eason-wise, we are in fact in the fall. Meteorologically, though, summer in Egypt is still alive and kicking with its sizzling heat and suffocating humidity. The thing is; we kind of expect (hope) summer ends the minute we return from our beach getaways and resume our normal routines in the city, but the inescapable reality is the relentless season seems to drag on forever. We all dream of chillier nights, warm spicy drinks and colorful autumn leaves scattered everywhere. Our fall issue prepares our readers for the much sought after season, with fashion and beauty trends, reading and activity lists as well as workout routines befitting the fall and all the wonderful opportunities it has to offer. Directed by Disney legend and Oscar winner Glen Keane (“Dear Basketball”), the eye-popping animated musical reworks the ancient Chinese Moon Goddess fable as an “Oz”-like fantasy. A 38-year veteran of Walt Disney Feature Animation, Glen Keane trained under Walt Disney’s Nine Old Men. Keane went on to create many beloved Disney characters such as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Beast, Tarzan, and Rapunzel. In 2012, Keane departed Disney to begin Glen Keane Productions as a way to further his artistic explorations in animation, design, and film. He has since gone on to collaborate with Google, the Paris Ballet, and Kobe Bryant. His most recent project is the Academy Award-winning animated film Dear Basketball, which he animated and directed in collaboration with legends Kobe Bryant and John Williams. He is currently directing OVER THE MOON, an animated feature, a co-production with Pearl Studio and Netflix, due to be released in 2020.

The mystery/ thriller was written by the late author Ahmed Khaled Tawfik and we’re going to see it on screen through the eyes of its creator and director Amr Salama. We had the pleasure of talking to him as well as director Majid Al-Ansari, producer Mohamed Hefzy and the amazing cast Ahmed Amin, Razane Jammal, and Ayah Samaha about this highly anticipated project! 1. How was the idea of bringing a huge series like “Paranormal” to life on screen initiated? What did you have in mind during the casting of the show?

Amr Salama: Back when I was only 9 years old, the very first non school-related book that I’ve read was “Paranormal”. As I grew up I started to have the dream of becoming a director and bringing this specific project to life. I’ve always been a huge Ahmed Khaled Tawfik fan that I later began to stalk his social media accounts everywhere in order to officially meet him. He was like a godfather to me, as he is to a whole generation. Years later, in 2006, producer Mohamed Hefzy and I finally acquired the series’ copyrights and have tried to work on it numerous times until we finally pitched it to Netflix in 2018, and now here we are!
3. You’re definitely aware that the mystery/thriller genre is not very common in the entertainment scene in Egypt and the Arab world, especially when it comes to series. How do you think our audience will react to this different genre?
In terms of the casting, I always stop at questions like “Why Ahmed Amin as Refaat Ismail?” and I’m always like “Well, who else?”Simply because when I was still imagining the show and how everything was going to be like, I only pictured Amin in the role and could no longer see anyone else because for me, he is 100% Refaat Ismail. Same for the rest of the cast, they’re all very talented, smart, and have done nothing but make things easier for Majid and I as we worked together on the characters. To the point that every time I saw any of them on set with their character’s makeup and costumes, I would get super excited as if a child has just seen the actual character from their favorite book in real life. 2. “Paranormal” is such a different genre for both the entertainment scene in Egypt and yourself as an actor. This time around, people will be seeing you in a different light, how did you prepare for the character of Dr. Refaat Ismail and what initially drew you in to the role? Ahmed Amin: From the very beginning of my career I’ve worked in theatre so it hasn’t always been comedy roles for me. But it’s true that my kickoff in the entertainment scene was as a comedy actor so I would understand why the audience will be seeing me in such a different light. As for this role, director Amr Salama and I have been working closely together in order to figure out how I could accurately portray Dr. Refaat Ismail on screen. It took both of us countless hours of rehearsals, effort, and hard work. It’s also important to note that this character has always had a very special place in my heart because I was actually a fan of the Paranormal series itself as well as the late Ahmed Khaled Tawfik on both the personal and the professional levels. And I cannot, in any 28 October 2020
