4-year-oldKindergarten
This optional program in conjunction with partner sites in the Howard-Suamico Community establishes classroom routines and expectations, which aid in a successful transition to Kindergarten. The math and literacy curricula are aligned with the HSSD Kindergarten curriculum, preparing children for the learning they will experience a year later. Speech and Language and Early Childhood services are provided within the 4K environment. Focus on developmental social and emotional learning helps children understand their feelings, empathy, collaboration, and conflict resolution with their peers.
See the 4K Program Handbook for details.

SolutionistStudios
Thanks to the Craig and Karen Dickman Family, Solutionist Studios in all five elementary schools provide a student-focused atmosphere with access to digital and physical resources for all elementary students and staff. Flexible furniture and adjacency to library resources promotes critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving in an active learning lab.
Teachers and Technology Integration Specialists connect the standards from all areas of our curriculum to an experience or an activity integrating design thinking, design challenges, computer science, prototyping, video production, such as green screen and stop motion.
The activities will prompt students will pose questions such as, “What if…?” and “How might we…?” Together, students will propose solutions and generate feedback for each other. From programming robots to 3D printing, students will have the opportunity to become solutionists, develop critical thinking skills, collaborate with peers, and turn their ideas into reality.

When you encounter a challenge, do a “think-aloud” for the benefit of your child. Model how to apply the same problem-solving skills you’ve been working on together, giving the real-world examples that she or he can implement in her or his own life.

Kindergarten
Kindergarten is a world of exciting discoveries! While there will still be plenty of playtime, the focus shifts to building foundational skills. Expect your child to explore letters, numbers, and early reading concepts. The classroom environment will also have more structure, with routines for lining up, following directions, and completing tasks. Most importantly, kindergarten is a time for making new friends and fostering a love of learning that will carry them throughout their school journey.

Grade1
First grade builds on the foundation laid in kindergarten. Get ready for your child to take a leap in reading and writing fluency. Math skills also blossom, with a focus on addition, subtraction, and concepts like place value. While playtime is still important, expect a stronger emphasis on following multi-step directions, working independently, and developing responsibility for schoolwork. They will continue to collaborate and problem-solve with peer in the Solutionist Studios, integrating computer science and design thinking into their learning. This is a year of remarkable growth, where your child will gain confidence as a learner and make lifelong friendships in the classroom.

Literacy InformationandTechnology
Information and Technology Literacies ensure that students have the ability to use tools, resources, processes, and systems responsibly to access and evaluate information in any medium, and to use that information to solve problems, communicate clearly, make informed decisions, and construct new knowledge, products, or systems. All content areas infuse information and technology literacies into the learning, preparing students to be ready for college and their careers. Howard-Suamico follows the Wisconsin Department of Instruction ITL standards, which state that:

Questions To ask your child’s teacher
Open communication with your child’s teacher is a key ingredient for success in school. In addition to fall and spring conferences, checking in by email or phone allows you to stay informed about your child's academic progress, social interactions, and any areas where they might need extra help. This two-way street also lets the teacher know you're invested in your child's education and creates a strong team environment to support your child's learning journey. These questions can open the dialogue about your child’s progress and his or her classroom experience.
