Norwich Beer Festival 2023 High Attendance And Plans Announced For 2024

The 45th Norwich Beer Festival, run by Norwich & District CAMRA, has seen a high attendance and also raised over £10k for charity! With numbers attending running well over the previous year, the 2023 beer festival has been a huge success! The Festival’s charity, Brave Futures, which supports children who have experienced sexual abuse, managed to raise £11,900 from the huge generosity of attendees! This achievement was also helped by the kind donation from the World Beer Awards, which donated beer to the World Beer Bar, raising over £4,000 in beer sales all of which was donated to the charity. In addition, T Shirts were donated and sold to attendees by the volunteers of the merchandise and charity

stands. Festival goers also raised over £900 on behalf of Royal British Legion poppy appeal. Starting the week with the judging of the regional rounds of the Champion Beer of Britain, the festival featured hundreds of UK and World beers and UK ciders and this year even offered some spooky green ales and beer slushies for the more adventurous. With hot food, beer safaris hosted by beer sommelier Cheryl Cade, music from The Hot Crumbs, The Macarnos, The Dirigibles, Robin Evans, Felix Simpson and The Collective, visitors to The Halls in October were offered a fun and unique experience! Craig Harmer, Festival Organiser adds, ‘None of this can be done without our wonderful volunteering team, who have a wealth of knowledge and expertise. Thank you also to the volunteers of the charity, Brave Futures.

We’re delighted to hear of the kindness of the attendees which shows what a wonderful experience the festival really is.’ Craig adds, ‘We would also like to thank our fantastic sponsors, First Bus, Woodforde’s Brewery, Barsham Brewery, Lacons Brewery, World Beer Awards, The Belgian Monk and Crisp Malt, without whom the festival couldn’t go ahead.’ Attentions now focussed on plans for 2024 and beyond. Due to critical repairs which have been scheduled to take place in 2024 at The Halls it is looking extremely unlikely to take place in its current form. Whilst other venues are being considered, the likelihood is that there will be a pubs festival, which will feature local breweries, and be an opportunity for regular festival goers and volunteers to come together and enjoy the real ale pubs of Norwich and beyond. Dates and details will be announced in 2024. Norwich CAMRA also run a series of coach trips, which are open to both CAMRA members and non-members to enjoy the local pubs outside the City and these will run throughout the pubs festival, with public transport guidance provided too.

CAMRA currently has a national membership of over 150,000 and was founded by four beer lovers in 1971. It is one of the most successful consumer organisations in Europe, with a mission to secure the future of real ale, cider and perry and to promote and protect pubs, clubs and breweries. CAMRA also produce The Good Beer Guide, featuring over 3400 favourite national venues, with the 2024 Edition now out through the national CAMRA site. Issue 128 2023

Posture A few weeks ago I bought a posture corrector. ‘Heck. What’s one of those?’ I hear you ask.

and my boobs are thrust so far out I can’t see my feet. Add to that the numerous straps digging into my back and neck, like string around sausages, and I frankly look ridiculous. I am also already aching from being in this strange new position.

Well, writing for long periods of time takes its toll on my shoulders and Above: Keri Beevis although I try hard not to let them slope, it’s not always easy. I had seen posture correctors advertised and they supposedly help pull your shoulders into the correct position, so I thought, okay, I’ll give it a go.

Still, I refuse to let any of this dampen my enthusiasm. No pain, no gain, right?

Now, I could have gone for a professional looking one, but what’s the fun in that? No, let me order a cheap knock off version from China. It will be just as good, right?

I manage to last 20 minutes before I am desperate to get the posture corrector off, but as my fingers search for the Velcro release strap at the back of the thing, I realise to my horror I can’t reach it.

My package arrives and I open it excitedly, brushing aside the sliver of scepticism when I see what looks like a cross between a dog harness and something you might wear if you’re about to throw yourself out of a plane - just minus the parachute.

It will be okay, I tell myself as sweat beads on my forehead, panic creeping in as I realise I might need to go find a neighbour to help me. First I try to shrug it off my shoulders. Cue, five minutes of me jumping around in my office like I have a wasp in my knickers.

It’s all good I tell myself, fiddling with numerous Velcro straps as I try to follow the Chinese instructions. After today I will no longer suffer with aching shoulders. It takes a few attempts, but eventually I manage to get the harness on and I take a look in the mirror to make sure it’s positioned correctly. Now, our friends in China have confidently assured me I can wear this out of the house, under a top or a cardigan, and no-one will ever know. They might look at me and think, ‘Wow, look at her brilliantly positioned shoulders’, but they will be totally unaware of the scaffolding forcing them in place.