Razane Jammal: Yes that’s definitely true. However, as actors, it’s very progressive. We usually receive the information little by little. So when we first received our scripts and the idea of the show itself, instead of focusing on the genre, we focused on our own roles and did our research accordingly. As for the audience reaction, I feel that they’re going to focus more on our performances and the atmosphere of the show rather than the uniqueness of the genre itself and how new it is. And I personally think and hope that they’re going to really love it. 4. Filming and wrapping up during the Coronavirus pandemic surely wasn’t easy, how did you guys handle these challenging times? Mohamed Hefzy: There’s no doubt that it’s been very difficult, especially since “Paranormal” is already a huge project and a rather challenging and very ambitious one in itself. But thankfully, we were able to make it and push through all the rough times together as a team. Ayah Samaha: The necessary precautions were very well taken care of so the location was very safe. Everything was very well scheduled, on point, and extremely organized. Every crew member was very aware of their roles and tasks on set. There was no pressure at all to finish shooting or get something done because there was a time set for everything and everybody was very committed. 5. What do you personally love about your characters and how was it like playing a role that’s completely different from anything you’ve ever done before in your career? Razane Jammal: What I love about Maggie, my character, is how smart she is. She has a thirst for knowledge, she loves adventures; she’s also completely honest and not afraid to voice what she thinks. Most importantly, while shooting, we focused on the human side of our characters and were really passionate about bringing Refaat and Maggie’s relationship to life. For me, walking in her shoes was very fun, especially that we share a lot of qualities.

Ayah Samaha: I love that the show is set in a different era. Back then, things were very different for women and for people, in general. And bringing this kind of calm and different atmosphere to life right now was a challenge. As for my character, Howaida, despite the difficult times and the fact that she comes from a conservative family and had a complicated relationship, I like that she is a very strong woman and the love triangle in the show really portrays that. 6. You’ve already expressed your love for Dr. Refaat; did you read all the books preparing for the role? What did you find really challenging about his personality - considering that he’s very complex and multidimensional? Ahmed Amin: I actually read the series more than once growing up. And when I was the editor in chief of a children’s magazine, I was lucky enough to befriend Ahmed Khaled Tawfik during my time there because he was working at the same place. I got to learn a whole other side of Refaat Ismail due to the great similarities between both of them. But I would say that the one challenge and the side that was harder to portray on screen was how as a person, Dr. Refaat Ismail never showed what goes really on inside his mind. 7. How was the experience of working with Amr Salama like on such a very significant project? Razane Jammal: Amr is a visionary; he’s very talented and it’s been a pleasure working with him. He’s also not the kind of director who imposes his view; it’s a collaborative work for him. So he trusted us and gave us a voice. And it was honestly the same with Majid, despite how different their work styles are. Ayah Samaha: As an actress, I’ve always wanted to work with Amr Salama. And as soon as I landed the opportunity, I clinged to it and it was a dream. Everything I had already heard about him turned out to be true and he really is that director who would give a lot of space for creativity to his actors. I was truly comfortable and at ease while working with both him and Majid. It’s been an honour. 8. We’ve been hearing so much about how the visual effects and graphics in this series’ postproduction are going to be out of this world 32 October 2020
