Dear Friends,
Iwant to take a moment to reflect on the incredible efforts and dedication that make our animal shelter a place of hope and second chances, as well as thank our many donors for contributing to our success. While you read this spring issue of Paw Prints, please know we have much to celebrate…from the outcome of our annual VCA Walk for the Animals, to honoring our longestserving volunteer, to planning for our future.
Our recent VCA Walk for the Animals was a tremendous success! Thanks to our dedicated supporters, volunteers, and participants, we reached our goal and raised essential funds to help provide for the animals in our care. Seeing so many compassionate individuals come together for this event is always truly inspiring for me. On behalf of the staff and Board of Directors, please know we are deeply grateful for your continued generosity. Your participation ensures that we can continue our mission of helping animals in need.
In this issue, we also shine a spotlight on one of our most dedicated volunteers – Barbara Hudson – who will celebrate 35 years of continuous service this summer. Her unwavering commitment has been instrumental

in providing comfort and care to countless animals. Volunteers like Barbara embody the spirit of our mission, and we are honored to recognize her selfless contributions. Recently, our Board of Directors convened for an all-day strategic retreat in late January, where we focused on shaping the future of our shelter. Together, we established key goals and objectives aimed at expanding our outreach, improving our facilities, and enhancing our programs to better serve both animals and our community. This planning session reinforced our shared vision and dedication to making our shelter a beacon of hope for years to come. Stay tuned as we begin the detailed process needed to achieve our goals!
As we step into the spring season, we remain deeply grateful for your support – whether through donations, volunteerism, or simply spreading the word about our mission. You are making a difference and we thank you for being a part of our journey. Together, we can continue to change lives -- one paw at a time!
With gratitude,

Scammers have recently been claiming to be representatives of the shelter, calling pet owners who have posted their lost animals on various sites including Ring, Nextdoor, Facebook, Pawboost and on flyers. They state that the pet is at our shelter, injured, and the owner must send money to save their pet. We have been contacted by several people who have had this happen to them, with some people falling victim and losing money to these unscrupulous, cruel scammers. We will never ask for money for a medical procedure if a lost pet is brought to us injured. If you have lost your pet and are contacted by someone, please be careful. Ask questions and do not Venmo, Zelle, or transfer money to anyone. If you have offered a reward, do not pay it until you have your pet back.
Calling all green thumbs! Our popular Plant Sale is back on Saturday, May 10 with a gorgeous variety of plants for purchase. Presented by our Teen Club and Friends of Animals Club, the plant sale offers succulents, orchids, decorative plants, herbs, house plants and flowering plants. Visit the shelter between 10:30 and 2:00; food and drink will be offered for purchase, and all proceeds benefit the animals.

We’re happy to report the following new homes found during December 2024, January and February 2025:
We extended our usual three-day Adopt a Sweetheart event in February, hoping to get more shelter animals into loving new homes. From February 14 through 24, select animals had their adoption fees waived; those one year and older were available at half the usual adoption fee. We also introduced our very own “new breed” – the Tuxebull, which is a black-and-white colored bully breed dog. Several of these found their families! All told, the 10 days of Adopt a Sweetheart saw 27 cats, 46 dogs, 23 kittens, 38 puppies, and eight “others” heading out the front door. That’s 142 happy new homes!
Thanks to a post on our Facebook page, Gee Gee and Rebecca found each other during the Adopt a Sweetheart event. After 1.6 million views, 23,000 shares, and over 5,500 comments on Facebook, plus 190,000 views on Instagram, Gee Gee’s four-month shelter stay was over! Rebecca drove from Daytona Beach to adopt her, and later told us, “She is such a great dog. She cuddled up with me this morning and laid back against me. I ordered steps for her so she doesn’t have any trouble getting in and out of my SUV. She has short little legs, lol. She sleeps with me…I am so glad to have her. Thank you for loving her until I could get her. She really is an amazing pup -- my baby girl .”
What could be more unique or satisfyingly fun than celebrating your special day with our furry shelter animals? Not only are you helping a great cause, but you’re also getting the bonus of “pet therapy” to make you and your party guests especially happy! No age is too young (or too old!) to celebrate. Adults may even be interested in some cold beverages to add to the celebration.
Parties are typically held on weekends and do book up fast. Fill out your registration form today at humanebroward.com under the “youth programs” tab.

In December, therapy teams visited Nova Southeastern University’s Upper School to help students relax before winter exams. Students and staff loved spending time with therapy dogs Fitzy, Daisy, Blue, Cowboy, Moki, and Zoe. The semi-annual visits to U School are always eagerly anticipated! Aside from offering students an opportunity to decompress, our therapy dogs also help bring people together, creating connections between individuals who may not usually interact in the same setting. In this photo are Cowboy and Blue.