Gamely I head to my desk and after a bit of manoeuvring I manage to start writing, ignoring the fact that what started as back ache has spread into my neck and shoulders, and is now making my head throb.

I am pleased to report I finally managed to free myself and the offending item has now been chucked into my cupboard of rubbish things I should never have bought. Mind you, Christmas is coming up. Watch out if you are on my Santa list.

China, you big fibbers. My shoulders are pulled so far back, I’m not sure I can raise my arms, to type,

DO YOU EVER...

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 128 2023

Do You Ever Experience Brain Fog? Have you ever been so overwhelmed that you’ve experienced an inability to think clearly, perhaps due to overwork, stress, anxiety or feeling overtired? It often results in confused ideas, inertia, a huge loss of efficiency, perhaps evidenced by indecisiveness, poor concentration, randomly jumping from one thing to the next or approaching tasks in an unproductive, aimless way. This sometimes occurs as a consequence of being asked to do too many things at once, of not feeling sufficiently trained or competent, or because of feeling resentful and undervalued. It can even be attributed to a health-related issue or as a side effect of certain medications. Grief can also cause brain fog and overwhelm. We may have experienced the loss of someone close, even though we knew that their time was limited. The intensity of experiencing several emotions, like grief, despair, disbelief, anger, frustration all at the same time can simmer, causing a state of paralysis as the loss is processed and reconciled.

Many endings can have a similar impact: a divorce, redundancy, health crisis or retirement can generate a myriad of intense emotions, all converging in an overwhelming mix. Frustration, anger, confusion about what’s happened, loss of identity and purpose, questioning as to what to do next can all occur, causing brain fog and a lack of clear thinking, often resulting in an exhausted inability to know where to start or how to move forward. Brain fog and overwhelm are familiar states during those early days of a major life change, like divorce, when there’s often so much to come to terms with, so many decisions to make! Being faced with a multitude of choices and decisions can make it hard to decide what we want for lunch or whether we want a drink of tea or coffee. Something simple can become one decision too many! At these times some things will require urgent attention, but several won’t. A good strategy can be to park less urgent matters for a while, until you feel stronger. Write a list and then do one item at a time. Small steps will get you to where you need to go and enable you to feel that you’re moving, albeit slowly.

DO YOU EVER...

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Oftentimes it can be good to take a break and not rush into making too many hasty decisions. Accept offers of help in order to give yourself a little breathing space. Good self-care is important too, being mindful not to rely on quick fixes, like alcohol, binge eating, drugs or shopping to provide comfort and relief. Try to take regular breaks, using that time to go to the gym, take a walk or even enjoy a duvet day when you do nothing much. Relevant and positive self-care can help with brain fog and be an effective way to improve focus and mental clarity. Managing stress is important as that helps enhance logical thinking and introduces a better perspective on all that’s happening. We may not be able to change the outcome, but by adopting and applying a more practical, pragmatic approach we can start to assess our options and determine the best way forward, what next steps might be the most helpful at such a time. Support yourself during testing times by committing to get enough quality sleep, maintain a good healthy diet, drink plenty of water and have regular fresh air and exercise. Adopting this approach can make a significant difference, partly because of the introduction of positive, healthy choices, but also because you’re quietly telling yourself that you’re worth making the effort for, you’re deserving of investing in yourself.

Issue 128 2023

Also, learning to say ‘no’ appropriately and not habitually over committing to tasks or even social-related, fun-sounding engagements can free up some time and head space, enabling better performance and greater levels of personal control. Often, at busy, overwhelming times, there are valid concerns about brain fog, forgetting things or not achieving everything that’s needed. Lists are a good way to ensure that nothing important is missed and it’s satisfying to cross items off once they’re done. Lists can also be a great way to prioritise the daily load. Brain fog is something many of us experience at times. Even young people find that intensive periods of cramming for exams, with hours spent pouring over class notes and test papers, gradually leave them feeling over-saturated and unable to absorb anything new. Being aware of this and treating it as an early warning sign of the need for a diversion and a break is important. Letting some things go, planning alternative activities, taking a little exercise, a walk outside, scheduling something fun to look forward to and implementing a good support network are all ways to provide opportunities to clear brain fog, drain the overwhelm and help maintain positive levels of support and self-care, especially at busy times when it’s needed the most.