and we’re so excited! Can you talk to us about the execution? Amr Salama: All I can say is that we’re very proud of the outcome and we’re very grateful that Netflix helped us in the execution and post-production process with their expertise. Not to mention that all of what you’re going to see on screen has been proudly done in Egypt, which is very new and of course was under Netflix’s supervision. Majid Al-Ansari: It was quite the challenge but we’re very proud. It’s slowly getting there and we’re thankful for the team behind the execution and even though we can’t really talk much about this part right now, I’m pretty sure that people will enjoy it! 9. Did you expect the huge reactions post the announcement of the series? What are you hoping that the fans take out of “Paranormal” once it’s released? Amr Salama: Well, I’ve been getting threats on my social media for quite a while now from the fans of the series as soon as they heard about the adaptation. So I’m honestly terrified but really excited and definitely hoping they love it! Mohamed Hefzy: Even though Amr mentally prepared me for the hype that was going to follow the announcement due to the popularity of the book series, I still didn’t expect the amazing reaction and it only gave me the push I needed to work harder and really give the fans and the audience what they deserve! Ahmed Amin: Above everything, I’m personally hoping that it satisfies the fans and readers of this book series and I would love to see it surpass the success of the books - considering that Netflix is an international platform and the chances of “Paranormal” making it all over the world are not at all unrealistic so we’re very excited! Razane Jammal: I can promise you that the fans will fall in love with Refaat. And for me, I’m very excited and looking forward to the release because I believe that Netflix brings people and different cultures together and it’s great for the Egyptian audience to be represented on such a global platform. TIPS TO RE-IGNITE THE FIRE IN A LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIP by Marwa Rakha Are long-term relationships synonymous with boring or dead relationships? The way people use “long-term relationship” in a conversation implies that they are tired, consumed, deserve a break, or even justify a fling or a full-fledged affair. I googled: “how long is a long-term relationship?” I wanted to know what people consider “long-term”. I was shocked! The first answer was above two years! Two! Yes! Two! I scrolled down a few more responses 38 October 2020
and found “ten years”. Is that how people nowadays define long-term relationships? Is that the average longevity of a marriage, for example? Can we say that people expect a marriage to last anything between 2 and 10 years – but that is it? What about those couples who last 15, 20, 30, and 40 years together? How do they do it? What about those who aspire to fulfill the “Until Death Do Us Apart” promise – how does it work?
For starters, I am no expert on long-term relationships in the traditional sense; thus, my rant below is a mixture of observations, logical thinking, wishful thinking, and readings. Let us first agree that whether we are discussing long-term or short-term relationships, no relationship would last without the continuous work and effort of both partners. No one can ignite, or re-ignite, fire in a relationship single-handedly. The forces that are working for you, as someone who has been in – and survived – a long-term relationship, are: many happy moments, losses, traumas, fights, make-overs, decisions to be taken, and tests and trials. There are the benefits of the aging signs on both your faces and bodies, truly knowing one another, common friends, mutual interests, and a solid motivation to stay together no matter what. The forces that are working against you are: knowing too much about one another, the loss of the “spark” and connection, too many frustrations and grudges, boredom, living in separate worlds – figuratively or literally – and giving in to the status quo. Many people escape the pains of a long-term relationship by indulging; there are those who indulge in business, partying, gaming, friends and gangs, or flings and exploring new territory. Avoidance and denial are good strategies when dealing with certain conflicts, but in a marriage, these are the worst strategies. I am about to write down a few ideas to save the long-term ship from floundering but be warned: it takes two to tango! It takes two to re-ignite the fire! None of this advice will work if you try it without the full involvement and commitment of your partner. Write down and exchange 1. A list of the times that you would not have made it through without the love and support of your partner. 2. A list of the funny situations that you shared. 3. A list of the embarrassing situations that you can laugh about today. 4. A list of the surprises he/she made for you. 5. A list of the times you got lost on the road and laugh about them.