NTherapy dogs Sadie, Zoe, and Moki visited Lakeside Elementary School in November to provide students and staff with an opportunity to unwind before Thanksgiving break. Our volunteers also taught the children about kindness and pet safety. Pictured here with the students are Sadie and Zoe.
Each year on February 14, Broward County Schools hold A Day of Service and Love to honor the 17 lives lost at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. This year, therapy teams visited Hollywood Hills High and Fort Lauderdale High. Hollywood Hills students spent time with therapy dogs Sadie, Daisy, Blue, and Bean, while Fort Lauderdale students enjoyed visits from Lola, Chewy, Buddy, and Louie. Combined, these eight dogs brought comfort and spread love to over 1,500 students.
ancy and her cat Looney joined our Animal Assisted Therapy Program in November of 2018. Since then, they’ve made regular visits to Barrington Terrace Assisted Living Facility and, in recent years, have expanded to include Park Summit Assisted Living Facility. Looney, with his calm and friendly nature, has become a beloved therapy cat, enjoying the residents’ attention -- especially the chin scratches he gets while lounging in laps! Nancy’s dedication, kindness, and warmth as a handler have been key to the success of their visits, making her an invaluable member of the HSBC AAT team. This photo was taken during a TV interview with Local 10 show SoFlo Health; pictured are Nancy and Looney with a favorite client, Abe.

You may read the title of this article and think it will never happen to your animal, but you never know what’s around the corner so it’s best to be informed. Cannabis toxicity occurs when a pet gets accidental exposure from inhalation or, more commonly, ingestion of marijuana. You may be surprised at how many animals encounter edibles as they continue to become more accessible; it happens while out on walks, at parks, visiting friends, and even at a restaurant.
The most common clinical signs from exposure to THC in marijuana are incoordination, startling easily, lethargy, vomiting, and light sensitivity. These signs can appear as early as 30 minutes after exposure, but can take up to two hours. Just like humans, dogs and cats can respond to cannabis and THC differently, with some being more sensitive than others. Diagnosing a patient with cannabis exposure can be a challenge, with no direct test to confirm it. Usually there is a known contact or evidence of the exposure. (Owners should know that veterinarians have no legal requirement to report marijuana toxicity, so they are safe to discuss it with their veterinarian and get the treatment needed for their animal.)
When discussing treatment options with your veterinarian, remember that they are not just treating the cannabis, but they also need to consider the type of exposure. If it was eaten in a baked good or other treat, they may consider chocolate toxicity. If it was inhaled, you may need to worry about respiratory tract irritation. There is no direct treatment for cannabis, but usually the animal will receive supportive care such as IV fluids or anti-nausea medications. Symptoms usually wear off over the next 24 to 48 hours but may dramatically improve in just a few hours. Animals rarely need hospitalization, but it may be necessary in severe cases.
It is important to distinguish the difference between cannabis/ THC exposure and the popular cannabidiol (CBD) treats
Ocommercially available. CBD is not a psychoactive drug and does not cause the same signs as THC exposure. Pet treats with CBD are becoming more frequently used for pets experiencing pain and anxiety, but most of these products are not regulated when it comes to the amount of CBD, and research is still being performed to determine the efficacy and suggested dosing. We recommend discussing the use of these treats with your veterinarian to see if they feel it is recommended for your pet. (Calming treats with ingredients other than CBD are sold at the shelter’s Pet Boutique.)
Case in point: When this pup’s owner saw him on the couch twitching and then unable to stand, they thought he was having a seizure and rushed to VCA Animal Hospital. It turns out he had possibly ingested a gummy with THC. He was given IV fluids and sent home to sleep it off.
rdinances for Broward County require that all dogs, cats, and ferrets receive a rabies vaccination and, by law, dogs and cats must wear a Broward County rabies registration tag on their collar.
Recently, Broward County Animal Care issued the new “Tags for Life” program. Instead of replacing the tag, the same tag is kept and is simply renewed annually when the rabies vaccination is administered. And starting in May of this year, the cost of the license renewal is discounted for animals that are microchipped ($25 for chipped animals, and $55 for those without a chip). Microchipping is available at our Vaccine Clinic for $25; the clinic is

