Summer 2024
News from the Humane Society of Broward County

From Your Board Chair

Chairman of the Board

Christy Gumberg and her dog Pumpkin

Ihope this letter finds you well and enjoying the start of summer. As the Chairman of the Board, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to all of you for your unwavering dedication, support and hard work to ensure the shelter’s success. Your efforts continue to make a significant impact on the lives of the animals in our care and the community we serve.

April was National Volunteer Appreciation Month and it was a pleasure for me to join HSBC staff at the Volunteer Appreciation party on April 13 at Tropical Acres Steakhouse, to recognize and celebrate our incredible volunteers. HSBC volunteers are the heart and soul of our shelter; from walking dogs and socializing cats to assisting with adoptions and participating in fundraising events, their contributions are invaluable. Such compassion, generosity and commitment ensure that every animal receives the love and care they deserve.

While we have many success stories to celebrate, we also face ongoing challenges, particularly in finding homes for our larger adult dogs. These animals often spend more time in the shelter waiting for the right family to come along. Despite their gentle nature and loving hearts, they are frequently overlooked in favor

On the Cover: Zorro, a foster failure, was adopted on 10/7/16 by Cherie and Don of Hollywood. Sadly, Zorro passed away at the end of June. He was a busy and beloved boy who was happiest when he was involved with everything that was going on. He loved his feline friends.

of younger, smaller pets. You can help these particular dogs by following the shelter’s various social media sites to share their stories and/or consider becoming a volunteer to work one-on-one with them until they find their forever home.

Funding for the shelter operations, programs, and services depends upon donations, money raised from special events, grant funding, and fee-for-service programs. HSBC’s largest fundraising event is the annual Walk for the Animals. The 2025 Walk will take place on February 1, once again at the Las Olas Intracoastal Promenade Park. It’s never too early to start your fundraising efforts for this fun event so go to walk4theanimals.com to register. I hope to see you there!

Together, we can change the narrative and give every dog and cat – regardless of age or size – the chance to find a forever home. Thank you for your continued support and dedication. With your help, we can make a difference, one paw at a time.

Warm regards,

Blessing of the Animals

Bring your companion animals and join us at the shelter on Sunday, October 6 at 3:00 p.m. for the annual Blessing of the Animals, held in recognition of the Feast of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals. Our friend Father Joe, of the Franciscan Friars of the Parish of Sts. Francis and Clare, will be giving individual blessings to all -- as he has for more than two decades!

The Blessing will take place in the Memorial Garden at the east end of the building. Please have dogs on leashes and all others in appropriate carriers.

Purina is the One

We are extremely grateful to have Purina as our shelter feeding partner for more than two decades. Their food contribution ensures that the animals in our care are fed a wellbalanced, high-quality and consistent diet. In addition, adopters are sent home with a bag of food for their new four-legged family member.

Help with Heating Things Up

Walk for the Animals 2025

Thanks to a $6,000 Veterinary Medical Equipment grant from Banfield Foundation, and another $6,000 donation from longtime friend and supporter Barbara Grevior, we were able to purchase two brand-new heated surgery tables for the clinic. These hydrauliclift stainless steel tables will provide patient safety and user convenience for years to come. Our surgery tables are used seven days a week for multiple daily surgeries, from spays and neuters to lifesaving procedures for injured or ill incoming animals.

Drone Cleaning Helps Us Shine

Drone roof-cleaning company Encompass donated their services in May and pressure cleaned the shelter roof! It was so interesting watching how the process worked. Our roof is now clean and sparkling, thanks to our friends at Encompass.

There are plenty of other service needs that we’d be grateful to have donated by local companies. These include cabinet repair/ rebuild, painting, parking lot line re-paint, and commercial-grade ceiling fans installed in each kennel. If your business is interested in donating, please contact Bob Ansell at 954.266.6833.

Our Walk Cover Dog for 2025 is Camie, an 11-and-a-half-year-old Great Dane who is a member of the Greenberg family. She’s asking you to save the date of Saturday, February 1, 2025 (changed from the date previously posted) for our biggest event of the year! Details to follow - visit walk4theanimals.com.

