From Your Board Chair

Dear

HSBC Supporters,

As summer settles in and we enter the height of hurricane season, we want to remind you that now is the time to ensure your pets are microchipped, with current information on file with the microchip company and have up-to-date vaccines. Hurricane preparedness is critical not just for people but for our four-legged family members as well. We encourage all pet owners to include their animals in their emergency plans. On our website, you’ll find helpful tips and resources to ensure you and your pet are ready for any storm that may come our way.

In April we took time to celebrate those who make our work possible: our incredible volunteers. Our annual Volunteer Appreciation Party was a wonderful evening of gratitude, camaraderie and reflection on the many lives changed through their dedication. From walking dogs and socializing cats to supporting events and serving on the Board of Directors, volunteers are truly the heartbeat of our organization.

On the Cover: Adorable Maine Coon Ivy Quinn was adopted by the LaPorte family. She has lots of energy and purrs so loudly, she vibrates! Ivy Quinn loves toys that make noise and playing with the tails of her doggie siblings. She came to us with her littermates in May; all were quickly adopted.

That said, we are in critical need of additional volunteers, especially for our foster care program. Every year, kittens, puppies, and animals with medical needs depend on the loving temporary homes provided by fosters. If you’ve ever considered fostering, now is the perfect time to join this lifesaving effort. We provide all the supplies and guidance; you supply the love and a safe space.

We are thrilled to celebrate the entire Florida Panthers organization for their second consecutive Stanley Cup win and Sam Bennett for being awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP! Congratulations to Sam and the entire team. Read more about Sam’s Benny’s Buddies adoption program on pages 8 and 9.

Thank you for being a part of our community. Your compassion and support continue to inspire us, and we look forward to the difference we can make together in the season ahead.

Shelter Pawtraits

New York-based photographer Mike Ruiz is acclaimed for his high-impact, surreal brand of celebrity and fashion photography. He also enjoys visiting animal shelters where he captures stunning images to share with his followers on Instagram, and has named this endeavor Shelter Pawtraits. He and Grammy Award-winning producer and DJ Tracy Young came to HSBC in May to photograph some of our long-term dog residents. Of the six dogs who posed for the camera, all but one were adopted right away!

Our 2026 Walk Cover Dog

Introducing Bobby, a three-year-old Lab/Pit mix who is the quintessential bundle of love – and our 2026 Walk for the Animals Cover Dog.

Show Some Love

Show your HSBC support when you’re out and about in our baseball caps and new sun shirts, available in the shelter’s Pet Boutique. The shirts come in three colors, with long-sleeved at $36 and short-sleeved at $33. Hats are $15.

Bobby was an HSBC Dolly’s Dream Dog and is also what we lovingly call a “foster fail,” which means his foster family fell so headover-heels for him, they couldn’t let him go -- and adopted him themselves.

Bobby had been transferred from another shelter to receive heartworm treatment with us. He made a full recovery and is a healthy, happy boy. He adores playing with other dogs, cuddling with his people, and doling out kisses like it’s his job. Sweet, playful, and always full of affection, Bobby is proof that second chances make the best stories.

Bobby says, “Mark your calendars for February 21, 2026, and the HSBC’s biggest fundraiser of the year!” Learn more about it at walk4theanimals.com.

Motorcycle Ride Raises Funds

The first-time Run for the Paws took place in May, with kickstands up at St. Pats Irish Pub in Deerfield Beach, and finishing at the shelter for a visit with the animals. 100 percent of entry fees and donated items went to the HSBC. Organized by Dmitry Molchanov of Club MC Bratva Palm Beach, the inaugural event was a real success, with more than 30 riders joining in and $750 raised. Plans are in the works for another Run for the Paws in 2026.

Paw Pathway Commemorative Bricks

Pay tribute to a loved one while supporting the HSBC! For a $300 donation, a brick with your message will be placed in the pathway of our Reflection Garden. To order, call 954.266.6818.