Dine In Style: The Tower Hotel

The city of Lincoln has a very long history and, certainly, the heritage and traditions attract many visitors, as well as residents and locals, who are enthralled, constantly.

The Tower Hotel is located in the historic Bailgate area of Lincoln’s Cathedral Quarter.

Dating from the 11th century, the majestic Lincoln Castle is a major attraction of this city.

To commence my dining experience I opted for Pan-Roasted Scallops. This starter, with accompaniments, certainly set my taste buds in action - a splendid beginning to the meal.

Similarly, Lincoln’s magnificent Cathedral further delights visitors, all year through. The guided tours, of both the Castle and Cathedral, continue to be extremely popular and are often booked well in advance. The events that take place at the Castle and the Cathedral also have ‘regular’ attendees each year. Restaurants, in Lincoln, offer dining opportunities for everyone.

This 3AA Star Hotel is well-known in the area. The Tower Hotel is a favourite choice, for many, to visit, dine and stay, having fifteen beautiful, individually-designed en-suite bedrooms, along with an excellent restaurant. I visited at a lunch time and dined in their No. Thirty 8 restaurant.

For main I chose Roast Duck Breast (Pressed Root Vegetable & Braised Leg Terrine, Cranberry & Orange Braised Red Cabbage, Port Jus). The complementing flavours of ingredients, the succulence and tenderness, the presentation all absolutely ‘spot on’. ‘Compliments to Chef’,

for this dish. Head Chef, Craig and the brigade ensure the ‘magic’ and that all diners are suitably delighted, be it with the full menu, small plates, nibbles, sides or sandwiches. Desserts tempted and I selected Dark Chocolate Mousse. A great (towards) ending, for the dining occasion. ‘Distinctive’ dining is very worthwhile looking into too, with ‘Welly Wednesdays’ and ‘Sharer Thursdays with Wine’, as examples, proving extremely popular. GIFT THAT MONEY...

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 128 2023

Gifts That Money Can’t Buy: Why Gifting Your Time Is Becoming More Popular In a world that often revolves around material possessions, the true value of time and human connection is often overlooked at Christmas. However, a growing trend in gift-giving is shifting the focus from lavish purchases to meaningful experiences. Gifting your time has become increasingly popular as people realise that the most precious gift one can give is their undivided attention and presence. This article explores the significance of such gifts, with a particular focus on the value of friendships and family. 1. Quality Time with Loved Ones: In our fast-paced lives, finding quality time to spend with loved ones can be challenging. Consider gifting an experience that allows you to connect on a deeper level. Plan a day trip, organise a picnic in the park (an IOU for better weather is perfectly acceptable) or arrange a cosy festive movie night at home with popcorn, hot chocolate and warm blankets. These moments create lasting memories and strengthen the bonds with your friends and family. 2. Volunteer Together: Gifting your time can extend beyond your immediate circle. Consider volunteering together with your friends or family for a cause that is dear to your hearts. Whether it’s serving meals at a local shelter, participating in a community cleanup or supporting a charity event, giving back as a group can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience. And remember,

volunteering isn’t just for the festive period. People need support all year round. 3. Shared Hobbies and Activities: Take the time to discover shared hobbies or interests with your loved ones. Engage in activities that bring you together, such as cooking, gardening or crafting. By investing time in these shared passions, you not only create cherished memories but also deepen your understanding of one another. 4. Acts of Service: Sometimes, the best gift is simply lending a helping hand. Offer to run errands, assist with household chores, or provide support during a stressful time. Acts of service show your loved ones that you are there for them, ready to provide practical help and alleviate their burdens. In a society driven by consumerism, the value of gifting time and attention cannot be overstated. The trend of giving experiences rather than material possessions is gaining momentum, as people recognise the importance of fostering deeper connections with their loved ones. By gifting your time, you show genuine care, create lasting memories and strengthen the bonds of friendship and family. So, this Christmas, consider the priceless value of giving your time - the gift that money can never buy. PAGE

Invest In Your Relationships Over The Christmas Holidays So often people have high expectations And yet, Christmas is expected to be TV advertperfect, with smiling extended families beaming of their Christmas holidays. They spend weeks, even months, planning for everything to go smoothly and be picture perfect. Reality however, can mean that things don’t always go to plan, as unexpected things inevitably occur. And the long Christmas break may even highlight how far you’ve grown apart from each other. Many divorce lawyers comment that New Year is often their busiest time of the year, after the full-on closeness, stress and drama of a family Christmas, with everyone hot-housed together, placing an inordinate amount of strain on their relationships. Much of our normal day-to-day living consists of familiar, automatic routines, where we’re aware of our roles, know what’s expected of us, have our regular before we collapse in front of the TV or wander off exhausted to bed. We rarely spend intensive periods of time together.

