Fall 2024
News from the Humane Society of Broward County

From Your Board Chair

Dear Friends and Supporters,

It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since my first Chairman of the Board letter appeared in Paw Prints.

As the saying goes, “time flies when you’re having fun!” I also made my first donation to HSBC in May of 1997 and have loved being involved every day since!

As we enter the fall season, so too does the Humane Society of Broward County enter its fundraising season, with various events hosted by the PAWS Auxiliary, Teen Club, Friends of Animals Club, and the shelter. All of these are posted on HSBC’s website; bookmark humanebroward.com so you won’t miss out on any of the fun!

As 2025 fast approaches, we are working on the annual VCA Walk for the Animals, scheduled for February 1, 2025 at Las Olas Intracoastal Promenade Park. It’s never too early to start your individual or Pack fundraising efforts – especially considering that your donors might want to make their 2024 year-end donations. Log on to walk4theanimals.com for more information that will help you get started. Every donation, no matter the size, makes a significant difference and helps us fulfill our mission.

Donations also arrive at the shelter in the form of grant

On the Cover: Shelter alumni Elvis and Phoebe were adopted a few months apart by the Pechin family of Wilton Manors. The duo loves playing, exploring, and snuggling. Elvis is more reserved, while Phoebe is a ball of energy.

funding. One such grant has been awarded to HSBC by Spirit Airlines to fund the Mutts & Meows for the Military program, which you’ll read about in this issue. The program aims to create meaningful connections between our wonderful dogs and cats, and the brave veterans who have served our country. We believe that the bond between a veteran and a furry friend can be incredibly healing and fulfilling. Through this program, veterans seeking companionship can be matched with a loving pet in need of a forever home, with Spirit Airlines underwriting the cost. It’s a beautiful way to honor veterans’ service while helping our animals to find the loving families they deserve.

There are many ways you can contribute to our cause. Whether it’s through a monetary donation, attending a fundraising event, volunteering, or simply spreading the word about our programs, your support is invaluable.

As always, we are deeply grateful for your dedication to the Humane Society of Broward County. It is through the collective efforts of our community that we can make a difference in the lives of so many animals and people.

With heartfelt gratitude, Christy Gumberg

Local Band Serenades

Shelter animals had a musical treat this summer when South Florida-based indie rock band We Are the Boas performed a private concert in the kennels. The four-piece group came in an hour after closing to deliver their music therapy, with the HSBC streaming live on Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and Facebook, with more than 10,000 viewers tuning in from around the world. Check out this talented group of musicians @wearetheboas.

Trust Contributes Toward Our Mission

A donation of $21,335 for calendar year 2024 was recently made possible through the Gore Family Memorial Foundation Trust after review of recommendation by members of the John W. Gore Family. The funds are designated to support general operating costs and support HSBC’s mission. We are extremely grateful to the Gore family and to the GFMFT for their generosity.

For the Love of PAWS

“For the Love of PAWS” is a unique opportunity to pay tribute to a beloved pet. The pet attends a private photo session at the shelter with photographer David Lee (people may appear in the photo as well). The contributor’s photo of choice is framed and displayed at the shelter in one of three select areas, with the cost ranging from $1,500 to $5,000 depending upon the area chosen. Photos remain on display for five years, after which the client may renew or keep the framed photo. The contribution is tax-deductible.

Hurricane Helene Assistance

In late September as Hurricane Helene approached the Florida panhandle, two animal shelters in that area requested assistance. Madison County Animal Services Division and Taylor County Animal Control both have outdoor kennels that are prone to flooding and subject to power outages and wind damage; they desperately needed to get their animals to a safe place. HSBC was one of three organizations that stepped up to assist.

With the animals coming to us from 400 miles away, HSBC staff left Fort Lauderdale to meet a transport company halfway. Traffic

and rainy conditions made for a long journey, but the rendezvous in Ocala went smoothly, with 15 dogs and 17 cats arriving at HSBC one day before the hurricane made landfall. We’ve had many happy adoptions since these hurricane evacuees came in. Some of the dogs had been at their former shelter for as long as 10 months, so it’s been especially heartwarming to see them get adopted into loving families. As of this writing, one mama cat and her tiny kittens are in foster care, but the rest of the felines placed for adoption have been finding homes quickly!

Madison County shelter was no place for animals during a hurricane.

