Many studies have demonstrated a clear connection between being out-doors and better health. Adults age 55+ also reported better physical functioning, were less afraid of falling, and scored higher on questions gauging their quality of life. What factors lead to these benefits? The exercise required for getting outdoors might be part of the reason. Another factor may also be associated with sun exposure and its connection to a healthy supply of vitamin D. Also known as “the sunshine vitamin,” Vitamin D helps combat osteoporosis, supports the immune system, and reduces inflammation. Natural light is known to boost people’s moods and help to minimize depression and anxiety. Harvard notes that several studies have found a connection between mental health benefits like improved mood, higher self-esteem, less stress, short term memory improvements and “green exercising,”. “Green exercising” is engaging in physical activity while in an open, natural space. In fact, more exposure to green spaces are associated with a lower mortality rate and a reduced risk of dying from cancer, kidney disease, or lung disease. So, get out today and enjoy some of the natural spaces around the Tri-City area! Take a walk at Lake Elizabeth or Coyote Hills, hike at Mission Peak, or cruise on a bike ride at the Vargas Plateau. Whether you’re exercising, relaxing, or just enjoying a cup of coffee, spend some time outdoors. Your body and mind will appreciate it. East Bay Regional Parks offer 73 parks within Alameda and Contra Costa County. Check out ebparks.org for more information on outdoor spaces today.