Pets at Home: Stella, eight and a half years old, is a grey and white domestic shorthair cat who was adopted from HSBC when she was six. She is super loving and has a great personality.
Favorite Part of Volunteering: “I love knowing that I am helping give the cats the extra attention they need to stay happy while they wait for their new homes. While I clean cages, I make sure to give them plenty of cuddles and love. I volunteer on Tuesdays, so it’s my favorite day of the week!”
What the Animals Say: “Barbara is the cat’s meow! She is so dedicated to helping at the shelter and making sure all us kitties are not only living in sparkly clean cages with fresh litter boxes, but that we feel loved and cared for. She’s really good at petting us while she cleans! Tuesdays in the cattery are special because of Barbara.”
Foster parenting is hugely valuable to any animal shelter, as it gives cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies the extra time and care they need before they can be placed for adoption.
We are very much in need of foster homes for adult animals, and medical fosters as well.
There are lots of ways you can help us to help the animals. Just choose a wish here and make it come true. Feel free to grant as many wishes as you like! Should you have any questions, please call 954.989.3977.

The PAWS Orchid Blossom Tea, held on February 19 at the lovely home of Barbi and Frank Barefield, was a resounding success, raising over $56,400 to support the animals at the HSBC. Event chairs Barbi Barefield, Liz Brown, and Michelle Russo Matak were thrilled with the turnout and generosity of attendees at this beloved fundraising tradition.
As always, guests embraced the spirit of the Tea by donning their most fabulous hats and fascinators, adding a touch of elegance and creativity to the afternoon. Welcoming arriving attendees were two adorable puppies looking for their forever homes. Guests enjoyed champagne and wine, captured memories at a beautifully decorated photo area, and took part in a lucky draw auction featuring five fabulous prizes. Attendees could also purchase tickets for a special VIP table upgrade, with the lucky winners enjoying champagne butler service, a delectable dessert, VIP favors, and a stunning orchid centerpiece. Liz Brown was delighted to claim this exclusive experience for her table guests!
Throughout the afternoon, electric violinist Gareth Johnson provided a captivating musical backdrop while guests indulged in a sumptuous selection of tea sandwiches, scones, and desserts. The excitement continued with a live auction, led by HSBC
President and CEO, Christopher Agostino. The auction included a one-of-a-kind hat-making experience for eight people, hosted by Well Brimmed Hat Bar, as well as a champagne lunch for six at Neiman Marcus’ Mariposa restaurant with a Best of Beauty trend session, and an exclusive cocktail party for 25 at the winner’s home or at a venue of their choice, catered by Sandy James Fine Food & Productions.
Wrapping up the afternoon was the coveted Best Hat award. With so many stunning and creative designs, the judges faced a tough decision, ultimately choosing Sara Sears and Erika Beran as the deserving winners.

Guests kicked off the festivities by striking a pose in front of a dazzling step & repeat before diving into a spectacular day of holiday shopping. Fort Lauderdale’s finest pop-up boutiques offered an incredible selection of gifts for everyone on their list -- jewelry, home décor, pet goodies, stylish apparel, accessories, and much more. Best of all, participating vendors gave back a portion of their sales, making every purchase even more meaningful. Zeus’ follow-up adoption letter describes an amazing and very happy coincidence:
Dear HSBC,
It’s already a year since I adopted Zeus, and we are going strong. The big story is that his previous owner that was not allowed to take him to his country, Guyana, had to come back to Florida to take care of his parents. Now this is the extraordinary event -- he moved into my neighborhood and lives three houses down the street! Zeus recognized him immediately. What are the odds of this happening?! Now they get to see each other, and it’s mind boggling! It fills my heart.

Dear Humane Society of Broward, Hello, our family adopted “Mouse” (now known as Chip after our son named him) back in May, and we are so grateful to have him as a part of our family and couldn’t be happier to have him in our lives. I just wanted to send an update and let you know how well he’s doing in his new home with us! He has settled in wonderfully and has been such a great addition to our family. He especially loves my son -- they have become best buddies! Chip loves to supervise Kyrie and make sure he is okay!
I’ve attached a few photos so you can see how happy and loved he is. Thank you for everything you do to help animals find their forever homes. We are so grateful to have Chip as part of our family!
Best, Jamie Pembroke Pines
Hi! I wanted to reach out and share some pictures of my beautiful baby I adopted from you guys. Her name was Snow White (now known as Rain). I had such a wonderful experience at the shelter and I’m so grateful you guys brought me my baby girl!!

Hi,
We adopted this cat last week on Thursday. His name was Catana, we changed it to Marlin (like the fish - our other cat is Tuna). He is fitting in so well, he goes for wagon/stroller rides and is even learning to walk with a leash! He is SO good with my kids and such a lover. Also, he LOVES car rides. When we left the shelter, he got out of the box and rode home in the baby bassinet in the back of my car that I was donating and was just so happy!