happily over Christmas dinner, followed by the obligatory charades. However, any flaws or short-comings in our relationships can be put under the spotlight as we try to think of things to say and do, whilst expecting others to help and participate willingly. Invest in Christmas:

● Good planning can ensure that you allow yourself time for a de-stress session before the festive break, after having done all you can do in advance. You’ve planned the meals and activities, noted the times of carol services, Christmas mass, the various seasonal markets. So now it’s over to guests to choose their preferred activities. A pre-holiday massage could be a valuable way to relax, de-stress and look forward to the days ahead. ● Discuss in advance if people have specific things they’d each like to do over Christmas.

Carol services, pantomimes, brisk country walks, Christmas markets are often attractions that interest people, plus they get them out of the house and help burn off some energy. Returning afterwards to a warming homemade soup and crusty bread can provide a hearty welcome home. Discussion and compromise can incorporate different family suggestions and help them feel involved. Plus, any areas of potential dissent are discussed and ironed-out in advance. ● Check out what’s free. Whilst it great to spend Christmas relaxing and doing whatever takes your fancy, no one wants to spend January with financial worries or having to cut corners due to over-spending. Check the various prices and booking requirements. Parks, museums and beaches may provide hours of relaxed fun for minimal or no expense. ● Children often benefit from playing and spending time with other children and it could allow adults a little free time of their own. Discuss alternating sleep-overs with other families, it might offer some welcome respite. Then ensure you make the most of that freed-up personal time by doing companionable things together as a couple. ● Some couples only realise over long breaks that they’ve lost the art of chatting conversationally with each other. They’ve stopped sharing banter and chit-chat and now regularly only exchange routine information and updates. Christmas can be a good time to focus on talking, taking time for intimacy and

love-making, having fun together. It can be a great opportunity to sensitively discuss your relationship and agree on the importance of scheduling regular ‘us’ time as part of your New Year plans. ● If you’re spending much of Christmas hosting family or visiting others determine in advance how much time you want to allocate to these commitments. Could you alternate visiting, delegate some tasks, like setting the table or organising games, ask people to contribute their ‘signature dish’ or bring a bottle? Sharing the load also ensures that you allow some time to enjoy Christmas as a family or a couple. ● If you’re spending the holidays at home with no visitors or visiting ensure that some time is committed to fun activities and not just watching TV. Plan some leisurely time for relaxing lunches, walks and catching up on idle conversation. Aim to reconnect and enjoy each other’s company. Have plans for both wet days and dry days; picnics, treasure hunts, country walks or craft days, board games, baking and charades can be options. Take time to reconnect and remind yourself how good your relationship can be with a little regular effort. Use the opportunity to relax, practise sensitivity, mutual respect and commit to communicating well whilst finding ways to let go of some of your daily stresses and strains. Christmas can be a time to refresh both yourself and your relationship.

Christmas

Christmas - a time of joy and connection My aim is to help people live their life with but for some also a time of stress, intention to create health and happiness. comparison and expectation. Christmas can be such a wonderful time for many, but just as many individuals find it a challenging and difficult time.

So, with this in mind, lets think about what type of AuthenticallYou Christmas you might need for you and your family. Let’s focus on each pillar in turn,

You may remember last month we spoke about the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine, and the 6 pillars of health and wellbeing:

1. Mental Wellbeing and Stress Reduction - Think about what matters to you most this Christmas and focus on that.

1. Mental Wellbeing and Stress Reduction 2. Healthy relationships 3. Sleep 4. Physical Activity & Movement 5. Healthy Nutrition 6. Reduction or cessation of harmful substances.

We are surrounded by social media and adverts showing us “the perfect Christmas” which consists of an immaculate house, beautiful range of perfectly cooked food, families in matching PJs, and a tree overflowing with gifts, all with everyone looking happy and harmonious.

I am a GP, Lifestyle Medic and Performance Coach. I founded AuthenticallYou TM after seeing so many people with physical and mental illness, after losing themselves to live a life they don’t actually want.

