April is gearing up to be 1 busy month with quite a few festivals, like the annual Rand Show, the Holi one festival and the Future Fusion Festival that we’re really looking forward to attending at the end of the month! We also have 1 of my favourite local bands in the mag this month (Saarkie) not just because they’re unique in being an all-girl rock band but also because they are such down to earth people to hang out with. We also started a monthly column this month called the “Business in Review”, it’s primarily aimed at all entrepreneurs and wannabe entrepreneurs & businessmen/women and it show cases each month one of our clients and their business. It talks about how they started, what they do, what ICED* has done for them, what are their future plans & how they can be reached. Our Food Court is gaining popularity and we’re always looking for new or odd twists on old recipes so if you have a great family recipe or a secret recipe, send it to us and let us share it with the Vaal. April is one of the last months before entering our arch nemesis dominion, Winter, so go out this April, do more outdoor activities & enjoy our great night life before hibernation hits us!! Can you believe it that we’re already in April!! It felt like last week that we were popping the cork and wishing everyone a great 2015!! I think this month’s cover is one of my all-time favourites, and I also think our cover needed a face lift and it looks better than ever! Commerce BUSINESS IN REVIEW:DASSL Dassl is a pet feed & seed business that’s been advertising with ICED* for the last 6 months. The owners Amanda & Donovan have taken their small business in Sonlandpark and have grown to a point where they supply wholesale to pet stores and retail to the public. They came on-board with ICED* because they wanted to give their brand more exposure & help make their social media foot print bigger. We had a quick chat with Amanda, to see how advertising with ICED* has helped her grow and also to find out more about Dassl. FRANC: How did you come up with the name Dassl? AMANDA: DASSL is the 1st letter of each member of the family D = Donovan A = Amanda S = Scharnèe S = Scherize L = Leon = it is Donovan’s 2nd name and because he is the head of the family the name starts with him and ends with him. FRANC: How long has Dassl been on the go? AMANDA: We registered the company in August 2007. FRANC: What’s the one thing you love about your business? AMANDA: The new people we meet every day - each with a unique pet need. FRANC: What made you decide to advertise with ICED*? AMANDA: Each business is unique in its own way and ICED* caters for that special unique side without the clutter of random useless info no one reads. It is to the point with all the detail you need of a business set out in a glamorous style with high quality. In general it is a unique magazine not found anywhere else. FRANC: Is there any animal that you do not cater for? AMANDA: Jip… It is called the human animal. Continue on page 7..
Chris Brown in SA! Chris Brown is an American RnB pop artist who quickly rose to fame in the mid-2000s after a string of successful singles such as “Run It” and “Yo (Excuse Me Miss)”, followed by his successful self-titled debut album in 2005. Christopher Maurice Brown was born in Tappahanock, Virginia on May 5 1989. His interest and education in music began, like many pop singers, through his involvement in his church choir. Yet during his teenage years, his golden boy sensibilities waned and his interest in the emerging RnB scene in America took hold. After moving to New York, Brown was soon scouted by A&R executive Tina Davis, and subsequently signed his first record deal with Jive Records (whose alumni include pop singers Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake) in 2004. His debut, self-titled album, released the following year reached No.2 on the US Billboard charts and was soon certified double platinum. The following years were nothing but a string of successes for Brown as he further dominated the charts with pop singles such as “Beautiful People”, Page 06
“I Can Transform Ya” and “Yeah x3”. His ability to dance and choreograph routines has set him apart from his contemporaries, and due to this his live concerts have gained spectacular reputations.Brown has now certified himself as a staple of American pop and RnB music and remains a continual presence in the charts with his both his own material and collaborations with artists such as Jordin Sparks, Lil’ Wayne, and David Guetta. FRANC: What does 2015 hold in store for Dassl? AMANDA: Well 2015 started negative with a lot of uphill. But it will end with growth and prosperity. Planning to have an open flea market day in spring again and raise money for sheltered (abused and abandoned) animals. FRANC: If there one thing the public should know about Dassl, it would be? AMANDA: If we do not stock it, we will get it for your convenience. We also have a range of 15 top quality name brand dog foods to choose from. FRANC: And finally a question all us dog owners want to know, if your dog stops eating dog pellets because you have spoilt her/him too much, how do you get them back on it? AMANDA: 1st any home cooked human food is not good for any dog and you should never even consider to give it to your dog. Not only is it unhealthy for your best friend it is slowly shortening your dog’s lifetime with you. It is cruel to feed your dog any human food. Stick with dog food, it is the best thing you can do for your dog. 2nd start by giving it little by little each day dog pellets of good quality to introduce the special formulated balanced nutrition to your dog. It has all the vitamins and minerals, oils, fats and protein your dog need in one bowl. Stop feeding it human food as soon as possible. Soon it will only eat the dog pellets for no dog will starve itself by choice. 