Blessing of the Animals

For more than two decades, HSBC has been welcoming Father Joe from the Franciscan Friars of the Parish of Sts. Francis and Clare to bless the public’s companion animals for the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. We invite you to bring your companion animals on Sunday, October 5 at 3:00 p.m. for a blessing, which will take place in the Memorial Garden at the east end of the property. Please have dogs on leashes and all others in appropriate carriers.

We’re happy to report the following new homes found during March, April, and May:

Mike Ruiz and Tracy Young with seven-year-old Earle

Animal Art

Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School has been a shelter partner for years, and one of our favorite MSD programs is with Ms. Lombard’s art class. Her students choose an adoptable animal and draw a portrait of their subject, which is displayed on the animal’s cage or kennel run and later serves as a gift to the family upon adoption. Their works of art are always so beautiful and evocative!

Last year Ms. Lombard’s class also competed in designing our summer camp T-shirt. The students’ talent always amazes us.

Howl-oween With Us in October!

Our annual celebration of Howloween will have visiting ghosts and goblins a-tremble in delight! Rooms at the shelter will be decorated with a variety of fun, spooky themes, staff and volunteers will be in costume, and all sorts of festivities will await.

Tricks and treats are more fun with the shelter animals at the HSBC!

TNSU’s Got Drive

he Pets Fighting Stress Club at Nova Southeastern University School held a donation drive in the spring, dropping off more than $5,000 worth of supplies! Kudos to club members and all those who supported their efforts.

You can check them out on Instagram: @uschoolpets_fightingstress.

From Volunteer to Vet School

Matthew Newman has a history with HSBC and the animals. When he neared his 13th birthday nearly a decade ago, Matthew participated in our Mitzvah Mutts program. He was a natural with the dogs and could always get a shy pup to come out of its shell; this earned him the nickname “Dog Whisperer.” After being a Teen Club member for the next four years, Matthew went on to attend Virginia Tech and was recently accepted into Veterinary School at the University of Florida! Our Dog Whisperer has wanted to be a veterinarian for as long as he can remember and says his time at the shelter only amplified that desire. We are very proud of Matthew and excited for what his future holds.

Therapy Program Highlight: AmbassaDogs at FLL

For those who suffer with anxiety when flying -and even for those who don’t, but who find the whole travel experience tedious or nerve wracking -- the airport can be a very stressful place. To help relieve this stress, Fort Lauderdale International Airport recently introduced the AmbassaDog Program, which brings in trained therapy dogs to comfort and calm stressed travelers. These friendly pups roam the terminals, giving waiting passengers the opportunity for a cuddle and a smile.

We currently have two teams -- Lise and Bingo, and Morgan and Krewe -- giving travelers the boost that only a wag and a cold, wet nose can give. Keep an eye out for our AmbassaDogs the next time you fly!

Bingo gets a hug from a passenger.

IOur teams of Lise and Bingo, and Morgan and Krewe, ready to hit the terminals and make some new friends.

Therapy Team Highlight: Linda & Louie

In December 2022 Linda and her friendly, outgoing dog Louie joined our Animal Assisted Therapy Program, and we feel so fortunate to have them! Linda and Louie are welcomed regularly at various senior facilities; they also deliver plenty of smiles at our youth events. If you take Louie’s love for people of all ages, and add Linda’s passion for helping others, you have the ideal pet therapy team!

Memory Mews Program Benefits Seniors

t is estimated that about 10 percent of people aged 65 and older in the U.S. are living with dementia. Locally, our Memory Mews program has been providing dementia patients with the opportunity to experience the healing power of the human-animal bond through interactions with shelter cats. We have recently expanded the program to include other seniors who would benefit from this connection.

John, pictured here, is a gentleman whose recent session gave him joy and touched our hearts as well. Volunteer Carey Morgan, who co-chairs the Walk for the Animals, is a neighbor of John’s. The two have become friendly and Carey, knowing John loves animals, thought he would benefit from a Memory Mews session. John is blind and cannot have a companion animal at home, but his love for them is strong! When Carey brought John to the shelter and walked him into the cat room, she described it in great detail so that he could have a picture in his mind. During his interaction with the kittens, John had a smile on his face that communicated sheer happiness. The kittens’ presence, and their attention while in John’s lap and rolling about at this feet, gave him a delightful experience – and touched those of us watching.