Award Recognition

Thank you to the readers of Fort Lauderdale Magazine for voting HSBC the 2024 Bronze Winner for the Best Place to Volunteer, and the Silver Winner for Best Animal Shelter/ Rescue! These accolades mean so much to us, and they help more animals find homes, too. If you have adopted from us or found joy in volunteering, please give us a shout out on Google or Yelp. Positive reviews make a difference for the animals!

Adoptions

Purina has a great app that can be found at purina.com, or by scanning the QR code shown. By using the myPurina app, you’ll earn points and get rewards from the Purina Perks catalog. You’ll also find personalized recommendations and expert tips.

Four-Paw Salute

Initiated in 2023, our Mutts & Meows for the Military program has seen 79 adoptions so far. Funding from sponsor Spirit Airlines covers the adoption fee for veterans adopting an animal six months of age or older, as well as providing items from our Pet Boutique. If you know of a veteran who’s interested in a new furry family member, encourage them to visit our shelter and inquire about Mutts & Meows.

We’re happy to report the following new homes found during March, April and May:

Sponsor a Classroom’s Pet Press

Have you heard about the animal newspaper for kids? It’s called Pet Press and it’s designed for kids 7 to 10 years of age. Pet Press is written about our homeless animal friends at the Humane Society and is full of fun and educational articles, stories, activities, and puzzles for kids.

Sponsoring your child’s classroom to receive Pet Press for the upcoming school year will ensure each child gets their own copy, allowing us to educate them about proper pet care and being kinder and more compassionate human beings. In addition to the newspaper, the teacher and principal will receive a letter informing them of your generosity. Pet Press will be mailed three times throughout the school year.

To send Pet Press to a specific classroom, visit our website at humanebroward.com under the Youth tab.

Camp Is a Win-Win at HSBC

One of the many wonderful things about our Camps is that adoptions happen as a result. A camper may take a special shine for a shelter animal while attending camp and enjoying the activities, and the rest, as they say, is history! One such happy tale is about Tina, an eight-year-old dog who came to us in December of last year from the Broward County facility. She was very overweight and had cancer in her leg. She needed the leg amputated but had to lose weight first so that her three legs could more easily support her. She stayed in foster care until the pounds came off, had her surgery in April at the shelter, then went back to the foster home to recover. When she returned to the shelter for adoption, she became hugely popular with the kids at summer camp. They made posters and banners to promote her; she needed to be the only pet in a home, and this made it more of a challenge to place her.

One young camper named Lizzy, whose grandfather had just beaten cancer, shared Tina’s story with her mom. Once Mom came in to meet Lizzy, she fell in love too and Tina had her happy ending.

Dear Ollie

Education Mascot Ollie is here to answer your animal-related questions. He’ll use his best doggy wisdom to address whatever you may throw his way – so don’t be shy! Write to him at the HSBC, ATTN: Education Department, or email him at ccrane@hsbroward.com.

Dear Ollie,

I know you were adopted from the Humane Society as a puppy. I want to adopt a puppy too, but my mom says it’s too much work. Is there some way I can convince her? I really want a puppy!

Your friend,

Max

Dear Max,

Yup, I was adopted as a puppy and it was the best darn day of my life. But I know I drove my mommy, Katie, nutso because she said so all the time! I think my real name is “Ollie No” because she said that A LOT! I would be chewing on her yummy shoes and she’d say, “Ollie No!” or I’d poop on her carpet that looked like soft grass and she’d say, “Ollie No!” or I’d wake up in the middle of the night to play and she’d say, “Ollie No!”. You get the picture. Anyways, the bottom line, Max, is that she said puppies are a lot of work so your mom could be right.

So, I have a brilliant idea. (I never had one of those before, but I do now because I’m a big boy.) Why not adopt a grownup dog? Think about it. There are loads of grownup dogs at the shelter who are there because their humans gave them up. Not because they aren’t great dogs but because either their humans got sick, or they moved without them or can’t afford to take care of them anymore. It’s not their fault; they are loving and sweet and fun. I’ve met a lot of them and they’ve become my friends. Oh my gosh, some of them know tricks, most of them go potty outside and a lot of them are already trained. I know one thing for darn sure - all the grownup doggies are SO thankful to the people who adopt them. They think they are heroes and so do I! So, be a hero and talk to your mom about adopting an adult doggy. Thanks for writing, Max, and good luck.