At the meeting point in Ocala, HSBC’s Tiffany Lucero transfers cats for the next leg of the trip.

for a shelter in small-town Perry. Staff there needed to relocate some of the dogs that had been in their facility before the storm, so we opened our doors to eight dogs. Once we transported them to the HSBC and placed them for adoption, most of them found homes very quickly. Then there was seven-yearold Phelps, a heartwormpositive, skinny pup whose ribs were visible. With lots of TLC, Phelps gained a few pounds and, nearly a month later, went home to Tamarac and a family who adores him.

As we go to press, Hurricane Milton is approaching the West Coast of Florida. We are committed to helping other shelters and their animals - and we need your help. Please foster, adopt, and/or donate.

Education Volunteer June and her Education Dog, Abbey, entertained and educated these happy campers.

Therapy animals do so much more than provide emotional comfort and joy; they’re also fantastic tools in helping to educate the community. One recent example of this is when several of our Therapy Dog and Education Dog teams visited Christ Church Summer Camp in Fort Lauderdale. Young campers enjoyed learning about pet safety while petting and cuddling with their furry visitors.

Therapy Team Highlight: Barry & Roxy

Barry and Roxy

Barry first began volunteering with us in 2016, and in 2019 he and his wife Sue joined the Animal Assisted Therapy program with their pup Roxy. Her sweet demeanor and her love of meeting new people made Roxy a great candidate for pet therapy work. Barry and Roxy visit Daniel Cantor Senior Center in Sunrise and have become a welcome staple for the seniors there during their weekly visits. Our AAT program and the South Florida community are fortunate to have the dedicated team of Barry and Roxy!

The HSBC’s Animal Assisted Therapy program is fortunate to have a wonderful relationship with a variety of community partners. One of these is WPLG Local 10, and in July their show SoFlo Health aired a story about the tremendous health benefits that pet therapy can provide. Host Hunter Franqui interviewed Abe Friedman and our amazing therapy team, Nancy Johnson and Looney. Abe and Looney have developed a special relationship, with Abe deriving a great deal of happiness and comfort from the visiting kitty –proof that senior citizens who are away from their families can benefit from the attentions of a furry companion.

HSBC AAT Teams go the extra mile to spread cheer at the Young Survival Coalition summit.

Supporting the community is a main goal for our program, and in September several AAT teams made the drive across Alligator Alley to Bonita Springs for the Young Survival Coalition’s annual Wellness Summit. The summit is held in support of young adults affected by breast cancer.

New Program Announcement

We have a new program in the works called “Memory Mews” which targets South Floridians living with dementia, and their caregivers. For people with dementia who do not have a companion animal but would enjoy their company, we will provide the opportunity for in-shelter pet therapy within a structured program.

Multiple studies have shown that animal interaction can be extremely helpful for those suffering from dementia. Benefits of pet therapy include increased social behaviors, reduced behavioral disturbance, reduced agitation, and increased communication. A free program, Memory Mews will require patients to sign up beforehand for the limited available spots. If you are interested in learning more, contact therapy@ hsbroward.com and check our website for updates.

Clinic Corner Be Tick Smart

What are ticks?

Ticks are parasites that are related to spiders (they have eight legs). Ticks can be very small but when they feed on the blood of an animal, they swell, and their bodies become flat and oval. They are of extreme concern for the health of dogs and cats, and even humans, as they transmit many diseases, some of which can be very severe.

Where are ticks found?

Tick-borne diseases affecting dogs and cats

These parasites can transmit many diseases to dogs and cats. Some of the most common are Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, Anaplasmosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and Babesiosis, but there are many more. These diseases can be very severe, and even life threatening, if not treated quickly and properly. Symptoms can include lethargy, anorexia, fever, anemia, lameness, and may even progress to difficulty breathing.

Ticks can be found worldwide, and the distribution of their different species varies depending on climate and land usage. Many species are found in parts of the United States, including South Florida. Ticks can typically be found in wooded areas or wherever there are tall grasses and weeds, and can even be in people’s back yards, if the grass is tall enough.

The tick’s life cycle

Most ticks go through four life stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. After hatching from the egg, they must begin feeding (by ingesting the blood of an animal) at every stage of their life cycle, to be able to survive. They can feed on many species of animals, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Some tick species can require many hosts to complete their life cycle, while others prefer to feed on the same host during all life stages.

If left unchecked, sometimes ticks can completely infest a dog.