We can really lose sight of what actually matters to us, and feel a pressure to conform, and live up to a standard which is simply unachievable and unrealistic, creating huge amounts of stress for ourselves. PAGE

CHRISTMAS

Issue 128 2023

Taking a step back, stopping to think and check in with ourselves about what we are trying to create, can really help us use our energy wisely and ultimately have a higher chance of enjoyment and contentment this Christmas. 2. Healthy Relationships - think about who you enjoy spending time with, who energises you and who brings you joy spend time with these people. At Christmas, we are often expected to spend time with our families. It is unusual for us all to get on with all of our extended family and their friends and family. Taking a moment before we spend time with people, to notice how we are feeling is really valuable. If we know that a certain Auntie always has an opinion on how we should be bringing up our children for example, think of ways to manage the situation which won’t result in conflict. Think about which boundaries matter to you, and how you might be able to hold them. For example, if you are going to see the in-laws, agree a time that you will leave by, so you know what to expect. Many of us experience feelings of grief over Christmas period, whether this is the loss of loved ones or other loss, for example, living with divorce and the grief this can bring, when Christmas may look different from the conventional one in all the Christmas movies. Self-compassion is key when managing grief. Learning to create space for these emotions to come and go is healthy. Try not to squash these emotions down, let them come and go freely with self-compassion and acceptance. 3. Sleep - try and stick to a routine. Sleep is so important for many of our bodily functions, it underpins our emotional wellness as well as physical. Adults need 7-9hrs of sleep every night. Our bodies naturally have a body clock, so sticking to a routine where possible

will help us maintain a healthy sleep pattern. Remembering to limit caffeine intake to before 2pm will help massively. Limiting alcohol will also support our sleep cycle. Our bodies need early daytime sunlight in order to start our sleep cycle, so trying to get some sunlight early in the day will help with sleep at night. Lastly, remembering to limit screen time before bed. Just 20 minutes on our phones undoes all the benefits of the daytime sunlight! 4. Physical Activity and movement movement is a great antidote to stress. Often over Christmas our routine goes out of the window, and we tend to move less than normal. All our bodily systems benefit from movement, and it helps to regulate our emotions too. Movement is a great antidote to stress. Planning ahead before Christmas and thinking about how you can still make time for movement will help combat some of the stresses and keep your bodily functions in alignment over the festive period. 5. Healthy Nutrition- all things in moderation. Christmas is often a time for overindulgence of food. Keeping a healthy, open attitude towards nutrition is really important. So many of the patients I see are wracked with guilt after Christmas. Remember all things are OK in moderation, and there is no pressure to eat anything you do not want to. Eating from a place of nourishment is a great way to think about fuelling the body, and can stop us being drawn into over eating unhealthy foods. 6. Reduction or cessation of harmful substances - don’t feel any societal pressure to conform. Once again, over Christmas we tend to over do it on the more socially acceptable drug, alcohol.

There is no safe amount of alcohol and it can dysregulate our emotional responses. Alcohol can really disrupt our sleep and therefore contributes to our ability to manage with some of the stresses and strains of the festive period. So once again, a little reminder, there is no pressure, and whilst it might feel like alcohol or drugs are required for a Christmas party, it is OK not to use them. Remember, no-one else is walking in your shoes and no-one else knows what you need. Have the confidence to create the Christmas that works for you. Merry Christmas from AuthenticallYouTM

She obtained her Diploma in Lifestyle Medicine from the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine (BSLM) and now works as the Regional Director for BSLM in the East of England in a voluntary capacity, helping to promote the 6 pillars of Lifestyle Medicine.

CAN WE ENJOY...

Issue 128 2023

Can We Enjoy Christmas And Stay Healthy? Christmas is a time when many of us indulge in the sweet treats and we do less movement than normal, often combining the two such as working our way through the celebration tub whilst watching our favourite Christmas movie! This can be a tricky time of year if we are trying to lose weight or stay healthy. There’s a lot to tempt us from Christmas fairs to the aisles in the shop that are dedicated to Christmas! Many of us are often conflicted this time of year, we want to enjoy ourselves but not put the pounds on. So as a Slimming World consultant I have a few tips and some advice from myself and my members. Tip 1 is to eat what you enjoy but not everything: My motto for the last few years has been, ‘don’t eat the milkyways!!’ - basically eat the foods you really like and leave the bits that are just ok (the milkyways for me!), this has helped me from being tempted to just eat because it’s there!

‘fruits to fill you up so then you won’t end up eating too much’ (see one of Krystal’s lovely creations above).