Dear HSBC,
IMarlin
t has been a week or two since we adopted Rocky, the Husky mix, from you. It was surely a long drive there and then back here to the Twin Cities. But Rocky traveled in the car very well and we arrived here OK. I am writing to you to let you know how well Rocky is doing. He is truly loved. He sleeps in my husband’s room just practically next to him. He is eating well and drinking water and we walk him twice a day and the vet says he is perfect for us. Thank you for letting us know Rocky, so that we could adopt Rocky the Husky from you.
Always,
Kimberly and David White Bear Lake, MN
Dear HSBC,
Pupdate! Cammie (formerly Chamomile) is a unicorn. Yep, pretty much perfect. She’s spoiled rotten, but she’s so appreciative. Her newest toys are always her favorite. She plays with the pigs (we have 2 now). Just 100% Good Girl! It’s been more than a year now. She’s blossomed into such a loving, adventurous pup and has gone on road trips, helps daily with barn chores, is a professional snuggler, and is simply the perfect companion.

While keeping your cat indoors is always the safest and most responsible thing to do, giving your cat supervised outdoor time may provide excellent enrichment and enhanced mental health. The world outside your living room can provide sights, sounds, and smells that most animals are naturally curious about. Watching small creature like birds, lizards, and squirrels can also be a source of entertainment. And what feline doesn’t love stretching out for a snooze in a sunbeam?
Keeping kitty safe is a priority, and you should never leave your cat outside unattended. There are numerous potentially dangerous elements in an outdoor environment -- wildlife, unleashed dogs, automobiles, and even people. Providing an enclosure, or “catio,” can be a safe alternative that allows your cat to be outside without all the inherent dangers.
Has your cat been letting you know that they are lacking enrichment? Excessive grooming, aggression, destructive behavior, or disinterest in their toys are all signs your cat may be depressed and stressed. These behaviors often stem from boredom. Cats are curious by nature and need a consistent enriching environment to stay stimulated. Catios provide endless stimuli, keeping your cats engaged and improving their overall wellbeing!
• Increased physical activity: Enriching elements such as ramps, shelves, and multiple levels encourage natural behaviors such as running, jumping, climbing, and exploring.
• Boosts cardiovascular health: Increased movement contributes to better heart and circulatory health.
• Aids in weight management: Regular exercise prevents obesity and related health issues such as diabetes.
• Reduces boredom: Catios offer an endless supply of stimuli such as new sights, sounds, and smells to keep your cat engaged mentally.
• Alleviates stress and anxiety: Natural sunlight boosts the production of serotonin, and fresh air combined with the calming effects of being in a natural environment can help reduce anxiety and stress.
• Reduces confined stress: Being indoors all the time can lead to feelings of confinement or frustration in cats.
Incorporating a catio into your cat’s life is a great move for their overall well-being. These structures offer a perfect blend of safety and enrichment, allowing your feline friend to experience the joys of the outdoors without the associated risks. Whether you choose to embark on a do-it-yourself project or to hire a professional, the benefits of a catio are undeniable. From enhancing physical and mental health to protecting wildlife, catios truly stand out as the ultimate cat toy for those who want to give their pets the best of both worlds. If your cat is showing signs of boredom, stress, or anxiety -- or if you simply want to enrich their life -- now is the time to consider building a catio. Your cat will thank you with a happier, healthier, and more fulfilled life!

Two-year-old Godiva was purchased from a breeder, while pregnant, for $5,000, but when her puppies were delivered stillborn the person no longer wanted her. Due to the overbreeding this poor girl had endured, her damaged nipples were literally dragging on the floor and she was stepping on them, causing great irritation and discomfort. She was surrendered to us in January.
Our veterinary team performed a full mammary chain removal of the right side; she was also spayed during this surgery, and received her first laser treatment to help in the healing process. The next day Godiva went into foster care while she recovered, coming back to our clinic in a month for the same mammary procedure on her left side, as well as entropion surgery on her eyes. (Entropion is when the eyelid margin and eyelashes turn inward, irritating the eyes and causing vision problems.) Godiva returned to her foster home for continued recovery, coming to the shelter weekly for laser treatments. As this newsletter goes to print, she remains in foster care while awaiting her new forever family.
At seven years old and FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) positive, Rio had a couple of strikes against him in his search for a new home. The black and white tuxedo cat had been at the shelter for 100 days, despite being so sweet and friendly that he would drool with happiness when someone went in his room to pet him.
Rio was designated a Benny’s Buddies kitty – whenever Florida Panthers #9 Sam Bennett scores a goal, a shelter animal’s adoption fee is sponsored. So when Rio’s adopter Jamie finally came in, wearing her Stanley Cup Champions sweatshirt to bring her boy home to Sunrise, it seemed to us the most appropriate adoption ever!
