HEROES by Candice Heine

ICED* Heroes is an insert focused on giving our local heroes in and around the community a little more exposure, our first local hero is Morne Muller an ILS Paramedic

How would you describe what you do? Morne: So basically what we do is pre-hospital care for patients, everything that needs to be done before we transport the patient to hospital. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you? Morne: At an accident scene we were walking next to a train track, myself and 2 female colleagues when I tried to be a gentleman so I walked ahead and used the trauma board to flatten the grass when suddenly there wasn’t any ground under me and I fell into a ditch. My 2 colleagues were laughing so hard that they couldn’t help me out and my senior was in a panic calling my name. The only thing I could think about is the insects that were going to bite me. How did you get started? Morne: When I was 9, I was involved in an accident where I got hit by a car in front of my house and while I was still in hospital the Paramedics who helped me came to visit me and from there it sort of became a dream of mine so in matric I started my first aid courses and later on I did my BAA course which is a basic ambulance assistant course and I also volunteered with a company that provides a basis to work with paramedics. What education, schooling, or skills are needed to become a paramedic? Morne: To become a paramedic you need to pass matric and after school must complete the first aid courses then you need to volunteer 1000 road hours before you can complete the BAA course. Some companies also offer the opportunity to become an emergency ambulance assistant but if you want to drive the fast cars you need to complete the ALS course which takes 12 months. What advice would you offer someone considering this career? Morne: At the end of the day we all need money in life and this isn’t a career where you can get rich quickly. This is a choice you make, a dream that you want to follow.

On behalf of us here at ICED* we would just like to say thank you to you and your fellow paramedics for all the hard work and long hours you guys put in to save lives.

5 Steps to Master the Law of Attraction by Ninya van Zyl

Last month we discussed the first three steps to The Law of Attraction, this month well continue with five more steps.

Count your blessings - Be grateful of all the beautiful blessings you have already received and remember to count your daily blessings and become aware of the small moments of gratitude that fills our lives every single day. Be patient - Patience is a virtue. To be able to practice patience, The only reason why people do not have what they want is because they are thinking more about what they don’t want than know that it is an art of its own. Our timing and the Universe’s timing is different, so be patient. what they do. Trust the Universe - Stop worrying about how, when or where. In the words of the great spiritual leader himself, Budda, ”what The Universe knows best and you will receive your ultimate you think - you become, what you feel - you attract, what you heart’s desires at exactly the correct moment. Sometimes we may imagine - you create.” This has become a crucial factor to our not get exactly what we asked for because we are worthy of so spiritual growth and it also marries the concept of the law of much more. attraction. What you feel now, is what you are going to attract.

Love was truly in the air on 14 February when well-known Director, Paul Krüger and lead actress, Lika Berning opened a replica of the Paris, France lock bridge and “I love you wall” on the newly built movie set, French Toast Café. April 2015 will see the release of yet another Hartiwood film masterpiece, when the newly filmed French Toast will hit cinemas on 24 April. A replica Lock Bridge and I Love You Wall was opened on Valentine’s Day and other South African actors and actresses of the likes of Donnalee Roberts and Ivan Botha supported this event to show their support towards the South African film industry. The dramedy starring Lika Berning and Thierry Ballarine is one of the first South African features films that undertook a 12 day trip to Paris, France to capture some of the beautiful shots that will be seen in the movie. The remainder of the movie was shot on a custom built set in Hartbeespoortdam now running as a fully operational French Toast Coffee Café. The film however starts with beautiful scenes of a wine farm in the pristine Stellenbosch area. The film touches on matters of the heart when Photographer Lise le Roux (Lika Berning) who lives with her

father on a wine farm near Stellenbosch decides to embark on a journey to find a lost sibling in Paris, France. Lise only came to know about this family secret when she stumbled upon her mother’s old diary. Her mother passed away some time ago, leaving a secret French toast family recipe behind as a symbol of her legacy. On arrival in Paris she meets a French chef, Jean-Pierre Baptiste (Thierry Ballarin). Jean-Pierre is looking for a photographer for his new cookbook. Lise agrees to take the photos for his cookbook, if he returns the favour by helping her to track the clues to her lost sibling. Together they explore Paris to unravel a mystery but she may not be prepared for whatever it is that she will find.

Hartiwood films are well-known for the producing the films Pretville and Liefling but French Toast promises new and re-energised vision catering for Afrikaans and English audiences with a touch of French flair. taken from foodandhome.o.za Page 07

Entertainment Pieter Koen is back with 13 contemporarily styled reasons to sit up, pay attention and celebrate great original Afrikaans pop we can all relate to.