6. A list of the things you still want to do together. 7. A list of the things that make your partner special. 8. A list of the places you went to together and had a great time. 9. New vows and choose the perfect moment to exchange them. 10. The things that you plan on changing about yourself because you know that they annoy your partner. 11. The things you will continue doing, even if they are exhausting, because they make your partner happy. 12. The reason you decided to get married and make sure it is still there. 13. An adventure that you would like to try exploring with your partner. 14. A list of the things, good things, you wish upon your partner. 15. A letter of appreciation and gratitude addressed to yourself. If you and your partner decide to work on refreshing your long-term relationship, make two copies of my tips and take your time working on them. Please do take your time! You do not need to exchange your lists all on the same day; you can go as slow as one list per week. Please do not email the lists and do not send them by text messages or voice notes. Choose a day that is quiet and slow. Choose a place that is private and comfortable. Put some effort in the setting: candles, dinner, music, or just your comfy sofa in the living room. Approach one another positively and remember to smile. Imagine that one day you will share your lists, letters, and vows with your children and grandchildren. Your journey together is admirable and rare nowadays. Be proud of your achievement, of yourself, and of your partner. October 2020 39

Cut the artichokes into thin wedges, then boil for few minutes until cooked. Strain and rub with lemon and set aside. 2. In a bowl of boiling water, add the frozen peas for 3 mins until soft, then strain and set aside. 3. Boil the orzo pasta in salted water as per pack instructions, then strain and set aside. 4. Sauté the mushroom slices in a bit of olive oil or grill them then slice. 5. In a large salad bowl, mix all ingredients together then drizzle the dressing. Enjoy with grilled meat or fish – Tuck in!
Red Thai Prawns Curry with Squash & Kale Serves 2
A fiery and delicious super bowl packed with autumn’s goodness. I chose to have it here with quinoa, but you can serve it with white/brown rice or noodles. Also, you can go for a vegan version, or have it with chicken, beef or prawns - a very versatile sort of dish! SHOPPING BASKET: 3 tbsp Red Thai Curry paste - 2 tbsp veg. oil - 1 can coconut milk - 500g prawns - 200g mushrooms - 1 large courgette - a medium wedge of butternut squash - 3 handfuls of kale - 1 small onion, chopped – 1 handful coriander - 1 chunk of fresh ginger - 1 tsp garlic, minced - Soya sauce or Thai fish sauce - salt & pepper. STEPS: 1. Peel the prawns and devein, keep the heads and shells aside. 2. Using a vegetable peeler, turn the courgette and squash into flat noodles (zoodles). 3. Cut mushrooms into quarters. 4. In a deep casserole, heat the oil and add the curry paste, stir for 30 secs then add chopped onions & garlic. 5. Sauté onions until translucent, then add the prawns’ heads and shells. Cover with water and simmer for 10 mins. 6. Remove shells and heads, then stir in coconut milk and simmer for 2 mins. 7. Add in the mushrooms, kale, and thin ginger sticks. Simmer for another 5 mins. Add 2 dashes of Soya sauce or Thai fish sauce. 8. Lower the heat and stir in the peeled prawns. 9. When prawns turn pink, stir in the vegetable zoodles and a handful of fresh coriander leaves. Turn off the heat. Serve with cooked quinoa.

I just couldn’t pass on the king of autumn ingredients - Pumpkin. I shared a lot of pumpkin recipes before in soups and salads. This time I wanted to see it in a refreshing yet soothing dessert. Weather can still be warm around this time of the year, and a Nigella Lawson inspired pumpkin cheesecake is just perfect and thrilling! SHOPPING BASKET: ½ pack of Digestive biscuit – ½ cup melted butter – ½ tsp cinnamon powder – 500g pumpkin puree (readymade or roasted in the oven then pureed) – 2 large packs (300g) cream cheese – 1 cup sugar – 4 eggs – 1 cup heavy cream, whipped – juice of ½ a lemon. STEPS: 1. Start with the base, blitz the Digestive biscuits together with the cinnamon in the food processor until sandy texture. Mix with melted butter, then spread evenly into the bottom of a springform tin pan. Leave in the fridge or freezer until you make the filling. 2. In a blender, mix the rest of the ingredients altogether until smooth consistency. 3. Wrap the outside of baking dish with cling film several times, then with strong foil as a last layer to seal the edges and bottom. 4. Pour the filling in the springform tin over the chilled biscuit base, then place in a deep roasting pan filled halfway with water – creating a ‘Bain Marie’. 5. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 for almost 2 hours maybe less until filling is set with only a small wobble. Take the springform out of the ‘Bain Marie’, remove the foil and leave to cool down before leaving it in the fridge overnight. 6. Serve the next day, you can decorate with cream florets or nothing at all - the colour is just glorious on its own! October 2020 49