You can learn more about Memory Mews, and book your own session, at humanebroward.com under the Community tab.

Lise and Bingo, making passengers smile at FLL. Krewe knows the assignment!

Common Ocular Diseases

As shelter medicine has evolved over the years, we have been able to adopt out animals with medical conditions more frequently. One of the most common conditions we treat is ocular disease; many eye-related diseases can be managed with surgical correction or daily topical medications, and the animal will go on to live a normal life. We most often see Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca (Dry Eye), Nictitans Gland Prolapse (Cherry Eye), and Entropion.

Dry Eye:

Dry eye occurs when there is a decrease in tear production, making the cornea dull and irritated. The cause is usually autoimmune-related and is over-represented in breeds such as the Shih Tzu, Bulldogs, and Pugs. Over time, the affected eyes will become irritated and inflamed, leading to a thick green discharge. (It can be confused with a bacterial infection because of the appearance of the discharge.) We diagnose dry eye on intake of animals using a test that measures tear production. If they have low tear production, we start treatment with topical medications. The animal will need to be on this medication for their lifetime. If untreated, this condition is painful and could progress to a corneal ulcer and, potentially, loss of vision.

Cherry Eye:

There are multiple glands within the eye that are responsible for proper tear production; one of them is tucked in behind the animal’s third eyelid. This gland can at times flip out from behind the eyelid and cause irritation and poor tear production. The “cherry eye” can happen in any breed and at any age, but most often happens in brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds like French Bulldogs and Pugs because of the shallow shape of their skulls. Thankfully, there is a surgical repair to tuck the gland back into its normal position and restore tear

production. If left unrepaired, the prolapsed gland and the surrounding eye can become inflamed, develop dry eye, and become more challenging to repair. After surgical correction and healing, the animal will go on to live a normal life with no medications needed.

Entropion:

Entropion is a condition where the eyelid margin rolls inward so that the eyelashes rub on the cornea. This is most common in wrinkle-faced breeds such as Shar Pei and Chow Chows but can occur in any animal. The irritation from the eyelashes contacting the eye is very uncomfortable and can lead to damage to the cornea, as well as inflammation. Animals suffering from entropion often squint their eyes and have discharge and tear overflow. Like cherry eye, there is a surgical correction for this condition. The procedure is simple, with a small incision being made around the affected eyelids to remove excess tissue. Once the incision is closed, the eyelid margin is adjusted to position the eyelashes correctly. After healing, there will be no further medications needed.

These conditions are more commonly seen in dogs but can also be diagnosed in cats. Most often, the breeds affected have flatter faces with less-traditional skull anatomy like Persians, Munchkins, and British Shorthairs.

When getting any new animal, it’s important to know that every breed has unique health concerns, and to educate yourself before committing to their lifelong care. While brachycephalic breeds are growing more popular and have wonderful personalities, they come with more extensive health care than others, such as respiratory concerns, skin conditions, and sensitive ocular structures.

Benny’s Buddies for the Win!

Our summer camp kids were beyond thrilled when Sam interrupted their kennel cleaning to say hello!

“It’s such a rewarding feeling” were Sam Bennett’s words when his Benny’s Buddies program launched one year ago. Every time the Florida Panthers forward scores a goal, he covers the adoption fee of an animal at the HSBC. The program has gained national attention, recognizing the benevolent nature of this formidable hockey player.

Sam grew up with a love for animals, and the idea for the program stems from a connection with the HSBC that began last year. Sam’s fiancée Zoe had been working as a shelter volunteer, and when the couple adopted their puppy Billie in the fall, their desire to do more grew into a program that would spread awareness and promote adoptions. (Sam and Zoe also have a rescue cat named Gracie.) Since then, Sam’s 25 regular-season and 15 playoff goals helped take the Panthers to incredible back-to-back Stanley Cup victories, earning him the MVP award and securing Benny’s Buddies adoptions for 41 shelter animals. (Sam also scored a goal in the 4 Nations Face-Off.)