The ATKV and Huisgenoot/Tempo-awarded TV presenter and Jacaranda 94.2 DJ, Pieter Koen’s eighth impressive album, Wat Die Hart Van Vol Is, is fast being labelled his best collection yet. Since 1997 entertainment’s been his game, but it was his breakout EMI Music smash hit album, Skud Jou Biscuit, which turned Pieter into a national treasure. A status that continues to feed him, and his eight albums and one DVD catalogue, a good decade later. And as 2014 kicks into high gear Wat Die Hart Van Vol Is is the next chapter destined to influence our collective entertainment reality on a whole host of levels. “My music is better because of my time on radio and my four years presenting Jukebox,” he continues. “Each, in turn, benefits from my mad-hatter early days in music, and my more settled and subtle themes on Wat Die Hart Van Vol Is.” “I love what I do and intend doing it for a long time to come,” he asserts. “I’m an entertainer who’s curious as to what makes my audiences tick – especially when they’re confronted with me,” he jokes. What he does, as an all-round entertainer, makes Pieter Koen an extrovert. Who he is and what makes the maker tick, as a person, is reflected in

the 13 tracks that make up Wat Die Hart Van Vol Is. “It’s a little scary,” he admits of letting more of his personality show. “Adding another layer, and stepping things up a notch, that’s where I am right now and it’s invigorating!”His grandfather was a boere-orkes member, his mother sang, and now it’s Pieter himself who’s taken the family reigns, keen to leave a mark beyond his already impressive eight-album, multiple gold selling, track record. Some say, ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder’. For fans of Pieter Koen, and his music, the next while looks set to shine, all thanks to his carefully considered and credible 13-track album. Added to that is the prospect of seeing, and hearing Wat Die Hart Van Vol Is, and more than a handful of greatest hits, live over the coming year, and suddenly life is good. “I’ve worked extremely hard to get back to where I left off since my last album,” Pieter admits, “and I intend keeping it that way.” Vocal coaching, introspection, coupled with a whole lot of light and frivolous fun, and you’ve got Wat Die Hart Van Vol Is and the very best of Pieter Koen today. tomorrow holds is anyone’s guess, but if he’s got anything to do with it, it’s guaranteed to be good. “Wat Die Hart Van Vol Is is a perfect mirror of where I am now,” he concludes. Leaving nothing to chance, every aspect of what makes Pieter Koen great has been considered and refined, and in essence part of the all-round complete entertainment package. The end result is pure, unadulterated enjoyment from start to rocking finish!

An Interview with AMI-LECTRIX

buti’s inn

Page 14

(part two) by Franc dos Santos Franc: What’s the biggest gig you’ve played at here & overseas? AMI-LECTRIX: I’ve played at quite a few big events, difficult to say which was the biggest. There’s one that definitely stands out as it’s an event that I hosted and was super proud of it. It was back in 2010 when I hosted my “AMI-LECTRIX Big Birthday Bash” at Stones Edenvale, over 2000 people attended, it was a massive achievement for me back then. Franc: Sometimes when we go out, we see a DJ not reading the crowd and playing according to his own taste and failing dismally, what do you think is the biggest mistake a DJ can make? AMI-LECTRIX: In my opinion, there are a few big mistakes that DJs can make. One of them, as you mentioned, not reading the crowd and playing according to his/her own taste. Another biggie for me is when a DJ has no stage presence and doesn’t interact with the crowd – there’s nothing worse than seeing a DJ constantly looking down at the equipment or playing on his phone, and not looking up at the crowd; it’s pure disrespect to the crowd and yourself as a DJ! Another mistake is having a big ego and unpleasant attitude. Don’t get me wrong, of course one needs to be proud of his/her achievements, but it’s another thing walking around with a massive head and obnoxious attitude. One of my mottos is: ALWAYS REMAIN HUMBLE! Success and fame can come and go, and then what are you left with? It’s vital to remain down to earth, humble and pleasant, always! And for the final biggie for me for this interview is DJ behaviour and presence – of course DJs need to have fun and be crazy while playing, but it’s a no-go to be insanely intoxicated, looking awful, falling all over, messing up badly whilst mixing, etc. It’s important to have fun but yet be professional and presentable at all times – this is not just a sign for respect for yourself as a DJ, but it’s respect for your crowd and the nightclub/ venue/event. Franc: What’s your ultimate road trip? (ours would involve Ibiza & Tomorrow Land, all sponsored of course!!) AMI-LECTRIX: My ultimate road-trip would last about a year and would include flying as well not just road-tripping, haha! Id’ get my best crew together in our sponsored RV and start off in the USA, mission to “Burning Man” and “Electric Forest”, from there, go to South America to invade Mexico for “EDC Mexico”. From there fly across to Europe, pick up our sponsored RV and hit the road, in no specific order, go to: “B My Lake” and “Sziget” in Hungary (my birth-place); “Awakenings” in Holland; “Time Warp” in Germany; and “Amnesia” in Spain just to mention a few.