How to prevent tick infestations in dogs and cats

Ticks can be found anywhere on the body of a dog or cat, but they typically like to hide in between the toes, inside the ears, and under the tail. Since prevention is better than treatment, there are many available products (topical, tablets and collars) that can be quite effective to avoid infestations. Many of these products can be found at our vaccine clinic. When choosing a specific one, please consult your veterinarian for the best option for your dog or cat’s age, weight, and additional health concerns.

Low-Cost Spay & Neuter Event

In September we held our third “Fix it Friday,” with the shelter’s veterinary staff performing 80 feline spays and neuters for owned cats in the community. It was a very busy day in the clinic; cats began arriving for check-in at 7 a.m., with 20 patients coming in each hour. The entire undertaking was a tremendous team effort, and 28 staff and volunteers made it happen!

You can help!

Donations from the public make this possible, covering expenses above and beyond our low Fix it Friday fee of $75 (which includes a rabies vaccination if needed). Veterinarians other than the HSBC are charging $500 to $800 for these procedures, which is cost-prohibitive for many families. We know our Fix it Friday events are stopping hundreds of kittens from entering into the pet overpopulation equation.

Use the envelope included in this newsletter to help support our spay/neuter efforts.

Clinic Statistics

June, July, and August:

Limited spay/neuter surgeries for TNR & surrender prevention: 655

Animals in foster care: 351

Dogs treated for heartworm: 40

Dogs are treated at the shelter or at select VCA Animal Hospitals with medication we provide.
Ticks like to hide in between paw pads.

Held in September, the PAWS Season Opener launched the group’s fundraising season, with the membership appreciation event raising over $17,000 for the shelter. Attendees were greeted with champagne and a tropical cocktail, and waiting to say hello with tails wagging were Lola, an Animal Assisted Therapy dog, and Chewy, an Education dog. After a behind-the-scenes shelter tour, guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, and decadent desserts. They also indulged in the cuddling corner where adoptable shelter cuties drew plenty of attention. Talented young artist Sean Brushingham displayed and sold his beautiful and unique custom-made note cards. He generously donated a portion of the proceeds to PAWS.

The Season Opener provided the opportunity for both new and long-time

members to sign up for event committees and to learn about HSBC’s many programs. Attendees also showed their support by participating in the “Giving Wall” which featured a variety of items needed to help care for the animals and maintain the shelter’s operations. Guests could choose from a range of donations including toys for the animals, muchneeded clinic equipment, and other critical supplies that keep the animals cared for.

Spirit Airlines Mutts and Meows for the Military Program Marks its First Year

We are all aware of the health benefits that having a companion animal can provide, be it mental, emotional or physical. For a military veteran who suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, the emotional support that a beloved animal provides can be life changing. (And for those who do not suffer from PTSD, the benefits can still have a profound effect on health and happiness!)

Spirit Airlines shows its support of both shelter animals and the US Military with its sponsorship of our Mutts and Meows for the Military program. Initiated in 2023, the program promotes the healing power of the human-animal bond by assisting military veterans with the adoption of homeless animals at the HSBC.

Juice, a Belgian Malinois, was given up by his family at nearly two years of age because they didn’t have time for him.

Danielle and Kevin, both US Marines who already had one Belgian at home, saw our Weekly Tails segment on social media and drove down from Port St. Lucie to meet Juice and bring him home. Below is a letter updating us on how the newly enlarged family is faring:

“Juice is doing so amazing and is getting more comfortable each day. He is a big cuddle bug and loves playtime. He is already beginning to learn a few tricks and has a new tire toy he is really loving. We are navigating the challenges of Athena (our other Mal) having a new big brother. Kevin and I have a special place for Belgian Malinois. They are so sweet

RMutts and Meows provides the following for adopting military personnel:

• Waived adoption fee for adult dogs/cats 6 months and older (adult cats are $80 and adult dogs are $200)

• Adoption package to help ensure a successful adoption:

• Leashes, collars, toys, treats, crate ($250 value for dogs, $100 value for cats)

• Behavior classes at HSBC ($180 value)

• Resource list for local trainers

In the year since its inception, 105 cats and dogs have found new homes in military families. Read on to learn the personal stories of just a few of these fortunate pairings.

and so smart, and have a very high drive. We knew we were wanting to add another dog to our pack. We began talking about if it was the right time and then I saw Juice on Humane Broward’s Instagram. I immediately shared the post with Kevin and submitted for adoption.

