷺ proposed to her and the Mahr was set at 500 dirhams Since Rasūlullah ﷺ had lost so many loved ones in his early life, he knew the pain and grieve of separation that Zaynab ﺎﻬﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر was suffering. He made efforts to console her and proposed marriage to her, she welcomed the proposal and accepted it; thus she entered the household of Rasūlullah ﷺ as a mother of the believers. This was after his marriage to Hafsah Bint Umar

Marriage to Rasulullah ﷺ

Her virtues and status

Her life with Abdullah Ibn Jahsh ﷲ ﻲﺿر ﻪﻨﻋ was a clear example of love, obedience, and self-sacrifice. The position of her husband, Abdullah ﻪﻨﻋ ﷲ ﻲﺿر had increased and elevated her status This had only made her more humble and sincere in her love for Allah and His Beloved Messenger ﷺ. She was never carried away by any sort of pride nor any ostentation when Rasūlullah ﷺ appointed her husband as the leader of the first military contingent She never showed any form of arrogance when married. Humility was a prominent and beautiful quality of her personality.

Her demise

She passed away a few months after marrying Rasūlullah ﷺ, she was the only wife other than Khadijah ﻪﻨﻋﷲﻲﺿر to pass away during the lifetime of Rasūlullah ﷺ She passed away at the age of 30 and is buried in Jannatul Baqī. Rasūlullah ﷺ had personally performed her Janāzah Salah.

May Allah Ta’aala be pleased with our mother Zaynab bint Khuzaymah ﷲﻲﺿر ﺎﻬﻨﻋ and may Allah Ta’aala instill in us her qualities of humility and generosity, Ámîn

Who is described as a miser in the Shariah? A miser according to Shariah is a person who does not fulfill the Faradh and Waajib expenses of the Shariah. One who does fulfill these obligations cannot be termed a miser. However, it is incorrect to believe that besides the compulsory forms of expenditure, there is no need for one to spend voluntarily in assistance to fellow humans. Apart from zakaat and other wajib sadaqah, the Shariah also established a category of spending based on mutual respect and humane feelings towards others. This is the moral and humanitarian aspect of spending. Within financial restraints, one should act on the dictates of morals and mutual sympathy and spend accordingly. This is something to ponder over.

FROM THE DISCOURSES OF MOULANA MUHAMMAD FAROOQ

"He who believes in Allah and the Last Day must either speak good or remain silent."

One should speak in a soft, kind and beautiful manner, do not unnecessarily raise your voice and express harm in a harsh full way. N.B. Females should not speak in this manner to non mahrams! Speak in a plain way when the need arises. 2. Do not backbite and slander others. If one has nothing good to say about a person, it is better to just remain silent. 3 Take consideration of other people's feeling and know that you will be held accountable and answerable for hurting someone. 4. Do not hurt or harm others in any way, shape or form. 5 It is not appropriate for a Muslim to swear and use ill, rude and inappropriate language. 6. Do not lie, even if one is joking. Unnecessary and excessive speech causes the heart to harden 7. Do not pride yourself and boast about your wealth, looks, or achievements etc. 8 Always be happy for others and not show any form of jealousy or envy 9. Always praise, glorify and thank Allah ﷻ whenever the opportunity arises. 10. Show politeness, respect and honor to the person you are speaking to, especially your elders and parents.

DEAR Muslimah

Today, I stumbled across a treasure. Deep within my bookshelf, a kitaab based upon the simple sunan acts of life It was a simple, humble read though the realisation which struck was anything but. I wish to share these thoughts with you. As the world progresses, the image painted is that we are allowed to live our lives however we desire; as long as it brings us some fleeting happiness. The result of living a life which encourages acting upon our impulses, is that we are spun into a web of darkness, misery and emptiness. In disarray, we look for answers but find nothing less than more confusion What then are we to do? Of course, Alhamdulillāh, as Muslimeen, deep down we doubtlessly know the answer. Islam is what will bring us this. Your peace is of course, by Allah But we wonder, how do we reach Allāh? There lived a kind soul who thought of your wellbeing. His eyes shed tears, hoping you'd open your heart and take heed, praying you'd tread the path of salvation before your time on this earth expires. And thus, he left behind his traces for you, as clear as day. He left behind footsteps, all we need to do is insert our every step into his, and follow the same way a most blessed way; the Sunnah of Rasūlullāh ﷺ You might wonder, 'I do try yet I'm unable to treat people the way he ﷺ did, or have the patience he had, or I am unable to fulfill the laws of Allah.' The answer you are looking for, my dear sister, is thus: What about the simple daily sunan? What of the manner in which Rasūlullāh ﷺ walked, spoke, ate his meals, drank, entered or left his home, greeted, hugged and so much more? Each of these are indeed stepping stones which lead us to Allāh, to a purer, better way of living. It is doubtlessly the perfect lifestyle which brings us that contentment, sense of fulfilment and Inshā Allāh, everlasting bliss in the Aakhirah. The daily sunan are the stepping stones which, when practiced, set the way forth Only then will the greater sunan become easier for us to practice Bi-idhnillāh In brief, within the simplest sunnah, lies magnanimous rewards and innumerable benefits for us. In this life, and the next and yes even in walking or eating the way the beloved of Allah did. For what quicker way would bring us to Allah other than following the Sunnah of His Beloved? Our answers lie in this. There is no time like the present. I urge you to try. Let us try to emulate the most perfect way of life and, Inshā Allāh, Allāh will grant us the barakaat of it. He will enrich your soul for choosing to walk the path which He deemed most suitable for you and I And who knows better than He? Who cares more than He? Allahu Akbar!

I leave you with these thoughts upon which we both may ponder.

With love,

YourSisterinIslam

It is permissible to hire out hearses to non-Muslims to transport their deceased to their place of burial However, if a Muslim hires out the hearse to move a non-Muslim corpse from one town to another town then it will not be permissible to take a fee, hence one may only hire out the hearse (for a fee) to move the deceased to the place of burial.