Just days after the Championship win, Sam and Zoe brought the Conn Smythe Trophy

“B

ronson, now Mac, has been the most amazing addition to the family. He’s enjoyed a couple adventures between adoption and heartworm treatment, but he has many more planned for the future! Finally getting to live life as a happy dog!”

to the shelter, where one kitten tried to claim it for his own. The following week, the couple returned for interviews with local media and to visit with shelter animals, staff, and summer campers.

We are tremendously grateful to Sam and Zoe, and so excited to see what next season brings for their Benny’s Buddies program! Follow along on Instagram @bennysbuddies9.

Shelter dog Peanut got the chance to show off his toy to Sam and Zoe.

Coco, now named Sam after their favorite hockey player, was adopted by Leslie and Arthur of Fort Lauderdale. When she saw the handsome kitty on social media, Leslie knew their home was to be his home.

SOweet and shy, Hazy was surrendered when her owner lost their home. She adored her toys, but was incredibly shy when staff would take her out for some exercise and attention. Adopted as a Benny’s Buddy, Hazy has settled in well at her new home in Royal Palm Beach.

Hazy was selected to be highlighted in the Stanley Pup show, broadcast on TruTV leading into Game 2 of the Stanley Cup final on June 6. She’s a star in more ways than one!

ur scruffy boy Mr. Whiskers has Facebook to thank for his new family. Doris and Bob, who live in Coral Springs, saw a post that a friend shared and they decided to meet the pup. We did not know much about his past as the eight-year-old boy had come from another shelter, but we could tell he was sad and missing his family. He was with us for two weeks, seeming aloof when meeting new people though our staff knew he just needed some time to open up.

SUpon adoption, Doris and Bob learned he was a Benny’s Buddy and that Sam Bennett had paid the adoption fee. And when Cherie, HSBC VP of Marketing, asked if Bob was a hockey fan his face lit up! It turns out 84-yearold Bob plays goalie in a senior hockey league and has played the sport for 70 years. Mr. Whiskers has been re-named Benji and Doris says, “Adopting him was the best thing ever. He settled in perfectly and has claimed the loveseat as his! We all have definitely bonded.”

In December of last year, Jazzy was a transfer from Broward County Animal Care (a separate organization that we assist when we can). She’d been with them for six months. We made her a Benny’s Buddies dog in February. Her new mom Susan says, “Jazzy is doing awesome. She loves her sunbaths and toys -- and cheering for the Florida Panthers!” Recently Jazzy noticed another Benny’s Buddies dog on TV when Tank visited Local 10 as our Pet of the Week. She whined, wagged her tail, and watched from start to end! Such a smart girl. Scan the QR code to see for yourself.

even-year-old Earle arrived in January as a transfer from Broward County Animal Care where he’d been brought as a stray. He was not in the best condition, and tested heartworm positive too. In March, when Earle was having no luck with getting adopted, he was selected to be a Benny’s Buddy. Still, though, he sat and waited, and rarely did anyone ask to meet him. On day 115, a wonderful family from Miami came in just before closing; they wanted to adopt our oldest dog. And yes, that was Earle! He finally got his very own loving family and has settled in at home beautifully.

Albus, seven years old, waited almost two months before he was adopted as a Benny’s Buddy.

Stylish Soirée Supports the Animals

The Angel PAWS Luncheon & Fashion Event: PAWSport to Paris transported guests to the City of Light at the Coral Ridge Country Club in March. Co-chaired by Marci Holzer and the late Fader Reichard - whose passion and generosity helped shape the vision for this year’s event - and supported by a dedicated committee, PAWSport to Paris netted over $166,000 for the shelter animals.

Arriving guests felt the ambiance of Paris as they paused to take photos at the beautifully decorated Eiffel Tower. From there, attendees immersed themselves in the festivities – purchasing tickets for a fabulous prize drawing, buying keys for the chance to unlock more exclusive prizes, and bidding on spectacular silent auction items which included previously loved designer handbags, jewelry, and accessories. The prize drawing included a Gucci Microguccissima shoulder bag, a premier VIP Theater Experience at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, and the Grand Prize of an unforgettable trip for two to Paris generously donated by Fader Reichard. The lucky winners were Sandy Rupp, Meghan Gaddis, and Marlene Aguero, who took home the Parisian getaway.