It is so sad to see amazing dogs (like Juice) end up in shelters. I knew it would be a little bit of a challenge, but I wanted to meet Juice and try to give him the best life. I’m so happy the meet and greet went well and we were able to add him to our family. Not only that, the shelter made the process so easy with its Veterans program that we were able to set him up with necessities to take him home. Thank you!”

connection.

Here’s the rest of the story:

“My name is Ivonne M. Becerra, SFC, US ARMY retired. I had a beautiful companion, a Chihuahua named Sparky, for 14 years that, due to terminal illness, I had to make the decision to put to rest. This left me with more anxiety (I suffer from PTSD) from the Gulf War (1991) than I could handle, and I thought I was never going to find this type of love and companionship again. When I was finally ready to adopt, I was watching the morning news

on channel 10 on Saturday, July 20, and the “adopt a dog from the Humane Society” segment came on. There was Roman, a beautiful, shy 10-month-old Chihuahua. I immediately went to see him with my daughter only to find that I would be 2nd on a waiting list. I was shattered again but did not give up hope. Monday came, and I was given the call to go pick up Groaning Roman (the nickname given by his handler Matthew because he was always groaning). They told me that he was mine!

I picked up Roman, now named Pancho, and it has been the BEST decision I’ve made. I have a new companion who loves to bring me toys, play around, goes with me almost everywhere and is giving me a new spark in life. I’ve been blessed many times in my lifetime to be the mom of many beautiful pets, and now I have Pancho to take care of and enjoy life as it should be. Thank you to Spirit Airlines, to the Humane Society, and all the wonderful volunteers and workers that made this happen.”

Ivonne and Roman had an instant

Zeus, nearly two years old, was surrendered to us because the landlord wouldn’t allow him. His new family brought him home in February and recently sent us this note: “We are still trying to decide if we adopted Zeus or if he adopted us. He is not the first dog we have adopted from the Humane Society and most likely won’t be the last, but he is the most unique.

This adoption was completely different for us as it was the first time we had the full “military experience,” the Mutts and Meows program sponsored by Spirit Airlines. My husband is retired from the US Coast Guard. We were unaware of the program but of course took advantage of the offering. We would have taken Zeus home no matter what - but we reaped the benefits of the Mutts and Meows program. We were able to take him into the pet boutique and let him go nuts, from toys to a bed with blanket, food dish, collar, ID tag and leash. What a marvelous bonus!

Now that we are home and settled, Zeus is thriving! He gets along well with our other two dogs and loves running around the yard and playing in the hose trying to “eat” the water. Zeus displaces my husband in bed at night and really loves our comforter. He has a laundry basket full of toys that he routinely selects from

and brings to us to play. It is so comical!

We feel so lucky to have had an instant connection with him on the day we visited. We knew at once we found a new family member and feel we won the lottery with Zeus when we locked eyes with him and ultimately brought him home.

When we go on walks or to the park, we are astounded at the compliments we get regarding his looks - he’s a beautiful dog!

LKOur definition of finding and adopting Zeus is “our treasure.”

imchi, a large orange tabby, was brought to the HSBC because his owner had to travel to Venezuela for an extended time due to a family emergency. On his paperwork she wrote that he was outgoing and social, greeting her at the front door when she came home. She said he was playful and slept in bed with her two dogs.

A week later Kevin, retired from the US Army, visited the shelter after his cat had passed away. He missed having a feline friend and was looking for a new companion who was friendly

aurie, who served in the US Air Force, adopted a two-year-old cat who now has the name Ke-Ka. Her kitty had passed away six weeks prior; she was hesitant to get another but decided to come and visit to see if she clicked with anyone. Ke-Ka was the fourth cat she met, and he was perfect for her. Once he got home he was shy and hid a little for a few days, but soon he felt more comfortable and came out of his shell. Laurie is in love with her new buddy, who is now her ESA pet. He sleeps with her -- or on her -- and always wants to be touching, even if it is just a paw while sitting on the couch. He has brought joy, love, and a sense of calm to Laurie. She tells us, “The Spirit Veteran’s program is fantastic and I hope more veterans are able to adopt as a result.”

and got along with dogs. Kimchi was the one! He soon settled in well at his new home in Hollywood, providing comfort, love and entertainment. Kevin told us, “The Spirit Airlines program was a wonderful surprise, simply fantastic. Adopting Kimchi filled a hole in my heart.”