Your friend, Ollie

Just in time for Howloween, it’s our popular “Harry Pawter” event as the HSBC shelter transforms into a Hogwarts wonderland. Come out for the fun on Friday, October 18 from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. and experience the magic for yourself! Kids can trick-or-treat throughout the shelter, play with puppies, choose a magic wand, play games for prizes, enter the forbidden forest, and enjoy butter beer and treats from the Sugar Plum Treat Shop. More info, and sales of the all-inclusive event bracelets, will be available starting in mid-September at humanebroward.com.

Plant Sale Success

Ajoint effort by the Friends of Animals Club and the Teen Club in May, the annual Plant Sale offered an impressive selection of beautiful plants for purchase. Many were generously donated by local nurseries including Tropic Plants, Flamingo Road Nursery, Mickey’s Orchards, Living Color, Green Wholesale Center, and The Home Depot at the Tower Shops in Davie. Volunteers and club members also donated plants. There were gently used items for sale, as well as pottery, tote bags and food. The teens were kept busy selling hot dogs, chips and beverages, and helping people to their cars with their plants. The two clubs raised more than $3,000 for the animals!

Plant Sale customers found plenty of green to bring home!

Therapy Program Highlight: Wags

Therapeutic cuddles are Sadie’s specialty.

With final exams (and stress!) approaching, several therapy teams visited Nova Southeastern University’s Health Professions Division Library to help students decompress. We aren’t sure who enjoyed it more – the students, or Blue, Daisy, and Sadie!

It was a puppy surprise! For National Therapy Animal Day on April 30, several teams popped in for a visit with the staff at All American Facilities. Employees were all smiles when they met Blue, Gingie, and Sadie. These delightful dogs made the day brighter and took away a layer of stress for every employee they visited.

Our AAT Program has a wonderful and longstanding relationship with Catholic Hospice, and recently we were invited to partake in the second annual Camp Erin Family Camp. Camp Erin is a fantastic program that supports children, teens, and families grieving the death of a loved one. We are honored to be included in this important step in healing for these families.

S& Tales

At Cooper City’s annual Autism Awareness event in April, two of our canine volunteers -- Animal Assisted Therapy Dog, Lola, and her brother Chewy, an Education Dog -- brought smiles to both children and adults that came by for a visit.

This camper enjoys puppy kisses, courtesy of Bingo the Animal Assisted Therapy Dog.

Therapy Team Highlight: Sue and Buddy

ue and her golden retriever, Junior, joined the HSBC Animal Assisted Therapy Program in August of 2012, making frequent visits to The Peninsula Assisted Living and Memory care. Just three years later, Junior passed away. Soon, Sue met and adopted JR, also a golden, who took to therapy work almost immediately. JR and Sue began weekly visits to visit patients and staff at Broward Health Imperial Point Hospital; they also went to SuperSchool in Plantation to work with students with disabilities during their occupational therapy sessions. Never too busy to take on more, Sue adopted Buddy in 2019 (yes, another golden!) and utilized JR’s experience as a therapy dog to help train her new boy. He eventually became certified as an Education Dog, and Sue began work in both our AAT and Education programs. Buddy has followed in JR’s footsteps, visiting Broward Health Imperial Point and SuperSchool. When JR crossed the rainbow bridge, Sue adopted a Labrador mix named Ricky. Like his brother JR, Buddy was helpful in training the next in line to become a certified Education Dog. For well over a decade, Sue and all four of her boys have been important assets to the shelter and the community, in both Animal Assisted Therapy and Education.

TB & Training and Behavior

Noise Phobias in Dogs the

We’re all aware of the fear that can overtake a dog during a thunderstorm, or on the 4th of July when fireworks go off. Perhaps your own pup suffers from intense fear of loud noises; it’s very common.

Determining the level of sensitivity or fear response will help you to develop a behavior modification plan to ease that anxiety. Some dogs may just tremble a little and try to stay close to you while experiencing fear, while others experience a truly phobic reaction, becoming destructive in their environment and trying to escape. It is important to find the trigger for your dog’s fear.

Triggers and Behaviors

Common triggers:

• Thunderstorms (Brontophobia)

• Fireworks

• Fire trucks / Motorcycles / Airplanes

• Vacuum cleaners

• Sudden unexpected loud noises

Common fearful behaviors:

• Hiding

• Shaking

• Avoidance behaviors (running away)

• Defensive aggression (growling, barking, lunging)

• Fearful body postures – submissive

• Destructive behaviors

• Vocalization

• Uncontrolled urination or defecation

• Drooling or panting

• Pacing

• Shedding

Managing Your Environment

Limiting exposure to the stimulus, or anticipating the onset of anxiety and distracting or redirecting your pet, can be helpful in resolving minor issues.

• Plan an active day for your pet with plenty of exercise to tire him out.

• Create a safe place (they may have already chosen one they prefer) with a soft bed and favorite toys.

• Oral herbal calming remedies to take the edge off may help in mild cases. DAP (dog appeasing pheromone) plugins and sprays can also be effective.

• Massage or using Tellington Touch techniques will reassure and calm some pets.

• During the actual event, distract your dog with a favorite game he enjoys, and a food treat.

Reducing Anxiety and Building Confidence

The goal of behavior modification is to change the way your pet feels about the things he is most afraid of. It is very important to proceed at a gradual pace; never force your pet into an interaction with a frightening stimulus, and always start from his level of tolerance.

Using the example of a thunderstorm phobia:

• Purchase or make your own recording of a thunderstorm.

• In your first session, play the recording at a very low volume so that a fear response is not elicited. Play your dog’s favorite game and feed him special treats. Give positive attention to create a good association with the background noise.

• Next session, gradually increase the volume while providing the positive reinforcement. If you notice any fearful response, you have gone beyond your dog’s threshold of tolerance. Stop and take a break, reduce the volume and continue at a slower pace.

• Gradually increase the volume over a period of weeks or months.

• This type of training requires short, frequent sessions and plenty of patience.

Avoiding the Pitfalls

Never punish your dog or puppy for having a fearful response. Using punishment will only cause your pet to be more frightened and will complicate the training process.

Tips and Hints

• Gradually increase the volume over a period of weeks or months.

• Never force your pet to interact with something he is afraid of.

• Provide a safe place, such as a spare bedroom, where his feeding and sleeping areas can be isolated from the rest of the house.

• Avoid any new stimulus if your dog is already fearful and keep his routine as normal as possible.

• Always check with your vet to make sure the behavior problem is not related to a medical condition.

• Exercise can help to reduce stress. Find an activity your dog enjoys.

• Patience, patience, patience.

Clinic Corner

Fix it Friday was a Real Team Effort

In March and in May we hosted two “Fix it Fridays,” sterilizing nearly 200 owned cats at a reduced price. It was quite the undertaking, with five admission staff who started signing in patients at 6:00 a.m. Appointments had cats arriving 20 per hour, with 14 clinic staff, three veterinarians, many animal care personnel and even our own retired vet Dr. Isabel Vivies volunteering her services. Felines had to be 10 weeks of age or older. They received a free rabies vaccine as needed. We have also reintroduced our regular spay/neuter program for owned pets, suspended during the COVID pandemic, and the demand has been overwhelming. Dog appointments are fully booked up more than two months out, and owned cats the same.

We do tend to have a few appointments for TNR – trap, neuter & release cats. Check our website at humanebroward.com to see when the next big Fix it Friday will be. There is also a listing of other lower-priced organizations that may be able to assist if you cannot schedule with us.

Use the envelope included in this newsletter to help support our spay/neuter efforts.

Vet Tech Kenny Zayas carries a sedated cat to surgery while Dr. Blanco performs a spay and Assistant Clinic Manager Karitza Ortiz prepares medication.

Animal Care’s Genevieve Changtu comforts a feline.

Spay/neuter has become an increasingly unaffordable surgery for many people, with average quotes of $500 to $800. Part of the challenge is that there are only 32 vet schools in the country, and only a handful have programs geared toward shelter medicine. We did the Fix it Fridays surgeries for less than $100 per feline, which is made possible solely because of our supporters’ donations. Thank you for making a difference in the overpopulation crisis! Annual Big Dog Tournament Tees Off

Fort Lauderdale Country Club was the location on April 8 for the Big Dog Men’s Invitational Golf Tournament, presented by BrightView. Stellar weather helped make for a fantastic day, and tournament Co-Chairs Cherie Marshall, Josh Renick, and David Vivies report that nearly $60,000 was raised for the HSBC’s programs and services.

Throughout the day, participants sampled custom cocktail creations and brews from American Social, Batch Southern Kitchen, El Bar Miami, Palm Room, Sip Java Café, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, YOT, and Yeasty Brews. DiSalvo’s Restaurant provided lunch for the players to enjoy before the tournament, while volunteers had a delicious lunch donated by Jimmy John’s.

On-course contests included a Putting Contest, March Madnessthemed Chipping Contest, Paw the Dice, Closest to the Line sponsored by Austin & Christine Forman, Closest to the Pin (1936) sponsored by Brinkley Morgan, and Closest to the Pin (0-18) sponsored by Conrad & Scherer. Players also had the chance to win a variety of prizes at each par 3 hole from Hole in One sponsors including Club Car, Hollywood Chrysler Jeep, Maserati of Fort Lauderdale, and RealAuction.com.

Following the competition, Honorary Chairs Wil Shriner and Dave LaMont kicked off the awards ceremony by thanking our generous sponsors who make this tournament possible: Presenting Sponsor Brightview; Team Sponsors TRUIST Wealth, Boatyard, Compass Realty, Drew James Salons, Hargrave Custom Yachts, Katz Barron, John & Cherie Marshall, Maus Consulting Group of Raymond James, and Ali & Melody Saleh; Event Sponsors Big 105.9, Hollywood Chrysler Jeep (Trophy Sponsor), Downtown Photo (Photography Sponsor), Romie and Luna Wellner (Snack Sponsor); and Shelter Partners Purina and VCA Animal Hospitals.

Barbie Theme Gets Fashion Show PAWtying

With the theme “Come on Barbie, Let’s Go PAWty,” The Angel PAWS Luncheon and Fashion Show at Coral Ridge Country Club on March 11 was the place to be! Chairpersons Danielle Gaudreau, Margaret Meldeau and Stacy Sager reported a record-breaking $170,000-plus raised for the HSBC.

Arriving PAWtiers were greeted by Barbie and Ken, who welcomed them for a delightful afternoon of fashion fun. The always-anticipated silent auction of “previously loved” items featured designer handbags, shoes, jewelry, accessories and more. Guests also had the opportunity to purchase keys and try their luck at opening display cases containing fabulous prizes. Eight ladies were successful with their attempts! There was also a prize drawing with tickets for purchase; the grand prize, donated by Christine and Austin Forman, was a spectacular Broward Center for the Performing Arts package. Lisa Gothier was the happy winner.

The Pretty Nomad, located in Fort Lauderdale, provided an array of beautiful ensembles for the fashion show, which were modeled by PAWS members who thoroughly enjoyed this new twist to the event! Following in the Angel PAWS tradition, Jacey Birch of Local 10 emcee’d the show and adoptable puppies made their runway debuts with the models in the show.

TLotus Blossom Ball Celebrates Unprecedented Success

he PAWS Lotus Blossom Ball, presented by Rita & Rick Case Automotive Group, was a sold-out success in April at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa. The annual gala raised a record-breaking $340,000, according to event Chairs Sheryl Maher and Alyse Lemstrom. Thai dancers greeted guests upon entering the beautiful cocktail space adorned in authentic Asian décor. Guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres featuring dim sum and sushi, Tito’s Handmade Vodka specialty drinks, and a sake and Asian beer station. The silent auction was another highlight, raising an astonishing amount. Prize drawing tickets were available; Anna White won a stunning one-of-a-kind diamond paw necklace, courtesy of J.R. Dunn Jewelers, and Frank Sammarino won a seven-night stay on Paradise Island, Bahamas, donated by Melissa and Larry Rocker.

Moving into the gorgeous ballroom, attendees were treated to a spectacular opening performance by Helene Lundstrom, voice of Disney’s Pocahontas, and accompanying dancers. A live auction and a Give from the Heart fundraiser followed.

Additional surprises included performances by John Minnis with his well-known “Diamond Girl” song, Tommy Mitchell of Blood Sweat and Tears playing some legendary hits, and a video clip of Wayne Nelson of Little River Band congratulating PAWS. Happily, a bulldog named Tiramisu shone in the spotlight and found her forever home! This highlight was followed by dancing and a fabulous evening that nobody wanted to end.

Salute to Our Beloved Volunteers

With an 80’s theme that had our volunteers (and hosting staff!) decked out in iconic attire from four decades ago, our Volunteer Appreciation Party turned Tropical Acres Steakhouse into a retro-lover’s paradise. From boom boxes and cassette tapes to Cabbage Patch Kids and a vintage PACMAN game, the décor really brought back the unique 1980’s vibe! Volunteers enjoyed video reels of nostalgic TV commercials and movie clips, 80’s music, Rubik’s cube-solving, and the highlight of the entertainment - a musical bingo game. There was also a delicious brunch that included a sundae bar, with MOJO

donuts as an added treat. All guests were entered in a drawing to win Spirit Airlines tickets, with the lucky winner being Saula Moquette.

Each year we celebrate our amazing volunteers during Volunteer Appreciation Month in April, honoring the invaluable contributions of the more than 600 volunteers who give of their time, skills and hearts across every department within the shelter. Their participation is critical to the success of the HSBC; we are enormously grateful for our incredible volunteers!

When he first came to us, Obi was diagnosed with a severe case of heartworm. Because of his small size, the severity of the condition and the detection of a heart murmur, Obi went to a specialist in animal cardiology where the larger worms were surgically removed. He then underwent heartworm treatment at the shelter to eliminate the smaller worms that remained. Obi was later adopted by Don and Debby, through the Spirit Mutts & Meows Military Program. The grant from this program covers the adoption fee and supplies for a military veteran’s pet adoption.

Below is an excerpt from a letter Don and Debby sent out to their friends. Obi and his parents collected $1,250 for the shelter as a result.

Agroup of close friends, years ago, decided that none of us really needed one more thing for their birthday… Today’s collection is for the Humane Society of Broward County. The staff showed so much care and kindness during Obi’s adoption process and follow-up treatment that we are donating in his honor. As he came with a Star Wars name, Obi, and today is May 4, “May the Fourth be with you,” this is now his birthday, and this is his first fundraiser.

Sincerely,

The “Gang”

AObi with his parents, Don and Debby

severely matted stray Shih-tzu mix who we named Elton came to us in April. His hair was so overgrown and matted that his eyes were completely buried. It wasn’t until we’d carefully shaved him down that we realized he was blind, and also lacked tear production.

Without the necessary lubrication provided by tears, the eyes dry out and can be very painful. Elton needed daily eye drops but he was anxious about that, becoming stressed and snapping at staff each time. Since this need would be ongoing for the rest of his life, the decision was made to remove the eyes. The surgery went well and after just a few days of healing, Elton was available for adoption. He was taken to Local 10 and featured on their Saturday news segment, as well as having posts on all our social media platforms.

Amanda, an esthetician who lives in Miami, saw Elton’s story on Instagram, came in to meet him, and was able to take him home the same day. She changed his name to Charlie and, as an esthetician will, came up with a healing plan for his damaged skin and coat. In between special shampoos and red-

THi,

I’ve worked at the HSBC for several years as an Animal Care Supervisor. Recently I convinced my husband that we should foster a kitten. My shortterm foster has now become a permanent member of our family and we love him. Panda is settling in and our dogs love this little munchkin too. We always need fosters at the shelter… learn more at humanebroward. com and you too can join the foster failure club…just like me.

en years ago, Cindy Greninger’s dog Cleo was featured in Paw Prints after Cindy had held a Bark Mitzvah-turned-fundraiser for the shelter. And now, a decade later, Cindy and her dog Mojo have done the same. Everyone attending the festivities was asked to bring a donation; Mojo and Cindy collected toys, food, towels, blankets, and $600. That’s quite the mitzvah accomplishment!

light therapy, Charlie loves car rides, hanging out with his dog brothers, eating treats, and snuggling with his new mom.

Happy and comfortable, Charlie has settled in nicely at his new home.

When he first came to the shelter, Charlie (a.k.a. Elton) was in very sad condition.

Mojo

Marley came to us in mid-March – all 91 pounds of him! A mature fellow, Marley was an affectionate, gentle, happy boy who had everything going for him, except for his size and age. A post on social media drew lots of attention, and a family in Virginia took note. Dad/husband Ranjay was soon traveling to India on business with a stop in Houston, so he detoured to Fort Lauderdale to meet Marley in person. That sealed the deal, but then Ranjay had to catch his international flight. Coincidentally, our Director of Volunteer Services was driving to North Carolina and offered transport. Marley’s new family met up with Linda and Marley there, then drove him home to Virginia where he is now a very happy boy, living the dream with his beloved human and canine family members. He even gets to facetime with Dad when business calls for extensive travel. They love Marley SO much!