3rd and final be firm not cruel to punish the dog because your heart lacks discipline. You gave it human food and it is harmful to your dog now be patient, kind and loving until you have succeed in learning how not to feed your dog human food and teach your dog not to eat human food and only eat dog food. SAARKIE is still the only “All-girl-rock band” in South Africa who is responsible for every aspect and execution of their music. With their personlised style and vibe they present shows with a mixture of Afrikaans and English. Their music is a combination of talent and passionate energy that, combined with dynamics and synergy convinces you of listening and looking pleasure. Adèle Fouché is the lead singer and plays the guitar and harmonica. Lila Botha plays the drums and is also responsible for background vocals. Lourene Mostert plays the bass guitar, keyboard and can also be heard on background vocals SAARKIE tells us more about the production of their brand new album: “We, as Saarkie, are very proud and excited about looking back at all the hard work put in and trouble everyone went to, to make our third album, Reisiger, a success. It was an unbelievable experience and learning curve that took us through deep waters but also motivated us to work hard and sacrifice things for what you want in life. Our album is about the journeys of life as well as places that have carved stories and memories in our hearts. To produce a successful album in this competitive industry is very challenging, but we daily overcame stumbling blocks one by one and found inspiration to write about our experiences. It is so great to live our passion and to share our songs with people. The writing of the songs for the album took a lot of time and trouble and everyone who contributed worked on the album with heart and soul. We are eternally grateful for the indescribable team who stands with us.” In March 2011 their second album, ‘Identiteit’ saw the light. The album was produced by Sean Manley and Zanda Traut and was recorded at Manley Studios in Pretoria, where some of South Africa’s most well-known artists have recorded albums. A music video “Identiteit” was similtaneously released and is still played on various television channels. SAARKIE’s musical growth since the release of their first album is astounding and is greatly attributed to the fact that all the members are now musicians who have graduated and as such could master their instruments and could better their music in terms of quality. A DJ, Artist, Artist Manager, Booking Agent, Tour Manager, Marketing, Events, promotion & the list goes on, this one of a kind DJ does it all with passion & dedication, just like anyone should if you want to succeed in life! Originally from Budapest, Hungry this remarkable woman shows you can achieve anything in life as long as you love what you do and in put in the hours. ICED* was lucky enough to get a quick interview with her: Franc: Doing so many different job descriptions, which one is your heart, your passion? AMI-LECTRIX: My passion is unquestionably DJing, I started DJing for the love I have for music and I wanted to share my passion with the world. And then of course the business-side of things goes hand-in-hand with my passion. My background is business, I’ve got a Degree in Marketing and Business Management, and since day one that I decided to get into this industry, I didn’t just want to be a DJ but rather a brand-name with my trademark appearance and be an entertaining energetic performer and package-deal. So yeah, actually it’s difficult to say where my heart and passion lies as everything that I do and am involved in works directly hand-in-hand, and it’s what I love, it’s the career path that I chose. Franc: What & When was your first DJ gig, when you knew, this is what I want to do for the rest of my life? AMI-LECTRIX: It was back in 2006, it’s the year that I was finishing my degree. I came across an ad for the “Stones Sisters of Spin Amateur DJ Competition”, and without much hesitation, I of course entered. I just wanted a chance to be in a DJ box playing music and experience what it’s like to be a DJ. When it was my turn, as I was heading towards the DJ box, I was so super nervous, anxious, excited…multiple emotions at once! And as I got into the DJ box and started doing my thing, as nervous as I was and having the bare minimum training, I did what I had to do, played my 5 songs, got on the microphone a good couple of times and rocked the crowd! Having my Mom there part of the crowd played a MASSIVE role and part, having her support meant the world to me! As nervous as I was, the feeling of “I belong in the DJ box” came over me, and yeah, that’s when I decided I am going to pursue this. (Look out for part 2 in our May issue.)