Laurie served years ago in the Air Force.
Now Laurie enjoys her retirement alongside her much-loved Ke-Ka.

Donald Orloski and Bobby

Volunteer Spotlight

Spotlight On: Donald Orloski

Department: Kennel Guide, Vaccine Clinic Greeter and Foster Care

Started Volunteering: June 2021

Pets at Home: Bobby, a two-year-old Lab mix “bundle of love.” A recent adoptee from HSBC, sweet Bobby was, happily, a foster fail.

Favorite Part of Volunteering: “I love volunteering at HSBC, meeting fellow animal lovers and helping the community care for their pets with low-cost vaccines and products. I also enjoy helping guide people through the process of adoption so they can find their new furry family member. Being part of the pack is so much fun!”

What the Animals Say: “Donald’s commitment to helping both the humans and us shelter kids is what makes him so special. He really cares about doing whatever he can to give everyone what they need, whether that is information, directions, a kind word, a cuddle, or a treat! He’s someone who can always be depended on. Plus, his house is a wonderful place to hang out and just be yourself. He makes it hard to wanna leave and go to another happy home. Just ask Bobby!”

We need foster homes!

Foster parenting in a hugely valuable department as it gives cats, kittens, dogs and puppies the extra time and care they need before they can be placed for adoption. We are in great need of foster volunteers. To learn more, contact volunteer@hsbroward.com.

TB & Training and Behavior Multi-Dog Households the

Managing a multi-dog household can be a challenge, as dogs need for a surprisingly large area of living space to be mentally and emotionally content. Common problems with multiple dogs may be aggression between dogs, having accidents in the house or difficulty house training, or a pet that is fearful and constantly hiding.

Managing Your Environment

Each animal should have his own feeding area, resting area and toys. A dog who doesn’t have to share his resources will be less likely to become territorial or competitive. (If your pets are sharing nicely, great! Some dogs are naturally less, or more, territorial than others.)

Correcting Mistakes

If you have dogs that fight on a regular basis, the most important thing is to manage the environment. Dogs that fight learn this behavior and will use it more quickly in dealing with conflicts. Don’t let it become a habit! Separate the dogs into different areas of the house while you work on modifying the behavior. Several hours to several days of separation may be necessary, depending on the severity of the aggression. Gradual exposure and re-introductions are needed when attempting to bring dogs back together in the same area. Positive reinforcement with food treats and verbal praise will help.

Avoiding the Pitfalls

Never punish your dogs for fighting. In most cases this will only elicit an increase in aggression or fear, and you may become the indirect target of a bite or scratch. Redirect your dog when you see one targeting another (stalking, standing over, or staring) and get his attention focused on something else, such as a toy or a food treat. Learn your dog’s body language and try to anticipate when aggression might develop between your pets. Avoid activities that may trigger aggressive responses in your pets. Stopping fights before they start will help to decompress tension, and if a fight has already begun, interrupt it as soon as possible with a loud clap of your hands or a sharp “HEY!”. You may need a spray bottle of water or a can of compressed air to use as an interruption. Do not attempt to pick up or separate your dogs with your hands or feet. Once separated, your dogs should be isolated from each other to calm them down.

Tips and Hints

There are a lot of variables that determine whether dogs in your house will be friends or foes, many of them not fully understood even by the most experienced professionals. Socialization plays a big role; puppies that have been exposed to other dogs at an early age or come from friendly parents are more likely to be tolerant or friendly towards other dogs.

• For extreme cases, a trip to your vet may be needed; medication might help your dog through the training and behavior modification period. It is also important to ensure your dog’s issues are not related to a medical condition.

Positive Way

• Spaying and neutering is important in creating a wellbalanced multi-dog household. Just one intact member may cause problems in the entire group.

• Establishing predictable routines in the household and eliminating or minimizing stressful events, such as planning a big party or having company stay over during training and behavior modification periods, will make learning easier for your pet.

• Small spaces such as hallways and doorways can cause elevated tension, so make sure each dog has enough personal space to be comfortable.

• Exercise can help to reduce stress. Find an activity your dogs enjoy and take time to play a fun game with them.

It’s entirely possible to have a happy pack, even when merging different personalities. Just ask HSBC alumni Ruby, Frank, and Felix!