One of my members Andrea says ‘try just one of everything on your Xmas dinner plate, surprising how quickly the plate will still fill up’ and you don’t feel like you are missing out without overindulging. Another member’s, Krystal’s, tip for desserts is to have a small amount of what you like but to add

Tip 2 is to try some lower calorie recipes. Most of what we eat at Christmas can be swapped for lower calorie or lower fat alternatives. For example, my member Michelle recently reminded our Slimming World group of a popular recipe: defrosting and rolling up Linda McCartney red onion sausages for stuffing balls.

Or what about trying a festive soup? Using lots of leftover vegetables and top it with some turkey, low fat sausages or bacon medallions.

‘Most of what we eat at Christmas can be swapped for lower calorie

If you fancy a quick yummy treat, you could try Slimming World’s cinnamon mug cake: https://www.slimmingworld.co.uk/blog/eatcinnamon-bun-mug-cake/ Tip 3 is to remember you and your health are important! My member Tina put it so well: ‘the biggest gift you can give at Christmas is the gift of being kind to you, never be afraid to set boundaries at Christmas and never be afraid of saying, ‘no thank you’.’ For many of my members they are losing weight or becoming healthier because they have been told they are pre diabetic or they want to have more energy to be there more for their kids and grandchildren. People are often respectful of our decisions if we tell them what or why we are doing something and ask for their support in this.

or lower fat alternatives.’ Tip 4 is can you bless someone else? Christmas is a time for giving… if you get given lots of treaty foods, more than you would like to consume, think how you can bless someone else. Our Slimming World members have been donating items to Love Norwich’s Christmas Hamper appeal, making Christmas dinner in a box with all the treats for those in need at Christmas. See the pictures of the donations Love Norwich have been receiving (below left). Many shops also have foodbank baskets that you can donate to. Finally, whatever you do, don’t live in regret after Christmas, know that you have enjoyed yourself and it’s never too late to start a healthier regime and there is lots of support in making changes. COPING WITH...

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 128 2023

Coping With Christmas When It Triggers Painful Memories Christmas, a time often associated with joy and celebration, can be particularly challenging for individuals who carry painful memories, such as a bereavement or a difficult childhood. In this article, we will provide guidance on how to cope with the holiday season, offering practical strategies to navigate through this time while acknowledging and addressing the emotions that may arise. 1. Acknowledge Your Feelings The first step in managing painful memories during Christmas is to acknowledge your

emotions. It’s okay to feel a mix of sadness, grief or even anger. Give yourself permission to experience these emotions without judgment. Recognise that it’s natural to have a range of feelings, especially during a time that may remind you of difficult experiences. You certainly aren’t the only one going through this rollercoaster of emotions. 2. Seek Support Reach out to trusted family members, friends or support groups who can provide a listening ear and understanding. Share your feelings and memories with those who are willing to offer support. Sharing the burden can be cathartic and help alleviate some of the emotional weight.

Issue 128 2023

Consider joining local support groups, allowing you to share with those who are experiencing similar things.

‘If you are experiencing grief due to the loss of a loved one, find ways to honour their memory during the Christmas period. ’

3. Create New Traditions If old Christmas traditions are too painful, consider creating new ones. Engage in activities that bring you joy and allow you to focus on the present moment. Start a new hobby, volunteer for a charitable cause or gather with friends for a festive meal. By shifting your focus onto positive experiences, you can gradually build new memories associated with this time of year. 4. Practise Self-Care Prioritise self-care during the holiday season. It’s all too easy to face burn out at Christmas time. Engage in activities that nurture your wellbeing, such as exercise, meditation or spending time in nature, even if it is cold. Remember that there is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing! Ensure you get enough rest and maintain a balanced diet. Additionally, be mindful of your boundaries and don’t feel obliged to participate in events or gatherings that may trigger painful memories. Remember, taking care of yourself is essential.

5. Honour Your Loved One If you are experiencing grief due to the loss of a loved one, find ways to honour their memory during the Christmas period. Light a candle in their remembrance, visit their grave or where you scattered their ashes, create a photo collage or share stories about them with family and friends. By incorporating their presence in a meaningful way, you can keep their memory alive while navigating through the festivities. 6. Seek Professional Help If painful memories continue to significantly impact your well-being and ability to cope, consider seeking professional help. Therapists and counsellors can provide guidance and support tailored to your specific needs. They can help you process and navigate through the emotions that arise during this time and develop effective coping strategies. Coping with painful memories during the Christmas season is a deeply personal journey. By acknowledging your feelings, seeking support, creating new traditions, practicing self-care, honoring lost loved ones, and seeking professional help if needed, you can navigate this challenging time with compassion and resilience, gradually finding peace and healing along the way.