As always, adoptable dogs from the HSBC added joy to the day, delighting guests at the Mobile Adoptions area and later stealing the show alongside the models during the fashion show’s grand finale.

During the cocktail hour guests enjoyed the musical talents of singer Marlena Rose, followed by a Parisian-inspired luncheon. The afternoon was hosted by Honorary Emcee Jacey Birch of WPLG Local 10, and featured a dazzling fashion show styled by The Pretty Nomad and The Vintage Nomad, with PAWS members serving as the beautiful models.

This year’s event will always hold a special place in our hearts, as the PAWS family fondly remembers Fader Reichard, whose dedication, creativity, and enduring generosity helped make PAWSport to Paris such a meaningful success. Her legacy of love for animals and commitment to the cause will continue to inspire all who knew her.

PAWS and the Angel PAWS Committee extend heartfelt thanks to their generous sponsors, underwriters, and all who contributed to the success of this chic afternoon. Held in April at Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa, PAWS Whispers of Enchantment: A Night in the Hidden Garden Gala, presented by Spirit Airlines, was a night to remember. Chairwomen Dawn Dellapina and Danielle Gaudreau and their hard-working committee were thrilled that the magical evening netted a record-breaking $420,000.

Champagne awaited arriving guests, who stopped for a keepsake photo at the step & repeat. Cocktail hour offered Tito’s Handmade Vodka specialty cocktails, appetizers, and an incredible silent auction. Nestled among lush gardeninspired decor, the silent auction raised a Gala record of $73,000.

A prize drawing added sparkle to the night, with Melissa Rocker winning an exquisite one-of-a-kind blue zircon and diamond earrings by award-winning designer Robert Pelliccia, generously donated by J.R. Dunn Jewelers. As they entered the ballroom, attendees were greeted with lively tunes from the band Private Stock. There was also a performance by American Heritage School’s Acapella Singers. Dear HSBC,

We celebrated Mako’s birthday over the weekend! He’s now three and has officially been with us for a year. Time flies when you’re having fun with the ones you love!

Justin Russell (Mako had over 100,000 views on social media. Justin drove from Indiana to adopt him.)

Hi,

Cardamon is adjusting well to her new home. She’s such a sweetheart! Thank you for the gift of the beautiful shirt!

The Leroys Boyton Beach

Dear Humane Society,

Isaw your story on Instagram about Katerina and was heartbroken that people were just walking past her…I asked my husband if we could have her and he said yes! To my surprise, that very same day he called me after I finished work and said we were going to visit her, but when I got to the car she was already there and smothered me with kisses! She is such a sweet girl I am in love with this angel. I did change her name to Dolly. She’s settled in with her big sisters, Maisie who’s also a shelter dog and my cat Kitty.

I thank Dolly’s Dream for paying for Dolly’s adoption fees and for her toys and items to settle her into our home. I am very grateful for everything, God bless!!

Dear HSBC,

We’ve only had Pepper for about seven months now, but we see her as a member of our family. There is never a dull moment with her. She has such a unique personality of spunk and care. She embodies what it means to be a companion. Pepper has been very patient with us and has fully embraced the idea of being in our family and for that we thank her every single day!

Always, Nikita and Samuel

New mom Elina tells us that Princess is a loving 13-year-old who enjoys sunbathing, scratching her cardboard scratcher, and eating sardines as a treat! She loves to cuddle with her Italian Greyhound sibling and has been renamed Princess Truffle Brie. The family lives in Weston.

Dear HSBC,

Alice and her mom decided to take the scenic route home, during which they bonded and explored together. Eight-year-old Alice, formally Pumpernickel, was adopted by Amaya who lives in Potomac, Maryland. Amaya had seen her post on our social media after the pup had been with us for over two months, and knew she had to adopt her.

(Alice had nearly 140,000 views on social media.)