Bennet and Oliver have no problems dining together as long as their bowls are sufficiently separated.

Hello,

Karen Koski, who had a deaf 9-year-old pitbull named Ellie at home, told us she was looking for a deaf puppy to introduce into the family. We were able to make that happen with adorable little Bee. Karen tells us, “Bee and Ellie are very much in love! Thank you for making this possible for all of us! She is so perfect.”

Bee and Ellie

The Newman family of Weston adopted Jasper and Jackson in April. Mom, Meri, tells us they are spoiled daily and enjoying endless love and fun in their new home. Sons Braiden and Aron also raised money for the shelter animals with a bake sale! Jasper and Jackson have their own Instagram account; go to @tabbythecats to follow their antics.

Iwanted to share an update and some photos of Charlotte (now called Nala). She has adjusted extremely well since coming home with us. She and her big (younger) brother Cato play beautifully together and are rarely more than an arm’s reach apart. I love that they have become instant best friends. She is truly an amazing girl and filled with so much love that I just can’t imagine life without her.

Thank you for making it possible for her to be a part of our family!

Stacey Palm Bay

Nola was adopted this summer into her forever family in Tamarac. They tell us it took her a while to come out of her shell, but she is now such a happy girl! She loves her puppaccinos and sunbathing in the backyard.

Stanley was found as a stray and tested positive for heartworm disease. This big, sweet, 60-pound boy spent months in the shelter before being featured on our social media. His Instagram post racked up over 13 million views, and one of those viewers was a lovely family in Davie. Within a week, Stanely was happy in his new home, romping with two built-in siblings and touting his own Instagram page: @stanleythecowpup.

Hi, Ijust wanted to thank y’all so much again for Logan, aka Buck!! He’s been an absolute dream already and was the missing link in our family! I attached some pictures of his adventures so far. We are looking forward to going to future HSBC events with him.

Hi,

Houston has made himself at home. He shows how excited he is to be part of our family. He is ecstatic that we chose him and shows it with tons of kisses and bouncing off the wall with joy. We had to put down our dog of 13 years due to cancer and were devastated. We miss Cookie, but Houston has brought joy back into our lives. We know she picked him for us.

Thank you, Melanie

Featuring warm and fuzzy shelter stories

Feline Tragedy Has Happy Ending

Macha came to our shelter having suffered a traumatic fall of about 25 feet from a third-story balcony. His family rushed him to an emergency veterinary clinic where an examination showed that he had air in his chest, bruising of the lungs, a shattered front elbow, and a broken rear leg. He was stabilized and put on oxygen support at the clinic, but his family could not afford the care he would need moving forward. They reached out to see if we could help by continuing his care and finding him a new home.

We consulted with a veterinary surgeon who determined that Matcha could have successful orthopedic surgery on his rear

Reunited

Aleg, but the front leg damage was so bad that it required amputation. Matcha had two surgeries and spent about a month and a half in foster care where he made a full recovery – while capturing the hearts of his foster family. He fit in so well, they couldn’t imagine letting him go!

Matcha adjusted quickly to his threelegged status and found his happy new forever home without ever having to be placed up for adoption.

n older cat arrived at the shelter as a stray, and when we scanned for a microchip we saw she’d been adopted from us more than a decade earlier as a kitten; she was now 10 years old. When we tried to follow up, the phone number was no longer in service and emails came back “undeliverable.” Our sleuth adoption staff persevered and eventually discovered that the owner had passed away at the end of last year, the cat had gone missing, and the family had moved. Despite relocating, the family had been searching for Latty and we were able to reunite them!

Make sure your pet’s chip is registered and that you provide an emergency contact number and email. Check with the chip company to make sure the information is correct.

Cassidy, whose mother had adopted Latty, was so happy to be reunited!

Gosha’s “By-Product” Adoption

When the story was shown on the news about HSBC taking in animals from Hurricane Helene’s path, Fort Lauderdale resident Catalina was watching. The news reporter told viewers they should visit our website to see who needs a home, and Catalina did just that. Gosha, a Sphynx cat, had been at the shelter before our Helene transport. Catalina had a Sphynx at home and wanted another. It was a match!

This is an example of how assisting other shelters brings in not only people who want to adopt those animals, but many “current residents” find new homes as well.

Gosha found his new mom, Catalina, in a roundabout way - thanks to our hurricane assistance efforts.