Franc: What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you while on decks? AMI-LECTRIX: There’s been a few, some would call it intense or embarrassing but for me I call it funny as I like to live on the happy crazy side of life, LOL! One of the things that pops into my head at this very moment is ejecting the wrong CD, and I can proudly say that this has happened to almost every one of us, haha! This has happened a few times – power cuts, either due to Eskom or the set-up not being able to handle the sound output, with this, I would always shout out something to the crowd to keep them hyped up and entertained, and they would interact back. Whatever the situation, it’s up to the DJ how he/she handles it and reacts. Franc: The DJ industry is predominately male, why do you think that’s the case? AMI-LECTRX: Yes, the DJ industry is still predominately male, although the number of female DJs has increased over the last few years, it’s still ruled by the guys. I think one of the reasons is the notion that it’s a “guy thing” to be a DJ. DJs have been around for decades and they’ve almost all been males. With this reason comes a sub-reason - being a DJ is extremely hard work and requires pure determination and dedication (now I’m referring to a full-time DJ as a career and not as a hobby), and because of the notion that it’s a “guy thing” I think that the females don’t feel confident and brave enough to enter the industry and take on the males. But at the end of the day, it’s not about competition amongst males or females, the industry is big enough for everyone. When I started DJing in 2007, there were a few female DJs, and in all honesty, I felt absolutely welcomes by the guys, they were like: “yay, here’s a chick that rocks…”. I know first-hand the ins and outs and ups and downs, I’ve experienced it all, and through this, the industry and experiences have given me “balls of steel”’ (excuse my bluntness). It’s a tough industry and not for the faint-hearted! Franc: What is your dream gig? If you could choose the Venue, country & DJ’s AMI-LECTRIX: Why can I only chose one, haha? One of my dream gigs has gotta be playing at “Burning Man” in the USA, with my favourite DJs: Stefano Noferini, Uto Karem, UMEK, Saeed Younan, Ummet Ozcan, Carlos Barbosa, Crazibiza, Angy Core, Joseph Capriati, Carl Cox, Matt Sassari, and Dubfire. Franc: Will we be seeing more of you in the Vaal in the near future? AMI-LECTRIX: You shouldn’t even ask, haha, ABSOLUTELY, or as I say, ABSOF*CKINLUTELY! Thank you for your time, and we definitely look forward to seeing & hearing you on decks! We also know you’ll have a great 2015 because there are very few people that have your work ethic & passion! And maybe we could tour together in the future on both our ultimate road trips!! Interview Ends

Parlotones ANTIQUES & ARTIFACTS

They are back in the Vaal, on the 16th of May at Barnyard Vereeniging, performing some of their hits, So book your ticket at Barnyard Vereeniging before they’re sold out as these tickets Will fly!! South African music giants, The Parlotones, are launching their new CD, Antiques & Artefacts, with a national tour of The Barnyard Theatres in April and May. Two years since the release of their last album, Stand Like Giants, this award-winning outfit will release their new album that will consist of a collection of tracks, compiled over a period of time at Belville Studios in Cape Town. With the band’s usual welcoming energy and style, Antiques & Artefacts will now take this quartet of friends on an altogether new journey. This is their first release, on their own, without any assistance from a label, and the album will be available exclusively at The Barnyard Theatres for the duration of the tour. During their career, The Parlotones have released seven full length studio albums, headlined the 20000-seater Coca-Cola Dome in their hometown, performed to an audience of a billion at the 2010 World Cup kick-off concert, and were handpicked by Coldplay to open the British band’s stadium shows in Johannesburg and Cape Town. In 2011, The Parlotones staged an original rock theatre production, Dragonflies & Astronauts, which was broadcast live around the world in 3D via DIRECTV and in 2D on Facebook. They have toured extensively across Southern Africa, Europe, UK, America and have had a few visits to Japan, South America and Australia. Ever since these four school friends formed the band in the Johannesburg suburb of Roodepoort in the late 90’s, they have always aspired not only to have fun making music, but also to give back to their community, and have been involved in a vast array of charitable events.

The Parlotones consists of Kahn Morbee on lead vocals and guitar; Glenn Hodgson on bass, keyboard and vocals; Paul Hodgson on lead guitar and keyboard; and Neil Pauw on drums. They have been called Indie, Rock, Pop and Alternative. Take your pick. Besides newly released material from Antiques & Artefacts, Barnyard patrons can also expect to hear the hit songs that made the band famous, including Beautiful, Push Me To The Floor, Giant Mistake, I’m Only Human, Disappear Without A Trace, and Baby Be Mine in their show at the venues. The Barnyard Theatres have established themselves as hugely popular live-music venues with many of South Africa’s top bands and performers. Part of the appeal of The Barnyard Theatres for live music is they offer intimate venues with great sound and lighting. They also offer a laid-back environment where patrons are able to enjoy food and drinks before and during the show seated at tables and counters. Audience members can also meet the band in the bar after the show to buy paraphernalia (including the new CD exclusively) and get autographs. Tickets are R200 per person, and the list of show dates:
