Christy Gumberg and her dog Pumpkin
As we close out another exciting and impactful year, I want to take a moment to reflect on all that we have accomplished together. Your support makes a world of difference for the animals in our care. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I thank you!
First, I am delighted to offer you a behind-the-scenes look at our HSBC clinic in this issue. Our clinic is a hub of activity where dedicated professionals work tirelessly to provide medical care, spay/neuter services, and much more. You’ll find stories of resilience and hope, including the incredible journey of Bruce.
The holiday season kicked off after Thanksgiving with our Black Furrday adoption event, which was a resounding success. Thanks to widespread media attention, many of our furry friends were adopted over the weekend. The joy of seeing long-term residents finally leave for loving homes is unmatched.
Our social media presence continues to grow at an astounding rate, with more than 2 million followers across Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok. Several of our stories have gone viral. This growth raises awareness for our mission, as well as animal shelters as a whole. It’s heartwarming to see the ripple effect of your
On the Cover: Roxanna and her babies were transferred to us from Taylor County Animal Control when Hurricane Helene was headed toward Perry, Florida. Too young for adoption, the family went to a foster home to get the TLC they needed. Once returning from foster the kittens were adopted immediately; soon after, mama Roxanna went home to Coral Springs.

Every donation, big or small, helps us provide care and love for the animals who need us most.
On a personal note, I want to share a fun fact: my beloved dog, Pumpkin, is a rescue from the Humane Society of Broward County. I adopted her when she was just 8 weeks old, and she’s now a sprightly 11 years old. Pumpkin is a daily reminder of the incredible impact adoption can have — not just for the animal but for the adopter as well. Thank you for being a part of our journey and for your unwavering commitment to our mission. Together, we are creating brighter futures for countless animals.
Warm regards,

Our friend Eric Yutzy, WPLG Local 10 news anchor, showed support for the HSBC when he and his family decided they wanted to bring some Guinea pigs into their fold. A sweet brother and sister duo captured their hearts; now named Jack Jack and Daisy, the cuddly critters have made their tiny little pawprint marks on all the Yutzys’ hearts.
Longtime friend Julie Guy from 101.5 Lite FM came in when she decided she wanted some furry love in her life. She adopted an adorable tuxedo kitten named Gino.
Since 2015, the relationship between HSBC and J.R. Dunn Jewelers has been a special one. The Dunns are a family of animal lovers who believe in giving back and making a difference, so together we crafted the Diamond in the Ruff program. Each week a different shelter animal is selected to be featured on J.R. Dunn’s social media, as well as ours; their adoption fee is covered, and they get plenty of extra exposure too. Hundreds of pets have benefited as a result.
The PinKnockers bowling league from Strikers alley in Sunrise did a donation drive for the animals, collecting $1,258 in cash and loads of food, toys, towels, blankets, and more! Many thanks to this generous group of people for their hard work and support.
Pay tribute to a loved one while supporting the HSBC! For a $300 donation, a brick with your message will be placed in the pathway of our Reflection Garden. To order, call 954.266.6818.

As more and more people go the digital route for their news rather than having newspapers delivered to their homes, the shelter’s supply of donated newspapers dwindles. We use newspapers in surgery prep and in the cat adoption areas, so if you’re still a news subscriber and would like to help, we’d love to assist in your recycling efforts! Newspapers (but not glossy magazines or ad sheets) are happily accepted at the shelter.
We’re happy to report the following new homes found during September, October, and November: 3
Cats: 205
Kittens: 403
Dogs: 353
Puppies: 193

The Gold Award is the highest achievement within the Girls Scouts USA, earned by Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts. Only 5.4% of eligible Girl Scouts successfully earns this distinguished award. And our very own HSBC volunteer Anneliese Hsiao can now claim to be among this elite group, having created and executed her “Pet Safety for South Florida” booklet.
Annie began her volunteer career with the HSBC as a Teen Club member nearly five years ago, though she has been helping our shelter animals since she was a Brownie, making toys for the dogs. She thought it was important that pet owners know the potential dangers that South Florida can pose to their beloved animals, so she went to work on a plan, spending 17 months perfecting her booklet. HSBC Veterinarian Doctor Rogers and our Education Coordinator, Darlene Feldman, guided her along and fact-checked all her information. Annie was able to produce 500 copies, which she donated to the HSBC for including in our adoption go-home packets. We are so impressed with her hard work and dedication to improving the lives of animals in our community. Not surprisingly, Anneliese aspires to become a future veterinarian!
Our oh-so-popular Spring Camp, happening the week of March 24 – 28, has just 18 spots available. For kids ages 6 to 12, it’s a great way to dive into a unique hands-on experience at the shelter! We’ll spend loads of time with the animals -- cleaning, playing, bathing, cuddling, and making
toys and treats for them. Camp hours are 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., with a pizza lunch being served on Friday. The fee of $325 includes an HSBC camp T-shirt. Hurry to sign up before it’s too late! Visit humanebroward.com under the “Youth” tab.
Education Mascot Ollie is here to answer your animal-related questions. He’ll use his best doggy wisdom to address whatever you may throw his way – so don’t be shy! Write to him at the HSBC, ATTN: Education Department, or email him at ccrane@hsbroward.com.
Dear Ollie,
I have a question. How much do Great Pyrenees shed?
Sincerely,
Zelda Van Zandwijk
Hi Zelda,
I was so excited to get your letter that I ran around the house and did the ZOOOOOMIES! So, you noticed that dogs have fur over their whole body, huh? My hair is short and shiny. Mom says I am a handsome boy! That makes my tail wag. I do shed a bit even though my hair is short. All dogs, apart from naturally bald or hairless breeds, shed their fur over time. This natural process is their body’s way of replacing old, dead, or damaged fur with new fur. Some breeds shed more than others, and this is often more noticeable in the spring or autumn. My friend Teddy has thick fur and he’s losing a lot of fur right now. Once he sheds his undercoat, he looks very handsome. Now, I dunno any Great Pyrenees dogs but I saw one at the park one time and he was huge and white like the abominable snowman. I heard through the dog vine that these dogs shed all year long! That’s a lot of vacuuming the house. My Mom says dogs like that need to be brushed and groomed daily. She said she prefers my fur…thanks Ma, you’re making me blush! So if you’re thinking about getting a very furry four-legged friend, make sure to put on your chore list to groom daily -- and they will need to be professionally groomed as well! That’s a lot of work but having a new BFF is worth it!
Thanks for writing to me Zelda!
Your friend, Ollie
You can’t make a snowball in Florida but you CAN make a snowball treat for your dog and the dogs at the shelter!
Ingredients:
• 1 cup of unsweetened shredded coconut, plus more to roll balls in
• 1/2 cup coconut flour
• 1 cup oats
Directions:
• 1 cup plain nonfat yogurt
• 1/4 cup unsweetened natural peanut butter
• 1 tbsp coconut oil
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
In a bowl, mix dry ingredients. Add wet ingredients and mix well.
Take dough by handfuls and form into balls.
Roll each ball in coconut, squeezing to help coconut stick. Refrigerate up to a week, or freeze. Bring some to share with the dogs at the shelter!
Twins Evan and Myles Goldstein are members of our Kids Club, and they enjoy coming in to sit and read to the shelter animals. After a particular reading session with a dog named Sadie, the entire family met and fell in love with this sweet pup. Sadie now calls Plantation home and has two wonderful boys of her very own. Social media platform The Dodo did a story featuring Sadie, and her video on our TikTok has grown to more than eight million views!
The Goldstein family now numbers five!
This reading session between Sadie and Evan led to a new happy home.
In October our staff veterinarian Dr. Cindy Rogers traveled to Guatemala to participate in a veterinary outreach venture organized by local veterinarian Dr. Linda Markley. A volunteer at the homeless clinics we operate here with our partner Street Dog Coalition, Dr. Markley started a nonprofit in 2018 to provide veterinary care for stray cats and dogs in Guatemala. Since then, she has led ten bi-annual trips, all of them staffed by volunteers.
On this 10-day mission a team of 11 veterinary professionals including four veterinarians, three fourth-year veterinary students, and four veterinary technicians was based in the city of Jutiapa, located in southern Guatemala. They were hosted by the Guatemalan charity DIG, which stands for “Dream. Invest. Grow.” and provides education, medical services, nutrition, and other outreach to the indigenous community. The local animal shelter where the team worked, Corazones Jutiapanecos, was started by a former Guatemalan lawyer named Nery Alberto Sanguero who now devotes his life to saving injured and abused animals in his country.
The shelter animals that were tended to received necessary vaccines along with flea/tick/heartworm prevention. Crucial spay and neuter surgeries were also performed on 80 cats and
dogs. Since starting these trips, there has been a noted decrease in tick infestations, along with lower rates of transmissible venereal tumors - a cancer most often spread through mating. Of course, the fact that animals are being spayed and neutered significantly reduces the number of homeless kittens and puppies being born. In addition to caring for the Corazones shelter pets, the team visited nearby small towns to provide vaccine clinics that included monthly prevention medications.
“I am grateful that in addition to the local outreach HSBC performs, we were able to help contribute to the great work that Dr. Markley leads,” stated Dr. Rogers. “This trip is an excellent example of how groups can work collaboratively to help create a larger positive impact. There are endless ways we can help pets in our local or broader communities…whether we are donating our time, supplies, money or expertise. No contribution is too small and can positively affect the lives of animals around us.”
Because of donations from caring supporters, the HSBC is able to help animals in need – even beyond our own community. If you would like to donate to assist in such efforts, please use the envelope included in this newsletter or go online at humanebroward.com.
Our therapy teams made their annual visit to see the kids at Catholic Hospice’s Camp Erin in October. Some children played ball with Wall-E, Eva, and Jedi, while others enjoyed simply hanging out with Zoe and Fritzy. As always, these special dogs doled out plenty of warm wags and comforting cuddles, offering emotional support to the children as they navigate the grief of losing loved ones.
Testing can be a stressful time for students of all ages. To help alleviate some of that anxiety, therapy teams visited Nova Southeastern University as they prepared for tests before their winter break. Pictured here with NSU students are Blue and his mom Jennifer.
Greg, Jeff, and their golden retriever Maripat joined the HSBC Animal Assisted Therapy Program in April of 2022. Since they had prior experience in therapy work with their past golden retriever, they knew Maripat’s personality was ideal for the role of therapy dog. There isn’t a person Maripat does not love, and she greets everyone with a wagging tail and a toy in her mouth. The trio regularly visits seniors at First Presbyterian Church Adult Center, and holds the Wags & Tales program at Imperial Point Library where children practice their reading skills with Maripat. We are very lucky to have Jeff, Greg and Maripat as a part of the HSBC AAT family.
How heartwarming it is to see the bright smiles on the faces of people visited by our therapy teams! Sadie and Eva brought their special glow when they visited Northeast Focal Point (NEFP) Alzheimer’s and Adult Day Care Program at Braithwaite Center in Deerfield Beach.
Several of our therapy teams attended Hollywood’s Howl-o-Ween event in October where the dogs showcased their therapy skills while decked out in creative Halloween costumes. Bingo, Fitzy, Lola, Moki, and Zoe were joined by Chewy, an Education Dog, to strut their stuff down the catwalk, spreading joy and smiles to all in attendance. These pups really are great ambassadors for the important work that the HSBC does in the community! Pictued here are Lola, Chewy, and Zoe.
With boots and clubs ready, the 26th Annual Marti Huizenga PAWS on the Green Women’s Golf Tournament rounded up a grand ol’ time at Grande Oaks Golf Club on November 4. Embracing the Rescue Roundup theme, players showed off their best cowgirl spirit. Chairwomen Monica Correll, Michelle Howland Sussman, and Jamie Stiles were thrilled to share that the event wrangled in over $85,000 for the animals!
The festivities kicked off Sunday evening with a pre-tournament cocktail party at Kelly and Keith Koenig’s lovely home. Players enjoyed cocktails, dinner, shopping with a few on-site vendors, and a putting contest. Each guest also received a key to try their luck at unlocking a special prize.
As players arrived at Grande Oaks on Monday morning they were warmly greeted by tail-wagging puppies. At check-in, golfers could purchase prize drawing tickets, with winner Matt Organ choosing from four fabulous trips. Participants could also buy Player Recovery Kits that gave them a few fun opportunities to improve their game. There was cuddling with adoptable pets at the Critter Corral, and plenty of bidding on fabulous items available on the online silent auction. A delicious brunch gave golfers fuel for the day before teeing off.
During play, several on-course contests kept the competition constant. One unique opportunity was to “Buy the Pro,” where pro George Haggerty and his golf-happy pup Sky would drive the ball for foursomes – complete with Sky teeing up the ball for George.
Following a great day of golf and camaraderie, players returned to the clubhouse where they relaxed during the cocktail hour before sitting down to dinner. The much-loved tradition of the Poem

Game continues on as a highlight of the evening. Next was a live auction with auctioneer Whitney Dutton at his finest, bringing in more than $9,000 on items that included an Intracoastal cruise for eight, a stay at the Waldorf Astoria in Maui, a stay at the Armony Luxury Resort in Punta de Mita, Mexico, and tickets to the Phoenix Open.
Winners of the tournament were announced at the end of the night, with the foursome of Maureen Carr, Anita Hart, Angela Vanore, and Michelle Gentile taking home the award for the overall tournament champions.
PAWS thanks their team of dedicated volunteers who helped to make the event such a great success, as well as the sponsors whose support makes it all possible. he annual Fashion Forward for PAWS Luncheon and Fashion Show, hosted by Neiman Marcus Boca Raton, was another sensational success! The event raised a recordbreaking more than $85,000, despite lastminute rescheduling due to Hurricane Milton. Chairs Christy Gumberg and Julie Strauch were thrilled to share the exciting total.
Upon arrival, guests were greeted with champagne and wine, then welcomed to have their photos taken at the step & repeat while cuddling with adoptable animals. Some of those lucky pets found forever homes that very afternoon!
The luncheon also offered prize drawings, with highlights including a $1,000 Neiman Marcus shopping spree won by Nicole Hanaka, House of Creed’s new “Delphinus” fragrance claimed by Carmen Hotchkiss, and a stunning JIA JIA Arizona Ombre Ruby Pearl Gold Bead Double Long Necklace awarded to Lucy Chopek. Other lucky winners included Michelle Kamensky, winning a Michael Aram Luxury Pet Package, Peggy Smith

Departments: Photographer for the Website, Education, Walk for the Animals Committee, Snuggle Delivery Assistant, and sub for Greeter and Vaccine Clinic. (Formerly Cattery, Board of Directors, and Animal Assisted Therapy Program)
Started Volunteering: January 2002
Pets at Home: 9-year-old black tri miniature American shepherd Murphy, adopted from a rescue group, and two cats from HSBC – Moose, a 4-year-old, 15-pound tabby, and Sebastian (aka “Bad Bunny Boy”), a scrappy nine-pound, two-year-old orange and white boy who keeps Moose and Murphy “on their paws” every day!
Favorite Part of Volunteering: “I love being a part of an organization which serves our community in so many ways and has done so for 80 years! I enjoy working with my photography team to take the perfect photo of each pet with the hope that someone will instantly fall in love with their picture on the website and come in to adopt them. As a retired teacher, I am fortunate to be able to use my skills to educate children of all ages (and adults) through the wide variety of programs offered by our amazing Education Department. Being a part of the Walk for the Animals committee gives me the opportunity to help organize our largest fundraiser of the year, providing much-needed funds for the shelter. I love filling in as a Greeter or in the Vaccine Clinic as I enjoy welcoming our visitors and sharing all the “paw”some services we offer. The HSBC is my home away from home and I look forward to every shift. It is a huge part of my life, and I am blessed to be a part of the HSBC “family” for the past 23 years!
What the Animals Say: “We love posing for Rhonda when it’s picture time! She’s always so patient and knows how to take the perfect shot to show off how adorable we are. That is super important ‘cause it helps us find our new families. When it isn’t picture day, sometimes Rhonda brings kids and teens for a visit, and we can hear her telling them all kinds of good stuff to know called “education.” It feels like Rhonda is always there for us, doing whatever she can to help. She is the cat’s meow!”
There are lots of ways you can help us to help the animals. Just choose a wish here and make it come true. Feel free to grant as many wishes as you like! Should you have any questions, please call 954.989.3977.

Foster parenting is hugely valuable to any animal shelter, as it gives cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies the extra time and
care they need before they can be placed for adoption.
We are very much in need of foster homes for adult animals, and medical fosters as well.
Some pets may enjoy watching TV when something interesting comes on the screen, while others may find television very stressful. Barking and jumping up at the TV is not uncommon, especially if another animal is shown moving around or being noisy. Your dog is stimulated by sound and movement in the environment and with technology rapidly advancing, our home entertainment systems are becoming larger and louder. Think seventy-inch-high definition with surround sound, and it’s understandable that the experience may be overwhelming for animals that are more sensitive to environmental stimulus. It is also important to remember that a dog’s vision is different from ours. While they are not color blind, they do see colors differently and do not have the ability to distinguish reds and greens. And while their focus is much less sharp, they have a broader area of focus and are better at tracking fast-moving objects. Dogs also have a much faster flicker focus than humans, so TV may appear to them more like a strobe light with a picture and then a black space, while our vision allows us to see a constant stream. This could be quite disorienting for them, as well as the lack of any other sensory information such as smell. Sound can be very stimulating for your pet, along with the visual of a TV. Most dogs will react to a primary sound such as a barking dog or a siren and then the secondary visual response. If they hear a dog barking on the TV, most dogs are likely to become interested and some may join in on the barking. This only becomes problematic when your pet overreacts to the stimulus.
Taraji’s favorite TV shows always include birds.
Tips to help:
• Redirect your dog when they become aware of the TV stimulus; earlier in the sequence is better.
• Give a yummy food, toy, or favorite bone to engage with when you are watching TV.
Holly is obsessed with the television, to the point of requiring intervention at times.
Things to look for that may indicate a problem
• Hypervigilance – pacing in front of the TV, frequently focusing on the TV
• Overstimulation without the ability to settle – repetitive barking at something on the screen
• Jumping up towards the picture
• Muzzle-punching, pawing, or biting at the screen
• Make sure your pet is getting plenty of interactive exercise, especially if they are young and full of energy.
• Mute the sound; controlling the volume can eliminate your dog’s reactive response.
• Practicing some avoidance may be needed to allow your pet time to calm down. Change the channel or turn off the TV temporarily.
• Know your dog’s limitations and have realistic expectations. (Your dog may not be able to watch a wolf documentary on Nat Geo.)
What about felines?
Cats may enjoy the TV more than your dog! Cats are an interesting mix of prey and predator, which gives them a unique outlook on life. For them, sound and movement are attractive stimuli that can make TV a wonderful environmental enrichment tool, particularly if you have a single cat. Squirrels and birds on TV can provide great entertainment for a bored kitty. The color and flicker focus for felines is very similar to canines, but they are more stimulated by movement. Rapid movement may engage your cat’s predatory instincts and catch their attention, while some cats would rather not be bothered!
Safety First:
• To avoid potential injury, never leave you pet alone with the TV on.
• If you are using the TV for environmental enrichment, don’t overdo it. Short sessions are best.
• Be sensitive to individual limitations.
• Do not punish your dog for barking at the TV. This may increase stress and cause the problem to escalate.
• If you and your pet are experiencing difficulty, seek help from a professional trainer.
Follow along as we take you through an especially busy Saturday-to-Saturday at our in-patient clinic. From Saturday, October 26 through Saturday, November 2, our medical staff and volunteers may have been stretched a bit thin but, as always, they got the job done with professionalism, efficiency, care, and compassion.
Saturday, October 26 was an extremely busy day!
• Albert the bulldog came to us when his owner had to go to a homeless shelter; the two had been living in his car, and the owner knew that a safe place was needed for Albert. The intake exam showed neck fold dermatitis with an infection. Clinic staff clipped, scrubbed, flushed, and medicated the area. Poor Albert was also treated for an infection in both ears. He soon began a daily therapeutic laser protocol on the affected neck area and, over several days, healthy tissue began to form.
Albert receives a laser treatment with our brand-new machine, which was purchased thanks to supporters’ generous donations.
Albert’s treatment continued for a few weeks and on Saturday, November 23 he made his debut on Local 10 as the featured Pet of the Week, as well as on social media dressed in a daisy onesie. That drew some attention! Albert’s soon-to-be family spotted him and knew he was destined to be theirs.
• We brought in orthopedic surgeon Dr. Cabrara to perform surgery on Smoke, a doodle that had been transferred to us as a stray from a veterinary hospital in Sunrise. Smoke had been brought there by a Good Samaritan after he was hit by a car, suffering two broken legs. He was transferred from the first animal hospital to an emergency vet hospital where he received IV meds and fullbody radiographs. There was blood in the abdomen, and a urinary catheter was placed. The initial veterinary hospital had scanned Smoke for a microchip and contacted the owner but once the cost involved was discussed, that person no longer wanted their dog.
Smoke was given supportive care for pain and infection while awaiting his surgery to correct both broken legs. His post-op recovery went well and, to everyone’s delight, was adopted by Christy, the person who had found him and got the help he needed. Just a few days after surgery, Smoke was able to go home with his rescuer where he continued healing.
Smoke, bandaged and on an IV, was a very good patient.
• Nacho, a French bulldog that had had surgery on a cherry eye and been adopted a month earlier, returned for surgery on the second cherry eye.
• We assisted a rescue group that was adopting out a Guinea pig who needed to be neutered. The adopter, who had a female at home, was adopting a male and did not want the pair to have babies.
• Staff veterinarians evaluated three-year-old husky Kobe, who was unable to walk properly due to a malformation of his hind legs. Radiographs were taken of Kobe’s spine, hips, and hind legs, and he was neutered while under sedation.
After consulting with several vets including an orthopedic surgeon, it was determined that Kobe had bilateral lateral luxating patellas -- his kneecaps were not where they should be, so his knees couldn’t bend and straighten. He had been “stuck” flexed since he was six months old. Although this was surgically treatable, due to the chronicity of his condition and years of inactivity the muscles and tendons would not easily adapt.
We posted about this sweet boy on social media and the perfect home came in for him. Kobe’s future needs were thoroughly discussed, and he soon went home to a new sister (also a shelter alumni) and a brother too.
• Bruce, an 82-pound lump of love with patchy skin, received an extensive dental procedure by Dr. Gonzalez, a dental specialist we brought in. The process of scaling, polishing, and the removal of several rotten teeth took more than two hours. Sevenyear-old Bruce had been found tied to a tree on our property one night by a volunteer on his way home, who heard crying in the darkness. heard crying in the darkness. He phoned a staff member, and together they brought the dog inside.
Once Bruce checked through for adoption, he was featured in a social media post that went viral. His new mom-tobe drove from Texas to bring him home the week before Thanksgiving.
Bruce, Texas-bound, with his new mom on go-home day.
• Marilyn, brought to the shelter when her owner could not afford the medical treatment she required, had been a gift from a brother in Georgia who breeds dogs. The young French bulldog had a ruptured corneal ulcer in one eye and a cherry eye in the other. The owner had taken Marilyn to a veterinarian, who recommended a specialist; they realized then that a French bulldog would be too costly, so surrendered her to us. Four days later Marilyn was spayed, had vulvaplasty surgery to remove excess skin folds that were causing problems, and her cherry eye was repaired. The right eye with the ruptured ulcer was beyond saving and had to be removed. Marilyn was sent to a foster home briefly to heal; she was adopted soon after.
Tuesday, October 29
• We received a transfer of seven dogs from Broward County Animal Care and Adoptions. All had been held for the mandatory stray waiting period and were not having any luck finding homes. The hope was that a change in scenery would help the dogs and give them a better chance at finding their forever families. After giving the pups a few days to adjust, clinic staff began the process of vaccinating and giving them medical check-ups. We are happy to report that within three weeks, all seven were happy and secure in new homes!
Wednesday, October 30
• In between prepping animals for surgery, Vet Tech Tiffany Lucero bottle feeds a kitten that is going into foster care. Its siblings, staying warm in the incubator in the background, wait their turn.
Thursday, October 31
• Daisy the kitten was admitted for surgery. Adopted from us just a few weeks before, Daisy had somehow managed to ingest a sewing needle that obviously needed to be removed. Surgery went well and Daisy was able to go home the same day.
• Another kitten, weighing just 1.1 pounds, came in after being found stray and injured. We named her Halle. Radiographs showed a dislocated vertebra and a possible pelvic fracture. Since she was too small for surgery, she went to foster care to grow and gain another pound. The plan was to later amputate the right hind limb, and a large portion of the tail due to nerve damage. While healing in foster care, though, she started to use the leg again and the nerve damage began to repair. She did require a tail amputation, and was soon after adopted into her new home.
• We had a Surrender Prevention case to treat, with a recheck done for an outside patient whose dog had a hematoma of the ear. (Surrender Preventions are medical cases where we give assistance to help pets stay in their homes rather than being given up for adoption.)
Friday, November 1
• The clinic hosted its Big Fix-It Friday with the ambitious goal of sterilizing 100 owned felines. Their goal was nearly reached, with 96 cats and their people showing up for spay and neuter appointments. The clinic was bustling with activity!

• An adopted rabbit named Coco received her spay surgery.
• HSBC Medical Director, Dr. Dayton, did a re-check on Kion and Kiara, two adopted kittens that had been treated for Feline Infectious Peritonitis. Both kittens came in extremely sick but were responding well to treatment.
32 - Cats received one vaccine each, and
34 - Dogs received two vaccines each.
2 - Adopted dogs came in for heartworm treatment.
44 - Shelter animals were spayed or neutered.
Saturday, November 2 (continued)
• Samson the husky, pictured with Vet Tech Laila Benotmane, had his initial eye exam. When he came to us, Samson had already been diagnosed by a veterinary ophthalmologist as having a cataract in his right eye. The lens was becoming opaque but less than 15% of the lens was affected, so he could still see. His left eye, which was much worse, was causing a great deal of pain and had to be removed. Samson’s surgery was successful and he was soon able to go to a local husky rescue group for adoption.
Vet Techs Ty’Janae Goodin and Hannah Smith give a quick cuddle after checking puppies on a busy Saturday.
• While surgeries are taking place on one side of the clinic, veterinary staff checks animals who were recently surrendered so that they may be placed up for adoption. Vaccinations and medical exams are given, with Vet Techs watching for issues such as missing hair, runny eyes, and nasal discharge.
During this week (and the previous week as well) we hosted a veterinary extern from the University of Florida. She got to experience quite a variety of medical conditions and procedures during her time with the clinic staff!
We are extremely grateful to the caring and generous donors who supplied funding for our new laser machine. It is being used daily in our clinic and is making a real difference in the treatment and recovery of a great many animals in need.

Hi HSBC Friends,
Iadopted my incredible cat Lilo in August 2018. She went to college in Alabama with me and now we are back in Fort Lauderdale. She is such a queen that I had this portrait done of her that hangs in our new home. Lilo and Zion, my HSBC alumni dog, have brought so much joy to my life. Thank you for being there for the animals.
Alexa B.
After spending his entire life confined to a garage and backyard, eight-year-old Roger was surrendered when his family moved. Unsurprisingly, he tested positive for heartworm. After seeing a post on our social media and having her heartstrings pulled, a woman named Lexi in Fort Meyers drove over to adopt him. Lexi wrote us, “Sweet Roger is home for the holidays! He’s adjusting beautifully already. His new sister loves sitting on the lanai chairs to watch people walk by, and taught Roger how to sit with up there with her.”
Roger,
602,000 views on Instagram, 1.6 million on Facebook, 68,000 on YouTube, and 46,000 on TikTok.
Dear HSBC,
Sparkle, now named Whiskey, is at her forever home and adjusting so lovely. She is just the sweetest baby. We love her so much.
Nicole Newman
Hello,
My beautiful girl, adopted at your shelter on Jan 11, 2020, will turn 5 next week. She is my constant companion and my joy. Shortly after her adoption we moved back to my hometown of Staten Island, NY. Here she has a big fenced yard to run around and a buddy named Blizzard lives behind us. She is a great watchdog, wary of strangers but friendly when introduced. She’s an amazing dog. I could go on and on about her attributes! I am so lucky to have visited your shelter when she was there. I attached her most recent portrait. Her name is Abby.
Sincerely, Paul
Buonincontri

Athena, a Dolly’s Dream Dog, was featured on our social media and waited two months for her family. Eric, who lives in Grand Island, New York, saw her post and knew he wanted to claim her as his own. Eric’s mom drove from Alabama to pick up Athena, and Eric met them in Alabama to drive Athena home. She now has a lookalike brother named Gus Gus and has settled in beautifully.
Thanks to seeing Mako’s story on a social media post, his new dad Justin came from Columbus, Indiana to adopt him. He tells us, “Mako is loving his life with his siblings Sadie and Pete in Indiana. He is doing great and is such a joy to have around. He got to see snow for the first time, and we had a hard time getting him to come back in!”
Seven-year-old Timmy was transferred to HSBC from Broward County Animal Care where he wasn’t having any luck in getting adopted. With his sweet demeanor and soulful eyes, we knew that with a little extra attention, someone would fall in love. Timmy was selected by staff to be a Dolly’s Dream Dog, so his adoption fee was paid for and he would go home with lots of goodies from the Pet Boutique. Next, Jade Alexander with Hits 97.3 visited the shelter to help us create some videos to share on social media. Well, Jade’s enthusiastic profile for Timmy in her video helped him find his new mom! Amanda, who lives in Fort Lauderdale, saw the post on Instagram and now Timmy has his forever home.

Layla and her new mom, Martha
Layla was brought to us because her owner, who was homeless, wanted a better life for her. Martha Benton drove more than five hours to bring Layla home. She tells us, “Layla adjusted immediately to her new home. We love her so much.”
Layla’s story tallied 6.7 million views on Instagram, 290,000 on YouTube, and 316,000 on TikTok!
Marty arrived at the shelter as a stray and waited over six weeks to find a home. He would constantly carry toys in his mouth to the front of his kennel to get attention. After we posted on our social platforms, Marty racked up more than 26,000 shares on Facebook and 73,000 views on TikTok. Our followers even sent in toys especially for Marty. He was adopted soon after and, based on all the photos his family has shared, Marty still loves his toys! Deb and Michael Anderson of Margate tell us, “Thank you for this sweet boy! He is settling nicely. You all had so much love for him, and it shows. Keep in touch with him on Instagram @MightyMarty2024.”

Abby and Belle
A note from Keely:
“Ifell in love with Parker at first sight, and once we met him I knew he would be the perfect fit for our family. We had adopted Zoey from you in June and had been looking for her best friend. Parker is quiet, sweet, curious, cuddly and loves to eat, sleep and play with Zoey. I’m so happy to be part of your wonderful organization.”
Belle, 12, and foster fail Abby, who is five, were adopted by Norma and are living the good life. Laid-back Abby is always ready for a snuggle (if you’re standing!); Belle is skittish but just adores her mom.

NBC 6 broadcasted live several times during the day, CBS 4 did a piece a few days prior, WSVN Channel 7 visited on Friday to promote the event for Saturday, and ABC Local 10 had us for a promotional visit Friday morning. We are hugely grateful for the important support we get from our friends in the media; their coverage makes a difference in many furry lives!
Benny’s Buddies, a program created by #9 Sam Bennett (aka Benny) of the Florida Panthers and his fiancé Zoe, has been busy! For every goal scored this season by animal-loving Sam, Benny’s Buddies will pay the adoption fee for a pet. And our Sam Bennett really knows how to put the puck in the back of the net! Sam and (HSBC volunteer) Zoe had come to the shelter in September and adopted their puppy Billie. They knew they wanted to do something to help the shelter animals – and that’s how Benny’s Buddies was born.
Bronson’s a happy boy on his adoption day!
Binx, pictured with his new sister Kennedy, scored the perfect home with a family of diehard Panthers fans. The very first adoption of the Benny’s Buddies program, he had been transferred to the HSBC from Manatee County Animal Services when we were assisting to get animals out before Hurricane Milton hit the area.
Two-year-old Bronson came to us when we helped some shelters in the path of Hurricane Helene. His new dad will be bringing him back to the shelter for outpatient heartworm treatment, at no cost.

From food to litter, we’re proud to support the pets of the Humane Society of Broward County.

Featuring warm and fuzzy shelter stories
In mid-October we brought a four-month-old pup over from the county shelter who was in pitiful shape. Dubbed Benjamin Button, he had difficulty standing due to some muscle loss in his hind quarters. There were wounds on his nose, left shoulder and left rear leg, and he suffered from severe demodectic mange. Once our clinic staff treated the wounds, he was sent to a foster home for supportive care and topical mange treatment.
Benjamin thrived in his foster home, and as he grew healthier his personality blossomed. He became housebroken quickly, ate

year-old Lily Love was surrendered to us when her owner died and the nurse taking care of the owner had to move. Despite her age, Lily Love was a spry and lively little girl with a very big personality! After being featured as Pet of the Week on Local 10, her potential new mom Karen came to the shelter to meet her. Next, a dog meet was scheduled for Lily Love to become acquainted with Karen’s 10-year-old Chihuahua, Foxy. It was a great match, and Lily Love was on her way home to Hollywood.
well, was great with kids and was anxious to please. Once his hair grew back, he returned to the shelter where he was soon adopted by Machel, who read his story that was posted on a sign on his kennel. She fell in love and Benjamin Button went home the week before Thanksgiving.
A recent note from Mom read, “Benjamin is the sweetest dog and is the best thing that’s happened to my life. We have so much fun together; he is always making me laugh.”