Mr. Chubbs, previously known as Stitch, was one of our most popular social media stars with 6.2 million views on Facebook, 1.3 million on Instagram, 1.8 million on TikTok and 56,000 on YouTube. A transfer from the county shelter, he was adopted by the Lavalle family of Lighthouse Point. Since Mr. Chubbs was heartwormpositive, we will be seeing him soon for his complimentary treatment so that he can live a long and healthy life.

Dear HSBC,

Saxon was more than just a dog; he was a quiet guardian, a devoted friend, and a constant source of love for over 20 incredible years.

Adopted as a puppy from the HSBC, he found his forever home with Craig and Ken Rogalski, his devoted dog parents. From the very beginning, Saxon’s gentle spirit and selfless heart defined him -- never needy, always kind, and endlessly loyal.

Through the years, he was lovingly cared for by his dedicated veterinary team…Their care, combined with Saxon’s remarkable resilience, contributed to his extraordinary and long life.

Saxon asked for nothing yet gave everything, standing faithfully by his family with quiet strength and unconditional love. Forever cherished. Forever missed.

Craig and Ken Rogalski

Mochi waited patiently for more than 80 days to be adopted. His new mom Shaina sent this photo and said, “Living his best life!” The two live in Tamarac. (Mochi had more than 800,000 social media views.)

Good morning, Iadopted sweet Tulsa back on Jan 19, 2023 and she has been an amazing companion! We have done a few road trips, but Tulsa absolutely needed to visit one city…attaching some pics of Tulsa in Tulsa.

Thanks so much for all your wonderful organization and staff do for these dogs (and people)!

Sincerely, Brian

Hello HSBC,

Magic came home with me in March and is doing quite well! She loves kneading thick blankets, and she never fails to purr while making biscuits. Her favorite spot to curl up and watch a Panthers game is either in a Costco box or next to her human on the couch when he’s not at the game.

Thanks to everyone there for giving me a chance to adopt such a wonderful kitty, and to Sam Bennett for his Benny’s Buddies program.

Featuring warm and fuzzy shelter stories

What a Champ!

An injured seven-month-old pup was found in March outside Broward County Animal Care, the county-funded shelter responsible for strays. His wounds were so severe he was transferred to Advanced Veterinary Care Center where he was stabilized. A rescue plea was sent out and the HSBC vet team offered to help. The courageous dog was given the name Champ. Champ arrived with a large wound right down the middle of his back. Under sedation, the area was debrided and the patient placed on multiple medications for pain, plus antibiotics. A honey bandage was applied. Champ had many bandage changes and received frequent cold laser treatments to help with the healing process. Chew sticks kept Champ occupied and he was a good patient!

Once he mended sufficiently, Champ (now named Brick) soon found a home with Zackary Torrent, who works as Hospital Manager for VCA Promenade Animal Hospital. Zackary writes us, “From the first day, Brick has been an absolute joy and the perfect addition to our home. With the incredible support of my team at Promenade and the expert care of my DVMs, Dr. Willie and Dr. Sam, his back fully healed within a month. It’s been amazing to watch him thrive. Brick loves car rides, playing at the park, and curling up next to sister Jessie for naps. I cannot imagine our lives without him.”

Soothing slave was applied to the injury frequently, and this boy took his treatments very well.

At first, sightless Eevee would scramble to the top of the tree and meow for help to get down. She soon learned to hold on with her front paws and swing her bottom to reach the lower levels and get down on her own.

With excellent medical care and therapy, Brick’s injury healed beautifully -- and quickly!

Little Eevee’s happy tale began one day in January when she somehow followed a student home from school, and the family brought her to the HSBC as a stray.

Upon examination the HSBC veterinarian determined the kitten was blind and had microphthalmia – a condition where one or both eyes are abnormally small. (This is often associated with other eye defects.) To prevent future problems and infections, once Eevee was big enough both eyes were removed, and she went to a foster home to recover.

After making a television appearance on Local 10, Eevee was adopted by a loving family in Plantation. She shares the home with three feline siblings but her very best friend is Gertie, a senior Chihuahua mix who is also an HSBC alumnus.