JMarley, pictured center, with his wonderful new family at home in Virginia!

Five-year-old Ellie was getting overlooked at the shelter due to her shyness when someone would ask to meet her. When we featured her on social media, a woman named Ellie took notice and wanted to give her a home…in Marietta, Georgia. As luck would have it, one of our staff was heading to Alabama and was able to bring Ellie along, saving her new family the much longer drive to South Florida. Ellie-Mom reports that Ellie-Cat is doing great and has settled in just purrfectly.

HSBC’s Tiffany Lucero transported Ellie to Alabama.

Dear HSBC,

Ellie’s new mom and dad drove to Alabama to pick up their girl.

TJack and Nova

eanette’s son and his wife adopted their dog Nova from us in May, and just a few days later Jeanette and her husband came in to meet Jack. They took him home the very same day. The two dogs get along beautifully and enjoy spending time together. Jeanette tells us that Jack “is very spoiled…he was the missing piece in our family.” Being a Dolly’s Dream Dog, not only was Jack’s adoption fee sponsored by the Dolly’s Dream Dog foundation, but so are his behavior training sessions at the HSBC. (With eight grandchildren who spend lots of time with them, Jack’s mom and dad want to be sure he’s on his best behavior.)

Dear HSBC,

This is Katie, adopted two years ago. She is very sweet, very spoiled, and a wonderful friend.

Thank you, Tony

eaching Veterinary Assisting for the past 8 years at my old school, I always promoted the Adopt Don’t Shop mentality with my students and tried to get them to see how different animals are in the shelters vs. when they get into a loving environment in a home. I explain that it may take time, which we thought it would when we first adopted Doug, but OMG...within 5 minutes of being in the house he was a completely different dog.

This picture was taken 20 minutes into him being here and he has already rolled over showing active submission to my daughter and other dog. It’s been such a wonderful experience. We are through the roof happy with how things are going with Doug! True adoption story!

Featuring warm and fuzzy shelter stories

Freeing Captain Hook

Avery small, sweet one-year-old cat, weighing just over seven pounds, arrived at the shelter as a stray in April. He had somehow become severely entangled in a large fishing lure that had three hooks on each side; those hooks had dug into not only his fur, but both hind legs too. The surgery to remove the fishing gear required some help from our maintenance department in the form of a loan of wire cutters. Some of the barbs had pierced the skin and other hooks were fully embedded, causing inflammation and, obviously, quite a lot of pain.

Just one day after surgery, “Captain Hook” was walking and eating. After a few days of medical care and observation, he was placed up for adoption and was immediately claimed by a loving family. New mom Kayla of Tamarac tells us that they’ve re-named him Scar and he is settling in, is “perfect,” and has been enjoying the company of their dog.

Taken during surgery, this photo clearly shows the entanglement of the fishing lure.

A Cure for Blizzard

Healthy and happy in his new home, this lucky boy has really come a long way.

SDonate Today

ix-month-old Blizzard was surrendered to us when his person had nowhere to live. He was sick with canine parvovirus, which is highly contagious and often fatal. Puppies are at greatest risk for contracting parvo between six weeks to six months of age and should receive their vaccinations for the disease at six, eight, and 12 weeks, with a further booster a few weeks later.

Thanks to donor support, we had on hand a lifesaving brand-new drug called Elanco, a monoclonal antibody treatment. (Just three vials cost $1,200, and it took half of our supply to treat Blizzard.) The drug worked its magic, and in one week Blizzard tested negative for the virus. He recovered fully with no ill effects and was soon available for adoption. Now named Shiloh and with a new mom named Tracey, he now resides in Homestead alongside beloved big brother Yoda.

We are only able to help animals like Captain Hook and Blizzard because of your support! Our average donation is $31, and we are thankful for any amount. Visit humanebroward.com, scan the QR code here, or use the envelope included in this newsletter to make a difference in an animal’s life.

Beautiful Captain Hook recovered quickly from his traumatic experience.
Shiloh loves his brother Yoda!
