There is no end to Guitar virtuoso Loki Rothman’s talents, from his appearance in SA’s Got Talent, being a guitarist for Jack Parow, and running his own music school. He recently made his debut as solo artist with his CD and guitar/ instrumental DVD, Iced recently had the privilege to ask him a few questions: 1. Explain your journey of becoming a solo artist? I think it all started after SA’s Got Talent. I use to play in bands and do session guitar gigs. The band split and I got solo booking enquiries for corporate events. I always wanted to pursue music as a career. So I thought it would maybe best not relying on others to stick it out with me. 2. How does Loki the guitar player (band member) differs from Loki the solo artist? At this stage when I’m in the band I’ve got a lot more freedom and time to think when taking the back seat. I also jump around and perform like a crazy person. When performing as a solo artist I’m a bit more focused seeing that I have to perform vocally as well. 3. Please collaborate on your biggest dream regarding your music career? I think just being able to play music my whole life. Obviously breaking into the international market as well. For now I’m focused on the SA market first. :-) 4. Collaborate on your plans for the rest of 2015? I’m going on tour with Jack Parow and playing some solo shows in December. I’m also releasing the final single from my debut album “The Way Back” called “Substitute Lover.” I have 1 last cover video in the bag. Then planning for next year. Ends.

Don’t Scrooge your Christmas! Scrooge McDuck once said ‘Here I sit in this big lonely dump, waiting for Christmas to pass! Bah! That silly season when everybody loves everybody else! A curse on it! Me, I’m different! Everybody hates me, and I hate everybody!’ It can be very daunting spending the festive season on your own with no loved ones in sight, even more so if you are trying to survive from a broken heart. Here’s some tips on how not to scrooge your Christmas:
1. Accept it’s going to be tough Don’t go into the denial stage and pretend this time of year is going to be amazing when you are actually dreading it. It is far better to accept that it won’t be easy. Once you have accepted the facts you have won half the battle. 2. Don’t idealise what you’re missing You feeling sorry for yourself! You’re missing your close family and friends, day dreaming about your previous partner and how you had the most beautiful Christmases together. Reality is they are either busy or moved on. Look at it this way, as a solo Christmas seems a merciful release from the hell of other people who once loved you and left you. There is healing in this process - by your next Christmas you will be stronger, a little less vulnerable, and a little braver to face the world all on your own.
That good old friend ‘Vino’ that seems like the perfect therapist in times despair, when over indulged acts more as a depressant. 4. Do stuff for other people You can find some proper Christmas spirit by spending the day aiding community organisations and charities. There is an immense reward in helping the vulnerable, needy animals, elderly people or putting on lunches for the homeless. The beauty of this is you will be spending time with others that carry the same pain as you, and there is a gift of compassion within this that can never be boxed in wrapping and bows. 5. Create your own rituals Have candlelit and aromatherapy baths with essential oils such and pine, cherry and vanilla. Enjoy the sounds of legendary Frank Sinatra, Joni Mitchell and Billie Holiday. Relive the classics films of Nightmare before Christmas, The Nutcracker and Love Actually. And lastly remember when you are alone over Christmas - ‘Be still - The stillness is an invisible workplace, where Creation is still occurring’ May you all have a safe and festive season.
3. Don’t use booze as a crutch You might be tempted to get blitzed on Christmas Eve to get you through the next couple of days, but don’t do it.

Sally Caravan (Lida Botha) met haar visioene, is Soufie se tawwe ouma wat in haar karavaan in die Beeslaer-agterplaas woon. Girla (Marga Van Rooy) is die ma van Vleis wat in Huis Herfsblaar in Witbank woon en by twee geleenthede met ‘n ander ‘boyfriend’ onverwags by Vleis-hulle opdaag. Een van hulle is die gladdebek ‘swank’ Tango du Toit (Marcel van Heerden), ‘the man of mistery’ wat soos ‘n dwarrelwind deur die Beeslaer-huishouding beweeg. Die ander ‘boyfriend’ is die suurbek Hollander Salty Sprinkelgras (Jan Engelen). Die twee skinderbek buurvroue is Hannie van Oorkant (Sandra Prinsloo) en die eksentrieke Huibie Hozapfel (Hélène Truter). Die bure langsaan is Basil (Willie Esterhuizen) en Gissie (Brümilda Van Rensburg) Bonthuis. Die verhouding tussen die Beeslaers en Bonthuise word vertroebel deur die Beeslaers se luidrugtige gekuier op die voor- en agterstoep met hul vriende Hillies Grobbelaar (Esther von Waltsleben) en Wouter Bungalow (André Odendaal), terwyl die Bonthuis-dogters (Emily en Jo-Anne Klue) se onophoudelike getokkel op ‘n vals klavier en die stink hoenderhok op hulle grens die Beeslaers, veral vir Vleis, ‘n steen des aanstoots is. Die Bonthuis-tweeling dogters se gespot met arme kaalkop Soufie wat haar hare weens stres verloor het, dryf sake op die spits, Vleis se frustrasies bereik breekpunt wat lei tot die geveg tussen Vleis en Basil en groot chaos in Frik Du Preezstraat. Die Beeslaers is verteenwoordigend van die blanke Afrikaner wat post-1994 ‘n eksistensiele verwarring beleef, wat alhoewel goeie voornemens, telkens in ‘n slaggat trap in hul pogings om aan te pas by ‘n nuwe politieke bestel, ekonomiese uitdagings en sosiale kwessies. Dit speel onder andere uit in hul verhouding met die

tuinwerker Cyril Phosa (Fezile Mpela), die polisieman Sargeant Kennedy Banda (Dambuza Nqumashe) en Minah Naidoo (Roshila Jarosz), die Indiër ‘girlfriend’ van hul seun Elvis. Wat die hoofkarakter Tsjaka betref - Hy is die altyd hongerige, senuweeagtige ‘pavement special’ hond van die Beeslaers, die hond met die vrygees wat vasgevang is agter die toe hek van Frik Du Preezstraat 24, wat heeldag na die afgesaagde stories van die disfunksionele Beeslaers moet luister en hul familie-dramas moet aanskou. Daar is ‘n sprankie van hoop as hy verlief raak op Mignon, die verlore poedel-meisietjie van Waterkloof, maar wat weer hartseer moet toekyk as haar gegoede eienaars (Heléne Lombard en Dawid Minnaar) in ‘n swart luukse motor opdaag om haar te kom haal. Sy ander hondevriende is Knoffel, die een wat hom verbeel hy het windhondbloed en Makkie die gesette teef wat vir Tsjaka by die voorhekkiehekkie kom kuier. Tsjaka verwys ook neerhalend na Peppie van die Mufamadi-egpaar, die ‘opstêrs’ hondjie met papiere. ‘n Pawpaw Vir My Darling is ‘n verhaal van oorlewing in ‘n uitsiglose bestaan, van humor en patos, van lief en leed, van vreugde en verlies, van hunkering, hoop en uiteindelike aanvaarding van ‘n lewe sonder ‘trimmings’.
